Book Description
THE IMPOVERISHED, DESOLATE mountain regions of the Abruzzo during Mussolini's reign provide the backdrop for the three greatest novels by Ignazio Silone, one of the twentieth century's most important writers. In Fontamara, Bread and Wine, and The Seed Beneath the Snow - presented together for the first time in English to mark the centenary of the author's birth - Silone narrates the struggles of the cafoni, the farmers and peasants of his native Abruzzo, against poverty, natural disasters, and totalitarianism.
The first novel in the series, Fontamara, is a political fable that portrays the bitter trials of the villagers of Pescina as they battle with landowners who have appropriated their only source of water. First published from his exile in Zurich in 1933, and banned in his own country, the novel was translated into twenty languages and won Silone instant international literary fame.
Silone's masterpiece, Bread and Wine, introduces the semi-autobiographical character Pietro Spina, an anti-Fascist revolutionary who returns to his homeland after fifteen years in exile. He seeks refuge among the Abruzzo peasants by posing as the priest Don Paolo Spada.
Pietro's story continues in The Seed Beneath the Snow, Silone's personal favorite in the trilogy. Pietro Spina flees again and, with the police in close pursuit, is taken in by his grandmother Donna Maria Vincenza. Though comfortably settled in Italian bourgeois society, she jeopardizes her own life in order to protect him.

Good for Practice.......2006-06-12
Fontamara (at least) has another virtue, in addition to those cited by other reviewers: it's a pretty good text for practicing your Italian. Fairly simple language, straightforward grammar. Some street-talk and jargon but not a lot and hey, that's what learning is about. Some cute bits of peasant black humor to keep things moving. Not the edition here, of course: this one is in English. But there is a nifty Italian edition available from Manchester University Press in England (ISBN 0-7190-0662-7) with helpful notes and an excellent glossary by Judy Rawson.
brilliant, non-didactic political fiction.......2005-03-05
Silone's trilogy of novels about the rural Abruzzo region of Italy under fascist rule is beautifully written (and beautifully translated by Alexander Stille--a bad translaot can ruin a great work of literature). I can't quite put my finger out what it is, but there is something captivating about the prose. The three novels in this collection are also deeply political--but without being didactic, which is no easy feat. If you're trying to convey a message through fiction, it's all too easy to fall into using cardboard cut-out characters who hit you over the head with a message. This never happens in Silone's work, not once. Many authors, for instance, would be tempted to romanticize the cafoni, the down-trodden peasants of the area. Far from doing this, Silone shows the ways in which their oppression has made many of the cafoni bitter, greedy and envious. Neither is Silone's depiction of the cafoni entirely negative though--some of them are remarkable (particularly Berardo in the first novel Fontamara) and most are too grounded to be taken in by ideological abstractions. The main character of the second two novels, Pietro Spina, is a decent man, a former member of the Communist Party who has gone underground and, as he has had time to reflect on things, has drifted away from the party, seeing how its authoritiarianism and dogmatism stands at odds with the ideals it proclaims--but Spina still holds onto his socialist beliefs after some fashion. As Stille explains in his introduction (the first introduction to major literary work I haven't found dull), this reflects Silone's own life experiences. Interestingly though, Spina never becomes a mouthpiece for Silone's own Christian socialist beliefs--they are articulated in more subtle ways throughout the trilogy. This is a political novel in which there is no black and white, but only shades of grey; and in which human friendship is more important than anything else.
a major work.......2002-01-27
this major work deserves to be better known. it depicts the struggles of the people of Italy for human survival, under terrible circumstances.

Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This is made from more than one comic title, so the first part, Titans/Young Justice, has some obvious manga stylings. The later part is more straightforward, and involves battles on other planets, laying waste to a world, ancient gods, and a Sun-Eater, to top it all off.
At the core though, is emotion - mostly centred around dead and not so dead girls, and women. With a funeral cameo by Superman and Batman, just because they can.
Back from the dead, for better or worse.......2007-03-26
Way back when, Teen Titan Donna Troy, the original Wonder Girl, met an untimely demise. This crossover between the Teen Titans and the Outsiders finds that Troy is alive and kicking, literally, as the Titans and Outsiders seek to bring her back into the fold. This confusing and convoluted tale is scripted mainly by Phil Jimenez, who is better known as the superb artist for Infinite Crisis as well as his Otherworld series and segments of Grant Morrison's run on New X-Men, and while it has it's fair share of action and intrigue, it just doesn't work. The overall story is confusing, and while Donna Troy is an important character in the DC universe mythos, I'm not entirely sure she's worthy of her own "return from the dead" comic special. The art in this TPB is quite good though, featuring pencils from Jimenez and Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez is what makes The Death and Return of Donna Troy worth checking out alone. Other than that though, there's no other reason why you should bother with this unless you're a die hard Troy or Titans fan, or are collecting all the trades that lead up to Infinite Crisis.
Meh...........2006-05-03
Now I know Donna Troy is a very important person to the Titan's and to the rest of the DCU, and I might be harsh by saying this, but her death was about 10 times more entertaining then her return. The first half has action and great art, good story telling. The second half is nothing more then a history of Donna and an odd telling of a story loosely based on Greek mythology.
An interesting thought was presented to me about this book, my friend complains that no one in comics stays dead. To a degree he is right and it can be a problem (I'm not a supporter of the return of Hal Jordan), but some characters people just miss. He is relatively new to comics and I've started him on Young Justice and worked him through all the new Titan's books out. I'm curious as to whether or not he'll change his mind on the subject, considering he's become really attached to Superboy. He's going to have an interesting book to read when September rolls around and it could be interesting to see if he still holds true to his thoughts. I on the topic of Donna Troy, probably couldn't care less, and I'm a fan of the old Titans like Arsenal and Nightwing, and a big fan of the new Titans, and a huge fan of Kyle Rayner who she dated. So it makes me wonder why anyone from the outside would care at all.
What's all the fuss?.......2006-03-17
I liked Wonder Girl/Donna Troy in the silver age. She had as much personality as Aqualad or Speedy. Not saying a lot there, but she was a solid teen sidekick and member of the Teen Titans.
I liked her a lot more in The New Teen Titans. Marv Wolfman and George Perez did much to turn her into a human character with concerns that readers could get behind.
Then, somewhere along the way, she became DC's soap opera character.
She went through some image and name changes, returned to her roots, then died.
And now...
comes back...
...for some reason.
I just don't see it as all that big a deal.
The first half of this TPB is so hard to follow, so easy to fall into a stupor over, that I felt cheated.
The second half got better, since more heroes from the DCU entered the scene, and the last quarter or so, (as reflected on the TPB's cover) heavily involved members of the DCU and the Teen Titans.
That's the payoff of this book.
And it tells me that this story could have been told in a better fashion if it was done in a shorter fashion.
One issue of about 40 pages could have been enough.
Instead we get a lot of wasted pages, a lot of confusing and boring build up for the return of a B list hero.
Look, I give one solid star for the art alone. I'd give MORE stars for the art if more pages of this book actually mattered.
As it stands, I can only really get behind the last 30 or so pages of the TPB fully, less so for the 10 to 20 pages that lead up to them. And I can, in no way, support the first half of this TPB. You pretty much have to read them to get to the end.
But Jimenez should have written a more compact, concise story, not some drawn-out personal vision.
Book Description
Rejoin Myron Tany and the crew of the space freighter Glicca as they ply their way from planet to planet, star to star, and adventure to adventure. From one world to the next, they will chase their dreams. Jack Vance has been writing for more than fifty years, and in 1997 was honored as a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America. He is the author of the World Fantasy Awardwinning Lyonnesse series, and the Hugo and Nebula Awardwinning The Last Castle. From one world to the next they will chase their dreams in this sequel to Ports of Call.
Customer Reviews:
A satisfying and wistful ending to a spectacular career.......2007-03-07
This is the most recent and final book by Jack Vance and it is the sequel to Ports of Call (so buy both books and read the other one first; I imagine they will be combined in future as they are a single work). For reasons below, I consider it one of his finest novels and absolutely required for anyone who has read more than a dozen Vance books.
The story here is carried forward by stops in a journey, each episode sketched with ease. The action, worlds and characters are new, yet they deliberately evoke his past themes. From a few pages, fans may recall entire past novels. Vance can therefore write sparingly, and yet marshal a many-hued nuance that is rich and satisfying.
Working thus, Vance delivers a single story that tours the best of his voluminous life's work, illuminated now from the full bloom of his perspective in older age. Dispensing with incidentals, he comes to the essence of each situation and communicates a total world-view that transcends and unites his earlier individual works.
By the end, you get it... and you are filled with an ineluctable joy and sadness. It's a feeling that only deepens when you realize that Vance's last novel was both a masterpiece and an endpiece to his career, and that you have experienced his great art for the very final time.
Jack Vance did not write this book.......2005-12-13
Lurulu is a sequel to the book "Ports of Call". It was announced a long time ago, and at one point there was another author's name attached to the sequel. Now that it has finally come out, it is obvious that some hack took Vance's scant notes or outline and filled it in as best he could. Many of the characters of Ports of Call are summarily dealt with in a manner very unlike any other Vance series. Ports of Call hinted at certain things happening to the three girls in Moncrief's show and that the crew would have to do something rash to save them from a "fate worse that death". This is completely absent. What happened to the Captain's lurulu on Fluter? Sad to say this current book is a vast disappointment.
Klausner is a parasite!.......2005-10-15
Harriet Klausner, Amazon's # 1 reviewer, clearly has no idea what Vance is about and I am happy to see that the bulk of Vance readers are discerning and intelligent enough to see that her review is a cynical attempt to suck up more votes by gushing away aimlessly about every new relase that comes out. Bah! What is even more amusing and tragic is that Klausner, perhaps chagrined by criticism of her review by the estimable James Windle 'jimbo', totally changed her review in a desperate attempt to garner more votes. Hahaha. Go away Harriet, you parasite! Your infinite mediocrity will be dealth with accordingly.
As for the book, it is readable and at times amusing, but it is certainly no Maeske: Thaery, Trullion: Alastor, nor Showboat World - less known than some other Vance novels perhaps, but truly brilliant works nonetheless.
Fine Coda to Great SF Literary Career?.......2005-08-15
I've read Jack Vance's work off and on for years now, but it's only until I stumbled upon "Lurulu" - most likely his last novel - that I realize now that he may be one of science fiction's finest literary stylists. "Lurulu", the sequel to "Ports of Call", is more of an engaging fictional wanderjahr across the galaxy, than your typical space opera replete with starships blasting away at each other and mysterious alien cultures. Once more First Officer Myron Tany and Captain Adair Maloof are the main protagonists and crew of the merchant ship Glicca, as she travels from planet to planet in the Gaean Reach. Tany has some unexpected good fortune thrusted upon him towards the end of this novel, and without disclosing how "Lurulu" ends, will say that it does end at a rather surprising, but satisfying note. If this may be Jack Vance's last novel, then I think it is is merely a fine coda to a great career writing elegant tales of science fiction and fantasy.
sparkling entertainment.......2005-08-13
Vance modestly describes this book as containing the left-over material from Ports of Call. The stories are not new to a reader of Vance - a hunt for a sex criminal, a foolish religious sect, a dramatic performance that goes wrong, these we have seen before.
What delights about this book, however, what prompts me to give it five stars, is the language. Vance has always been known for his startling turns of phrase, his carved and graven prose, but this is the best and most consistent example of it that I can remember seeing. Where in previous books the wit came in flashes, here I saw the full illuminations.

Two Books in One: Ports of Call & Lurulu
Customer Reviews:
A fun read.......2005-05-24
This book is an anthology containing what will probably be Jack Vance's last two works of Science Fiction - PORTS OF CALL and LURULU (I've provided a scanned image of the SFBC book cover, which you can link to above). The two works generally focus on the space-faring adventures of Myron Tany. Myron graduates from university, where against his parents' wishes he concentrated his studies more on space-related topics, than on a purely practical business regimen. In fairly short order, he manages to obtain the captaincy of his eccentric and aging Aunt's spaceship (which she acquires via a defamation lawsuit), and sets out with her to search for a fountain of youth on a distant planet. The Aunt is easily swayed by good-looking suitors, and she eventually takes up with another in a string of false-intentioned suitors, who she replaces Myron with as Captain of her spaceship. Luckily, Myron is able to hook up a crew slot in the four-crew space-merchant ship GLICCA, and begins to travel to strange and distant ports of call throughout the Galaxy.
**** PORTS OF CALL (1996) - You can't help considering that Jack Vance was about 80 when he wrote this story. It is almost like going back in time, and reading a SciFi story from the 1960's. His deep vocabulary is quite impressive, and I found myself consulting a dictionary every few pages or so. Unfortunately, some of the technical areas don't fair so well - for example, the computer technology seems like something out of the late 1980's, and was basically out-of-date even before the book was written. There is one particular section of the book that is extremely engrossing; it involves Myron making the acquantance of a waitress during a visit to a tavern on a planet where taking of off-worlders' "pelts" is not unheard of... very eerie.
*** LURULU (2004) - Jack Vance was about 88 when he finished writing this story. While it is quite a bit shorter than PORTS OF CALL, it is consistent in quality. I found a few particular sections of the book to be of superb interest, and enjoyed the book to the point that I was sorry when I reached the end.
I recently read Jack Vance's Hugo-winning novella DRAGON MASTERS (1963), and it ranks with the best SciFi I've ever read... and now that I've had more of a sampling of his work, I'm becoming a big Jack Vance fan.

Book Description
Much has been written about Graham Greene's relationship to his Catholic faith and its privileged place within his texts. His early books are usually described as "Catholic Novels" - understood as a genre that not only uses Catholic belief to frame the issues of modernity, but also offers Catholicism's vision and doctrine as a remedy to the present crisis in Western civilization. Greene's later work, by contrast, is generally regarded as falling into political and detective genres. In this book, Mark Bosco argues that this is a false dichotomy created by a narrowly prescriptive understanding of the Catholic genre and obscures the impact of Greene's developing religious imagination on his literary art.

not my favorite piece o cake.......2007-06-13
i ordered this volume because i love the others. it does have the usual superb directions, photos and diagrams. but, aside from two impressive small quilts, the patterns in this book really did not attract me, and i am returning it.
amish quilts are formal, 'serious' and still extremely traditional quilts. whimsy is definitely not an amish quilting trait. i think the patterns in this book are not only below the usual level of this team's output, but even somewhat insulting to the supposed inspiration of the amish quilts.
however, tastes differ. anything these women write will be useful and informative to nearly every quilter. but i would recommend one of their other titles to a quilter who isn't familiar with piece o cake.
Great choice to try applique.......2007-03-23
This is my first Piece O'Cake book, and I've really enjoyed it. It's also the first time I've tried applique, and the directions are easy to follow.

Quilting Patterns, NOT Quilt Patterns.......2007-05-26
Oops! Shame on me for not paying attention to the product description! I assumed "Quilting Patterns" meant "Quilt Patterns" so was somewhat chagrined when book arrived. However, it's a keeper. Found brief comparison between Lancaster County Amish and Midwestern Amish Quilts to be quite interesting.
CHARMING AND INFORMATIVE.......2003-09-14
Knowing that we often get what we pay for, I give a 5 star rating to this book and author for being informative: providing information about Amish quilts from different geographical areas, giving basics on hand quilting...and for being reasonably priced. This book tends to offer something to new quilters and seasoned quilters, alike. The charming quilting designs, some of which are used in traditional quilting and not, are very well laid out and the authors are careful to ensure that designs are on ONE PAGE ONLY which allows the quilter to be able to lay out the book on a scanner, or a light box for tracing. I feel that I got more than my money's worth with this book, not only because of it's information and well laid out designs, but because of the books simple usability, that saves me time.
Complete details.......2003-05-22
This book gives complete details on HAND QULITING your Amish quilt and some general information about the colour/quilting/pattern combinations in black and white line drawings. Discusses the threads, batting thicknesses, how to copy the patterns, and includes information about quilting frames for a full roundup on the quilting scene.
As for which pattern to use with which type of quilt, the book breaks down the differences between the Lancaster PA Amish and the Midwestern Amish. Remember though this is geared all towards HAND quilting. For Machine Quilting see the Dover Pub, Amish Patterns for Machine Quilting which adapts these hand patterns for machines.
Really quite a nice book for the price.
Amish, pure and simple.......2001-07-12
Well laid out with design and information. A good book to have in your quilting library. Easy to follow directions for even the novice quilter. I've used this book to branch out and make quilts outside the traditinal Amish pallete with great success.

Nice Project book of Amish style quilts.......2001-06-18
With the title, I was hoping for a book full of pictures of authentic Amish quilts. Nope. This is a Rodale quilt project book, albeit of Amish-style quilts. The projects are nice and are for various levels of experience.
There is a square within a square project that is nice for beginners. There are other projects for beginners: an 81-patch, a split bar, broken dishes, Sunshine and Shadow, a Roman Stripe, and a double irish chain quilt. For the intermediate quilter, there's a Robbing Peter to pay Paul, Chinese Coins variation, a double nine patch (which I would call easy, but since it's on point, maybe it really should be considered intermediate) and a foundation-pieced Log Cabin. For advanced quilters, there's a double-sized pinwheel design they call Sparkle Plenty that is really pretty. The color choices made by the people who designed the projects are appropriate and yet colorful - updated Amish, I would say.
There are basic quilt making directions and some information on the Amish in the back of the book, and some basic quilting designs which can be copied to a size to fit your quilt.
It's a nice book for what it is. Probably of most value to beginners.

There are patterns (templates and instructions) for 80 quilts, but the book would be worth it just for the quilt photographs (of collectible older Amish quilts). The colors and design are fabulous -- this is really an art book as much as a quilting book.
In addition, there are essays describing aspects of Amish life, with photographs to illustrate, and an attempt is made to connect the patterns on the quilts with the features and landscape of Amish life -- the center diamond, for example, is compared to a field waiting to be harvested as viewed from a certain angle.
I will treasure this book for years to come and plan to make some quilts using it.
Amish Quilts.......2000-03-28
I recommend this book to any experienced or inexperienced quilter--especially those who are interested in the Amish people. It has excellent, easy to follow patterns that are all about the same size, and it includes some beautiful quilting designs that are also easy to follow and easy to use. The ideas for color schemes and traditional Amish patterns are very useful. I especially liked the way pictures were included in order to illustrate the origins of certain quilt designs. For instance, a picture of a barn window is included with the pattern that represents a barn window. I found the religious themes in the book, and in the quilts themselves, very interesting. I really enjoyed using this book, and I am very satisfied with the quilt that I made using the patterns and designs provided in the book. This book is a helpful guide to quiltmaking, and the cultural information it includes is a very interesting supplement to anyone interested in quilt history or Christianity.

Book Description
She's raw, she's real, she's Barbara Carlson, flying high as host of the #1 radio talk show in Minneapolis. "KSTP wanted a shock jock, a female Rush Limbaugh, a hormonal Howard Stern, someone who could rile the generally conservative 25-to-54-year-old males who would become my audience." Barbara Carlson more than rivals Oprah as she rides the rough road of her life through rape, emotional incest, domestic violence, alcoholism, the death of a child, Valium, obesity, marriage to the future governor of Minnesota -- and now she's rocking the world of talk radio.
"CARLSON WARY OF EX-WIFE'S BOOK-TO-BE," trumpeted the Star Tribune headline. Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson had good reason to be concerned. Barbara, his ex-wife, had already revealed the pet name for his most private part ("Oscar"). She has subsequently dubbed the penile implant of Pete Anderson, husband number two, "Dupont." Make no bones about it -- Barbara Carlson, all decked out in her trademark pearls, is up front and here to stay.
"Even at my most outrageous and most opinionated, I wasn't threatening. I mean, for heaven's sake, how much damage could an overweight, middle-aged woman on Prozac do?" Thus began The Barbara Carlson and Friends Show on KSTP radio, whose call letters, with a zippered crimson mouth, are now tattooed on her right buttock. "Who could be a more unlikely centerpiece than an aging, round-bodied wild thing who took on the boys' club that is talk radio with her grasp of politics and her knack for throwing almost everyone off guard?" The convent-educated, pill-popping socialite turns talk radio on its ear with steaming interviews from her hot tub every Friday morning, and a daily dish of sex and politics from the governor's ex-wife.
A suburban rich kid from a proper Minneapolis family, Barbara Jane Duffy waged a lifelong battle with her own elegant Mommie Dearest, who once confronted her daughter from the barrel of a shotgun, and a father who made her a stand-in for his alcohol-and-drug-ravaged wife. "I saw my first shrink at the age of six." Barbara herself became an alcoholic at thirteen, and lost her virginity to rape. Marriage to Arne came later, but wedded bliss was short-lived; they were devastated by the tragic death of their first child from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. They then adopted a son, Tucker. After giving birth to their daughter, Anne, Barbara began to transform herself into the "hostess with the mostess" whose passion was reserved for politics and booze.
With lusty humor, Barbara gives the lowdown on her own political career in the Minneapolis City Council, her sexual adventures in -- and out of -- wedlock, and her second marriage to businessman Pete Anderson. "Pete and I accept each other, rather than own each other....That's love. That's caring."

A Rich Broad's Self -Aggrandizement.......2004-01-24
In these days when shock value is considered tasteful content, or at least a sellable commodity, it is not surprising that this rich socialite would jump on the bandwagon. Other people have grown up in dysfunctional families, but I suppose since they do not originate from the rich and the privileged, they are just somehow not as interesting. However, it doesn't really interest me to view anothers airing out of dirty laundry.
Having met Mrs. Carlson once, when the company I work for was on strike, I remember her commenting to one of the strikers that "You should be happy to get $6.00 an hour." My response to this is that $6.00 an hour, at twenty-four hours per day, wouldn't cover her food bill. This is the typical social darwinistic view of such people that the rich deserve to be rich and the poor deserve to be poor. Awe-inspiring vulgarities may make good sales, but there is enough of that in the world without parading it as entertaining.
Barbara Carlson is one of a kind.......1998-06-26
I worked with Barbara Carlson for 5 years at KSTP. I am a part of this book. If you want to laugh. If you want to cry. If you want to learn. This is the book for you. This woman has achieved such incredible highs and low lows. Barbara is a study of addictions and the ability to talk about them is a frank way. Barbara is one person that you would want to meet after reading this book. The book is an accurate look at her life and deserved to be a best seller. Do yourself a favor, read this book. Barbara Carlson is one of the most dangerous people in America, she is willing to reveal all. I love her and you will too after you read it.
