Book Description
“A mixture of science fiction and folktale, past and future, primitive and present-day . . . Thunderous and touching.”
–Financial Times
After drinking an elixir that bestows immortality upon him, a young Indian named Flapping Eagle spends the next seven hundred years sailing the seas with the blessing–and ultimately the burden–of living forever. Eventually, weary of the sameness of life, he journeys to the mountainous Calf Island to regain his mortality. There he meets other immortals obsessed with their own stasis and sets out to scale the island’s peak, from which the mysterious and corrosive Grimus Effect emits. Through a series of thrilling quests and encounters, Flapping Eagle comes face-to-face with the island’s creator and unwinds the mysteries of his own humanity. Salman Rushdie’s celebrated debut novel remains as powerful and as haunting as when it was first published more than thirty years ago.
“A book to be read twice . . . [Grimus] is literate, it is fun, it is meaningful, and perhaps most important, it pushes the boundaries of the form outward.”
–Los Angeles Times

Not your typical sci-fi.......2007-10-08
This is my first Rushdie, and putting aside whether it's representative of his other works, I will say that I enjoyed this book enough that I definitely intend to revisit this author in the future. In that respect alone, I'd say it's a successful first novel, since it makes me want to read more of Rushdie's ostensibly better works.
That being said, this book is certainly fantastical, though the language is crafted in such a way that it didn't exactly strike me as sci-fi until I read reviews on the back of the book describing it as such. I didn't have much trouble accepting the absurd qualities of the worlds (or dimensions) that Rushdie had created, but others might. Then again, you might be all for that, but have a harder time with the more philosophical aspects of the novel, as some of Rushdie's characters have the propensity to soliloquize about fairly weighty concepts. This was probably my least favorite element to the novel, as these explorations tended to cause the story to come to a grinding halt. They happened frequently enough that the novel winds up with an uneven pacing, which can make it a struggle to get through at times, but ultimately I'm glad I stuck with it and enjoyed reading it. It's a great book to discuss and has a lot of big ideas, so despite its slim size, it's definitely not a light read. Comparisons to "Alice and Wonderland" are quite apt. If you'd like something that's a bit unconventional and are fine with a slightly challenging read, then I'd recommend giving this a shot.

Decent, But Not Exceptional, Literary Debut From Salman Rushdie.......2007-02-02
Much to my amazement, Salman Rushdie's first novel, "Grimus", is a metaphysical science fiction novel which thematically most closely resembles Ursula K. Le Guin's classic fiction from the 1960s and 1970s. However, having said this, I won't charitably describe "Grimus" as a fine example of science fiction - in stark contrast to the view expressed by another recent Amazon.com customer reviewer - since I have read more memorable, thought provoking fiction from the likes of Samuel Delany, James Tiptree, Jr., Joanna Russ, and of course, Le Guin, herself; all of whom wrote some of the most memorable science fiction published in the English language during the 1960s and 1970s. Rushdie redeems himself here only by virtue of the fact that he's demonstrating that he's a fine prose stylist, writing some rather memorable passages throughout the book. However, his main protagonist, Flapping Eagle, an American Indian of the Axona tribe, is fundamentally a cypher, for whom I had little interest in or appreciation of the various episodes involving him within this book. "Grimus" deserves a marginal recommendation only because it is Rushdie's first novel, providing a brief glimpse into some of the elegant prose he would use to such superlative effect in "Midnight's Children".
review of "Grimus".......2007-01-16
Grimus is a very good slipstream book. By slipstream I mean a magic realism novel that borrows from the content conventions of scifi. I had read "Midnight's Children" (great), "Shame" (pretty good), "Satanic Verses" (very good) and "the Ground Beneath her Feet" (not good)....and wanted to read "Grimus" having read that it incorporated scifi elements. I agree with the critics who say that "Grimus" is not perfect. The plot feels unnatural or laboured at times and there are flaws in the style that Rushdie corrects in his later writings. However, for a fan of scifi, it is a great book. I loved it and could not wait to finish it. The style reminded me of one of my favorite writers, R. A. Lafferty. I think it is the way he draws the characters, in a flat but sophisticated manner that reminded me of the genius from Oklahoma.

I'm a fan of Rushdie's but this book is like no other I've read of his. Just wonderful. Loved it.

Wonderful book, .......2007-03-28
as a meteorologist, I truly enjoyed the weather side of things as well. I loved the merging of science and paranormal gifts. Amazingly seamless, with a well written story that draws the reader in instantly. If you've got a few hours (for me it took 4, but I'm a fast reader), have a seat, and dig in! You'll love it.
Perfect.......2007-03-22
This book is a perfect sequal to the first. If you like strong women who are trying to find themselves you will love this book.
Great Fantasy Novel by Owens........2007-03-14
I think this is a great novel about a wonderul fantasy world with a not so risk a, romance mixed into it. I think it has some graphic detail that some readers should be aware of. Also you'll have to forgive the author, editor, and publisher for a few typos
fun new series.......2006-11-06
I've enjoyed this series so far. Some have wrote that the first was better, but don't let that stop you from trying this one. I think the first might be considered better because it was a new world and there was much more fighting. This one seems to focus more on the scholarly aspect (which the Sorcerers do in Amee-they're the scholars of the world) The next book will bring us back to the front lines with the fighters.
The three main charcters in this one was Marion (slightly over weight with a domineering rich mother and very ill MS brother). Jaquar (he's the one in book one where that evil creature hooked onto to his horse for a ride back) whose parents were killed-their life energy was sucked out of them. Now, all he can think of is getting revenge on the creatures threatening their world. Jaquar plans to use Marion to distroy the nest of these creatures even if it means her life. That is until he meets Marion and get to know her. Bossgond (I know I'm misspelling this, but I'm writing from memory) is the elderly father figure. He's the cute old, ecsentric, that turns endearing father figure in the story.
Great book, sure to let the warm fuzzy in your belly gurgle.
Can't wait for the next book in the series.......2006-09-01
I really loved both this book and the first in the series, Guardian of Honor. I believe the next one is coming out in February and will find it hard to wait ;-).
Robin is a very imaginative writer and really creates her "worlds". I like the Heart series very much, but feel that this series is even better. Having read both books more than once, I recommend them.

WHAT A LET DOWN!!!!!!!!!.......2003-06-11
I CAN'T BELIEVE SOME PEOPLE THINK THIS IS THE BEST BOOK IN THE SERIES. I'm almost done with Book 3, but I can tell now it's the WORST book of the series. After an amazing set-up from Book 1 and Book 2 (where Ampris is a Gladiator), you'ld think they've developed Ampris to be a strong, valiant character who will eventually teach the Viis a lesson they won't forget and free the Abiru. But what do we get? Book 3 makes Ampris into a WEAKLING! A COWARD! A BUMBLING FOOL WHO MAKES 1 STUPID USELESS COSTLY MISTAKE TOOOOO MANY!!!!!!!!!! WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! She's "brave" ohh yeah for making others drink a virus-infested liquid, and for drinking it herself, but SHE HAS NO GUTS to fight the Viis, to kick Viis butt. She got no courage. Her idea of a peaceful revolution is one where LOTS OF HER KIND AND OTHER ABIRU ARE SLAUGHTERED, and they don't fight the Viis back because she still want's a "non-violent" revolution. Well what do you call thousands of slaughtered innocent abiru? Is that non-violent? Ridiculous. From Book 2, you would expect Book 3 to be a major battle for survival between Abiru and Viis. But what do we get with Book 3? A whiny, wimpy, poorly written piece that ruins any achievements made in Books 1 and 2.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It doesn't get better then this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-01-08
I can't tell you how good these books are! I'm not really into the trilogy thing, when I read a book, I'm bored with that plot and want to move on to something different, so I really wasn't too interested in starting these books, but after 2 chapters, no one could keep me away from them!
From birth to death, you're there with Ampris. So if you have or even if you haven't read the first two, READ THIS BOOK NOW!!!!!
Crystal Eye = Crystal Perfect........2002-01-01
I really enjoyed this book. Ampries and her clan, after living illegally on the outskirts of the Viis world for some time, realize that the Viis have polluted the world so much that the wilderness can no longer sustain them. While trying to find a new place to live Ampries stumbles back into Viis library where she finally finds out the truth behind the enslaving of her kind. She becomes a revolutionary again, this time sacrificing everything to finally destroy the corrupted Viis.
This book is based on a world far from our own that is inhabited by various species of animal-like beings. They are all enslaved by the once majestic and powerful Viis, rulers of a multi-complex of galaxies. The Viis are now corrupted and so used to slave labor that they are inept.
The third one in the series in my opinion is by far the best. The 1st one, the Golden One, is some-what boring and basically gets the reader used to the world and its problems. The second book, the Crimson Claw, has much more action as Ampries is forced to fight as a gladiator. She also tries to get a secret organization to rise up against the Viis, but this gets her into trouble and basically sets the story up for the third book. Both books were good, but the third book can be read by itself and the reader would be completely satisfied with out knowing about all of the information given in the first two books.
Don't get me wrong; I would much rather read the Golden One and the Crimson Claw than many other books that I have read in my time. The Crystal Eye is so flawless that it overshadows the rest of the series.
Best book EVER!.......2001-10-10
I'm 13, so when I start a book, I get to page 200 or so and I get bored with it. (The Vampire Lestat, Christine, Watchers...) But then I found this book, started reading it, I COULD NOT stop. I laughed, I cried, I LOVED it! I only wish I had found and read the first two, The Golden One and The Crimson claw first. I actually fought with my mom about not having enough time to read "Ampris." when I was at school. I read it every chance I got. It was like living in another world, inside the world that not many people know. I told my friend to read it and she said she wasn't interested in those kind of books and it's not even a book, see? It's too real to be called a book. I was depressed when I finished page 458, (I love those kind of endings, but it was so sad...) I can't wait to read the others. By the way, I just have to say I really liked Nashmarl.
Disappointing.......2001-06-07
It took me nearly 3 weeks to get through the first book i kept setting it down for better literature. Although it was a mojor disappointment i decided to give the second book a try and was intrigued by the detail of the gladiator matchs. However, thats all they seemed to be. Gladiator matches. The third book turned out to be a mojor disappointment (even if it was somehow tied into the Bible and Moses as another reviewer mensioned). It seemed far too easy of a get away for Ampris and her friends. Also why did the Kaa even care about a few thousand escaped slaves when there were hundreds of others in the empire. Plz i would like someone to give me some insight and explain the meaning of this book. There seems to be gaping holes that deal more with the strugle of Ampris than the status of the empire.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A088224. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis considers the problem of optimally selecting a periodic replacement time for a multiserver queueing system in which each server is subject to degradation as a function of the mean service rate and a stochastic and dynamic environment. Also considered is the problem of optimal service rate selection for such a system. In both cases, the performance metric is the long- run average cost rate. Analytical expressions are obtained, in terms of Laplace transforms, for the nonlinear objective functions, necessitating the use of numerical Laplace transform inversion to evaluate candidate solutions in conjunction with standard numerical algorithms. Due to the convexity of the objective function, the optimal replacement time is computed using a hybrid bisection-secant method which yields globally optimal solutions. The optimal service rates are obtained via gradient search methods but are only guaranteed to provide locally optimal solutions. The analytical results are implemented on three notional examples that demonstrate the benefits of dynamically adjusting service rates under the described maintenance policy.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A034593. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A leaky waveguide antenna is investigated through a combination of theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. We developed a design procedure based on the analysis of Goldstone and Oliner for an aperture in the narrow wall of a rectangular waveguide. We can phase scan the antenna by adjusting the propagation constant of the guiding structure, and we can frequency scan it by taking advantage of frequency dispersive behavior. A combination of frequency and phase scanning can be used to steer the beam. We describe how the aperture illumination function is synthesized for a constant width aperture and we present the design equations. We use a numerical simulation of the leaky waveguide section to obtain the radiation efficiency. We then calculate the realized gain to evaluate the frequency scan range and radiation pattern characteristics. The results demonstrate that the main beam position can be scanned in the range of 100 to 300 from broadside over a narrow frequency range without corrupting the radiation pattern.

Should be a great book........1997-06-25
Ok I don't own this book, however, I do have the copies of the magazine from when it first came out. What I can say about the recipes is that they are wonderful. I can't say they are all very or extremely easy. Everyone of them are delicious that I have tried, and I have tried a LOT of them. If you are a cook and interested in cooking don't think this is one of those same old, same old, type things, they have and still do have wonderful recipes

terrific.......2007-03-12
I love this book. I actually saw this in a shop at Logan Airport while waiting for my flight and decided to order it online as soon as I got back home. It's a terrific book if you are looking for inspiration when making your own handbags (I started making felted handbags recently) or if you just happen to like handbags.
Beautiful detailed photos, elegantly presented. Includes ratings by estimated value for collectors.
Perfume Bottles.......2007-01-09
A great book to have on hand as reference. Dimensions of the bottles would have been an advantage.
SOLID METAL TOY REPRESENTATION.......2006-09-12
OK...for some Un-Godly reason Amazon has all four of Judith Miller's Pocket collectible guides from DK books linked together. If you review one of the four, it shows up on all the other three. Very Strange...
Let me make it clear that this review is only for the Metal Toys Book only! Miller is the long-time collectibles and antiques expert and has assembled hundreds of classic tin, cast iron, and die-cast toys for this wonderful book. The book is sectioned by the three distinct types of metal toys I just mentioned beginning with sheet metal or tin toys. Each toy pictured is given a value range based on 1 to 5 stars with 1 star being a range of $10 - $200, and 5 stars being over $2000. Admittedly these are very broad ranges meant to reflect the condition of the item as well as the availability of the items original box and condition as well.
While it's certainly no where near comprehensive, the guide does provide a fair representation of the types, styles, and manufacturers of each of these types of toys and the names are certainly well known to collectors: Dinky, Marx, Cragston, Hubley, Corgi, Tootsie, Schuco, Britains, and Hot Wheels/Mattel. Included are some great early examples of German tin toys such as a fantastic double-decker bus made by Gunthermann that gets a five star value, as well as many great post-WWII toys produced in Japan as factories that formerly made weapons were now being used to make toys. Some other great in toys pictured are the Disney Dipsey car with Donald Duck as the driver made by Marx, and the Nautilus submarine from "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" made by Sutcliffe.
The die-cast section features many of the gorgeous Corgi licensed toys like the Beatles Yellow Submarine, Monkeemobile, James Bond cars, and the classic 1960's Batmobile. There are also numerous Hot Wheels "redlines" pictured but while the photography is top-notch, many of the redlines pictured are in very rough condition with lots of scratches and paint nicks. It would have been nice to see some better examples used for the pictures.
One small complaint is that the books is comprised almost entirely of various types of vehicles: cars, airplanes, buses, ships, trucks, wagons, tanks, etc...It was disappointing that things such as the great Japanese tin robots and space toys, and Marx military playsets were not included.
That minor complaint aside, I really enjoyed thumbing through the book and it is a useful tool in recognizing, and evaluation the price of metal toys. Now I just need Amazon to fix their end!

A Stunning Collection of Handbags.......2006-03-31
"A survey has found that an American woman owns an average of six handbags." ~Judith Miller
Judith Miller has captured handbags in all their intricate beauty. Many of these bags exist in museums and it is very unlikely that we could observe them all in a lifetime. So, this book is invaluable in that regard. Like Judith Miller's book on perfume bottles, this book exceeds expectations.
The bags range in age from Pre-1890s to the 1970s and present day selections. Each chapter contains historical information, unique quotes and full-color pictures showing the most intricate details and evolution of the beloved handbag. Here we find the original mobile phone, a phone that is shaped as a bag that actually can be plugged in to make calls. One can only imagine those surprise long distance charges after a friend stops by for a visit.
Red velvet Turkish bags with gold embroidery and French beaded purses all live happily amongst pages displaying everything from beadwork to precious metals and leather. There are purses shaped like phones, flowers, accordions, boxes, baskets, wicker parasols, birdhouses, birds and adorable toy rabbits. If you have any interest in Vintage clothes, you may rather enjoy reading about the magazine clutch bag.
With over 400 designs to choose from, this is the ultimate handbag book, it could even fit in a handbag. You will be left with a feeling of: "I simply must have that bag on page ____." However, it is probably in a museum and one can only hope a designer finds this book and makes a modern replica. From the playful to the elegant, there is something to enjoy and many memorable handbags are featured in this wonderful book.

Paris and Perfumes.......2006-03-31
"There is nothing better than remembering specific moments, like the first time you kissed, through a fragrance. I love that feeling of nostalgia a fragrance can conjure." ~Tommy Hilfiger
It took a trip to Paris to make me aware of the exquisite qualities of rare perfume bottles. Since then I've enjoyed dreaming about a collection and this book satisfies my visual longings. This book has everything from Pre-20th Century to the Present day. Judith Miller has collected pictures of over 400 perfume bottles. The five-star rating system is helpful for collectors as it indicates value.
If you are new to collecting or "dreaming" then this book is an excellent starting point for discovery. As a child you may have remembered your mother brining home a silver vinaigrette shaped like a fish after her world travels or perhaps you discovered tiny bottles in a second-hand or vintage store.
Who has not at one time or another owned a Chanel Number 5 bottle? That is also included as are modern perfume bottles by Nina Ricci,. The L'Air du Temps perfume bottle with plastic doves is rated at one star, while the winged bottle has been given two stars.
The most fascinating perfume bottles seem to be from Pre-20th Century where we find tiny Ruby cased glass bottles with a glass perfume casket and even a key. There is a sense of mystery to locked perfume containers. Intricate details on the porcelain perfume bottles display hand-painted care. Enlarged photos also show fine detail. The Art Nouveau section is helpful in this regard. The writing on the bottles could not be seen without an enlarged version.
A few surprises included the teddy bear perfume bottles and the Steuben blue Aurene perfume bottles with oceanic colors and flower-shaped stoppers. There are perfume bottles that look like they are set up on a chess board, a stunning Roger et Gallet Green glass bottle with a silk box and decorative tassle, perfume bottles from Amsterdam shaped like a lute and even humor like the 1980s Head over Heals perfume bottle.
Throughout the pages there are many high interest items and I am left feeling most in love with the item on page 16. The ruby glass, tiny perfume bottle set and key has me completely intrigued.

An Informative Collectors Guide.......2000-04-02
I found this little book very helpful with a wealth of information, on collecting all types of Perfume Bottles including non-commercials (scent bottles without perfume) as well as commercials (bottles sold with perfume). It covers the art of perfume bottle making & some history from ancient times thru todays avant-garde creations such as: Pomanders, Victorian Vinaigrettes, all types of materials that were used, some famous name commerical houses, novelities & minis just to name a few areas. Each area is covered with nice photo's of the period perfume bottle. The is also a nice chapter on collecting advice including what to collect, tips, care & cleaning. Great pictures and ideas.......2007-08-26
I looked through many books when it was time to have a bathroom redone. This book although not large, had some of the best pictures and ideas of the many books I looked at. I used one of their bathrooms as the base for my remodel and it came out looking great. Definitely check this book out if you are thinking of remodeling or even just freshening up a bathroom.
A Great Addition to a Design Library.......2007-02-13
This is a very good source book. Novel ideas are presented with great clarity. The quality of the images is spectacular.

"Required reading" for designers, typographers, and students.......1998-10-17
"Required reading" for designers, typographers, and students involved in Graphic Design today. One of the more incisive and effective books at covering the subject of contemporary typographic visual communication. You may not agree with it, but you'd better know about it.
A Designers Must Have.......1997-11-04
Although the examples of the new design in type seem "far out," this book is a must-have for any serious designer who doesn't want to be left behind in the world of 21st century design.

Description:
Foreign exchange (FX) pricing processes are nonstationary: Their frequency characteristics are time dependent. Most do not conform to Geometric Brownian Motion (GBM), because they exhibit a scaling law with Hurst exponents between zero and 0.5 and fractal dimensions between 1.5 and 2. Wavelet multiresolution analysis (MRA), with Haar wavelets, is used to analyze these time and scale dependencies (self-similarity) of intraday Asian currency spot exchange rates. We use the ask and bid quotes of the currencies of eight Asian countries (Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand) and, for comparison, of Germany for the crisis period May 1, 1998-August 31, 1997, provided by Telerate (U.S. dollar is the numeraire). Their time-scale-dependent spectra, which are localized in time, are observed in wavelet scalograms. The FX increments are characterized by the irregularity of their singularities. Their degrees of irregularity are measured by homogeneous Hurst exponents. These critical exponents are used to identify the global fractal dimension, relative stability, and long-term dependence, or long-term memory, of each Asian FX series. The invariance of each identified Hurst exponent is tested by comparing it at varying time and scale (frequency) resolutions. It appears that almost all investigated FX markets show antipersistent pricing behavior. The anchor currencies of the D-mark and Japanese Yen (JPY) are ultraefficient in the sense of being most antipersistent or ''fast mean-reversing.'' This is a surprising result because most financial analyst either assume neutral or persistent behavior in the financial markets, based on earlier research by Granger in the 1960s. This is a pedagogical paper explaining the most rational methodology for the identification of long-term memory in financial time series.
