5 out of 5 stars Mark the Match Boy.......2004-02-26

Mark the Match Boy is the tale of a young, poverty stricken boy who makes it through life with his good morals and honesty. Mark, the main character, lives with a gaurdian who puts him on the streets to sell matches and make profit for the both of them. When Mark finally works up the courage to run away from his temporary home, a string of good fortune suddenly comes upon him. Mark is taken in by a very nice young man by the name of Richard Hunter, the main character from author Horatio Algers previous novel. The two characters seem to go hand in hand with eachother, and are very easy to relate to. Everything seems to go Mark's way, especially the surprise ending which contains a very good twist.
I would, without hesitation, reccomend this book to anyone who enjoys to read. I would also reccomend this book to anyone who has had some bad luck recently. Mark the Match Boy comes with the life lesson, work hard, mind your business, and treat people with respect, and you shall recieve the same. Possibly a little good fortune to go with it.

Mark The Match Boy by Horatio Alger is about a young, poor, orphaned boy forced to make it on his own on the streets. He gets through many obstacles and troubles that come his way with integrity and honesty. Mark shows honesty and integrity throughout the novel. When his friend Ben, who he met on the streets, told him to lie to his customers about the price of his matches to make more money, Mark wouldn't do it. Even if it meant he would go hungry that night,he said he would never accept money if he didn't earn it; that is why he doesn't like begging. Maybe it was fate or pure luck, but Mark catches a break when he learns he has very wealthy extended relatives searching for him. This story will broaden your idea of what is important in life. At the end of the book, you are left with the question; is he just lucky, or is there such thing as fate?
A reason why I liked this book so much was because it was very easy to understand. No matter if you are rich or poor you can appreciate the struggles of being less fortunate or the desire to be wealthy. The characters are realistic and the actions they do are as well. Everything that happens in the book is something that could happen in real life.
Another reason why I liked Mark the Match Boy so much was because it was an easy read. There was no embellishment added to the reading. Because of this, it seemed as though each chapter was its own story. The author speaks to the reader to help them understand and follow the story. Even if you haven't read Ragged Dick, the story that preceded Mark the Match Boy, like I didn't, the author relates back to it so you can understand the entire story better.
I recommend Mark the Match Boy because, Young or old people can be thankful for what they have. This book will open your eyes to what you really need in life and what is really important. After reading this book you will value morality, integrity, and honesty.

5 out of 5 stars Review on Ragged Dick and Mark The Match Boy.......2001-12-15

Reviewer: Dan Gross from New Jersey
Reviews on: Ragged Dick and Mark The Match Boy

Ragged Dick is a story about a boy going from "rags to riches". This story focuses on the life of Richard Hunter, a poor bootblack from New York City. It is a classic story about a young boy without parents who works hard and is honest. The honesty and hard work pays off for him when he does deeds for people in high places.

In Ragged Dick Richard Hunter's honesty brings out the best of people. The wealthy people give him extra attention for his deeds and notice his honesty. For example, he receives money for a shoe and cannot get change so within a few days of the business interaction, he goes to the work place of the man and gives him the change. It also represents respect for his elders.

Story number two of the series is Mark The Match Boy. This too has good morals starting from the youth. This story displays the innocence of a boy coming into the real world. Mark is a boy who is deprived of love. He has no living mother and no family. The purity, which he displays to Richard Hunter, is charming. In this story thievery motivates the conflict. The story display Mark as a by who is similar to The Catcher in The Rye as where Holden Caulfield does not let his sister be corrupted by the real world, Richard is doing this to Mark.

These two stories should be read by not only the youth, but by everyone. They focus on universal morals such as honesty and trust. I can say nothing negative about this book because it is well written, to the point, and very appealing. Not only is it motivating, but also it brings out the best in people and it could change your view on the less fortunate population.

3 out of 5 stars Unlike any history novel.......2001-06-28

I enjoyed reading this book for several reasons, the first being that it was easy reading. I was a junior in college and all the books that I was used to reading were in some sort of foreign language that I could not understand. Ragged Dick was a very simplistic, yet interesting book that I could not put down. The second reason that I enjoyed it was because it talked about real issues during that point in history. Ragged Dick had to struggle in order to get the things that he needed to survive, but in the end it was his manners and his personality that enabled him to prosper as much as he did. I read the book twice and it was still good to me. There are some people that believe that Alger writes about the same things over and over again (depression, poverty) but there are so many other authors that do and still get rave reviews.

i think everyone should read at least one horatio alger book, since he so helped shape american morals at the turn of the last century. his very name is a constant catch-all for the american rags-to-riches machine. i inherited my grandfather's set, and, even though one can call these books formulaic, moralistic rot, they capture a spirit and a time in simplistic, bold language that is readable, entertaining, and a fresh peek at cultural history through a primary source. Add to this that i am a teacher who is having my 8th grade boys read it (yes, in part for a laugh), but they are digging it. More than i could have anticipated. Read one paired with Nathaneal West's "A Cool Million," which parodies alger, for a real bully debate about americanism.

        5 out of 5 stars The saga continues . . ........2007-05-18

After reading some of the other reviews I almost didn't buy this book. But I'm very glad I did. If you're interested in complex characters, a fascinating exploration of differing cultures and what happens when they begin to intermix, and if you enjoy great story telling, then you should definitely read this book.

And unlike some other reviewers, I found the homosexual part of the storyline to be interesting--observing the various relevant characters explore and struggle to deal with beliefs and feelings in light of their corresponding culture's rules and ideas of morality. I have no idea where one reviewer got "our heroine asks another man to sodomize her husband while she watches." That's not in the story like that at all. That makes it sound incredibly crass--and that's not how Ms. Elliott handles it at all.

Some reviewers complained about the lack of plot and slow movement. Yes, it does move a little slow. But if you approach it as a journey to be savored for what it is, I think you'll enjoy it. I look forward to reading the other 2 books in the series. And if you like this kind of story/series, I strongly recommend that you read the "Warprize" 3-book series by Elizabeth Vaughan. Happy reading!

2 out of 5 stars I hate to say it, but it was a little disappointing...........2004-10-11

Althought Jaran is now one of my all time favorites, I was a tad bit let down by An Earthly Crown. Granted, all these reviews are a matter of opinion, I had super high expectations for this book, and was a little confused about the twist of events in it.
It continues the saga of Tess and her husband Ilya on the primative planet of Rhui. Her brother, who is in high power and needs her with him as his only heir, decides he needs to go investigate why she isn't willing to return, not to mention do some investigations of his own. He decides to bring with him a group of Actors who's leader has some cultural studies he would like to test thru' theatre. I can't get the ultimate reason why the great duke, Tess's brother would allow such a thing, especially when the planet is so primitive, and he hasn't been there in so long. A group of Actors! Why not scientists, or Anthropologists who hid their true intentions of learning about their culture to keep it from being modernized? Maybe I missed something there.
Also, I was so excited about reading about Tess and Ilya's new love, and this half of the two book sequel really didn't get into it except you discover that Ilya has had a homosexual past and is fighting repressed emotions for his ex-lover. Not that I am a homophobic or anything, its just that discovering that this warlord who is conquering the planet, who fought so hard to win Tess's heart turning out gay, kindof took out SOME of the masculinity out of him, and his love for Tess almost seemed divided. Not to mention I felt insecure 'for' Tess when she was dealing with her feelings with Ilya perhaps still having those feelings, but Then they end up in a threesome and that kind of crossed the line for me. It was like hearing your husband still loved his ex and then you guys got together to solidify that it is ok. I personally didn't feel that that would be the way to go, but HEY, that's me... I ended up flipping thru it pretty quick, anticipating the ending to my own disappointment, becuz' I hated to face my feelings, but I really didn't have that big of an interest to get the next book.
Jaran is still in my favorites, and always will be. Perhaps in the future I will venture to see what happens to Tess and Ilya and all them folks, but right now I have moved onto other worlds. And Kate Elliot is still an amazing author. With all reviews you gotta decide for youself if they're helpful or not, and make your decision to read the book on your own personal thoughts and tastes.

4 out of 5 stars Continuing the Jaran story.......2004-04-23

This book is rather different in style from the first of the four Jaran novels, but I can't really agree with the reviewers who said it was weaker.

The basic setting for the series is that humans are a subject race in a domineering, but relatively benign, empire under the highly hierarchic alien Chapalii. Charles Soerenson, the only human to hold a high position in the Chapalii empire, is secretly using his position to prepare a revolt against the Chapalii. Meanwhile, his sister and heir, Tess, becomes stranded on the planet Rhui, populated by technologically backwards humans who Soerenson has ordered, with the consent of the Chapalii, are not to be aware of the existence of other populated worlds and advanced technology. While there, she falls in love with a Genghis Khan like figure, Bakhtiian, who has united the nomadic and matriarchal Jaran under his leadership and is preparing a campaign of conquest against the settled peoples of Rhui. The Jaran seem to be based roughly on the Russian/Mongolian cultures of the Russian steppes, and Jaran names are recognizably Russian.

In this novel, second in the series a few years ater the end of "Jaran", Charles Soerenson is visiting the Jaran along with some of his aides and a troupe of Earth actors, with the goals of exploring the Chapalii monument that Tess discovered in the prequel and persuading Tess to return with him. A final goal is gradually furthering the evolution of Jaran and Rhuian culture, with the expectation that they will eventually recontact galactic society. The visit takes place against the backdrop of Bakhtiaan's continuing campaign of conquest.

The actors, unmentioned by the other reviewers here, are central to the story, because their objective of using the language-based art of Shakespeare and classic theater to communicate across linguistic and cultural barriers reflects the novel's theme of how different cultures, and people from them, understand and misunderstand each other. This is also developed in a romance between an actress in the troupe and a Jaran warrior that progresses in spite of their lack of a common language, and a sometimes comic subplot of an arrogant young nobleman sent as a diplomat to the Jaran from a deeply patriarchal feudal kingdom, who is so shaped by his own culture that he is incapable of even understanding how little he understands the Jaran.

A related theme that is developed by suggestion in both this book and the prequel, perhaps for a more direct exploration before the series concludes, is the similarity between Charles's rule over Rhui and the Chapalii rule over Earth and mankind that Charles is in rebellion against.

The story generally involves far less action, and a bit less sex, than the first installation. It does feature a plot of repressed homosexual attraction that reaches an unpersuasive climax, so to speak, in a threesome. But in general, Elliott is elaborating the ideas and characters of the first volume and preparing for crises to come in future installations. The resultant novel some will find boring, but I thought that the characters were interesting enough to maintain an installment that is a bit thin on action.

One problem I did have is that there are really too many minor characters and substories going here, particularly among the Jaran. This book may have more Russian names in it than "War and Peace", which makes it hard to follow some elements of the story.

        2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-09-21

The first Jaran book was excellent and the Crown of Stars books got me hooked (other than book 4). As always, Kate's writing style is enjoyable, but this time the plot is a bore. Basically a silly romance, starting with the tough guy marrying the beautiful blond he hardly knows (only to run off to battle), and culminating with the a menage a trois between the hero, heroine and hero's ex-gay lover. Kate says male-female role reversal was a key part of her first book, and the woman with two men seems a natural extension of that, but the book became too engrossed in this and the need for an interesting plot (as in Jaran) sort of fell by the wayside.

        1 out of 5 stars Sophomore jinx.......2003-02-13

The first novel in the jaran series was terrific. I had high hopes for the second. Too bad it's such a weak effort. I'm not sure I want to bother with the third, as this one was seriously downhill from the first. I have to agree in part with the somewhat homophobic reviewer. What was an entertaining view into an alternate culture turned into a silly "slash 'em and screw 'em" pulp novel.

I suppose Elliot may be trying for an effect similar to Robert Heilein's "Time Enough for Love", but she does not come close. Instead, Bahktiian becomes a Caligula like figure and Tess turns into "Honan, the Licentous". Ridiculous.

BTW, don't even try to blame the harsh reactions on male insecurity. My wife read the book before I did and told me she hated the ending. I have to agree. It's a bad turn to an already strained storyline.

Even though I don't agree with Lazarus Long's actions at the end of "Time Enough for Love", his character was still real. "Earthly Crown" is an easily disposed of tabloid with no lasting value.

5 out of 5 stars PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION AFFECTS THE HEALING OF OUR WORLD.......2002-03-02

This is what I call a "wow" book! It is filled with practical insights of self-acceptance and cosmic horizons. To read it, is to pray it. No matter where you are at in your spiritual journey, you are called forth to the more - to letting go into your best self. Along with quantum challenges, it inspires one to believe that the whole (even of oneself) is more than the parts. Fiand is obviously a pray-er and a healer. While alluding to personal crises and growth, her work could be even more stimulating with the actual sharing of her story.

5 out of 5 stars In depth prayer is a cosmic connection and a healing power........1999-08-06

While presuming a certain readiness to receive Barbara Fiand's deeply personal and strikingly cosmic sharing of her experience of prayer and healing, this book also calls the the reader into a holy and personal prayer relationship with God. In an interdisciplinary manner, Fiand draws the reader into a view of reality that manifests the power of thought and of prayer and the healing of both personal and cultural brokenness. The marriages of the "sacred" and the "secular," the past and the future, the time and space dimensions give birth to an awareness of the interconnectedness of all of life in God. I personally experienced a call to a deeper prayer life that draws all into a consciousness that moves to health and wholeness and holiness. For the serious reader and the brave of heart, I highly recommend this scholarly and personal sharing of the life and prayer of the author.

Featuring the innovative recipes that have been added to Legal’s menu during the past fifteen years (since the first Legal Sea Foods Cookbook was published), this new cookbook covers not only the traditional gold standards (Smoked Bluefish Paté, Clam Chowder) but also contemporary dishes such as Crabmeat with Morel Mushrooms, Spicy Fried Grouper with Jalapeño Mayonnaise, and Bluefish in Kale and Tomato Sauce. Regional specialties, such as Hog Snapper Pepe (from the Boca Raton branch) and Baltimore Crab Cakes, are also included.
In addition to the vast selection of main dishes, there are appetizers (Spicy Crab Cakes, Smoky Mackerel Spread, Mussels au Gratin), salads (Shrimp Tabbouleh, Crabmeat and Mango Salad, Lobster and Israeli Couscous Salad), pasta and rice dishes (Linguine with Littlenecks; Salmon with Asparagus and Ravioli; Risotto with Shrimp, Celery, and Peppers), soups and sandwiches (Shellfish Gumbo, Fish Chowder, Grilled Swordfish Tacos), vegetables and side dishes (Speckled Butter Bean Casserole, Onion Strings, Chipotle Sweet Potato Mash), and desserts (Key Lime Pie, Blueberry and Peach Crumble, Mango and Strawberry Shortcake).
The New Legal Sea Foods Cookbook also provides an overview of the full range of fin fish and shellfish (from bass to wolffish, clams to squid) available today and the best cooking techniques for each type—whether it is baking, broiling, frying, poaching, sauteing, grilling, oven-steaming, or microwaving—as well as how to distinguish wild from farm-raised fish. There is complete advice on how to tell if fish is fresh, how to store it once you bring it home, how to prepare it, and how to make safe and delicious use of the leftovers. Much more than a cookbook, this is the ultimate sourcebook from America’s seafood specialists.

2 out of 5 stars Not the recipes I'd expected..........2007-06-10

I lived in the Boston area for over 10 years and went to Legal's many times for quick late-night meals (clam chowder or a fish sandwich to go) as well as for more elaborate meals on special occasions. I really liked the place a lot. So when I found out they had a cookbook, I thought it would be great to replicate some of the dishes that I'd really liked at home, esp. now that I'm living on the West Coast. The names of some of the favorites were there: Crab and Artichoke Hushpuppies, Baked Scrod, etc. But when I looked closely at these recipes once I bought the book, I realized that they are NOT the dishes that they served at the restaurants. The Baked Scrod at Legal's has buttery herb breadcrumbs, yet the cookbook describes it as a dish that's scrod, baked in butter and topped with lemon (and that's it - the recipe is really, really short). The Crab and Artichoke hushpuppies recipe doesn't have artichokes in the ingredients list. I'm not sure why artichokes are listed in their name then? And I remember there being artichokes in the version I've eaten at the restaurants. The key lime pie at the restaurants is somewhat like a light, creamy key lime cheesecake with a graham cracker crust, yet the recipe in the book is the standard more jelly-like key lime pie with a standard floury pie crust. I was really confused about how they could claim in the inner flap that this was "the complete guide to buying, cooking, and enjoying seafood - with more than 200 recipes - from the restaurant that knows it best." I guess they meant that the guide was from the restaurant but not the recipes? Overall, there's lots of advice on how to select and cook seafood and I'm sure it's all very useful to people who want to know more about that, but the book didn't serve the purpose I bought it for - to replicate favorite dishes at home.

              5 out of 5 stars Yummy food...easy to follow.......2005-09-28

The food from here is so good and the recipies are pretty easy to follow with lots of background information on types of fish and how to purchase seafood.

Along with the Italian Food of the North End, this restaurant offered some of my favorite food on a recent vacation to Boston. Unique recipes, with delicious blends of flavors, fancy yet casual, it is a wonderful place to eat. Their slogan is the reassuring "If it isn't fresh, it isn't legal." While I'm no stranger to well made fresh seafood, the regional touches were wonderfully noticeable and appreciated.

The book beings with a brief history of the restaurant that began in Cambridge in 1968, and Legal's hints on selecting and storing fish, a fairly thorough description of fin fill and shellfish, and a briefer description of preferred basic cooking techniques at "Legal." While these section sometimes reads a bit too much like an advertisement for the restaurant, there is some fascinating "inside" consumer-friendly facts and anecdotes about selecting and preparing fish-it does show the complexities of ope4ratingf a restaurant and has a lot of good information on health-related matters (although mercury in some types of fish is not mentioned.

Recipes are easy to follow and vary in their complexity: I saw one shrimp dish with only 5 ingredients (excluding spices) and, on the facing page, one with twelve. Although there is no information on preparation time, these are often misleading without a staff of five to help you) There is a tremendous variety in the types of fish, and the courses in which they are used. In fact, there are over 200 recipes divided into appetizers, main courses, leftovers, salads, pasta and rice dishes with seafood, soups and sandwiches, vegetables and side dishes, sauces and coatings, and even fish desserts!. There are some wonderful whimsical line drawings by "The New Yorker's" Edward Koren, and a useful index. You can buy heftier and more expert-oriented fish cookbooks, but this is one of the more entertaining, creative, and useful ones. Recommended as a great gift for any afishionado.

5 out of 5 stars Legal Sea Foods has a Cookbook! WOW !.......2004-05-21

I traveled to Washington, DC and also to Baltimore, MD and many people said "If you want great seafood-go to Legal Sea Food!" I tried it when I was in Baltimore and LOVED IT! The Cream of Crab soup was utterly divine! I worked for sometime at Red Lobster in my younger days-so I know good seafood! Buy the book-it will give you insight into making excellent dishes at home!

5 out of 5 stars A bonanza of information and recipes.......2003-09-24

Berkowitz, owner of Legal Sea Foods and Doerfer, who coauthored the 1988 Legal Sea Foods cookbook, offer a volume packed with detailed information on choosing and cooking seafood, including health, safety and technique advice and an alphabetized guide to fish and shellfish. Clearly written recipes offer serving, presentation and variation tips and run the gamut from classics like Clam Chowder and Boiled Lobster and Baked Haddock to Stir-Fried Monkfish with Beans and Lemongrass, and Arctic Char Burritos.

The book is organized traditionally, from appetizers to dessert and includes chapters for leftovers (fish cakes, crepes, latkes and more), soups and sandwiches and sauces and coatings (Tartar, Sesame Seed Avocado, Mango Salsa, Cracker Crumb topping).

Most of the recipes are simple but innovative, like Steeped Shrimp with Fruit, Broiled Tuna with Tomatillos and Peppers, Citrus Soft-Shell Crabs. Some are luxurious - Crabmeat with Morel Mushrooms or Lobster Edgardo (with scallops, wine and cream), while others are more earthy, like Mackerel Stew, Baked Cod Parmesan, Oyster and Mushroom Casserole, and still others are just sublimely uncomplicated, like Summer Flounder in Butter Sauce or Marinated Grilled Shrimp or Seafood Seviche.

Wonderfully complete, this is a book for everyone. It assumes no knowledge, but never talks down to the reader. The design is attractive, with illustrations by Edward Koren, the advice is crisp and invaluable, and the range of dishes is extensive.

I once worked conveniently down the street from a Legal's Restaurant, which was a good thing, because everyone who visited me had to make a pilgrimage to the mecca of seafood restaurants.

I have to admit, their fish and chowder was excellent So if you are far from a Legal's, you can reproduce some of their famous fish recipes with this book, which I might add costs about the same as a lunch there.

Yes, the clam chowder is in here. So is important advice on how to store fish you buy. You won't be able to reproduce everything at Legal's, and if your local fishmonger has less than top quality fish, the flavor will also suffer. Still, a good book on fish and if you only could have one book on fish cooking, this is a good choice.

Styrene novelties were the toy of choice during the late thirties and forties in the United States. Even World War II did not dampen the American public's love affair with these inexpensive colorful objects. The war ended but the romance continued, with all sorts of styrene plastics--candy containers, banks, party favors, holiday decorations, baby toys, stocking stuffers, partyware, and kitchen decorations. The list marches on. This fun book is about those plastic novelties that flourished at the end of the Art Deco era. Charlene Pinkerton gives collectors and dealers plenty to see, in a photo-packed book of more than 600 color prints, a price guide, and enough information on these wonderful collectibles to satisfy everyone!

                      Book Description

This extraordinary book is your guide to the graphic blood that flows in the visual arteries of New York. Graffiti, posters, neon lighting, street art, colour schemes, perspectives and forms are just some of the graphic elements collated as inspiration in this hip sourcebook for graphic designers and visual creatives.

The book is organized around structure, communication, problem solving and originality - all problems that drive design itself - but with the raw edge of organic development. Design is site specific; the flavour of the city is tasted through the vast variety of its visual elements that can be called graphic design in its widest sense.

With its partner volume on Tokyo (ISBN 2880467683), this title emphasizes the site-specific nature of design as a city's lifeblood, contrasting east and west.

In it's 80 pages, this tiny little book (three inches tall) gives a great introduction to the work of the celebrity we know as Tom Cruise. This is terrific for trivia buffs! There are great photos, a summary of his career so far, and a few quotesby Tom and those close to him. It's a nice treasure for the Hollywood junkie.

                      5 out of 5 stars A GOOD READ.......2001-05-29

I read the book and thought that it was very well done, it had a very captivating plot, and it went into great description about one of hollywoods best actors, Tom Crusie, how is roll playing Lestat De Lioncourt, affected his life, to his greatest, most horrifying moments in his life, truly unique, with a profound endearment, that with-holds the human heart in an iron cage. I loved it, and thought it over, and said, it was one of the most interesting reads, I had ever read, and now, Tom Cruise is one of my favorite actors, with his characters, and his motives, and his thoughts, about his children, and his wife. In this book, not only will you find, Tom, but all of us, locked together in hatred, with a sadness, of hope, and pain, with this pain, we can see, not only the truth, but the harsh fiction with-in our lives. Tom Crusie is a very deep person, spiritualy, with his thoughts, and his great chararcter, you will fall in love with his movies, and his whole look upon life, death, and truth, to the great subjects of fiction, in this world. The plot, already holds a keene fasination to most people, and with its stories about Tom, makes it more captivating, I really loved, and I thought it was sad too. How his life affected alot of people, not only mine, but others as well, I loved the book, as much I do Tom Cruise.
