Secret Window, Secret Garden.......2004-12-02
This is a really great book, from the beginning you are hooked to read more of the book. this is a type of story you think you solved the story then you mind something out and you are total lost. but you are easily but back on track. this book is very detailed and has alot of scenery. what i think is so good about this book is that the Stephen King allows you to get inside of the charactors' head and let you see what they are seeing and thinking. I am also impressed with all the drama that takes place in the story.
Growing up Nigger Rich.......2004-06-26
This is an enlightening story about the social strata and racial prejudice that existed in a small southern town. The story focuses on a prominent African American professor, Gayla Tyner, who returns to her home after many years of living up north. She finds that although she has grown, the old town has remained the same. The time there allows her to slow down, reflect back on her life and rediscover what really matters.
Growing Up Nigger Rich: Wealthy in Wisdom.......2002-10-05
Gwendoline Y. Fortune's novel Growing Up Nigger Rich seems at first to tell a straightforward, simple story. College professor Gayla Tyner pays a visit of determined self-discovery to her parents and hometown. Caught in the ambiguities of a troubled marriage relationship, she contemplates her family relationships, connects with old friends, considers her options.
But scratch the surface of Fortune's story, and you find a commentary full of wisdom and experience that proves the old saying that the personal is political. Gayla embodies the peculiar social and economic history of this country. She is a daughter of privilege, yet as vulnerable as any African American to the insults and outrages of racism. Through her story, we see the history of social change in this country and are confronted with troubling questions that remain. Who are we? What have we gained, and what have we lost? And most importantly, where are we going?
Growing Up Nigger Rich is about reconciliation: Gayla's need for personal reconciliation with herself, her father, her husband's infidelity; but also America's need for reconciliation of its present with its past. Thanks to Gwendoline Fortune's skill as a storyteller, this is an alternately painful and exhilirating, ultimately enriching and most engaging process.

very stunning book.......2002-09-08
this is the kind of book that once you start reading it you can't put it down because it speaks the Gospel truth on things.the book in so many ways reminds of you are getting to big for your britches.or have you forgotten who you are?I truly enjoy Her Showcasing Her Intelligence for something more&greater to me still in this Society there is nothing more Dangerous than a Black Person that happens to Be Smart&On the Ball.throw Success into the Mix&"Haters" both Black&White are Scared.but for different reasons.I enjoyed this Book fully.
A thoroughly satisfying read!.......2002-07-08
This novel elegantly portrays the psychological impact that segregation had on those who lived through it-and on the rest of us by association. It is an excellent narrative of our struggles with memory and its hold on our present selves. As an oral historian, I find that this novel breathes life into the painful stories of segregation that I encounter regularly. A must read for anyone who cares about America and the necessary healing our difficult history demands.
Finally, Fortune's prose is both lyrical and concise-overall, a thoroughly satisfying read.

Book Description.......2005-08-06
Natural Enemies.... Katrine Campbell had come to the Highlands to rediscover her Scottish roots. If truth be told, she longed for some of the adventure her life in England had sorely lacked. But never in her wildest imaginings had she conjured a raven-haired rogue as dangerous -- and breathtaking -- as her kidnapper, Raith MacLean. The only thing the young MacLean laird despised more than the traitorous Campbells was the English. Katrine Campbell had the misfortune of being both -- which made her a perfect pawn in his campaign to harass his ruthless neighbors. Then Raith began to see that love caused more trouble than enmity when he lost his heart to his beautiful, unruly captive.
Tender Feud's Rating.......2002-03-05
I first read Tender Fued about a year ago and it is the type of book that you can read over and over again. I have read it so many times that it is really beginging to wear and tear. It's the type of book that makes you stay up all night reading because you cant wait to see what happens. I apprecate the fact that includes the importance of family and honer in it as well. It holds a great deal of romance in it without being too graphic, which I also apprecateted

Pure Gold.......2005-05-12
This book, along with The Cave of Time, made everybody my age in the early eigties want to choose their own adventure, either in this series or any of the other clones that it brought about. What UFO 54-40 teaches us is the blatant futility of aspiring for a perfect or utopian society unless we as a people learn to collectively cheat and read ahead in the book.
Kidnapped by aliens!.......2005-04-01
You were aboard a supersonic jet, going from New York to Paris, when a huge, gleaming white cylinder shoots out of the clouds. The next thing you know you are inside the spaceship the Rakma, a captive of the U-TY, masters of the space craft.
Will you cooperate, pretend to cooperate or try to escape? What you decide to do might free you or enslave you for life. This Choose Your Own Adventure book seems a tad more logical. Choices sometimes result in major changes. The story line is interesting and the artwork by Paul Granger is cool. There is even a layout of the spaceship. The character of Kim Lee is even cute! One of the better of the series.

CYOA done right.......2004-07-27
This is one of the few CYOA books that I felt deserved special attention. You learn and discover new things with every choice made, and things don't change willy-nilly just because you went left instead of right. What I mean here is the cause doesn't changes, only the effect. The endings are also concrete and mostly void of the abstract, questionable type. Take a look inside the ufo!
Rules are made to be broken.......2003-10-17
I was in third grade when I stumbled upon my teacher's (Mrs. Smith) copy of this book in our classroom. It was the first time I had ever seen a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book. I was enthralled from the get go. As a young child, the ability to choose your path through the story made reading more immediately interactive (as video games purport to be today) and allowed someone (me) with a very low level of patience and attention span to learn to love to read. Above this, there is one very interesting fact about this book. There is an ending that cannot be reached by following the very foundational rules of the book. It must either be found on accident (by turning to the wrong page) or by systematically breaking down the book's paths and realizing one page has no connection to any of the others. It seems very elementary to anyone of any age and experience today, but it struck home to me then a very important lesson - follow your own path, break rules, don't accept anything as fact, dance to the beat of your own drum. Pretty empowering thing to learn from such a seemingly innocuous book huh?
One of Edward Packard's best CYOA books.......2003-05-28
I used to love these books as a kid, and even though invariably thought that those by Edward Packard were the best. This was my third favorite book, behind two other Edward Packard CYOA books Hyperspace and Survival At Sea. This book is only book in the series that also features a unique "special ending" that cannot be encountered through normal decision making. Can you stumble upon paradise?? Get the book to find out!
Recommended for anybody who enjoys the Choose Your Own Adventure genre, and especially for kids who enjoy science fiction.
THE MOTHER OF ALL BOOKS!!!!!.......1998-08-29
The greatest book ever.
Product Description
Choose Your Own Adventure books have been enjoyed by children for years. The interaction with the plot and the unpredictable turns and twists capture a child's interest and spark his imagination. What happens next in the story? It all depends on the choices you make. How does the story end? Only you can find out! And the best part is that you can keep reading and rereading until have had not one but many incredibly daring experiences!
Customer Reviews:
Doesn't actually..........2007-05-19
This little book doesn't actually tell you how to read chant. It seems more like a how to conduct it lesson rather than "what the heck do those dots mean?"
It could be useful for a choir director who knows how to read chant notation already but needs help directing a choir. At least, thats the impression I got.
Not Simple, Not Helpful.......2007-04-19
Simple? This is actually layman's attack on the old Solesmes method in order to advance, well, not much at all. He asserts the proposition that chant cannot be sight read by groups but rather that everyone must hang on every note of the director and mimic him. He further says that chant has no rhythm of its own. My goodness: it's a wonder anyone sings it at all! Indeed, he doesn't come anywhere close to describing how to sing a single one. He discusses some particular chants but never mentions where they fit in liturgy. He is fixated on the old St. Gall neumes to the exclusive of every advance since then -- and then wraps it all up in the garb of the Cardine school. It is really a radically unhelpful volume, and I'm keeping my rhetoric really in check here. Indeed, I feel bad for anyone who buys this book in the hope of singing chant.
Difficult to use for non-experts.......2006-04-18
The title of this book is very, very unfortunate. I had to ask my wife (who holds a BA in Music) to explain a large part of the introduction to me, because it uses terms and concepts from medieval music that lay people are not familiar with. (I say this as someone who has sung in choirs for over a decade and can read music just fine.) Very little help is provided with understanding the rather complex medieval chant notation, which means the provided chants are difficult to use unless you find another source for understanding the notation.
I also found the author's ideas about including Latin chant in services to be rather silly-he argues that including the "earliest of the early" Christian practices is crucial, and yet, the early church practiced in a variety of languages, Latin probably latest after Greek and Aramaic. And the chant provided in the book is 9th century and later, not "the earliest of the early."
So give this book a pass unless you're already an expert. Nothing here is "made simple," and the chants are not useful unless you're interested in including Latin in your services. It seems to be intended mostly for conductors and directors of church choirs.
Chant NOT Made Simple.......2005-12-31
Unfortunately, there is nothing in this book that makes gregorian chant "simple".
First, it is *very* short. A mere 57 pages in a smaller-than-average size book. Everything having to do with explaining chant notation is contained in 4 short pages (the amazon.com "excerpt" has half of the entire explanation), and leaves a lot out. Latin pronunciation takes 2 pages. Learning to chant takes 2 pages. The explanation of the 8 gregorian "modes" takes up all of 3 sentences (compare that to the wikipedia entry). The entire rest of the book (about 75% of the book, 43 pages) is sample chants (latin lyrics and notation) with translation and commentary.
Second, the book assumes that you have a lot of musical background. Music terms are used frequently without, or with very little, explanation ("dominant", "final", "c-clef", "f-clef", "ornament", "ornamented minor third"). The most basic chant notation, the square shaped "neume" is never actually introduced and defined -- you have to figure it out from the context of the sentences. A chart on page 4 has no explanation whatsoever (the author must have assumed that it was self-explanatory).
Third, the use of a complicated set of hand-written notations in the sample chants, adds an entire level of complexity to it all. Sometimes these notes are so frequent and so small, that you can't even tell what the notes are. This seems mostly due to the quality of the photographic reproductions (and reductions) of the sample chant notation.
There is no discussion whatsoever of the practice, becoming more common now, of chanting in English.
On a positive note, the commentary for the example chants are frequently well-done. In particular, they explain the symbolism that accompanies the chant made for a particular piece.
This book is almost exclusively suited for academics, advanced students and scholars of music, than interested lay people. A lay person with a love for the sound, and with some experience in the choir, will likely walk away more confused after reading this book than they were at the beginning.
Update: A far better work is the article "An Idiot's Guide to Square notes" by Arlene Oost-Zinner and Jeffrey Tucker. Google it.
May not get you singing but ..........2005-06-24
What excited me about this book when I first saw it was that it explains the old neumes - the signs over the text that bear no resemblance to our contemporary staff oriented notation. However, the greater value of this volume is the careful notes on performance that are provided for the chants. These notes are otherwise available only if you have a superb chant instructor - something many of us do not have access to. Even if you have no intestest in singing Gregorian chant, these notes teach you to listen well to chant.
This is a very slim volume but it contains a large does of clear and accurate information regarding Gregorian chant.

A good choice.......2007-03-21
I got this cookbook even though there were no reviews, something I usually never do, but I'm glad I did. A few of the recipes rely on packaged foods which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, but overall there are a lot of recipes I'm excited to try.
the book is the perfect size for taking along camping, or for just storing in the kitchen, and its a great price. The book has a lot of info on DO, care, how to cook with charcoal, etc. and in the back is a section on cooking for crowds which is very helpful for feeding large gatherings.
Overall I'm very happy with this cookbook

From high art to kitsch to kitchen appliances, the world of collecting is red-hot. But for the unwary collector, it can be a world fraught with peril. Is that a true first edition or a book-club copy? Was that art-glass lampshade really made by Tiffany, or is it a near-worthless imitation? Before you get out your checkbook, pick up a copy of Laurie Rozakis's The Complete Idiot's Guide to Buying and Selling Antiques. Rozakis has been an avid collector for 20 years and knows the market--and its pitfalls--inside and out.
Rozakis covers some of the hottest collecting markets, from costume jewelry to Pokémon cards. Each chapter has a brief overview of the market, the hottest sectors (at the time the book was published--rather risky in the fickle collecting world), price ranges, what to look for, and what to avoid. In addition, each chapter is liberally sprinkled with tips, hints, and Web sites for further research. Collecting glass? Look for condition, brilliance, and rarity. Don't worry if there is no manufacturer's signature on that Waterford decanter--only 10 percent of cut glass made between 1880 and 1900 was signed. Thinking of buying a first-edition Salinger? If the dust jacket is not in mint condition, you might want to pass.
Rozakis also provides information on cataloging, appraising, and insuring your collection--worksheets included--and suggests some future collectibles that you may have lying around the house right now (you might want to hang on to those Phantom Menace action figures for a while). --Laszlo Simonyi

Of all the books on collectibles I've ever read, this one is by far the most comprehensive and useful. It covers a wide range of subjects and despite the title, it's not written for idiots. Rozakis has a breezy, enjoyable style to go along with the wealth of information on every aspect of collecting. Highly recommended.

I must have been the idiot the book was written for.......2001-01-06
Having been in the antiques business for over twenty years -- buying and selling, owning my own antiques store -- I made the assumption that I know something about antiques. I purchased this book before Christmas and decided I was the idiot this book was written for. It is very well written, funny, insightful and clear. The sections were applicable to my needs, and to put it very simply, I have learned a great deal in a very short time. I will keep this book on hand for reference, it purports to be for idiots, but the benefit will be for all levels -- regardless of your expertise, you will find something that you did not know.
This is it........2001-01-05
Yes, this is just the book you are looking for. Whether an experienced antique enthusiast looking for a quick reference, or a novice looking for a jump start (like I am) - the Complete Idiot's Guide to Buying and Selling Antiques is informative and concise and better yet, a pleasure to read. How can a study guide be so much fun?! Helpful pictures and "AntiqClues" are found throughout.
Emyl Jenkins tells you what it is, how to find it and (the fun part) how to investigate your treasure before you take it home. The quick reference card is invaluable.
Book Description
A charming instruction book in sewing techniques with patterns for clothes for a 16-inch doll, this book was originally for children. Adult doll collectors are now using this as a wonderful reference for sewing for dolls such as Schoenhuts, bisques, compositions, and others from the early years of this century. 100+ illustrations. 280 pages.
Customer Reviews:
Southworth.......2006-10-26
I had the copy of this book that was purchased for my mother in 1920 and I used it as a nine year old to learn to sew - almost 50 years ago. My doll may have had somewhat dated clothes, but part of what I learned was how to alter the looks to make them more up to date. My one disappointment with the paperpack edition is that the original had tissue patterns that could be removed and used along with a paper gatefold that could be traced. My original still has many of the tissue patterns. None-the-less, the paperback is still a fabulous book to teach children hand sewing.
Priceless.......2005-03-06
The Mary Frances Sewing Book was originally published in 1913 and recently reprinted in the late 1990's. An Edwardian girl staying with grandma for a few months during the summer meets the "Thimble People" (needles, scissors, pincushion, etc.) who engage her in weekly sewing lessons. The reader can work through the lessons, from learning stitches to sewing doll clothes with Mary Frances as directions with illustrations are given throughout the text.
One practical aspect of this book is that basic hand sewing stitches are taught with descriptions and illustrations. I found this part very educational since the only sewing stitch I learned in childhood is the "running stitch". I had no idea there were so many stitches for hand sewing that can be applied to hand sewing garments. I also learned the strawberry tassle on my tomato pin cushion is an "Emery Bag", which can be used for cleaning needles as you pull them through the little bag.
If you purchase a copy of this book sold in its original condition, it comes with patterns to make the garments Mary Frances makes for her doll. However, based on illustrations and the time period, Mary Frances' doll is a 16 inch doll with a composition body and a porcelain head. While the fashions are appropriate for this kind of doll, they are not necessarily appropriate for a modern doll. There are many more current pattern books and pattern sources to sew for both modern dolls and antique/antique reproduction dolls. The only use I would see for the patterns is for use by the individual who would like to specifically work through the book.
That said, I loved this book! I am not going to stop sewing doll clothes on my machine or start dressing my modern doll in Edwardian fashions. I loved this book for what it is-an example of structured sewing lessons used by girls 100 years ago, when girls practiced their skills on doll clothes but would one day use them for sewing and mending their family's clothes.
I also enjoyed the story "sewn" into the lessons. The talking scissors and pincushion, etc. argue with each other like siblings; making the characters more interesting and adding a bit of spice to the story. The sewing bird talks in rhyme; carrying the text along quickly. Mary Frances misses her family while at grandma's house, and has a few other brief adventures inside and outside of her sewing lessons. If you enjoy sewing for dolls and have a taste for a nostalgic, old-fashioned childhood, then this book will be priceless!
Charming.......2003-09-22
This book is essential for all little girls (and not so little girls!) learning to sew. There has yet to be a childs sewing book as well done as Mary Frances and the Timble People.
If you think this book, written in the Edwardian era, would probably be too hard or full of too many confusing terms for a child, think again! The projects are direct, simple, fast, and most of all, fun. With parental assistance, children as young as seven could easily work through this book, and very young children could enjoy the story by itself without even doing the projects. The doll patterns are charming and work up quickly, the style simple and straightforward, and the little story about the 'Timble People' is utterly adorable.
16 inch dolls are hard to come by, and I know this is one drawback of the book. However, you can easily re trace the patterns to fit an 18 inch ('American Girl' or 'Gotz' doll.) Take your pattern peice(s) and retrace on another peice of paper, adding one inch to every side. Follow instructions as usual. For loose fitting patterns like the apron, the pinafore, etc, this wasn't even nessisary.
An all around wonderful book!
16" Doll Pattern Not Included.......2002-09-24
Just purchased this book to give as a Christmas present for my Mom. During the summer and after school, Mom looks after two of my neices that are 5 and 8 years old.
The book is softcovered, consisting of 280 pages and the illustrations within are fully black and white. I like this book as the patterns are full sized and "reads" extremely well for a child, with directions clearly written.
I rate this book 4 stars because the 16" doll pattern IS NOT included as a project with the book. Major bummer! The 16" companion doll pattern named "Mary Marie" Making Memories (designed by Ellen Thompson) must be purchased separately. I've recently located such pattern and it was hard to come by. (The Mary Marie doll is also sold as a porcelain reproduction and she is beautiful.)
Truly, I believe this book makes an excellent tool to create beautiful home spun gifts and memories when used by a loving adult (Mother/Nana) and child. What a wonderful way to learn to sew!
The best book there is for teaching handsewing to the young.......2000-07-24
While all the Mary Frances series is excellent, I found the sewing book the best of the bunch. The basic premise is that various sewing implements come to life for Mary Frances, a girl of about 9 or so, and they teach her how to sew, beginning with outfitting a sewing basket, then learning 10 or so basic stitches using the kind of cloth that people do counted cross stitch on, then progressing to a sampler, and then on to doll clothes. The Art Deco style of the illustrations is very reminiscent of the L. Frank Baum Oz series. One can enjoy the book just as a delightful fairy story, or one can use it as the basis of a hand-sewing curriculum. I used this to teach my 9 y.o. daughter, and she enjoyed it thoroughly, often waking in the morning and working on her sewing while sitting on her bed; I look forward to teaching other groups of girls in 4-H or at the Waldorf school that my daughter attends.

Great Book!.......2002-01-04
This book is LOADED with beautiful and inspiring pictures. It may be based on decorating with Waverly fabrics but you can get tons of other decorating ideas for indoors and out.
EXCELLENT...Very helpful.......2001-03-02
I have always loved Waverly products. When I came across this book in the library I grabbed it out of curiosity and absolutely loved it! Finally, a book that takes you through the home decorating process step-by-step in with easy to understand details. Before you even learn about color, that authors ask that you take a few simple (and fun) quizzes that help you hone in on your style.
The great thing about the quizzes is that they are actually personality profiles, meaning they revolve around your lifestyle...how you presently live and the daily choices you presently make. There is no discussion of what colors you like, whether you prefer country or contenporary, etc., until you have actually finished the personality profile. Besides, most people aren't aware of the fact that their home SHOULD be a reflection of how they live, they just want it to look nice!
Then the discussion on basic decorating techniques (beginning with a great primer on the color wheel, complementary colors, colors that reflect mood, etc.) begins and you start the journey of developing your own personal style. The information is presented in an simple, entertaining manner and the photos are gorgeous!
This book was a TREMENDOUS help for me when I became frustrated with my present decor and wanted a change (but I didn't know in which direction to go and I certainly didn't want to waste a lot of money). I highly recommend it, you'll refer to it often, even as you make the slightest changes around your own home.
Enjoy.

Absolutely excellent!.......2000-05-24
The best and most helpful book--to date--on the subject of decorating; how to determine your personal style; how to discover your color preferences, etc. Exceptional!
A rare and much appreciated treat.......2000-03-02
Other books in this category seem to take a sewing project approach. I never plan to sew anything, so that's not what I wanted. I'm glad I happened on this book, because it's about decorating with fabrics and wall coverings, not simply stitching up a pillow or slipcovers. Now I can plan my decorating scheme and leave the sewing to my seamstress.
Love decorating with wallpaper? Buy this book........2000-01-06
I love color, pattern, and wallpaper. (Have you ever tried to find a book that shows rooms decorated with wallpaper and tells you how to decorate with them? They don't exist.) Until I saw this book (by accident at the book store), I could not find a book that gave me this much information on how to decorate the way I like to. (I like to start a project at the wallpaper store). This is a breath of fresh air.

A Piece of Art.......2002-07-18
This book is so thick and big that you may need to position yourself first before lifting it.
It is housed in a gold slip case, with a vermillion book cover profusely foiled in gold and calligraphic letterings.
There is a brief commentary and the card illustrations are presented in a chronological order.
The art work is just breathtaking & beautiful. From the simple designs of doves to grand sweeping snowscapes & forests. Each evokes the magic & spirit of Christmas.
It's a MUST for those who like Eyvind Earle's style & artistry, and appreciate the simplicity of Christmas card illustrations.
A MUST for anybody who loves art..........2002-04-18
Even though I am fortunate to own several of Mr. Earle's prints and one original (hence am clearly a fan), I was not prepared for this book. The amazing variety of styles, the celebrations of color, the technical perfection - this book surpasses all superlatives. I had no idea that Mr. Earle could DO some of the things which he did! I can only look at a few pages at a time, as the work is overwhelming. Bravo for publishing this collection. Thank you Amazon.com for making it available.
Astounding Book.......2001-05-04
The most extraordinary book of art I have ever seen - everything, from the case, the cover, the Christmas cards, all of it are wonderful. I never tire of looking through.

... and own a bit of magic too. Evyind Earle's artwork is singularly unique and just as divinely beautiful. If you are a follower of his work, this book, despite the hefty price is a must-have. It's filled with page after glossy page of many of his finest works in paint and seriograph. The beauty of the artwork, which ranges from blissful snow-covered landscapes and mystical trees to graceful human figures and deep shadows with vibrant colors, is heightened by the sheer elegance of this huge cloth-bound book, decorated with gold detailing on the cover.
Although the artwork in this book was primarily published as holiday cards, this is not a book to pull out only once a year! The images range from decidedly Christmasy to natural landscapes and flowers. Unlike some of the other published books about Evyind Earle, this volume contains a broader scope of his work, and literally every page is a full color glossy print.
This book is also the closest you'll come to owning some of the priceless pieces this man has created over the years. Display it proudly on your coffee table, or curl up with it every once in a while and escape into the lands of light and texture that Evyind Earle has so exquisitely painted...

She was George Ballanchine's muse for 20 years and his wife for 6; together they made the New York City Ballet an essential part of American culture with his choreography and her dazzling, technically bravura dancing in "Firebird," "Swan Lake," and other modern classics. Maria Tallchief's dignified autobiography describes their groundbreaking artistic collaboration with satisfying thoroughness. She is reserved about their personal relationship but candid about the increasing favor Ballanchine showed to younger dancers, which led to her departure from the company in 1966. Her story captures a key moment in ballet history.
Book Description
A fascinating self-portrait of the fairy-tale life of a woman who understood that a committed talent could transform the world around her."Maria Tallchief and American ballet came of age in the same moment...... Her story will always be the story of ballet conquering America. It was and is an American romance."-Arlene Croce, The New Yorker
Customer Reviews:
A very interesting account of a dancer's life.......2000-06-23
I had not taken ballet lessons for several years when I picked up this book, but just by reading it, I was inspired to sit up straight, pull my shoulder blades together, and even (occasionally) point my toes. The book is especially intriguing because it integrates Ms. Tallchief's private and professional lives so closely, and because it contains many pages of beautiful photos. I cannot say, however, that this book is impossible to put down; I read a bit of it every few months.
Divine.......2000-06-04

She is a true superstar and a great woman.
Wyoming Ballet Students.......2000-04-10
My 6th grade reading group read this story (excerpt) from the book and we throughly enjoyed the segment. We used the internet to find more information about Maria Tallchief. They found the story helpful especially the two girls who find studying ballet in Wyoming is a less recognized pursuit than elk hunting and snowmobiling. Maria Tallchief's story is timeless and inspiring even 35 years away from her peak fame years. Our group enjoyed reading about a Native American who has made an impact on the arts world. Thanks. Mrs. Clark's 6th grade reading group, Afton Wyoming.

Book Description
Growing up on the Osage Indian reservation, Maria Tallchief was a gifted pianist and dancer. According to Osage tradition, women are not permitted to dance, but Maria's parents recognized her gifts and allowed her to break the rule. Then when Maria reached the age of twelve, her father told her it was time to choose between her two loves. Maria chose ballet. It was a decision that would change not only the course of her life, but the face of classical ballet in America. The fascinating story of Maria Tallchief's rise to become America's prima ballerina will captivate young readers.
"Tallchief's single-minded passion, conveyed in a clear, poetic narrative, will hold appeal and meaning for an audience beyond that of hopeful ballerinas." (The Horn Book)

Tallchief Americas Prima Ballerina .......2007-02-21
The story Tallchief Americas Prima Ballerina is by Maria Tallchief and Rosemary Well. This story is a very heart touching story about a girl following her dreams. The book shows you how hard work and dedication gets you far in life.
The detailed pictures go great with the descriptive words. They really elaborate what's going on in the story. This realistic story shows the reality of decisions making in life. In this story, She had to make the decision on where she was going in life.
This book also shows the main characters culture and background. Maria Tallchief is half Osage and half Scots-Irish.
I think that Tallchief America's Prima Ballerina is a good book because it shows the ambition of a ballerina and what it takes to be one. It also shows reality of a life determining decision, and also teaches about chasing and achieving your dreams.

Tallchief, America's Prima Ballerina.......2000-05-22
Tallchief, America's Prima Ballerina, written by Maria Tallchief with Rosemary Wells, is a lovely, lyrical account of a young girl's fierce desire to express the music she felt within her through ballet."I was born with music that flowed through my body as naturally as blood in my veins." Both a talented pianist and dancer, Maria was encouraged by her father to choose one "star". "In the way that very young people choose, from the heart, I chose (ballet) and I chose right". Any young reader would choose right in selecting this inspiring account of a unique American star.
