Enjoyable.......2006-01-27
This book, while not FANTASTIC, was for lack of a better word, "enjoyable." I thought the characters were very true to life. However, I can see how others might not want to look so deep to appreciate this book.
yes- a good first novel, but not worth my time.......2005-11-19
Of the eight members of our book club, I am the only one who did not enjoy this book.
I found myself being as critical as Jasper, the main character, would have been about this puffed up piece of ____.
Docx did a nice job of weaving in Donne's work which made me want to revisit his poetry. As far as plot and characters, it played out like a made for TV movie. Docx's writing style reminded me of literature class - trying to hard. It went along, tat-tat-tat, then I think he grabbed a thesaurus and scoured it, then back to tat-tat-tat, thesaurus...
Mid-way through the book, Docx seemed to become a little more comfortable and his style was more enjoyable. Unfortunately, by that point I already was completely annoyed.
I expect Docx's sophomore effort will flow much better.
Most enjoyable book I have EVER read.......2005-07-28
I got on the wrong bus. And my journey home took and hour rather than 30 minutes. But when you have a book like this, who cares? People on the bus thought I was mad. I was laughing so hard tear came to my eyes......In parts, this is a very funny read yet there are very sobering moments as well where one holds sympathy for Jasper. The sophisticated use of the English language and a reminder of what Donne's poetry is all about add sufficient class to make this a very special experience. The book is also sprinkled with cullinary knowledge and travel experiences which would make this novel appeal to a very broad audience. In three words, brilliant, funny and intelligent! Why aren't there more books like this????
Thoroughly enjoyable!.......2005-07-03
Docx writes a real entertaining book here. Jasper is a memorable narrator who had me laughing out loud at times. He is aware of his own weaknesses, even as he enjoys sharing his techniques of capturing women and slowly falls in love for the first time. The scenes defining his calligraphy reveal a craftsmen who clearly enjoys his work.
The poetry is the center of the book and Docx resorts to an ending filled with twists to bring Donne out. More than the the surprises about Madeleine which Docx builds to, the suprises about Donne and Jasper's relationship with Donne were the more convincing.
I enjoyed the ending, but some readers may not dig it. Hope to read more about Docx and Jasper.
4 and a half stars.
Though lovers shall be lost, love shall not.......2005-01-10
This is a story of a modern libertine living in London, doing a very peculiar work for a living. This man is witty, charming, and women adore him, and he thinks of himself as the perfect Casanova. Until one day a moving van came unexpected...
So begins one of the wittiest, finely written, learned and disarmingly funniest stories of love in modern times, with characters you won't forget. A marvelous debut!
Book Description
1923. The young Rikkat is being brought up in the belief that her entire life will be devoted to the art of calligraphy. That same year, Atatürk’s republic breaks away from the Islamic tradition, progressively abolishing the Arabic language and scripts in favor of a modified version of the Latin alphabet. Once the sacred ministers of Allah, calligraphers are now being marginalized and their schools closed. The resulting suicide of Rikkat’s mentor can only reinforce her spite for the new regime and her love for the ancient art she has been taught since her childhood. Inspired by the life of the author’s grandmother,
The Calligraphers’ Night is a breathtaking excursion into the mysteries of life, death, and writing as an art. Yasmine Ghata is the daughter of the famed Lebanese poetess Vénus Khoury-Ghata.
The Calligraphers’ Night is her first novel.

Not two of the greatest..........2007-04-29
Im a big Diana Palmer fan and I had never read anything by Margaret Way. I know Diana Palmer is incredibly repetitive in her stories, but I found that neither of these two were anything more than ok.
Diana Palmers story is about a woman named Dana who of course in love with a much older man named Hank. She has just lost her father and in his will it says that Dana must marry Hank in order to keep her land. Hank is divorced and is still unsure of how he feels about his ex-wife.
Dana is an ok character. She doesnt have much direction though so shes not as strong as other characters Diana has invented. Hank is so undecisive, its as if he wants everything without giving anything of his own. Just OK characters, nothing more.
Margaret Way's story is about a young woman (Carrie) who is in love with her neighbor (Blake). She too, struggles with her alcoholic father and suffers even more when he dies. Blake has always acted as a protective figure for Carrie. Later, they begin to tell each other about their feelings.
Characters are also just ok. I dont like Carrie at all. Shes a very weak character in terms of stating her feelings towards Blake. She feels passion yet she doesnt know what to do with it. She avoids confrontations that she has been wishing for for a very long time. Blake is ok. But he too, doesnt say exactly what he feels. He expects her to know just by his brotherly actions.
Overall, this story drags a lot. And the ending is so abrupt it just makes it worse.
If youre a Palmer fan youll probably enjoy it only because its so short. I had never read Way's stories, and if the rest drag like this one with mediocre endings then i dont look forward to any others.

Book Description
On the night of November 15, 1966, two adventurous young couples drove into the TNT area north of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. What they saw in the countryside that night has evolved into one of the great mysteries of all time: just who or what was the Mothman?
This book will answer many questions regarding just what those couples saw outside the abandoned North Power Plant that night. Culled from a variety of sources, the materials presented inside are not conjecture--the authors are careful not to cross the line between fact and fiction--leaving any decisions regarding the truth behind the Mothman legend solely up to the reader.
The book features eyewitness reports, previously unpublished information, photographs, newspaper clippings, and more.

MOTHMAN: Just The Facts.............2004-05-10
Here we have two local authors that not only tell the entire story but present it in a totally unbiased manner. Who better to tell the story of Mothman than investigating locals? John Keels book was and is great in my opinion but so too is Mr. Wamsley's and Mr. Sergent's.
The authors didn't slap the "Mothman" title on this book and take off writing about other things as some have. They didn't throw this book together to ride the Mothman-movie-bandwagon, no, they give you exactly what you expect and more! The tale of Mothman in Point Pleasant, West Virginia starting in 1966. The straight forward, complete story with testimony, media and personally researched accounts! You get what you pay for and sometimes more, this is one of those "more" times. ENJOY!
I thought it would have more content...........2003-07-06
When I chose this particular book, I surpased the Mothman Prophecies by Keel, thinking this book would be better and with more info. All this is is articles from some people who saw it in 1966. Article after article, again stating the same comments over and over from the same people. I was very disappointed. Think next time I'll check out the book Mothman Prophecies book by Keel. There's GOT to be more info. out there....this book was a waste of money and I buy from Amazon bookstore quite often and for many years.

A "Must-have" for every paranormal library.......2003-01-28
Book reviews usually don't impress me. As an investigative researcher and author, I find most popular books dealing with the unexplained quite frustrating. Recently, a Christmas gift has inspired me to attempt my first book review.
Imagine, if you will, two authors preparing a manuscript defining the many nightmares that visited Point Pleasant, West Virginia between November 1966 and December 1967 that were previously chronicled in John Keel's "The Mothman Prophecies" and are the subject of a motion picture of the same name "co-starring" Richard Gere. Imagine again that these authors were both diligent and lucky enough to amass a mountain of raw data, including more than seventy-five unique news clippings from many local newspapers, correspondence between John Keel and percipients, and handwritten reports penned by the original witnesses just days after their encounter that have never been part of any public record.
What these authors accessed was a Mothman "time capsule."
Genesis accounts gleaned as the events happened.
"MOTHMAN: The Facts Behind The Legend" is a researcher's delight. Sergent and Wamsley bestow this treasure trove of factual information for all to examine. Pore at your leisure over nearly 100 scans of extremely rare, original press clippings about the Mothman and UFOs, private letters and reports that clarify the actual events that later created and encompassed the Mothman legend.
"MOTHMAN: The Facts Behind The Legend" is a "must-have" addition to every library.

This text is regarded as a Buddhist classic. Since all sentient beings have Buddha nature, there is no reason for conceit nor for self-contempt. These miisunderstandings are removable and do not touch the inherent purity and perfection of the mind, our buddha nature. This book presents in great detail and clarity the view which forms the basis of any Vajrayana or tantric practices.

Excellent Commentary on a thorny text.......2004-01-04
Having not read a novel for many years, this reminded me of the "can't put it down" books I used to read years ago.
I defy anyone to read this book and not feel that they wouldn't mind attaining perfect enlightenment. Be of the greatest possible benefit to all beings and do it without effort? - That has to be a state worth being in!! There is a catch though, there is no such state definable by our limited conventional logic.
I had many more questions at the end of this book than I came to it with, but that's one of the beauties of the Dharma - each question leads to the next and the next, until there are no more questions to ask, or indeed any desire to seek answers to anything.
Incredible value for such a profound and well produced book. A word of warning though - this book is in typical Tibetan teaching style, with a lot of repetition (I like to think of it as 'lots of useful revision'). Probably not an introductory text on the topic for someone new to Buddhist philosophy.
buddha nature.......2001-05-29
THIS BOOK IS AMAZE, SO SIMPLE AND AT SAME TIME SO PROFOUND??? IT SHOULD BE IN EVERY SERIOUS SEEKERS LIBRARY.
Enhanced with exceptional and informative commentary.......2001-01-12
Buddha Nature: The Mahayana Uttaratantra Shastra With Commentary is an impressively presented, highly recommended contribution to the rapidly growing library of Buddhist studies literature available to the western reader. Enhanced with exceptional and informative commentary by Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye, and with additional explanations by Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, Buddha Nature is one of the finest, most accessible presentations on the basis and process of enlightenment with the Buddhism. A seminal, benchmark publication, no dedicated student of Buddhist enlightenment can omit a careful and reflective reading of Buddha Nature.

Book Description
After many years of undeserved neglect, Biedermeier furniture, painting, textiles, and decorative arts are enjoying renewed popularity. The Biedermeier era (181548) was a period of tranquility following the devastation of the Napoleonic Wars and a fertile time for the design and production of household furniture and accessories. The furniture of the Biedermeier period is characterized by architectural simplicity and the use of light-colored fruitwoods offset by contrasting bands of ebony and maple inlay. It is this timeless sophistication that has once again brought Biedermeier to the attention of collectors and designers around the world.
Biedermeier, with its newly revised introduction, serves as an unrivaled sourcebook for the furniture and décor of this period. Angus Wilkie traces the era's complex history, giving a broad cultural and social background to the work itself. Providing an overview of the astonishing variety of furniture produced by local cabinetmakers from Germany to Scandinavia, this text showcases candlesticks, secretaries, and spittoons crafted in rich fruitwoods and decorated with inlays and sunburst veneers. With the aid of photographs of actual pieces and previously unpublished drawings, the regional designs are compared to one another, giving a rare view of the world of the nineteenth-century craftsman and of the design philosophy underlying the elegant aesthetics of the Biedermeier style. Wilkie's pioneering research is accompanied by over 160 specially commissioned color photographs, as well as watercolors of Biedermeier interiors, sketches, original textile designs, and original drawings of furniture and draperies reproduced from the Imperial Archives in Vienna. With its display of entire rooms as well as individual pieces, Biedermeier has garnered a wide audience among decorators, homeowners, collectors, dealers, and historians.

Book Description
Redefining Designing From Form to Experience C. Thomas Mitchell Redefining Designing: From Form to Experience offers a comprehensive new theory of design in which user needs and wishes are central. This landmark work focuses on design in terms of human experience rather than physical form. The book offers a highly critical study of design philosophies that have emerged since industrialization: modernism, late modernism, postmodernism, and deconstruction. C. Thomas Mitchell points out how many designs, particularly in architecture, fail to suit their intended purpose not because of their style but because of the design process itself. Mitchell then reviews user-responsive design methods, which he calls "design turned inside-out." He explores collaborative, contextual, and intangible design, and cites examples of each. International case studies illustrate up-to-the-minute topics such as "humanware," softecnica, the pattern language, and soft design. Also featured is an interview with Brian Eno and graphic work by artists Christo and Robert Wilson. Many never-before published illustrations enhance the book throughout. A broad synthesis of new thinking on design, Redefining Designing: From Form to Experience will be of great interest to a wide range of professionals, including architects, planners, and landscape architects, as well as product, interior, and industrial designers.

Is an architecture book for no architecture people.......1999-09-08
This book offers a critic evaluation of practices and philosophies about architecture. The author say that buildings doesn't get the planned objetives because of designing itself. The book presents a new way of doing architecture and presents an historical view of architecture like a social and cultural process.

Tom Hanks: A biography (People profiles)
ASIN: 0713480734 |
Customer Reviews:
A must for all Tom Hanks fans!.......1998-09-28
From author David Quinlan, the respected film reviewer for Britain's TV Times magazine, comes what is by far, the best--and most accurate--Tom Hanks biography to date.
The book is well written and easy to read. It is also nicely illustrated with a large selection of film stills and candid photos. There's plenty of information about Tom's personal life which is sure to satisfy even the most curious fan. The only negative in the whole book is that the author continually ridicules Tom's emotional Oscar acceptance speeches.
The book is divided into ten chapters, most of which are named after Tom's films. These include: "Making a Splash" (documents Tom's successful movie debut in Splash), "Nothing in Common" (Tom's failed marriage to Samantha), "Bosom Buddies" ((Tom meets--and marries--his beloved Rita), and "A League of His Own" (Tom's "Sleepless in Seattle" success and subsequent Oscar wins). There is also an index and detailed filmography which concludes with That Thing You Do! (The pending release of Saving Private Ryan is mentioned in the final chapter).

Gary Cooper off Camera is a tribute to a Hollywood star that manages to be sentimental, glossy, and passionate all at the same time. A fond introduction by Tom Hanks opens the book, but its multifaceted pleasures spring from the love of author Maria Cooper Janis, who clearly felt it was a unique and great privilege to be the daughter of Gary Cooper. Janis's writing--from the loving letter to her father's ghost to the text that accompanies the many photographs--is charged with filial warmth.
Though the book offers many glimpses of Cooper on the set, it also sheds light on sides of the actor that never appeared on screen: the family man, the sportsman, the host and guest who opened his affections to many Hollywood luminaries. It is these photographs that really make the book a delight. The camera has loved very few men as much as it did Cooper, and this collection captures the ease and joy of an American icon who in films often played awkward and alienated figures. Page after page of extraordinary black-and-white shots reveal the warm relationships Cooper had with his family, and with friends like Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, and Jimmy Stewart. This volume offers a tender view into a rare and fading kind of celebrity life, one that appears to have been somehow both glamorous and private. --Raphael Shargel
Customer Reviews:
GARY COOPER FANS...ATTENTION!!.......2005-09-24
This is a great book for initial insight into Gary Cooper by his daughter. It is very obvious she adored her father. The book is very informative about the personal life of "Coope" with many wonderful pictures, however, the book is more images than writing. The details are only touched on. If you are a Gary Cooper & you want many unseen pictures, this is the book for you...
Daddy's Girl .......2004-09-15
The cover photograph, of Gary Cooper spoon-feeding ice-cream to his daughter on the streets of "Hadleyville," is a poignant clue to what follows. Maria Cooper was a girl who lived a very rarified life, and she lets us take a delicious peek at it.
Beautiful Pictures Captures Public Image.......2004-04-03
Well, let me start with what beautiful tribute this book is to her father. Maria Cooper's book is beautiful, but too many of the pictures look posed (Hollywood style). And the pictures that are actually not posed say more in body language about a family that clearly protects the Cooper family image. These people are beautiful, but they are too perfect: clothes, hair, makeup, you know it's all there. One picture I found fascinating, is of the three of them on a beach facing the ocean. Maria and her mom on the left, and further away is Gary Cooper and his body language is quite clear. Hmmm, that definitely was a candid shot. And if anyone is really looking, the beautiful Maria seems to be the glue that kept that family together. There is a gorgeous shot of the three of them in their ski clothes in an old house. Rocky with little makeup is quite beautiful, but Maria and her Dad are the ones in sync in this picture. I don't know, but these pictures show a definite strain in the family relationship far more than I ever realized. With friends, the pictures are happier. I am a fan of Gary Cooper's and always will be. And the fact, that he adored his beloved daughter and she adored him is clearly seen in this book. Maria Cooper shows us a Gary Cooper I have already seen in other pictures other people have taken of him. There really isn't a lot of hugging, and touching, and birthday parties, water fights, and family occasions, events, like most people and other stars have of their lives while children are growing up. I would love to have seen a picture of Mr. Cooper in his overalls in his garden (he was an avid gardener), teaching Maria to do things, showing her how to ride a horse, acting goofy.. Maria Cooper is quite lovely, and this book is wonderful to look at, but I don't really feel anything but a little sadness that she didn't show us more candid and "real" photographs about of her Dad and the family. There was a great deal more to this man than meets the eye. I didn't get too much of a glimpse into that.
Gary Cooper Off Camera.......2001-07-14
In a day and age when the children of "the stars" write the most deplorable books about their parents, this book is a wonderfully tender tribute to a true hero. Absolutely refreshing.
An Appealing Memoir.......1999-11-06
Smack in the middle of these cynical, jaded times comes this warm and appealing memoir by Maria Cooer Janis of her father, acting legend Gary Cooper. How wonderful! Maria Cooper Janis's open love for her father is there for all to see on every page. This alone makes the book worth owning. We've come to expect the negative, the cynical, in books of this type. But Ms. Janis has put together an extened love letter to her father and mother. And good for her!
Book Description
An intimate portrait of America's favorite actor and star of the Hollywood blockbuster, The Da Vinci Code.
Two-time Oscar winner and three-time Oscar nominee, Tom Hanks is unquestionably one of the finest actors of his generation. Starring in such memorable films as Big, Splash, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Philadelphia, and Saving Private Ryan, Hanks has won both critical respect and the hearts of fans the world over. Yet despite his extraordinary success, this very private actor remains an enigmatic figure. Now, journalist David Gardner looks at Tom Hanks' lifehis difficult childhood; the breakdown of his first marriage; his family life and friendships; and his decision not to take on violent roles. Drawing on interviews with close friends and family members, this is an illuminating account of a much-loved but little-known Hollywood star.
Customer Reviews:
All you may need to learn something about Tom........2007-01-26
This is an updated "David Gardner Book" (see others on the amazon-list) about actor Tom Hanks which provides you with most important things to learn something about Tom Hanks' life. Easy-to-read style, in-depth research and even latest entries are accurate. The only "minor" thing which may disappoint some readers and fans is the fact of getting only a small number of black and white pictures in the book (therefore only 4 stars).
Nevertheless, strongly recommended.
Behind the screen.......2006-09-30
Tom Hanks is well known, famous even, for the wide variety of film roles he has played from Forrest Gump, to astronauts, to Army Captain Miller in Saving Private Ryan. Yet in spite of the large number of movies he has made, he remains a quiet and generally unknown person. He has managed to escape the wild publicity swings, multiple divorces, and generally outrageous behavior often found in Hollywood characters.
This book, by British author David Bardner tells the story of Tom Hank's life, the history of his films and of his family. It is written neither to glorify nor condemn, but seems to strike a fair balance of objective reporting.
It brings out how hard Tom Hanks had to work to hone his craft. His casual screen style is no accident but the result of a lot of hard work, and a wise selection of roles and directors. All in all, you are convinced that Tom Hanks is a really nice guy.

So close and yet so far.......2002-04-21
I am a die-hard Tom Hanks fan so any book about him and his awesome career belongs in my library. This is a good one, but there are some serious downfalls in it. I am not sure if the authors are just overly impossibly critical or what, but they refuses to see the good side of his work in the early days. I was depressing. If you know anything about actors you know that they are not all overnight success. Why can't they deal with that? I was able to forgive them this type of criticism until I read about Sleepless in Seattle. Where was the editor the day these pages came in? Sam Baldwin's sons name is Jonah, not Joshua!

Customer Reviews:
entertaining but not too deep.......1998-10-08
Tom emerges as, of course, a decent man and a talented actor. The author doesn't delve too much into Hank's psychology but it is still very entertaining.
