Absolutely Incredible.......2005-01-06
Simon Bisley is rivaled only by greats such as Alex Ross and H. R. Giger in terms of painterly ability. This undertaking is absolutely stunning. Most of the book is drawings, which we rarely seem to see, so seeing the process is wonderful. The imagery Bisley depicts in this book is simply awesome. Depicting several Biblical scenes Bisley does what he does best. The raw emotion exerted and depicted in these works is breathtaking at times. The few color works serve to only enhance the power exhibited in his drawings. There is some nudity in the book so be cautious if buying for a classroom, and some may find the material offensive due to religious content and or interpretations Bisley has created. If you like Simon Bisley this is an absolutely MUST HAVE.

Fresh and original plot idea!.......2006-04-20
This is my favorite of Linda's three Midnight books. I enjoyed Dylan in the first two, the cover is too hot for words, and the premise is so freakin original. Alexandra and Dylan are divorced and it was ugly. Dylan is surprised one day to get a call from the hospital asking him to come get his wife. She was mugged and ends up with amnesia, forgetting the little detail that they aren't married any longer. Someone is stalking her so he stays close to protect her. Very refreshing story.

Excellent classic Zelazny.......2007-01-03
A fine mixture of mythology and science fiction.
Humans have wrecked the Earth in a nuclear war and are now dependent on the patronizing alien Vegans. Our hero Konstantin is the director of Earth's archaeological service and guides an important Vegan and a motley set of humans. Except he is centuries older than he appears, is possibly immortal, was a leader of an anti-Vegan terrorist group, etc. Oh, and he was born on Christmas day and is thus a mythical Kallikanzaros and he has the mismatched eyes, limp, special powers, and superhuman strength to match that role.
You need to suspend disbelief to accept the mixture of unlikely mythical elements. But once there, it is a lot of fun. Zelazny writes really well and succeeds in making Konstantin unlikely yet plausible.
Gods and demi-gods.......2006-11-05
One of Zelazny's finest, this tale continues the author's fascination with mythology and merges it with his Mike Hammer toughness and New Age Haiku style of writing.
Vulcanologist.......2006-05-14
.....I read Lord Of Light as my first Zelazny read and picked up This Immortal aferwards. I loved each book and am eager to explore his other works. This is a cool quick read.
.....I differ on one point with the reviewers below as to the main characters origins. While many of the hints are toward a satyr, him being called a "forger" by the Vegan he chooses to protect and due to a few other comments, is he not possibly Vulcan of Roman Mythology (Hepaestus in Greek Mythology).... He was the god of fire and volcanoes, and the manufacturer of art, arms, iron, and armor for gods and heroes. He was born weak (later fairly strong) and crippled and was considered quite ugly...... Just a thought.
Classic 60s New Age novel.......2005-08-07
This was one of Zelazny's first full-length novels, and it already shows him as a confident author in complete control of his materials, and with many of the themes that were to inform his novels during the rest of his very productive career. Zelazny went on to write 50 books, including novels, collections of short stories, and even several collections of poetry, but many of the elements he became so well known for are present here.
The protagonist is more than human in many ways--he doesn't age--but with a self-effacing, wise-cracking, self-deprecating sort of humor, a character type that was to become his favorite. The "Methuselah" trait added a surrealistic quality to an otherwise somewhat cynical, quite reality-grounded, character. Zelazny had the ability to paint quick, incisive but also subtle protraits of his characters in a few telling lines, but also devotes entire paragraphs to describing their psychology and appearance too. And his interest in myth, legends, and ancient history is shown in the many references to ancient Greece, the protagonist being Greek too.
That having been said, I had one minor quip, which is that except for the characters of Hasan the assassin and Conrad, most of the other main characters weren't really drawn that well. You didn't really get to know them and they remained obscure all through the book. I found this odd considering Zelazy is usually pretty good with characterization.
Similar to his book, Damnation Alley, Earth is a post-nuclear wasteland, a formerly vibrant but now devastated civilization, which the more advanced and peaceful Venusians find fascinating as a case study in primitive intelligence and culture gone wrong. Some of them even want to turn the earth into sort of a freakish post-Apocalyptic resort, such as the visiting Venusian or Vegan scholar in the story.
In addition to the above elements, add in a few more imaginative characters, such as a deadly Arabic hired assassin who prides himself on his professionalism and still has his scruples; robot "golems" that are used as martial arts training partners; mutated, 40-foot long, half-snake, half-crocodile creatures; giant bats; massive earthquakes that sink several islands in the Aegean; and a couple of secret terrorist plots and political intrigues, and you have a pretty good idea of the story. Obviously, Zelazny had fun creating and thinking up all these ideas for the book and it shows, as this early novel still remains one of his finest works, and it was certainly deserving of the Hugo that it won.
Without Prometheus Unbound.......2005-06-20
Without having read Prometheus Unbound or knowing as much Greek mythology as Zelazny, this book largely flew over my head.
Often miracles would happen to get the characters out of trouble (on at least two occasions I remember off the top of my head). To make matters worse, a lot of the dialog is like machine guns firing, where one person says a single word, the other character replies with one word, and then the first person says another single word. Dialog will go on for pages without any dialog tags. Besides the protagonist, the characters are largely superficial. The love story was not impressive by any means.
The only thing I found somewhat satisfying was when I learned what the Vegan's really wanted.
So, if you are a master of greek mythology, I heartily recommend this book. Or, if you want to learn more, pick it up. Otherwise, the book probably isn't for you.

The best english translation available.......2000-12-01
If you want a chance to experience the devotion in Anselm's prayers and meditations (as it was meant to be experienced), then this is the one (English) translation that you must have (assuming you can't read the original Latin). This book allows one to feel the essence of worship that is necessary in understanding Anselm's thought. I've read some other translations (especially those of the Proslogion), and only this edition can claim to be the prayer that Anselm meant them to be. The brief introduction featured in the book is also worth reading, although it doesn't give all the details, it does allow one to understand why Anselm has been misunderstood by so many, and it gives one a chance to understand him better.

A Big Fan!.......2001-11-11
This is an unbelievable book!! The recipes are so easy and always turn out perfectly. They are also so interesting - taking something simple and making them incredible! The brisket and tenderloin are big favorites in my house. I have been a big fan of Abby Mandel's for years. Nothing in this book is difficult - it makes cooking so much fun!!!
Obviously not a Midwestern Native.......2001-08-24
As a Midwesterner from 9 months of age, (and I've been around more than the author's 35 years living in the Chicago area) I was really excited when I saw this title. Then I started reading the Introduction. It's obvious this author is not a native Midwesterner. She states in this introduction "Consider this midday winter meal of 125 years ago, a time of demanding physical labor: raw oysters, roast chicken, mashed potatoes, stewed sweet potatoes, macaroni, turnips, squash or pumpkin pie, eggless plum pudding, plum preserves, assorted fruit, and coffee." Hmmm, I don't know any Midwest farmer who would have had access to raw oysters for a midday meal. A special meal maybe, but NOT a typical midday meal. And - isn't Cod a salt water fish? It just sort of spoiled my faith in the recipies. Plus she had recipies for lamb. Yikes, the only reason I grew up having lamb was my parents were from the New York City area. None of my friends had it. It was very rare that my mother could find it in the stores. (And even then it was more likely to be mutton, which is why most Midwesterners don't like lamb.)
Wonderful recipes that are extremely well tested........1999-05-09
This is my favorite cookbook (and I have hundreds) and one I have often given as a gift. All the recipients agree, that the book is loaded with terrific recipes that work every time. Her previous book, "More Taste Than Time" (Simon and Shuster, 1988) is also a winner, but unfortunately out of print. If you can find it-buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Slim, Colorful Volume About the Guns that Won The West.......2006-01-30
The curator of the firearms museum of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, David Kennedy, has written a masterful but all too slim volume about the guns that won the Wild West.
Included here are the Sharps Buffalo Rifle used in great effect in the tragic decimation of the buffalo, the LeMat Revolver and Carbine, used in varying degrees of success by the Confederacy during the Civil War, the 1866 "Trapdoor" Springfields, which were used by Custer's men at the Big Horn, the "pepperbox" pistols (so small they could fit in a pepperbox...and sometimes so dangerous even to the user, as all four shots could go off even if the owner intended on firing only one), the oh-so-familiar Colt Navy Revolvers - used mainly by Army Forces! (I have a replica of Confederate 1860 Navy Colt in my possession), and so many more.
Kennedy has also opined that Custer and his men were done in by sheer numbers of Sioux and Cheyenne, not that the single-shot weapons used by the 7th Cavalry, or that the majority of Braves had repeating rifles. In fact, according to Kennedy, only 30-50% of the Sioux and Cheyenne even possessed firearms. Custer and his men were done in chiefly by the bow, the arrow, and muzzle-loading trade guns.
Kennedy also adds interesting and intriguing vignettes about the owners and users of the guns of the Wild West, from George Custer to Buffalo Bill to Gary Cooper, from Frederick Remington to Dick Cheney, the notorious - Wild Bill Hickok, John Wesley Hardin, and William "The Kid" Bonney, and the great - Annie Oakley.
My only problem is that the volume, while chock full of facts and data, and very informative trivia, is too slim - and does not enough period illustrations. Still, it is deserving of a five-star review.
Required reading for those visiting the wonderful "Guns and Gamblers" exhibition at the Desert Caballeros Museum in Wickenburg, Arizona.

Average biography, but read it for Ingeborg Pertwee's part.......2000-08-26
When I read a biography, I'm hoping for some insight into the personality of the subject. Unfortunately for me, Bernard Bale seems more interested in going through Jon Pertwee's life with emphasis on a series of amusing anecdotes.
While this may have been fine, I got stronger impressions of the author's personality than I did that of the subject. At several points, Mr Bale makes comments which are obviously his opinion on a topic, but which have little to do with Jon Pertwee. For example, saying "Probably today's society has relaxed school rules to a ridiculous level..." (p16) sufficiently annoyed me that I began to dread what other personal opinions Mr Bale would foist upon me.
I was, however, pleased I continued because there is a truly wonderful part of the book awaiting. Jon Pertwee's last wife, Ingeborg, contributes recollections of her life with her husband, which takes up a significant part of the book (p160-237 of 246 pages!) which is a delight to read. It is during this section that we get a window on Jon Pertwee the man, rather than the public figure. (I am actually a little mystified that Ingeborg Pertwee was not listed as the co-author of the book.)
If you are a fan of Jon Pertwee, this book, especially the recollections of Ingeborg Pertwee, will help put his achievements as an actor into perspective with his life. Probably best read in conjunction with Jon Pertwee's final memoir ("I am the Doctor" by Jon Pertwee and David J Howe).
My rating is essentially 2 stars for Bernard Bale's part of the book, and 4 stars for Ingeborg Pertwee's.
