Should be considered an American classic.......2007-01-11
Urrea's story is reminiscent to me of East of Eden by John Steinbeck in that it is a raw depiction of life as it could truly be for a man and how he adapts and grows as a person. This authors doesn't use fancy writing or unrealistic plot lines to draw the reader in, he simply writes from the heart and it is very evident. This is one of my favorite books that I plan on reading again soon.
INCREDIBLE!.......1999-07-14
A fast-moving plot line that draws you into its lush desert landscapes, quirky characters, greasy roadside diners, drive-ins, and general Americana. A great novel on many levels.
Buy this book!.......1998-01-25
This is simply one of the finest American novels I have ever read: fascinating, funny, wise, and beautifully crafted. Urrea's work ought to be as well-know as Kingsolver's, McCarthy's and other contemporary western writers. He's building a following over here in England simply by word of mouth, one imported copy at a time. If you're an American reader, don't miss one of the best writers you've got over there.
Book Description
L. E. Modesitt, Jr. returns to the world of Corus to continue the epic trilogy begun in Alector's Choice. It is the story of the fall of a great civilization and the tale of the Alector, Colonel Dainyl, and Captain Mykel, the Corean human with special abilities.
The world Corus has been redesigned to become the new home of a superior race from a distant world whose very life depends on drawing sustenance from the biological life force of a planet. Meanwhile, their plans are supervised by a staff of Alectors, who in effect rule the world. The Alectors alone have access to the huge flying Pteridons they have bred, and the superior weapons that underpin their psychic talents.
The time is now fast approaching for the transfer of the whole population from the old world nearly bled dry of life force to Corus. But neither the Alectors (who will be reduced in status when the real powers arrive) nor the local humans (who seem destined to become no more than cattle, though they know nothing of this) are ready. And the mysterious Ancient Ones, the true natives of Corus and assumed to have died out in eons past, still survive, and they have their own powers. The situation builds toward an explosive climax.

Derivative of all his prior writing, not necessarily a bad thing.......2007-10-08
Reading a Modesitt book is like having a really good hamburger at a restaurant. It's not gourmet food. You feel like you could make it yourself at home but it's too much trouble. You've had a dozen of them in the last year but you aren't sick of them. Sometimes they are a little tastier than others, but generally, you get what you pay for.
I feel like that with Modesitt, and that's not a criticism. I really like hamburgers.
He is so formula in his writing it's almost like you could write the plot outline just from looking at the cover picture:
Male character is up-and-coming minor officer, who climbs the ranks after being smarter and more powerful than his superiors believe, and on the way, is a little unorthodox but ultimately does nothing surprising. Along the way, you get to enjoy nice desciptions of politics, magic, or some sort of craftmaking (whether sheep shearing or wood working), and the entire novel ends in a too-quick rush of action in the last twenty pages that makes you wish the book had a little more action earlier and a little less towards the end.
That formula in mind, this book deviates little. But what makes Modesitt work, and this book in particular, is that his writing is just very....readable. I can't tell you how much I have wanted to enjoy other authors but found the writing too dense (Thomas Covenant series) or too simplistic (David Eddings comes to mind). Sometimes the writing is just bad (a lot of D&D RPG novels are like that). A really good writer can make a technical manual about editing database structure readable (I'm not saying interesting, I'm saying readable). Modesitt is a really good writer.
I won't go over the plot. Other people have. I found it interesting and fun, though hard to follow at times with the various political intrigue and the fact that the names are all so similar among the various players and their locations/interests undefined enough that it's impossible to keep track. But I still enjoyed it.
It's the middle of what's really a six book series with the first three set thousands of years after the last three. But it's a fun new world that isn't dominated by discussions of law and chaos, so I've enjoyed it.
My suggestion: If you like Modesitt there's no reason you won't like this book. If you don't like him, don't bother. If you don't know him, start with the Magic of Recluse. If you can't put that book down, jump into this new world head first.
Not his best work.......2007-07-06
I love all books by L.E. Modesitt.
However, this book is very slow.
Not much happens for the first 250pages. Just a lot of setup and slow character development. The only major action happens at the very end and the entire plot of the series is only slightly advanced.
I would still buy it because I like the series but you may be a bit dissapointed.
Cadmian's Choice.......2007-06-29
The Fifth book in Modesitt's Corean Chronicles series is a good read, if sometimes a bit tedious with detail. No one writes like Modesitt. His books always capture my interest and the moment I'm finished with one of them, I'm ready to read another. He's one of my favorite authors.
customer.......2007-06-26
The book arrived fast, in excellent condition as promised and well packaged to protect it during the shipment. I'd read the library version of the book but wanted a copy for myself as I am a Modesitt fan and like that series.
The Stalking Horse.......2007-02-11
Cadmian's Choice (2006) is the fifth Fantasy novel of the Corean Chronicles and the second in the prequel trilogy, following Alector's Choice. In the previous volume, Dainyl returns to Elcien to find that his wife is pregnant with a girl child. The next day, Dainyl arrives at headquarters only to be told that more pteridons have been lost while he was gone. Later, Dainyl briefs the Duarch of Elcien on the professed reasons for the rebellion, but both remain puzzled.
As Mykel delivers Rachyla to her father's estate, she tries once again to persuade him to rebel against the alectors. He refuses, but does accept the invitation to have his men stay on the estate overnight. When Mykel returns to Elcien, he is confirmed as Majer of the Third Cadmian Battalion.
In this novel, Colonel Herolt assigns the battalion to duty in Hyalt to suppress armed groups in the hills to the west of the town. The Third Battalion will be shipped by sea to Southgate. There the battalion will take over training of two locally recruited companies and will accompany them to Hyalt. Mykel is also charged with rebuilding the Cadmian compound outside Hyalt for the local companies.
When the Third Cadmian and the local companies arrive in Hyalt, Mykel has them camp on the site of the old compound. After talking to the local townsmen, Mykel begins to suspect that there are not any local bandits. He learns that the regional administrator has new weapons and uniformed troops to operate them. He suspects that the massacred Cadmian troops had been murdered by these uniformed alectors.
Submarshall Dainyl is sent on an inspection tour of the Eastern region. He meets Submarshall Alcyna and High Elector Brekylt and is convinced that they are plotting against Duarch Khelaryt. As Dainyl travels via the Tables, various Recorder try to kill him within the system or at his destination; everyone underestimates the strength of his shields. With all the deaths following his travels, Dainyl is getting a reputation, but the murder attempts keep coming his way.
In this story, both Mykel and Dainyl have further contacts with the Ancients. Both are told to try harder to accommodate themselves to Acorus. Dainyl is told to start drawing his power from Acorus, but he hasn't yet learned how. Mykel, of course, is already gaining power from the planet, but he discovers how to draw power locally rather than from his birthplace. Both are becoming much more powerful than their enemies believe possible.
The Ancients -- or Soarers -- do not seem to be particularly interested in either Dainyl or Mykel. They provide specific advice, but in a vague manner. Mykel seems to understand the point better than Dainyl, but then the Submarshall started with more power than Mykel.
Since Dainyl knows that Mykel is a rogue talent, at various times he considers turning in the Cadmian, but always sees reasons to protect the lander. Indeed, Majer Mykel is a good leader of men, often accomplishing things that were thought to be impossible. With all the enemies that he has acquired, Dainyl sees the value of having a talented Cadmian officer indebted to him.
This story builds momentum slowly, but erupts in open warfare in the last third of the novel. The author has a habit of starting slowly and increasing the pace until violence flares. Then he tapers down for the epilogue. He leaves plenty of unattached threads for the sequel: Soarer's Choice. Don't miss it.
Highly recommended for Modesitt fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of close combat, political intrigue and creative use of talents.

Book Description
Philosophers and religious scholars the world over have sought to answer the question of why a loving God permits evil. In these pages, Paramahansa Yogananda provides strength and solace for times of adversity by explaining the mysteries of God's lila, or divine drama. Readers will come to understand the reason for the dualistic nature of creation- God's interplay of good and evil - and receive guidance on how to rise above the most challenging circumstances.

GOD AS A BORED MOVIE PROJECTIONIST.......2006-12-16
Religious leaders are at their worst when trying to explain evil. Though I do not agree with C. S. Lewis's Christianity, I hoped that I might learn something useful from reading THE PROBLEM OF PAIN. Alvin C. Plantinga's GOD, FREEDOM, AND EVIL presented what he thought was a logical justification of why God cannot prevent evil. Though Christian readers raved at their success, I thought they were both ridiculous. Readers also praise the Yogi's book. I must belong to a different species.
The Yogi defines Self-realization as knowing ourselves as divine beings (John 10:34), and Christ-consciousness as the projected consciousness of God. I also feel to be true because this has been my experience of God. The problem with Saints and Scriptures that claim to speak God's Ultimate Truth is that mere mortals are not permitted to disagree with them. However, "God" is invariably colored by the culture and the temperament of the Saint experiencing him. Though it is de rigueur for religious liberals to maintain that all Saints agree with each other -- I once did - all the actual evidence speaks against this. The Yogi does not understand evil; without understanding evil, how can one understand "God?"
The Yogi insists that God created evil (Isaiah45:6-7) because it provides the contrast that enables us to experience good. Misery is our best friend because it starts us seeking God. If joy were ceaseless in this world we would be content and never seek another. Once we realize our true nature, we will not mind the pain. Unfortunately, only an infinitesimal number of people, including the Yogi's devotees, have ever achieved this level of enlightenment. Since evil is omnipresent, we have no choice but to learn to experience it with detachment, or perhaps go mad or commit suicide, but I do not even want to reach a state of mind where I don't mind it.
God created the world because he recognized his own Perfection so he divided himself into many souls so that we could all enjoy him. The purpose of life is to realize that we are nothing but God's hobby, a toy created so God could entertain himself. Our existence has nothing to do with God's evolution, because God is already perfect. I find it mind-boggling that anyone can find comfort in a God who entertains himself with Auschwitz, Ted Bundy, and Tay-Sachs disease, but that's just me. God strikes me as seriously narcissistic.
The Yogi takes it as a self-evident fact that the only true thing to strive for is happiness because true happiness is God. All people, even atheists and the evil, are seeking happiness, so they are actually seeking God without knowing it. If being one with God is the Only Good Thing, one has to wonder why God was not content with knowing himself instead encaging part of himself as human souls so that part of himself is ignorant of and even hates himself. When the Yogi says God is sorry we have lost sight of Him, how can he not mean that God has lost sight of Himself?
We are not "the very Consciousness out of which this Universe has been created by God;" We are the very consciousness that we are inclined to think of as "God." There is no good reason for supposing that there is a "God" external to this consciousness. Wisdom does not consist of seeking bliss; it consists of striving for greater self-awareness. "God" can only achieve Self-awareness through humanity. Most people who do evil are people guilty of the sin of self-ignorance. But some people seem to be evil by nature, and evil does not seek happiness; it seeks destruction. Evil is a flaw in consciousness itself, a seemingly autonomous archetype within the human psyche that hates existence. (I do not imagine that these ideas will be taken seriously by many people who might read this; but at least they are coherent and far more optimistic than dismissing mankind's pain as God's purposeless entertainment).
(Peter Payne, author of CAPTAIN CALIFORNIA: A YOUNG MAN'S ENCOUNTER WITH THE EVIL WITHIN HIMSELF)
An Interesting View on Evil.......2005-06-04
I am currently researching the many views re: evil - for some reason, it has become quite important to me now...
In this book, Paramahansa Yogananda discusses his view on life -which is that life is the dream of God, a play of sorts. Therefore, if we can realize that we are esentially actors in this dream, we can become detached - watching our life as if we were watching a movie on the screen.
According to Paramahansa, the goal of this dream is to bring us all back to God (of which we are a part)- and that through good as well as evil, this is accomplished.
Evil is viewed as being essential for us to be able to enjoy the good, because if everything was already perfect, we would be much less likely to realize how wonderful and joyful life can be. Basically, we need the bad to appreciate the good.
Although I agree with many of the viewpoints espoused in this book, there are some that just don't resonate with me - at least not yet. Of course, this does not mean that they aren't true, it just means that they don't "work" for me just yet. Regardless of this slight difference of opinion, I still believe that this is an excellent book on the topic of evil.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone questioning why evil exists in our world. Even if you don't agree with all of the author's viewpoints, it still offers a lot to think about.
A Beacon of Hope in the Dark.......2004-07-11
I learned much from this book. It explained how to rise above any suffering I have experienced, and brought me a lot of hope contrary to how I was raised.
This is a wonderful book of the few I recommend that will speak to your soul and teach you how to overcome adversity. An excellent read and highly beneficial for all. Most Highly Recommended!
Divine Will and the Choice of Love Peace and Forgiveness.......2004-04-14
The deeply moving words of truth from Paramahansa Yogananda show us all how God endowed us with free will, so that we may come to learn, know, feel, practice, and act with love and peace.
This little gem and treasure of a book is as great and as big as the cosmos with Divine truth, which will illuminate your mind, and speak to your soul.
It teaches us to go within, and discover our own Divine God-Self within, where we CA N prevail in peace in our world, once we each choose to individually. It is then that the world will know peace collectively.
HIGHLY Recommended to discover your own Divinity within.

A very thought-provoking, uplifting viewpoint.......2004-02-01
How refreshing to hear a level-headed, non-dogmatic exposition on an eternally "hot" topic. This yogi makes a lot more sense to my heart than ninety-nine percent of the stuff I was brought up hearing.

Creative,but not always helpful.......2006-07-16
This cookbook has some new twist that I like alot. The recipes for different protein drinks is GREAT! The dessert section has quite a few recipes that have a lot of sugar.
I know everyone has different needs and tolerances but, there need to be some type of warning when lots of sugar is used.
Great, even for the non-chef!.......2005-11-22
I have found this book to be fabulous, and I'm not really one for cooking. I've been intimidated for years about cooking "soul food", but not anymore. This book has opened up a new world of easy to follow recipes, that clearly list all of the ingredients and directions. It has taken the guess work out of "how to", and allows even the beginning cook to appear as a seasoned chef. I purchased the book after hearing rave reviews from my friends, and I'm definately glad that I did. Since having gastric bypass surgery, this book has taught me that, I don't have to give up my favorite foods, and I can even make them myself. Well done!
Great Cookbook.......2005-11-21
This is a great cookbook and very easy to follow. As a Gastric patient I have found this to be very helpful. I highly recommend it!
Great!.......2005-11-21
The recipes are simple, delicious, flavorful and great for aiding in my weightloss efforts.

Taste Great!.......2004-05-27
I've tried several of the recipes in this book and they taste great! Most (if not all) include regularly used ingredients including meats (chicken, beef, etc) and seasonings (Thyme, Oregeno, etc.) The recipes are mainly based on cans of assorted Campbell's low-fat or reduced-fat soups which can be substituted by less expensive store brand soups. They are easy to make, easy clean-up. Substitute and additional side dishes are offered, as well as nutrition facts for each recipe. AND...COLOR PHOTOS on EACH PAGE!
My only concern is the sodium content, which is known to be high in many canned goods.

Forget about your Picassos and Cézannes. What you really need to know is where the Mustard Museum is (answer: Mount Horeb, Wisconsin--displaying some 1,700 kinds of mustard) or the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices (downtown Minneapolis). Thanks to the research of Lynne Arany and Archie Hobson, the country's bizarre and obscure museums--including the Barbie Hall of Fame and the Goodyear World of Rubber collections--are collected in one magnificent, if somewhat strange, volume. It canvasses the back roads and major highways of the U.S., is organized alphabetically by state, and includes an index by category as well as an index to virtual museum Web sites. Useful for the traveler who wants an alternative to the main drag or seeks destination inspiration, Little Museums provides good perusal fodder and armchair travel as well. --Stephanie Gold
Book Description
The definitive guide to the most interesting, amusing, and surprising collections in America.
With listings that leave no source unexplored, this clever directory is the first in-depth popular guide to more than 1,000 small museums. Its listing of archives ranging from the utterly informal to the most diligently organized, labeled, and catalogued, from displays of celebrity shoes to the work of visionary artists, provides a picture of the American landscape that is rich in quirky details.
In Little Museums, you will find the listings that tourist literature does not provide, including the Barbie Hall of Fame in Palo Alto, California, the Dog Mushing Museum in Fairbanks, Alaska; the Museum of Ordinary People in Hurtsboro, Alabama; the 24Hour Church of Elvis in Portland, Arizona; and the last freak show left in America--at Coney Island's Sideshows by the Seashore. A virtual museums listing means you don't even have to leave home to visit a little museum, and a category index makes finding museums devoted to your favorite subjects even easier. Little Museums is for anyone who hates to miss a unique opportunity along the byways and urban centers of America.

Good Effort but Getting Out of Date........2004-09-27
Small museums don't last forever. So this book is getting a little out of date - however - this is a good book still. I have read it twice and still use it as a resource. I hope the author makes a new edition. If you like visiting small museums and stuff - get the book.
Cool resource for road-tripping in the U.S.!.......2001-09-30
If you enjoy discovering unusual places when you travel or you just have strange interests, then you'll appreciate this book. It's a state-by-state listing of small museums covering nearly every kind of human endeavor, including The Louis H. Sullivan Architectural Collection, The Julia C. Bullette Red Light Museum, The New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum, The Museum of Neon Art, The Titan Missile Museum, The Louis P. Klein Broom and Brush Museum, Barney Smith's Toilet Seat Art Museum, and hundreds more.
If you don't feel like driving that far, you'll be amazed at some of the unusual museums that might be in your very own neighborhood... as I was, when I discovered that there's a Cockroach Hall of Fame just a mile away from where I live.
Each museum entry includes a decription with the address, phone, directions, opening hours, and price. Phones and pricing may not be entirely up-to-date, but it's a place to start.
A great addition to any road trip!.......2001-09-24
This is a great book to take with you as you travel. Even if do not take it with you, this is certainly the book you want to refer as you plan your trip.
There are a slew of museums that sound like they would be interesting to visit. There are many museums that I have visited that were interesting.
For many years, as my husband and I have traveled, we have tried to find the small museums in each of the towns we visited. We have learned that almost every town we visit has a small museum. Unfortunately, many of these museums are not worth the time and effort. This book seems to have the cream of the crop. We know if it's listed in this book, we make the effort to see it.
A great resource for traveling on the road. Visiting small museums (and large) is an easy way to add planned breaks to your driving, stretch your legs, learn about your country, and more. This book can only enhance any trip you take.
Great concept; some information is incorrect........1999-07-23
This book is a great concept with, in general, a good execution. But, as I toured the east coast a month or so ago, some of the information in the book was incorrect. There was a mangled URL, an incorrect phone number, and passages about museums which haven't been built yet. I found this book and tried to make a vacation of it; but after being misrouted to 2 of the 5 spots by this book, I wouldn't put 100% faith in it. But I also suppose that's part of the nature of these small museums, and why we have to visit them when we can; you wait, and they're gone.
Don't Leave Home Without It!.......1998-10-20
Whether you are planning a weekend drive or a summer-long sojourn throughout the United States, take (and keep) this book with you. LITTLE MUSEUMS will allow you to see the world in a slightly different way and will give you many, many stories to tell when you get back home. No matter where you live or where you're traveling, this volume will come to be a best friend in your glove compartment. In its exhaustive evaluation of museums you couldn't even dream up if you tried, LM offers a snapshot of America that we once only imagined existed...but with LITTLE MUSEUMS, we are comforted that the strange is real, and we're happy that it is. Enjoy your journey.

Book Description
"William Nicholson is rightly regarded as one of the great artistic talents of the 20th century....His oeuvre was impressively diverse, and this excellent book covers his woodcuts, landscapes, still lifes, murals, portraits, and designs for theater costumes and sets. Edited by Nicholson's grandson, the informative text is based upon contemporary records, articles, and quotes from numerous letters Nicholson wrote to his family and friends. Much of this material is published for the first time, and with 110 color plates and 250 black-and-white illustrations, this is a highly useful overview of a remarkable talent." Nicholson on Nicholson.......2003-07-26
Sir William Nicholson has been neglected probably more than he should have. As one of the most innovative graphic designers of the turn of the 20th century (along with his brother in law Jonathon Pryde), he rates more study than he has thus far achieved. A biography which manages to successfully focus on the particulars of his life and probably is in long overdue. Nicholson did have the sort of life that would interest a biographer, innovative and controversial artist (based on ground breaking depiction of Queen Victoria), father-in-law to Robert Graves, and painting instructor to Winston Churchill. Perhaps someone will discover Nicholson and produce the blockbuster life study that he deserves.
For the time being, this beautiful book addresses half of this equation in that it covers the work in comprehensive fashion. Lavishly illustrated one comes away with a sense of what made Nicholson a great artist and in a variety of mediums.
I must confess that my favorite works by Nicholson have been the early lithographs and advertising posters. The lithographs are still available to collectors (though generally not sold in sets as Nicholson intended) while outstanding examples of the posters were reproduced in the Maitres de l'enfich" series which are likewise highly collectable. This book provides ample representation of Nicholson's restained use of color and line to produce an end product that I think is incredibly amazing.
The only criticism that I have is regarding the section on paintings. I have viewed some of the originals in the Tate Gallery in London and in some cases the colors do not completely match the originals (which have far more depth). Other than this minor flaw I believe this to be one of the finest books on Nicholson and the best study of his work as a whole.
Book Description
The 1984 edition of this book has been updated to follow Don and Phil's career over the past 15 years since the Reunion.
The author has undertaken extensive interviews with both the brothers for this update, giving an in-depth insight into their differing personalities and outlook on life and music.
The opportunity has been taken to redesign the book, and it includes an updated discography that covers both their new recordings and the significant compilations which have been released, drawing on their rich catalogue of recorded music.
There will be approximately 80 photographs, many of them new to this edition.
As Roger White says in his preface to the book: 'The Everly Brothers were, and are, unique. This book is intended to show, through a review of their lives and careers, why this is so.'

If you're into good harmonies, this is worth reading.......1998-08-24
Roger White's original book was great reading. This is an even better revized version. Over 10,000 words added, including recent interviews with the brothers. A different size, different back cover (great color picture) and 15 new photos, 3 of which were never published before.

Silly Teenaged stuff.......2000-05-10
This book was a gosh-golly-gee whiz book with no substance. Notworth my time, certainly. It was nothing more than Everly fanmail. These people do NOT walk on water!
Phil & Don.......2000-04-02
This is a fascinating story of family and the pop culture of America. Filled with interviews, quotes, and photos, the book documents the move of Ike and Margaret Everly from the coal mines of Kentucky to Chicago and throughout the Midwest in search of success in the music business, as well as the successes and personal pain of their sons. A must read for fans of rock and roll, social historians, and Everly fans. I loved it, couldn't put it down, and had to have my own copy. Phil and Don are presently touring every year and play in their parents' hometown every Labor Day weekend. Like their story, the music never grows stale.
soft sell; superficial.......1999-09-11
Having read the book and knowing some of the facts this is a very traditional writing of facts well known. Of course the Everly's are not ones to be very open, but better research could have been available. Years of abusenot even touched upon
A (MUST HAVE)for all Everly fans........1999-08-05
I found this book to be fascinating,I just could not put it down. I learned a lot about the Everlys (things I did not know before). There are lots of photos and it covers their entire lives. I would certainly recommend Ikes Boys to all Everly fans everywhere.

If you really want to get a good idea of what makes these guys tick, buy this book. I laughed myself silly with Ms. Dodge's sense of humor. Enjoyed it immensely.

An uncomplete overview of Everly Brothers recordings.......1998-08-24
Although this book gives us a rather detailed insight in the Everlys Cadence/Warner recordings it's nonetheless lacking information about other time periods.
