too much of a good thing.........2007-03-05
Although this was a erotic book, this was too much of a good thing. Some of it was over kill. This was my first erotia, but I felt it could have been better written. Sorry
1st published rough draft in history of publishing?.......2005-10-11
This story needs massive amounts of editing for basics like plot continuity, characterization, dialogue, etc. You name it -- it needs fixin'. Take it off the market, fix it up -- clarify the premise; make the characters and plot believable; construct some form of internal logic for the plot and for the heroine's propensity for cursing a blue streak. Then, and only then, put it back on the market. It has the potential to be an exciting story, but it's still too raw, too amateurish. In spite of the weakness of this story, I will probably look into other works by this author.

The 10th Legion of Super-Heroes volume in DC's invaluable Archive Editions series catches the Legion in a period of transition in the early 1970s. The LSH was relegated to seven-page stories in the back of Superboy's comic (and not even every issue), and because that's not the ideal format to cover 30 heroes, most of the stories concentrate on a couple Legionnaires. Soon the Legion became popular enough that the title eventually became Superboy Starring the Legion of Super-Heroes, and the issues in this volume do contain a number of milestones of Legion lore. Wildfire makes his debut as an applicant named ERG-1 in issue #195, Bouncing Boy and Duo Damsel get married in issue #200, and then there were the sexy new costumes, including Saturn Girl's pink bikini and Phantom Girl's bell bottoms. The 232-page book includes biographies of the creative talent (including one-shot inker Mike Grell, who would go on to make his own mark on the Legion) and a nice introduction by the artist who grew up on the Legion during this period, Dave Cockrum, before he went on to help reinvent the X-Men. --David Horiuchi

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Part of the comeback of the Legion, with the publication in Superboy, etc. The artwork and costumes were updated, which made a lot of teenage boys and girls happy, and led to further work being done by the artists soon to follow. Some fun stuff here, including a wedding, and the excellent character Wildfire.
The Legion I Remember.......2006-07-23
Any fan of The Legion in the seventies must have this book! The new costumes, Dave Cockrum's complete run as the artist of the series in this one volume, introduction and subsequent joining of Wildfire (originally named Starfire but had to be changed due to a sword & sorcery/ sci-fi concept heroine DC was also publishing, which lasted two whole issues, renamed ERG-1 before publication, and rechristened Wildfire upon his reappearance), the wedding of two Legionnaires, this one has it all.
A Great Time Period for the Legion.......2002-08-29
This covers SUPERBOY (first series) #172-202, a time in the early 1970s when the Legion was saved from obscurity by its loyal fans and brought back as a back-up feature in SUPERBOY... eventually eclipsing Superboy himself and taking over the whole title as "SUPERBOY and the LEGION OF SUPERHEROES". This features the earliest work by Dave Cockrum, the artist who introduced the memorable and often provocative 1970's costumes (Saturn Girl in a bikini, Phantom Girl in cut-out bellbottoms, Princess Projectra in a top held together by only 2 strings!!) Stories include the introduction and inauguration of Wildfire (briefly known as ERG-1) and the marriage of Bouncing Boy to Duo Damsel. Not the greatest writing in the Archives series, but certainly worth reading if only for the artwork and the wedding (the first of many Legion weddings to come).
Product Description
Perhaps the most vitriolic attack ever launched on the American way of living—from politicians to professors to businessmen to Mom to sexual mores to religion—Generation of Vipers ranks with the works of De Tocqueville and Emerson in defining the American character and malaise.
Wylie's classic, written with devastating wit and a pen as sharp as a barber's razor, wages war on all forms of American hypocrisy. Remarkably, or perhaps not so, what Philip Wylie has to say rings as true today as when he first wrote Vipers in 1942, and no doubt it will continue to offend and outrage both the Left and Right.
Harsh, bitter, and filled with venom toward those who have corrupted the America that "could have been," Generation of Vipers will be read with pleasure and indignation a century from now.

Read, But With Discernment.......2005-10-27
"Generation of Vipers" apparently caused quite a stir when it was published in 1942, and it remains a jarring read even in the new century.
The chapter on sexual mores, "A Specimen American Attitude", in which he seems to favor more loose standards, is a pillar-to-post embarrassment. Christians also cannot embrace Wylie's views of Christ and Christianity set out in the chapter "The Man on the Cross".
That being said, in other chapters, Wylie makes some unbelievably frank and insightful observations about many other aspects of American life. A reviewer below notes that Wylie's life was destroyed by the publication of the book. At age 40, did Wylie think that he'd be feted with champagne and caviar for making many of the observations he made? It was as if he was walking through Red Square at the height of Stalin's purges, denouncing Communism at the top of his lungs. Apparently, he needed to be reminded of the old saw that, while you can certainly get in trouble in this world by telling lies, you often get into far more trouble by telling impolitic truths.
Wylie's central message is that people should use their short time on this earth putting the moral ahead of the material, trying to become better people instead of only thinking about their bank balance. I was blown away that the book was published over 60 years ago but still, in most places, seems so fresh today. Barring the unforeseen, sadly, "Generation of Vipers" will be just as topical in 2050 or 2100 as it is today or it was back in 1942 when the book was published.
This book is well worth your time if you can separate the wheat from the chaff, ignoring the places where the author is off base, but enjoying the many other places where he comes across as an American Solzhenitsyn.
A thought in the night........2005-06-04
Reviewing the events of the day as I lay my disturbed head on my pillow, for some reason, "The Generation of Vipers," came to mind. I recalled this book when it was first published, and how impressed I was all those years ago with the courage and insight of Mr.Philip Wylie. I recalled the attacks on so many segments of our society that in my youth I felt were justified.
I immediately searched my collection to see if I still had that book. Strangely, among all the books I have, I immediatly located the book, and in the morning checked it out with the great website, "Amazon.com." from whom I order various books over time.
I know that in re-reading this book, I will not be disappointed and in fact, that the status quo will be equally appropriate as was the state of affairs all those years ago.
I noted at the time that the book was published in 1942, while the country was at War which took an enormous amount of courage. In my edition, there is a forward by Mr. Wylie, dated December 7, 1954, which is very interesting. Informatively, I had first read the 1942 publication, and later aquired the 1955 publicaton.
Since Mr. Wylie has passed away, I must confess that I am tempted at the age of 84, to dissect our status quo as bravely as Mr. Wylie.
There is so much to rip apart, so to speak. Our entire political sysem, how we elect a President, which is highly suspect in these times, elevating a mere politician to "Emperor Status," with perks, such as a flying palace, which in fact is a pink elephant, which is paid for by untold amount of taxpayers. Cunning advisors, speech writers, state of the art teleprompters, spokespersons, etc., to just list a few. In the main, with very few exceptions, both houses of congress are actually representing Special Interests, with their constituents way down on the totem pole, political contributions, an euphemism for "bribery," that is still active, never mind all the talk for reform. Advertising, mostly deceitful, espcially the staged contrived Pharmaceutical commericals, and the tiny unreadable small print in both televison and printed media.
The corporate ownerhip of the public airways and printed media, where we receive manipulated news items. The list is endless.
In second thought, I feel that I am not up to the monumnental task, and hope there is another "Philip Wylie," in our midst to take up the torch and slash away.
Finally, I would recommend that if anyone should read my comments, cast aside for just a little while, all the hype and nonsense, and take the time to read this book, and digest the contents, and when finished, just stop and reflect that we are now living in a society thst is so contrived and manipulated, that the reader just posessing an ounce of native intelligence, would hope for the, "resurrection of Philip Wylie."
It is my belief that Philip Wylie led the way for the Michael Moore's of today.
Finally, I am really looking forward to re-reading, "The Generation of Vipers, and having survived all these years will be able to read and digest every word, and pause every so often and reflect on the horrible charade that passes for what a great democracy should be.
At the time of writing, I am conducting a silent roll call, to see whom among my friends I should order this book as a gift with the hopes that the younger generaion will benefit.
I hope that some big name reviewer would bring this most important book to national attention.
A confirmed skeptic and cynic,

A personal letter.......2005-05-30
Back in 1968, I read Vipers and was blown away. I wrote Mr. Wylie a letter about how much I liked the book and how my own life was moving toward rebellion. I never expected to hear from the author, but I did. He wrote back saying that the publication of Vipers had ruined his life and his family's, especially his daughter's. He disavowed his insights and told me to forget trying to buck "the system."
Nevertheless, it took courage for him to express his views and despite his warning, I followed his lead.
Decades B4 Politically Incorrect.......2001-05-15
I first read this book in eighth grade, stealing it off my father's bookshelf next to the "photography" books. In 1963, this book was 21 years old and still way ahead of its time and simultaneously dated. A great way to learn perspective and curmudgeondry from a logorrheic genius. I keep it low on the shelves, but my 21st century progeny haven't developed the wit to find it. They're too glued to the Nintendo. Oh generation of slugs!
It's a shame the current generation never knew this book.......1999-11-28
In as fewest words possible , I have to praise the author here . An extremely intelligent person with an uncanny perspicacity . The chapter about jesus christ and what he really preached was most memorable . How Philip Wylie knew this even before the dicovery of the gospel of st. thomas is beyond me and shows how smart this man really was (1911 - 1971) . The book's purpose was to "wake you up" from the fugue which you are in from being caught up in the american way of life . If this book causes you to stand back and think , even for a moment , then it has done its duty to you , and you your duty to yourself .

Misogynist Redux.......2006-05-03
Poor Philip. If he had only been born fifty years later he would have his own radio talk show and blog.
Read his words and although some will horrify you, there are glimpses of insight nestled away there that will tickle your funny bone and your intellect.

April Fields Low Carb Desserts.......2007-09-13
I like April's recipes. They are great for low carb. However if you are diabetic, many of the recipes use sugar alcohols and many diabetics can't use the recipes because sugar alcohols can raise blood sugar. So your milage may vary. She does have great recipes and if you can use them, great. I haven't used it as much as I thought I would.
Good Recipes.......2005-02-04
I never thought I'd ever write a review for a cookbook, but here goes. Although there are many recipes in this book that I will probably never try, like every other cookbook I own, the ones I have tried are completely wonderful. The piecrust is amazing and tastes just like the high-carb kind. I can use it with my own recipes. The Cherry Cheesecake is so easy I can make it from memory now. I think the most interesting thing about having this cookbook is the easy access to the author who always promptly answers my questions via email. I guess that is one of the advantages of the new digital age. I could never get that kind of service from Betty Crocker!
I'd give this book five stars if it had color photos and was spiral bound so it would lay flat. But that's just me.
Awesome Sweets!!.......2004-01-24
This book was a godsend to me, as I love baking/cooking for my family who seem to gravitate towards sweets:) I have recently opened a low carb grocery store and recommend this cookbook to all my customers who bake. It can help anyone stay lowcarb without missing their favorite sweet recipes.
Most of the recipes use Maltitol.......2004-01-07
I am guessing that this cookbook was mainly written before Splenda (Sucralose) became available in the U.S. Most of the recipes use Maltitol as the main sweetener, supplemented by a little bit of Stevia. From what I've read elsewhere, Maltitol is a type of "sugar alcohol". Sugar alcohols are safe for diabetics and those on low-carb diets, because they don't get absorbed by the body, and just pass through. Maltitol is used in Atkins chocolate candy bars, and also some brands of candy bars for diabetics. I think it tastes great, with no bitterness or aftertaste. The only apparent drawbacks to Maltitol are (1) the expense, (2) not available at SOME grocery stores, but there are some mail-order sources; and (3) as stated in small print on the labels of some products with maltitol, "excess consumption may cause a laxative effect". In other words, it can cause loose bowels when eaten "in excess". How is "in excess" defined? It depends on your digestive system. Mine is sensitive, so that half of a candy bar sweetened by Maltitol gives me loose bowels. I hear most people are more fortunate with it.
In comparison, Splenda does not have this problem, but does have a tiny bitter after-taste, in my opinion. Some people don't seem to notice the after-taste of Splenda.
I haven't actually tried any of the receipes in this book yet, so I can't comment in that regard. Before buying this book, I recommend buying some candy that contains Maltitol, and see what effect it has on you and your family. Check how many grams of maltitol (or grams of other sugar alcohols) are listed in the nutrition information label, when figuring out how many grams you can tolerate. Some sugar-free candies, such as Russell Stover, and some sugar-free ice creams are sweetened by a combination of sugar alcohols and Splenda. The ratio of sugar alcohol to Splenda varies by brand.
A God-send.......2003-11-19
This book is incredible. My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes this year. We were all concerned about her inability to have the sweet things she loves. This cookbook has put the excitement back into our lives especially with the holidays coming. I recommend it to everyone.

I love depression glass!.......2001-02-20
I have found all of Doris Yeske's books very helpful in both the purchasing and selling of depression glass. They have also been an educational tool in determining the patterns and whether or not the piece is a repro - of which I have found many. I also (in my opinion) find her prices to be more down to earth. If you want a book that you can use - I recommend reading all of Doris Yeske's books.

Decent Overview of Pre-Revolutionary Design.......2005-04-21
This coffee-table book covers the period of 1880-1917, providing a glimpse into the world that was brought to an end with the October Revolution. Chernevich visited Moscow in the late '80s and drew upon the holdings of the Lenin State Library for the book, unearthing items that had not been public displayed since the Revolution. A capable introduction gives the cultural and economic background to put the rest of the book in context. Alas, all the text is rendered in a condensed typeface that is somewhat difficult to read.
The selections are divided into five chapters, each starting with several pages of text leading into lush color reproductions. Chapter One covers the "Style Russe", as exemplified in ornate menus, proclamations, announcements, posters and programs reminiscent of illuminated medieval manuscripts. There are also examples drawn from illustrated folk tales, the most remarkable of which were by Ivan Bilibin. Chapter Two covers the Russian Art Nouveau, mostly via posters, cosmetics and candy packaging, the Russian versions of which weren't strikingly different from their Western European counterparts. Chapter Three covers the "World of Art Group", a sort of loose collective of energetic and prolific St. Petersburg artists underwritten by various industrialist philanthropists. Much of their work falls into the realm of illustration and design of posters, books, theater programs, and smaller pieces to accompany articles, poems, and stories in journals. It's hard to find any kind of unifying style amidst their somewhat unremarkable work.
The largest section of the book is Chapter Four, which deals with"Commercial Graphics". It's stuffed with materials, mostly posters and broadsheets, advertising products ranging including horseshoes, gunpowder turbines, galoshes, various foodstuffs, Singer sewing machines, and of course cigarettes. There are also plenty of examples of packaging and even wine labels. These are incredibly vivid and elaborate works that are somewhat eerie given the revolution that was to come. The final section is about "Political Graphics", which is limited to posters for war bonds and war-related charities, and a great deal of examples of "luboks". These were popular prints showing brightly colored cartoonish war scenes, usually with some kind of off-color verse below about kicking Prussian butt.
On the whole, a decent overview of pre-Revolutionary design work from Russia, probably mostly of interest to those with an interest in Russian art or the history of graphic design. in certain sections the selections get a little repetitive, but that's a minor point.

Phil, a journalist turned novelist, turned playwright, turned near-do-well wanna-be stand-up comedian, agrees to take a comedy gig which gives Luci, his wife, a chance to visit her high school friend, Sara, and her husband, Jerry. Upon their arrival, Phil realizes that Sara is a goldmine of material for his act. He antagonizes and engages Sara in what appear to be playful confrontations, but all the while he is stirring the pot to gather material: until the situation turns dangerous.
Luci, an attorney, discovers that Sara is trying to convince her to advise her and to take her case involving her legal fight with her former husband over the custody of their two boys. However, with Saras undiagnosed borderline personality disorder, she continues to create heated confrontations with the people whom she loves and needs.
Jerry immerses himself in his computer programming company, refusing to participate in decision-making regarding their marriage, their lifestyle, and the maintenance of their house. Luci refuses to help Sara.
