5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book.......2001-09-20

This book was the first book from the DragonLance series and I was captivated by the stories within the book. The different stories offers something for everyone because if you do not like one story you can go to another I however, would not recommend this because they are all great stories. This book got me hooked on the series and soon after finishing it I bought 12 other volumes of DragonLance books.

5 out of 5 stars Praise.......1999-11-24

I thought this book was superbly written. Unlike some of the other reviewers I liked all the stories in this book. My favorites were The Notorious Booke of Starres and Peculiar Artifact. The Booke of Starres was just superbly written, and the peculiar artifact is one of the few stories that shows a kender as something other than a fool or comic relief.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......1999-08-28

this was an excellent boo

3 out of 5 stars Most of the stories really good, some were bad.......1999-04-09

Though I haven't read the entire book, I have read most of the stories in it. The reason that I didn't finish it is because some of the stories, like "A Most Peculiar Artifact" were either stupid or boring. Most of them, like "The Sword of Tears" and "Island of the Night", were really good.

3 out of 5 stars A well-rounded anthology.......1998-10-02

R&O is a fine read for fans of the Dragonlance world. There are good stories and bad. Roger Moore rules as always with one of his gnome stories. Weis/Hickman disappoints me a little with a cliché-ridden story about Caramon helping a handicapped war-veteran. Jeff Grubb - who usually writes excellent stuff - disappoints a little as well with a thin story about a con man and an out-of-place demon. This said, R&O contains a lot of OK stories describing various lots in life in the fifth age. Moore for Emperor!

This boook was, simply put, amazing. I read it in one fantasy filled night. The characters (my favorite is Colt) were so real that I could almost taste them. I nearly cried multiple times, especially when Colt was being the sweetie-pie that he is. I only wish that there were men like Colt in this world that I could wrap my arms around. In any case, I know I will be reading more by Denosky.

    The Honorable Cowboy: Colt Wakefield

His Profile: intrepid, impassioned, and irresistable

His Soft Spot: his newly discovered daughter

All it took was one glance at the toddler in Kaylee Simpson's arms for Colt to know the two-year-old was his. Duty demanded that he do right by mother and child so he swept them off to his ranch to set up house. Trouble was, spending day and night in such close proximity with beautiful Kaylee made the rodeo heartthrob realize that she still stoked his passion and commandeered his dreams. Although Kaylee resisted her attraction to him with all her might, he knew he'd do almost anything to win her trust and claim her as his own, once and for all.

4 out of 5 stars Just call him the Sherman-ator!.......2004-03-18

Mr. Braun, the new gym teacher, has the biggest muscles anyone has ever seen. After another freak accident with the DITS, Jake Sherman switches bodies with Mr. Braun. Jake has switched with his geeky science teacher before, but this time he actually likes who he switched bodies with. Jake really wants to stay Mr. Braun forever. But there's a problem. Those huge muscles are causing him to be a real idiot.

This is one of the best HELP! I'm Trapped books, but not the best. There were more funny parts than not funny parts. What was strange about this book was that Jake used his gym teacher powers to be really mean--especially to his friends. I guess Jake thought that he would be Mr. Braun forever and could do whatever he wanted. Anyway, this is a great book if you're looking for a short and funny read. I read it an hour.

5 out of 5 stars Help! I'm trapped in my gym teachers body.......2002-10-25

I like how Mr. Braun stuck up for Jake when he tricked Barry Dunn and his friends. Jake's friend's Josh and Andy got in there and were as loyal as friends get to the very end. I think this book is excellent! At first I thought it was a true story! You did a great job Todd Strasser! ...

      5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!!---DEFINITELY AN ORIGINAL PLOT!!!.......2002-07-16

I love reading children's books. I love the most to read books with original plots that are unthinkable, yet innocent.

This book qualifies. The story line is so outrageoous, there is no way you will be able to guess what will happen next. And Todd Strasser is VERY FUNNY.

You won't regret reading this book!!

5 out of 5 stars Help! I'm Trapped in my Gym Teacher's Body.......2001-04-18

Very Good! Very funny! I think the way Todd Strasser made it so reasonable for kids is great. He made it so funny and easy to understand, that it is reasonable for anyone. I think this book is one of the best books I have ever read in my life. This book is about a 12 year old boy, Jake, who has 2 best friends, Josh and Andy, who like to fool around and get in trouble. But when Jake switches bodies with his new big muscular gym teacher, it can get worse and it can get funny. The best part was when the gym teacher's girlfriend went out with Jake instead of Bruno(the gym teacher)! I really enjoyed this book and so will you.

4 out of 5 stars Help! I'm Trapped in the Gym Teacher's Body.......2000-09-22

It's the bomb! I like this book because the gym teacher is always sticking up for Jake and tells Jake to stick up for Billy Dunn. The book is funny in how they switch bodies. I like the explosion; it was how they switched bodies. It is really neat. Justin Kelley, Grade 4.

5 out of 5 stars Review by 11 year old Singaporean boy.......2007-06-19

This is the best book that I have read so far. I think that this book is very interesting as reading about Jake switching bodies with the very person that he dislikes, Mr. Dirksen, his science teacher amuses me. Also, this story is about a boy and a teacher who after switching bodies with each other understand how the other person feels.

I wonder how it would feel like if I was trapped in the body of someone that I do not like. After reading this book, I would think twice about making fun about someone just incase I switched bodies with him and suffer what everyone has been doing to him. I learned that everyone has feelings and we should treat them with the same amount of respect they treat us with too.

Overall, I feel that this book is suitable for people with good imaginations especially kids. If I could recommend this book to anyone, I would recommend it first to my classmates.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourites.......2006-08-08

This was one of my favourite paperbacks when I was younger. Todd Strasser did a great job mixing "weird science" storylines with sympathetic young adult situations, and the result is an entertaining story that could've been a great TV movie or series (Strasser probably thought so too, and "Help!" became the first in a series of books). A student switches bodies with his teacher, and gains a new perspective on how things are as an adult. If you like this one, also check out "Abe Lincoln for Class President," and "Please Don't Be Mine, Julie Valentine."

      5 out of 5 stars Help! I'm Trapped In My Teacher's Body.......2005-12-06

Help! I can't get enough of this book! I can't help it, but this book is really good. I can't put this book down for a second.
" Help I'm Trapped in my Teacher's Body,"
is about a kid named Danny. He's never listening in class. He's always talking to his friends that sit behind him. Then he got punished. He just had to carry a box to his teacher's house. His teacher was making a Body Switcher and Danny was helping.
What I say about this book is that it was the best book I've ever read. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes funny books.

      1 out of 5 stars Not a good portrayal.......2005-08-23

I didn't think this was a good story at all. The teacher is painted in a very poor light and negatively in all aspects, and there is no "equal" balance of what could be learned from both sides. The potential is there for a great story, but I found it boring and just mildly funny. There is disrespect evident between teacher and student, coming from both sides. Disrespect and name calling is treated as "cool" and acceptable from both teacher and student. Would not recommend to any readers. There's just better literature out there.

      5 out of 5 stars What a book!!!.......2005-03-08

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be trapped in your teacher's body? Have you ever thought it was possible to switch bodies? Well, in the book Help I'm Trapped in My Teachers Body it is possible. Jake, the main character of the book, switches bodies with his dorkey teacher Mr.Dirksen. Jake has a major problem Mr.Dirksen doesn't want to switch back to normal, but Mr.Dirksen is the only person who knows how to operate the machine that changed them. By the end of the book Jake changes his attitude for Mr.Dirksen because he now knows how it feels to be a hated teacher that gets treated badly and made fun of all the time. Jake is scared to get fired because he knows for sure Mr. Dirksen will not switch back because without his job he is nothing. Jake knows for certain that Mr.Dirksen likes single teacher Ms. Rogers so, Jake flirts with her to make Mr.Dirksen switch back.

The hidden message in this book is all people have feelings and you have to be careful not to hurt them. The conflict of this book is Jake verses Mr.Dirksen. I give this book five stars for great excitement and recommend this book to readers that go crazy for excitement.

            5 out of 5 stars Soulmaking - Practical Philosophy.......1999-08-08

With Soulmaking, GROSSO at first sight seems to offer an exotic approach towards the enigma of soul, which is far from being solved to date, as he stresses repeatedly. The term "soulmaking" is not the invention of a modern author trying to catch the reader with a smart book title. The poet JOHN KEATS used this term to describe the process which CARL GUSTAV JUNG, whose ideas GROSSO obviously admires a great deal, later called "Individuation". KEATS explained "soulmaking" as quoted by the author on page 31: "There may be intelligences or sparks of divinity in millions - but they are not Souls till they acquire identities, till each one is personally itself." According to GROSSO, both active and passive experience is the essence of soulmaking, especially but not exclusively in the course of self-reflection, philosophy, arts and paranormal or exceptional human experiences (EHE) which can force us to take a look over the fence of our inherited materialistic world view - as happened to the author more than once, as he tells us confidently in the many anecdotes of his private and professional life. As RAYMOND MOODY puts it in his short foreword, "This book is a good read". GROSSO succeeded in gripping me with his witty and lively writing style and the frankness with which his anecdotes are presented. Leaving the safe terrain of merely reproducing facts, the author has the courage to share some of the most intimate incidents of his life with the reader, who will feel personally invited to take part in the author's adventure of soulmaking. If GROSSO can be blamed for anything, it is not for fear of the public's reactions. Although they are not a main theme of this book, psychedelic experiences are addressed as possibilities to learn about the creative powers of the unconscious, which serve as a "Soul-Magnifying Glass", as suggested by the title of the respective chapter. However, the author is well aware of the reverse side of the coin: "Although scholars have studied sacred plants in shamanism and ancient religions, the history of drugs and the soul has yet to be written. (...) The complexion of things has changed nowadays. The demonic side of drugs seems to have taken over. The worst nightmares about drug abuse are coming true." (p. 71) The interface of psychedelic experience and the nature of a hypothetical afterlife may become clear by going back to the philological roots of the term itself: "In Greek it ('psychedelic') means soul clarifying. It occurs in a Platonic dialogue (...) where it is used to describe what happens to souls at death. Death, said Socrates, clarifies the soul; it reveals the hidden corruption, the secret deeds of unjust men who in life hid behind rank and prestige; it also reveals the beauties and virtues of just souls. Death, in short, is the ultimate 'psychedelic'." (p. 73) Now, what about the author's personal view of Life after Death? This is indeed the question which led the author to start the journey of his own soulmaking: Is death "the final stumbling block to soulmaking? The main point of this book is that to answer such questions, we should look to experience, not to 'the authorities'." (p. 163) After all, GROSSO remains cautious: "Given my own experiences - and I know I'm not alone on this score - I can say there are no grounds for being cocksure about what death is." (ibid.). It is not difficult, however, to discover GROSSO's optimism in this respect by finding him occasionally pointing to the evidence gathered from other sources to date. As far as his puzzling personal experiences are concerned - which may too readily be labelled as "paranormal" (precognitive dreaming, veridical out-of-the-body-experiences, haunting, etc.) by some readers - one might expect that the accounts are followed by the narrator's interpretations or even claims of what "really" lies behind the respective incident. The critical reader will be delighted to find that just the opposite is the case. The philosopher GROSSO never seems content with final explanations and does not get tired of reflecting arguments for and against his own suspicions, always reminding the reader that solving metaphysical problems is not necessarily the aim and purpose of soulmaking, we should rather deal with them in a honest, open-minded and self-critical way. Soulmaking is a fine autobiographical and thus personal contribution by MICHAEL GROSSO, who seems to be well aware of his responsibility as a writer on such a controversial and difficult subject. (This review is published in the debut issue of the HUMAN NATURE magazine, Sept. 1999)

            Book Description

Nestled at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Santa Fe has the spirit of the Native American, Spanish, Mexican and Anglo-American settlers who built it - and an exciting cuisine to match. Today's hottest Santa Fe chefs are incorporating the region's staple ingredients - rice, beans, squash and chiles - into mouthwatering new dishes. The Food of Santa Fe offers the best of New Mexico's traditional dishes and a sampling of today's cooking innovations. Introductory essays provide the historical and geographical context of the cuisine, and a glossary of unusual ingredients and illustrated how-to sections are also included.

Man! This is a GOOD cookbook. I have many many good cookbooks and this one is just to die for. The recipes are gorgeous to look at and even better to eat. One word of caution, if you are not an experienced home chef and a fairly adventerous eater, tread cautiously. These are restaurant-level creative funky recipes with lots of unusual ingredients. If this is just your speed (as it is mine) then go for it!

            5 out of 5 stars A homerun... but what's new!.......2002-02-09

Dave and Nancy are gods in the hot and spicy food business. As usual you can expect concise information along with mouth-watering recipes. As host of the television series "The Sonoran Grill" and author of 4 cookbooks, I know good food writing when I see it and this is as good as southwest cooking gets. Just click on "All Books" by either Dave or Nancy and you'll see why they are so qualified to write this important cookbook and why I must add a copy of it to my collection

5 out of 5 stars It's like being in Santa Fe -- at all the best places........1998-08-24

Food in Santa Fe is a major part of the style and ambiance of the city. New Mexican regional products, especially chilis and corn, and southwestern cooking styles, everything from barbeque to Tex-Mex to authentic regional Mexican and Indian cooking, are strong influences. But Santa Fe has everything from tiny cantinas with home style New Mexican cooking to 5 star restaurants where New Mexico is an influence, but suave professionalism, integration of tastes, and high presentation is the norm.

The Food of Santa Fe takes you there, telling you about the food, the style, and the best restaurants. We've been to Santa Fe many times and reading the book is like taking a brief (and teasing) visit. I have to head for the kitchen and check out the chili supply. It's also a good way to prepare for a trip -- briefing you on what to expect, what to look for, and where to find the very best examples.

There are many Santa Fe cookbooks -- those from Mark Miller and the Coyote Cafe being the best known -- but this is perhaps a better overview, and a very pretty book to read.

We expect to buy copies for our Santa Fe loving friends as Christmas gifts.

              Book Description

Finally. A Good Book On Building a Dulcimer.

How does $29.95 sound versus $900.00 or $1,500.00? If cost is a consideration and you enjoy a good project, this book is for you! Full of photographs, illustrations, patterns, clear instructions and helpful advice, this book guides you step-by-step through the crafting of a professional model 15/14 hammered dulcimer with a floating soundboard. Randy "Ardie" Davis takes you through the secrets of building a hammered dulcimer that will look beautiful and sound even better. Materials, tools, suppliers, resources - all are covered in this thorough and easy-to-follow book.

Over 185 pages of clear, proven instructions, incorporating Ardie's unique "Maker's Notes," "Maker's Hints," and "Maker's Cautions" that provide the reader with Ardie's years of woodworking experience. Ardie covers all of the tools used to make the dulcimer, and points out which are "nice to have" and which are essential. He provides a brief description of why and how each tool is used.

Ardie's illustrations are comprehensive and easy to understand. He leaves nothing to chance or guesswork when it comes to explaining each step. From cutting the first board to stringing and tuning - he covers it all!

An essential part of building a hammered dulcimer is the use of accurate patterns. Included in the book are pre-printed patterns for Pin Blocks, Treble Bridge, Bass Bridge, the Side Bridges, and a beautiful design for the sound hole. Simply tear them out, cut and tape together, and go to work!

              How This Book Is Different

              * Other books exist on the craft of making Hammered Dulcimers, but they either give the subject short shrift, or are too complicated for non-engineers. Here are some good reasons to buy this book!

              * In addition to his woodworking skills, Ardie has a Masters degree in English. This book is well-written and easy to understand. The text is clear and concise.

              * The drawings and illustrations are designed for the amateur woodworker, not for engineers. They are helpful and easy to follow.

              * The plan for this dulcimer is complete but not overly complicated. Ardie breaks the plan down into manageable tasks.

              * The book is up-to-date with the latest information on hammered dulcimer suppliers, resources and publishers - including Web sites, emails, and other contact information.

              * The book contains a complete list of tools used to build the dulcimer - with explanations of how and why they are used - and helpful descriptions of all materials required.

              * This book is available in a special CD-ROM version that has 'QuickLink' hyperlinks to quickly take you to all Chapters and Headings, and to 50+ Dulcimer Resource and Supplier Web sites and Emails on the World Wide Web. All pages can be printed as needed for use in your shop!

              * All registered book owners will receive access to a special Web page containing on-line resources and suppliers, helpful information, additions, corrections, FAQs, photographs and more!

              * A special Foreword by master builder and performer, Mr. Dana Hamilton!

                4 out of 5 stars Excellent AutoCAD 3D book.......2005-09-18

I am an engineer and a part-time instructor of AutoCAD at a community college. This is an excellent book on the subject of AutoCAD 3D. I have many books that I use for reference when making lesson plans. While it could be argued which book is best overall, this one would rank near the top no matter its competition. Besides, this book offers things others do not. For instance, it gives an example on how to draw the complex curves of a boat hull using surface modeling techniques (this concept can be translated into automobile fenders or the like). It also shows one how to draw a solid model spring. These are things many other books just don't cover and don't offer enough knowledge on so that one could figure it out on one's own.
The book also comes with a CD with examples on it, which is very helpful.
If you are looking to buy just one AutoCAD 3D book, it would not be a mistake to buy this one. The list price is pretty steep, but this book can be found at discount book stores (I got it for under $20.00).

5 out of 5 stars Great way to learn.......2001-06-22

I bought this book with little 3D experience, hoping it would help guide me. I work in a small company and I am the only CAD user, so there isn't any help in the next office. This book taught me how to use 3D drawings to produce prints in probably a third of the time it used to by drawing all three views. Plus, in our shop, isometric views are almost a must to understand many prints, which has reduced our production time greatly. I am fairly well versed now in 3D, but I still reference the book almost weekly.

I recommend this book to anyone who doesn't have time for courses and understands 2D construction.

4 out of 5 stars BEST FOR 3D.......2000-01-11

MY AUTOCAD INSTRUCTOR, JOHN LARSON RATED TOP REFERENCE TEXT FOR 3D. HE ALSO STATED THAT THIS IS THE ONLY REFERENCE BOOK HE EVER BOUGHT IN HIS CAREER OF TEACHING.

                    Book Description

Richly illustrated, 3D Graphics: A Visual Approach presents a visual introduction to the exciting world of computer graphics and covers important rendering techniques including bump, texture, and environment mapping. Through a technique called Visual Analysis, a reader learns to identify graphics effects visually by looking for a few cues. Cues and concepts are presented in an easy-to-advanced order, with more complex cues building from simpler ones. After finishing the book, a person will have a good feel for the range and visual effect of rendering algorithms. Accompanying 3D Graphics: A Visual Approach is a CD containing the TERA software. TERA (Tool for Exploring Rendering Algorithms) provides visual examples illustrating chapter topics and helps reinforce key concepts in an enjoyable way. With over 500,000 available image combinations, TERA provides a far richer resource of visual examples than could be contained in any conventional text. Features * Supported by CD-ROM containing TERA (Tool for Exploring Rendered Algorithms) software which is capable of generating 500,000 images for study * Uses Visual Analysis to help students understand the rendered algorithms * "Doing It Yourself" sections provide a guide to learning POV-Ray, a ray tracing package freely available via the Internet. Beginning with simple shapes and lighting, these sections introduce successively more advanced techniques, including CSG and radiosity. * Serves well as a main text in a survey course in computer science or as a useful supplement in a programming or 3D design course

5 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for leaning basic concepts of 3D graphics.......2000-04-24

My overall impression of the book with the accompanying software is excellent. It is an effective way to teach otherwise abstract ideas. The software along with the book put me in the "doing" mode, which is reminiscent of John Dewey's "learn by doing" theory. Further, Dr. Wolfe's writing style is welcoming and she did a wonderful job of breaking tremendously big ideas, like radiosity, into small understandable chunks... I felt like an active reader... This was another thing that made it friendlier for the non-computer scientist.

Even though the narration was serious, there was a refreshing sense of humor folded into it, we are to enjoy ourselves, after all. I especially liked the "go away" button in the software, it made me feel more at ease and added a sense of playfulness. The exercises had the same spirit, they set me up with new information, then asked me to test it out in new ways. All the while I was having fun and forgot that I was doing (ehem) work.

The strongest and most friendly parts of the narrative were the examples. Dr. Wolfe consistently tied new ideas with things we already know. For example, and there are too many to mention them all, she explained the intensity of a directional light source by connecting it with the headlights of a car at different distances, and the concept of ambient light by describing a portrait studio.

The basis of Dr. Wolfe's narrative, the fine tuning of the student's "visual literacy" is appropriate, especially since this is an under-represented discipline in contemporary schooling. As she stated in the introduction, visual literacy is important for artists and programmers because both groups need to be able to identify the computer graphic effects in an image and be able to communicate about it... Visual literacy is an understanding of images and what they represent. Just as letters form words that are symbolic of thought, so too are digital effects that form images which are representative of ideas. How those ideas come across visually has everything to do with how the picture is composed and what effects the artists and programmers choose. Just as an artist must accept that a raytraced three hour movie is computationally unreasonable, a programmer must understand that getting the correct highlight or texture impacts the meaning of an image, even if it requires slightly more work.

This kind of book is very appropriate for teaching 3D artists basic graphics concepts. The students grapple with all the topics Dr. Wolfe covered in the book. The students presently see these concepts as obscure options in a daunting software package manual. Many students never grasp the differences between the light models, surface algorithms, and shaders they choose. In fact, some do not understand why they run out of time trying to render an animation before an assignment deadline. After all they left it to render all night! 3D Graphics: A Visual Approach clearly illustrates why their animation did not finish rendering on time, as well as other abstract ideas the students initially encounter. The book removes the obscurity from the concepts and makes them real.

There are a few places that I do not think are necessary for the artists to understand, yet I would not remove them from the book. Just as the types of people in computer science vary, so do the people in art. Some will want to know exactly how the amplitude and frequency were calculated, while others will just want to use it. Even though there are places that are most appropriate for artists, such as the first three chapters, basic texture mapping, lighting, basic shaders, and portions of the cost and effect chapter, the other areas, like amplitude, raytracing revisited, and some of the details of "foolers" will provide further information for those interested.

The software was straightforward, and yes, it did take me all but 15 seconds to learn. However, some kind of notation in the table of contents that corresponds to each option in TERA. I often found myself checking the table of contents to try to figure out which part of TERA I should play with. It will just make the readability better.

I also think there should be a title bar that specifies what portion of TERA I am running while I explore. For example, something that says "Z-buffer Algorithms" or "Foolers" while I am in that section.

Overall, the book was excellent! A thinking reader will not get confused, yet when I look at the table of contents, I am amazed about the amount of information Dr. Wolfe covered. I almost feel a bit guilty, like I learned something without "working." I think that is the point.
