Entertaining, but lacking that professional touch.......2007-06-27

I liked this series and burned through it in about 5 days, the author has a knack for moving things along quickly which I really enjoyed and find lacking in a lot of other authors. I give it 2.5 stars but rounded up because of the entertaining value of the book. The reason I write this review is because I found few reviews on this book that actually told me what I was getting into, so hopefully you can get a bit from these points.

Pros:
-Very unique ideas in this novel, the concept of the Harshini and the demons, and how God's worked especially, were very entertaining, and sparked some actual real world thought about the nature of religion and God. The way she included dragons was interesting as well. I liked how they were melds and not "real," but the author never really told us how they got the idea of dragons in the first place, so they didn't really fit the story.
-As mentioned above, the book is not lacking action and it moves quickly, the story is intriguing and keeps your attention. I would say that I only found my attention falling about 3-4 times in each book of the series.

Cons
-Many people on here acclaim her character development but I never really saw it. Their depth really wasn't there. For example, Tarja, hes a defender, believes what is right and wrong, and does that exclusively and by almost any means. You never really get a feel for him. The author treats the main characters almost as literary tools at times which tended to annoy me.
-The way events happen in the book rarely have much to do with the characters actually being smart, and more with luck, or a God coming in to help. The blatant use of a Deus Ex Machina in the form of one of the Gods OVER AND OVER again really starts to grate on you.
-Predictability is a major issue, the author leaves "hints" of the futures that end up coming across as beacons for what will happen. A good example is when Adrina is kidnapped. Right before hand, Damin mentions that he feels something important was unsaid, but then to add more insult to the readers intelligence, Adrina thinks something to the extent of "I'll tell him about the baby and blah blah as soon as I see him next" Or something to that extent. Its not hard for the reader to figure out, hmm, I think just maybe, she might be STOPPED from going through with her simple plan that she would not even need to mention in the first place unless something were going to stop her.
-The Author is obsessed with torture. In some form or another, there is someone constantly being administered pain throughout the whole novel. The amount of times that the main characters are captured and then inevitably rescued by something that doesn't make sense at all, but which is proceeded by a large amount of pain or torture happens almost too many times to count. The author simply loves administering pain, but while it may be RARELY entertaining it ends up doing really nothing. The author has no knack for describing torture, I was simply annoyed by it, I never felt the characters' pain. Even after R'shiel was raped (in the first book), she doesn't show much change in character and it is simply used so that the reader will hate Loclon more. Its a pity that the author obviously has never known a rape victim, they tend to be quite different after the fact. Even if you like books where the characters go through plenty of hardship and pain to get their goal, this author doesnt even do it well.
-The last chapter (no spoilers) easily proves that the author has no concept of personal growth and leaves a lingering taste in your mouth that the main female character isnt really much more grown up then she was in the first book, despite being raped, beaten, humiliated, had a terrible childhood, killed a god, killed people, lost loved ones, started a rebellion, had her brother pretty much feel total apathy for her in the end, have no purpose, etc. I'm sorry, these books just didnt seem to recieve the amount of time they should have deserved.

There are a few other things, but other then a lot of editing errors (sceptical=skeptical?) that covers the main things you should know before purchase. Don't let this scare you off from the series though, its quite entertaining and I really enjoyed reading it. Just know that if you just finished a very well written book, you may be disappointed in that aspect with this one.

**Warning to those who prefer happy endings.......2007-06-10

This is a tragically bittersweet story. I absolutely hated what the author did to the main character. She doesn't get the guy, she doesn't get a "place in the world", nada. If you prefer stories with a happy ending, this is not for you. If that isn't so necessary, then this book might be for you. The characters are fleshed out and the story line is engaging.

Jennifer Fallon ends this trilogy with a HUGE bang! I can't wait to continue with the rest of the Hythrun Chronicles.

Excellent read, extremely hard to put down, leaves you wanting to start the next book immeadiately!

Ms. Fallon needs to keep writing! Her characters continue on like the great charachters of Ludlum or Clancy!

The series was very good, the entire story was terrific, but the ending was so simplistic you find yourself wondering "is Ms. Fallon serious?" That being said, the series was enjoyable.

This story is the sequel to Offutt's Conan and the Sorcerer. Were I liked Conan and the Sorcerer, I did not like Conan the Mercenary. The book had a good plot, a baron making himself younger to marry a queen and take over her lands, and a good cast of characters. Other than that, the story is a bore. Not much action, not much reading, not much of a conclusion. Conan wearing a fake beard and and a robe fooling everyone? I didn't believe it, and that was a main part of the conclusion of the story. Not worth reading....ERIC

The worst Conan tale I've yet read..........2000-10-07

Conan the Mercenary, the sequel to Offutt's Conan and the Sorceror, is the worst Conan story I've yet read. The illustrations in the "illustrated novel" are quite horrible, and the text is big, which makes for a short story, essentially, not a book. Virtually nothing of note happens in this whole book, except for the fact that Conan gets his soul back. The action scenes are short and pointless, Conan's whole attitude and demeanor seems nothing like Conan, and overall this book was a waste of the time it took me to find a copy.

I certainly agree with the favorable review above. Having read Becker's work at Vanderbilt during my undergraduate years, I pulled it out the other day and traveled its pages with my underlining of 40 years ago. It is still the best work I have ever read that points to the fundamental thinkers that changed the world by sparking the 18th century revolutionary notion of the devine rights of mankind, the notion of societial freedom as the basis for productive and moral living and the notion, which is ultimately correct, that governments are evil at their very core and, as such, should be minimially powered and minimally intrusive upon citizens. The work outlines the philosophic roots of the thinking of the founders of the United States of America and the since evolved thinking of the governments of England and France. It was by these viens of thinking that the notions of representative government by election of the populace, inalienable rights, the notion of "human rights" and "civil rights" themselves were born. I am at a loss to understand how any right thinking individual could see the work as otherwise motivated--however many in our world, communities, and especially in our academic ivory towers of today have lost reason and faith in simple truth in favor of caretaker world societies and rank sensualism and materialism. They run from the notion that our rights have origin in a heavenly charter that comes from a supreme being. It is that frightened character that we so often see today snarling out of bitter university perpetuants who see life and society as unjust and unfair because their "genius" is not appreciated and awarded laurels by the whole of our society. We had these bitter little minds in schools that I attended 50 years ago, and they are still with us--and flourishing. Think for yourself--read this book. It will give you insight that you may not find elsewhere. ----JCH

Understanding the French Enlightenment Philosophers.......2001-01-15

Carl Becker's work is a classic in the field whether or not one agrees with his thesis. He contends that the French Enlightenment thinkers tried unsuccessfully to distance themselves from the religious mileaux from which they came. Looking back from a vantage point nearly 150 years later, it is clear that while their ideas were advanced, the "utopia" they sought to establish was closer to the thinkers of the Reformation period 300 years earlier than to thinkers of the latter 19th and early 20th centuries. Any serious student of this period should at least scan this author's work as all subsequent scholarship has had to stake a stand for or against his position - thus to understand scholarship in the past 20 years - read this book.

A Must Read for Everyone Interested in that Period, and Ours.......2000-06-10

I was prompted to write this review to give some balance to what a previous review stated. I encountered this book, for the first time, as an undergraduate in a history course. I was forever grateful to the professor for requiring its reading, and grateful to the author for his insightful and important work. I think this book should be mandatory reading in any history course emcompassing the period, and any course that looks to understand the genesis of the ideologies that permeate our period. I think the previous reviewer was very incorrect in her understanding of the issues and facts brought out by the book. I think the professor was serving his class, and profession, well by requiring the book. The book gives indispensable insights into the mind, and characters of the period. The thinking of that period still heavily influences contemporary American, European, and now global, political and social thought. Most readers will be very gratified having read the book, to see where their own thinking has been influenced and formed. The book is both scholarly and readable. There are great insights made that should not me be missed.

Loss of faith leads to boring book.......2000-04-27

Carl Becker once unknown to me became the bane of an entire class of students as we explored in horrifying depth how Becker writes about the 18th and 19th centuries. In this book you are subjected to a historian who tries to catalogue philosophy and the philosophers of the 18th century in a poor blend of factual history and intepreted philosophy. The book is laced with so much cynicism that it becomes hard to scry which sections Becker stands behind and which he pokes fun at. After the unfortunate ordeal of reading this book you will see that Becker had a loss of faith at some point in his life and feels that everything around him is now meaningless, therefore he turns to the past to seek new meaning and redemption of his now useless life. What we find instead is a convoluted text which seems to be hailed as wonderful by religious zealots for its admonishments of science, philosophy, and history as empty in the grand scheme of the world. He contradicts himself so often that only after you pore over his text can you even decide what he supports. My opinion: skip the book and bash your head into the wall. You will get about as much satisfaction.

Great, easy, inexpensive recipes.......2005-04-26

I collect cookbooks, and I keep coming back to this one over and over again. I have been amazed with how EVERY recipe I try is easily prepared in less than 30 minutes and turns out delicious. Most of her recipes are easily converted to vegan by leaving out the cheese. I keep buying copies to give to friends, and then they tell me that they have bought copies to give to their friends. I have brought the White Beans and Sage dish to several potlucks and it's been the hit of the party. I hope Ms. Fritschner comes out with another book.

Quick, Easy, Healthy Vegetarian Recipe Book.......2003-08-20

Originally purchased this book to find recipe ideas for my teenage daughter who has adopted a vegetarian lifestyle. The book is easy to read and the recipes are not complicated. While reading it, I felt as if a friend had jotted down the recipes.
I took the book with me on vacation and the relative that I was visiting loved it, so I ended up leaving it for her. Now I will be ordering another for myself and another copy for a gift.

I use this book ALL the time!.......2003-05-09

I had been a vegetarian for a couple of years before I found this cookbook and boy, did it change the way I cook! I had been mostly relying on a couple of basic beans and rice type dishes and adapting my meat-based recipes. This book opened up a whole new world of possibilities. I use the recipes in it at least 5 days a week. There are plenty of them from different categories (grains, potatoes, pasta, etc.) so my family doesn't get bored (and I have 2 little children under 6). We all love the food prepared using these recipes. It's also given me some inspiration for coming up with dishes of my own. One of my favorite things about this book is the fact that Ms. Frischner makes suggestions about what to serve with each dish and often variations on the recipe or what to do with leftovers. This is a must have for EVERY kitchen whether you're vegetarian or not!

Learn how to cook!.......2001-07-15

My mother gave me this book a year ago, when I left for my second year of college, and I didn't use it once. At the beginning of this summer, I promised myself that I would learn how to cook, since I will be cooking for myself at school this year. For the last month and a half, my grandma and I have teamed up every day to make a different, but always very tasty meal from this book. It's totally fun! At the beginning of the weak I check out the recipes I want to try, buy the ingredients, and I'm ready to cook after a day at work. One of the greatest things about these recipes is that the instructions are very thorough, which makes it hard to screw up. I made my first cake from scratch, and it turned out perfectly. Needless to say, I am very happy and am proud to say that I finally have some of the basic, but very necessary, skills of cooking down pat.

Great collage art, wonderful cofee table book.......2001-07-12

This is a gorgeous coffee table book. I am mostly a rubber stamper and paper artist, and though I don't do much photography per se, I still love this book. It features a lot of collage art and ideas I know I can incorporate into my own designs.

The book is broken into four sections including transformed, constructed, extended and digital images. Each section features the work of 4 or 5 different artists. Each artist was interviewed, explaining their techniques and thoughts on their artwork. Four different full-page examples of each artist's work follows, with captions giving information on title, size and techniques used. There is also a gallery featuring examples of seven other artists' work.

Because I like to work with computer graphics I especially enjoyed the digital section. The still life with people in a soap bubble by Olivia Parker is really awesome. I love John Reuter's tile effect Polaroid transfers with nudes of as well. The winged pig of Maggie Taylor is another favorite.

A handy glossary and index are included as well as a directory of artists with addresses. With such a variety of techniques and approaches to art this book is truly inspirational.

Enhanced Photography is not just for Photographers.......1999-11-29

I am a painter. I have recently started making art using the computer.The computer is simply just another tool. I stumbled upon this book and found it to be very inspiring. The artists use a variety of photographic, digital and mixed media techniques to achieve a work of art that is unique and beyond the process. There are excellant representations of the works and some very good explanations of the process for achieving the final results. I reccomend this book to mixed media artists, painters, photographers, and digital artists.

An excellent book for those in search of new approaches.......1999-04-19

This is an excellent book for those interested in photographic work that goes beyond the straight print. It essentially represents a collection of work by a dozen or so artists who use photography as a starting point in the creation of their art. Their is some information on the processes the artisits employ but it is by no means a technical manual. If you are looking for inspiration this is an excellent place to start.

The quality of the reproductions are excellent as is the text which ecompanies each artist's portfolio.

A well written- beautifully photographed book........2006-06-12

I love Scandinavian architecture and have read every book I can find on the subject. As does this book, the best of them have excellent photography. Scandinavian Country also has excellent writing. It is a history of each Scandinavian countries decorating style. The author devotes a section of the book to each of the four Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland) decorating styles.

For example the author tells how the Finnish have a very simple, rustic decorating style, while the Swedish have a much more ornate style. The Fins like secluded living. The Norwegians are excellent wookworkers, which they use to advantage in all of houselhold funishings and kitchen utensils. Of all the Scandinavian countries Norway has been the most resistant to changing their traditional decorating style. Denmark gives us Danish modern furniture, which I love. Danish modern features natural fabrics and woods, eloquent yet simple design and practicality, which make it a standout. Our Danish modern dining room table has the extension boards built right into it. Leave it to the Scandinavians to think of this.

The Charcoal, Sanguine Crayon and Chalk (CSC for short) is a somewhat difficult medium to find learning material on. Most books on pastel or painting mention "redchalk" or "sanguine" merely in passing as a sketching tool. Books on drawing hardly mention it at all. In this respect, this little book is almost unique in that it treats redchalk (drawing with black, sanguine and white chalks) as a subject in its own.

The book is essentially divided in two, where the first part deals with the media and tools needed for working with chalks. The text is some 90 pages long, and the first 25 or so pages are spent on tools, chalks, papers, blending, perspective, sketching etc. Most subjects are treated on two pages with huge pictures and a few lines of text. Of course, no one will learn, say, perspective or scetching from such breaf treatises alone, so the very beginner may want to look elsewhere to get some basic concepts and skills in place.

The last part of the book is devoted to "practical exercises". The exercises are very nice in that they suggest how the painting evolves through the various stages. My previous experince is with pencils and drawing, so I was quite happy to see that the paintings here look quite "bleak" through most of the work; only after the last few finishing touches does the portraits "spring to life". That's the kind of demostrattion that is most valuable for preserving inspiration in an would-be autodidact like myself.

Most of the emphasis on CSC is presented from the painter's point of view. The basic techniques are based on various ways of handling the chalk bars with the objective of making surfaces of color on the paper. No matter if one uses cross hatching or side strokes, once the color is on the paper it is blended with a stump, cloth or brush. The demonstrations clearly show that such techniques can produce stunning results, but I would like to see more of the "drawing" techniques, i.e. lines and cross hatching left in place in the finished work. Painters appear to regard CSC as a fast and efficient tool for preliminary sketches, a tool for some sort of "limited painting". To me, CSC is a form of "extended drawing" that lets me do things and exploit effects the pencil alone does not provide. Unfortunately, this little book does not treat the "drawing aspects" of CSC.

All in all, this book provides great insporation as well as quite a few hints and suggestions about techniques and tricks. Although it leaves a bit to be desired, both on emphasis and in depth of coverage, and thus could be punished quite severely in terms of stars, the important point is that this book is actually available, providing suggestions, tricks and inspiration for trying out Charcoal, Sangune Crayon and Chalk.

I ordered this book and find out that it is the volume two. Obviously I only got the second half of Paul's songs. I don't understand why they didn't indicate that on the site. I guess probably no one knows anyway. The gentleman that wrote the previous comment didn't mention that as well... what went wrong?? Now I have no idea how to get the first half of the book set... Can someone help??

This songbook covers all the songs from beginning of Paul Simon's work with Art Garfunkel thru Still Crazy After All These Years. Well at least my version which might be an older version. None the less, the music is fairly accurate and the lyrics are situated with the music for the vocalists complete benefit. Paul Simon is indeed a talented song-writer as he writes music in many keys and uses many complex chord progressions.
