Judy Budnitz's debut novel, If I Told You Once, introduces us to Ilana, a peasant girl living sometime at the beginning of the 20th century, in an unnamed European town so gray that "the color of an egg yolk is something of a miracle." This is a place as timeless and vivid as fairy tales, with figures from Russian folklore cast against real-world horrors like rape, cannibalism, and genocide.
Not to say that all is gloomy in Budnitz's world. That's certainly not the case for Ilana, who is inspired to escape her environs for America, the only place with an actual name in the whole book. Here, Ilana's voyage turns into an immigrant's story of poverty, love, and loss. Budnitz also abandons much of the magical realism that fuels her tale's first 100 pages. What replaces the nonstop parade of wonders is a narrative device--suddenly the story is told from the point of view of Ilana's daughter, Sashie; then by Sashie's daughter, Mara; and finally by Nomie, Mara's niece.
As each woman speaks her mind on the American experience and the wounds of the heart, what emerges is a multi-generational saga that not only traverses time and geography, but sensibility as well. The novel is so well paced that the four narrators manage to keep up with the times without having to lean too heavily on cultural benchmarks like world events, slang, and references to pop songs. Budnitz's method is much more integrated, gently conveying a sense of time and tradition slipping away.
Even as Sashie and Mara dismiss the magical stories of Ilana's youth as fabrications, these tales resonate through a novel of great mythic weight. Here, nothing less than the modern world is ushered into being through the voices of girls who become lovers, lovers who become wives, and wives who become mothers. Miracles, indeed. --Ryan Boudinot
Book Description
In her utterly original novel about mothers, daughters, and love, Judy Budnitz gives the traditional folktale an electrifying twist as she follows four generations of women from an Eastern European village to the tenements of an American city.Ilana, born into a family ruled by a formidable mother, embarks on an epic journey to the New World, met along the way by evil, magic, and good fortune. The daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter who follow in her footsteps share her special powers of observation and, often, destruction. The result is a family saga unlike any other: a hilarious, heartbreaking story of family ties that bind.

Wonderful debut.......2004-09-15
I became familiar with Budnitz's short stories through The New Yorker; I fell in love with her delicate, quirky tales told with economy and precision of language. Her expertise and flair seem to lie in shorter narratives versus what she attempted with "If I Told You Once". It's a charming story of growing up in war-era Eastern Europe, coming to America, and the generations linking those experiences. Two other recent novels, "Middlesex" and "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay," share those plotlines, and, if it weren't for Budnitz's unique writing style, I wouldn't have been as satisfied.
Absolutely Stunning........2004-03-29
This story was so beautifully written. The similes and metaphors used were extremely effective, and also the fact that there were no quotation marks used. This made it seem more like a story, rather than text written on paper. The voice used for each character was very unique. Each girl a different person, but with similarities in all of them. This was the best book I have ever read in ages. Excellent page-turner.
A Wonderful Russian Folk Tale-evocative of Gogol.......2004-03-12
This novel is a wonderful take-off on old Russian Folk Tales, evoking Gogol at his wildest. It starts off well enough but improves vastly as it moves forward, and eventually resettles the tale in the New World. It is written with wit, compassion, and a wonderfully provocative prose style.
It is a shame that writers with trendy themes, or some sort of artificial hype...get thrust high into the limelight, while true writers, real writers, women and men who will no doubt write until the day they die because telling stories is just in their blood, such as Ms. Budnitz, have to be discovered in the relative shadows.
Amazing voyage.......2001-11-15
This book follows 4 women growing up in a poverty stricked environnment. Told with amazing words. Definetely a good read.
Oddly Compelling & Depressing.........2001-08-02
Don't let the cover of this book fool you;this is not a funny book, maybe in a tragio-comedic way. It is really about how the so-called "American Dream" eludes several female generations of a Russian-Jewish emmigrant family. Its not a typical "rags to riches"story like most books dealing with Jewish immigrants. In a way,I like how the writer avoided that obvious trap. It was rather sad though and could have used more humor,as it started to bring me down the more I read it. That aside, This young woman is a writer to watch,Her metaphors and observations are both unusual and memorable.
Book Description
“Between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities . . . there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars. . . . Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand . . . to tread
the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet.”
Conan is one of the greatest fictional heroes ever created–a swordsman who cuts a swath across the lands of the Hyborian Age, facing powerful sorcerers, deadly creatures, and ruthless armies of thieves and reavers.
In a meteoric career that spanned a mere twelve years before his tragic suicide, Robert E. Howard single-handedly invented the genre that came to be called sword and sorcery. Collected in this volume, profusely illustrated by artist Mark Schultz, are Howard’s first thirteen Conan stories, appearing in their original versions–in some cases for the first time in more than seventy years–and in the order Howard wrote them. Along with classics of dark fantasy like “The Tower of the Elephant” and swashbuckling adventure like “Queen of the Black Coast,” The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian contains a wealth of material never before published in the United States, including the first submitted draft of Conan’s debut, “Phoenix on the Sword,” Howard’s synopses for “The Scarlet Citadel” and “Black Colossus,” and a map of Conan’s world drawn by the author himself.
Here are timeless tales featuring Conan the raw and dangerous youth, Conan the daring thief, Conan the swashbuckling pirate, and Conan the commander of armies. Here, too, is an unparalleled glimpse into the mind of a genius whose bold storytelling style has been imitated by many, yet equaled by none.

comprehensive writings of howard?.......2007-08-26
After comparing some of my old conan novel titles with the titles found int he 3 books of this series - there are some titles that I couldn't find in this 3 series of books. It is true that Sprague de. camp might have written some of these titles (one of the books doesn't make the author of the writing quite clear int he case of "drums of tumbalku", and possibly others). But I'm not sure since one reviewer stated that there were unfinished short stories. So they could be here. anyway, here is a listing of stories that I couldn't find in these books under the same or different titles (my conan collection is not complete btw, although I do own a lot of conan books):
drums of tumbalku
the hall of the dead
rogues in the house
the hand of nergal
the bloodstained god
the snout in the dark
hawks over shem
the road of eagles
wolves beyond the border
black tears
the flame knife
As I said, my collection is not comprehensive, so there may be other books that have stories written by Robert Howard (the master), that may not be listed in these books. But then again, since I don't have these 3 books and can only go by what people write in these reviews, then I can't say for sure. Nor am I sure abou the "short stories" and what title, if any, were given to them.
I haven't read conan in years. But from my memory, I think I liked most authors. No author was able to capture the magic of Robert Howard's writings. The closest that came close was maybe Robert Jordan (he even made the same type of spelling mistakes that robert howard made). But no author was able to capture the subconscious imagery which people could identify with, which may have made these writings so famous and endearing int he first place. For example, the giant collossus banging at the door (reminiscent of the angry dad trying to knock down the door), or the demonic woman - sucking the life force out of men and turning them into stone (possibly an analogy of the emotional vampirism of some women).
The only author who I think that did not write anything that resembled Conan was "Steve Perry". The style of writing is so different from that of other Conan books, that I simply did not recognize it as Conan (women were respected, people were too friendly, Conan was a talkative person, you had tons of weird creatures all over the place like it was a smurf village, etc etc).
And yes, people may complain about Sprague de Camp, and even Lin Carter. But it has to be remembered that these were devoted fans and researchers. Without them, the Conan revival might have never happened.

Great stories; terrible artwork.......2007-07-19
Wonderful compilation marred by absolutely horrid artwork. This guy draws Conan like a Ken Doll! How I long for the old Frank Frazetta covers that used to bless the cover of Conan books.
Swords, magic and confusion........2007-06-02
Conan the Cimmerian turned out to be a much better book than I foresaw. A series of short stories, placed in the order of their creation, they really do show us a cross-slice of Conan's life. Young thief, assassin, pirate, noble and King, he was everything you could think of.
The setting is loose and wild. Robert E. Howard refused to pin anything down with too many details or solid facts which gives him a lot of room to play with. Also, while there is magic it is treated was respect and no little fear. Seems only the bad guys use it, so it can't be used by Conan to get out of problems and traps. He has to use his brains and his brawn. Fully illustrated and with tons of extras in the forms of maps and material never before published, this is a great find.
Great Role-Playing prep for the Conan MMOG.......2007-05-20
If you plan on playing the massively multiplayer Conan game and you don't know much about the setting which ranges from jungles to plains to mountains to seas, or the pantheon of gods and the cults that worship them, or the diverse political associations of the secondary characters, or what the original Conan was really like, then this is an outstanding introduction to the rich, compelling fantasy world and the complex hero who adventured in it.
For example I was surprised to learn of all the different 'careers' that Conan had including king, mercenary, thief, and even pirate.
Howard's storytelling style is great and, like the quests in the game, the stories themselves vary, from large scale strategic battles to tales of supernatural intrigue where Conan is on his own.
If you want to get a feel for the 'backstory' of the game world and have a richer deeper gameplay experience, I highly recommend this book.

Where has Vinge been all my life!.......2007-05-31
This is the good stuff. This guy is to me most reminiscent of Clarke, and that is about the highest praise I can give a science fiction writer. I have no idea about the possibility of "realtime" or any of his other ideas, but like Clarke, he has enough of a math and science background to flesh them out logically and realistically. And better yet, the characters are plausible and not weakly portrayed, the good guys are not perfect or always right, and the bad guys are not %100 evil, but also have compassion - mostly. And refreshingly, Vinge's grasp of politics, society, and economics is far more contemporary and realistic than that of most sci-fi writers. This pair of novels, or rather two-volume set IMO, is exciting, challenging, and also a real page-turner. Five stars.
Best introduction to the Singularity you'll ever get.......2006-02-07
Looking over what some of these reviewers wrote, I'm wondering, "What color is the sky of their planet of origin?" Sure, it's science fiction, but Vinge is writing about something that, given the current rate of Moore's Law, is going to hit us in less than two decades.
Vernor Vinge is a former computer science professor at San Diego State University, and the whole point of his book is to introduce the singularity (if you miss it, it's in his one-page afterward).
Yes, Across Realtime is a great story - one of the best I've ever read. But it's the ideas that make great science fiction, and Vinge will be known for his big idea long after the Sun flames out into a burnt-out cinder. Check out his presentation at the VISION-21 Symposium sponsored by NASA, especially his 2003 comments on it. (www-rohan.sdsu.edu/faculty/vinge/misc/WER2.html)
best thing I've ever read.......2005-10-16
Bar none the best fiction I have ever laid eyes on. Unless you count Calvin and Hobbes. The best book comprised of only words then. And the only thing more outrageous than the fact that the year "The Peace War" was published, it had its Hugo award STOLEN away by the inferior (yet undeniably more popular) "Ender's Game" by Card, is the fact that "Marooned In Realtime", the second volume of this book, which somehow held up to the unimaginibly high standard of "The Peace War", had the Hugo that rightfully belonged to it stolen away by the VASTLY inferior sequel to "Ender's Game", "Speaker For The Dead", by the same stinker. Oh well. It just goes to show how little the Hugo people know what they're doing. (Their winning choices for short stories are even more ridiculous. For instance, one in particular where the author got EVERYTHING so wrong, even the most basic concepts, it was hard for me to even stand to read, such as the fact that tidal force is proportional to the inverse cube of the distance, so if you approached a sufficiently massive object, you wouldn't feel it until the instant before you were blasted to bits. And of course none of the story's characters, advanced space travelers mind you, had foreseen that this massive object would have a deadly tidal force and were all taken off guard.)
That said, if you give this book a CHANCE, I think you will find it the most compelling, fascinating story you have ever read. Unless you have read things I have not. Which is more than likely. The premise: what would happen if a group of people got ahold of the ULTIMATE weapon? A weapon so strange that no one could possibly have expected its invention, yet so powerful that it made nuclear weapons obsolete, and a few people controlling it could conquer the world? That's The Peace War. The long-term effects of this technology, and long term trends of human technological development in general are what fuel the second book, "Marooned in Realtime". Interesting social analysis, and I think a very likely interpretation of the nature and fate of intelligent life in the universe. Prepare for the ultimate showdown, the ultimate fight for freedom, perhaps even the ultimate battle between good and evil, because the bad guys conquering the world is only the beginning of the story.
hmm...bobble me to the end of this story please!.......2005-08-26
Well, there are a couple of good ideas knocking about in here.
But the story is often very convulted and some of the characters
lack development. Its interesting in parts but at times its annoying having to keep track of the various characters and events. If a book is good then this event tracking should take care of itself. But when the story covers geological time frames its a little bit messy.
I wouldnt agree with a lot of the reviewers who claim this is far better than many other sci-fi novels - I found it an interesting read in parts but tedious in other ways.
I didnt share the significance of finding out who marthas killer was especially when there were other things of much more significance happening in the novel and to be honest finding out which of the high/low techs killed her was a bit of a rush to an anti-climax.
Theres a old psychological trait that perhaps people writing review will do so for books they find more favourable than others so its questionable whether you get a true reflection of public opionion about a book..so I'm not too sure how much my views are out of step with the general enthusasism here for these novels. I suppose you'll have to read it to make up your own mind...but remember there is an finite amount of books any human will read so choose well !
Worth It Just for "Marooned in Realtime".......2004-04-19
You know by now that this book comprises the novel "Peace War", the short story "The Ungoverned" and the novel "Marooned in Realtime." The first two stories are interesting, but probably not something that I would rush out to recommend to friends.
However, "Marooned in Realtime" is an amazing joyride! If you like the big ideas, big consequences, big time-spans, all carried out their logical conclusions, this is the story for you! Vinge clearly shows his skills in writing stories with a "sense of awe and wonder" that he later showcases in his "A Fire Upon the Deep" and "A Deepness in the Sky" novels. If you liked those two novels, you'll most probably like "Marooned in Realtime".
One note:
If you wonder if you "need" to read the "Peace War" and "The Ungoverened" in order to fully enjoy "Marooned in Realtime," there are a couple of concepts and characters that are introduced that are important to fully understanding "Marooned in Realtime." In fact, the conclusion to the "murder mystery" in "Marooned" hinges on your being familiar with a certain character introduced in the earlier stories. I was surpirsed by this since I was hoping that "Marooned" could stand alone by itself without too much backreferencing.

An excellent tool for students of New Testament Greek to maintain the skills taught in first-year Greek.
Customer Reviews:
Useful Exercise Material.......2007-09-16
This is a pretty good workbook for its stated purpose. I worked through Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek on my own, and when I was done I found this book to be at a very good level for practicing and maintaining what I had learned.
Probably the chief drawback to this workbook is that it encourages the practice of thinking of the Greek text in terms of Englishing the text rather than actually trying to understand the Greek directly. As I worked through it, after producing my "translation" I tried to go back and re-read the Greek to see how much I could understand without thinking it in English.
There were a few (but just a few) cases where unfamiliar vocabulary wasn't defined as described in the preface. There were more than a few cases where verbs were presented for parsing in completely unfamiliar forms, so that rather than practicing parsing one is actually learning a new principle part. That's useful, obviously, but a little frustrating. I would have rather had a footnote hinting at the lexical form.
My biggest complaint about this book is that the binding on my copy was terrible. The pages kept falling out. By the time I finished, the last page was the only page still attached to the cover.
Excellent Study Aid.......2001-04-25
This book is perfect for any student (Highschool or College) who wishes to preserve what was learned during the school year. It contains 12 weeks worth of daily reading passages and parsing questions. The length of the reading passages only require about 15-20 minutes a day and the 3 parsing questions are perfect for paradigm maintenance. Each chapter has a small vocabulary list which is easy to memorize in a small amount of time. Also, students can check the back of the book which contains full English translations of the daily passages. It would be helpful if it had a comprehensive Vocabulary list in the back but, if a word is forgotten, it is not that difficult to look through the lesson lists. Overall, this book is a terrific collection of daily 20 minute studies.

Book Description
A groundbreaking study of the development of mechanical and metal cased pencils in the nineteenth century. Illustrated with over 700 photographs, the book provides examples of the extraordinary variety of propelling pencils that were created between 1800 and 1920. Readers will be struck by the ingenuity of the inventors and creators of this (until now) forgotten form of decorative art. From metal cased pencils that are elegantly practical, to "magic" pencils that are more whimsical than functional, this book follows the progress of the mechanical pencil as it evolves from a usable tool to something more akin to jewelry. This history of mechanical pencils also includes definitions of terms, descriptions of various mechanisms, ornamentation and surface decoration, and the multitude of combinations created by nineteenth century pencil-case makers. Value ranges are also included.

Tatting Doilies and Edgings .......2007-03-11
My wife enjoyed the book greatly. She has made several of the patterns from the book.
a collection of reprints.......2007-01-17
This is a collection of reprinted patterns from the 20's to 40's, focusing mostly on doilies, table settings, and armchair doilies. It does have some edgings and hankerchief patterns, but doesn't have the patterns for purses, camisoles, baby caps and odd accessories you see in a lot of reprints from the 20's & 30's. There are a few patterns that will lie flat a lot easier if worked with 2 shuttles instead of a ball & shuttle, but it's not required on most. I tatted a few of the doilies and they turned out nicely. If you like the 'traditional' tatting patterns and styles, this is a very nice book.
Good for making things for your home . . ........2000-11-18
this book includes some very pretty doilies (I tatted Whip Cream Frill in white and it was beautiful) along with other doily-like patterns that are meant for use around the house. It's obvious from some of the designs that they're from another time period (1920s-1940s); there's not much call for 'luncheon sets' or chair antimacassars anymore, but those older patterns can be adapted into placemats or doilies. No visual patterns, and all the designs are written in short form, but none of the patterns are incredibly difficult. The edging patterns are nice but nothing out of the ordinary.
Good, cheap source of patterns.......2000-08-30
These patterns are all culled from thread company tatting leaflets from the 1930s and 40s. Many are beautiful, a few are hideous, but for this price you can't beat it. Note that Rita Weiss is NOT the author or the editor, one assumes she selected the patterns and wrote the very short introduction. All the patterns remain as they were originally printed, errors intact.
Great deal, nice patterns.......1999-06-24
This book has a wide variety of patterns which are not simply "reruns" of the same old designs. It is well worth to buy, but not spectacular.

Customer Reviews:
Beautifully illustrated, targeted to Web artists & designers.......2000-12-29
This is a beautifully illustrated text packed full of illustrations and design descriptions for 14 case studies of taking traditional print media to the WEB, "brick and mortar" to "click and mortar". Each project focuses on how designers overcame the problems involved in translating printer material to the WEB. The text is very heavy into full color illustrations and graphics to illustrate both the original print projects and the final WEB implementation. This text will benefit those involved in WEB design from a layout and final product perspective, and is targeted more towards graphic artists than WEB programmers. It is not a text for learning Web programming (e.g. HTML, JavaScript, XML, etc.). The text lists the URLs for the projects, and the companion CD provides links to 200 related design sites.
