Though each story stands alone, there is the connectedness of family saga as we are introduced to distinct, evocative members of this modern-day ranch family. A truly pleasant read.

Pritchett evokes the vivid images of landscape, ranching and families in the West. Set along Rocky Mountains, these stories show the beauty and sometimes messy reality of farming, ranching, and living. When writing in her clear-eyed prose, Pritchett has perfect pitch: all of her charcters and stories ring true. Highly Recommended.

This is an outstanding book! Pritchett' interconnected stories are a matter-of-fact and essential portrayal of the contemporary American West. Pritchett's characters are vivid in spite of (or beause of) her simple prose. Through the characters you get a feel for the beauty and stark reality of raising cattle, and families, in the Intermountain West. A refreshing read among the usual clutter of literature today.

A Great Collection of Short Stories.......2001-12-13

Hell's Bottom is a poignant collection of short stories that chronicles some of the watershed events in the lives of a Colorado ranch family. It's quite enjoyable on several levels.

I especially appreciated the attention to detail about life in modern rural America. This book chronicles ranching activities in an accurate manner- one can tell the author is familiar with this way of life. I don't believe that an outsider could have presented such an honest portrait. This realistic backdrop helped the already interesting characters become even more alive for me.

Hell's Bottom is an excellent read. I look forward to more by this author.

Uncommonly Insightful.......2001-11-25

Pritchett's short stories are psychologically insightful into life's sometimes painful details and hidden triumphs -- expressed within the framework of everyday existence. Hard to find writing like this -- definitely worth your time.

Tess Gerritsen is astonishing.......2007-09-08

Read Ms. Gerritsen's books with a highlighter so I can underline and not forget my favorite one liners. She is positively astonishing and I can't wait to get The Bone Garden because I just finished The Mephisto Club and didn't move until the last word. I have read all the rest and I am deeply disappointed that I only have one left until the next Jane/Maura thriller comes out. Four years ago I was walking by another employee's cubicle and saw "The Surgeon" lying on her desk, so I picked it up to read the first few pages. I was hooked and on my way to the bookstore after work. And I spend more time after finishing each book researching and reading about the fascinating stuff in the books - mythology, religion, medicine. For someone who loves books and loves to read, these books are delicious!!!!!

The Sinner.......2004-01-06

My gosh, what a book!!!This is my first time reading Tess Gerritsen, she is as good if not better than Patricia Cornwell. I literally could not put this book down, there are so many twists and turns and surprises. A must read.

Not up to par.......2003-10-17

If you are attracted to Tess Gerritson's novels of medical suspense, then this book is not for you. It was written well before her newer releases like The Sinner, The Apprentice, Gravity, etc. While a good effort at combining the suspense of a woman on the run from a mad bomber, this novel falls flat of creating any emotional connection to the characters. The heroin, Nina, is being stalked by a bomber, after being left at the alter by her horrendous fiancée. You'd think she'd have a lot on her mind, yet she still finds time to fall for the bomb squad investigator assigned to protect her. The book goes on to detail her thinking as well as his in a pathetic tennis match of who loves who, who doesn't love who, whose too scared to love who, etc. Ultimately, at the end of the book where I would normally be turning pages awaiting the climax, I found myself not caring whether Nina did get out of the whole mess alright, and was frankly irritated by the whole romantic banter part of this book. Bottom line, if you like The Sinner, The Apprentice, Gravity, Bloodstream, etc stick to Gerritson's newer work and stay away from Keeper of the Bride.

Okay book.......2003-01-24

This was an okay book, it wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. If I like a book I can usually finish it in a day or two this one took a couple of weeks for me to read it didn't hold my attention. The book starts with a wedding were the bride has been stood up at the altar. When she leaves the church it is blown up by a bomb that was set to go off in the middle of the ceremony. Who was it meant for and why is the main theme of the book. I found it to be a really slow read and didn't really care what happened to the characters.

Earlier Attempt By A Great Author!! Really Worth Reading!.......2003-01-16

Since I have only read Ms. Gerritsen's newer works such as "The Surgeon" and "The Apprentice" it was fun to read one of her earlier works and to see how far she has come as a storyteller.

This is the story about Nina Cormier who is a ER nurse from a very affluent but dysfunctional family. The story opens with Nina being left at the alter. To add insult to injury while she is sitting in a car waiting to go home the church blows up. And still in the same day someone tries to drive her off the road. Why is this all happening to her?

Bomb detective Sam Navarro is called to the scene of the latest bombing and ends up questioning the bride to be. Sam has his own problems from the past and really has no plans to ever share his life with someone else. Now he finds himself drawn to the witness and there is still the huge mystery as to how Nina fits into the puzzle of the recent bombing, and other murder attempts.

An Evolving Tapestry

Although Magdalen's Way is intriguing fiction, this inspiring tale resonates wisdom for a new age. Not exclusive to women, its feminine voice has a deep impact that can profoundly change and empower any reader seeking growth and enlightenment. The very source of Dr. Colver's book - a result of dream sequences over a period of several years - is in itself receptive and "feminine." Excellent Perspective on the Eternal Feminine.......2004-02-26

If you liked the DaVinci Code, you will love this book. It looks at the Holy Grail and what and who the Holy Grail represents.

This book gives an excellent perspective of what Jesus taught about Compassion, Love, Acceptance, and Hope for the future. It is told and experienced through the feminine energy of Mary of Magdala. This book gives a matriarchal balance to the patriarchal theme of most religions in today's world. We need to understand that violence, war and hatred no longer serve our world; we need to get back to the principles that Jesus and Magdalene taught two thousand years ago. This book teaches Faith, Hope and Charity, all aspects of pure Love.

It is a treasure if you are seeking a new peaceful way to live.

Kudos to Arlene Colver for this wonderful creation.

Experience the Way for yourself.......2003-11-04

For me I can't resist this authors way of illustrating and explaining the Univers and it laws. Wether she is doing so through one of Magdalen's, Jesus's or another charactors stories there is a fresh perspective and easy to understand, simple and soft way of doing this that our Bible at times falls short of doing so. As beautiful as many of the book are written this extention of our decipleship brings an awareness that many may be seaching for in their Spiritual journey. I recommend you accompion Magdalen on her journey and expernce the Way yourself.

I finished your book on Mary of Magdala. This is a beautifully written, wise, important piece of work.

You write of the depth and quality of Mary and Jesus' connection. All prior messages I got from the Bible were that truly good and holy people lived celibate, singular lives. Your story brings to light the importance and power of relationships between men and women. Jesus, whose life and words people still study and are guided by, did not live alone without a partner. This is GOOD news.

I have worked with women who have been raped. They described it to me as a wound that went right to their soul. How shattering for you to experience this in the way that you did. Thank you for having the courage to write of this. I believe that this, too, is an important piece of information to come to light. In your story both the masculine (Jesus) and his counterpart, the feminine (Mary) were physically and psychologically brutalized and humiliated by humanity. And they both went forward, past the experience, in love. Mary was a pregnant widow at her most vulnerable. The story of how she moved beyond that is powerful.

Being a widow myself with two young children who experienced the horror of seeing her husband hanging dead, I felt a connection to Mary's story. It has been a source of strength for me to see how she moved forward with faith, hope and charity.

I also feel that her background as a priestess in the temple is important. Many people of her time viewed her as a prostitute. Historically, she was literally written off. I thing she personifies the feminine - soft, open, and receptive. Again, that which is not understood is scorned.

I could go on and on. I loved how she interfaced with other spiritual belief systems. This is a model that should be followed today. And, is there a connection between Sharon's children and a legendary just ruler like King Arthur? And . . .

It is time that Mary's story be told. Thank you for allowing her to tell this through you. And, thank you to her for finally sharing her story.

This imaginative novel speculates about the second most enigmatic woman of Christianity might have been like and what role she might have played in the rise of the Way. Drawing upon the gnostic legends, Mary Magdelene is elevated to a position of pre-eminence among the followers of Christ, above even the Holy Mother or the Saints Peter and Paul. She is credited, by the author, with having the greatest comprehension of Jesus' teachings, enabling her to be a leader among the Apostles after His return to the Father. In fact, the story takes her importance a step further, implying that she truly knew Jesus as His wife and mother of His child. The plot takes Mary and St James to the Celtic land to bring the natives of Britain the message of Christianity. It is here that Mary spend the remainder of her life among those of the Druidic religion.

** While the author exercises great imagination in fusing legends and New Age concepts with true Christianity and does accurately convey how loving Christ is, it is to be hoped that anyone seeking a real understanding of Christ and His teaching will be lead to the Bible. **

Super Reader.......2007-08-31

Well, one would be, anyway. Welcome to Thesrad, one of the Sunnydales of the Hyborian Age.

Sonja is wandering through some mountains, gets really sick (skimpy scale mail I guess leaves you prone to the flu, in winter climes). Barely makes it through, and collapses. Luckily, she is found by the deposed lord of Thesrad. He reminds her of the erstwhile boyfriend from earlier in the series, a true leader of men.

Unfortunately for said lord, he has been deposed to a vulture god worshipping extremely powerful sorcerer. Fortunately, said sorcerer's daughter, unlike the scion of Endithor, is a half snakewoman hybrid, who is the agent of a snake goddess. Needless to say, the two do not get along at all. Serpent wench Ilura offers her aid to Sonja and her new friend. Sonja, of course, after nice bloke helps her, is all hot for some sorcerer slaying and demon killing. Lord takes two volunteer squads into the city to try and foment an uprising. Serpent woman vs summond vulture demon = draw, luckily for those of the local band left behind by the boss.

The little adventure works, but lots of them die. Sonja takes the magic dagger off the gate to hell. Ooops. Did have good sorcerer killing powers though, or at least slowed them down. Minor league sorcerers went to work for Kushian vulture boy. 2 out of 7 is probably a good result for 'left alive' for that band, after the carnage in the retaking of the town. After Sonja, a snakey sorceress and a plague of reptiles descend. A bunch of prisoners freed, some nobles rebel, and an extremely bloody time is had by all.

In other words, exactly the sort of pulp fantasy slayage you are generally after.

Albert J. Raboteau is the foremost researcher on African American religious history. "Canaan Land" is the foremost book to start with when seeking to gain an understanding of the flow and focus of African American religious history. Raboteau, as in all his books, combines the scholarship of an academic with the passion of a great writer. The combination produces a book that is wonderfully readable both for the student and the lay reader.

"Canaan Land" is rightly considered a modern-day classic in the genre of African American religious history. Raboteau splendidly weaves together his own insightful commentary with copious first-hand accounts and quotations. Readers are left with an epic telling of the faith of African Americans.

This cookbook is different from any others that I've ever seen. The theme is the 50's, 60's and 70's, and the foods are ones that families would have eaten in front of the TV together. Many of the recipes are adaptations of foods that were found in the old-style TV dinners. Reading this cookbook really took me back in time!

WARNING: For the most part, these are not diet recipes!

The recipes in this book were like a flashback in time to the days of TV dinners on TV tables in front of the TV set. But in a good way, and with real food instead of foil trays. Fun. I really enjoyed reading it!

The book is a good resource. It covers a wide array of holding techniques. However,there is very little info on the turning of items clamped in different ways on the lathe. It is exactly what the title says.

"This book is a history of hypocrisy." So begins Daniel Francis, BC's leading popular historian, as he explores the colourful and ultimately tragic story of prostitution in Vancouver. He writes: "The city's political and social leaders consistently have treated prostitutes as pariahs whose presence was tolerated, sometimes exploited, but never approved. All the while, the authorities collected millions of dollars in fines and licence fees from businesses that everyone knew were, and are, fronts for the sex trade."

Working in long overlooked archives and drawing on personal interviews, Francis shows how in some ways commercial sex has been both a reflection and a result of Vancouver's essential character, with its tolerant social mores, ethnic diversity--and political opportunism. It's a tale that takes in mayors and masseuses, police chiefs and pimps, judges and johns.

Francis explains: "Sex workers have never lacked for customers. What they have lacked is a secure place to conduct their business. A vast off-street sex trade flourished while police, at the urging of politicians vowing to purify the city, concentrated their attention on the comparatively small number of street prostitutes who worked out in the open. Because they were considered a nuisance, these sex workers were hounded from street to street and neighbourhood to neighbourhood [...] These efforts salved the conscience of the morally righteous, but each attempt to discourage prostitution simply forced women to work in increasingly dangerous circumstances." The end result, ultimately, was the tragedy of the Missing Women--murdered sex workers from the Downtown Eastside--and the sensational criminal case that followed.

This book is a welcome escape from the usual exotic kaleidoscope of old Shanghai descriptions of the city as the Paris of Asia, with its underworld, foreign expatriates, princely buildings and so on. On the contrary it documents Shanghai at street level and portrays the every day life of the man in the street. Obviously the work of an academic, it details immigration patterns, the intricacies of byzantine rental agreements, rickshaw fare structures, shikumen house floor plans in a scientific way. A long but fascinating reading, it will only appeal to people who already know the city well and want to go one step further in their understanding of Shanghai - and are not put off by the astronomic quantity of Chinese words contained in its pages.

If you are looking to understand the enigma that is Shanghai, then look no further than Mr. Lu's incredibly insightful "Beyond the Neon Lights". It could be subtitled: "Beyond the hype, the myths, the stereotypes and the cliches," but Mr. Lu is an academic, and uses sound research to sell his books rather than sensationalism. Bravo for him, I say.

Shanghai history books - the sensationalist, badly researched ones, at least - tend to present an Old Shanghai of Gangsters, Bankers, Hookers, and Foreigners...oh my! Even the more thorough ones present mostly the wild advantures of those wacky expatriates, ignoring or neglecting the role and the life of the "laobaixing", the ordinary people of Shanghai.

"Beyond the Neon Lights" fills this very large gap amazingly well. It is dedicated to life in the lanes that were and are the arteries of the city, the source of its lifeblood, the petty urbanites. Lu explores the architecture of the Shikumen, the typical pre-1920s Shanghai lane dwelling, and explains how its system of sub-sub- and sub-letting fomented the complicated communities that emerged there. He also conveys how the social structures and cultural habits changed with the introduction of more modern lanes (with indoor plumbing, fewer households, etc) and the Art Deco highrises.

Every aspect of life in Shanghai was and often still is structured around the lane neighborhood. Although the new-style lanes are less contained, more open, and thus less of a microcosm, both vintages boast their own economy of scale. There is the old-style convenience store, the "tobacco and paper shop", at the entrance, plus a tailor, produce dealer, shoe-repairman, locksmith, pharacist...and more in the larger lanes. Other needs were serviced by the itineret peddlars, selling goods or repairing them or buying rubbish. The latter, Lu explains, were the main source of income for the housekeepers of the middle class.

The roving peddlers still ply their trade in Shanghai's remaining lanes; all that has changed are their regional backgrounds and some of their wares. But now, as then, they are distinguished by the ditties they sing to announce their arrival. I awake every morning to the tune of one of the three rice vendors who frequents my lane; he is followed by a series of seasonal fruit vendors, the chicken man, the beer man, and the used electronic buyers. About once a week the wicker chair repairman wanders by. The travelling cobbler skirts my street, since he has three permanent competitors on the block, but I see and hear him elsewhere. I rarely use their services, but I love hearing them: they make Shanghai Shanghai.

Lu also documents the migration patterns that configured the people who normally count themselves as Shanghainese. The relatively high-class ones came from Ningbo, Hangzhou and elsewhere in Zhejiang Province, the middle class from Jiangsu south of the Yangtze, and the dregs from north of the Yangtze. "Beyond the Neon Lights" goes into interesting depths about the slums of these despised "Jiangbei" people. This was of particular interest to me, as my current and previous residences are adjacent to the most notorious old slums: along the Suzhou Creek, which still exists, and on the Zhaojiabang Creek, which has since given way to a six-lane highway.

I've only seen snippets from this book. But here's a funny thing I noticed in the reviews here...
Two of the reviews were on the *same exact day* almost *exactly a year* after these books came out. The third review is about two months later, almost exactly.
It makes me think that the very *inventor* of the whole Tiki Tribe concept is putting up comments to try and sway people to buy them. In fact yea... I'm pretty darned sure of this. I'll just say that tactics like this used in ANY business are underhanded and manipulative of a buying audience.
Not that I mind all that much. If Mr. Devlin thinks I'm going to buy the book on his "BUY THIS, it's great!" reviews, he's gravely mistaken. I know junk when I see it.

WHAT IS LATENT DEMAND AND THE P.I.E.?

The concept of latent demand is rather subtle. The term latent typically refers to something that is dormant, not observable, or not yet realized. Demand is the notion of an economic quantity that a target population or market requires under different assumptions of price, quality, and distribution, among other factors. Latent demand, therefore, is commonly defined by economists as the industry earnings of a market when that market becomes accessible and attractive to serve by competing firms. It is a measure, therefore, of potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) or total revenues (not profit) if a market is served in an efficient manner. It is typically expressed as the total revenues potentially extracted by firms. The “market” is defined at a given level in the value chain. There can be latent demand at the retail level, at the wholesale level, the manufacturing level, and the raw materials level (the P.I.E. of higher levels of the value chain being always smaller than the P.I.E. of levels at lower levels of the same value chain, assuming all levels maintain minimum profitability).
