Book Description

Set against the harsh reality of an unforgiving landscape and culture, The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon provides a vision of the Old West unlike anything seen before. The narrator, Shed, is one of the most memorable characters in contemporary fiction: a half-Indian bisexual boy who lives and works at the Indian Head Hotel in the tiny town of Excellent, Idaho. It's the turn of the century, and the hotel carries on a prosperous business as the town's brothel. The eccentric characters working in the hotel provide Shed with a surrogate family, yet he finds in himself a growing need to learn the meaning of his Indian name, Duivichi-un-Dua, given to him by his mother, who was murdered when he was twelve. Setting off alone across the haunting plains, Shed goes in search of an identity among his true people, encountering a rich pageant of extraordinary characters along the way. Although he learns a great deal about the mysteries and traditions of his Indian heritage, it is not until Shed returns to Excellent and witnesses a series of brutal tragedies that he attains the wisdom that infuses this exceptional and captivating book.

5 out of 5 stars A sheer delight!.......2007-10-06

The young narrator, Shed is a bisexual half Indian boy who lives Out-In-The-Shed (hence his name) of a whorehouse owned by Ida Richilieu in Excellent, a very small town in Idaho at the beginning of the twentieth century. Out in the shed he is much in demand as he provides relief for many male customers while he earns his keep doing chores for Ida. There are many uncertainties about Shed's origins and parents, se he sets off to find his true self, and his real name. On his way he meets Dellwood Barker and makes eventually contact with some Indians; he thinks he finds some answers, but there is more to come. When Shed returns to Excellent all goes well for a time back at Ida Richilieu's Indian Head Hotel, with Ida, Shed, Dellwood and Alma Hatch forming their own unique family, strength against the troublesome Mormons who are taking over the town, until disaster strikes and everything falls apart.

There are plenty of interesting and idiosyncratic characters populating the tale, and the colourful story moves from drama to tragedy, from harrowing events to very tender moments, all with plenty of humour. However the real pleasure is to be found in the narration itself, Shed's way of expressing himself is delightful: "what my ears heard was me yelling the loudest I'd heard my mouth yell . . .", "I just let my feet and legs go . . .they took me out into the clearing . . ." are typical of Shed's logical thinking, and his endearing way of expressing himself.

It is a very beautiful story, and very moving. Shed is an appealing character who loved those close to him, and especially Dellwood, the only man he ever truly loved. It is a story about prejudice and dreams, about survival against adversity. The final pages are particularly heart rending as everything about Shed's life disintegrates; yet there is also hope and a future.

4 out of 5 stars A New Voice.......2007-05-18

The narrator, Shed, comes through as an intriguing, new story-telling voice. The reader is treated to a group of unique characters who oppose the bigotry of thinkers on the religious right. Fascinating stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Only One Tom Spanbauer.......2006-11-27

What an excellent writer! This is one book I'll never get rid of. Some touchy subjects, mainly prejudice, incest, rape etc. I don't think that anyone could write like Mr. Spanbauer. Explicit, and frank so naturally it is a little offensive. I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars A Million stars: the best novel of America I have ever read.......2006-11-15

First I belong to a bookgroup that has met every month for the last 15 years. This is one of only two books we have read twice. And we are a picky bunch of smart people. :-)

When I read the reviews here, again, tears are in my eyes, again. There was once an audio version of this book that I almost got killed while listening to because my tears made it impossible to see the road at one point. On the other hand there are so many parts of the book that make a man laugh out loud.

It is a tale of sexuality, race, America, religion, passion, cruelty, gender, meaning, and life like no other novel I have ever read. As a voracious and consistent reader of way too much education this novel stands like the first wonder of the literary landscape in my soul.

For the new reader: one reviewer "gave up" at a bit into the book. It MUST be appreciated as an oral novel. If you don't read it aloud to yourself you need to let Shed speak into your head as a talking person rather than as words on a page or any other type of narrator. This IS an aural novel.

The sex is graphic and wonderful, the passions unequalled, the pain intense, the joy is palpable, and the influence on a person is permanent after reading this novel.

I loved Brokeback Mountain and love its author all the time, "The Shipping News" is amazing. But the reviewer who said this surpassed Brokeback mountain wasn't saying enough since this is a novel of grand visions of life.

Normally I am somewhat articulate. "The Man Who Fell In Love With The Moon" trancends articulation and leaves me with only the ability to provide pictures of the shadow of what Spanbauer accomplishes in this grand American novel.

5 out of 5 stars Life changing.......2006-05-10

A handful of books in a lifetime touch one to the core, and this one did it for me. Spanbauer's unique writing style manages to convey pieces of the human experience often left unspoken. His take on "the human sex story" is priceless. The narrator's voice stayed with me for a long time after putting the book down. As fantastic and unbelievable as the story is, the novel speaks the truth in a way that cracked my heart open.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Goofy and fun.......2002-08-05

This is the first of two books in a long series about the Randall family and, principally, the desire of Jake Randall to marry off his younger brothers. Wyoming Winter deals with Chad and Pete and both books are very enjoyable. One of the best parts of these books is that characters from the first novel feature in the second and I am sure that this will be the case in "Summer Skies". I have just ordered Summer Skies as I cannot wait to see how the other two brothers get married off.

Big tip: if you are pregnant and feeling fat, bloated or unloved, you are just going to love the second book, Cowboy Daddy

5 out of 5 stars Got To Love Those Randall Men!.......2002-06-15

Is it possible to fall in love with a character I think it is. This is the case with Wyoming Winter I loved this book I purchased it from my local bookstore and didn't get the chance to read it right away but when I did I found myself staying up til 2 in the morning just to finish it. I was excited that Judy Christenberry decided to reissuse the Randall Brothers series because I have been looking for the books for some time now. I have read "Cowboy Come Home" the story of Randall cousin Griffin first not realizing until it was to late that there were other books in the series. This a light hearted read and will without a doubt have you laughing out loud at some the characters descriptions and interactions. I recommand it and "Summer Skies" to any romance reader.

4 out of 5 stars I Love A Good Series.......2002-05-31

I read "Summer Skies" first but this one should be read first. The Randall brothers are a good bunch of guys without too many hangups to brood over. They just need the perfect women for them to show up and whip them into shape.

I also bought "Randall's Riches" about the next generation and look forward to more coming out in this series this summer and fall. (2002)

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia holds up.......2007-06-12

Nothing like seeming cool to a sixteen year old. I loved this series when I was a teen and was scared it wouldn't hold up over time. The return of Trigon and the battle of hearts, minds and souls of Raven and the Teen Titans is still a compelling read, and more of guilty pleasure because you don't have to wait a month between issues.
Perez and Wolfman created the best Titan storylines that haven't become completely hokey overtime. Buy it, borrow it, read it, share it.

4 out of 5 stars New Teen Titans: The Terror Of Trigon.......2007-03-08

Overall, I like the clever, crafty Marv Wolfman, the master of subterfuge and misdirection--the man who juggles multiple subplots while building severe tension throughout, oh, maybe twenty issues of a comic book. Marv Wolfman pulls tricks involving behind-the-scenes villains very well. Marv Wolfman likes to tantalize the reader with some new hidden menace lurking in the shadows, just as the one main storyline is wrapping up. He has often been so ambitious in his multi-issue plotting that he leaves a series--or a series is cancelled--before all plotlines are resolved.

The Terror Of Trigon is not written by that Marv Wolfman. It is written by a Marv Wolfman (okay, okay, it's the same guy) who favours the direct approach. No subplots, no intricate build-up, no fighting through five minor villains to find out who's behind it all, no lurking in the shadows, no subtlety, no slowing down. Trigon just comes to Earth to claim the planet, and his daughter's spirit. But his daughter is Raven, of the Teen Titans. And Raven does not fall under the thrall of her father without a fight!

Actually, she does fall under the thrall of her father without a fight. Just some screaming. Raven is my favourite Teen Titan, but considering that this is a key "Raven story", she's not in it very much--she's been claimed. It's up to the rest of the Titans to follow her to another dimension, to the pacifist realm called Azarath, which has been torn apart by Trigon's legions. The Titans battle nightmare creatures in a last-ditch struggle to protect Azarath's few survivors. Meanwhile, Trigon and a hideously transformed Raven finally leave the dimension that held Trigon prisoner, and arrive on Earth. Awesomely powerful, Trigon remakes the Earth in his image, and all superheroes are incapacitated; we see disturbing images of a "frozen", helpless Superman. And forget Batman.

It's up to the Teen Titans--along with Lilith and Wally West, who had been Kid Flash and closer to Raven than anyone--to find a way back to Earth and use whatever powers (and hidden weapons) they have to stop Trigon, even if Raven is beyond saving. But they don't get much chance; no sooner are they back on Earth when, almost immediately, we see their physical forms embedded in one of Trigon's huge tendrils of stony matter that now cut across the black sky of New York, their frozen faces in eternal torment as, Somewhere Else, they each fight shadow versions of their own worst selves.

Pretty intense, eh? Have I captured the mood? I like this story, a lot, but it is a simple, direct piece of in-your-face writing...which does allow for some amazing visuals as rendered by penciller George Perez, with a lot of the inking by Romeo Tanghal. The splash pages of demonic city-scapes, while a towering Trigon stands over all, are just as effective as some of the close-ups of the anguished faces of the characters. You must see this artwork...because it ultimately locks in my four-star rating. Perez's art makes any type of paper look like the glossy kind, and the colours here are astonishing.

So I accept what is essentially a story with no real complexity. One might argue that the sequences where we see each Titan, in his or her turn, fighting a shadow-shelf spouting soul-destroying temptations, add an emotional complexity, but I don't think so. This is a fairly regimented, perhaps too orderly, treatment of each hero's weak spot--a summing up of each character's doubts in a few predictable panels. I'm far more impressed by the real-world Wally West, who's sense of hopelessness during all the battles seems very realistic. He's basically recruited for this mission almost against his will, and his reactions to Raven, and the large-scale destruction, and being wrenched out of his formerly quiet life, make him the most interesting character here.

Don't misunderstand me; I love this story, for what it is. But I don't love this TYPE of story, as compared to say, The Judas Contract--in fact, the whole Terra era--where subtlety rules, and things simmer for a while and then boil over. Yes, there had been build-up to Raven's capitulation to her father, but it still wasn't complicated cloak-and-dagger stuff (though I do love her cloak! oh, Raven, you are a visual treat, Perez'd or not), and it's not part of this graphic novel.

The Terror Of Trigon is an ode to The Main Event, The Battle Royale (hold the cheese, hold the lettuce, hold the pickles, hold the mayo but not the mayhem), The Final Confrontation--and as such, you couldn't ask for more. You certainly couldn't ask for more suitable art. I have to give Wolfman credit for versatility, I guess; he can stop juggling danger and simply throw it at you, when it works better. But I still love him best when he's up to something sneaky.

5 out of 5 stars Major chaos in the lives with the Titans.......2003-10-08

I've collected and read every story with the Teen Titans, New Titans, Team Titans, ect. but this story line is most felt by all Titans fans. The emotions felt by the characters is also felt by the readers...the art work is superb in itself. Plenty of times the world thought that the Titans were a knockoff of the X-men but they have proven time and time again that they are in a league of their own. Especially with this storyline with Trigon, a creature of almost limitless power, whos daughter is a member of a team who opposes him.
To show the extremity of the situation they show that even Superman,Batman (who usually can figure a solution to anything), and the entire Justice League couldn't stop him.
The creative minds of Wolfman, Perez (both my favorite), and the others brought out our own fears when they had the Titans go through theirs. The most horrifying was a tie between Nightwing and Changeling.
I was hoping that they would make an animated movie with this storyline (not with the current Teen Titans cartoon).
The cover of this paperback is the only thing I disagree with.
It's a minor glich with Cyborg when they should show the Nightmarish Cyborg without the cybornetic implants.
To make this story more monumental they should have it with crossovers with the other DC titles to show the sitiuations during the storyline.

    5 out of 5 stars Terriffic!!!.......2003-08-04

Now, i read this collection some years ago, perhaps as many as four years ago, but every single time i re-read it, it is no less effective in its original goal, which was no doubt to bring a fresh, slightly skewed perspective to comic storytelling. More often than not, by mainstream America, comic books are seen as mere children's entertainment, as they've been viewed since their strange conception. This read was one of the very first(alongside Mr. Warren Ellis's works, Mr. Clarmont's tales, and Mr. Moore's yarns)character driven comic tales i'd ever read in which the character's motives and actions actually mattered. You could see the emotion in the drawings. You could feel every sharp taunt, every shocking revelation, every crass word, every desperate betrayel, and what's more, you knew how the characters felt upon the terrible devestation visited upon New York, and more to the point, their team. Their family. Nightwing. Evolution. Starfire. Emotion in it's most pure, achingly honest form. Cyborg. Hope, strength and insecurity unified. Kid Flash. Extremely human. Changeling. A Normal eye into the terror of the situation. Wonder Girl. Morality and Honesty personified.Team Heart. Raven. Terrifying. You felt the hopelessness of the team's situation, you actually felt their love for each other. Outside of X-men and The Avengers, you don't feel that kind of thing anymore. Or rarely, if so, thanks to Mr. Morrisson, Mr. Johns, Mr. Winnick, among others, though few they be. More than any other comic, which, because books like this one, are now being viewed as a slightly more adult format of mature, meaningful storytelling, this book, The New Teen Titans, allowed me to see just how real these paper and ink characters could be. To this day, i compare every other work i read, as far as character driven tales and interesting interaction, to this book, in it's heyday. Wolfman & Perez, what can i say? They sit upon the nigh unattainably high crest of storytelling greatness alongside Claremont & Byrne, Moore & Curtis, Moore & Veldt, Millar & Hitch, Ellis & Hitch...this is a read that i reccommend to anyone willing to see comics as they truly are in the 21st century....extremely intelligent, innovative, very creative and thoughtprovoking.

    5 out of 5 stars A comic classic!.......2003-07-09

I just picked up my copy of this trade and reread it as I have countless times since the story's original run in the summer of 1984 prior to starting high school. As always, I was THOROUGHLY entertained! George Perez is the MASTER artist and it shows throughout the story. The high points of his art are the first two parts inked by himself and the staggering amount of detail he always throws in. Look at the "spires" twisting through the city and you'll know what I mean. I just wish he could've inked his pencils through the entire story although Romeo Tanghal backs him up quite well in parts 3 thru 5. Marv Wolfman expertly handles the execution of the subplot he and George had set up since the very beginning in 1980...Raven walking her father's road. I don't find it derivative of X-Men's Phoenix as implied by others since this subplot was around since the first story arc in '80. The subplot of the Titans each facing their fears and evil selves is effectively chilling. Just check this book out along with The Judas Contract. You don't find many stories like these in comics OR in most novels these days. Enjoy!

    Book Description

This vast compendium of information contains hundreds of entries on the sometimes obscure, complicated, and mysterious (but always fascinating) funeral customs of dozens of cultures. Topics cover the burial and afterlife customs of China, the Greco-Roman world, India, the Near East, ancient Israel, the Iron Age Celts, Africa, Native Americans, Lapps, Islamic countries, modern Western society, and many other ancient and contemporary cultures. More than a gathering of information, this essential reference draws out the underlying meaning of funeral and afterlife traditions. It makes available a variety of human responses to that most fundamental reality of life: death.

    5 out of 5 stars Just Excellent.......2006-06-05

I got this book from a bookseller in my area and was captivated by such diverse accounts. I have some time on my hands and I plan to explore this topic very deeply. I think I will check out everything by Professor Taylor too. This was a surprise and a treat.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-10-17

This is quite simply put an amazing piece of scholarship that I just happend to pick up at used book store. I am a retired accountant and have never studied such things but was always interested in other cultures and how beliefs are different in different places of the world or in history. I can't tell you that I understand everything in here but this book taught me something important about myself and how I relate to the rest of the world. It's funny how a little book can make such a difference. Actually, the book is not little but it's such an entertaining read for those of us addicted to the History Channel, NPR and documentaries.

5 out of 5 stars Good Specialty Find.......2004-10-10

This is a very good scholarly collection of articles about death and burial rituals. We ordered this for the library after one of our high school students used it for a report. Her teacher asked us to purchase it.

If your topic is death and burial rituals, look no further. This Berkeley professor collects everything you need in a way that makes sense.

My husband, not involved in the library sciences, thinks it is strange for me to be reading this book at night. I try to read and write about all new purchases for the library.

    5 out of 5 stars Worth it.......2004-06-08

This book is first rate. A really terrific find from the library that I ended up purchasing on-line for a decent price. Lots of information and it's well organized. You get a good study of comparative religion by way of detailed analysis of cross-cultural and cross-religio burial ritual and ideas about the afterlife. I see that the author has co-authored another book that got a terrific review. I might go ahead and get that too. Of course, it's a specific niche topic and you should share at least a general interest before buying Death and the Afterlife: A Cultural Encyclopedia.

This book is wonderful, and the recipes are so tasty. If you want to lace baked goods with soy, buy this book. Your kids will love the great muffins, cookies, cakes and pies. The Apple Spice Cake is so good, you will never make it without soy again. It is amazing. I highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good but could be better.......2005-03-09

This cookbook was excellent at cutting out a lot of the fat and replacing those high fat items with tofu or other soy-based products. Unfortunately, I found a LOT of sugar to be in the recipes. I realize this book is entitled "Beyond Low Fat Baking..." thus indicating that it had cut back on the fat, and "...Cancer Fighting Foods For The Millennium" indicates the soy, but all that sugar is not healthy either. So many people have Type II Diabetes, and everyone in the US seems to be overweight, I wish she addressed this issue as well.

The recipes I tried were very flavorful and tasty. In fact, there was a delicious recipe for a Spice Cake in there that my family loved.

If sugar is not an issue for you, then pick this book up. But if you need to cut back on the sugar, and you do not know how to do that on your own, then do not get this book.

That Tofu and Pumpkin Pie Treat
My advise is simple. I've made this one from Beyond Low Fat Baking over two dozen times. It's the best. Go ahead--try it. Made with a rich grandma type molasses, spicy ginger, cinnamon, and allspice, this pumpkin pie isn't like any other. Why not? It is powerfully enriched with that great American cuisine - tofu.

Yes! This book is about baking with tofu. Now, come on. Give it a chance. The author, Shirleen, has proved that tofu has earned a lot of respect these days. When flopped into a handy-dandy blender, it comes out looking exactly like fluffy, white cream cheese. I tried it. It works. You do bake with cream cheese, now don't you? Of course you do.

The author points out that when blended, tofu looks and reacts in baked products much as cream cheese does. The advantage: tofu is a powerful-packed, vitamin and mineral rich food. The beauty of it is that it just happens to blend right in with the food it is cooked with. Add blended tofu to chocolate, and it picks up the flavor of the chocolate. Toss it in cream cheese, and it tastes like cream cheese. Blend it in pumpkin. Yep, it tastes like pumpkin. That's why it works so well in pumpkin pie. You'll never know that stuff is in there. By the way, pumpkin straight from the can doesn't appeal to many of us either. But, dump in molasses and spices-it's a pie to dream about. Pile on a dollop of whipped cream-it's the American tradition. It's part of the Great Thanksgiving Feast.

To top it off, tofu not only adds a hefty dose of nutrition, but as the author says, tofu added to baked goods actually makes them better. So this Thanksgiving, try something new. Try that tofu and pumpkin thing. Do it for yourself. Do it for your family. Do it because it just plain taste G-O-O-O-O-O-D!

                      1 package active dry yeast
                      ¼ cup warm water (110°-115°F)
                      3 tablespoons granulated sugar
                      2 teaspoons salt
                      1 tablespoon cooking oil
½ cup tofu, drained and mashed
2 cups nonfat milk, scaled and cooled
                      ¼ cup vital gluten
                      5-6 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

                      HERB COATING

                      3 tablespoons cooking oil
                      2 teaspoons parsley
                      2 teaspoons oregano
                      2 teaspoons thyme
                      2 teaspoons basil

In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Using a food processor or mixer, combine sugar, salt, oil, and tofu. Add to yeast. By hand, stir in milk, vital gluten, and 1-2 cups all-purpose flour. Beat 1-2 minutes. Stir in enough remaining flour to make a stiff dough that pulls away from sides of bowl.

Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until smooth and elastic, adding more all-purpose flour, if necessary, to keep dough from sticking to surface. Place in a bowl coated with nonstick cooking spray, turning once to oil top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1-2 hours.

Punch dough down. Divide into six parts. In a small mixing bowl, combine the herb-coating ingredients. Set aside. Pull dough into 9-inch circles. Brush each with herb coating. Cut dough into 8 pie-shaped wedges. Beginning with wide end, roll each wedge into a crescent. Arrange on cookie sheets coated with nonstick cooking spray. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1-2 hours.

Preheat oven to 350° F. Bake 20-25 minutes or until tops are golden brown. Remove and let cool on wire racks.

I'm not an expert sewer, but the patterns were very easy to follow, and gave me great jumping off points to make similar clothes for different sized dolls. I loved the attention to detail to make the doll a period piece, as well as a plaything. I would recommend it to anyone looking for some inspiration.

                              Book Description

From practical storage to gorgeous display, nothing beats a basket--or Country Living's wonderfully imaginative ideas for using them throughout the home. The attractive photos tell the story, as they show off an array of different basket styles, all cleverly coordinated with overall decor. A large woven basket serves as a planter, and it harmonizes perfectly with a twill-weave trunk that doubles as an end table. For a breathtaking home gallery, install a shelf above a doorway and arrange a variety of richly patterned Venezuelan coiled baskets for all to admire. Pile fruit high atop willow pedestal baskets and place them on the kitchen table. Fill a deep rectangular basket with towels and keep it tubside. Every look is lovely, classic, and country beautiful.

                                    Book Description

Never before in paperback: The high times-and hard times-of six of the greatest living rhythm and blues artists, told in their own words

"Somebody has to pay the dues," says LaVern Baker. Here are the remarkable stories of six dazzlingly talented performers who blazed the R & B trail-the story of the performers' music and also of their struggle against racism and financial exploitation: Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker, two of the most popular female black singers of the 1950s...Little Jimmy Scott, whom Madonna calls the only singer who ever really made her cry...Charles Brown, master of the "club blues" style...Floyd Dixon, a more rambunctious fellow-traveler...and the earthy, urbane Jimmy Witherspoon, who recorded some of the biggest R & B hits ever.
