Set in a small town on a river in New Brunswick, River of the Brokenhearted, David Adams Richards's first novel since his Giller Prize-winning Mercy Among the Children, is told by Wendell King, son of Miles King and grandson of the feisty, willful Janie McLeary King, who made her fortune running the town's first cinema. Set against this trio is the lower-class family of the Drukens, especially Rebecca Druken and her uncle, Joey Elias, bitter because their own early cinema failed. Established early on, the feud plays out across three generations, spanning successes, failures, murder, and dissolution. Yet despite the somewhat bleak subject matter, tremendous humour and vitality persist in this story. The characters leap off the page, and in the person of Miles King, Richards has imagined a fully human soul of stunning believability. Miles is fatally flawed, committing slow suicide by gin as his cinema too begins to fail in the face of the TV's small screen. A sensitive eccentric, a target of small-town narrowness, he is subtly tortured psychically, for years, by Elias and the vicious Rebecca, who have made the downfall of the Kings their life's ambition. Miles King is a character of great loneliness, pathos, humor, and compassion, one of the finest creations not only of Canadian writing but any literature.
River of the Brokenhearted is the story of a river, the Miramichi, but it is mostly about the river of time that passes through Miles King, his mother, his son, and their enemies, carrying all to their ultimate fates: "She had left a river in New Brunswick that would swallow you with its life, shout in its rapids, laugh in its eddies, create industry in its currents, a river of Irish and Scottish myth, wedded to the soil." An outstanding work of fiction. --Mark Frutkin
Book Description
In the 1920s, Janie McLeary and George King run one of the first movie theatres in the Maritimes. The marriage of the young Irish Catholic woman to an older English man is thought scandalous, but they work happily together, playing music to accompany the films. When George succumbs to illness and dies, leaving Janie with one young child and another on the way, the unscrupulous Joey Elias tries to take over the business. But Janie guards the theatre with a shotgun, and still in mourning, re-opens it herself. “If there was no real bliss in Janie’s life,” recounts her grandson, “there were moments of triumph.”
One night, deceived by the bank manager and Elias into believing she will lose her mortgage, Janie resolves to go and ask for money from the Catholic houses. Elias has sent out men to stop her, so she leaps out the back window and with a broken rib she swims in the dark across the icy Miramichi River, doubting her own sanity. Yet, seeing these people swayed into immoral actions because of their desire to please others and their fear of being outcast, she thinks to herself that “…all her life she had been forced to act in a way uncommon with others… Was sanity doing what they did? And if it was, was it moral or justified to be sane?”
Astonishingly, she finds herself face to face that night with influential Lord Beaverbrook, who sees in her tremendous character and saves her business. Not only does she survive, she prospers; she becomes wealthy, but ostracized. Even her own father helps Elias plot against her. Yet Janie McLeary King thwarts them and brings first-run talking pictures to the town.
Meanwhile, she employs Rebecca from the rival Druken family to look after her children. Jealous, and a protégé of Elias, Rebecca mistreats her young charges. The boy Miles longs to be a performer, but Rebecca convinces him he is hated, and he inherits his mother’s enemies. The only person who truly loves her, he is kept under his mother’s influence until, eventually, he takes a job as the theatre’s projectionist. He drinks heavily all his life, tends his flowers, and talks of things no-one believes, until the mystery at the heart of the novel finally unravels.
“At six I began to realize that my father was somewhat different,” says Miles King’s son Wendell, who narrates the saga in an attempt to find answers in the past and understand “how I was damned.” It is a many-layered epic of rivalries, misunderstandings, rumours; the abuse of power, what weak people will do for love, and the true power of doing right; of a pioneer and her legacy in the lives of her son and grandchildren.
“David Adams Richards is perhaps the greatest Canadian writer alive,” wrote Lynn Coady in the Vancouver Sun. From this winner of the Giller Prize and the Governor General’s Award comes a story of a woman’s determined struggle against small town prejudice, and her son’s long battle against deceit. Richards’ own family ran Newcastle’s Uptown Theatre from 1911 to 1980, and Janie is based on his grandmother. Cast upon this history is a drama that explores morality and “the question of how one should live,” as The Atlantic Monthly said of
Mercy Among the Children, his previous novel.
Reviewers agree that Richards’ fiction sits firmly in the tradition of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky by concerning itself explicitly with good and evil and the human freedom to choose between them. Once again, in
River of the Brokenhearted, his twelfth novel, Richards has created a work of compassion and assured, poetic sophistication which finds in the hearts of its characters venality and goodwill, cruelty and love.

Unraveling the Laws of Human Morality..........2004-12-06
This is the best book that I have read in a long time. David Adams Richards writes about dichotomous themes--good and evil, love and hate--in a world that seems to have lost its sense of distinction between such binary oppositions. Richards's novel spans four generations and tells the story of two families--the Drukens and the Mclearys--and their conflict-ridden estrangement from themselves and from each other. Janie Mcleary, the protagonist, is an assertive and successful business woman who is left widowed by her husband. She and her children are tormented by the Druken family. Her daughter, Georgina, is murdered and her son, Miles, grows up to be ghosted by his past. Characters in this novel are haunted by memories and stuggle with their faith, morality and integrity. Richard's capacity as an author, stems, in part, from his astute perception into the nature of human greed and faith. River of the Brokenhearted is not a sensuous romance novel; it is a journey into the moral struggles of humanity. Richards conveys the notion that the "good" people and the "bad" people are not always cut in black and white colors; some seemingly "immoral" characters (i.e. Miles the alcoholic) emerge as the unsaid heroes of this text. Past wrongs are translated into bodily ailments that afflict the characters on a physical level, but these wrongs are erasable. Characters are given the chance of redemption. This book resonates with spiritual undertones. It may increase your faith...

Book Description
Kellen Tavadon, son of the Arch-Mage Lycaelon, thought he knew the way the world worked. His father, leading the wise and benevolent Council of Mages, protected and guided the citizens of the Golden City of the Bells. Young Mages in training-all men, for women were unfit to practice magic-memorized the intricate details of High Magic and aspired to seats on the council. Then he found the forbidden Books of Wild Magic-or did they find him? Their Magic felt like a living thing, guided by the hearts and minds of those who practiced it and benefited from it. Questioning everything he has known, Kellen discovers too many of the City's dark secrets. Banished, with the Outlaw Hunt on his heels, Kellen invokes Wild Magic-and finds himself running for his life with a unicorn at his side. Rescued by a unicorn, healed by a female Wild Mage who knows more about Kellen than anyone outside the City should, meeting Elven royalty and Elven warriors, and plunged into a world full of magical beings-Kellen both revels in and fears his new freedom. The one thing all the Mages of the City agreed on was that practicing Wild Magic corrupted a Mage. Turned him into a Demon. Would that be Kellen's fate? Deep in Obsidian Mountain, the Demons are waiting. Since their defeat in the last great War, they've been biding their time, sowing the seeds of distrust and discontent between their human and Elven enemies. Very soon now, when the Demons rise to make war, there will be no alliance between High and Wild Magic to stand against them. And then all the world will belong to the Endarkened.

Magic finds a Mag........2007-08-27
This is the first book of a clasical Fantisy triligy. As a youth comes of age his magic finds him. He must face hardships and dangers to find his mission in defeating evil and reseting the balance in the world.
Well writen and fast paced. Slow to start as the stages and characters are established. A definate read for the fan of fantisy and magic.
Strong fantasy Sword & Sorcery outing with new twists.......2007-05-31
Mercedes Lackey - working with James Mallory - has come up with a new twist on the old Sword & Sorcery fantasy genre. Kellen was raised in Armethalieh, where the Council of Mages basically control every aspect of the citizens' lives. No one ever leaves and very few outsiders are ever allowed inside. Changes are few and those allowed are very subtle. Kellen yearns for something different and constantly rebells against his strict father, Lycaelon, who is the Arch-Mage of the city. One day, while browsing through a bookseller's wares, he finds three mysterious little books - "The Book of Moon," "The Book of Sun" and "The Book of Stars," which deal with a type of magick he has never heard of before - very different from the High Magick that is the only type allowed in the City. Eventually Lycaelon discovers these books and Kellen is Banished. This is when the adventure begins - saved by a unicorn, nursed by to health by a woman who knows a lot about him and eventually going on a quest with an Elven Knight to save the Elves from a Demon caused blight. Along the way, we discover why no one is allowed to leave the City; why so few changes are allowed; why so few outsiders are allowed to enter the City; what kind of Magick Kellen is learning from his new books and who this mysterious woman is and why she knows so much about Kellen.
I really enjoyed this opening to the Obsidian Trilogy and look forward to the rest of them. It has been a good while since I've read any Sword and Sorcery and I have missed them. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys Fantasy, Sword & Sorcery or just a rollicking adventure!
Very Good Read !.......2007-04-15
Love this story for many reasons. Good character development, great storyline and action. Am looking forward to reading the rest in the series. The only reason I gave it four instead of five stars is that I finished reading Temeraire before hand which has taken the dragon genre to a totally new height. While this story is good, it paled a little in comparison with the other book I just finished. Still, I would recommend this to everyone to read.
Wonderful!.......2007-03-08
It's hard to explain what, exactly, is so captivating about this book. There is a certain fascination in the language that seems to grab hold of the reader and refuse to turn him/her loose until the very end. All of the books in this trilogy (The Outstretched Shadow, To Light a Candle, When Darkness Falls) are absolutely riveting.
It's a fairly classic tale of good verses evil, but with shades of gray as well. There are the usual suspects of Elves, Centaurs, Demons, Witches, Wizards, and Humans. There are knights in armor, fire-breathing dragons, dangerous battles, ardorous treks, and all the other trappings of your typical fantasy tale. However, don't let the 'typical' turn you away, because this book, and its sequels, are far from typical. The characters come alive. You'll grow with them, laugh with them, cry with them, and in the end, be surpised and saddened that the end has arrived so suddenly.
A pleasant surprise..........2007-01-01
I havent read any books previously written by Mercedes Lackey, and I havent read the Merlin books penned my Mallory. I might have been living under a rock, but for some reason the two authors never registered on my radar. This book was recommended to me by a coworker after we discussed the novels that we both like to read.
This book is the start of a high-fantasy trilogy, and I must say that it fits the vein very well. It is a serious book, filled with the elements that make this subgenre so prominent. In this novel you will find wizards, elves, centaurs, other fey folk, and a great struggle against a very powerful enemy.
The book starts off a little slower paced for my liking, but by sticking with it, you are filled in on some great backstory and little pieces that make the world that Lackey and Mallory have conjured seems just outside the realm of reality.
I enjoyed this book and was pleased with its conclusion. The book, as mentioned earlier, started slow, but then rushed headlong into a fitting climax and conclusion. I have promptly picked up the second novel in the series and am happily devouring it as we speak.
I reccomend this novel to lovers of fantasy fiction, readers of Salvator, Greenwood, Lewis, and others who have populated the genre with memorable characters and great stories. Its a good read, just hunker down for the first 200 or so pages and let the story develop at its own satisfying pace.

the first story is the greatest, the rest of the books short stories are very good but some are so enigmatic that I am not sure of what they were trying to tell me. Overall a good read
A Freaking Amazing Collection Of Short Stories.......2005-11-13
This is the only collection of R. A. Lafferty's short stories that I've read (a later addition: well, not anymore), so I can't say how it compares with the rest, but based on how good this one is, I would say every one of them is worth acquiring (a later addition: true: get all of them). I think Lafferty is an obscure genius, and that more people should know his work. Lafferty's publisher once remarked that he has seen Lafferty's work "continually being compared to that of James Joyce by people who do not make such comparisons lightly". And in a better world, as one author pointed out, Lafferty would be as famous as Joyce, and other such renowned writers.
The Wildside Press edition is good. The paper looks and feels like it will last and last, no matter what. The image area leaves plenty of room for your hands to hold the book, while you are reading, without touching the ink. The binding is tough, yet the pages open well.
The font size is on the small side, but that is about the only complain I can think of.
Whether you like this collection or not, do not miss Lafferty's novel, The Devil Is Dead.
Each story a diamond.......2005-08-08
The short stories of R.A.Lafferty are (still?) a treasure known to not many people. Forget about writers filed under "Fantasy" and leading you to another Middle Earth copy. THIS is Fantasy and it will lead you both to the End of Time/Universe AND to your own block where aliens just started a new trade on the other side of the road for "Jupiter only offers freezing cold and you can only do business with insects" (story: "In our block")
I read and re-read this compilation since I was 18 years old. It tickles ALL your senses. And leaves you rolling on the floor sometimes too. Buy it, you will be amazed!
Believe the Hype.......2005-05-03
I'm so glad this book is back in print, as for years I would keep finding used copies in used book stores, only to find myself giving copies away. This is truly the best collection of short storeis I have ever read, even the best by Lafferty (though I also recommend Iron Tears, Strange Doings and Ringing Changes quite highly) - Lafferty is completely unique and original, and his stories are wacky, endlessly inventive, hilarious and will twist your brain in directions you didn't know it could go. There are a LOT of great storeis in this book, but my abolute favorites are Seven Day Terror and Hole on the Corner. Really though, this is a brilliant work that deserves a VERY wide audience...
Lafferty is a genius.......2005-02-03
The "cranky old man from Tulsa" is one the great eccentrics of fantastical literature. His stylish, tumultuous, absurdist and sui generis short stories often blends theological speculations, satire, black humour, conspiracies, cartoonish humour..UUUFFFFFFF.He is a conscious stylist that assaults the reader with torrents of words, invention and craziness not often encountered in any kind of literature. On the surface his short stories seems to be aimed only to entertain ( and they DO entertain !! ) but more often than not they address serious issues. NINE HUNDRED GRANDMOTHERS is a fine introduction to Lafferty and shoudn't be missed .

Book Description
Time in "the wilderness" -- solitary meditation on simplicity, prayer, and other key disciplines of faith -- is directly in keeping with Jesus' example of going apart to pray. Now, with the clarity and encouragement that distinguish the Renovaré collection of spiritual resources, this gentle guide to retreat unshrouds that historical tradition -- and so reveals marvelous opportunities for spiritual renewal in contemporary Christian practice.
Helping us to create self-guided retreats -- for individuals or groups -- Emilie Griffin offers plans, encouragements, and suggestions based on her own experience and fortified by the inspiring words of contemporary Christian writers such as Eugene Peterson, Luci Shaw, and Virginia Stem Owens.
A virtual primer for retreat, this volume defines the basics and provides practical tips on setting realistic expectations and on achieving the relaxation and freedom necessary for the soul to become, in the words of de Caussade, "light as a feather." A detailed one-day retreat makes an ideal model for first-timers, and several different examples illustrate how time in the wilderness can be both accessible and wonderfully illuminating -- no matter what your schedule. Wilderness Time is another balanced, practical strategy from Renovaré helping us grow closer to God.

Let this guide be your companion to create your retreat into the wilderness to experience the Divine.
For those who desire a quick guide to the subject.......2005-12-06
Griffin provides in 100 pages a short, concise guide to the field of spiritual retreat. This is only an appetiser but she provides a list of recommended texts for those who wish to go further. She concentrates on three types of retreats: the outward, inward, and corporate. This is followed by chapters outlining three retreats ranging from one day to three day to seven day. The frame is provided but you are left to your imagination to fill that in.
Overall, a nice short introduction to a valuable exercise.
An invitation.......2001-09-22
Ms. Griffin not only invites, but accompanies us into the world of spiritual retreats. With detailed suggestions, instructions and examples, it doesn't take a spiritual giant to begin...just a willingness to move closer to God.

"Easy To Do" NOT so easy........2007-03-27
When I purchased this book along with the other Floral Woodcarving book I was really looking forward to getting it. I love flowers and the discription said it was a good book for beginners and had good instructions and all that. Well, I was VERY disappointed with this book and the other one. I found that being a beginner it will be awhile before I can tackle these patterns. The illustrations were not at all what I expected, black and white and actually kind of ugly, and their "instructions" were just a small paragraph that really didn't tell you much, they sure weren't step by step. I personally can't recommend this book but maybe someone who has some experience with carving already would find it to be just fine.

Beautiful architecture, glossy and oversized.......2001-07-02
This book is a feast for the eyes as it captures the elegance and romance of the Tuscany region. My own preference for more simple decor became obvious as much of the interiors are very lavish. However, if you like the gilded and the opulent looks, you won't be disappointed. The exterior photos of these homes were my favorites and captured the ageless beauty of this region.
Magnificent!!!.......2001-06-22
Another lovely book from Angelica Taschen! Like the ''Seaside Interiors'' this one is a ''must have'' book also. Lovely pictures, cozy and quality home interiors. Beautiful coffee table book. Makes you think that it is a result of hard work and quality time spend to do this book. Enjoy it!

This wonderful book is a true inspiration and also a type of travelogue. A chance to see inside some of those mysterious buildings that fill Siena and Florence and the hillsides of Tuscany. See the guys with the good plumbing and what they do with really seriously old timbers and architecture.

Great Jews In Sports
ASIN: 0824604571 |
Product Description
Featuring over one hundred major portraits and two hundred thumbnail sketches, Great Jews in Entertainment is a glorious celebration of Jews in the performing arts. Darryl Lyman, author of the acclaimed biographical works Great Jews in Music and Great Jewish Families, salutes outstanding actors, singers, comedians, and musicians whose contributions to the world of entertainment have been truly extraordinary. Great Jews in Entertainment pays tribute to such charismatic personalities as · Billy Crystal, that "MAHvelous" comedic actor whose hilarious yet poignant impressions and warm, gentle style have endeared him to fans of all ages. · Bette Midler, the self-styled Divine Miss M, who overcame her sensitivity about being "a fat little Jewish girl with problems" to become one of the greatest singing and acting sensations of all time. · Jerry Seinfeld, who after many lean years as a standup comic went on to create and star in his own highly successful situation comedy "about nothing." · Barbra Streisand, a Brooklynite who landed the role of Fanny Brice in the Broadway musical Funny Girl and soared to stardom virtually overnight. · Bob Dylan, the "on-the-edge" singer/songwriter who rose to the head of the 1960s folk movement and later went on to spark the creation of a new musical genre called folk-rock. From such legendary stars as Luther Adler, Lauren Bacall, Morris Carnovsky, Lee J. Cobb, and Zero Mostel to such "hot" contemporary celebrities as Natalie Portman, Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, and Lisa Kudrow, this delightful volume informs and entertains as it applauds the work of Jewish artists who have given us countless hours of pleasure.
