If you have not read The Harmony Series yet, you better pour that cup of coffee or tea and dig in! You will not be able to put it down until your neck is sore and your back hurts, and you are completely blurry eyed. It is almost as good as getting to the bottom of a cornetto ice cream cone!
It took me about 2 chapters before I GOT IT, before I got the down home humor and wit of Phil Gulley. I wait on baited breath for the next in the series to come out. Until then I can satisfy my Harmony cravings by reading Front Porch Tales and other wonderful thouht provoking stories.
Phillip Gulley is my all time favorite author. We own a bed and breakfast in Rocky Mount Virginia (The Claiborne House B&B). I am almost positive every character in this series lives right here in this town. We have one of his porch books ON our front porch and guests love reading his anecdotal tales.

I LOVE this series!.......2007-02-16
If Sam was my pastor, I'd be a regular church goer. All of the Harmony books are warm, touching and hilariously funny without being the slightest bit sugar-coated. Sam and his flock are real people with all their foibles. I've known people like every one of Mr. Gulley's characters Sometimes I want to shake them; sometimes I want to hug them. Mostly they make me laugh till my sides hurt; sometimes they make me cry.
I bought this book for my local library because it was the only one in the series they didn't already own, and I KNEW that other people reading the books would be disappointed if this one wasn't available. I hope I brightened someone else's day by giving the book as much as reading the book brightened my day.
It doesn't get better than this.

Pastor Sam Gardner is back with his quirky Quaker flock. As usual Dale Hinshaw is full of schemes to spread the Gospel. This time he has given up on Scripture eggs and is now sending Salvation Balloons which are strategically aimed at liberals and unsaved people. Sam encounters problems in his own household when he and his wife can't agree on a vacation spot and the parishioners argue over everything from putting in a new furnace to who to include in the ladies' celebrity quilt. With his usual gentle humor, Philip Gulley brings to life the colorful and quirky characters of Harmony, Indiana, much to the readers' delight!

Every Phillip Gulley book is like traveling back home. The characters make me laugh, cry and give me hope that I, too, will make it through the next bump in the road. These books remind me of the Dorsetville series by Katherine Valentine. Keep them coming!
Best of Harmony!.......2003-12-27
This had to be my favorite "Harmony" book by Phillip Gulley! I laughed out loud in several places. This is a book of FICTION and it pokes fun at various aspects of a typical congregation, from the well-meaning but misguided people who judge others more harshly than themselves to those who truly do have Jesus in their hearts, but are overpowered by the strong voices of other church members. Poor Deena Morrison is still single, and everyone is trying to marry her off! Dale Hinshaw now has his "scripture balloons" sailing off to convert the heathens in Chicago, and Sam's wife wants the vacation she's never had. Oh, and then there's the replacement of the "memorial oven" in the kitchen where the annual Chicken Noodle Dinner is made! I hope Phillip Gulley continues to write about Harmony and it's inhabitants!

This issue: Guts has just left his post in the mercernary group, the Hawks. To do so, he defeated Griffith in a duel. Upon gaining his freedom, he wanders alone into the woods, confronted by the Knight of Skeleton. Strangely, this awesome figure utters advice that he believes will save Guts' life. Something incredibly ominous approaches. Something is about to happen that will change the lives of Guts, Caska, and Griffith forever.
If you enjoy a good plot, you cannot go wrong with Berserk. It is such a strange and skillful blend of fantasy and realism that you become completely submerged in it. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys action and supernatural intrigue.

If you've found yourself tiring of high school comedies & ninja kids, but still want engaging graphic storytelling, then do yourself a favor & give this series a try.
By volume 9, Miura's style is at it's height. This volume is the end of the beginning, so to speak - the good times of comraderie, romping around as a mercenary gang, climbing up the midland social ladder - are coming to a sudden and violent end. Griffith's ambition may destroy the hawks once and for all...
The series is now almost to the point where the Anime left off..and believe me, you want to see what happens next.

Lethal Heritage, being the fourth BattleTech book I have read, is a solid introduction to the Blood of Kerensky trilogy. I recommend reading the Warrior trilogy before delving into the Blood of Kerensky, for a few choice reasons. First of all, the Warrior trilogy gives you a chance to familiarize yourself with Stackpole's writing style. In addition, the Warrior trilogy provides you with the necessary background knowledge of the Inner Sphere that you need to fully understand Lethal Heritage.
Lethal Heritage is the commencement of the Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere. This action packed addition to the story of BattleTech is necessary in the continuance of the saga. The Blood of Kerensky trilogy as a whole is very important, and Stackpole thrives in the heat of battle.

This is the first Battletech novel I have ever read.
It is the first in the Blood of Kerensky trilogy and also the first novel in the Enter the Clans Battletech Era, which is comprised of 7 total novels.
The book is confuzing for the newcomers in the Battletech universe. There is a lot of action happening on a lot of fronts, the chapters going back and forth but Stackpole did a good job at making the action integrate seemless. The tranzitions are not rough but a bit hard to follow.
Stackpole is definitely a great writer. The action is great, storyline is rich and intriguing, character development and descriptions are also great.
If you plan on reading Battletech books in the Clans Era [years 3049-3059] this is the book to start with and make sure you read them in order.

Wise old man whispers into your ear.......2005-05-01
The author of this book compiles teaching from the Rebbe (Menachem Schneerson, the Lubavitcher rebbe until 1994) in a simple and skillful way, dividing them into topics that can be readily addressed. There are chapters on children and education, marriage and choosing a wife, sadness and how to cope with it, death; basically, all major emotions and events in life. The chapters are full of anecdotes, which make for a very vivid way of teaching.
Though I am not a deeply religious man, I certainly appreciate the comfort provided by the book. It is not restricted to Jews, though I think Jews would be more familiar with the stories. It does an attempt to reconcile religion with science (a feeble one, I should add), being this I think the only more controversial part of it; otherwise, I can almost picture the old man whispering in my ear, pointing in the direction of righteousness and goodness.

The Century In Food: America's Fads And Favorites begins a culinary history of America in 1900, a time when most of the cooking was done in fireplaces and a slim figure was considered a mark of ill health. Author Beverly Bundy (Food Editor at The Fort Worth Star-Telegram newspaper) proceeds to provide a fascinating and informative survey of the inventions, innovations, and evolutions in American food preparation, culinary tastes, and a steadily expanding roster of recipe ingredients available to Americans whether eating at home or dining out. Although there are a wealth of featured and illustrative recipes, The Century In Food is more than just one more cookbook, it is also an informed and highly entertaining history of American culinary culture spread out over ten decades and enhanced with 400 full-color images. The Century In Food is highly recommended reading for both students of American Popular Culture and cookbook enthusiasts.

I bought this book the same day it got a nice plug in the Washington Post's food section. This may have been a professional courtesy, as Beverly Bundy is food editor at the Fort-Worth Star-Telegram. However, as a longtime collector of books and pamphlets on American food history, I was shocked at the slapdash quality of this overhyped large-format book, which lists for the [$$$] I paid at my neighborhood bookseller.
The type is hard to read, especially when it appears over dark color screens. Full pages are are devoted to banal recipes for things like pineapple upside-cake, or clam dip, that just about everyone has already seen. The author has plenty of space for graphics, but despite the generous page size, many of the ads reproduced are too small to read without squinting, surrounded by overgenerous margins. The design of this book is kitchen-table awkward, unusual for a book of this price.
The images include such non-food head-scratchers as a U.S. Navy recruiting poster and a photograph of prospective immigrants at Ellis Island having their eyes inspected for trachoma. Granted, women in the workforce and immigration have had an impact on American food, but American food is what we bought this book, ostensibly, to read about. Such padding is frustrating considering the incredibly rich subject matter, much of which is still hanging around our mothers' kitchens, if not our own.
Bundy credits a scant 30 sources, and she appears to have borrowed heavily--very heavily--from several of them. There are disturbing similarities both in recipe selection and even in text to some of the pre-existing books. My copy of "The Century in Food" is plastered with annotated Post-Its after just one reading.

Both "Fashionable Food" and "Kitchen Culture" are meticulously edited, put together with loving care and LOTS more content than Bundy's book. ... I also recommend "The Gallery of Regrettable Food" (2001) by James Lileks, which is less comprehensive but extremely funny.
"The Century in Food" is a big waste of money, with the exception of Bundy's photo of the seven-cent Doritos bag, an artifact of my childhood. Nice to see it again, but it isn't worth [$$$].
Small type makes this book very difficult to read.......2003-01-24
I eagerly anticipated this book because I am very interested in food history. As another reviewer mentioned, it is largely a collection of photographs, organized by decade, highlighting popular recipes, prepared foods, applicances and advertisements. As someone middle-aged with bifocals, I found the small print in this book extremely difficult to read. This difficulty is exacerbated by some of the color arrangements, which do not provide enough contrast between the color of the type and background. I know that I would really like this book -- if I could see the tiny print well enough to read it. Too frustrating. I would not buy this again.

I was appalled and dismayed to read the tacky little review of Ms. Bundy's book, The Century in Food. Thanks to this book, I was led on a delightful romp through the foods and foolishness that defined us as American eaters during the past century.
Not only are the pictures entertaining and nostalgic, but I found myself quoting this book daily after devouring it one night.
I found The Century in Food to not only be a worthy addition to our American cultural discourse but the best conversation-enhancer I have come upon in years.
Our memories, our taste buds, and our buying habits are chronicled here and I, for one. am thrilled that Ms. Bundy has given us all this fodder to ponder.
Needs a lot of improvement.......2003-01-02
This is probably one of the worst books on food history I've ever read. One would think that since the publisher released the book several months late, they might have used that extra time to proofread. The number of typographical errors truly astounded me, and made the book difficult, if not agonizing, to read. There is very little actual text, as this is primarily a picture book. While the pictures are of fine quality and brought back many memories, I noticed that the captions didn't always match up with the pictures. And while the brightly colored pages did make a visually interesting background, it also made the tiny type rather difficult to read. Overall, there is very little to learn from this book, and anyone who is interested in food history would be better served by one of the many other books already on the market.

I am a Longaberger consultant and have every Bentley's Guide ever published, including an autographed first copy. It is a great help in promoting the value of our products (the fact that they appreciate, not depreciate)! It has been of great help in increasing insurance coverage, not only for myself, but also for customers. I had one customer who lost items in a fire; we used the guide for the replacement value for the insurance company. I now have customers who purchase their own Guide.

This is a book sure to make both kids and parents happy. Using both colors and days of the week as its frame, the book helps change fussy "bath-takers" into kids who see baths in a whole different way. The text and art are a perfect match, with the joy of the text brought to life in the kid's faces. These are real--and really messy--kids, but they're contagiously happy. The rhymes are clever and funny without being forced, the refrain will have kids chanting along, and the whole idea of Kid Tea is inspired.

Each year, the New York chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) holds an evening of talks featuring emerging innovative designers. Fresh Dialogue 2: New Voices in Graphic Design reflects the batch who made their presentations on May 10, 2000. They included Kevin Lyons, One9ine partners Warren Corbitt and Matt Owens, and Susan Parr of ReVerb. This book re-creates the experience using transcripts of conversations with each and is illustrated with generous color images from their bodies of work.
Kevin Lyons's clients include Adidas, Nike, and Urban Outfitters, and his designs incorporate graffiti and rotoscoping-style techniques in textured, multilayered compositions. He casually and openly discusses his education (undergraduate studies in film at RISD, graduate work at CalArts), his work process ("My process is to wait until the last second and then go crazy..."), and appropriating street culture or hip-hop to make a design relevant. One9ine partners Corbitt and Owens discuss how being a relatively small studio makes them a good choice for small budgets, despite the fact that the rich designs they produce for such clients as the Cooper-Hewitt Museum and MOMA show no sign of limited funds. "Honestly, good things come from smart people working in a small group making smart decisions."
