Too hard to follow.......2007-01-19
I didn't get very far into this one, just over 3 of the 15 hours. And I just stopped. I couldn't take it anymore.
Mostly, it didn't seem to have a very coherent plot. We went from "And here's this character now," to "oh by the way, they lived to be 88, outliving one of their children, who died etc, etc, etc" to "and back to the present..." all the time. There was absolutely no coherent storyline, everything was told in snippets here and there. Here's Henry dying, but this is him as an infant, oh! and here's him getting his first slave, okay, he's dying now, now here's his childhood... My head was just spinning. No book should make you concentrate that hard just to follow the plot.
Granted, I do not tend to go in for the deeper stuff. But this... this is something you could drown in. It was not enjoyable, it was not fun, and I wouldn't recommend it unless you A) really like deep, convoluted stuff, B) are really into the history of the US and want to listen to a story on slavery or C) feel like it would pad your reading resume to read such an `acclaimed' book. Me? I'm off to immerse myself in some fluff. At least I can float along that and enjoy it.

Hmm, how do you make a kicking Science Fiction series novel?
Take Area 51...
Add in alien sex,
an APC/Jeep war,
an underground battle,
an ... whupping in an elevator,
samurai,
ninjas,
"injuns" with M-16's,
rumors of dinosaurs,
the alleged death of a main character,
a mysterious being who can rejuvenate the ancient and crippled,
a hot tub sex scene,
and mix it ALL together with a little Viva Las Vegas...
I think you can come close to perfection with this one. Most people talk about the middle book of a trilogy being slow or weak? This was the exception to that rule. The first book was much less full than this one, and this one had a lot of energy to it, despite all the plot points, or maybe even BECAUSE of all the vibrant energy plugged into it.

This book was very well paced, the continued shifting in perceptions of the main characters towards Who Is The Enemy is always a welcome treatment, lending as it does a more intricate layer to the overly simplified plotline. The protagonists' morphing into semi-allies is also well done, I'll have to admit.
Hey Kids: This series has become more important than Deathlands because it handles a wider range of mythologies, if you can dig it. The series, though, is now more vulnerable than ever for devolving into stream of consciousness drivel from main characters. Let us hope it does not fall into that bottomless chasm as it threatened to do when the characters were spiritually transported to parallel universes.
I also would like to see more technological doodads flitting about in forthcoming novels. I certainly liked the volume that talked about the Aurora craft and its capabilities. I also hope that perhaps this series can nestle more snuggly into more UFO paranoia and Area 51 mythos. As I find that world fun to immerse myself in for a time, and apparently other readers do as well, judging from the "Area 51" novels from Tom Dougherty. And as Dean Koontz has aptly demonstrated in his Wyvern Base series, there's a lot of paranoidal mythos-spinning yarn concerning abandoned high-tech military bases. Perhaps a half-buried Crystal Palace R&D facility would be appropos in one of the future installments maybe?
Major Insights.......2001-03-20
Tigers of Heaven
This novel is one of the best Mark has written to date. It begins where Doom Dynasty left off, with Kane in the Clutches of Baron Cobalt in Area 51. I will not go into the details of what was happening to him, as it would spoil it for the reader.
Suffice to say, the reader is treated a rare glimpse into the mind and society of the Hybrid race, how they react, their views on humanity and each other, emotions, etc.
While Kane is held captive, Grant, Brigid as well as a small team of natives leave the Darks in the Titano (the name the War Wag was Christened), on a desperate rescue mission.
Along the way they encounter a group of Magistrates led by none other than Baron Sharpe himself, and an uneasy alliance is formed between both parties, as their final destination, AREA 51, remains the same. Even though their collective reasons for hitting the mythical base are different.
The novel is action packed, as you would expect, but it also gives a long overdue insight into the Albino Domi's mind, and the how's and whys she reacts the way she does. It also fleshes out this character even more so.
To add icing to the cake, several new characters are introduced in the novel, well some really re-introduced, that could prove to be great friends, or deadly foes. These characters range from several Hybrids, to Magistrates as well as the Tigers of Heaven (introduced for the first time in Outer Darkness).
Even though the Tigers play only a small role in the novel, the events that take place on their island off the western coast will play significantly in upcoming novels. We're talking some very high tech, very unusual occurrences.
Also, there is something that happens in the novel that will shock any long time reader. Well two things, if you count what happens to Grant.
Enjoy, it is well worth the read, and I personally can't wait to get my hand on Purgatory Road. Which incidentally, has Kane, Brigid and Grant prominently displayed on the cover.

Shocking! I loved it!!.......2001-03-04
I've been reading Outlanders since the first book and there's been plenty of surprsies along the way, none of shocked me like Tigers of Heaven!
This is one of the best books in the series, if not THE best. It's exciting, action-packed, full of unexpected twists and turns. There's plenty of shooting in this book, but it's not a simple shoot-em-up.
I don't want to give away the plot, but it seems like the world of Kane, Brigid, Grant and the rest of the gang at Cerberus are in for some major changes...none of them good. I really can't recommend this book highly enough.
Tigers Of Heaven........2001-02-24
As usual this latest outlanders installment has soured far beyond my wildest expectations. This wild rollcoaster ride of unexpected plot twists and shifting perceptions of both the barons and the main characters, carries this novel well beyond the sterotypical adventure/sci fi novel. With a War brewing among the barons and a strange imperator with power beyond that of even Balam, the author takes the reader on a journey of revealations and sudden unexpected events that leave the reader shocked and breathless. Who will survive? Just when you think you have things figured out and you know where each character stands things shift and a whole new prespective is revealed. In this second novel in the imperator wars trilogy the author dangles some answers to questions left unanswered in Doom Dynasty while not really given the reader what they really want. With so many questions left unanswered as this second novel ends it will leave you salivating for more.

Wonderfully sweet story.......2002-11-02
My mother bought this wonderful book for my 18-month old son and it has become one of his favorites. It is a wonderfully sweet story about the love of Grandparents for a grandchild. Several of the story items fit exactly with things my son does, making it almost seem like the story is about him. This is a book I will keep forever to remind me of what he was like as a young child.

This a 4 star not a two star book/series.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first three books in this series, and am now waiting impatiently for book 4, which I think is to be the 1st book in the second trilogy.
Yes, we have had the Tiger, the Pheonix, and the Dragon; and they were really engaging stories. I look forward to Kylie Chan building on the foundations she has created and enriching the cast of her charaters as they grow further into their roles.
The imagery in these books is fantastically reminiscent of some wonderful martial arts/asian mythology films, and I sincerely hope that this saga is considered for film. And what a fantastic location for making such a film.
Hong Kong is so well (and lovingly) presented - I found myself traveling mentally though the streetscapes and recogising locations and landmarks as they appeared; and I have to admit making mental notes to check out some of those restaurents and hope they were actually there and not just fictional constructs.
Thanks for such a pleasurable reading experience.
Excellent Refhreshing Series.......2007-09-20
Well I have to admit I was a bit sceptical when I picked up White Tiger. But then I found myself obsessed. I read all three books, White Tiger, Red Phoenix, Blue Dragon over a 5 day trip to Bangkok. These books are easy to read, and (not to over-use a cliché) real "page-turners".
There are two ways I judge books at a high level, #1: The number of times I say to myself "yeah yeah, blah blah get on with it" in my head, and #2: how I feel when I've reached the end of the series. I have to say, This book, in fact all three of them, score high with a 0 Blah Blah count, and I felt almost depressed when I finished Blue Dragon because there was no more to read.
Kylie spent a lot of time in research around Chinese mythology, and expresses the interplay of the various deities to great effect. While I don't suspect she was aiming to sneak in a sermon on Taoist philosophies, these books certainly introduce all of the right concepts of Yin and Yang, and Taoist principles through entertaining styles.
The only faults I found with the books were lack of detail in some of the confrontation scenes, and perhaps some overuse of 'Glowered', and 'Words were not necessary' :-) But overall, I would highly recommend this series of books. I can't wait for the next one.
Exciting.......2007-09-10
A terrific story I, like the above reviewer, K. Maxwell, was orginally not impressed when I started reading but as soon as I had finshed the first chapter, I was totally hooked. This is a thrilling supernatural adventure story with some love interest thrown in. This is a terrific book from a new AUstralian Author. Every page more exciting than the previous.
Emma takes a new job with Mr Chen and notices strnage things happening around her. She finds out Mr Chen is actually the Lord of the Northern Heavens and his friends are the other three winds. She gets sucked into his world in her attempt to be a better nanny to Simon, Mr CHen's Daughter.
Where the modern world and Chinese mythology meet.......2007-02-26
When I first saw this book I wasn't terribly attracted to it because I'm not that interested in martial arts and it was obviously a big theme in the book. However, this novel was a pleasant surprise to me. When Emma Donahoe agrees to go full time as a nanny for a young girl called Simone whom she has grown to love, she little realises she's about to get a culture-shock introduction into the realties of Chinese "Mythology" and the "true" martial arts courtesy of her new employer.
Although Chinese mythology forms the basis of this story, it is also firmly set in the modern world where the Hong Kong is both media and shopping mad - and even the supernatural is held up by traffic and the weather on a bad day. Although both this book and its sequel have a few slow spots overall they form a rather refreshing take on some old fantasy themes. These are worth trying even if you aren't into martial arts.
Second book is Out waiting for the third.......2007-01-31
If you like this book then keep an eye out for the second book Red Phoenix. It out in Australia already.
If you like Chinese mythology then this book is for you. The second is as good as the first and it a serious of four books.
White Tiger is the first, Red Phoenix is the Second , the third is probably Green Dragon ending with the Black Turtle. Not sure of the last two title for they have yet to be printed but I'm guessing that would be their titles.

Authentically delicious.......2002-04-02
I bought this book when my husband was working in Vietnam and said how good the food was there. So imagine how impressed I was when his response to the first thing I cooked was "tastes just like up there". That was chilli beef and noodles, and has become a staple meal in our family, along with the mild beef curry and the chicken with green beans and noodles. While the recipes sometimes seem to call for a lot of ingredients, once you have bought the basics (and some you may already have, like soy sauce and fish sauce) you probably won't have to make many one off visits to the shops for emergency supplies. The recipes make very generous serves, especially anything with rice and noodles. And I am finding that now that I live in Burma, the recipes are particularly useful for the sort of vegetables I can get cheaply and easily here as well.

This was one of the first books i bought of the The Australian Women's Weekly Cookbook series. Me and my mother were addicts to the series after that. It is simple, very thick with lots of ideas (meat, fish, chicken, desserts, eggs, vegetables) and the first few pages explain some stuff like how to peel roasted green peppers, how to seperate an egg (with pictures) and different kinds of pastas (not all pastas though) and fresh herb leaves. In the end, there is a glossary of terms and what they mean, including the exotic foods that are not usually your every day shopping food. Metric conversions are also available.
I gave it 4 stars cause im a vegetarian and follow a strict low fat low calorie diet. So the book made me hungry when looking at it. I would give the book 5 stars if and only if this was dedicated to vegetarian book. If only such book exists, i would not worry about having good tasty food to eat for life

Okay but could have been better.......2004-10-29
The first thing that I noticed about this book is it had a lot of pictures and not alot of info on how to airbrush t-shirts. However I did find the book useful in creating new designs and to know what needed to be done and in what order. Over all it is a good book to get you exited about airbrushing on textiles but doesn't give you enough information on on to do it.
