Book Description
A Slice of Life is a collection of contemporary food writing that readers can really sink their teeth into: one that examines the ineluctable link between nourishment, literature, and society. Represented here are some of the world's best known writers, many of whom-like Julia Child, Marcella Hazan, and Anthony Bourdain-are well known for their alimentary musings, while others, like Roland Barthes and Susan Sontag are better known for their writings in other genres; all speak eloquently on the nature of food, language, and the adaptability of social customs.
Organized into chapters addressing descriptions of actual meals, autobiographical memories, the cultural spectacle of eating, the concept of want, the celebration of good food, and the philosophical, spiritual, and ethical aspects of food, author Bonnie Marranca has cooked up a tempting meal of writing that reflect on how the consumption of food-or the lack of it-takes on larger social significance. Charles Simic eulogizes tomatoes and questions bioengineering, Wole Soyinka delves into the nature of fasting, Umberto Eco declaims on in-flight dining, and Emily Prager reminisces, in an original essay, about Swedish food and the rejuvenating possibilities of a trip to Ikea-among others.
Garnishing the feast are Marranca's tantalizing introduction and Betty Fussell's meditation on the essential connection between food, existence, and writing. A Slice of Life is a banquet that readers will savor through its many courses.
Customer Reviews:
A Perfect Anthology.......2004-03-10
I can't resist a good anthology. Honestly, I can't resist any anthology on food or travel, but so many are disappointing. A Slice of Life does not disappoint.
A Slice of Life is subtitled "Contemporary Writers on Food" and the essays range in time from the early 1950s to 2003, with the majority from the 1990s. Note also the emphasis on "writers." With a few exceptions, these pieces are written by people who make their living writing, not by cooking or eating. Therefore, the standard is high, and the result is impressive. Russell Baker, Umberto Eco, Calvin Trillin, Isabel Allende, and Jane Kramer are among the fine essayists whose work is represented here. However, even the exceptions, such as Julia Child's memory of her first TV shows, are superb.
I enjoyed revisiting favorite authors: Anthony Bourdain, Adam Gopnik, Jeffrey Steingarten, Sallie Tisdale. And I always hope to discover writers I've never read. Now that I know about Nigel Slater and Jay Parini, I will be looking for more of their work. This is what I love about anthologies.
Riffs, meditations and memories.......2003-11-17
This impressive collection features meditations on life and food from writers as diverse as M.F.K Fisher, Russell Baker, Isabel Allende, Maxine Kumin, Ntozake Shange and lots more stars of the literary and culinary firmament.
There are some breathtakingly poignant pieces, chief among them Cara de Silva's story of the cookbook compiled in a concentration camp, which made its way across a quarter century and through numerous hands to reach its author's daughter. Or Chitrita Banerjee's essay following her mother's Bengali widowhood, a cultural sentence of privation.
Some are actually about food itself - Elizabeth David's piece on herbs, Nigella Lawson's sensual celebration of cooking, Corby Kummer's sojourn at a coffee plantation, New Hampshire poet Charles Simic's ambivalence about the bio-engineered tomato - but most are about life's associations with food.
Jay Parini began a career of writing in restaurants in the hubbub of Lou's diner in Hanover, NH. Putting together a New Year's feast for her young daughter inspires a tirade of cultural memory in Ntozake Shange. Historian Rachel Laudan dispatches the nostalgia for "slow food" with a healthy dash of historical reality. Roland Barthes meditates on chopsticks and Umberto Eco muses on the psychology of airplane food.
Editor Marranca has chosen, above all, writers. Wide ranging in subject, mood and style, these pieces all share a commonality of quality. A repast to sample and savor.

The second adventure of slippery Jim diGriz the Robin Hood of the far future, robbing the rich to give to the even richer...himself.
Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-26
What sort of woman would a rogue and a thief and now a secret agent super-operative type be interested in? Well, in the case of Slippery Jim di Griz it appears that the woman is an uber-version of his old self, and he did end up pursuing in more ways than one.
The Rat was not a violent man, the one who set his hormones aflutter didn't mind a bit of shooting. After a bit of readjustment, they married, save the universe, and have kids.
Amusing, again.
Light Space Espionage.......2004-08-02
The novel reads a lot like an episode of Mission: Impossible set in outer space. Faced with defeating a warmongering interplanetary force, James DiGriz infiltrates his way in by assuming another's identity (complete with facial alteration) then procedes to bluff and improvise his way through increasingly hazardous conditions. DiGriz is cornered several times, captured twice, but always manages to avoid getting his neck snapped in a trap.
There's nothing particularly groundbreaking in this novel. DiGriz is cut of the same cloth as most gentleman rogues. The story has a couple deus ex machina moments, but nothing intolerable. I thought the escape from the airfield was nicely handled, and Harrison was able to introduce The Planet of Warrior Women into the story without degenerating into "Bill the Galactic Hero" nonsense.
If you enjoyed the first novel in the series, you'll likely enjoy this one also. If you haven't read the first one, go ahead and read it before this one - it introduces a couple characters and makes their all-to-brief appearances here more enjoyable.
RAT ATTACK!.......2000-04-29
Slippery Jim is off to save the Universe and fill his pockets at the same time. On the way to saving the Universe, Slippery Jim gets married at the point of a gun, becomes a father and takes on serious bad guys. He assumes three different identities, tackles a world without any weaponry on his person and is saved by beautiful women, one of whom is Angelina, his spouse. His greatest challenge, however, is differentiating the identity of his twin sons! Yes, this one is worth reading, so go for it!

An unashamed romp through the flavors, sensations and joys that wine can give, Red and White is a celebration of an ancient liquid written for a new generation of wine drinkers.
Customer Reviews:
A Truly Useful and Enjoyable Addition to the Wine Bookshelf.......2006-10-06
This excellent book begins with an encouraging statement that could also be considered a warning: "This is a new look at a very old subject, a modern taste of an ancient liquid. It gives you, the reader, a feeling that you can smell, savour and enjoy the subject while learning a little more about it." Given the plethora of wine books (or, for that matter, wine labels) with which we are constantly bombarded, "learning a little bit more" may be a tall order, but Red and White gives a refreshing, and lingering, account of itself. Written by an Australian and from an Australian perspective, the book nevertheless gives wine appreciation basics we all can use, without, as its started purpose, duplicating the work of extant wine encyclopedias, atlases and buying guides.
The book would be a joy to read without the lush photographs, but its overall large-format breadth is a pleasure on paper. It is clearly divided into three major segments: "Vineyard, The Flavours of Wine," subdivides into one syllable subsections: White, Red, Air, Water, Earth, Sun, Harvest, nicely covering the basics regarding grapes, soil issues, climate. "Winery, The Styles of Wine," takes the reader through the full winemaking process, giving excellent enrichment sections like "Gas" (how sparkling wines are made) and "Spirit" (all about fortified wines like port and sherry), in addition to basics on the book's namesake reds and whites. "Bottle, The Enjoyment of Wine," brings in details and insights about tasting, buying, storing, serving and otherwise optimizing the experience of having to do with wine.
The "Nose" subsection teaches you to "Squint," "Swirl and Sniff," "Swig and Suck," "Spit or Swallow." I admit to being one who appreciates the Anglo-Saxon heritage of short and alliterated words, but actualizing these verbs is the real point; reading about wine ought to lead to some tasting, as it does here. A nice subsection under the heading "Wine Waffle (and what it all means)" gives me a greater handle on vocabulary treasures from "acidic," "aggressive," and "austere" to such gems as "terroir," "ullage" and "vinous." While I have not yet adopted every one of these terms into my wine lexicon, Red and White is likely, until I wear the book out, to increase the scope of my enjoyment of the stuff. This is a wine book designed to withstand the true test: it will be used, and nicely stained, by red, white, and the myriad shades in between.

Where are the Victorian/Edwardian hats?.......2007-01-17
I guess I hoped this book would be as good as "Vintage Hats and Bonnets 1770-1970" but alas, it isn't. Not much history, just lots and lots of pictures. Over half the book is hats from the 1940'-1960's, which is great if you like those years. Also, I think some of the early hats stated from the 1870's are really 1950's, they certainly look modern for the 19th century. Sorry, but I was disappointed.
Fabulous and Informative.......2006-06-04
This book made me want to wear hats and play dress-up. It is an engaging look at millinery history and trends that will tempt any hat lover or fashion enthusiast.
Shephard's books are quickly becoming essential additions to the fashion historian's library.
In the world of millinery fashion, this book has no peers! .......2006-06-04
I am fast becoming a fan of author Norma Shephard. I was duly impressed by her book "Accessorizing the Bride" which lead me to pick up a copy of her latest work - "1,000 Hats".
The title does not do the book justice since here are well over 1,000 visual representations, in this stunningly presented book outlining millinery history, that had me revisiting my past in a most romantic and fulfilling way.
Sheppard's skills with photography and her intelligent, carefully articulated descriptions of each piece bring the book to life and may well be the foundation of a millinery revival that is long overdue in North American culture.
Outstanding .......2006-06-01
This is a gorgeous book with outstanding photography and fascinating "hat history". The cover image is especially charming.

From the supplier: The modern CEO has to wear several hats in order to be truly effective. A corporate leader has to don the technology hat, the finance hat, the human resources hat and several other hats. The CEO also has to wear a real estate hat because real estate is becoming an important element of corporate strategy. Although a real estate strategy is not the only important factor in the corporate strategy, such strategy cannot underestimate the importance of the real estate strategy. A number of factors are making real estate crucial, including globalization, technological innovations, hypergrowth, human considerations, accountability and the need for speed. The modern CEO has to manage real estate as an asset and understand how real estate can support the business.

Good and Basic.......2005-10-27
This book is a collection of magazine articles. Fair enough.
However, they're all very short (2-3 pages), well illustrated with photographs, and contain a wealth of basic information. The sections on jigs and assembly techniques alone was worth the price.
I liked it and found it extremely valuable as I got back into building balsa radio control models. I wish I'd had this book years ago before I gave up in disgust because I thought my model-building skills were deficient. While they were deficient, I could have made them more than adequate with the tips from this book.
Old articles.......2004-02-14
I bought this book hoping to get some conventional instruction
into building a model airplane. I am a building clutz, and can use all the help I can get. What is inside is a collection of old magazine articles, telling how to build parts out of paper, some useful info about some construction, but nothing that I cant read on the internet for free, a wasted $19.95.

good way to look at your work spaces.......2003-02-21
i have used this to think through the offices my husband and i use, in our home offices and at our public offices at work.
good ideas are presented in a "bullet point" manner, i.e., skip over that page if it does not pertain to your situation. practical, cut to the chase, way to look at this area of your life.
Great Gift and Helpful Tips.......2001-04-26
I think this book makes a wonderful gift and it is also great for easy fixes, which actually DO work. This book is not intended for those who wish to study the subject in depth, but it is not trying to be that kind of a book. It is a little book of feng shui, and gives you pointers on how you can make sure your feng shui at work is protected... and gives you tips on how to enhance for good feng shui.
For those who want the subject in more depth, go for Lillian Too's Encyclopedia of Feng Shui or the Complete Illustrated Guide to Feng Shui. These are her staples and are great reference manuals.
Good bathroom reading.......2000-07-06
This book fits easily into a shirt pocket and contains little snippets of feng shui advice. If you are very heavy into that sort of thing, it is probably too light a book for you. If you barely know what feng shui is or don't buy into it, then the book's advice is still practical in that it gets you thinking about simple changes you can make at your workplace to enhance its decor. If you are like me and tend to have clutter all over your desk, and your only wall decorations are a calendar you got for free and a picture of your mom, then you probably you ought to check out this book.

Number 1 Fan.......2001-05-10
I have to say that this book was very informative and told me loads of things about Alanis that i though i already knew. This is a must have for any fan as you get to understand Alanis as a normal person rather than just another million selling artist. This book shows that Alnais is true and as devoted to her life as we are to her
You Live You Learn was Great.......1999-03-12
When my communications teacher assigned a 5-8 minute informative speech, I thought what better time than now to talk about Alanis. I thought I knew just about everything on her, and what I didn't know I figured I'd be able to find on the internet and in magazines. When my professor said no magazines or internet addresses allowed, I about died. I had some trouble finding a lot of information other than magazine articles on Alanis, but after I found this book I had all I needed. It was not only informative, but extremely interesting and something I actually enjoyed reading. I found that I knew very little of Alanis and her past, and after reading it I had gained a great sense of respect and admiration for her. She is truly an amazing, talented person both musically and in her personality. She really enjoys her music, and lives through it, which is clearly evident after reading this book. I would definately reccommend it to anyone wishing to learn more about her.
Excellent read on a popular star.......1998-08-24
Alanis Morrisette keeps on winning new fans, I'm included. Even though her album Jagged Little Pill was played continously on the radio, this book helped me realize what a talented and devoted person she is to her music and songwriting. With her new single, "Uninvited," this book came out at the right time... letting me in on her upbringing, background and early years as a songstress in Canada. If you're a fan, read this book!
You Live, You Learn.......1998-08-24
Besides Paul Cantins book of Alanis Morissette this is the very best Alanis book. Well, it is definately among the best. If you need Up To Date information on Alanis this is the book to read. It is the most recent written Alanis book, and has info on both the Tibetan Freedom Concert and Bridge School Benefit. It has eight pages of color pictures. If you would like to view the cover, it has the same picture as "Death Of Cinderella" except smaller, and the backround is of Alanis facing up like praying or something. The pictures are all black and white, however they are beautiful RARE ones (like Alanis and Madonna and Alanis running in the triathalon in mid summer 1997.) The review I wrote before is fiction. I hadn't even taken one look at the book, however now I have it. It is an awesome Alanis book. I think that any Alanis fan MUST!!!!!!!!!! have it.
Alanis Morissette: You Live You Learn.......1998-08-06
I think that this book goes a lot along with Death Of Cinderella (by Stuart Coles). It has a lot of the same text. The pictures are not your regular Alanis Morissette pictures, but they are good. There are a few mistakes on this book (Like on page 37) I would really recommend Paul Cantin's book as #1 though. You may be impressed. JpnOldMan

Another Quick Study.......2001-09-19
Essentially that title sums it up. The problem with most of these kinds of books is they cover every facet of the performer's life but they are too close in time and too enthusiastic to be definitive on the career of someone who is clearly talented and articulate but has a long way to go to develop to the level of those whom we will remember a hundred years on. This is a source on a life in progress not anywhere near a final word and analysis.
This review will serve as well for the second edition when it is listed here.
HORRIBLE.......2000-01-06
I absolutely LOVE Alanis. But this book is HORRIBLE. It has HARDLY anything about her. He just babbles on about Joni Mitchell and Bjork and people like that! The word Alanis is mentioned like 2 times in the whole book. The pics are kool, but the words are stupid. Don't bother buying this because you won't hear anything about alanis.
I'm a huge Alanis-o-holic but I still love this book........1999-04-30
This book is definitely not the book to read if you're looking for something like a biography, thoughts, feelings or anything like that of Alanis Morissette. I read this book expecting to fill this gap that I had in my Alanis knowledge (I'd like to get inside her head!) but instead I learnt a lot more.
As I read it, I discovered that it was less to do with Alanis, and much to do with 'the female rock revolution.' BUT STOP: GO AND BUY IT ANYWAY! This book is really interesting, or at least I thought so, because you learn so much about what Alanis Morissette has been part of. Thanks to this book, I've learnt about Tori Amos (a great singer and Alanis' friend!,) Patti Smith (an oldish rock singer) and many more female rockers, and it's really great!
The way the book is written can be a bit tiresome: Barry Grills seems to be stuck on using the word 'ironic' every other sentence, and also it is a little hard to get into, but I do recommend it.
NOT as great.......1999-03-08
Paul cantin's books on alanis are so much better this one is not. its hard to say that an alanis book isn good knowing how big a fan i am and all but if you are a alanis collecter you should get the book, but if your new onm alanis this isnt the greatest source for info
YOU HAVE TO READ THIS...DONT BE FOOLED.......1999-01-11
WHEN BYING THE BOOK IT MAY LOOK WONDERFULL BECAUSE OF ITS COVER AND PICTURES BUT DONT BE FOOLED THE CONTENT IS MOSTLY HOGWASH AND THE ONLY THING WORTH READING IN THIS BOOK ARE THE SUB TITLES.THE PICTURES ARE NICE,EVEN SO,THE CONTENT IS NOT SUFFECIENT.THE ERRORS ARE ATROTIOS AND MORE OF HER LIFE WOULD BE ACCEPTABLE BUT MY GOD,A WHOLE CHAPTER ON A NOTE SHE WROTE AND THE STORY BEHIND THE LEETTER TO A TEACHER.A PARAGRAPH ABOUT HER LIFE I WAS NOT HAPPY,OFF CORCE,I' EXAGERATING ABOUT THE PARAGRAPH ON HER LIFE,BUT PLEASE..THIS GUY CAN'T WRITE A BIOGRAFY...IT SHUOLD BE TITLED...THINGS THAT DONT REALLY MATTER ABOUT ALANIS AND NO BIOGRAPHY.DO YOUR SELF A FAVOUR AND RATHER SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR A MORE IMFORMATIVE BOOK.THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR ALANIS FANS. NEEDLES TO SAY,ALANIS DESERVES MUTCH MORE THAN THIS

This is the first Alanis bio book. It has a lot of fantastic pictures, and the info is accurate and pretty interesting. However, the info is concise, so if you want a lot of detailed, cool stuff, read Paul Cantin's book (it's a 10.) It's a colourful addition to any Alanis collection.

The Story Of Alanis Morissette.......1998-08-06
This is a book of Alanis mostly for pictures. They are good quality, huge, and many are full color. However the writing is not that thorough. Really all you need to know is read the back of the book ten times, and you will have read the whole book. The writing is actually really sucky, and she covers her days on Nickelodeon in one paragraph. Here is that paragraph: Alanis landed herself a starring role on the Nickelodeon cable tv shoe "You Can't Do That On Television" at the ripe old age of ten. As she would years later tell "Rollingstone" magazine, "It was a good, stupid, sarcastic kind of show. Very obnoxious and very tongue in cheek." That is all she wrote. STUPID and BORING! Especially that part about being the "ripe old age of ten." It's an excellent picture bio though.
Too many pictures to little info...........1998-07-28
This book is a good book if you like pictures but if you don't it sucks it has way to little info to be a great book like Alanis Morissete A Biography from Paul Cantin
Pretty good for those who don't know much about her........1998-05-25
When I got this book it pretty much blew me away because I didn't know anything about her. But now I know that it's basic stuff any self-respecting fan should know. The pictures are great, though, and die-hard fans might even want to take it apart to tack on their walls.
alanis is worth it.......1997-12-13
i think that any book about alanis is worth buying im a majore fan. this book pretty much tells the basic info but it does have great (crazy)pictures of alanis
A great book about a great girl.......1997-06-13
I liked this book a lot more than the others written about Alanis. The information is pretty basic, and most die-hard Alanis fans like me would already know most of the stuff. Still, it's a wonderful book and it's definitely worth owning
