Book Description
he Woodrow family is at the circus to celebrate Greta's seventh birthday. When a clown asks for a volunteer from the audience, the parents are shocked when James, their extremely shy five-year-old, raises his hand. James thrives in the spotlight, and as the clown leads him through the routine, the parents glow with pride as the audience cheers for their son. The cheers turn into thundering applause as the act culminates in spectacular fashion, with James vanishing before their very eyes. The trouble is that James really does vanish-poof-into thin air. As the police and media descend on the Woodrows, they feel that the laws of the universe have shattered. How can you solve a puzzle with no logic? As young Greta sets out to discover what really happened to her brother, each family member grapples with the joys and perils of loving, the persistence of loss, and the magic of everyday life.

Very moving.......2006-05-02
This book made me do something I've never done before... I actually teared up while reading it, on the bus, on the way to work one morning. Anne Ursu draws really vivid characters in Hannah, Greta, Justin, Tom the cop, and Mike the Clown. And dear sweet James. The story of one family's crisis, told from each of their points of view, is quite nearly heartbreaking. Hence those tears on the bus!
I have no idea how I found this book in the first place. In fact, I think it may have been an Amazon recommendation based on my previous purchases. However I found it, I'm really glad I read it, and now I'm halfway through Ms. Ursu's second novel and am thoroughly enjoying it. She's a find!
"A tantalinzingly good novel".......2004-05-06
I started the book with the thought that it was going to be completely boring, and the first few pages were a bit tiring, but hey, it's not a kids book. But soon enough the book got interesting and then I found myself reading 100 pages in one night. I just couldn't help it. It was amazing. The bitterness and detail and the actual feelings of the storyline touched my heart, and when I finished the book, I found myself quite sad to be finished with it. But I haven't read Spilling Clarence yet, so I'm definetly going to go for it.
Read Like a Boring Dream.......2004-03-28
Although the hype on this book was very good, the only thing I can agree with is the statement, "Dreamlike", and a tedious, boring dream at that. It was so surreal and uneventful that I skimmed the last half, just to finish. Boring character development told in the third person.
Terrific, and would make a GREAT MOVIE!.......2003-12-17
One can only wish the young author the best success in all her future books! "Disapparition" is simply among the best written, most mesmorizing family loss books ever written. A real page turner, as well as a great look at a successful family which finds its young son suddenly vanished in a magic show. All the protagonists, including the magical clown, the neighbors, the police, and the media are drawn perfectly. And though the end may seem vague (supernatural?) even that is perfect too! Dont miss this one!
Magical!.......2003-10-22
Takes an unlikely--indeed unbelievable--premise and makes out of it a thoroughly charming and wonderful story. Surprising, compassionate and gripping. I nearly had to put it down because I couldn't stand to find out what happened to James. But then, of course, I couldn't put it down!

Classic Salvatore.......2007-09-16
What more to say than, GET THIS BOOK, IT'S ONE OF THE BEST SALVATORE BOOKS OUT THERE!! LOVE IT, LOVE IT, AND LOVE IT!!
The Underdark awaits!.......2007-08-31
Exile is book 2 in The Dark Elf Trilogy.
Exile tells the story of Drizzt outside of the Drow Cities in the open wilderness of the Underdark. For the ten years following his abandoning his house, he is left with no one but his faithful Guenhwyvar, a magical Panther he had acquired in Homeland. He is also met with great dangers that he meets with the business ends of his scimitars. Struggling with conflicting emotions, which involve his failure in Menzoberranzan and a deep grief for his father and friend Zaknafein, he makes his way to the surface to face newer dangers.
As always, Salvatore writes an amazing adventure.
great series.......2007-02-23
just a thorughly enjoyable book, series, main charatcer. drizzt is very likeable and learning about the world he lives is very interesting and intriguing.
Another Great Book!.......2006-12-03
Exile, the second book in the Dark Elf Trilogy and a great follow-up novel to Homeland. Drizzt's epic tale only becomes better as it goes on. After reading Homeland, I was very eager to get my hands on Exile. So, the next day I went to my local library and checked out a copy. This book introduces us to new places in the Underdark other than Menzoberranzan. I finished the book and could not wait to read the last book in the trilogy. This book was just as good as Homeland and provided more insight into the Drow way of life.
Great follow up to Homeland, and another underdark masterpiece.......2006-09-02
This book follows well the footsteps of Homeland. It continues the story of our favorite dark elf and goes further than Homeland in the sense that it breaks out into the vast underdark beyond Menzoberranzan. While I thouroughly enjoyed this book, I did somewhat miss the house politics and negative energy that filled the pages of Homeland. Trust me though, this book does not dissapoint. There is still plenty of Drow deceit to be wrought here, and its told in amazing fashion by one of fantasies best authors.
The characters are well developed and very interesting. One of the most interesting characters in the book may be Clacker, a Pech turned Hook Horror that becomes an intricate part of the story later on in the tale. Zin-Carla is also an amazing "character" if you will, as it takes on a form that we all know well from the previous book. Overall Exile was a fun read that showed me a side of Drizzt Homeland did not. A Drow succumbing to his dark side, the hunter, in an effort to survive the wraths of the underdark without his kin. Recommended! A must read in the bridge from Homeland to Sojourn.

Customer Reviews:
Comic does the the book justice.......2007-07-03
Normally I find comics to be short, lacking in emotional detail, and mostly just action sceen after action sceen. This interpretation however is very well done, doing a very fine job at portraying the main characters mental sturggles while also delivering extremely rich detail in the fight scenes. Some trivial parts from the novel is left out but not enough for story to lose much of its impact.
If you have already read the books and are looking to add more Drizzt products to your collection then this a must, otherwise its a good comic novel to pick up if your less inclined to reading full novels.
Excellent, faithful to the original........2007-06-21
This second volume in the graphic novel adaptations of the Legend of Drizzt series is every bit as excellent as the first. Spectacular, dramatic art brings this favorite story to life as never before (it should not, however, be viewed as a substitution for the original novel). In Exile, the story of Drizzt takes up with him having lived ten years in the Underdark, where he survived by becoming an instinctual hunter. He travels to a city of deep gnomes where he befriends Belwar Dissengulp and regains his sense of humanity. Drizzt's mother, Matron Malice seeks to find and kill Drizzt in the hopes to regaining the favor of Lloth. To do this she enacts a reanimation spell on the body of Zaknafein, Drizzt's father, so that it may seek out and destroy Drizzt. Drizzt and Guenhyevar (forgive spelling) encounter many perils and mysteries in their travels through the Underdark, and this story (more than any other) allows the reader to really get to know Drizzt's character.
This graphic novel faithfully retains the essence of the original novel, and actually adds to the story with the vivid and spectacular art. The only real complaint I had with this volume was the truncated-feel of the scene where house Do'Urden falls. This scene is of central importance to the future of Drizzt's tale and more effort should have been made on its telling.
Much like the first book, this one is excellent and should be a must-have for any fan of Salvatore's Drizzt novels.
The Legend of Drizzt, volune 2.......2007-05-25
I really liked the story line. But it should be explained that it is written in comic book form. Not exactly adult reading material.
Awesome.......2007-03-09
this book ( or graphic novel--i should say) rocks!! the plot is very well portrayed through Tim Seeley's artwork. Anyone a fan of Drizzt and Salvatore should definetly get this!
This is a comic book........2007-01-18
If you are looking for the novel, this isn't it. The description does not indicate that this is nothing more than a fancy comic book. I bought vol 1-3, returned all with a complaint, Amazon reordered for me and sent me the same thing again. Finally got the novels from B&N for less. Don't waste your money.
Book Description
Spider Robinson's Off the Wall at Callahan's is a collection of epigrams, maxims, proverbs, observations, eye-watering puns, and original song lyrics distilled from the first five volumes of the Callahan's Place series. All of these gems were painstakingly deciphered from blown-up old photos of the wall behind the bar, where Callahan let his customers scrawl graffiti, so, technically, every word is 'off the wall.' There are even capsule bios at the end for every person (real or imaginary) quoted in the graffiti section. Out of print for five years, new fans of Callahan's will be looking for this book.
Customer Reviews:
Warning: This is NOT "The Notebooks of Lazarus Long"........2000-04-15
I was extremely disappointed with this book. I have been a Spider Robinson and Callahan fan since the first book. Unfortunately, this book did not live up to my expectations. If you have read the "Callahan's" books, you have seen the good parts of the book (if you haven't, you need to get them right away! They are wonderful!). Most of the book is made up of sayings that are supposed to have been written on the wall of Callahan's Place. If this is all that was written, the wall should have been painted over a long time ago. Save your money, and buy the next Spider Robinson book that should be coming out soon.
The collected sayings, puns and songs of Callahan's Place.......1997-02-21
Off the wall at Callahan's is a collection of all the best sayings that Mike Callahan collected over the years, some of the worst puns, and the nicest songs. There is also a short foreword by Spider explaining how this book came to be, and an section at the end listing the person who appeared over the various books in the Callahan's Saloon series. The book also features several cute interior illustrations by Phil Foglio, and is printed on acid-free paper (according to the jacket). While this book is NOT a collection of stories as are all the other books in this series, it DOES give valuable background and interesting tidbits. It's probably not a good book to get if you've not read any of the rest of the series, but if you have and liked them, it'll probably appeal to your taste. I liked this book very much myself, but could see where it might not appeal to non Robinson fans

Scattershot.......2007-05-08
For an entertaining evening out, toss this little book into a crowded restaurant. The diners will immediately pick sides, upend tables into barricades, and proceed to cannonade each other with champagne corks and veal flambé. Seriously--it's that kind of book.
William Henry Burr's original 1860 barrage against the Bible did not enjoy a tremendous shelf life compared to most classics. On the other hand, it managed to survive thirty years in a solution of concentrated American Christianity before going out of print, and this in itself is no small feat. In 1987, one hundred and twenty-seven years after its original publication, Prometheus Books resurrected...er, excuse me, reprinted this compact compilation of biblical self-contradictions.
One interesting feature of "Self-Contradictions" is the introduction by R. Joseph Hoffmann of Hartwick College. His utter loathing of Christianity is evident from the first sentence: "Sometimes old diseases demand old cures." Writing with an abhorring eye on the American evangelical resurgence of the 1970s, Hoffmann makes no effort to conceal his revulsion at Christian fundamentalism and the ignorance he sees animating it. So profoundly does Hoffmann detest Christianity that occasionally he undermines his own credibility. For example, many Christian university students would be amused to discover that according to Hoffmann, they are unaware the New Testament was written in Greek. However, Hoffmann clearly isn't writing for Christians anyway, and his intended audience isn't likely to quibble over a little broad-brushing.
Perhaps the most interesting feature of this book is Burr's unique place in his historical context. Laundry lists of scriptural self-contradictions are well familiar to anyone with an interest in religion and an Internet connection. However, Burr beat the Internet atheists to the punch by over a century and hacked out a trail for countless thousands after him. Burr's book, then, is significant in this respect: it's not the only or the best attempt to compile internal biblical errors, but it is the first published attempt at listing Christians to death.
As for the validity of the contents, the reader must judge. Burr makes no arguments, gives no reasons, grants no interaction. "Self-Contradictions of the Bible" is a straightforward coupling of verses which Burr believes directly contradict one another. Some of the alleged contradictions are so weak that even Hoffmann recognizes their speciousness, but this should not prevent the Christian from thinking through the more difficult paradoxes. Christian answers to certain problems collapse under their own weight, but that should not prevent the atheist or the agnostic from thinking through the more thoughtful explanations.
However, realistically, any book of this nature is more likely to divide than it is to promote healthy dialogue. The atheist is more likely to acclaim Burr as an enlightened sage, while the Christian is more likely to dismiss him as an incoherent reprobate. Neither will devote much thought to the other's arguments, and very little progress will be made in either direction. Gentlemen, champagne corks at six paces, if you please...
GENEALOGIES OF JESUS DO CONTRADICT.......2006-05-22
If religious folk would actually read the entire Bible, 99% of them would be agnostic long before the last page.
The review below by Sargus Lockhart is the perfect example. Lockhart clearly has not read the Bible's genealogies; both are explicitly Joseph's family tree. (See, e.g., Luke 3:23 ff.: "Jesus . . . the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli," etc.) It is also laughable to suggest that any organization as sexist as a religion would bother to include a maternal genealogy. Of course, using Joseph's genealogy is another logic buster, since the authors of the gospels purport to believe that Jesus' true father was Yahweh.
Self-Contradictions of the Bible.......2003-10-30
I consider William Henry Burr's Self-Contradictions of the BibleEa smashing success. Burr truly brings out simple fact that the belief that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, and literally true word of God - thrives on ignorance, not just of a general sort, but an ignorance of the Bible itself. Because of critical thinkers like William Burr, the Apologetics are nowadays working evermore harder to explain awayEall the inconsistencies in the bible. For instance, God is kind, merciful, and good. Ps.100:5 "For the Lord is good, his mercy is everlasting." Yet God is cruel, unmerciful, and evil. Num.25:4 "And the Lord said to Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord may be turned away from Israel."
Let try another. Should we rejoice when our enemies suffer? Pr.24:17 says no Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth.EContrast with a resounding yes; Ps.58:10 The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wickedE I think I have made my point. For more insight into the many oddities of the bible one should pick up Dan Barker's Losing Faith In Faith: From Preacher To Atheist. As Mr. Burr clearly shows the holy book of multiple choice is truly a curious thing.
Still Controversial 150 Years Later.......2003-04-22
An amazing little book, still raising eyebrows and upsetting fundamentalists 150 years after its publication. While the author is not a scholar and never claims to be, he offers a number of cases where the bible might contradict itself. No attempt is made to put things in context, or to put a spin on them. Just verse for verse contradictions. The Preface is an eye opener, and I have to say this little volume has aged very well. Thought provoking for those who can't be spoon fed their faith.
Would be great if it were true..........2003-04-05
Mr. Burr brings up some great points. Unfortunatly, many of the "contradictions" he lists are not contradictions at all. For example, one "contradiction" Burr lists in his book involves the genealogies of Christ. In the New Testament, there are two genealogies of Christ. One is in the book of Matthew, chapter 1, and another in the book of Luke, chapter 3. If you look at them, they look completely different. They don't even agree on Jesus' grandfather. The fact is, however, that these lists are not contradictory, but instead complementary. The genealogy in Matthew is Joseph's family line, while the one in Luke is Mary's.
There are many cases like these. The he doesn't back up his claims...

This book can help readers of many ages........1999-03-13
This is a no-nonsense, hands-on cooking guide that assumes no prior knowledge of the kitchen. I wish I had had it when my father was suddenly on his own after my mother's death. It would also be ideal for college students--a big step up from grilled-cheese sandwiches made on the ironing board! And it's a great way to introduce children to cooking while respecting their desire to do it themselves.

Book Description
The Accelerated series was developed to fill a void in the market. Many books are either too broad in scope and try to cover too much ground, or they are so narrow in scope they focus only on a particular area of the software's functionality. Neither is a good solution for the beginner market. The objective of the Accelerated series is to reduce the time it takes for a beginner to learn, internalize, and apply book knowledge to practical projects.
Every chapter is divided into three sections: concepts, foundation exercises, and professional tutorials. Concepts covers basic, need-to-know principles and theories. Step-by-step foundation exercises reinforce the concepts. More advanced tutorials then expand the learning.
In the exercise and tutorial sections, there are sidebars containing notes and tips. Notes explain concepts in more detail than in the first section while tips dish out useful shortcuts and time-saving tricks. In addition, before and after screenshots are consistently provided right at the beginning of every hands-on exercise to give readers a clear idea of what can be achieved.

Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2006-05-18
I own many books on color and this one is honestly not one of my favorites. It's not that there's anything that I disliked in particular, but there are other books out there that do a much better job addressing this topic.
Well-done and practical guide.......2002-12-30
This book contains many useful tips throughout the book and has beautiful photos. The pictures are mostly examples of Loft-style interior decoration, but if you don't like Loft style, the tips contained within the book are still worth the cost of the book.
The first section is titled "Using Color." Geddes-Brown does a great job of covering the basics of color, such as color properties, the color wheel, and how to find and use your colors. She also covers areas that many other color books do not, such as color and light, zoning and defining space, and how textiles influence color perception.
The second and third sections are titled " Neutrals and Naturals" and "the Colors." These two sections show examples of each neutral or color and has information on how to decorate with each color.
The last section titled "Useful Information" has pages for your own notes and sketches, a list of resources, and a place to put your own favorite resources.
Bonus: I like the fact that at the beginning of each section there are pockets for swatches and magazine inspirations. At the end of each section she has a page titled "Finding Inspiration" which has more useful tips.
I recommend this book for anyone, from someone just beginning to explore interior decoration to interior design junkies like myself.

For professionals working in the field of journalism.
Customer Reviews:
Dated and strictly for amateurs.......2005-06-13
The moment you open this book you realize that the publisher hasn't got a clue about publishing. It seems as if the book was made on an early version of PageMaker, printed out on a LaserWriter and sent along to a local photocopy shop. Every single letter of type in the book is rasterized, which makes it harder to read and tells you that these guys are not ones to lecture others on the finer points of making things clear on a printed page.
The graphics themselves are mostly of the Excel v. 3 variety, except those reproducted from other publications. Many of those seem to be 2ndd or 3rd generation photocopies, scanned in at low resolution and are not very helpful at all.
The text is OK, but more than a little dated. My guess it was prepared as course material for some journalism faculty, Infographics 101. It does give some good guidance and warns of some common pitfalls, but as a guide to a working journalist it isn't very helpful. Aesthetically it is horrible.
Don't waste money or time on this one.
Not only for journalists!.......2001-08-30
Although written for journalists, this book is also a valuable resource for consultants, technical writers and business professionals who use graphics to augment reports, findings and recommendations, and manuals.
The section titled "Principles of Graphic Presentation" provides valuable insights into how to effectively and aesthetically present information that is an accurate portrayal of the facts, concepts and processes about which you are writing.
I personally focused on chapters 3 (Chart-Based Graphics), 5 (Charts Without Numbers) and 7 (Illustration-based Graphics) because of their direct applicability to my profession - IT consultant. In particular, the chapter on chart-based graphics was extremely useful because the wrong chart type actually hampers communication of statistical and numerical information. I appreciated the straightforward advice on selecting the best chart type for the underlying data and how to present it in the most effective manner. I also liked chapter 8, Errors and Inaccuracy, which contained useful pointers on how to avoid common problems with charts and graphic portrayal of information. This book is an excellent addition to any writer's library, and especially so for those of us who need to ensure accuracy and presenting the clearest message to readers. I highly recommend this book and rate it at 5 stars.

Book Description
Frequently called the most western of writers, Stegner talks in these lively interviews about his early training and apprenticeship, about the contemporary situation of western writers, the environment, history and fiction, teaching creative writing, and those writers who have influenced and informed his work.
The interviews reflect Hepworth's familiarity with Stegner's life, work, and ideas and, as a result, reveal more than earlier published interviews about Stegner's thoughts on the craft of writing, the nature of literature, and his own experiences as a writer. He addresses important questions on his Pulitzer Prize-winning Angle of Repose and the most autobiographical of his novels, Crossing to Safety.
These conversations from a long and productive career will appeal to fans of Stegner's work and scholars alike.
