Exquisite novel set in Mexico and Ireland.......2007-09-18
Finished Sarah Stonich's "The Ice Chorus" last night. Superb novel, terrific in more ways than I can count but chief among them is Stonich's way with a story and language as well as the settings: Mexico's Yucatan peninsula and Ireland. Great book for sea-lovers, too. Stonich's first novel is a great read, too: "These Granite Islands" (love that title).
A Woman Relives A Portion Of Her Life & Rediscovers Herself.......2005-05-21
The Ice Chorus is a retelling of events that shaped the life of the main character Liselle. We find her in Ireland as she tries to rebuild her life. Through her memories and conversations we find out the results of many of her life's decisions. She has fallen in love with another man and her marriage is in shambles. Her seventeen-year-old son communicates with her but we are certain that this relationship is damaged as well. With no other recourse perceived she travels to Ireland and awaits Charlie, the passionate artist who taught her to enjoy life and celebrate the beauty that she does not see for herself.
As she rediscovers herself she rediscovers her deceased father's past and the secrets that were taken to the grave only to be rediscovered by Liselle. We live life through her eyes and witness vibrant flashbacks and snippets of conversation that often lead us into a dance with her emotions. We can see how and why she has changed and now we will find out where she will go from this point forward.
This book can be deemed poetic storytelling or even a journal of sorts. It is told in a way that will inspire you to live the moment and paint what you have seen. There are so many ideas and emotions that make up this "spiritual paint" but at the conclusion you can see that Liselle has grown even more than she could have imagined as she discovers the truth.

A Lovely Slip of A Novel.......2005-04-14
As a Minnesota author (Suomalaiset: People of the Marsh; Cloquet River Press, 2004; ISBN 0972005064) who enjoys quality literary fiction, I would recommend this latest offering from another Minnesota writer. The tale is tightly woven, psychologically filling, and well drawn. Lise, the protagonist, is someone that you'll want to walk the misty beaches of Ireland's Atlantic Coast with, share a spot of tea with, and ultimately, try to understand. Surrounded by a likeable and elegently crafted supporting cast, the book isn't one that will keep you up at nights pondering "who done it". But it will make you step back and take stock of what you have, who you are, and where you came from. A wonderfully taut and brisk read.
Tries too hard........2005-03-28
This story does not ring true to me. The life portrayed is too delicate, artsy, refined(?) The author is trying too hard to prove to the reader how intelligent she is. She should get out of her own way.
What is Love? ...........2005-03-21
I was delighted by the storytelling woven into the lives of the
characters. Each characters story blends to an insight of
of their lives past and present.
The Old Irish legends of Love, characters finding love, love leaving,....and beginning again...all bringing to light the
love we all wish to have. Love of Family

Book Description
Fox is a woman as feisty as they come. Once the most sought-after scout west of the Rockies, she led folks through wild, unexplored terrain–until a gunshot wound ended her guiding career. She’s living a calmer life when a handsome stranger appears with an urgent request to take him to Denver immediately. The gold coins he offers catch Fox’s eye–and so do his sharp good looks. Fox can’t resist the chance to guide again, and can’t ignore the fire that burns in her body whenever she sees this oh-so tempting man.
Matthew Tanner has received a startling telegraph: His father is being held for ransom in Denver. With time running out, Matthew must find the best scout money can buy. When the best turns out to be a woman with gritty good looks and a wild mane of red hair, Matthew is both shocked and intrigued. Can Matthew and Fox’s mutual desire and growing love survive the perils of their journey, or will their secrets destroy each other?
Customer Reviews:
The cover should have an 'Annie Oakley' character on it!.......2006-09-26
The story is good- Fox is out for revenge against the man that stole her inheritance, her step-father. Peaches is a black man that somewhat raised her and they have been traveling together off & on all of Fox's life. Tanner shows up with 2 others guarding his ransom money and now he needs a guide to get him cross country to Denver in time to save his father's life that is in jeopardy.
The book is great. Peaches and Fox have the sweetest of relationships and the end is good (if you haven't guessed by now from other reviews). Personally, I am glad I didn't read them first- so there was a little suprise factor there for me to enjoy. And, yeah, there are parts that are unbelievable- like Tanner kissing Fox's toes straight out of her boots. But laugh it off and enjoy the story. I have enjoyed the MO books I have read and this was not disappointment!
Great historical read! .......2005-11-12
This book was interesting and I was drawn in before I even
realized it. The heroine is a feisty redhead with alot of
attitude and the things she says are outrageous! She has more
guts than the men in which she is traveling with. I especially
liked her mentor/stand-in father Peaches who is a wizened old
ex-slave who goes with her everywhere. Their relationship is
especially heart-warming considering this story is set around
the civil-war era. If you like Cindy Holby, Linda Lael Miller,
or Joan Johnston you won't be disappointed!
So wonderful you will laugh and cry outloud!.......2005-09-18
I love all of Maggie Osborn's books. But Foxfire Bride is incredible. At the beginning you are not sure if you can even relate with the heroin but you come to admire the strengths and weakness of this woman. And the hero is such a compassionate hero, you can't help but cheer for him. If you like to laugh outloud and cry, you will thoroughly enjoy this book.
Somewhat disappointed.......2005-01-24
I had high hopes for this book when I bought it, but I am somewhat disappointed. I usually like unique female heroines, but for some reason Fox was incredible unappealing. I think if she said "fricking" one more time I would have thrown the book out the window. I think the author used superficial elements to try to convey Fox as a spirited, unique, independent woman, i.e. bacon grease, rough language, cigars etc. I would have preferred the author to use a bit more character depth to convey "true grit" and independence. I agree with the other reviewer whose visual on Tanner sucking on sweaty toes says it all.
Great stuff!.......2005-01-24
I enjoyed this one very much. Maggie Osborne is an author who doesn't write your typical whiny, helpless, feminine heroine which is why I love her books so much and continue to buy them new.
Fox, one the best scouts around, and her elderly friend Peaches are eeking out a living selling ice when Fox is approached to lead an expedition by a man named Tanner who tempts her with lots of gold pieces (and his ruggedly good looks, though she'll never admit it). Fox is the best and isn't afraid to boss the men around. When she discovers Tanner's true reason for the expedition she can't refuse even though the trip will quite possibly put all of their lives in danger. During the course of the trip Fox and Tanner begin a "liason" that quickly turns into a love with no future.
This book was a great western road trip with a foul mouth, rough around the edges heroine. In comparision, Tanner seemed almost a little bland but that's a mild complaint. This book reminds me why I used to love the romance genre so very much.

Recently read, and very enjoyable.......2005-07-26
I recently read all the stories in this book over a period of a week. They are arranged in a nice, thematic way, so that similar stories are grouped together. I was amazed at the breadth of the subject matter of the stories, having previously restricted myself to Wells' speculative short stories such as "The Land Ironclads". But "The Valley of Spiders" is a spooky story of what apparently are cowboys on a chase, and the first story in the book, "A Slip Under the Microscope", is a realistic story of college students, that shows how little has changed in over 100 years. In fact, if one thing struck me about all the stories it is how modern they all are; there were no anachronisms that spoiled any story, though of course you have to put yourself back before airplanes and tanks were invented in "The Argonauts of the Air" and "The Land Ironclads". Rather than reviewing all the stories individually, I will just say that anyone who enjoys imaginative short stories will surely find much to like here.

The book includes The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine and seven selected short stories-The Crystal Egg, The Story of the Late Mr Elvesham, The Red Room, The Valley of Spiders, In the Abyss, In the Avu Observatory and The Truth about Pyecraft.

Guru of enlightenment Andrew Cohen has a radical message of evolutionary advancement. In Living Enlightenment, Cohen continues the work of his previous books and his magazine on the same topic--that enlightenment is available here and now but involves a radical transformation of both outlook and behavior. Like Krishnamurti, Cohen is relentless in his commonsense approach to spirituality, insisting that enlightenment means a complete relinquishment of the ego. This naturally leads to nonattachment, humility, responsibility, and love. In enlightenment, one's perspective shifts from the personal to the impersonal, and this means a deepening of, rather than a distancing from, constructive relationships. Although Cohen comes out of the Indian tradition, his language is thoroughly modern, with very little jargon and no references to world religions. He has a tendency to be vague on the details, but his invitation to enlightenment is clear and his challenge refreshing. --Brian Bruya
Book Description
Living Enlightenment offers a radically authentic spirituality for the twenty-first century. Engaging with some of the most challenging questions facing seekers today, this groundbreaking book illuminates the simple yet profound understanding that the spiritual evolution of each one of us is not separate from the evolution of humanity as a whole. Andrew Cohen guides us to the threshold of our highest potential, and calls on each of us to take the crucial next step. Infused with the wisdom of the ages yet expressing a wholly contemporary vision, Living Enlightenment redefines the very purpose of spiritual life for the modern Western seeker.
Customer Reviews:
All ego.......2006-06-16
I agree with the recent reviewers and those mysteriously wiped off recently and no longer here to see that dared criticise him. The problem with Cohen is his complete insecurity. He cannot for a moment bear any criticism but requests complete adulation. I read his books and attended one of his lectures. Never again. He is total ego and loves laughing at people making fun of them in front of others while he has the microphone. I know he desparately seeks enlightenment himself but surely this is not the way Andrew. Try to be nice to people.
Just Another Campus Guru.......2006-05-30
Andrew Cohen reminds me of the polished BS throwers who used to hang around the student center endlessly debating meaningless questions and trying to impress the chicks.
Anyone with a decent Jesuit education will have covered everything Cohen has to say in the first two semesters...and forgotten about it the following year.
Like those campus philosophers Cohen relies on hyperbolic language and circular reasoning to talk enlessly about nothing and make it sound profound.
The amazing thing is that there are people who believe they have heard him actually say something... just like those people who swore the emperor was actually wearing clothes.
wait a minute folks..........2005-09-20
how has Cohen and his cult members managed to wipe out every critical customer review of this book??? Cohen's Living Enlightenment is good in theory, but ask his ex-students what "living" under Cohen's authoritarian ideas for your enlightenment was like -- not so wonderful?
"if you knew what it was..........2004-01-13
...you wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole."
that famous quote from J. Krishnamurti is used by the author of "Living Enlightenment," Andrew Cohen (who is also the editor of "What Is Enlightenment?" magazine), to emphasize the enormity of the task of ego-transcendence, and seems to be the basic theme of this incredible book. despite what people like Eckhart Tolle are leading thousands of seekers to believe these days, it is Mr. Cohen's contention that attaining the goal of spiritual life--i.e., enlightenment, awakening, liberation--is much more than a matter of finding "portals to the now" or remaining "mindful." why? because according to him, "true freedom is an all-or-nothing deal. that's just the way it is--it's a spiritual law." (p. 56) and furthermore, he spells out in a remarkably inspiring way the logical fact that the attainment of an ego-transcended state is NOT for the person who attains it. if the individual claimed enlightenment just for themselves and their personal happiness and freedom, there'd obviously still be ego there. rather, the whole point of attaining enlightenment is only for the service of the "evolution of consciousness itself." (p. 123)
i don't know about you, but this stuff gets me excited. Cohen is describing life on the spiritual path as a truly cosmic pursuit--something bigger than our post-modern world could possibly handle (as some of the more cynical reviews posted here testify to). "the whole point," he says, "is that the realization of enlightenment completely destroys the status quo. it blows it to pieces. if you are lucky enough to actually succeed in your quest for liberation in this life then you will become a completely transformed human being and, believe me, you will be seeing things very differently." (pp. 23-24) this stuff is the real deal, folks. even the way the words are written on the page has a simplicity and authority about them that gives a direct transmission of Cohen's enlightened vision and passion. so read it. and live it. because if you don't make the effort to wake up and obliterate the status quo of this world to create a new possibility, who will?
No turning back.......2004-01-11
I have read many spiritual books, yet I don't know of any other that has affected me the way this one has. Andrew Cohen communicates with simplicity and precision, yet also with suprising depth and subtlety. I found myself disturbed and intrigued reading this - as many (most!)of my ideas about enlightenment were deeply shaken, replaced by a growing seriousness and demand to live a different and extraordinary human life. The fact that this was the result of reading this book should not have suprised me after reading the foreword by Ken Wilber,in which he warns us that Andrew Cohen is a serious teacher, but what did suprise me is how it seemed to happened. Just reading it, did it. By the time I realized I was intrigued, it was already too late - this book is that experiental. It has actually changed the way I view and think about life, and I find myself deeply grateful. I look forward to reading more from this man.

Good memories, Good food--simple &delicious.......2007-01-16
I lived in New Haven for many years and enjoyed going to Claire's Corner Copia at least once a week during luchtime. The food was delicious, inexpensive, and the restaurant was small and cozy, with great casual atmosphere, and a very friendly staff. I moved to the west coast in the mid-80's and really missed my weekly walk to Claire's. I was so excited to find this book! It brought back many good memories, and now I can recreate the great food I used to enjoy. The ingredients are easy to find, and the food is filling and satisfying. I also have her Claire's Corner Copia Cookbook, which I highly recommend getting as well.
Excellent.......1999-08-12
This is such an easy cookbook to follow. I hate to cook and my friend let me borrow hers and I loved it so much I'm buying my own.

Innovative.......2005-05-10
A nice little book of braiding and twisting styles. Most are easy to learn, and the illustrations are pretty good. I had a problem seeing the completed hairstyle because the photos were black and white. There are quite a few Afro-American styles that looked nice and seemed easy to accomplish. The book is a paperback and a little on the small side, probably 4x6 inches. Simple, and easy instructions.

Over-rated book of pictures........2002-09-09
I bought this book as a resource guide book, and it didn't give me any information I already didn't know. It is basically a book of pictures that is very cluttered in how it is put together. Although the photos were beautiful, after 1 week, it now is a large paper weight.
It basically just dissapointed me after I took a closer look at it.
Chicago Home Book.......2002-02-20
Nothing comes close to this book. I was going to build my dream house...I needed help, I needed advice....I needed to know who to use and what to ask...The Chicago Home Book brought me to my architect, my builder and my interior designer...my house is the best! The best thing about the book is the photos....beautiful idea generating photos of insides and outsides of the best homes in Chicago and the area. I understand it comes out each year...a new one with new photos...I love to look at what others are doing in their homes.

Customer Reviews:
A thoroughly enjoyable book........1998-03-06
Marc Roberty, author of this impressive and enjoyable book, quotes actor Dan Aykroyd's summarization of Eric Clapton: "The Bluesbreakers, Blind Faith, Cream, Derek and The Dominos -- Ladies and gentlemen, who was the cohesive force behind all these powerhouse bands? He's been called a blues man, he is synonymous with the words electric guitar. Very simply, very finely -- Mr. Eric Clapton!"
"Slowhand" traces Eric Clapton's life story from his first guitar, a Spanish Hoya purchased for him by his grandparents in the mid 1950's, to his spectacular "24 Nights" at the Royal Albert Hall in 1991. The narrative deftly highlights major events in Clapton's life, as well as his constantly shifting and changing musical direction. Swept up by the psycheadelic sixties, propelled into the 1970's on a wave of drugs and unrequieted love, lost to the world through two years of isolation, Clapton skipped from wave to wave following his brave musical instincts. And though he helped change the face of rock music during his years with Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek and the Dominos, he never strayed too far from his blues roots. During his solo years in the 1970's, he incorporated reggae and country into his style, with songs like "I Shot the Sheriff" and "Tulsa Time". Along the way, he recorded songs by blues legends such as Robert Johnson ("Crossroads Blues"), Willie Dixon ("Evil"), and Jimmy Reed ("Ain't That Lovin' You").
Roberty includes discographies from each phase of Clapton's career, as well as listing his tours and session appearances. He includes information about guitars and instruments Clapton used. And he lists major videos Clapton has appeared in. The book is also full of photographs and art reproductions. Not a single page is dull.
Eric Clapton received six Grammys in 1992, for his "Unplugged" album. In 1994 he released a long awaited blues-only album. And in 1998 he continues his musical journey with a new album, appropriately titled "Pilgrim". "Slowhand: The Life and Music of Eric Clapton" traces his formulative steps toward the pinnacle he has achieved, today.
