Frustrating.......2006-08-12
This is the story of Lucy, an airline stewardess who starts an affair with a prince, Guido. She finds herself falling in love with him even though she knows he'll never love her, she's just his mistress. She is a master of hiding her emotions because she senses Guido will be scared of at any outward sign. It is actually tearing her up inside. Lucy breaks things off with Guido after realizing she'll end up with a broken heart and then finds out she is pregnant. Guido knows he'll never love, he's just not capable of it. AS a matter of fact, that's what attracted him to Lucy, she doesn't seem needy emotionally. Also, their sex life is the best he's ever experienced. When he orders Lucy to marry him, it is only because of their child.
The sexual chemistry is explosive in this story but the total lack of emotion in Guido is bothersome. Even when their child is born he doesn't show any emotion. Of course the happily ever after finally arrives, but the last minute show of emotion just seems a little too late and forced for me.
Tumultous love story with blackmail and surprise.......2005-10-05
In the beginning our heroine is Guido's mistress and he's content with it but she secretly loves him. He whisks Lucy off to see his new nephew being baptized but they end up having a huge disagreement and she flies back home. However, Guido's mistress finds out she's pregnant with her prince's baby and she tells him. Naturally he insists they get married and warns her if she refuses, he will find ways to get her to agree and she is forced to sign a pre nup relinquishing custody to the royal family if they divorce. It breaks her heart to realize she must stay married to this man to keep her child. Guido finds himself falling deeper and deeper in love with her while she tries to see what pushes his buttons. In the end they are forced to admit they are in love with each other and welcome their daughter as a possible heir to the throne, if Guido's brother doesn't have any children.

A Royal Treat.......2000-07-25
A king discovers that there is no money left in "the royalpurse" and panics to find a way to raise money for the royalpeople at the castle. Suggestions are given and it is finally decided that the castle will be opened to the public, with admission charged to those who enter. In order to draw people to the castle, ice cream, created by Dr. Potamus, is promised to each guest. The incompetent "royal chart-maker" creates a map to the castle and the ice cream is made for the anticipated guests. When the princes and princess of the castle find lines of people walking to their uncle's castle across town instead of their castle, they begin to worry. How were they going to get all those people to their castle before the ice cream melted? This book was entertaining and fun to read, as it provided plenty of dialogue between the unique characters. It was also neat to see how the children in the story were involved in making decisions for the castle. There was a great deal of sarcastic humor used in the story, which makes this story funny to older children as well as younger children. The colorful watercolor illustrations provided an action-packed visual image of the action that was taking place in the story.

I'll Never Tell. . ........2000-08-20
What a delight! My professor read this book aloud to our (adult) class, and we were all on the edges of our seats. A great book to teach about predictions and how gossip (a little information is a dangerous thing)can be hurtful. Also a great book for encouraging children to read on their own to "see what happens" as well as encouraging them to begin writing. The illustrations are colorful and compliment the text.

Book Description
Another hilarious story of mixed-up meanings in Prince Paul's castle promises to rival the hugely successful first collaboration between Ann Love and Toni Goffe, The Prince who Wrote a Letter. The King and Queen discover in the court journal that it will be their son's sixth birthday in three days! When asked what he wants, Prince Paul tells his mummy-queen and daddy-king that he wants a ball...Well, naturally, if you're the kind of parents the King and Queen are, you assume that your soon-to-be-six year old wants a grand dancing ball in the great hall for all his friends and the nobility of surrounding kingdoms - and that's how the fun begins
"Will it be a small ball or a large ball? Well, large, please, father...for me and my friends. Will you need a coach (to carry your guests to the ball, of course)? My friend, Jim, will look after that...(he will coach the team). Of course, the court musicians will play...Oh, but father, they're not very good...Don't be unkind - they can practice..."
...Get the drift?
After much confused ado, the big day arrives. The "ball" is to be given at five o'clock in the great hall. The guests are gathered in their finest formal frocks when Prince Paul and his friends burst in wearing their soccer uniforms! Alas, there is a ball to dance at but no ball to play with. Is Paul's day ruined? Prince Peter's clever granny saves the day with her present for Prince Paul - a wool soccer ball she knit specially so the children could play indoors!

Good science fiction.......2004-05-10
The acceptance of different sexualities in future societies has long been a staple of science fiction. To downgrade this book on the basis that it deals in part with homosexuality does it a disservice. If you don't like HOW it deals with the issue (meaning the writing is awkward, belabored, etc.,), that's one thing. To object because it DOES deal with it is a completely different situation. This book deals with the issue of who you are, both genetically and sociologically. Who you are depends so much on your experiences in life, the people who had an effect on you as you grew, your inborn personality, and the way you interact with the world and the way the world interacts with you. So yes, homosexuality is an issue in this book, but as part of a larger picture: if in the future, test-tube babies and genetic engineering become the norm, how will that affect our families? How will it affect our concepts of ourselves? But the issue of family is central: If a parent can't or doesn't provide the love and nuturing we need, it's vital to find a loving and supportive adult figure who can. If in this case, that happens to be Joss's mother's same-sex partner, so be it.
That issue aside, I found this a very good read. The characters were distinct and interesting. The situations were intriguing. It's not new for a science fiction novel to explore first contact with alien species, but Goodman's aliens have depth and texture, and the difference and similarities between the species are explored sensitively. I found the relationship between Joss and Mavkel a high point in the book. I loved Joss's rebellious, independent character, and I wanted to know more about her walk on the shady side. Between the characterizations and the well-developed sense of time and place, let alone suspense, the book definitely kept me reading.
(...) The book ends too quickly and conveniently. I saw most of the ending coming, and I found it a little obvious. I'll be recommending this book to readers, but it isn't quite at the top of my list.
Singing The Dogstar Blues.......2004-02-03
Aliens. Aliens from a distant planet have landed on the Earth. The landing was expected and anticipated. Joss Aarrenson attends an academy so she can learn how to time jump (time travel) into the history or future. The aliens that land on the Earth are called Chorians. Joss is chosen to partner up with a visiting alien who wants to learn how to time jump. Mavkel was his name, Mav for short. Mav soon becomes closer to Joss, and after a little getting used to, Joss is treating Mav like a family member. Things soon get harder and harder for Joss and Mav, and Mav is falling further into depression and closer to death. Refmol, the chorian chanter, finds that Mav must be joined telepathically with another being if he is to stay alive. Joss is the only thing, and in this case hope, for Mav. She must find her father if she is to join with Mav, but she's been trying for as long as she can remember. Why Joss? Why Mav?
This story is told in a mysterious and futuristic way that is sure to make you want to keep reading until the end. It is hilarious in parts, and always leaves a question pounding in your head that you won't find out until you're finished with the book. A thrilling and entertaining story!
A good, fun pacey read!.......2003-07-16
I really, really liked this book and I wish there was a sequel too. Joss is normal but also clever so I could relate to her and I love Mav. I was hooked from the very beginning and also go my brother who is 19 to read it and he liked it too. I live in Melbourne, Australia, and it was great to read about Melbourne in the future - the author really put some thought into that, and also the humour. The ending was really exciting too.
Takes too long to get started.......2003-07-13
I almost didn't make it through this book (and that's unusual for me). It was obvious the author was building up to something right from page one, but the thing never got going until 7/8 of the way through! Then the final 1/8 all zipped by in a way that seemed way too easy and convenient and not worth all the buildup.
On the bright side, the narrator was a fun sort of character, a spunky girl with a history of trouble and an attitude that never quit. A good character lost in a mediocre, slow-moving plot.
Love it.......2002-02-04
This book is one of my favourites, it varys from subjects like time and space travel to a slight racism. The charecter Mav is fantastic, i love this and the input of music as healing is fantastic, i would love it if there was a sequal
Book Description
'The Potter stories, far from being 'wicked' or 'Satanic,' ... are in fact narratives of robust faith and morality ...'What Ms. Rowling has furnished us, besides what the Brits call 'a good read,' and a whopping good one, ... is a modern interpretation of the gospel, the wonderful news that 'God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself' and making sure that the goodness of creation would never be obliterated by the forces of darkness and evil.'Since their first publication, J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels have brought joy to children and adults alike. Many conservative Christians in the United States, however, have decried the books as wicked, as preaching witchcraft and the occult, and as glamorizing dishonesty. A minister in New Mexico held a 'holy bonfire' on the Sunday after Christmas 2001, at which he publicly torched the Potter books, declaring them 'an abomination to God and to me.' John Killinger, a Congregationalist minister and an academic in the field of contemporary literature, beautifully demolishes the objections of right-wing Christians to this bestselling children's series. He compellingly argues that, far from corrupting children's morals, the Potter stories actually influence young readers to follow the teachings of Jesus. He cites passage after passage to illustrate how the world of Harry Potter would be inconceivable apart from the strictures of Judeo-Christian theology and the way human existence should be approached by every follower of Jesus. Additionally, he reflects on the possibility that Harry Potter, like Dostoevsky's Prince Myshkin and others, is a witting or unwitting Christ figure who actually battles the forces of darkness for the souls of the faithful. All through this extraordinarily well-written, compelling, and very entertaining little book, the author points out that stories like this are worth more than any sermon toward producing people who truly follow the lessons of Jesus.

Boy Wizard's Worst Defense.......2007-04-19
While the title of this book looks promising, its content leaves much to be desired. At times, Rev. Killinger has a rollicking read, cleverly weaving Scripture and passages from the Harry Potter novels. MOST of the time, however, he is clunky, pedantic, and tries to string together unrelated ideas. Killinger opens the book bragging about how many churches he has led,and ends up being the mirror-image,mainline version of Richard Abanes, author of the "Harry Potter and the Bible" rant.
For example, when Killinger discusses Harry summoning his father's spirit as a Patronus,he drags in the New Age bestseller "Embraced by the Light", the Tibetan Book of the Dead, and Paul's letter to the Hebrews about the "cloud of witnesses." In another section, when trying to refute the Harry Potter series' connection to the occult,he does a laundry list of miracles in the Old and New Testaments,as well as various Christian saints, that goes on for several pages. He engages in constant name-dropping,referencing Henri Nouwen's "The Wounded Healer",Marcus Borg's "Meeting Jesus again for the first time",the Apocryphal Gospels, and equating the spiritual consciousness in the series with the famous tree-sitter Julia Butterfly-Hill,who in turn he equates with "the Buddhists of the 1970s who set themselves aflame for world peace."
Killinger nobly attempts to defend the Christian content of the Harry Potter series. While he tries admirably,he fails spectacularly.
This guy hasn't done his homework.......2006-01-04
(First of all, this is coming from a huge [Christian] fan of the HP books.) While some of his points do make since, most are not sufficiently explained, and are therefore unbelieveable. Killinger makes a lot of glaring mistakes; for example, he doesn't seem to understand the concept of a dementor other than the fact that it can (can being the main word) suck out one's soul. He also gives quite a few incorrect discriptions of exact events in the books. (An example: He said that Hagrid had turned Vernon Dursley to a pig in Sorcerer's Stone, but he actually gave DUDLEY Dursley a pig's TAIL.) The one crucial point that I think he has actually brought across is the role of good vs. evil in the series.
Overall, if you are a person who is looking to see if the series is appropriote for you or your children, buy this book. Otherwise, if you are a fan looking for a good defence of the books, don't waste your time.
A good read.......2005-03-13
So far the book bas been interesting. I would like to point out that there is a mistake on page 103. It says that voldemorts wand is oak when in fact it is yew. The yew tree is symbolic of death itself. Other than that the information about the harry potter series has been correct. If you are unsure about purchasing the book check it out of your local library. Only you can decide if you like it.
Impressive.......2005-01-17
I am fully aware that some people who have not read the books think that Harry Potter is satanic. This is utter nonsense. In the books, there are a series of prophecies that foretell events in the series. If you are unaware, prophecies in the series are basically a divine intervention with events in that are happening in the wizard world in which God speaks through someone. I don't know about you, but that doesn't seem like something that would appear in a satanic book to me. I found Killinger's book insightful and well-written. On a slightly different note, do you think that Jesus would want us all to be treating others so horribly because of a children's book with God in it?
I was disappointed..........2004-11-24
The subtitle of the book is "A Christian Minister's Defense...." So how can a man with a doctorate in theology have such a poor understanding of Scripture?
If you're a conservative, Bible-believing Christian looking for a conservative biblical approach to the Harry Potter/Christianity issue, this book will surely disappoint you. The author takes a very dim view of Scripture.
I found John Granger's book to be much better written and far more informative.

Everything it needs to be--and cute to boot.......2002-05-26
Bill Lombardo, a professional chef, and Thach Bui, an illustrator, have for several years now teamed to create Americaýs only culinary comic strip: "Cheap Thrills Cuisine."
"Cheap Thrills Cuisine" features the hippie-dippy, perenially grinning Chef Peppi and simple, pretty good recipes. Motherýs Day Muffins, Lamb Chop Mignonette, Vindaloo Chicken, and Chocolate Mousse Cheese Pie are among the dozens of recipes that these two wizards somehow manage to fit into four or fewer cartoon panels and still make them seem worth making.
This would be an ideal gift not for someone who hates to cooký-a couple of the recipes are actually fairly involved and/or time-consumingý-but for the junior high or high schooler who has expressed a little interest in the goings-on in your kitchen. The book winningly combines humor with appealing recipes and visual hijinks.

Not Worth the Expense.......2006-10-01
Luckily, I purchased this book used after eyeing it for a while. Having collected medals for 20 years now, I hoped that this would shine some more light on the subject. Well, it didn't.
You would expect a decent return on an investment like this one, however what is between the covers is lackluster to say the least. The book is essentially a photo album of medals from various countries. It doesn't come anywhere close to being a complete catalog of medals, as you would expect. Sure, I wouldn't expect each and every medal to be shown, but major holes in even common medals are evident. The photos come from various sources and many look to be color plates from books published 40+ years ago. Alarmingly, huge gaps between photos and huge blow-up shots graphically demonstrate that the authors were hurting for material to fill the book. If this was the case, at least some additional historical information or information useful to collectors on the medals could of been included. Except for hit-or-miss identification of medals, this book is nothing more than a really expensive coffee table variety. I would look elsewhere for definitive coverage. Or, if you can get it for $10 like I did, go for it. It's not worth much more than that.

Learn various methods of doll making!.......2003-05-30
Wow! I had no idea one may create dolls in so many various ways! Eloise Piper teaches fabric, modeling paste, and polymer clay doll-making with patterns included in her book. She includes plain Amish children, fancy dolls, wig creating, sculpting facial features, decorating and dressing the doll. She even includes patterns for their tiny clothing! She gives embellishment ideas as well. Furthermore, Eloise has a very delightful style of writing that brings her dolls to life! I greatly enjoy authors like Eloise who present their art in a down-to-earth and humorous fashion. Not only does one enjoy creating the dolls and their adorable wardrobes, but one may count on a chuckle or two from Eloise's light-hearted humor.
This book is a keeper for those who are looking for resources which address the multiple and various techniques of creating dolls.
Happy doll making!
sewing and sculpting dolls.......2002-01-05
Just received this book today and I can't put it down! The book is the most complete how-to book I have ever seen. Eloise has put the book together from beginner to advanced with a lot of thought for the inexperienced doll-maker. Every aspect of doll-making is completely covered and I would highly recommend this book to anyone !
Sewing and Sculpting Dolls.......2001-12-06
I'm new to doll making. I am enjoying this book. I also recommend a doll book for fun reading, Dolls Aren't Just for Kids.
wonderful next step for beginner doll maker..........2001-09-20
I have the author's other book on dolls, which is also excellent. What the author shows is that using one simple to construct cloth doll body you can make literally thousands of different style dolls, by simply sewing/adding joints, lengthing patterns, changing outfit, hair, etc...
beautiful photos of dolls for play or show; simple face designs take headache out of creating the doll.
Also shows how to "deconstruct" old clothes to make new clothes for the dolls-very imaginative. This book also goes into using clay-but with a beginner in mind. I definitely recommend!
an okay book for beginner doll makers.......1999-10-14
This is an acceptable book, but nothing special, really. Some of the small dolls are rather cute, but the techniques, particularly those involving clay are very basic, and not explored particularly well. It's nice as far as it goes, but not anything for those who have made dolls before or have much experience.

Book Description
Aimed at the cigar aesthete or those admirers of "puros", as they are proudly revered in Cuba, this book gives the history and evolution of the cigar band. During the 19th century, when gentlemen wore white gloves at social gatherings, tobacco often left dirty stains on their hands. Therefore, they insisted that their suppliers cover a portion of the cigar with a protective layer. And, the cigar band was born. These bands became the armorial signet of manhood. A mark of social status and of beauty, many artists began lending their talent to the creation of these commemorative symbols. This collection of bands tells the story of the last 150 years, from the general of the War of Secession, the Presidents of the United States of America to the delicate flowers reproduced by craftsmen.
Book Description
89 miniature works of art from cigar boxes depicting lovely ladies associated with such brands as Blue Belle, La Coqueta, and Madame Butterfly; portraits of Tom Mix, Sherlock Holmes, and other celebrities; as well as pictures of cowboys, sailors, racehorses, and more. Where are the cigar labels?.......2005-01-16
As usual Ms. Grafton provides color and variety in the graphics; this book on cigar labels, however, only has a handful of graphics which are actually labelled as 'cigar labels.' Some of the graphics only indicate they are related to cigars by the men smoking in the pictures. The graphics appear to be poor copies with no indication as to what they are. They could be pictures taken out of an old magazine with no cigar seals or maker.
Collage Artist's Review.......2001-06-06
This book blew me away. Beautiful color, wonderful picture selection - a collage artists dream!

Complete and engrossing.......2007-01-13
How interesting can old American cigar labels be? Enough to fill up a full color 250 page coffee table book, at least.
The book is more than just a compendium of old labels from deceased brands, but a history lesson, a seminar in the materials and processes used in generating the labels, and a discussion of the various themes explored in the artwork, i.e. patriotism, women, theater, sports and gambling, cowboys & indians, you name it. Finally, there is some very informative stuff on collecting cigar art, searching for historic labels and estimating value. The book is the most complete work on the subject of this type of collectable Americana, and as such is recommended to all interested in the field.
Outstanding collection of a lost Americana art form.......1999-08-15
Any true collector will appreciate Davidson's initial edition, and followup version, "Smoker's Art". For those of us who pore over piles of stuff seaching for a winner, be it cigar labels or anything else, this book is a treasure trove of high quality art.
A superb reference of label art,clear,colorful, & detailed........1998-01-21
As a graphic designer this book has served me well on many projects. It is detailed with a large display of labels that are well reproduced for the viewer. The catagories add a variety subjects to the art of labels which is why many of us feel this book is like a bible. It is the most complete book so far on this subject.

Randy Lives!.......2000-02-09
A great study aid. Wolf Marshall really nails some of the harder to play by ear solos. My only criticism is the inclusion of the "Glad All Over" solo excerpt, which isn't available domestically, and was done during Randy's stint in the original Quiet Riot.
