Rebecca Lowe is an upbeat coed, the one who gets straight A's, the one friends and teachers count on. But when she sees No. 6 fumble the football at the Penn-Cornell game, Beck begins to question what would happen if she "fumbled the ball" in her own life. Suddenly filled with uncertainty, she begins to devolve, indulging in a personal odyssey of hard drinking and casual hookups, staying out all night as she tries to find the real Rebecca. But somehow the truth keeps evading her.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful novel.......2006-08-30

I absolutely love this novel. I've read it at least 20 times and I could read it over and over again without tiring. Rachel (if you ever come here to read reviews) why oh why are you not writing any other books? I love your style of writing. I even used examples of it for a class.

4 out of 5 stars :).......2005-12-05

I enjoyed the book. I can't say it tops The Perks of Being A Wallflower, but it comes close. I would say its more of a Perks book, but told by a girl. It shows the nightlife of U of Penn. && What some teenagers go through during college now a days. The book is slow at times, but it shows some great points on how to live life right.

5 out of 5 stars this book is for you IF..........2005-04-04

1. You enjoyed Catcher in the Rye (please, PLEASE tell me you've read it, it's incredible) I read them pretty much in succession accidentally, but both of the characters are similiar in ways. The author uses the same stream of conscience technique, or whatever it's called.

2. You're not looking for a "light, fluffy" read. It's not dark and scary, but certainly not light or fluffy.

3. You want to read an excellent book.

4. Aged 15-21, give or take a couple years.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-06-09

I read this book and found myself in awe. I have never related so closely to any character in any book as I did with Beck in Number 6 Fumbles. I read it in one day because I couldn't put it down. This is a book that all girls who are anxious about entering college should read. I read it after reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower and it is just as good if not maybe a little bit better.

5 out of 5 stars An account of a Person Nature.......2004-04-06

I have never read a book that I have identified with more. Beck feels the same emotions I feel, while doing in a setting I know well. The author does an amazing job of getting into Beck's head and letting the reader know exactly what she is thinking. Her friends all add depth to the central theme and I enjoy how she handles herself in all of her situations. One of the best books I have ever read, I wish the author would continue other books with the same main character- I would be interested in finding out how the remainder of Beck's college career finishes. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever doubted themselves or continues to find bits of themselves in unexpected places.

The Briar King, Greg Keyes's latest elegant entry into the world of high fantasy, lays the groundwork for what promises to be a mesmerizing four-book series--the Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone. Keyes spins his tale in a meticulously crafted fantasy realm on the brink of apocalyptic change. The Briar King, a legend cobbled from children's stories and rural folklore, is waking from his slumber to an unknown but cataclysmic end. Dark agents are afoot in the land, stirring war and edging an ancient prophecy closer to fulfillment. In destiny's path are a king's woodsman, his headstrong lover, a bookworm priest, a cocksure swordsman, and the embattled (from within and without) kingdom of Crotheny. Keyes masterfully intertwines far-off courtly intrigue with the personal quest of the woodsman and his brave companions who seek to unravel the secret of the Briar King before all is lost.

Although The Briar King will suffer the inevitable comparison with George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, it should be said that Keyes's work is no mere rip-off. This is excellent world building, applied with a dark, powerful touch that should convince Martin fans to become Keyes fans, too. --Jeremy Pugh

Book Description

Two thousand years ago, the Born Queen defeated the Skasloi lords, freeing humans from the bitter yoke of slavery. But now monstrous creatures roam the land—and destinies become inextricably entangled in a drama of power and seduction. The king’s woodsman, a rebellious girl, a young priest, a roguish adventurer, and a young man made suddenly into a knight—all face malevolent forces that shake the foundations of the kingdom, even as the Briar King, legendary harbinger of death, awakens from his slumber. At the heart of this many-layered tale is Anne Dare, youngest daughter of the royal family . . . upon whom the fate of her world may depend.

Download Description

In the kingdom of Crotheny, two young girls play in the tangled gardens of the sacred city of the dead. Fleeing an imaginary attacker, the girls -- one of whom is the reckless young daughter of the king -- discover the unknown crypt of the legendary, ancestral queen, Virgenya Dare.

In the wilds of the forest, while investigating the slaughter of an innocent family, king's holter Aspar White weaves his way through a maze of ancient willows -- and comes face-to-face with a monstrous beast found only in folk tales and nightmares. Meanwhile, traveling the same road, a scholarly young priest begins an education in the nature of evil, found festering just beneath the surface of the seemingly peaceful land.

The royal family itself comes under siege, facing betrayal that only sorcery could accomplish. Now-for three beautiful sisters, for a young man made suddenly into a knight, and for a woman in love with a roguish adventurer-a rising darkness appears, shattering what was once certain, familiar, and good. These destinies and more will be linked when malevolent forces walk the land. For Crotheny, the most powerful nation in the world, is shaken at its core. And the Briar King, harbinger of death, has awakened from his slumber.

Imbuing his tale with richness, pathos, action, and passion, Greg Keyes begins an amazing new epic that takes fantasy fiction to a new level. At the heart of the story, Keyes has placed a remarkable young woman, Anne Dare, the youngest daughter of a royal family... and the one person upon whom the fate of this world may depend.

"Starts off with a bang, spinning a snare of terse imagery and compelling characters that grips tightly and never lets up... A graceful, artful tale from a master storyteller."
ELIZABETH HAYDON, AUTHOR OF PROPHECY: CHILD OF EARTH

"The characters in The Briar King absolutely brim with life. It's been a while since I've been this taken with a traditional fantasy novel, but Keyes hooked me from the first page."
CHARLES DE LINT, AUTHOR OF FORESTS OF THE HEART AND THE ONION GIRL

4 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

A decent fantasy. A bit more towards the pragmatic or realistic end of the high fantasy genre, I suppose you could say.

The main character in the beginning being a forester, not a knight, or princess. Those turn up later, though.

Plots to overthrow the queen, nasty magic, mythological monster-gods, all that sort of thing is here. So, a pretty decent read.

5 out of 5 stars my 5 stars.......2007-08-19

I bought this book about 5 months ago and didn't start reading it until earlier this month. As soon as I picked it up I was glad I finally did. The story was so much fun to read, and I enjoyed each of the characters. They are all lovable and believable. The ending kind of fell flat, but that was just because he ended it in a way that put readers in a position where they have to get the second book to find out what really went on. Thas was a little dissapointing, but this one was good enough that I wanted to pick up at least the second one as well. Two thumbs up, all fans of fantasy must read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Well-crafted and entertaining, a fantasy must-read..........2007-07-07

I stumbled on "The Briar King" quite by accident and it's a good thing, I wouldn't have wanted to miss this one.

Greg Keyes introduces his readers to a large and appealing cast of characters and, reminiscient of Martin, presents each new chapter from the perspective of a different member of this cast. The characters are well-written and believable and the story truly revolves around their personalities and lives.

As the seperate character-lines come together, Keyes reveals a fearless grit, proving himself willing to do anything - not even stopping short of killing off major characters - to achieve a level of true tension and suspense not often found in the fantasy genre.

"The Briar King" is among the best works of it's kind and I anxiously look forward to reading the other books in this series. If you are a fan of Martin and Erikson, you will greatly enjoy this series. If you haven't had the opportunity to read the works of these great authors, do yourself a favor and pick them up. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the level of depth and grit fantasy can have.

5 out of 5 stars Alot of Fun.......2007-05-26

I purchased this book after reading the reviews and I really enjoyed this entire series. The characters were diverse and the action is non stop. I can't wait to read more of Mr. Keyes work.

4 out of 5 stars Really glad I found this one . . ........2007-05-01

I've read the reviews that people left for this book and I almost didn't read it. Maybe I'm not as discerning a reader as most but I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I might be convinced to agree that it was not as "deep" as "A Game of Thrones" but it has captivating characters, fantastic action, and an intricate plot. I usually judge a book on the first few chapters and I was hooked before I even read the first few pages. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

protagonist. When he takes on a particular topic he gets in over his
head, as he starts playing with the billonaires.

A dirty conspiracy is going on, and they bring Jack in. He realises

          organlegging of children.

Jack must make the difficult choice of whether to throw in with them, or expose them.

This is not a book to read as if it is still new. This is a book to understand as an alternate history that begins at a point in what is now our past.
It is, simply, amazing, and has held up incredibly well. In today's age of Enron and Halliburton, Bug Jack Barron should be in everyone's collection, and more importantly, in the backs of our minds....

What a fun book. Norman Spinrad certainly has a vibrant mind. I don't much like subversives in real life but the main character in this book is a hoot! Now I have to figure out what else Spinrad has written so I can see if there's something even better. Get it, read it, enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Where are you when we need you Jack Barron.......2002-05-06

...this work was dated, it is dated in its language, it is dated in the world view that it presented, but it is perhaps most dated in presenting a "media" figure who has retained some morality and who refuses to completely sell out to the powers to be.

In a nut shell, a once powerful leader of a left leaning political group has sold out his ideals, to become the host of the best rating current affairs show in America. By chance he is offered the chance to break a story on the most powerful corporate figure in America, a story which could change the fabric of America. Does he break the story, or does he accept the very attractive offer made by the corporate figure - after all wouldn't we all like to forever.

                            Book Description

Women in the Hebrew Bible presents the first one-volume overview covering the interpretation of women's place in man's world within the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament. Written by the major scholars in the field of biblical studies and literary theory, these essays examine attitudes toward women and their status in ancient Near Eastern societies, focusing on the Israelite society portrayed by the Hebrew Bible.

Feminist analysis of the Bible offers clues for the beginnings of gender bias in Western culture. Metaphors and literary persona from those ancient writings permeate Western literature and haunt our collective unconscious. The essays range from feminist strategies for understanding the social world at the time of the production of the Hebrew Bible to interpretations of key female literary figures such as Ruth, Esther, Judith, Sarah, Rachel and Leah, the unnamed daughter of Jephthah, and the unnamed Levite's concubine in the book of Judges.

A case history of five essays presents different perspectives and interpretations of one passage, Numbers 5: 16 - 31, the so-called "Sotah text." These articles show how critical interpretive perspectives are to reading and understanding a biblical text.

Women in the Hebrew Bible offers a stellar selection of the most important writings about the social, cultural and gender codes reflected in Biblical texts.

For too long educators have complained that they do not have the materials to teach courses on women in the Bible, particularly the Old Testament. At long last, Bach has filled the void with a collection that appeals to both educators and the general public. It will be a long time before this volume will outdone.

A perfect reference for the collector with alot of colour photographs. The book tends to concentrate on the later range of glassware from Whitefriars, particularly during the Baxter era. This comes as no surprise since the book was written for the Manchester City Arts Gallery exhibition of Whitefriars glass and there was a great deal of collaboration between the books authors and the late Geoffrey Baxter. The book is quoted as a reference on alot of EBay auctions of Whitefriars glass.

“‘Good design is timeless; so is the information contained in this book.’ That’s what builder Jim Blodgett told me. ...It’s worth a look if you’re planning on building...your own. From design and construction to installation and finishing, it’s all here. ‘There are other glitzier books...’ says Blodgett, ‘but this book deserves a place in the library of anyone who builds even the occasional door.’”—Fine Homebuilding.

5 out of 5 stars Good book on Doors.......2005-07-07

Finding a book about design and construction of doors is hard. Hunting around I found few books...and even fewer of those were even in print.

This book provides the basics of door design and construction. It's not a reference guide but it does provide a great deal of data on the different types of doors and how to build them. It's NOT a step-by-step guide or a book for dummies but it does provide a wealth of information.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2000-01-25

This is exactly what I was looking for. This book gives instructions for making a wide variety of beautiful doors. It covers several types of doors, and gives a number of examples of each type. It illustrates each door with a photograph and a scale drawing. Step-by-step instructions are not always given, but there is enough detail that a non-expert can understand how to build the door. The instructions and illustrations are clear. There are some nice color photographs, too. It also covers door hardware and how to hang a door.

Christy Ferer has written a truly eye-opening guide to achieving major-league style on a tight budget. Her burlap-and-silk curtains, glass-topped tables made from copper plumbing pipe, and feather-trimmed wastebaskets are the kind of accessories that rich people shell out big bucks for (but smart ones can make for next to nothing), and her solutions to the problems of imperfect floors, wall spots, plumbing that needs disguising, and too-small spaces are wildly creative.

1 out of 5 stars This book should have cost a dime.......2001-03-17

I am sorry but this book doesn't even equal magazine content. It is a small book with pictures. Not even the benefit of "how-to" advice. There are books out that are much more beneficial for decorating. Find them!

2 out of 5 stars the title doesn't reflect the content.......1999-05-04

This little book is a disappointment. Not a lot of ideas, not enough pictures. And who is the so-called "style maker," Christy Ferer? Has anyone heard of her?

3 out of 5 stars A couple of ideas, but not as much as I'd hoped.......1997-12-02

I was somewhat disappointed in this book. It had a few specific decorating ideas, and clear enough instructions (there were directions even for the laughably easy ideas, like hanging frames on a wall), but for the most part, the projects didn't really appeal to me. They seemed a little narrow in range--there weren't so many overall decorating ideas, but more "do what I do" projects. The pictures weren't illustrative enough of the projects in some cases (only one pic and page per suggestion), and I didn't like the way it was arranged, with a number of idea pictures, and the instructions at the end of a "chapter." Additionally, though it's supposed to be "Decorating on a dime," there were projects that called for such things as 13 yards of raw silk. My dime is apparently not the same as the author's.

I did get a couple of ideas from this book,-- the end tables made of glass and copper plumber's pipe were clever--but on the whole, I found the book a little fluffy and without substance, and not as inspirational as I expected.

                                        5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!!.......1997-09-24

This decorating book gives practical and innovative ideas to decorate on a budget. There are step-by-step directions and great pictures throughout. The best part is the resource guide, it gives the name and address to contact for information, catalogs and merchandise. Don't pass this one up!!

This book is a wonderful display of what Graphic Designers are doing around the country. Each page highlights a different piece, showing exterior and interior design, as well as, the specs for each project. By flipping through the book, I can break any creative block and move foward on my client's job. Each time I look at the pages of this book, I see something new and exciting. A great tool to solve a difficult design problem, or just to see what other creative minds are doing.
