Book Description
In the last volume of the trilogy, the youngest son of Sequenenra Tao assumes command of the natives armies to avenge the deaths of his father and bother and bring about the downfall of the foreign rulers, the Hyksos, whose alien dynasty has ruled Egypt for two hundred years.
Customer Reviews:
Lords of two Lands, final book, great true history re-created.......2007-03-24
In this final book of the trilogy, the final male Tao, last of the royal line which had survived 200 years of Hyksos rule over Egypt, finally ends the war, and also makes sure the Egyptian nobles accept him as Pharaoh. The women of his family, grandmother, mother and his sister-wife (historically accurate)are strong characters. It is believed the grandmother Queen Tetisheri helped with war strategy. Importantly, after their victory, the local god of Thebes, their town god, and the god of their family became the state god of Egypt and eventually the most powerful of all the Egyptian gods, due to the resurgance of this family. The rise of this family and its' destruction of the Hyksos conquerors began the era called the New Kingdom and began the 18th Dynasty of Egypt. A good read, well researched, yet the characters live on the page as people one can believe in and care about.
The Horus Road: Lord of the Two Lands.......2005-09-27
Very impressed with Pauline Gedge's vision of this troubled period in Egypt's history. Both characterization and scene setting are sensitive and, I believe, very authentic. The 3rd book fulfils the expectation created in the previous volumes, in a very memorable way, of a land at last freed from a foreign tyranny.
A Shame it's the Final Book of the Trilogy.......2004-11-20
This is the final volume of the Lord of the Two Lands trilogy, Ahmose Tao has vowed to continue the fight that has already killed his father and brother.
He is determined to take the fight to Apepa and breach of the walls of his capital Het-Uart. While he is away with the army his wife Nefertari is creating a new royal city from which Egypt will eventually be ruled.
When at last Het-Uart is captured Ahmose his horrifed to find that Apepa has escaped and still thwarts Ahmose's plans for Egypt and Ahmose must come to a decision . . .
Pauline Gedge is an accomplished writer who knows her subject thoroughly.
Kept me interested enough to follow.......2004-07-14
I'm going through an ancient-Egypt phase, so that's probably why this trilogy kept me interested. I can't say it was an engaging series. Surprisingly, The Horus Road is the best out of all 3. The author was irritatingly racist (she made some characters racist, which I had no problem with. It was her portrayal of the Medjay that exposed her), and a bit sloppy and thus confusing. For example, she would refer to a character as Black, dark-complexioned, or brown, then later say he/she paled. lol The ending was OK. But, the epilogue's ending was ridiculously corny. Each book was too long, too drawn out. I usually love details and elaborate descriptions, but in this series it was just too repetitive and appeared to be "filler" for lack of something (I don't know what. That's just how it felt).
The books were also too predictable. She often tells what's going to happen instead of building the story to surprise us or at least provide a better sense of eventfulness.
I liked the language. However, it was barely character-distinctive, if at all. There're unanswered questions. What was Tani's fate? She could've said it in the epilogue (although granted, I pretty much skimmed over it so maybe I missed something).
Considering the mundanity of this book, I was surprised when it was moving. A few times I was moved to laughter or sorrow, etc. I suspect that high sales were due to the theme or setting (ancient Egypt, which isn't common for a novel), as opposed to the writer's skill or talent.
What a fabulous epic series!!.......2002-10-20
Pauline Gedge is an excellent and imaginative writer and a great storyteller. I read the trilogy in a week, and this book in two sittings. I was captivated by the fast-moving story. What a fabulous reading experience.
I am usually totally lost when any author tries to describe multi-focal battle scenes, but I found her descriptions easy to envision. I thank Ms. Gedge for including a map, creating a cast of memorable characters, and illustrating many aspects of everyday life in "royal" Egypt. Her descriptive talents allow one to visualize meals, dress, the struggles of daily life, human frailties, and even complex religious customs and rituals.
It's ending was a little anticlimactic...perhaps a sequel? Ahmose's second son, Amunhotep, becomes the next pharaoh. It made me wonder what happened to his first stepson, or even if he was an historical figure.
I'm definitely adding Ahmose to my Historical Hunks and Heroes list. I am pleased to add this trilogy to my library.

"If it's the last thing I do, Emily Blair is going to pay for my brother's death!"
Hell-bent on revenge, darkly devastating Josh Atkins had come to Prosperino wanting only one thing from Emily Blair. Penance. If his little brother hadn't been so intent on protecting the youngest Colton heiress from the machinations of her deranged "aunt" he might still be alive. But when Josh's angry words and false assumptions caused a guilt-ridden Emily to flee from the family she'd just been reunited with, the rodeo cowboy knew he must make amends. Then he wound up stranded with her on a rocky hillside. And it was then that Josh discovered there's a very fine line between disdain . . . and desire!

Josh and Emily-SPOILERS.......2004-09-21
Favorite scene with Emily-
Her talk with Martha after Josh left.
Favorite scene with Josh-
Finally accepting that Toby was gone, but not forgotten.
Together-
The date, which didn't go well at all.
What did you like about Emily-
Her love, in friendship, for Toby, and guilt for what had happened.
What didn't you like about Emily-
After what had happened to her, she went off to be alone, unconcerned for anyone or anything around her. Took family for granted.
What did you like about Josh-
His love for his brother.
What didn't you like about Josh-
He blamed Emily for Toby's death, although I couldn't blame him for being upset, and taking it out on her. Still, he didn't know all the facts, and was ready to make a judgment without knowing her.
If I had to cast Emily, I'd cast Renee Zellweger.

Emily Blair Colton is a character that has been with us since the very first book in the Colton series. In the fist book (Beloved Wolf) someone tried to kill Emily in her own home. Emily ran away and ended up in Wyoming. In the following books in the series we learn that Emily suspects her 'mother' of trying to kill her. She reaches out to her adoptive and foster siblings asking for their help in getting to the truth. We learn that her 'mother' is really an imposter and indeed wants Emily dead. In Wyoming Emily makes a new life for herself while her family tries to sort out the problems at home. Emily makes new friends, including the town sheriff Toby Atkins. In the previous book (Pregnant in Prosperino) Emily is attacked for the third time and Toby is killed trying to protect her. That brings us to this book (The Hopechest Bride) where Emily is now home and safe with her family in Prosperino, California.
Josh Atkins is hell-bent on revenge against the woman he feels is responsible for his brother's death. Josh, who leaves the rodeo circuit and heads to Prosperino to confront Emily, never expected to feel guilty for his verbal attacks on her. He also never expected to find himself attracted to her. Josh is fifteen years older than Emily and knows he should resist her. Not only that, but his brother Toby was in love with her. Josh and Emily both have a lot of healing to do if they want to have a future together. They must also learn to let the past go and make their peace with Toby.
This book brings back many characters from the previous books in the Colton series. I enjoyed seeing everyone happy for a change, and even Meredith's therapist gets a happy ending. If you have read the other books in the series than you will love this one. I encourage you to buy the other books and read them first, but if not that is okay because this book can stand on its own.

A brilliant exposition by a great thinker........2004-02-14
In Bergson's "Two Sources," the famous french thinker applies his relational methodology and metaphysic to an analysis of religion and morality. Bergson himself was certainly very careful about how he presented his own religious sentiments, and this book continues to show that care, coupled now with his meticulous attention to phenomenological detail. Hence, this is not a proselytizing sermon, but a close analysis of phenomenological *sources* of religious and moral sentiment.
This is a later work of Bergson's, and as such, it might not be the best introduction to his work. One can see a great deal of Bergson's previous metaphysical thought operating in the background if one knows what to look for. To catch up on that background, one might want to read _Time and Freewill_ or _Matter and Memory_, for instance.
However, its also not clear that one really needs that background to appreciate this book. For one thing, this volume gives one of the clearest examples of Bergson's methodology that I have encountered (in my admittedly limited studies). This method has come to be known as Bergson's "qualitative calculus" (QC). The QC has certain obvious similarities with Hegel's dialectic: a phenomenon gets analyzed as a product of two tensional poles which define a spectum of relations between them. But the differences are also manifest. The poles, for Bergson, have none of the ontological status of Hegel's objective idealism. Nor are they so much Ideal Opposites, as they are the two ends of a relational spectrum. Bergson's relational approach is not built around a sharp, black/white oppositional structure the way Hegel's is (or at least appears to be in some readings).
The two poles for Bergson are, in this instance, what might be called "habit" and "inspiration," which lead to, respectively, static and dynamic structures. These structures are rarely if ever encountered in their pure forms, and as such the two poles are the abstracted ideal elements of a phenomenological analysis. Chapter one of _Two Sources_ focuses on morality, and gives the initial development of QC structures that Bergson will then apply throughout the rest of the book. Chapter two takes religion in its static, habit based form, and further delves into this structure along the lines of Bergson's QC. (Here, again, we see the debt to Hegel, where each stage of the dialectic leads to a deeper analysis.) Chapter three takes religion in its dynamic phase, and the final chapter summarizes and offers conclusions.
Once again, this is not a book looking to convert the faithless, nor is it preaching to the choir. It is a careful analysis along the lines of James' _Varieties of Religious Experience_. (By the by, for those who don't already know, Bergson and James were frequent correspondents, and admirers of one anothers work.)It may not be the best introduction to Bergson's thought, but it is certainly worthy of reading.
Judge For Yourself.......2002-08-25
This book is an evangelical revival for intellectuals. Here's a quote:
"And all great mystics declare that they have the impression of a current passing from their soul to God, and flowing back again from God to mankind.
Let no one speak of material obstables to a soul thus freed!"
It might delight a religious scholar but what little I was able to penetrate left me desparate for clear meaningful statements.

Very Basic Information.......2006-02-28
If you're very young and just leaving the nest this book's for you. Otherwise you already know all of this and are ready for soomething more advanced.
Exactly what I needed 7 years ago.......2004-11-01
I don't actually own this book. I only looked at it in the bookstore. So, you may want to take my advice with a grain of salt.
However, this is exactly the book that I was trying to find seven years ago when I rented and wanted to invoke a bit of style into my living space. I was even tempted to buy it now that I own my second house. The only thing that discouraged me from doing so was the beginning section, which focuses on the basics of renting--i.e. selecting an apartment.
However, the meat of the book that talks about decorating seems to be excellent. It has inexpensive and temporary decorating ideas. It is perfect if you want to spruce up your space without making permanent and expensive changes.
I can't wait for Paige Gilchrist to come out with a book for homeowners living on a pathetic budget!
Would be a great book............2004-08-27
for someone else, but not me. Just wasn't what I was looking for, but my friend loves it, all the ideas and tips have helped her out, but it just wasn't for me. I would recommend this for anyone who like a modern style and whom has never rented an apartment before, or for any college student. Good book just not for me.
I love this book and I am not decorating my first apartment.......2002-12-12
Parents definitely buy this book for your college-going kids! Others will enjoy it as well, but the style will most appeal to people under 40. The style is kind of funky-modern. I just bought the book, so I have not read the whole thing, but so far so good. It has instructions and materials lists for creating all the looks in the photos which is lacking in many interior design books. It also has general decorating tips.
Bonus: It describes typical problems to look for in an apartment and how to evaluate an apartment for these problems. It describes potential problems and red tape with the landlord, and how to avoid them, and it explains the renter's contract as well.
If you have just started exploring interior decoration, or are looking for your first apartment or tips to refresh your current one, buy this book!
Not just for first-time renters!.......2002-10-18
This book has so much information, it should have been called "Renting an Apartment".
Although this book was written for young first-time renters, the information would benefit anyone that rents their home. Even though I'm now living in my 8th apartment, and have renting experience, I found lots of tips and ideas to help make my home more comfortable and pleasing.
This book is split into two parts. The first part addresses what you need to know when renting an apartment, and includes tips on
- what to look for when scouting for a place to live, both in terms of dwelling and landlord
- how to look for a roommate
- what you're expected to pay (or not)
- what you can do in improvements
- how to keep your apartment clean
The second part, my favorite, shows you how to decorate your apartment on a budget, and includes DIY projects that are imaginative and down-right cheap, such as:
- painting walls, floors and furniture (how-to and supplies)
- window coverings (using copper pipes for curtain rods)
- separating rooms without building (hanging drapery panels)
- lighting (wastepaper basket lights)
- screens (fabric panels between dowels held straight with concrete)
The writing tone is light and fresh, and perfect for the intended audience. Photography is well done. My only (minor) complaint is that for most projects, there was only one picture of the finished project. The accompanying written instructions are detailed, but I would have preferred pictures along with them. In my view, it's easier to see how something is done, than reading it.
I recommend this book, both for the ideas, and as a starting point.

I think this book covers a lot of area in regards to successfully designing brands. The book contains specific case studies from a range of industries and target groups covering the whole process of designing a brand. It looks at creating a brand from scratch as well as redesigning/updating an existing brand. Each case study details the strengths and weaknesses of the brand, graphically shows each stage in the redesign process and the many different forms of design and presentation the brand can be used for. I found this book to be a very valuable resource.

Book Description
More than any other person, Jack C. Ellis notes, John Grierson, a Scot, was responsible for the documentary film as it has developed in English-speaking countries.
While in the United States in the 1920s, Grierson first applied the term documentary to Robert Flaherty's Moana. In 1927, Grierson returned to Britain, where he was hired to promote the marketing of products of the British Empire. The first practical application of Grierson’s theory of documentary film was Drifters, a 1929 short feature about herring fishing in the North Sea. That success led Grierson to establish the Empire Marketing Board Film Unit (later the General Post Office Film Unit).
In 1939, Grierson moved to Canada, leaving behind a legacy of some sixty British filmmakers who spread his ideas and techniques to other countries. In Canada, he progressed beyond national concerns to global problems. The National Film Board of Canada stands as the largest and most impressive monument to Grierson's concepts and actions in regard to the use of film by governments in communicating with citizens.
Ellis examines Grierson's accomplishments in detail, probing the complexities of Grierson's motivations and personality. His subject, a true titan in the world of documentary film, was the first filmmaker to use public and private institutional sponsorship—not the box office—to pay for his films. He also employed nontraditional distribution techniques, going outside the movie theaters to reach audiences in schools and factories, union halls, and church basements. Essentially, Grierson created documentary film and established an audience for it.
