Russell Banks (The Sweet Hereafter, Affliction) started out as a poet, and nowhere is this more evident than in his 37 years' worth of exquisite short stories, collected here in one hefty volume for the first time. In a mournfully lyrical phrase, he can evoke his characteristic landscape, the icy northeastern U.S.: "The air was crystalline, almost absent. The fields lay like aged plates of bone--dry, scoured by the cold until barren of possibility, incapable even of decomposition." Though his stories venture to Jamaica and Africa, Banks keeps coming back to New Hampshire and the themes of divorce, poverty, violence, and what he calls "the old father-and-son thing." He's not slumming in his trailer-park tales: his own drunken prole father beat him brutally, and Banks knows how grief and guilt shatter and unite families and small towns.

Characters often crop up in more than one story, giving the setting novelistic depth, drawing us into each life. In "Queen for a Day," we meet the young children of the Painter clan of New Hampshire as their dad is abandoning their mom, who then loses her job. "They run to her and wrap her in their arms... the three of them wind around each other like snakes moving in and out of one another's coils." In "Firewood," Painter's grown children rebuff his offer of fuel for their hearth, repaying his indifference, and Banks gives us a bad-guy's-eye view of their shared loneliness. In "The Fisherman," a $50,000 lottery is won by an old ice fisherman who stashes it in a cigar box, eliciting character-revealing reactions from the trailer-park denizens. "Dis Bwoy, Him Gwan" further reveals why the local pothead Bruce Severance so urgently needs the fisherman's money. The stories resonate and illuminate each other, the dialogue is pitch-perfect, and the collection has the cohesiveness of a 500-page novel. Banks's prose has the stark grace of classical tragedy. He's a poet after all. --Tim Appelo

4 out of 5 stars A great Banks introduction.......2006-01-01

I had not heard of Russell Banks until i heard the man himself read his story THE MOOR on NPR. That hooked me, there's something for everyone here.

5 out of 5 stars This book will grab you immediately........2003-03-16

I'm not much of a reader, but after someone read me one of the short stories in this book, I had to get it. It's great. The plots are fascinating, the characters believable, and many of the stories will make your jaw drop. Each story left me wanting to read the one after it! I couldn't put this book down until I finished it.

5 out of 5 stars Genius of short stories.......2002-05-13

This guy is great. His writing is so spare, so tender and so beautiful it's almost too good! This does mean the book lasts longer than most as you have to keep setting it down to gasp in wonderment, shake your head and think about what you've just read. I love Russell Banks!

5 out of 5 stars The heir to Raymond Carver.......2001-06-05

Russell Banks is known primarily as a novelist, but his collected short stories show him to be a master of the shorter form as well. Some of these stories--like "Success Story" and "Fisherman" are masterpieces--the latter having affinities with Mark Twain's "The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg" and Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." Banks is at his best when he writes about New England working class people who live in trailer parks, drink lots of booze, and whose lives are bounded and limited by solitude and lonliness. This collection follows in the realistic tradition of Ray Carver's "Where I'm Calling From." Both writers present us with a disctinctly male view of the world, and they have great feeling and empathy for their characters.

5 out of 5 stars A Memorable Collection.......2001-03-13

Russell Banks knows how to tell a story. He can vary his technique from intimate to grand scale and can interchange voices so you're never sure whether he is writing autobiography or pure fiction. In ANGEL ON THE ROOF he gives us stories that span a long period of his output and while each of the stories stands on its own (at times even in a short 5 or 6 pages)there is enough linkage or afterthoughts that somehow tie this collection together. Yes, the stories are intensely interesting individually and do continue to show Banks' feelings about the alienation and abuse of parent-child relationships, and people in general, and yes they can be read individually as a bedside book for finding somnolence. But to stop reading these collected stories as a book would rob the reader of the tangents that make for enhancing the experince as a novel. For sheer clarity of line, pungent descriptions of the quality of air/space/cold/skies etc Banks is as good as contemporary writers get. This is a richly rewarding book on so many levels that it clearly belongs in every library...with frequent easy access!

        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic .......2007-02-01

Okay so...I have no doubt in my mind that you will enjoy this book. It has it all; suspense, mystery, drama...the whole nine. I love the character Amelia Farrow, a beautiful, sucessful lawyer, who falls in love with her complete opposite. They might have challenges but this is a steaming love story and great mystery...I give it five stars. Tamara Sneed has done it again. Brillant!

4 out of 5 stars More Mystery than Romance.......2005-12-22

A well written book. However, I thought this was more mystery than romance. Don't get me wrong. I am not complaining. I thought that Ms. Sneed did a wonderful job putting Amelia and George together. Amelia needed a George in her life and despite their differences, Amelia and George have more in common than they thought. The phrase "Don't judge a book by its cover" comes to mind. I would recommend for a nice warm evening at home with a cup of hot cocoa.

4 out of 5 stars All Is Fair In Love and War.......2004-07-03

Adversarial rivals in the courtroom, they represent opposite ends of the legal spectrum - one is a defense attorney and the other is a prosecuting attorney. Each has a zest for fighting the good fight. Cunning and clever, they are well-respected in their profession. In anyone's book, one is well-to-do having grown up on the right side of the tracks, while the other was educated in the school of hard knocks as a child.

Despite their differences, attorneys Amelia Farrow and George Gibson find more commonalties as they set forth on the daunting task of discovering the truth of a conspiracy that threatens to shake the LA Courthouse to its very bedrock. As they further become embroiled in the scandalous course of events, George and Amelia are thrown together - instead of bitter adversaries, they have to join forces to overcome the dangers that loom over them. Will they be able to successfully unite to resolve the mystery at hand that threatens their very lives or will they be torn apart by the differences of days gone by? As the mystery unfolds, George and Amelia face tumultuous emotions and the perils of their investigation teeter on the very brink of life and death.

Ms. Sneed is to be commended on her efforts. The character development and the unraveling of the story left me wondering "what's next?" To me, this was a mystery story coupled with a romance rather than the other way around. I very much enjoyed reading YOU'VE GOT A HOLD ON ME and was surprised by the climatic ending.

2 out of 5 stars too slow to be a mystery..........2004-04-11

This novel starts off very slowly. For me a mystery novel needs to hook you within the first ten pages. "YGHOM" is too slow to be a mystery and does not have enough of that "UMPH" to make it a good love story. I received an email about the release of this novel and went right out to purchase it....I could have had a V8 or a Mochachino and been more fufilled.
I read the first fifty pages the day I got the book, and I was thinking OK, "when is it going to get good?"
The novel just moved too slowly for me to enjoy. Amelia and George work on opposite sides of the legal justice system yet find themselves trying to solve a crime while fighting the attraction they have for each other...typical LMN(Lifetime Movie Network) fare, but less entertaining!
Valerie Wilson-Wesley, Terris Grimes, or Barbara Neely, please send Ms. Sneed your old creative writing notes.

3 out of 5 stars Basically satisfying Read.......2004-02-05

I feel that this is basically a good read. However, it seems to me that it places more emphasis on the mystery side than the romance side. I feel that the author could have focused more on the budding romance between Amelia & George.

The mystery plot writing in itself is very exhilerating as well as suspenseful. This is a great whodunit for a cold rainy day. I feel that the author uses clear, vivid description and detail in this book. I felt as if I was breaking and entering right along with them in the courthouse. (talk about really getting into a book). This is though, in my opinion, more in the mystery genre than than of romance. Congrats Tamara, on a work well done. Keep on writing and I'll keep on reading!!!

Vaughan Roberts and his two companions had been trapped on a crime-ridden, chaotic planet until they bamboozled the population with a colossal, audacious hoax¿which brought them to the attention of the Interstellar Patrol, who were looking for a few good con men, capable of ingenious improvisation and adept at playing dirty tricks on the bad guys. The new recruits acquitted themselves admirably, so they naturally were given more tough nuts to crack, including:

Flummoxing an alien empire which has taken a number of human prisoners as reconnaissance for an invasion. This has a personal aspect, since the prisoners are from the planet which Roberts tricked into reforming. . . .Stopping a plan by not-so-good Samaritans who are pretending to cure a planetary plague¿which they introduced to the planet¿with a ¿miracle¿ drug which creates an addiction to the same drug, which the schemers will be glad to continue supplying for ever-increasing sums . . .Not only rescuing some Patrol personnel taken hostage by fanatics who plan to execute them one at a time until their leader is released, but convincing other fanatics throughout the galaxy that the consequences of threatening anyone in the Patrol are too terrible even to think about. . . .Making sure that the rightful heir to a planet¿s throne escapes from captivity and overthrows the usurper. This time there¿s a complication: Roberts may be falling for the ruler¿s beautiful sister. . . .And much more. . . .

5 out of 5 stars Mischief and Mishaps in the Space Lanes.......2007-08-03

Interstellar Patrol II: The Federation of Humanity (2005) is the second collection of Interstellar Patrol stories and related SF tales, following Interstellar Patrol itself. This volume includes twenty-two short stories and a short novel set in the Colonization universe.

In this collection, the first six stories are at least marginally related to the Interstellar Patrol, an organization known for its use of unconventional strategy and tactics. "The Claw and the Clock" (Analog, 1971) tells of the disastrous Crustax invasion of the pacifistic world of Storehouse. This story does not directly involve the IP except at the conclusion.

"Riddle Me This . . ." (Analog, 1972) concerns the rescue of two IP agents from a Crustax space fortress by Captain Roberts and his crew. "The Unknown" (Amazing, 1972) relates the tribulations of three con artists who attract the attention of the IP team and their ship. "The Throne and the Usurper" (F&SF, 1970) depicts the confrontation between Roberts and a man with an unusual talent. "The Trojan Hostage" (Analog, 1990) relates the trials of Roberts as a prisoner of clever anarchists.

Warlord's World (DAW, 1975) is a novel about the kidnapping of a royal princess of Festhold who has been admitted by Roberts into his IP crew as a probationary recruit. The villains are very cunning, but the IP is even more persistent in the defense of their new recruit. Since she is the sister of the true King, Roberts and the IP also intervene in an ongoing attempt to usurp the throne of Festhold.

The remaining stories concern other aspects of the Federation of Humanity. The next five tales are about Soldiers and Scholars. "Goliath and the Beanstalk" (Astounding, 1958) and "Facts To Fit the Theory" (Analog, 1966) relate the tales of Stath invasions of two separate pacifistic human planets. "Cantor's War" (If, 1974) pits an authoritative mathematician against the pragmatic military. "Uplift For the Savage" (Analog, 1968) tells of the practical education given to a learned woman by a fieldworker. "Odds" (Amazing, 1977) depicts the challenges of a man on an improbable planet.

The following five tales are about the Troubles With Cargoes. "The Troublemaker" (Astounding, 1960) concerns a cargo-control man who causes problems and a captain who knows the perfect solution to such antics. "Bill For Delivery" (Analog, 1964) shows why live cargo is often not a good idea. "Untropy" (Analog, 1966) illustrates the perils of drinking and driving. "The Low Road" (Amazing, 1970) shows why it is sometimes desirable to drink while driving. "Trial By Silk" (Amazing, 1970) depicts a situation that must be experienced before it can be believed.

The last seven tales in this collection are about the Troubles With Colonies. "The Operator" (Analog, 1971) puts the acting leader of a colony figuratively between a den of pack-bears and a shipload of neobarbarians, with some desirable females as the prize. "While the North Wind Blows" (Amazing, 1978) continues the previous story, only now the warm spell has led to an influx of giant flit birds and the awakening of the flame throwing slags. "Leverage" (Astounding, 1959) tells of a planet where the lifeforms cooperate much more vigorously than expected. "The Sieve" (Astounding, 1959) relates a tale of a new colony with too many uncooperative druggies. "Mating Problems" (Astounding, 1959) reveals one way of canceling out difficulties. "Hunger" (Analog, 1964) suggests that material goods and self-control is not enough. "Contrast" (Analog, 1964) explains a service provided to jaded citizens by one group of colonists.

Many of these stories have morals of sorts. For example, never attack a group of pacifists without checking out their history; some may be former galactic conquerors trying another approach. Another is to analyse the assumptions when evaluating a problem. In any case, the author doesn't just write a satisfying story, but also gives the reader something to thing about afterwards.

Unhappily, few people remember this author from his glory days. As one of those few, I still enjoy memories of his stories in Astounding and Analog and his few book collections and novels. My first introduction to Anvil was his story "The Gentle Earth" in a used edition of the November, 1957, Astounding, where naive aliens invade Earth and then discover weather.

Note that many of Anvil's stories first appeared in Astounding/Analog, starting with Pandora's Planet in the September, 1956, issue of Astounding. They continued to be published in the magazine for the rest of Campbell's tenure as editor. Apparently Ben Bova did not have the same appreciation for Anvil's style as Campbell, so Anvil went elsewhere. Yet Anvil returned for the last IP story, "The Trojan Hostage", which was published in the July, 1990, issue of Analog.

This is the last collection of IP tales, but not the last of Anvil's stories. The Trouble With Aliens gathers a plethora of short works about various and sundry problems with aliens of all sorts. They may be the best tales ever written by Anvil, but for certain they are even more typical of his style.

Highly recommended for Anvil fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of space adventure, risky situations and competent people.

        5 out of 5 stars A Good Followup.......2007-03-28

Interstellar Patrol II is an excellent followup to Interstellar Patrol. The choice and sequence of Christopher Anvil's stories to include in this followup volume was well thought out. Seeing Anvil's work again, some of it barely remembered, was a treat.Interstellar Patrol (The Interstellar Patrol series)

4 out of 5 stars Very good B-list space opera.......2005-09-13

"B-list space opera" might seem like faint praise, but Anvil is not E.E. "Doc" Smith or A.E. van Vogt in their prime, he is (to borrow Eric Flint's description of Laumer) a journeyman rather than a master.

There is quite a lot of enjoyment to be had in reading the Baen books collections of Interstellar Patrol I-II and Pandora's Legions, and I recommend all of them, but I can't give the fifth star I bestow on Smith's Lensman series, Brian Daley's Hobart and Alacrity trilogy, or Lee and Miller's Liaden novels.

Still, recommended to anyone who enjoys a good tale well told.

5 out of 5 stars The continuing adventures of Roberts, and other stories.......2005-06-02

Before giving the review of this book, I want to give full disclosure: I was part of a group that worked with Eric Flint to find many of these stories, to scan them in, and to proof them. Christopher Anvil (Harry Crosby) has always been one of my favorite authors. So I am slightly biased about this book. But in all honesty, this is a good collection of fun stories.

There are 23 stories in this book; the stories are in four groups. These stories were originally published from 1958 to 1978. All but "Warlord's World" were published in various Science Fiction magazines. "Warlord's World" was previously published as a complete book.

The first group of stories, which makes up about half the book, is about the Interstellar Patrol. These stories are a direct continuation to "Interstellar Patrol" which was published last year. Roberts and his friends have to solve a number of impossible problems, problems that would overwhelm mere mortals. In one story "Riddle Me This ..." they have to go into an alien fort to rescue two comrades who are being tortured to death. In another story "The Throne and the Usurper" Roberts goes solo against a man with a very amazing mutant ability.

The second group of stories has the least connected set of stories; this is kind of the grab bag set of stories. Two of the stories have to do with colonies of particular branches of humanity fighting off nasty alien invasions.

The third group of stories are about problems a couple crews have in shipping freight between the stars. The first story is about how to handle a new crew member who is a big trouble maker. There are two stories about how to handle difficult cargo. Another story is about potential death during shore leave.

The last group of stories focuses on the struggles of colonists on very hostile worlds. "Leverage" is one of my all time favorite Anvil stories. It is about how the colonists learn to use the deadly fauna to work for them, instead of killing them.

If you have ever enjoyed a Christopher Anvil story, buy this book. These are entertaining stories. The book is hard to put down. If you haven't read any of Christopher Anvil's stories, this is a good place to start.

          Book Description

In a time when the ordination of women is an ongoing and passionate debate, the study of women's ministry in the early church is a timely and significant one. There is much evidence from documents, doctrine, and artifacts that supports the acceptance of women as presbyters and deacons in the early church. While this evidence has been published previously, it has never before appeared in one complete English-language collection.

With this book, church historians Kevin Madigan and Carolyn Osiek present fully translated literary, epigraphical, and canonical references to women in early church offices. Through these documents, Madigan and Osiek seek to understand who these women were and how they related to and were received by, the church through the sixth century. They chart women's participation in church office and their eventual exclusion from its leadership roles. 4 out of 5 stars A Basic Book for Beginners.......2000-08-23

Lydia Darbyshire's book is a good supplement to other books on the subject, and it provides a detailed look at the types of articles a new collector of antique silver is likely to encounter. Descriptions, however, tend to be specific to the article shown rather than an overview of items of that type. The glossary has been particularly helpful in understanding the terminology found in this and other books on the subject. I did not find the introductory section as detailed or as fascinating as other books I have on this subject, but overall, I'd recommmend it to new collectors.

I found the book written in a way that brings you back to the time of Canadian colonization. I enjoyed the historical aspect and the story.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting and Educational.......2003-08-04

As a lover of historical fiction and a student of colonial North America, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Originally written in 1946, "Madeleine Takes Command" is a true story of the 17th century Canadian frontier. With her parents away, it is up to 14 year old Madeleine de Vercheres and her two younger brothers to lead the defense of a small outpost against a surprise Mohawk attack. Based on actual events, this book gives us comfortable moderns a harrowing glimpse into the rough and perilous past.

The characters are charming, sympathetic, and perfectly in keeping with those real people described in the Jesuit Relations and other primary sources of the time period. Though Madeleine is truly a courageous figure, at no time does she become "Xena, warrior princess," performing impossible feats of physical strength. Instead, she is able to preserve the family homestead with quick thinking, tireless energy, steady resolve, self-denial, an optimistic spirit, and devotion to family.

This Bethlehem reprint is attractively presented and includes a dozen or so illustrations. It's perfect for kids ages 10 and up, and also an enjoyable read for an adult. It makes great supplemental reading for the study of colonial North America and is highly recommended to homeschooling parents.

5 out of 5 stars Just a lovely book. Please read it!.......2001-06-28

I was very impressed with this book. The story is strong, exciting and not a bit sentimental or over done. Madeleine is a wonderful heroine.

MADELEINE VERCHERE'S story is based on a true account of colonial French Canada of the 1690's. 14-year-old Madeleine is left alone with two younger brothers at the Verchere family's fort and few others when the Iroquois Indians attack. We follow the brave and determined stratagems of Madeleine and her small circle.

The qualities of courage, self-sacrifice, familial love and devotion abound. (Doesn't the mere mention of those chararacter qualities make you feel desperate for our current generation??)

Usually at the end of a book I'll say "yea, that was a good book but I would change this or that to make it better" I honestly can't think of anything I would change in this master re-telling of Madeleine Verchere.

I wish Ethel C. Brill had written a dozen other books. She is a sharp writer and this is an excellent book.

                    Book Description

For European charm, stunning natural landscapes, and world-class cuisine, look no further than Quebec. Just across the border of the American northeast the province of Quebec, with culturally rich cities and pristine parks, is an accessible holiday destination abundant in natural beauty and cosmopolitan flair. The Quebecois invite us to enter their Victorian mansions, colonial French homes, brick houses with winding exterior staircases, log cabins, and contemporary lofts to share in culinary specialties such as maple syrup and tourtière, the traditional meat pie eaten on Christmas eve. Living in Quebec follows the changing seasons, from the flamboyant colors of an Indian summer to the underground life of Montreal in winter. Picturesque villages along the banks of the St. Lawrence, footpaths around clear blue lakes, and magnificent spring gardens all come to life in this richly illustrated volume.

Not quite up to Living in Paris..a bit disappointing. It was fine up until most of the design showcases of homes. It would have been more of a treasure had it been stronger on the Province of Quebec and more highlights on all the things in Montreal and Quebec City.

                                      Book Description

Intro is part of the new wave of innovative design and digital media companies. At a time when society is swamped by consumer messages, and when all the big design groups are delivering "sameness," the British-based firm Intro challenges the prevailing mindset by producing provocative work.

Display Copy Only contains the best of Intro's portfolio and reflects their diverse client list from Deutsche Bank to Depeche Mode. Perhaps best known for their music industry work with artwork for musicians including Primal Scream, Stereolab and Robbie Williams, their current projects stretch well beyond the confines of the music business. Other clients include a mixture of blue-chip companies, media-related businesses and arts organizations.
