(three and a half stars) Not exactly Swift, but entertaining nevertheless.......2006-07-20
Obviously, "The Mulching of America," doesn't quite measure up as one of Harry Crews' best works -- I would put "The Knockout Artist," "Feast of Snakes," "Body," and the two novellas "Car" and "Gypsy's Curse" well ahead of it. Warts and all though, and some very stilted dialogue (which would continue in Crews' subsequent and last novel, "Celebration"), "Mulching" is a hell of a ride, with twists and turns so unpredictable, it's almost dizzying. In his satire of corporate America, I wouldn't say that Crews is the next Jonathan Swift, but I truly doubt this was his intention. Instead, we are given the typical Crews mix of eccentric characters in hyper-realistic surroundings, with, of course, a shocking ending.
Here, Hickum Looney, a relatively successful door-to-door Miami salesman of soap products, who has no other life, learns the hard way that he should never outsell his demented, hare-lipped boss, known as "The Boss" a/k/a "The Lip," and later known as Elmo Jeroveh (which isn't his name either). The Boss, who gets a perverse pleasure of beating the crap out of his chauffeur, Pierre Lafarge, and masseur, Russell Muscle (a recurring Crews character), is perhaps the strangest, most grotesque Crews character in any of his novels, which, if you've read some of his books, you would understand is really saying something.
"The Mulching of America," doesn't quite work as satire, or even as a cohesive novel. However, it's well worth the wild ride, and lends additional proof to the fact that the unique Harry Crews is one the best post-Faulkner Southern writers.
Pretty good.......2005-07-10
"Mulching" is a fairy tale turned upside-down. Hickum Looney is a lonely salesman who seems to know of nothing but work. He sells soap and other soap-like products for a big company that is micromanaged (absolutely) by a completely deranged, cleft-lipped midget with a nasty violent streak. This is a hallucinogenic parody about corporate life and soaring corporate greed. The plot itself makes very little sense and the book suffers from a surplus of dialogue that is sometimes as painful as it is unnecessary.
A poor showing from Crews.......2002-03-25
I LOVE some of Harry Crews' work so this came as a real disappointment. It seems designed to work as a sort of anti-establishment fable, and some of the characters are typical of Crews' better work. But this book lacks the heart and the careful plotting of the better books. It's almost as if this is self-parody, a kind of Harry Crews-meets-Soylent Green. I don't suggest this unless you are a committed fan!
A Man's Gotta Eat.......2000-05-16
For many years Crews has been one of my favorite novelists; his personal life is an astonishing example of how endurance can conquer tragedy. Futhermore, the early '90s books, BODY and THE KNOCKOUT ARTIST had him back on the track he had cut with the early novels. Unfortunately, the same can not be said for this near travesty. MULCHING, as an idea, has great promise, but the work reads like a rough draft. The author wants so badly for the audience to embrace the bizarre protagonists of this book, that he sacrifices plot and often sense to accomodate them. Rather than a scathing sendup on American business, MULCHING becomes a parody of its own ideas, a product without substance.
Satriristic Crews.......2000-04-13
Although this book was not as strange, or as blatently shocking and funny as Crews' other masterpieces, this book is truly one of his greatest, and one of the greatest social satires to date. In the spirit of "Death of a Salesman" and in the tone of a truly tortured soul, this book was witty, remarkable, and brilliant.

Book Description
David Eddings’ acclaimed series, The Belgariad, reaches its stunning conclusion in these final two gripping novels. Continue on this magnificent journey and be entranced by a saga of strange lands and peoples, of prophecy and strife set against the background of a seven-thousand-year war of men, Kings, and Gods.
The quest may be nearing its end, but the danger continues. After discovering a shocking secret about himself he never could have imagined—all in pursuit of the legendary Orb—Garion and his fellow adventurers must escape a crumbling enemy fortress and flee across a vast desert filled with ruthless soldiers whose only aim is to destroy them. But even when the quest is complete, Garion’s destiny is far from fulfilled. For the evil God Torak is about to awaken and seek dominion. Somehow, Garion has to face the God, to kill or be killed. On the outcome of this dread duel rests the future of the world. But how can one man destroy an immortal God?
“Fabulous . . . Eddings has a marvelous storyteller style . . . exceedingly well portrayed and complex people. . . . More! More! More!”
—ANNE MCCAFFREY

Love it, always have!.......2007-08-15
Approximately 15 years ago, I was given a copy of Pawn of Prophecy (Belgariad). I quickly read all the Belgariad, then the Mallorean and moved on to Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress. I have never read anything like these books. Over the last 15 years I have read all these books at least 20 times. Everytime I read the series something else comes out of the books that i either didn't notice last time or that became more important as I aged. David and his wife Leigh Eddings intersperse just enough philosphy and aged wisdom to enhance the reading experience. Dialog is often funny, while maintaining the seriousness of the story. The characters are some of the most engaging characters I have ever read, and they will grow with you.
For a great read, and an engaging read, I recommend you read the best series of books I have ever read.
This may be another save the world story, but worth reading.......2007-06-25
This is the second installment of the Belgariad, finishing out the tale of Garion and his group of friends. Though the Belgariad Volume One is somewhat stronger and a better read, This second half of the tale finishes the story in a way that keeps the readers attention. He develops the characters even more, and they were my favorite part of the entire story.
At the end of Volume One, Garion and his friends have defeated Ctuchik and in the process caused Rak Thol to destroy itself. This book picks up right where that last one left off and continues with the groups travels to get to Riva on the Isle of the Winds. The beginning of the story is quite engaging, but it tends to get a bit tedious towards the middle. But the ending comes back around and grabs the reader refusing to let go until the last page is turned. We follow along as Garion decides to go off on his own with Silk and Belgarath for his meeting with the evil god Torak, and leaves Aunt Pol and Ce'Nedra behind to deal with the Kings of the lands of the West. They are forced to raise an army, mostly of Ce'Nedra's doing. This is where the story begins to slow. Once the army is formed and the marching finally comes to an end, a battle begins at Thull Mardu, and from then on the reading is fast and entertaining.
I thought this book was a great ending to this enjoyable series. I gave it three stars only because I enjoyed volume one slightly more. I plan on tackling the next series The Mallorean in the near future. Hopefully it will be just as entertaining as this story was!
Wondrous.......2007-05-22
Part 2 of a wondrous series of books. The author is amazing at captivating his audience.
The Belgariad.......2007-01-21
The books were in excellent condition. David Eddings's story of Belgarion keeps the reader enchanted throughout the series.
Great Reading.......2006-11-13
I was introduced to this series a couple of years ago and I've been in love with it ever since. I can't believe I never came across it sooner. Of course now that I've read it I come across it in book stores all the time now. This series is a beautiful series for all readers. I wouldn't limit it to fantasy lovers because it is simply a terrific series. It has everything you can ever want to read in a book - humour, fear, action and satisfaction that good does indeed have a say in what goes on in the world. The characters come alive in your head without even trying, the storyline is addictive so it's best to either buy all the books in the series from the start or make plans to get it as soon as you can.
It was great to get these books in 4 books instead of 10. I still re-read this series and I've recently bought them as christmas presents. It's an excellant buy for any avid reader or even for those you might want to encourage to read. For all those who do buy this series, check out Belgarath and Polgara - the companion editions.

Excellent!.......2004-11-09
If you like Sci-Fi and you like Space, then You've GOT to read Larry Niven's Man Kzin books. He's gotten together with scientists and over 20 writers and created a so-fi world unlike any that's ever been created.
His sci-fi world will continue perpetuating itself long after he's gone because many young writers have bought into his sci-fi version of space as well as MANY older well established ones.
Ummmm.... Very Avoidable............2001-11-21
This one is 1.5 stars....
If you have another choice, use it. This book is not really that good. It can be read, but it's really not a lot of fun. I'm kicking myself for even buying it. Especially after I read the first one and didn't like it at all....
Larry Niven is a very good author. Jerry Pournelle is also very good. I am not sure what happened in this book.
Again, if you have other choices, they are probably better.
Good and Bad.......2001-06-04
The first story, a sequel to Cathouse is very good--with plausible action and an interesting theory of why the Neanderthals became extinct.
The second story is auful with plot holes non-sensical dialogue and is a fourth-rate rip-off of Casablanca--right down to the pitiful woman who is willing to sleep her way so that her husband and she can get to a better life. Absolutely terrible!
Worth it for the first story--don't waste your time with the second.
Enjoyable, as was the first in the series........2001-05-21
This is the second book in a series in which Larry Niven invites other
authors to write stories set in his world, stories dealing with the
interactions between humanity and the Kzinti, a warrior race evolved
from carnivorous hunting cats rather than omnivorous monkeys. This
book is a perfectly enjoyable sequel to the first collection, and like
the first collection, it is a good but not a great read.
Cool........1999-07-24
In the second installment of the Man-Kzin Wars, one of the most interesting Kzinti characters is introduced: Chuut Riit. I love it when they get into the personalities of these aliens, cause it's just plain absurd, and you want to read more. Like, at one point, you're introduced, albeit briefly to a Kzinti computer nerd. A KZINTI computer nerd!!! This is just cool. I'm sorry, but in dealing with Man-Kzin Wars books it all comes down to that. Can't say more than that. Cool.

Book Description
Collectible Enameled Ware: American & European is a celebration of those vintage wares that humbly served in the kitchens and households of the past, but have since achieved status as highly sought-after antiques. It's not only American-made enameled ware that's creating such a stir.European enameled ware, with its vibrant colors and spectacular graphic designs, is also highly in demand. A concise text and over 375 color photographs with value ranges offer antiques dealers, collectors, and interior designers a close-up look at the beautiful examples of enameled ware produced throughout Europe and the United States between the late 1800s and 1940. Decorative patterns, floral graphic designs, one-of-a-kind items-these are but a few of the attributes that lead many collectors to think of antique enameled ware as relics of a lost art.
Customer Reviews:
For collectors, lovers or just curious : a must read !.......1999-06-06
I don't feel useful to type 1000 words here, anyone reading this book will understand all the passion than enameled ware can arouse, and all the work produced by the authors to show so numerous and beautiful pictures. These everyday utensils has been used during decades in so many worlwide houses, but how many housekeepers did realize as much it was difficult to produce ? Who knows the differences between circa 1800's and 1900's items, how to recognize an entirely handpainted pattern from a silk-screen printing just enhanced by hand, or how to get sure than this is a complete coffee jug or unfortunately a coffee biggin without its lid ? A good advice : just read this book, then keep it where you're sure to find it again immediately

If you weave, you need this book!.......2004-12-29
I never really understood how to correctly warp a loom until I got this book. It's so much easier than I thought and much easier to understand than any other book focusing on warping only. I think it's even better than taking a class because you can read and warp at your own pace without being distracted by someone elses' bad habits or personal preferences.
This book is good for begining as well as advanced weavers.......1998-06-30
Beginers will learn about the set up of a hand loom and more experienced weavers will see the advantages this method of dressing a loom.
This book takes a weaver step by step through the warping of a loom. It is easy to understand and the method discussed works! I have noticed that setting up a project is easier and the results are better.
For Beginning weavers, this is a must!.......1997-09-30
Cary Carrett's concise, easy to read and follow instructions for warping a loom without help is all a beginning weaver needs to get off to a great start. Complete with diagrams and step by step description of her method, which works, by the way, this one book provides the solution to the problems which tend to block our enjoyment of weaving. The BEST yet!.......2007-02-19
I've ordered 6 books, and this was the BEST of the lot! (published by Reader's Digest) Yes, it's a 1994 copyright, but the looks & styles haven't changed that much in 13-years. There are over 200 photos that lend to a myriad of ideas for each room of your home. Each chapter (there are 5 in this 192-page hardcover book) outlines what one needs to consider when deciding on a style/look for windows. I found the book VERY THOROUGH: advice on considerations for window shapes/sizes, room-by-room inspirational ideas, actual step-by-step instructions for creating each style (with sketches) for all levels of sewing ability, how to measure one's windows, photos & descriptions of all types of fabric, trims, & shades and the why/when/purpose of using them; sewing techniques & fabric care, etc.; I could go on and on! There are so many wonderful window treatments, that I wish I had more windows now! I'm certainly not disappointed with this book -- in fact I'm absolutely THRILLED. Had I received this book first, I wouldn't have ordered the other 5!
Nothing ultimate about it.......2007-01-18
Nothing "ultimate" about this book. Gives a few general suggestions and directions, but does not offer anything different or unusual. Pictures and ideas are limited and not worth the cost of the book. You're better off with an Architectural Digest magazine if you're looking for ideas.
Afraid I'm Not That Good With Illustrations.......2006-11-25
I bought four books in my quest to learn to properly sew curtains and drapes. I have been sewing since girlhood, but simple curtains and throw pillows are the farthest I've gotten into home decorating sewing. (I'm a grandma now).
This book only got 2 stars because of the lack of photos, not of finished window treatments, but of projects in the making. I find the illustrations not too good and in most cases too difficult to follow. Guess what? That leaves a person having to figure it out on her own - guess I could have done that without the book!
In fairness to the author, this book did have something the others did not. This book has fairly extensive sections on fabrics, types, colors, usages, care, colors. Also, the back has yardage calculator charts which no other book has. Unfortunately, I would not buy this book just for that.
I think if this book were to be published with photos instead of difficult to follow illustrations, it would be a must-have for my sewing library. As it is, I cannot recommend it.
Great Book!.......2006-05-07
I found this book to helpful in several ways. It has detailed sewing instructions along with great sketches and photos. I have made several of the projects and have been happy with all of the results. I am an experienced sewer, but even a novice could follow these instructions. Unlike another reviewer I do not think it is outdated at all. It is filled with classic, traditional treatments as well as some unique ones, --not half brained or trash styles like you find on Trading Spaces. I love this book and am glad to have it in my collection.
The world's leading window decorating authority.......2005-12-15
I really like this book; it is beautifully illustrated and has some equally beautiful photos. I concur with some other comments that "it is not for the beginner." It is an elegant and well put together book.

Life and Humor of Rosie Rules.......2000-03-30
I love Rosie O'donnel, this book made me love her even more. She is such a remarkable women that has overcome so much at such a young age. I have read her people profile and Rosie's true story. This book blows both of them out of the water. A remarkable look into Rosie's triumphs and tragedys. From the death of her mother and the shakie relationship with her father to the adoption of her babies and her raising tons of money to support children's charities. What a wonderful book and wonderful women.

Book Description
The Life And Humor Of Rosie O'Donnell explores how and why she's changed the face of daytime television with her unique brand of kinder, gentler entertainment. Instead of confrontation and sensationalism, she offers guest-friendly, audience-pleasing appeal. Instead of snide comedy, she shares her own enthusiasms with immensely warm and engaging humor. From singing TV theme songs to celebrating her devotion to Tom Cruise to devising a clever revenge against Scope mouthwash (who named her one of America's least kissable people), she's a delightfully different kind of star, one whose irresistible love of show business shines through every day and lights up countless lives.

Don't Read a Book by its Cover.......1999-03-12
Before I even began to read this book I was excited about the cool cover. I started reading and found necessary information, but in a dull format. The author rambled on for too long about little details. An okay book for a person just needing information on Rosie, but if you are a true fan, seek another source.
