Book Description
In 1867, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow completed the first American translation of
Inferno and thus introduced Dante’s literary genius to the New World. In the
Inferno, the spirit of the classical poet Virgil leads Dante through the nine circles of Hell on the initial stage of his journey toward Heaven. Along the way Dante encounters and describes in vivid detail the various types of sinners in the throes of their eternal torment.

Hell of a book.......2007-03-29
This a a great companion for Pearl's Dante Club. Keep it close by.
Good translation by a master poet.......2006-07-15
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is the man most responsible for bringing Dante to the new world, where The Divine Comedy had long been held as superstitious Catholic hogwash by the largely Protestant population that settled here. In translating the Comedy and bringing into respectable circles in the United States, Longfellow not only reintroduced a great poet to a lost audience but created a great translation himself.
Longfellow's is not the best translation of Dante's work, but it is one of the finest as a poem in its own right. The language is stilted and difficult at times to the modern ear, but its tone and grandeur are perfect for capturing the vision of the world's greatest poet. This is a good introduction to Dante for the student and the casual reader alike. Longfellow's notes are good, but not great. Look to another edition, like Mark Musa's or Charles Singleton's, for more extensive notes.
Highly recommended.
Longfellow's and other translations.......2006-05-09
I'd just like to point out that notwithstanding the reviewer below, Longefellow was not the first to do an English translation of Dante. That was Rev. Henry Cary's black verse version, published 1810 (?). Readers who are looking for accuracy should check out John Singleton's prose translation with extensive commentary, but in my opinion Longfellow's version is the most satisfying overall. In only makes sense: Longfellow had the most innate talent of all Dante's English translators (at least that I've read).
The Longfellow Translation of Inferno.......2005-08-23
I have read and taught several different translations of Dante's Inferno, but I was not aware that Longfellow had been the first to translate it into English. Although it is not written in Terza Rima, it is a beautiful, flowing and elegant rendition of Dante the Pilgrim's descent through the nine levels of hell. I teach Inferno in college, and although my books are ordered for this semester, I intend use the Longfellow translation for the next course.

Super Reader.......2007-08-26
This is first and foremost a Lobo story. So, not a book for the little kids. Much slaughtering of unsavory types and innocent planetary populations ensues (the latter not by Lobo, but by what turns out to be the remnants of the Coluan computer tyrants). If that is more your thing, you will like it a bit more. The Manhunter guest stars, so to speak, and Superman is really only a cameo participant, by and large. Some deliberate cheesy character naming - Taran Quarantino, as a bounty hunter's pimp, basically, and K'Baal the dark magician bounty hunter.
Pretty Good Book.......2007-04-13
I thought this was going to be a Superman novel with Martian Manhunter and Lobo guest-starring. Wrong. This is primarily a Lobo novel. There are some morbidly hilarious scenes in this book. Grant's characterization of Lobo is right on. Three days well spent on this entertaining book. Looking foward to your next novel, Mr. Grant
Interplanetary bounties...on to our story!.......2007-02-28
Got this at a local bookstore, but I thought I'd add my 2c anyways.
Last Sons did resemble a Superman ep where Lobo and Superman were "targets" because of their uniqueness. However, I don't think it detracts from the entertainment value of the story.
It takes a while for the action to arrive, however, I am a reader that appreciates an interesting history or build up. One aspect I enjoyed a whole lot was the abilities of Lobo's bike! :) Who knew....ah but let's not add any spoilers.
Well written by and large, I only dinged a star for slight similarities to already established storylines (would have only dinged half if that were allowed). But hey...once a piece of fiction is around long enough, everything's bound to have been done right? (Simpsons did it!!!!)
Weak effort.......2006-10-03
I looked at the book and because Lobo, the Martian Manhunter and Superman were in it I purchased the book assuming that it would be a good story with great fight scenes between the main characters. The book has very little action. It spends much of the time portraying Lobo as a Wolverine rip-off and the Manhunter as a Sap. The first half of the book has no action. Surprisingly (or not with such a week story) there is much inuendo and sexual content which was unexpected because these are characters that teenagers would be interested in. It was truly a waste of money.
What you get here in this book. .......2006-07-08
The plot is basically the same concept of the ol "Main Man" 2 part episode of Superman. Yes, the one from WB. Except Martian Manhunter gets tossed into the mix.
It mostly about Lobo, that is why I give it 5 stars.

Book Description
October 5, 2140. After a half-dozen years of research and testing, Starfleet prepares to launch its first warp 5 vessel -- Daedalus. Propelled by a radical new engine designed by Earth's most brilliant warp field theorist, Victor Brodesser, the new ship will at last put the stars within mankind's reach.
But on the eve of her maiden voyage, a maintenance engineer, Ensign Charles Tucker III -- "Trip" to his friends -- discovers a flaw in Daedalus's design. When he confronts Brodesser, the scientist -- as charismatic as he is brilliant -- eases Trip's concerns. The ship launches on schedule, and as Trip watches in horror, it explodes in a catastrophic ion cascade reaction, killing all aboard.
Thirteen years pass. Still haunted by memories of that disaster, Trip now serves as chief engineer aboard Enterprise. When a freak explosion cripples his vessel, leaving her helpless before a surprise attack, Trip is forced to abandon his ship -- and his shipmates. As he is on the verge of mounting a desperate rescue attempt, however, a shocking turn of events forces him to confront the ghosts of Daedalus one final time.

A proof reader would have been nice..........2005-08-22
Over all, I enjoyed this book, and book 2.
However, there were a few things that definitely annoyed me. The first being that the dates didn't make any sense with how old Trip is. I think I worked out that he would have had to be a Lieutenant at 16, or something ridiculous like that.
Second, just general bad editing. Lt. Hess is on two ships at once at one point...these are the sort of things that bug readers, and how hard would they have been to fix?
captain59@yahoo.com.......2005-06-01
This is an outstanding book...one of my favorite Star Trek novels of all time. This is a deep Trip story, where we learn more about the officer and the man. What impresses me is the character development of not only Trip, but the new characters introduced in this book. Many times, characters in books (and episodes, for that matter) are just shells of what the could be...nothing more than reactionary placeholders. The characters in this book truly evolve and you get to like them. I could see Trip staying with this crew for the rest of his career, and I would enjoy reading about that. He really becomes one with them.
I have only one complaint about this book: people shake their head way, way too much!
Best Enterprise novel to date.......2004-08-21
'Daedalus' by Dave Stern is undoubtably the best Enterprise novel to date, and echoes with the hallmarks of great Trek.
The story of part 1 is centred around Charles 'Trip' Tucker, Chief Engineer of Enterprise and one of the leading actors in the show.
Basically, Trip and Hoshi are forced to abandon Enterprise in the cell ship after their ship is crippled and boarded in a sneak attack. From there, they are picked up by the opponents of the forces that took control of Enterprise, a desperate military organisation on the verge of collapse.
This puts Trip in a delicate position, does he use his Starfleet technology on training to aid his new allies, even though it would violate the Prime Directive?
Matters are further complicated when it is revealed that Starfleet technology had a hand in starting the war, and that the enemy now have their hands on even more advanced technology in the form of Enterprise.
The story is exciting, gripping, and character centred, all the good things that you want from a Star Trek novel.
The writing itself is a little unorthodox, and not quite like any previous form of Trek writing. Stern is a very factual, practical writer, and writes a novel with the minimum of verbose descriptions and the maximum of dialouge. This is not a bad thing, but it is different to previous authors.
The dialouge itself is extremely well done, and Stern really conveys the characters thoughts and intentions through it. One of my favourite scenes from the book is during Trip's initial meeting with Marshall Kairn, when Kairn puts the hard word on Trip about joining the Guild. The scene shows just how desperate things are for the Guild, and sets the scene for the rest of the book.
But overall it is a solid story, and definitely the best Enterprise novel to date.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and recommend it to any Star Trek fan.
Yet another great "Star Trek" book!.......2004-06-16
Even though I grew up with the Original Series Star Trek, I also came to love TNG as well and, later, VOYAGER and ENTERPRISE. Being an avid fan of sci-fi in general, however, it would be an injustice on my part not to mention the many other old and new sci-fi works that both led me to Star Trek and which have forever forged my love for all sci-fi works: "Stranger in a Strange Land", "Puppet Masters", "Foundation", "2001", "2010", "Rendezvous with Rama", "Ringworld", all the "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" books, as well as books as new to the genre as "Advent of the Corps" and others.
Superbly written book........2004-05-19
Fascinating story, good pacing, good action, deft handling of characters. The only flaw (if one agrees with me that it IS a flaw) is that it doesn't finish. It ends with a "to be continued", a practice which, common as it is, I despise. If you don't mind being left hanging until the next book for an end to the story, then consider this a five-star rating.

Insightful.......2006-03-11
A.J. Drew is a wonderful author and by his writtings is very knowledgeable on the subject of Wicca. This is a great book for the male's point of view, and I encourage all men and women to read it!
Very good source but.......2005-02-23
I truely enjoyed this book and was quite happy with the matterial and the explanation that it is not just for men. The book does a good job of reminding you that both the male and female are required and have beauty in them one cannot exist without the other, contrary to may peoples belief today. we look at nature and find the magic of life and this book does bring that magic to a compeling view that the male force must not be shut out but niether can you not recognize the great importance of the female.
Now for the but part the book is easy to read and well writen perhaps abit more intune with the needs of a beginner or as a sorce book if you have experience it is still and excelent choice of matterial but definately seemed more aimed at the begginer.
Reconciliation of Goddess and God.......2004-01-29
I find myself trying to break away from the unforgiving, intolerant religion of my fathers, only to be shunned by the largest, fastest growing pagan religion in the U.S. It seems that after several millennia of abuse from the "patriarchal" religions, women have taken the only religion that does not oppress them or make them look like Jezebels and tried to make it their own. Thing is, they made it almost exclusively their own, projecting the same attitude toward men as has been shown to them for so long. Well, this book sets the record straight by pointing out that there is a room a plenty at Gods (esses) table. This book embraces all that is male (The Horned God) and introduces HOW TO EMBRACE THE GODESS AS WELL. This book is a true reconciliation between the two sexes. I started reading this book to affirm my place in the Wiccan religion. Only to find out it had already been done, and now know the real difference between a REAL witch, and these scissor-happy, man hating, neo-feminist "earth mothers" I always seem to run into. This book not only points out the incorrect way many Wiccan covens practice this religion, but also assures the curious and spiritually destitute man that Wicca, in fact, means MALE WITCH. (Sorry, ladies) However, this book takes it one-step further. I now realize the true beauty in seeing a gender duality in divinity because I found out that the Goddess (portion of Divinity seen as female) has never hated me nearly as much as I feared her.
Guys, I am happy to report that SHE IS NOT A THREAT and will welcome you with arms open, not closed. She loves and cares for our father and the reverse is true. THEY ARE THE SAME. I feel the Gods rage in this book as he explains through the author the hurt and outrage he feels to this day when it came to be that man had forsaken his wife, his partner. His best friend, his soul mate. OUR MOTHER.
Now that I have digested and assimilated this new philosophy and religion, I see God and myself in a very different light. In doing so, certain things have happened almost literally overnight.
I have come to know a peace I have never known before and it is through tears of joy that I can now release a lifetime of bigotry, sexism, rage, hate and pain. Simply put:
The Goddess has helped me heal.
Now I understand the conceptual philosophy of gender duality attributed to all things divine and profane, I feel that I know now who my mother is.
And she is so...very...beautiful.
I have been shown that to accept my mother DOES NOT MEAN I MUST FORSAKE MY FATHER. It is the piece missing from the myriad of one-side confusion myself and others have been raised to believe. I now see women in a completely different light as a result of seeing myself differently the product of seeing The Almighty differently. This book IS NOT MEANT as an affirmation for men to reassure them that their conception of divinity must be REPLACED, but EXPANDED. Things began to click with me instantly while Ishtar smiled. All she wanted was for me to know who she was. Moreover, to know that although I may have never known WHO or WHAT she was, she has never forgotten who I AM. More is the pity. Better late than never I suppose.
This book is a calling to all male pagans Wiccan and non-Wiccan alike, to now join our sisters in reuniting the planet as a family and not strangers. Though I would venture to say that a reference to the Goddess as the "consort" to the God would be met with equal disdain from the True Wiccan Woman and earth-mother alike, it also serves to show them how equally distasteful it is to us to have the God referred to by the same title. Unless of course, you mean consort as "partner," that is.
That IS what you meant, right?
THIS BOOK IS FOR MEN AND WOMEN BOTH. To enlighten the man about the Ways of the Wood, while setting the record straight with our fairer counterparts as to equality and "practice what you preach." Ladies, I love you all. Please know that we (men) are coming from the same battle torn, madhouse that is modern religion and we are just as bruised, bloody and hurting as you were when you left. We are glad you have capitalized on a little known secret and exposing it to the world, but please remember that those who started this ball rolling in the 20th century meant to re surface something beautiful and a LOT of those pioneers...
WERE MEN. Buckland and Gardener to name but a few. Remember the witch who helped repeal the anti-witchcraft laws of England in 1951? O.K. that, my dearest sisters was a MAN. Quite a few of these guys were in fact, freemasons, like myself. And it is by no means a coincidence that our initiation rituals are so similar. No coincidence at all, ladies. So when you see one of us staggering toward your camp, hungry, beaten and torn, understand that a kind word, a hot meal and a warm bed can do more for a person in that condition (male or female) than a closed door ever could. See what I have come to understand is that the God (or the conception thereof) did not do this to all of us. HIS INSANE FOLLWERS DID. They took off his horns and replaced them with guns. THIS IS NOT THE GOD. This wrongful conception of masculinity must stop and this book subtly points that out. Even if you are a soldier and have been to war, you want to show me how brave you are?
Try changing a diaper tough guy. Lets see how bad you REALLY are.
We are not just soldiers and conquerors. We are husbands, fathers, lovers and protectors. We are the hunter, the farmer and the Holy Man. When did we loose sight of our roles and responsibilities AS MEN?
When did the farmer become the executive, the warrior a soldier? When did the hunter become a poacher, and the father a deadbeat dad? When did the husband become a tyrant and the father become just a picture on somebody's wall. But most importantly:
What about Mom?
WHEN DID WE KICK HER OUT OF THE HOUSE?
When we did that, we kicked out our wives and mothers as well, tossing out the baby with the bathwater, turning our women into slaves and thus begun the Ruination of the World.
Read this book. Because it can change yours.
Blessed Be :-}
Misleading...Where's the Male Stuff???.......2003-11-20
The book's title leads you to think that the book is geared towards Men. As you read through, you quickly realize that it would be better titled Creation's Covenant's View of Wicca.
I'll agree that the book is great for those uninformed about the Craft, and looking for information. Unfortuately, someone looking to break away from the female dominated stereotype of Witches will not find much help here. It rarely seperates the genders and focus' on coven-work, as opposed to something a male solitary would find helpful.
I was looking for a book to take to my male friends to help explain what I believe. That would have proven to be a mistake because as I am not part of the author's group, and he doesn't stray from their beliefs very often.
Great book...........2002-04-30
This is a great book! lots of info. Some of the stuff I dont agree with but might be great for others!

Customer Reviews:
good beer + good food = good purchase.......2006-11-03
I have bought a lot, perhaps too many, books on beer with food. My first was The Brewmaster's Table, by Garrett Oliver--which I highly recommend. That book was entirely about craft beer and Oliver's opinions on pairing beer with food. Harlow's book differs from Oliver's in that it is actually a cook book--and a darn good one at that. Rather than the wealth of information that Oliver provides regarding specific breweries and their beers, Harlow focuses his energy partly on pairing general styles of beer with food, but mostly on the recipes that he feels lend themselves to pairing with beer.
Compared to most of the other books I have purchased in this genre, Harlow does not waste our time with crappy recipes where cooking WITH beer is the focus. Thus, few of the recipes contained actually use beer as an ingredient--which I appreciate. Further, the recipes are regionally diverse. Sure, the longest chapter is the one with "American" recipes, but it is only one of six total chapters of recipes. Other regions whose cuisine Harlow provides us with include the Germanic region, the Mediterranean, East and Southeast Asia, India, North Africa, and Latin America. Within these sections, Harlow provides useful tips and techniques for cooking in general, and interesting ideas regarding beer. In other words, there is a lot of extra information here that is interesting and/or useful, not just recipes. While these interspersed bits of info are not included in the table of contents (which lists, in order, all the recipes contained in each section), they are referenced in the index, which is extensive and well-organized.
The first 20 or so pages of the book are divided into a few sections: an introduction on the current state of brewing in the world; "Brewing in the West," a brief history of brewing in the US; "The Brewing Process," giving a beginner's outline of the process and then a Glossary of terms including beer styles and tasting terminology, with perhaps too brief entries for each; and "Beer at the Table," which is a very well written passage on pairing beer with food and the things to think about when deciding a pair. I liked this section a lot because he had a more cuisine-oriented approach than Oliver--it's just good to have both sides!--and he breaks down the sensory components of flavor and how beer contributes to each.
If you're at all pondering whether or not to get this book, think no further. BUY IT! It was published recently (2002), has 150 recipes, and will definitely be of use to you if you're at all interested in any of the above-mentioned subjects.

Intricate.......2007-10-10
I ordered this book in the hopes that I would find something I could use for work. I am a graphic designer. From my point of view, this book is perfect. Every page is filled with black and white, (probably bitmapped) images of lace. Some are art deco in style. Some look more like they are from the arts and crafts style. Some are more geometric. All are intricate. There are about 2 pages of publisher's note focusing on the history of lace. There are 2 sets of alphabets and 1 set of numbers. It was an excellent find for me. Hope it will be for you as well.
Falls short of expectations.......2006-05-25
While this book shows incredible detail in the images of lacework, it does not provide a single word on the sources or dates of the lace pieces. This book will provide inspiration for lacemakers or designers (not patterns!) Historical costumers or reproduction lacemakers who require documentation for their work will wish to pass by this resource.
At last a book for skilled lacemakers.......2000-06-10
I know and appreciate very much Ms. Grafton's books. Being a lacemaker, a crocheter and an embroiderer, I really love the variety of laces presented in this book. Antique prints, drawings and photographs bring us many examples of historical laces. Needlelace plus Bruges, Venetian, Milanese, Teneriffe, Battenberg laces and Square-net embroidery are all presented in this book. Although very appealing to the eye, it could disappoint the novice lacemaker, because there are no instructions, prickings or diagrams; only a wealth of exquisitely detailed laces from many ages and countries. Anyway, it's a good source for advanced lacemakers (embroiderers, crocheters...): they can draw inspiration from those patterns to develop their own designs and prickings.

Great source of ideas.......2007-10-14
Some comments about this book:
1) It's all pictures, not text. Something which I like (personal preference though). 700 pictures/500 kitchens.
2) Most of the kitchen (including the "romantic/traditional" ones) are really modern ("European" as some would call it here), not a book for people looking to create the "traditional" kitchen. Something I like, but again a personal taste.
3) I actually do not like most of the kitchens layouts in the book (again personal taste), but it helped me a lot to decide about combinations of materials (dark floor/light floor, corian/stone, metal/wood, etc.). I now know what NOT to do.
All in all, a good source of ideas.
Worthless For What I Needed.......2007-05-19
The book is great if you want 700 pages of sterile looking European kitchens. But if you want lots of ornate wood and raised panel cabinet doors, find a different book; this isn't it.
500 beautiful pictures of unique kitchens.......2007-02-04
I think the kitchens are all european. The pictures are mostly full page. There is almost no text. There is very little sourcing (names of some designers in tiny type on the side of the picture, you'll have to google to find contact information, and then they'll be somewhere in europe.). This isn't a guide to fixtures. This is a book you'd use to communicate what you want to architects.
I love this book, but again, there is no sourcing, and you can't use it as a guide to fixtures.
Great resource.......2006-11-14
Whether you are working with a designer, building a house or just looking for ideas, this is an important and valuable book. NOTE: it is 99% photos of different styles and designs of kitchens. It is broken up into modern, country, minimalist, etc, and each section has about 30 photos of different kitchens. It contains no descriptions of materials or how toos. The photos are fabulous and the ideas are varied. I guarantee that you will find a kitchen that fits your style in this books. Good luck!
Book Description
Ultimate Guide to Kitchens guides the reader through the process of designing and doing the work involved with remodeling a kitchen or building a new one from scratch. Homeowners will find inspirational information on layout and design, but most of the book covers step-by-step instruction in installing sinks, faucets, countertops, appliances, and floor and wall finishes. General construction projects, such as building walls, adding windows, and completing electrical and plumbing work, are also covered.Homeowners can use the book to do the entire project or pick the parts that interest them.

Good book-full of information.......2007-07-09
I had already seen this book in person at the book store and had looked through it to find a book that contained a little bit about everything when it came to remodeling a kitchen. If you're looking for a book that hits on everything but doesn't go into too much detail about each project, you'll like this book. It has lots of colorful pictures and ideas on how to do things along with 'how-tos' on cermaic tile to hardwood flooring to picking out lights.

Visual Comparison of the Great Typefaces.......2004-08-26
The visual analysis of letterforms make the book worth the money. No other book is as broad in comparing the different "cuts" of the classics. If you are bewildered by the vast number of type faces availible, then this book will explain how so many similarly-named and similar-looking faces came to be and how to discriminate among them. The book will teach you be more selective in your purchasing of typefaces.
Proof that Classic is cutting edge in digital design.......2002-04-03
Revival is a true celebration of classic typestyles, deeply rooted in the history, yet exercising powerful influence on today's world of visual communications. At the same time, it's a stunning visual milestone of layout and design.
The Revival team presents an exciting look at comtemporary versions of the great, classic typefaces, explaining the surge of interest in these revivals. Within these covers you'll find all the names you've heard, but may not be well acquainted with: Bodoni, Caslon, Garamond, Bembo, Didot, Clarendon, Cheltenham, Galliard, Jenson, and on and on. Each face is thoughtfully annotated with the history of its origins along with superb visual examples of the face in use.
Each spread is truly a visual treat -- you have no idea -- a lesson in good design. The text of the book is a complete course in typography that colleges and universities should adopt it as the text for "Introduction to Typography."
Spend a little time with this book and, like me, you'll be looking around for clients and projects where you can exercise this new shot-in-the-arm of design energy. If you design, or work with type and typography in any form, you should not hesitate even a second before ordering this book. If you read the pages of DT&G, or the Design Center, then you absolutely must have this book. When I refer to Centaur or Egyptian, Humanist or Frutiger, you'll share the understanding and great appreciation for the masters and the type faces they have bestowed upon the world of visual communications. It just doesn't get any better than this.

A Letdown.......2001-04-24
I regret to say that Revival of the Fittest is a letdown. While it is visually attractive, there are errors (though some are relatively benign), and an incorrect statement that should not have survived the editorial process. Teachers should be warned away from this book, seductive as the graphics and layout may be. This reviewer works in font production at Agfa Monotype, one of the type companies whose fonts are discussed in the book (mostly in a positive manner, so there are no axes to grind), and he is familiar with the material. These are some of the problems: A misspelled name (pg 28) and a wrong date (pg 22) should have been caught by proofreaders/fact checkers. There is a factual error on page 23 about kerning with the Monotype hot metal typecasting machine. On page 52 the statement is made that Monotype PostScript fonts are not hinted. This is wrong information. Oddly, for a book about typefaces, the majority of which were designed for use in books, few examples of contemporary usage in text are shown; most examples are of advertising and posters. Comparisons of different versions of a font can be extensive, but without judging just what difference it makes, or what one version might be better used for versus another. The page layout can be clotted and uneven in color. Finally, I suggest much more mature books for a class on typography are Doyald Young's "Fonts and Logos", from Delphi Press, and Robert Bringhurst's "The Elements of Typographic Style".
An Essential Design Book, and A work of art.......2000-09-23
Internationally renowned historian, designer, author, and educator Philip B. Meggs, teams up with editor Roy McKelvey and a number of design graduate students to create his latest breathtaking work. Meggs is best known for his major work, A History of Graphic Design, which is the original, imperative, summital, unequaled, and ultimate work on design history. This new book, Revival of the Fittest: Digital Versions of Classic Typefaces, evidences Meggs' success as an educator, and reinforces his greatness as a designer, historian, author, editor, and brilliant mind. Roy McKelvey and the graduate students who participated in the making of the book should not be left out. They managed to work together, with Meggs, to produce a consistent and beautiful work drawn from a wide range of typographic influences and design concepts. (Surely Meggs' stellar knowledge of the history of design, and his experience as an author, were essential resources for this team.) The entire group does deserve praise for the work itself. The design of the book is creative, bold, inspiring, and even poetic. The well-written text of the book is highly informative while entertaining. It is a joy to read and view. Revival of the Fittest is a work of art in the world of books, and it is suspected by this reviewer that the mastermind, or the artist, behind this work was Philip Meggs. Regarding his work as an educator, the time and distance to which Meggs' influence will stretch can only be estimated, but undoubtedly the knowledge and enlightenment he has added to the world of art and design will have great repercussions far beyond our current comprehension.

Decades before the term "extreme sports" was born, Jim McKay was introducing the world to sports like cliff diving, big wave surfing, and barefoot water-skiing. For nearly 55 years, the ubiquitous McKay was the host of ABC's Wide World of Sports. As the Saturday afternoon master of ceremonies, McKay was always adept at pointing out the wealth of human achievement as well as the "agonies of defeat." His autobiography details many of the more memorable moments in a lifetime of sports.
Book Description
Jim McKay, one of the first ever television hosts, is best-known as the long-time lead anchor on ABC's "Wide World of Sports," the show that became the benchmark for sports television programming.
McKay won an Emmy for his sensitive coverage of the tragic hostage crisis at the 1972 Munich Olympics, and he recounts that unprecedented 15-hour broadcast in harrowing detail. But McKay still believes in the purity, beauty, and glory of sports, and the book is filled with the wonderful events he covered in his sparkling 50-year career. He rates the greatest moments and the greatest athletes in his "Jim McKay Rankings." Among his favorites are down-to-the-wire finishes in Triple Crown races, Bob Beamon's record-breaking long jump at the 1968 summer Olympics, the celebrated battles between Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, and many more. With his trademark warmth and humor, McKay also shares never-before-told stories from the world of sports and the early days of television. The Real McKay is an uplifting and inspiring picture of sports and a testament to the triumph of the human spirit.
"Jim McKay is a great gentleman and one of America's best ambassadors in the world of sports. He has a fascinating story to tell--don't miss it!" --Jack Nicklaus
Customer Reviews:
Marvellous McKay.......2001-03-13
Jim McKay's autobiography doesn't start with backstory of his early life but with a remarkable minute-by-minute description of the crisis at the 1972 Olympic Games. McKay, now 27 years after that event, recalls it with such detail that it seemed to have happened last evening. For someone who was born after this event happened, it was amazing to read the story of what happened by a guy who was actually there.
This is one of my highlights in the book. McKay, not his real name - which is a funny story - takes the reader through his life. How he was a newspaper reporter turned song-and-dance man and to how he became one of the best sports reporters in televsion history.
If you've ever heard a sporting even called by Jim McKay, the atmosphere is set so wonderfully, it's almost like you're there. The same is true for this book. Pick up a copy. -usc503@aol.com
P.S. It won't be the same watching the Kentucky Derby, Preakness (McKay's favorite race) and Belmont without Jim McKay - we miss you already!
