Book Description
The editors who brought us Unsettling America and Identity Lessons have compiled a short- story anthology that focuses on themes of racial and ethnic assimilation. With humor, passion, and grace, the contributors lay bare poignant attempts at conformity and the alienation sometimes experienced by ethnic Americans. But they also tell of the strength gained through the preservation of their communities, and the realization that it was often their difference from the norm that helped them to succeed. In pieces suggesting that American identity is far from settled, these writers illustrate the diversity that is the source of both the nation's great discord and infinite promise.
"A moving collection featuring some of the nation's brightest voices on the complex and profound subject of race and ethnicity in America

Powerful words from often-neglected voices.......2007-03-28
The best thing about this anthology of short stories is the real-world voice that it provides for teenagers who read it. So many teens can feel disenfranchised by the American perspectives on opportunity, and this book shows a very valuable multicultural and immigrant perspective. I teach creative writing in a high school program, and this book, containing such excellent writers as Judith Ortiz Cofer and Gary Soto, is a strong resource for providing modern examples of differing aesthetics and points-of-view.
The Real Thing.......2002-05-06
A very powerful collection of work that tells the real story of what it means to be an American. As an educator, I have researched and read other collections that claim to be similar, even superior but there are no comparisons. GROWING UP ETHNIC IN AMERICA is by far superior in quality.
BUY THIS BOOK, SHARE IT, TEACH IT, CHERISH IT!!!.......2002-05-03
"Growing Up Ethnic in America" is an immensley important anthology of honest, emotionally-charged, compassionate prose by established and newly emerging writers of all backgrounds. It is a testament to the truly groundbreaking work that the Gillans have been doing in book after book. This dynamic cultural duo have managed to not only change the face of mainstream anthologies by challenging the same old dominance of the mostly white male contributor, but have managed to create teaching tools for teachers faced with educating students of diverse backgrounds. I don't know how many times a student has come to me testifying that something they read in "Growing Up Ethnic in America" speaks to their personal experience and has inspired them to write, think and feel deeply, not only about themselves, but of others as well. "Growing Up Ethnic in America" is a life-changing anthology of brave and honest testimony from those often pushed to the margins of our society. The Gillans have done a remarkable job in culling together all of these fascinating and incredible writers. This should be one ... anyone's book club; but especially for educators and readers who truly care about where we've been as a country, where we are, and where we are headed.
Superb and Moving Collection.......2001-03-26
This is a very moving and fascinating collection of fiction and memoir that includes work by such writers as ELDoctorow and NashCandelaria and Louise Erdrich and Amy Tan. It opens up all sorts of avenues for discussion in a classroom or a reading group at a library. These editors have done an excellent job of assembling a group of stories that are clear, powerful, driect, moving, and help illuminate the experience of the outsider in American society. Really wonderful. their other anthologies are exceellent as well.
Illuminating and Powerful Anthology.......2001-01-15
This book is truly wonderful. It contains very strong work by people from various ethnic groups, a brilliant introduction by Jennifer Gillan, and moving, powerful work. I really enjoyed reading it,a nd return to it often for its clarity and wisdom. I also have used it with many classes at the college level and find it an excellent source for discussion.

Best of the Dark Knight...4 1/2 stars.......2007-04-07
I bought this book around the time Batman Begins was in theaters, and I found the movie borrowed quite a bit of material from "Year One." This is a pretty solid title, and I'm not a DC fan. Most of the reviews I've read are devoid of complaints about "Year One," but there are a few, at least in my view.
I didn't care for the way Catwoman is drawn, and I had a big problem with the laws of physics being violated in the final panels. However, the biggest gripe I have is the panel in which Bruce Wayne snaps a set of hand-cuffs.
I know that it's only a comic, and in comics the laws of reality do not apply. However, I feel that Miller was trying to create more realistic view on the Batman Mythos, and the snapping of the hand-cuffs really undermines this vision. Superman, Bruce Wayne is not. This really is a great book though. Without it, a true fan of the Dark Knight can't call their collection complete. 4 1/2 stars
Style over substance..........2007-03-19
Frank Miller continues his "one trick pony "act by giving us more style over substance nonsense. If you go to every film that Hollywood releases cause its new, then this is for you. Enjoy!
Frank Millar's best Batman!.......2007-03-19
If you'd ask me, this one tops all other Batman stories I've read so far. Of course there's the excellent `The Long Halloween' which is no less than amazing, but it lacks something - it's too much to the style.
This story portrays Batman first year, or, even more to the point - a very specific part of his first year in the costume, and how he came to be The Batman. And it does this beautifully through the eyes of Commissioner Gordon, who just came to Gotham, and then only through our hero's eyes. So what we get is not only how the world around Batman sees him, but we get the same thoughts we once did when we really thought about - what is Batman all about. We get Batman from a place rarely explored in the DC Universe - we see what stands behind Batman for the reader and moreover - he is not the bright detective who does no mistakes.
The art is one of the most fitting and beautiful in concept I've seen in the mainstream genre, while all tend to blazing our eyes with tricks this one is simply and dark - just as a Batman story should be, with the twisted and sick darkness here and there.
I love the artwork. I love the tale. I see it as one of the best.
Very good, very solid re-telling of the Batman's beginnings.......2006-11-02
For the casual comics fan (of which I am one) this is a great introduction to Batman. Miller's re-telling creates solid characters out of Bruce Wayne and Gordon and introduces us to the dark world of crime that Batman is out to combat on a nightly basis.
I wasn't terribly fond of the introduction of Catwoman - I much prefer the introduction of super-criminals that the movie "Batman Begins" presented, but that is neither her nor there.
Bottomline - this is solid escapist entertainment. Well-drawn and well-presented. I give this one a grade of B+.
Get it. Now. You WONT be disappointed........2006-09-09
This is probably the first Batman graphic novel I ever read, and it raised my expectations to possibly too high a level for the rest of my experience with the genre. It is one of the three best graphic novels I have ever read, and you should get it now. Anybody who claims to be a fan of comic-books and hasn't read this is a liar.
It tells the fascinating story of Batman's career beginnings, from his errors to his triumphs and the start of many many injuries to come. I won't sum up the story here, since other reviewers do that, but suffice to say its the grittiest crime drama I've read or seen in a long time. With no extreme villains, its clearly a Batman story, with a heavy dose of Comissioner Gordon, who, normally a plot-device at best, is a deep and fully-fleshed character in his own right who shares the story equally with Batman, to great effect. The two play off each other beautifully, and you really get the feeling of a partnership in development.
Mazuchelli's artwork is concise and descriptive yet moody and incredibly gritty, and I couldn't imagine a better fit to Frank Miller's dark 'adolescent' tale of the masked vigilante. The two elements of story and art never clash, and always work hand in hand to best effect. This is the movie Batman Begins should have been.
After you buy this (and you should), check out Miller's Dark Knight Returns, a tale of a disenfranchised middle-aged Batman who comes out of retirement to wreak havoc and fight a corrupt Gotham (and America). Year One and Dark Knight couldnt be more different, but somehow form perfect companion pieces and are the most satisfying takes on Batman in any medium.
Also check out Tim Sale and Jeph Loeb's 'The Long Halloween' and 'Dark Victory' which take place near immediately after Year One and are great mystery pieces in their own right.

Pretty vile stuff.......2003-09-19
I am not a fan of DL in the first place but I have read some books in this interminable series that I actually enjoyed.
Skydark Spawn is not of them. It exemplies everything that I find repugnant in the series...stupid heroes, mindless bimbo female characters, a string of cliches' instead of plot, gratuitous violence and a fixation on bottom of the barrel..
This one seems to be more of a peephole into the writer's psyche in regards to how he views women rather than a book.
Although Skydark Spawn has "Science Fiction" printed on the spine, it was more like a soft-core novel aimed at teenage boys. There were no science fiction elements that I could see.
A pretty vile book all the way around.
After reading this, I told my husband that he'd better switch to reading only Outlanders and stop defiling our home with crud like DL unless he brings it home with the pages processed, perforated and on a roll!
Don't waste your money!.......2003-08-28
Is the real James Axler dead? This series should be! This is one of the worst, but the last dozen or so have all been pretty rotten. Don't waste your money!

Looks like Deathlands is in a "Rut"........2003-05-21
It looks like Gold Eagle needs to be doin' some chillin' in regards to the writers they pick to write these books.
Fireblast awful. Simply awful.
As of late, the Deathland books have been following a pretty lame formula.
1) Group arrives at a redoubt.
2) Group searches redoubt for weapons/food/...etc.
3) Everyone leaves redoubt to figure out where they are.
4) Firefight with abligatory mutie.
5) Cutscene to crazed oppressive baron.
6) Ryan and Co. either:
all get captured
Half the group gets captured
Dean gets captured
all get hired as crazed baron's head of sec
7) Dean exclaims "Hot Pipe!" about 10-20 times.
8) Barron plots Ryan and Co demise.
9) Ryan or someone from the group figure out they're in trouble and plot to take out barron and/or henchmen/sec force.
10) Lots of firefights
11) Barron and/or sec force meets grisley demise.
12) Dean exaclaims "Hot Pipe!" a few more times to boot.
13) Ryan and Co head back to redoubt. Ryan and Krysty wonder if they'll ever find a place to settle down. Like how many times have they had this conversation already and not acted upon it?
Skydark Spawn falls into this formula as Ryan and the women-folk get kidnapped by Barron Fox and his sec force to be used in a breeding farm for babies. Okay, sounds somewhat interesting, and probably would be more interesting if this plot device hasn't been used about 10-15 times already. Also the author of this book has some form of misconception that gritty (Thats what a true Deathlands book is) is equal to pornography.
The portrayal of sex in this book, I'd have to equate with that of a teenage boys masterbatory fantasies. Granted the Barron is a twisted pervert, but the amount of time and embellishment the author spends on the twisted sex supercedes the plot and pacing of the story.
All through the story we're treated to people forced to perform oral sex, people forced into rape situations, cut scenes of the Barron flipping through skin mags, sec people waving their gentials and fighting in the nude. What exactly is going through Gold Eagle's mind here?
Also, what was the point of the side story with the fishing village looking for new breeding material? A pointless plot device that goes nowhere in the story and its contribution to the ending of the story seemed very rushed. Its as if the author ran out of new offensive sexual situations and had to figure out a quick way to end the story.
If Skydark Spawn is the example of the "New and Improved" Deathlands, then Gold Eagel, you have pretty much killed the series for Deathlands fans.
My recommendation is to skip this book and opine for the good all days when Laurence James wrote these books.
SKYDARK SPAWN FALLS SHORT!.......2003-05-14
This newest installment of the once-legendary series is a step up from the previous couple of past novels, but still manages to fall short of its previous greatness that it once had.
Again, we have a new writer who gives us a depraved and darkly sexual setting that DEATHLANDS has been known to have.
The idea of the overall storyline was simple and been done before. The characters were done pretty well this time, but I hated the fact that Ryan seems to ask the person he's getting ready to kill if they want to die first. Stupid. Ryan Cawdor is a chilling machine first and foremost!
The interesting part of this story was when Krysty and Ryan's relationship is put into jeapardy when she is captured as a sexual slave for the local barons delight. The writer totally forgot that Krysty has the power of the Earth Mother to call upon, another writer who just throws a great time utilize this extremely interesting power - and chooses not too.
Again, this particular writer forgets all about utilizing the nuke crazy weather to build great setting. This, along with Krysty's power, has been tossed aside to make for yet another forgettable tale.
There were a lot of editing mistakes that were overlooked here. Ryan just comes up with weapons and a spyglass that he couldn't possibly possess at that particular time in the story.
Oh, God, please make this tremendously once-awesome series come back in its full capacity with talented writers.
I know quite a few writers out there that have made this series shine at one time or another. Please Gold Eagle, pay the jack required to get these talented writers - ones such as Mark Ellis to bring back the awesome adventures yet to be explored in the DEATHLANDS universe.

A Helpful Introduction to Ignatian Discernment.......2006-01-14
William Barry's PAYING ATTENTION TO GOD was first published in 1990 and over the years has become a popular and respected work. It contains Barry's insights about discernment based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. It follows the basic principal of Ignatian discernment (consolation/desolation) and discusses ways in which discernment is not a once in a lifetime experience but something we do just about every time we pray. Since discernment presupposes a relationship with God based on prayer, Barry begins with prayer then leads the reader into the wider arena of discernment, helping the readers see that God does in fact have a plan for each one of us and when we choose to live according to God's desire for each of us to have life and to love, we are participating in God's plan of creation. The book also discusses some of the pitfalls and challenges of discernment and concludes with two chapters that are reflections on death and resurrection. As is the case in many of Barry's writings, he is aware that he has readers who are at varying levels of the spiritual life so people new to his writings and people familiar with Ignatian prayer methods alike will find this book has much to offer. Barry also provides plenty of examples and stories which make the book inviting.
PAYING ATTENTION TO GOD is a readable book that is a wonderful introduction for a person who wishes to take prayer more seriously and is looking for insight into God's will. It has the potential to lead a person to deeper prayer and helps people see the ways in which God's works in our lives and in the world on a continual basis.
Illuminating.......2000-07-24
Father Barry succintly describes prayer as a personal relationship with God. This in fact is the focus of Part I of "Paying Attention to God."
As we progress through the chapters, we discover the various aspects involved in developing our own relationship with our Creator. It is an eye opening experience.
Upon completion of his explaination of the variuos stages, he proceeds to correlate prayer with personal descernmnet, then deals with issues of communal discernment and finally death and ressurection.
At each of the stages there are explainations, which can be applied to our own prayer lives.
Father Barry assists us as we learn more about the centralitly of God in our prayer and how it applies to our lives.
Book Description
History enthusiasts have always been intrigued by Riflemen and the special weapons that they carried. This new book covers such famous weapons as the Ferguson, the Pattern 1776 and the rifles used by German mercenaries and American loyalists during the Revolution. And naturally, a large portion of the book is dedicated to the most famous rifle of them all, the Baker. Illustrated with 320 exceptional photos, this book also includes a remarkable wealth of data about the Rifleman and Regiments that carried these weapons into battle.

Great book.......2007-03-12
I really enjoyed this book. It's very much like another magnificent book, The Flintlock by Torsten Lenk.
The truth about the British flintock rifle -not fiction .......2005-01-26
The beginning of real, verified info on the British rifle, and the dispelling of myths about them, and about the men who carried them.
DeWitt Bailey is a thorough scholar, and leaves little to chance or to lore. Unlike other recent books about British riflemen (Phillip Wright's "Rifleman" and Haythornthwaite's "British Rifleman", for example) which rely on traditionally-believed information and guesswork from regimental museums and reenactors for their content, Mr Bailey wields a well-written, easily readable mix of official records, primary sources such as diaries, journals, inspection returns, official correspondence etc., all laid out in assiduous detail, complete with all sources in footnotes and a voluminous bibliography.
Lots of myth busting: The concept of the Ferguson rifle was not invented by Patrick Ferguson. The Baker rifle was not called a Baker rifle in its heyday. The 95th Rifles gave up powder horns very early on- why? Buy the book and you will find out, and, you can trust the info Mr Bailey gives you- it's all backed up with solid research. Would that more writers in this field were like him!
An EXCELLENT Reference Book !!!.......2004-04-20
For students of antique British military rifles, this is THE sourcebook to buy! I saw a copy at a friend's house and couldn't put it down. It is the best work to date on the subject! Collectors, museum staff, historical artists, and militaria buffs will find a gold mine of information, especially on the Baker rifle. The attention to the small details, such as gun tools, ammunition and actual performance in the field really completed this work. But be warned, you might find yourself humming "Over the Hills and Far Away"!!!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2006-12-24
This book is filled with photos of contemporary art made with wood. There are discussions about wood, its properies and characteristics. But being a woodworker myself, I found those discussions basic.
All of the photos are in color. Many of the photos are accompanied by a brief disussion of the piece. While there is a lot of furniture here, the focus of the book is art.
Some of the pieces show are wonderful examples of fine craftsmanship and will endure for many decades. Other items are abstract--some people will like them, others won't and only time will tell if they are are masterpieces. A lot of turnings are included: several of Bihn Pho's turned vessels are shown. There are also many abstract turnings.
Many of the pieces are very 'art-y'. The object's usefulness is limited. However, there are still a good many pieces where both form and function are given equal weight. Several of the rocking chairs (all of which are Maloofian) are just as beautiful as they are functional.

FOR THE WHIMSICAL AT HEART!.......2007-01-09
Tracy Porter has a flair all her own & you will want to make it yours! I love her eccentric but fun style! Caution: not for the traditionalists! Even if you have a classic design style you can borrow tips and ideas to accent your style- something for everyone in this book- you should really enjoy seeing what she has done with everyday objects. I found myself saying 'why didnt i think of that'?!
It's a dream even for a French woman.......2003-04-04
I absolutely loved this book in spite of the fact I'm French and I sometimes must search words I don't understand in the dictionnary.
Tracy Porter's ideas are incredible and a little crazy, but as I'm an artist and a designer too, I think I'm almost as crazy as she is, but it's very pleasant to find someone who go further in the crazyness. Her joy of life brought me a lot, at a time I had troubles in my inspiration, because of family problems, political difficulties (I love USA and it's not well seen in France these times).
I already wanted to move to USA before but by seeing all her funny and sympathitic animals, it convinced me more. People in Paris have lost their fantasy, I think.
Suddenly, I thought, I'm not alone... Well, it's a book about love. Everything in it is about love and it makes us feel so good.
Thanks Tracy.

A REFRESHING DELIGHT - A REMINDER TO DREAM.......2002-05-08
Having been a long time fan of designer Tracy Porter's enchanting products, I had the pleasure of curling up with her first book DREAMS FROM HOME over a relaxing weekend. How refreshing to read a book of such honesty that captures the spirit of dreaming and taking risks. Having moved from the city to the country to start her design business, Tracy shares an inside look of the changes and challenges that she and her husband faced to follow their dreams. The photography in this book is completely inspirational filled with Tracy's signature layered look. Tracy shares personal tales of how they transformed their 100-year old stone farmhouse into a place of comfort. She shares decorating and entertaining tips without being preachy or too instructive. What makes this book even more intriguing is the way in which Tracy weaves in personal stories - from her love for her grandmother to her family's Easter celebration to a suprise birthday party for her husband in an abandoned silo! This book is fun, inspiring, and reminds us all to dream and play and live life to its fullest. DREAMS FROM HOME is a must have for anyone who dares to dream!
Have fun, be yourself, dream Baroque (or is that "bark?!").......1999-01-28
Are you a decorating addict, collecting books on decorating, stashing them with your horde of ribbons from past gifts, little trinkets left over from craft projects, and snips of favorite rooms from those shelter magazines? Don't bother buying any more books--Tracy Porter will show you what to do with all your precious mementoes, and offers you the freedom to do EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT WITH THEM. Unlike Shabby Chic guru Rachel, or major pain Martha, Tracy says YOU are in charge. Like chartreuse and red velvet? Go for it. After reading her book, you'll be dying to throw parties for little foo foo bunnies and pulling all your treasures out of those boxes and putting them out to admire. If I could get Tracy to come play at MY house, I'd be the happiest person ever. This book will NEVER wind up on a bookshelf; I keep referring to it far to often to not have it at my fingertips!! Buy it, love it, and go for some heavy-duty, grab-your-honey romantic Baroque!!
Tracy Porter is having it all and in her own way!.......1999-01-16
Finally, a visually stimulating and inspiring book that is fun to read. Everyone I've given this book to has enjoyed reading it cover to cover. How refreshing to see a designer that doesn't just rehash the same old traditional style but instead allows her style to evolve. Tracy Porter doesn't try to set some unattainable standard for how one should live, instead she encourages you to "try on" everything you love. Mixing passions with personal style is what it's all about. I found Tracy Porter to be a young and daring spirit and an inspiration for more than decorating my home. Her self made choices of choosing travel over college, moving to the middle of nowhere (Princeton, Wisconsin), starting a business in a chicken coop days after getting married and now running an international design company from somewhere other than NY or LA, makes me think this one is in control of her destiny. She is definitely finding a way to have it all and in her own way and unlike so many other designers, she's not a snob. If you weren't already longing for life at peace in the country, you will be now!

This classic text describes the many afflictions said to result from being given the “evil eye”—as recorded in the days of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans up to the late 19th century. A thorough study of the notion about harmful or bewitching stares, it focuses on superstition and folklore surrounding the use of gestures, amulets, incantations, and other protective acts to ward off power of the evil eye. Enhanced with hundreds of illustrations of evil-preventing charms—from the author’s personal collection—this in-depth study will appeal to students and scholars of folklore and anyone intrigued by tales of the supernatural. 199 illus.

A Treasure Trove of Charming Information.......2005-06-11
What can I say about this book? If you are Pagan or a witch of any kind, this is an indispensible resource. Written over one hundred years ago and reprinted in 2004, it contains excellent museum quality drawings of charms and history that is not prevalent in modern books on spellcrafting. Even such information as it offers as an aside to its main thesis is pertinent to anyone interested in magickal and mythical studies as well as superstitions. This is a scholarly work which does not adopt a superior attitude with readers. Though its ultimate audience was not meant to be any but folklorists and other scholars, the sheer weight of information contained in this book makes it a must have for any Pagan or Witch interested in more indepth studies than modern publishers are willing to offer us.
Books like this gem are just not being written any more.

Book Description
Terence Fisher brought the modern Gothic horror film to life in the second half of the twentieth century. As director John Carpenter (Halloween) notes in his introduction, Terence Fisher and The Curse of Frankenstein was the beginning of it all for the modern horror film...
Customer Reviews:
The charm of evil: the films of Terence Fisher.......2006-09-26
" The charm of evil " is until today the most exhaustively documented book about the work and life of horror movies' master Terence Fisher -or as he prefered to named them " adult fairy tales " - the most influential film creator in the ground of the " fantastique " who took the genre into a more artistic and symbolic way. The book ( almost 600 pages ) contains comments of Fisher himself and from many members of Hammer about his filmwork, many photographs taken during his shootings, the plot of all his movies and his complete filmography chronologically arranged with technician remarks and the complete cast. The book is opened with a beautiful introduction by John Carpenter ( " The fog " ; " The thing " ). A must to have for all Fisher's fetishists.
"what might be the only type of book on my fav director.".......2000-12-27
Terence Fisher,--what more can i say or comment on who to me is my all-time favorite director of film (thus, most notably the horror field) Terence Fisher not only gave birth to the modern horror film (The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), but his work enfluenced generations to come,(people who we know today, martin Scorseasee, Stevein speilberg ext,) with his masterful works of art. With supream reigning masterpeices such as his 3 best(my opinion) Frankenstein must be Destroyed (1969), wich is a technical masterpeice, not have i seen a film that clicks so well, in it's flawless compostion, and pacing, and story narritive, it's whole cynical veiw of the world,. This with out doubt is Fisher's most cynical piece. The Devil Rides out (1968), is another prime example as being fisher at his very best, exploring human realationships, and his facination for the romantism that he has brought to most his best and personal works. And finnaly The Horror of Dracula (1958), often considered Hammer's crown jewl of horror. This perfectly captures the essence of the stoker novel, and his take on victorian society is superaltive, and not to mention the execution in every scene and shot is absolultely flawless (possiably D.P. Jack Asher's best work). So if u have a great admiration for Terence fisher and his films this is the book to get, trust me, even if u know quit a bit, there is with out a doubt that u will indeed learn more about One of the greatest British-film directors who ever made their mark on the silver screen. "Long live the King!"-

Dixon's Book Pays Tribute to a Great Director.......2000-09-08
It's sad to think that there's only one book in English that deals with the life and work of Terence Fisher. Working within a limited form and exploitation industry, the best of Fisher's films transend craft. There is poetry in the economic way this director manipulates the conventions we take for granted in Horror Movies. Mr. Dixon's book takes Fisher's sense of craft and style seriously. He shows us that Fisher became one of the major artist working in the British film industry. Other well known directors became famous directing big budget projects. But what would a David Lean do if he had to work with the tight budgets, short shooting schedules, and often on the same sets from film to film the way Terence Fisher had to work? One of the most remarkable things about Fisher is that he took what others would consider limitations and created enduring works of art; visually stunning, compelling and poetic works of art. Dixon's book validates this fact. I learned a great deal from it and enjoyed the insider's view it communicates. Thank-you, Mr. Dixon.
