In Anne Ursu's gracefully layered first novel, Spilling Clarence, a fire at a psychopharmaceutical plant releases a yellow cloud of psychoactive chemicals into the air of a sleepy college town named Clarence. Disturbing effects begin to show up in the townspeople, especially in the residents--mainly former professors--of the cleverly named Sunny Shadows retirement home. They find themselves remembering events and people they had long forgotten, or revisiting their favorite memories to find that new details have been recovered, a few of which they would rather have kept suppressed. Happiness is only sometimes a side effect of these startling recollections. In some ways, the chemical spill speeds along emotional processes that are already a staple of contemporary fiction: recovered memory, the discovery of unexpected connections, and the confrontation of the past. Some readers may find Ursu's plot too cinematic, but she is never glib or opportunistic. Like a good theorist, she pursues her idea to its logical, often surprising conclusion in the life of each of her characters. --Regina Marler

Gifted Writer/ gifted book.......2007-07-31
Spilling Clarence is one of those books I bought first for myself, adored, and bought again and again to give to people I love. Ursu's prose is as deep and moving as the memories she creates for her characters. A poignant and satisfying read!
Great concept...but failure to deliver.......2007-04-04
I really wanted to like this book.I tried hard to follow the ins and outs of it, but it was confusing going from present to the past with out any indication of which was which. great premise but this author did not pull it off.
The best part of the book is the thought that this could really happen in today's world. It makes one wonder that if it did happen, would the town be told.
I've seen others compare it to Time Traveler's Wife. i do not agree, you always knew where you were with that book.
this book is original and kooky and quirky but the author tried too hard IMHO.
Fabulous: induces laughter and tears.......2006-07-01
If you liked Time Travelers Wife, you will love this.
Ursu's use of language is moving and fun. I was laughing in one scene then moved to near tears just 5 pages later.
It's a true gem of a novel.
Loving this novel.......2006-02-17
This is a rich, moving and inventive book which absolutely sparkles. You won't forget it, and you'll be glad you picked it up.
Amazing work by a new author.......2003-09-15
This book is incredible. I was intrigued first by the title and then even further by the synopsis on the jacket. What would happen if all your memories came back to you as if you were living them all over again? If everything you saw or or smelled or did in the present reminded you of all moments small and large in your past. And is what you remember exactly as it really happened? Are our memories trustworthy, or are we rewriting them for better or worse even as they happen? It's amazing the way the author addresses these questions through the characters, and makes you question your own memories. Right from the start, you are there with these people holding your breath during the "spill" which isn't really a spill, but a release of a chemical into the atmosphere as one of the characters points out. She draws you in and you can't help but get lost in your own memories just as the characters do in the book. As you follow these people as they fight to find their way back to the present, and then struggle to move on after reliving their lives through their memories, you see how their memories have shaped and controlled their lives all along. And how do we break free of the binds that are our memories? Read the book and you may discover the answer for yourself. When I was finished I was so disappointed to find out it was her first book because I couldn't wait to read anything else she had written. Well now there's "Disapparation of James" also a very intriguing book, and I highly recommend that one as well.
Product Description
Haunting, heartbreaking and, at turns, very funny. It's about regret, loss, love and, most particularly, the power of our memories.

Very nice ending to the Texas series.............2005-08-04
Luke Brand is one of the illegitimate cousins of the very large Brand family and he comes to find Quinn, Texas the home he never knew he needed.
Although it is difficult to believe that I have read all of the preceding Texas Brand books already, this last installment delivers the fabulous story lines I have come to depend on from Maggie Shayne!
I am a huge fan of Ms. Shayne's vampire and witch books and decided to give this series a try as a result. I found I could not put them down! I am off to start the Oklahoma Brands now!
If you want excitement and great storylines, then this series and Maggie Shayne are just for you!
:).......2001-06-18
Another GREAT Texas Brand book! If you have been reading the series than you know that Grant and Sara's father was a bigomist. He was married to two different women at the same time. He had two kids with one woman and five kids with the other. We learn in this book that he also had a long time affair with yet another woman, and this woman gave birth to a son-Luke Brand.
Luke has been isolated his whole life, but after a good friend dies he realizes that he wants more than his solitary life, so he heads to Texas to meet his half siblings and cousins. The Brands are thrilled to have Luke among there family and soon he decides to stay in Texas. Luke is remodeling the house that he rents and soon he will buy it at auction. Luke's plans are threatened when Jasmine and her son Baxtor show up claiming the house to be theirs.
Luke soon develops feelings for both Jasmine and her son. Luke knows that they are in serious trouble and he wants to help. Jasmine does not want to involve Luke or the rest of the Brands into her messy troubles (she obviously knows nothing about the Brand family). The decision may be taken out of Jasmines hands when she finds herself in over her head.
This is a great addition to the Texas Brand series. I love Luke, Jasmine, and Baxter. It was also nice to read about the rest of the Brand family again. This book has everything-suspense, romance, and family. And just when you think that the trouble has ended it starts all over again. I read this from cover to cover before putting it down. Thank You Maggie Shayne for another great Brand book.

Quite a pleasant read........2007-01-28
An excellent book, easy to read in one full day if you don't pull yourself away from it. I purchased this book from a local used bookstore I originally entered looking for 3001 (to complete the series...I mean, I MUST have some closure here no matter how poor the reviews are of the finale). They didn't have 3001 so I looked through his other titles, and stubled along 9 Billion Names. I figured it would keep me occupied until I was able to find another book I would enjoy for an extended period of time. I now have to go back to the store and find another book because I'm nearly finished with this one because it is so reader-friendly. Brings back memories of grade-school with short-stories...ahh...good-times.
Arthur C. Clarke's best short stories.......2001-12-23
Arthur C. Clarke is best known for his novels, especially "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Rendezvous with Rama," which each spawned three sequels. But throughout his early career in the 1950s and 1960s, the tail end of science fiction's "golden age," Clarke was more successful as a writer of short fiction. This book collects his best stories, or at least his own favorites. As Clarke himself acknowledges in his introduction, "Every author must have his favorite stories, though he would often be hard put to give reasons for his preferences. Sometimes these may be completely illogical--or at least unliterary. A story written at a time and place associated with pleasant memories may be more highly rated, in retrospect, than a much better tale provoked by unhappiness or penury--the two great sponsors of art."
But Clarke's choices largely jibe with mine. They are drawn from five earlier collections: "Expedition to Earth" (1953), "Reach for Tomorrow" (1956), "The Other Side of the Sky" (1959), "Tales of Ten Worlds" (1962), and "The Wind from the Sun" (1972). Here you will find "The Sentinel," which Clarke and director Stanley Kubrick expanded into the epic "2001." And the often anthologized "The Star," in which an astronomical discovery challenges a believer's faith. And "Superiority," a parable about too much reliance on technological innovation. And "Death and the Senator," which is perhaps not quite science fiction, about power coming to terms with mortality. And the title story, a whimsical yet disturbing speculation about humankind's purpose in the divine plan. And . . . twenty more gems of short fiction. (The only omission that I regret is "Hate," which appears only in "Tales of Ten Worlds.")
Despite a hardcover re-release in 1996, this excellent collection is still hard to find. But I still recommend it over "The Collected Stories of Arthur C. Clarke" (2001) because, while that collection contains all the stories in this collection, "Nine Billion Names" presents the stories in their original form while "Collected Stories" is rife with editorial and typographical errors and omissions.
A thought-provoking read, especially now..........1999-06-14
It is 15 years since I read this book. The short story referred to in the title has been replaying itself in my mind, intiated by talk of the Human Genome project, and also by our proximity to the new Millenium. I have searched extensively for a copy of this book (I think my Mum threw out the old one!) without success. A great thought provoking read.

Great Stories.......2001-05-27
Arthur C. Clarke, though known primarily for his novels, started out as a writer of short stories, and his best (the title short, The Star, The Sentinel, etc.) are regarded as some of the best in the field. This now out of print collection gathers together many of his greatest short works, and is a worthy addition to your collection if you don't own them already in some other form. There are a lot of Clarke short story collections out there (including the newer and more comprehensive Collected Stories), so if you already have a number of them then you don't really have any incentive to get this (if you can find it), but if you are lacking in Arthur's short stories this book, if handy, is a good place to start.
Not a short-story fan..........2000-04-27
...but the short-story "The Nine Billion Names of God" is my favorite of all time.
11 pages, five minutes. Well worth the price of the entire book.
Some of the best from a master author.......2000-01-24
Arthur C. Clarke really shines in this collection of short stories... It makes you want to read more; I would also suggest Tales from the White hart, Expedition to Earth, and many more!

This volume is of special interest -- included are a wide range of classic stories, including the title story, "Jupiter Five," "The Deep Range," "Second Dawn," and the earliest of the splendidly comic narratives told by Harry Purvis for the benefit of the denizens of the White Hart.

I found this recording very entertaining and plan on buying the other volumes as soon as I can lay my hands on them. The readings are excellent, and I have spent much time sitting next to my stereo, simply taking it all in. A wonderful buy...

Customer Reviews:
Don't Waste Your Time.......2007-08-01
I found this book preachy and patriarchal, and without any concrete steps for actually leading worship. Instead the author gets bogged down in endless scripture citations and examples of his own wonderfulness. A quick read, but still a waste of time. I won't be looking to this author for help in this area again!
Thorough and engaging.......2002-08-06
Imagine this... a small church in the country that has been singing the SAME SONGS for 10 years. Imagine that the pianist is in her 60's and unfamiliar with much contemporary worship. Imagine that there is no one to lead the singings. Now imagine that a 24 year old girl is asked to help lead worship with her guitar and singing. Enter a multitude of problems. Obviously, the first thing I want to do is teach some new songs, but how? I want to submit to the Pastor, but still have some say in the selection of songs and styles. This was MY scenario and I had never led worship before. I had many ideas, but no idea how to make them work, and saw more obstacles than possibilities. I ordered 2 books by this author hoping he could help, and he did. I could not believe the number of problems that he addressed, or how graciously he dealt with them. He had already handled scenarios that I couldn't have imagined had I tried. I read the book every chance I had, then read it again. Over 3 years time, I have implemented MANY of the ideas presented here. Now our church knows hundreds of songs, and has sung styles from Spanish and Jewish to African worship with hand drums. The people don't look bored and they sing their hearts out! It has just been a completely awesome transformation and I do owe a great deal of credit to Mr. Kraeuter - if you ever read this review, let me say, "Thank you so much".
This book is a staple for those who lead worship.......1998-10-19
An invaluable reference for Worship Leaders and pastors. Tom lays things out in a clear and concise way and leaves you with gems that you can take with you to your church. A must have.

Not Just For Baking.............2006-01-20
We really love the recipe using buttermilk to extend butter. It makes a lower fat/calorie spread that my kids love. In fact, not one of the many recipes that I have tried from this book has been bad. My kids have loved every one of them. The recipes are written very clearly with the author's tips included. There are many recipes that are not "baking" recipes such as spreads, dips, soups, salads & salad dressings; main dishes such as stews; fried chicken & fish, stroganoff, desserts such as puddings & sherbets plus many more traditional "baking" recipes like breads; muffins; soufflees; cakes, etc. The history of buttermilk and what to look for is very informative. This is a "must-have" if you love buttermilk and a great cookbook to expand your cooking if your are unfamiliar with using buttermilk in baking & cooking.
Lucky find.......2003-11-24
I found this book on a remainder table and couldn't resist it. I bake often, and once you experience baking with buttermilk, you'll want to expand your baking recipes to include lots with buttermilk. It's a great baking ingredient (including the dried buttermilk powder).
With the success of the baking recipes, I tried some of the "smothered" recipes. Also great.
The recipes in this book are mostly easy and contain typical ingredients. They are also crowd pleasers. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
Interesting and Delicious.......2000-07-30
This is a wonderful cookbook. For those of us who thought buttermilk was just a tangy milk product full of fat, THINK AGAIN. In reality it is better for you than regular milk and has less fat. It makes recipes tastier and better for you too. This book starts out with the history of buttermilk and takes us in to why it is so good for us. Very interesting reading. The author gives us ideas in the introduction on how to make special cooking butter that saves calories time and money. Then come the recipes. They are easy to read and follow. They are delicious. I am looking forward to using this book for many years.

As of 2004 over 90 retailers have sold a Barbie exclusive at one time. This exhaustive book includes all of those retailers and their treasures, and many dolls feature close-ups for ease in identification. Over 500 dolls not shown in previous editions have been added to this volume, along with 60 new fashions. Some of the latest retailers to join the exclusives bandwagon include Big Lots, Dollar General, Hard Rock Cafe, Mary Kay Cosmetics, the Mattel Store, See's Candies, and Walgreen's. It's author Augustyniak's best work yet.

Collector's Encyclopedia Of Barbie Doll Exclusives: Identification & Values 1972-2004 .......2007-01-16
The Collector's Encyclopedia Of Barbie Doll Exclusives is a great reference to the value of different types of Barbies. I was a little dissapointed that the Holiday Barbies and Bob Mackie Barbies are not listed in the book but I was pleased, otherwise. I would recommend this book.
Collector's Encyp. of Barbie Doll Exclusivies/1972-2004.......2006-07-20
Having read the other collector's encyclopedia's written by this author, this one is also a beautiful collection of the Barbie doll's one may want to know about and/or collect. The pictures are well done and the descriptions very clear and understandable. At a book store, before even my first purchase of these books, I skimmed other books stating they had what I was looking for, but none compared to Michael J. Augustyniak's. Through his books, I have been able to purchase Barbies at what I know is a fair and good price for my own collection. Very good resource book. Highly recommended.

"Exactly what I was looking for!".......2003-10-07
I have looked at many many books trying to find one that would help me to easily identify Barbie. Well folks, this is it! The pictures are wonderful, brightly colored and large enough to see detail. This is a "Must Have" book if you are a collector. (or if you buy used dolls to make up an OOAK) Well worth the money spent. I highly recommend!
Wonderful Encyclopedia for Barbie collectors!.......2001-10-24
This book is the most wonderful Encyclopedia about Barbie dolls. It has so many dolls listed with descriptions, prices and pics of the dolls in their boxes. Many pink boxes, OOAK Mattel dolls and collectibles. Pictures are nice, they are from the doll in box, and there are closes on some dolls.
If you need information on Pink Boxes, this book is the best!!! There are a new version 'cos this is not updated, the dolls showed ends on 1999. There are no 2000 dolls or 2001. But there are a second edition, so search for the new edition!
Good Book.......2001-03-30
This book was very informative regarding dolls and values. I wish it would have had more of the "Special Edition" models and values though. Lots of pictures that are a good size for viewing and easy to see.
This book is put together very well, the index pages in the back make it easy to locate the dolls that you are looking for. I am a beginner and this book was very helpful for me to put a value on the dolls that I already have.
And I Thought I Knew Barbie!.......2000-04-06
I just received the COLLECTOR'S ENCYCLOPEDIA of BARBIE by JMichael Augustyniak. I thought I knew a lot about the value of eachdoll, I sell them and buy them regularly right here on amazon.com auctions. However, I opened the pages of this book and it is fantastic and a must for any serious collector. All the photos are in color, by date, series, it is all in this book. You will be amazed that some Barbies are valued in high 5 figures! I'm so glad I have this reference. Everyone who is interested in Barbie should! END

Book Description
Niermeyer's Mediae Latinitatis Lexicon Minus is a highly practical lexicon, providing researchers, teaching staff and students in the field of Medieval History with concise, essential information.
This new edition is still the "compendious lexicon for rapid information" envisaged by Niermeyer, but current entries and definitions have been revised and new entries have been added. Furthermore, the dictionary is now enhanced with German definitions and therefore provides French, English and German translations for every entry of a Medieval Latin concept. All entries are contextualized with relevant text passages.
In view of the new entries and additional German definitions, the new edition is bound into two durable hardback volumes.
The Niermeyer Lexicon Minus has proved to be invaluable to medievalists for almost 50 years and is an indispensable working tool for academic libraries.
The revised Lexicon is published simultaneously by Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden and Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft (WBG), Darmstadt (WBG only distributes to its members).

Latin to English/German/French?.......2006-03-28
It's amazing how many entries are lacking from this two volume dictionary -- each of which is hefty. You'll definitely be primarily using a real Classical lexicon like Oxford; when entries are present they suggest translations of Latin phrases by English, French and German phrases which may be useful to you polyglots. Trying to translate Athanasius Kircher I had much more luck with my little Cassell Latin Dictionary than with this -- at a fraction of the cost.
Product Description
Volume 2: M-Z. Translations of Latin words into French, English, and German. Also includes an Index Fontium. From the introduction to the Index Fontium: The Index Fontium lists all the editions of sources cited in the Dictionary. It enables the user to trace the complete bibliographical data of the works, and, consequently, to check the quotations and study them in a wider context. At the same time it presents a survey of the whole of the source material, reflecting the specific aims of the Dictionary. And finally the Index Fontium may be used independently of the Dictionary as a repertoire containing a substantial part of the printed sources of medieval history up till A.D. 1200.

Book Description
This large, lavish journey through the art of the 19th-century French landscape offers a host of masterful works, among them Corot's Forest of Fontainbleau, Millet's End of the Hamlet of Gruchy, Renoir's Rocky Crags at L'Estaque, and Monet's Rue de la Bavolle, Honfleur. As is often the case, however, some of the most wonderful things to see are also the least expected: rare and unusual monotypes by Degas, three states of a softground etching by Pissarro, and numerous works by some of their lesser-known but equally important contemporaries. Unlike previous books on the topic, Impressions of Light presents a unique and stunningly complete group of work that introduces a new level of complexity into the discussion of French landscapes. Rather than considering the landscape as a steady, linear development and the product of a single medium, it takes into account the many crosscurrents and intersecting developments in French art, from the Barbizon school through the post-Impressionist period. In addition, it studies the landscape in a variety of media--painting, prints, and photography--exploring both the individual artists' perceptions and the ways in which they influenced each other. With over 80 paintings and 70 works on paper from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's collections, and published to accompany a major exhibition, Impressions of Light encompasses more than 100 years and 56 artists working in a dozen different media. It holds the broadest possible view, yet never loses sight of the extraordinary intricacy that makes the landscape so enduringly appealing.

Come Visit Beautiful French Landscapes.......2003-06-21
The book Impressions of Light by George Shackleford et al is a companion book to an art exhibit of works from Boston's Museum of Fine Art. The paintings are landscapes created by France's greatest nineteenth century painters and photographers. Most of the painters are Impressionists but others schools are represented as well. The book also contains sketches which were part of the exhibit. The sketches, as well as the written commentary which accompanies many of them, allows the reader to better understand the creative process of the painters. The factual information in the book is very extensive and helps the readers see more in the works than normally meets the eye. Perhaps what is most interesting about this book and the collection of paintings and photographs included it is the plethora of lesser known works by these great artists. Readers, especially those who have been fortunate to view the exhibit, will be transported to the settings of these great works and gain a deeper appreciation of these great artists and photographers.
A spectaculrly beautifully, illustrated art history.......2002-11-15
Impressions Of Light: The French Landscape From Corot To Monet is a lavishly, richly, spectaculrly beautifully, illustrated art history showcasing one hundred years of French art and 56 French artists. Included area wealth of rare and unusual monotypes by Degas, three states of a softground etching by Pissarro, and numerous illustrative works by lesser-known by equally significant contemporaries. Of particular interest is the attention paid to intersecting developments in French art from the Barbizon school through post-Impressionism. Enhanced with more than 80 paintings and 70 works on paper drawn from the MFA collections, showcasing the French landscape through painting, prints, and photography, Impressions Of Light deftly explores individual artists' perceptions as well as the manifold ways that influenced each other. Impressions Of Light will prove to be a welcome and much appreciated contribution to Art History collections in general, and 19th Century French landscape art and photography in particular.

It's all about interpretation........2002-03-19
Truth is found in the details. By logically organizing the paper trail scattered through several countries, written in at least four different languages, and held by a variety of individuals, Trienens establishes the facts of the case. Whether or not readers agree with his interpretation of these facts is another issue. I don't believe anyone withholds their sympathy from the Gutmann family or anyone who suffered from the events of World War II. However, sympathy should not blind readers to the facts of the case, including the 1967 signed statement that upon payment from the German government, the Gutmanns would not pursue any further compensation. While the attention to detail can at times interfere with the narrative, in the end the author sheds light on the complicated process of Nazi-era provenance research and reparation -- and the role of the press in shaping America's ideas about this sensitive issue.
Disappointing.......2001-03-07
When I picked this book up, I thought it was a great find. I read a great deal of non-fiction of this type, and the opening pages were very promising. But I ultimately found it disappointing, even offensive. Trienens sinks the book in legalistic detail, focusing so much on the civil suit that he loses sight of the fascinating larger story. Worse, he seems to regard the Goodmans -- descendants of the owner who died in the Holocaust -- as little more than opportunists, and displays little sympathy or respect for their family's tragedy. And while he claims to be taking an objective view, over and over he interprets facts in a light most favorable to the defendant in the suit -- his client. This book is a badly missed opportunity. I would love to see someone else do it again.
Superb insider account of ownership of a Degas artwork.......2000-11-21
"Landscape with Smokestacks" is a beautiful "monotype" created by Edgar Degas around 1890 and currently on view at the Art Institute of Chicago. Degas smeared oil colors on a metal plate in large diagonal strokes with a rag, then placed a paper on the plate and used a press to transfer the image to the paper. As Degas described it, "The result is a picture on paper more luminous than if the artist had worked directly on the paper." He used fingerprints for texture at the horizon of the scene, and then dabbed on pastel colors in little dots of yellow or pink. Green striations of monotype ink were matched with green pastel. Prussian blue pastel was smeared into the sky to suggest smoke coming from the nearly eradicated monotype chimney.
The family that owned the work of art perished in the holocaust. They had sent the art to a dealer in Paris, either for safekeeping or on consignment to be sold. If it was sent for safekeeping, it may have been stolen by the Nazis (especially Goering) who were looting art throughout the occupied countries of Europe during the Second World War. If it was sold on consignment, however, then the heirs of the family (who brought suit in the United States to recover the painting) would be out of luck. Their only recourse would be to find the Parisian art dealer and sue him for the proceeds. But maybe the painting was stolen, in which case the heirs might have a claim to get it back. After the painting left the art dealer in Paris, it wound up in Switzerland, and went through the hands of various purchasers, finally winding up in a private art collection in Chicago. The owner donated it to the Art Institute, and the real legal battle began -- between the heirs who claimed the painting had been stolen, and the Art Institute, which of course wanted to keep it (though the Institute would have returned it to the heirs if the Institute had been convinced that the painting indeed had been stolen).
Although the author, Howard Trienens, represented the defendant art collector in Chicago, I found his book exceptionally fair in its meticulous treatment of the provenance (sales history) of the Degas painting and in describing the negotiations that ensued between the heirs and the Art Institute. Like the Degas painting itself, the book is a little gem.
Book Description
Edgar Degas is regarded, above all, as a painter of the human figure and of city life, and yet both his early notebooks and the practice of his later years attest to his consistent interest in landscape painting. In tracing Degas's response to landscape, including, most notably, his visits to the small resort of Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme, in Picardy, and in closely analysing his painterly practice, this book cogently reassesses the importance of landscape painting to his career. By revealing Degas's little-known love of this genre, it challenges our assumptions about one of the giants of Impressionist art.

A hundred works by Degas provides a new focus on this aspect of his vision and influence........2007-01-04
There have been so many books on the market covering the life and works of Degas that we're almost hesitant to recommend yet another, but what makes Edgar Degas: The Last Landscapes stand out from the crowd is its in-depth focus on a surprisingly little-known aspect of his work: his scenery of northern France and the small town of his childhood. Here he experimented with painting and print-making techniques and used his sketchbook drawings to integrate landscape painting into his more notable works. A hundred works by Degas provides a new focus on this aspect of his vision and influence.
