Poetic License for kids.......2006-11-22
If adults are allowed to dream, to appreciate art and nature and to muse about poetry not quite understood, why not a book for children that allows them the same. Leave regimented rhyme to the institutional school books. This book makes a child think and appreciate.
Watership Drowned.......2004-06-21
A curiously uneven pairing of Jerry Pinkney's dark, textured illustrations with Nancy Willard's inaccessible poetry. Marketed as a book for children ages 4 - 8, Willard's words are too erudite for her audience, Pinkney's drawings too lacking in qualities apt to enrapture their targeted age group.
Presumably an attempt to marry what was best in both contributors to this sleeper of a book (Pinkney is a two-time Caldecott Honor recipient, Willard a Newberry Medalist), the final product falls flat.
Not recommended unless you are trying to put your children into a sleep characterized by dull, unimaginative dreams.

Writing a novel after having won a Nobel Prize for Literature must be even more daunting than trying to follow a brilliant, bestselling debut. In Somersault (the title refers to an abrupt, public renunciation of the past), Kenzaburo Oe has himself leapt in a new direction, rolling away from the slim, semi-autobiographical novel that garnered the 1994 Nobel Prize (A Personal Matter) and toward this lengthy, involved account of a Japanese religious movement. Although it opens with the perky and almost picaresque accidental deflowering of a young ballerina with an architectural model, Somersault is no laugh riot. Oe's slow, deliberate pace sets the tone for an unusual exploration of faith, spiritual searching, group dynamics, and exploitation. His lavish, sometimes indiscriminate use of detail can be maddening, but it also lends itself to his sobering subject matter, as well as to some of the most beautiful, realistic sex scenes a reader is likely to encounter. --Regina Marler
Book Description
Kenzaburo Oe is internationally recognized as one of the world's finest writers, and his achievements have received the Nobel Prize for Literature. Somersault, the first new novel he published since winning the Nobel, departs radically from the autobiographical fiction he was known for, in a magnificent story of the charisma of leaders, the danger of zealotry, and the mystery of faith. A decade before the story opens, two men referred to as the Patron and Guide of mankind were leaders of an influential religious movement that fell apart when a group of their more radical followers plotted an act of terrorism. Now, after ten years of silence, they are ready to return to religious leadership — but old, new, and unexpected problems threaten them. As planning proceeds for the summer conference that will launch the new church in the eyes of the world, conflicts between various factions threaten to make a mockery of the church's unity — or something far more dangerous. Somersault is an astonishing achievement that again confirms Kenzaburo Oe's place among the world's most respected writers, even as it takes his body of work in fresh and fertile directions.

Oe is disappointing on his musing about religion.......2007-01-10
A Personal Matter continues to be a favorite of this avid reader. Oe
decided to try something new and it just doesn't work. In exploring
values, beliefs he almost drills in some pretty boring characters. I
never put down a book partly read but this one was tempting.
Gad, a grind...Oe's strength is his play on words, come back master!
slow start, slower ending.......2006-07-12
I picked up this book because I am interested in Japanese culture and figure a Nobel Prize winning author writing a novel about a religious movement in modern day Japan would be right up my alley.
After about 250 pages I kept telling myself "something will actually happen soon." Unfortunately nothing did. You could argue that the ending is climactic, but I argue that by the 400th page or so the reader will be so bored and in such a hurry to just finish this monstrosity that the ending will be of little interest and even less impact.
Faith and Rebirth.......2006-04-07
"Somersault" by Kenzoburo Oe is an unusual novel for my own reading habits, though one that has a lot of appeal. Being interested in religion and spirituality, I was curious to see what he had to offer and say.
The novel follows a few characters, but they are all quickly joined together in the midst of the beginning of the Church of the New Man. Patron, the church's founder and leader, spent 10 years alone with his religious partner Guide, after they had done a "Somersault" and had claimed their old movement was all a big joke. The rise of a radical faction within that old movement prompted this dramatic event. It is the regathering of old followers and new that occupies much of the narrative of the book.
The book is filled with long dialogues and monologues, as characters' struggles and understandings of the Somersault, themselves, Patron, faith and God are all covered in this way. This means that monologues can run for a couple of pages as characters relate their pasts, their hopes, or Patron deals with his view of events.
It has been commented that the book lacks detail with the teaching of the movements. While the detail is rather sparse, there is enough content given to form some understanding of the main points of the church's doctrine and teaching. This develops through the book, a good example being the nature of Patron. The theme of repentance, renunciation of the world, trust in Patron, visions, prayer and so on are all there. The use of Biblical texts and some others are also there. For some more theologically minded readers, maybe more detail would have been nice, but the book certainly does not suffer for the lack of it.
Oe has dealt with a lot of different themes, and different ones will stand out to different people. Perhaps one that stuck with me was the nature of faith, and how it develops with various events and under differing external stimuli. Patrons 10 years of isolation were interpretted by the Quiet Women and others as his descent into hell, something Patron himself took up. The understanding of Patron's as somehow sacred also comes into view among different followers and their discussions.
Permeating the entire story is the Somersault like some shadow, and different groups' responses to it and the new movement come in for some heavy discussion among the various characters. The Technicians, the Quiet Women, Patron, Dancer, Ikuo, Kizu and others all have their own take on it.
I enjoyed the book thoroughly, and had a great time reading it. It is a thought provoking look into a religious movement that could be termed a cult, and the way in which people understand and develop their faith according to different events. Oe keeps things moving relatively well, and does not get bogged down in useless detail.
The characterisations are remarkably detailed, I found. They all had very distinctive personalities and idiosyncracies, which made them all the more life-like.
For something a bit different, "Somersault" is a fine read and a good story. Enjoyable to the last, I have to say that I recommend it to any who enjoy the themes that it deals with.
a novel about groups, forbearance, and religious yearning.......2005-02-07
I just finished reading Somersault. Several interesting themes emerge.
First, on a sociological level, it seems that Oe is fascinated, even obsessed, by groups. Almost all of the characters belong to a group: the Quiet Women, the Technicians, the office staff, the Fireflies. Even the quasi-individualistic Kizu is first and foremost generically "a professor." Characters in this novel are always strongly identified with the group to which they belong. Strong individuals such as Gii emerge as leaders of a group. Is this emphasis on groups a Japanese thing, or is it uniquely Oe?
Keeping in the sociological theme, I think Oe paints Japanese society as chock full of forbearance. All the characters tolerated each other and tried to understand why all of the other characters did what they did. They all helped each other and were thoughtful to each other's needs. Nobody was mean-spirited. Even the strong-willed characters Gii and Ikuo were, at heart, incredibly nice people. Dancer was very polite throughout. Kizu was a kindly old professor. Ogi, the Innocent Youth, is the archetype example of niceness. Even the folks who tortured Guide were quickly forgiven. Is this emphasis on polite behavior, too, a Japanese or an Oe-centric thing?
On the deeper, religious level I think it was always Oe's intent to leave the religious message from Patron deliberately ambiguous. In fact, the ambiguity of spiritualism is the take-home message of the novel.
How is this manifested in the book? Well, the vast majority of the principal players: Ogi, Dancer, Kizu, Gii, Guide himself, have no real religious conviction and are just drawn into Patron's inner circle via his cult of personality or (in the cases of Gii and Kizu) for ulterior reasons. Patron himself found his own mystical experiences incredibly ambiguous. Ikuo, a truly religious and earnest man, was not able to properly define his relationship with God, either, and this caused him tremendous stress.
The last page of the novel reveals Oe's core belief, but I don't want to give the game away. Let's just say that, if you believe in a traditional God, you might find yourself shaken to the core.
There is an exciting conclusion if you can muster up the patience to get there. There is a dramatic exchange in which Patron and Ikuo do the father-son thing, and another interesting scene where 25 women go potty together. But you have to perservere to the mid page-500's before you get those rewards.
The relation between Kizu and Ikuo is well-developed. I love the way Oe left the role of Dancer in this relationship ambiguous until the end. The relationship between Gii and Ikuo is also fascinating, and at the end, Oe foreshadows that some very turbulent times are still to come between these two strong-willed characters.
The book is as much an existential philosophical treatise as it is a novel. It also offers an important sociological perspective on modern-day Japan.
Splendid, Thoughtful Look At Religion from Oe.......2003-06-26
Kenzaburo Oe gives a thoughtful, occasionally engaging, look at religious fanaticism in his latest novel "Somersault". It is a dense depiction of the rise, fall, and subsequent rise of a religious cult. It is also an intigruing look into homosexuality in Japan and other types of societal relationships. Told primarily from the perspective of Japanese expatriate artist and professor Kizu, the story slowly unravels, taking us to and from and then back to Japan. Regrettably Oe doesn't spend as much time describing the religious values of the cult or why it had such appeal among its members. Still this is an insightful work of fiction from one of the world's foremost contemporary novelists.

An excellent guide to animal behavior.......2000-08-14
This is the single best layman's book I have ever found to explain animal behavior. Lavishly illustrated with black and white drawings, thoroughly modern in its approach to animal behavior, and absolutely readable, "Beastly Behaviors" is a book any animal lover will enjoy reading. Chock full of facts, the book is aimed at an audience stretching from junior high to adults; parents interested in the book for their children should be aware that sexual behavior is described very frankly, should that be a concern. Buy this book; you won't regret it!

Beautiful Amber is the only survivor of a brutal Viking attack, and even though her wounds heal, she refuses to speak. Powerful, handsome Truan Monroe loves Amber, but he knows that he can never claim her; beneath his pretense of being a poet and maker of simple magic tricks lurks a truth he can never reveal: Truan is a mighty warrior and sorcerer with incredible powers, including the ability to change shape. When Amber is kidnapped and taken through time to Camelot by evil Gareth, Truan discards his disguise and is recognized as the son of Merlin, the powerful magician of Camelot. Truan must save Amber, so he follows her through the centuries to Camelot, where he wages war against Malagraine, Lord of Darkness, to win Amber's freedom.

Truan's Story Book Four In The Series!.......2003-01-26
I liked this book very much! This is Truan's story. We met him in book four and now he has is own story. Truan is the son of Merlin and he feels that there is no way he can love due to the fact that he is half mortal.
Amber (we met her in previous books as well) has suffered greatly and is unable to speak. She is drawn to Traun the 'fool' and jokster. Truan despite his best attempts also finds himself drawn to the the silent beauty. The darkness manages to get a hold of Amber and takes her back to the time of Aruthr. When Camelot was more then just a legend! Here Amber is able to speak and laugh and finds herself with no memory of Truan but is drawn to him just the same. The battle of good and evil is fought yet again in this magical place and love blooms for both Truan and Amber.
This was a great read and worthy of being part of the this romantic series.

GREAT STORY ABOUT MERLIN'S CHILDREN. GO AND BUY THIS BOOK!
HELLLLLLPPPPPPPPP!.......2002-09-26
Warning, warning, this is a (gulp) romance novel. I have in the past vowed never never to read a romance novel. As a retired history teacher and an author and a student of Arthurian legend I picked up the first in the series and was hooked. The historical context is excellent. Then by the second one I realized that the love scenes were pretty much the same thing over and over. (The cover pictures should have alerted me.) By the third I began to skip the sex scenes and go for the story. Hey, I'm a happily married man with children and grandchildren. I know obviously many people go for this sort of thing as bookshelves are full of them. I promise I am not a snob nor am I knocking those who want this sort of thing. But seriously Ms. Evans you have the talent to write interesting, entertaining best sellers by sticking to story development. Our imagination can fill in the rest. I'm of the generation when you could see two lovers, a bed, and then just a curtain blowing in the breeze with musical background and know all that was going on. I give this book five stars for a historical novel that could have been the best and only one for the bosom heaving scenes. That unfortunately is an average of three. As I used to write on some student papers, "C, You can do much better work than this. I have faith in you."
The stunning series continues!!.......2002-01-29
Book 4 - Truan of Monroe was raised as an orphan on the Isle in the Irish Sea, a deadly warrior and a sorcerer of great powers. Also, the son of Merlin, he must pass through a doorway, back in time to the days of Camelot, where Merlin has been banished for all time. Amber follows him, unwilling to lose him, standing at Truan side as he finishes the battle with Malagraine.
Quinn Taylor Evan is a must!!
EXCELLENT SERIES.......2000-09-29
THIS SERIES"MERLINS LEGACY"HAD ME HOOKED FROM THE 1ST PAGE IN BOOK 1.YOU FELT LIKE YOU WERE RIGHT ALONG WITH THE CHARACTERS ,THE DESCRIPTIONS WERE SO REAL.I LIKED THE FACT THAT THE FIGHT AGAINST THE DARKNESS DIDNT OVERSHADOW THE ROMANCE.IT WAS ONLY AT THE END OF THE BOOK THAT THE DARKNESS BATTLED THE LIGHTT.
AMBER AND TRUAN WERE GREAT CHARACTERS.YES,AMBER WASNT AS TOUGH AS VIVIAN AND CASSANDRA BUT IF THEY ALL ACTED THE SAME THE BOOKS WOULDNT HAVE BEEN THAT GOOD.AMBER WENT THROUGH A HORIFIC ORDEAL SO SHE HID IN HERSELF.SHE COULDNT SPEAK AFTER WHAT SHE SEEN HAPPEN TO HER FAMILY.I LIKED THAT TRUAN WAS ALWAYS JOKING AROUND.I LOVED HIM IN BOOOK 3.IME GLAD HIM AND AMBER GOT THEIR OWN STORY.AND IT WAS GREAT THAT TRUAN TURNED OUT TO BE MERLINS SECRET SON.I CANT WAAIT UNTIL THE NEXT BOOK ABOUT MEG.
THIS IS DEFINATELY A SERIES THAT WOULD BE A KEEPER.ONE OF THE ONES THAT YOU HAVE TO TAKE OUT EVERY SO OFTEN TO REREAD.ENJOY!!!1

Book Description
Ninety-five years ago the enormous interplanetary space vehicle, the Pacifica, with a numerous crew, suddenly and inexplicably disappeared as it neared the planet Pluto. None of the probes directed towards the planet after the disaster found any evidence that the vessel and its crew had ever existed. Now, a century later, the wreck of the huge ship has been sighted, lying shrouded in the hazy-black starlight on the Plutonian surface. A shuttle has been fitted for the dangerous journey to the seventh planet, and with three crewmembers aboard, has made the first attempt to reach Pluto since the loss of the Pacifica. As the shuttle approaches the planet, it also "suddenly and inexplicably" disappears and is lost. Although the crew of three is believed to have perished, they have not, and will carry on with their mission: to determine how the Pacifica met its fate. The truth, however, may be found only beyond reason, or even beyond imagination, and the three astronauts may wish that they never sought answer to this great mystery.

Definitely worth a read!.......2006-10-26
Once you delve into the story, you'll want to know how it ends. The first few chapters are slow, but they lay the groundwork for the book. Very imaginative, with special attention paid to detail. It's a story worth reading. I'm not usually a fan of science ficiton, but I definitely recommend this book!
A great work of literary fiction!!!.......2006-04-22
This is a great new novel for those interested in literary fiction. It melds genres of science fiction and mystery into an very interesting tale of three astronauts who find themselves on the planet of Pluto, with everything they need to survive. Interestingly woven into this novel are subtheme, which cause the reader to continuously dig for the deeper meaning of the novel, and there is a deeper meaning! (It reminds me of reading Lord of the Rings in 11th grade, and we had to analyze the book afterwards. I remember one individual commenting that there is no way an author write a book to have all of these different meanings. Now, after reading Tomb of the Devils, I am convinced that authors write in that way. While the book moves slowly during the first three chapters, don't put it down, because once you become hooked, you will be wondering "What is going to happen next". I highly recommend this book, The Tomb of the Devils by Michael D. Christensen, for your reading pleasure

It's a lovely little gem of a book..........2003-12-04
This "easy to digest" little book is stocked with good practical advice. The premise is that our spiritual health is linked to the delicate balance between our physical, emotional and spiritual daily habits. But the advice is very specific and detailed and includes little daily practices that are easy to implement. It explores areas like how we eat, how we assert ourselves, how to gauge whether we are over-stimulated or under-stimulated, and much more. For some reason, the anecdotal examples are engaging and many make references to the work of Edgar Cayce. I practice psychotherapy and have used some of the exercises to help my patients "build muscle" in certain areas. It's a great keeper as well as a great gift. One of the few books in my repetoire that I've read twice.

Excellent Pocket Watch Reference.......2000-03-01
Very nice reference work. Organized chronologically, there are excellent examples from all the major periods up to the late 19th century. Examples incude detailed descriptions of important horological features, biographical details of the maker and excellent photography. The book has both a nice glossary and a good index. This is a fun book just to browse, but also an essential comparative reference.

If you won't do it...Who will? .......2005-05-23
Applause to this little book for giving support to "creatives" bold enough to take the first important steps to self-promote! But being bold is not enough. Effective self-promotion takes planning - lots of planning that includes establishing realistic goals, targeting your audience, and then figuring out how your service or product relates to that audience. Then it takes being "bold," and having the guts to put your plan to work! Clark's book provides the self-confidence many talented people need to get onto the right track. Bottom line is that if we want people to value our creative skills - or invest time or money in our projects - they have to know who we are, what we have accomplished and why they should care! Having talent just isn't enough. (Reviewed by: Marion E. Gold, author of "Personal Publicity Planner: A Guide to Marketing YOU."
A must have for anyone who wants to stand out from the crowd.......2003-05-02
This is quite possibly one of the best self-promotion guides available. As a college senior getting ready to enter the job market, this book has been like a bible to me. It's no longer enough to have the skills employers are looking for, you have to be able to make a strong impression right from the start and this book will show you how to do it. Get Noticed is full of excellent ideas for creative, unique résumés, thank you cards, and notices. Truly an invaluable resource.
Self Promotion Advice by a Super Pro.......2001-11-03
Sheree Clark understands the importance of getting noticed! She is an inspiration to designers and other creatives who need to jump-start their marketing efforts. This book shows that self promotion is not only smart business, it's fun... look at the many ways she shows you to create a buzz. I recommend this book to new and old practitioners, students and anyone who enjoys seeing playful, client-making design.
Get Noticed - A GREAT resource book!.......2001-06-02
As a high school computer graphics teacher, I found this book to be a wonderful addition to our resource library. My students were able to read about a variety of graphic designers and saw great examples of their work. The information from the designers helped my students understand the design process and concept of promoting your work. We contacted some of the designers to get answers to career research questions related to the graphic arts field. Some students also interviewed some of the designers in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who is teaching in this field or planning to become a graphic designer.
