Book Description
Like the works of Jodi Picoult and Chris Bohjalian, The Mystery of Breathing explores highly contemporary ethical dilemmas in a page-turning drama. An intense medical thriller, psychologically riveting, The Mystery of Breathing takes readers inside the competitive world of emergency medicine. Maggie Claymore is a brilliant neonatal physician at the top of her game and the height of her career when she falls prey to an anonymous hate note campaign designed to destroy her reputation. Klass, herself a pediatrician, lends firsthand immediacy to the breakneck pace of high-tech medicine and its toll on a dedicated doctor. In her acute portrait of Maggie, Klass "specializes in that space between a rock and a hard place that contemporary women find themselves in" (Seattle Post-Intelligencer).

Don't Bother.......2007-08-04
This book was so bad that I stopped reading it after one chapter ( a rareity for me). I am sure that Perri Klass is an excellent doctor, but she should stick to medicine. The book overall lacked life. It didn't take form in the first couple of pages that are crucial for an author. Maybe it's more of a chick book, but if you are looking for literary substance, skip over this one.
Perhaps a specialized audience, but a great read........2007-07-30
I have always liked Dr. Klass' writing, I work in a children's hospital, and I love mysteries, so this was right up my alley. The ending was somewhat unsatisfactory, but not that difficult to see the end of the road for the villain...In fact, I realized at the end, that it might be less a mystery and more a treatise on the glass ceiling or treatment of professional women even in a profession that is becoming dominated by women.

I bought this book due to the authors well known name. enjoyable
"Whatever happens we are a fixed unit in the great world".......2004-11-19
The Mystery of Breathing works on a number of levels. The novel is unsurpassed as a piece of literary fiction, but it also works as an intellectually astute character study, a riveting thriller, and as an insight into the world of premature babies and the medical professionals who fight to save their lives. Klass peppers her narrative with short, sharp sentences and alternatively jumps between the past and the present; the result is a narrative that has an almost urgent and frenzied quality, fitting perfectly with the concurrent themes of ambition and career.
The main protagonist in the Mystery of Breathing is Maggie Claymore, a leading neonatologist at a busy Boston hospital. She's absolutely committed to her work - she works long hours, and fanatically assists in bringing the smallest and sickest babies back to life. Her loyal husband Dan, who also works as a doctor for the underprivileged, understands her commitment, and generally supports her in her endeavors.
Maggie is organized, disciplined, and reliable - "a neat person who needs her world to be neat." She's also an excellent, compassionate and ambitious practitioner, but she has a tendency to be egotistical, arrogant and "far too wedded to her own arguments." She thinks nothing of berating other doctors and inexperienced medical interns for being hesitant and not knowing enough about their job. The novel opens with her dramatic resuscitation of a premature baby, who teetered on the verge of death until Maggie's skill helps the tiny lungs take a breath. Then, in front of nurses and staff, she chews out a resident for not being more prepared for emergencies.
The same day she gets a malicious and hate-filled letter that vilifies her as being evil and self-satisfied. Soon letters blasting her competence and hinting at her responsibility in the death of a child are posted on walls around the hospital and are being sent to hospital officials. One evening, she returns to her office to find a bedpan full of someone's nasty diarrhea on her desk. Maggie's world of professional security and temerity begins to fall apart as the administrators hire a detective to frantically find the letter writer. But the damage is already done - her co-workers are whispering behind her back, and many of the colleagues start admitting that Maggie - determined to save every baby's life no matter the cost - is far too aggressive in reviving infants who will more than likely end up with brain damage or serious health problems.
Klass juxtaposes Maggie's modern dramas with a look back at her life as a child, and as a teenager where her religiously conservative, unfocussed mother, Annalisa tries to instill a "cramped and pinched life" into Maggie. Good friends who felt sorry for her poor and single state so carefully scrutinized Annalisa. But Maggie is an example of a modern woman who has reinvented herself, her home, her sex life, and her personal relationships. She realizes that she doesn't have to grow up to live the life in which she was raised and that she can pick and choose a life from "the great treasure chamber of the world."
Much of the narrative focuses on Maggie's internal life, and as the smear campaign gets worse, a conflict begins to rage within her. She finds herself asking why she's here and what she's feeling. Maybe her experiences in the neonatal unit will make her a more understanding person, aware of her own vulnerability and of the quirks and turns of fate. The Mystery of Breathing is a finely balanced, subtle novel that says a lot about the costs of career, the revelations of our hidden secrets, and the fear of being exposed. Mike Leonard November 04.
compelling study of paranoia and its ensuing destruction.......2004-08-07
Written by a pediatrician and realistically set in a large, urban teaching hospital, The Mystery of Breathing fully deserves five stars. Dr. Klass takes on an array of issues, arranges them in a masterfully crafted work of fiction, and presents them to the reader to be reckoned with.
The challenges of sexism which face strong women who brave traditionally male dominated careers are no longer news. However, in addition to the day to day, garden variety glass ceilings encountered by even the brightest of women, Klass takes us further into the darkness-- when pathological insecurity and paranoia compell someone to frightening levels of destructive behavior.
The hospital environment also harbors other complex relationships. As a nurse myself, I felt that Klass successfully portrays the complicated interdependence between nurses and physicians. I found her depth of understanding, as well as her clarity of expression as to the nature of this dynamic, very refreshing.
Klass also effectively explores the process by which a very bright child eventually defines her own adult life, but still returns to the comforting familiarity of her roots in the face of overwhelming stress. Specifically, Maggie begins to pray again, and perhaps more genuinely than before, in the wake of her persecution.
Contrary to some of the other reviews, I enjoyed the manner in which the culprit was revealed to the reader, but not to Maggie. And, despite the profound losses suffered by Maggie and her friends, the novel left me with a feeling of hope and possibility. Indeed, the ending allowed for any number of possibilities as to what might happen later. Specifically, I feel certain that, as a result of Donna's work, the culprit will ultimately be discovered when he inevitably begins to harass David Susser. And I also believe that, just as every burden brings a gift, Maggie will revaluate her life and her career, redefining herself once again both personally and professionally. While I see her always as a physician, I imagine her personal relationships, especially with her husband, will strengthen her spirit at work.
Finally, I miss Sarah and Penelope, Peter, Dan, and, most of all, Maggie. Therein lies my true criteria for a five star read!

More Like a Warm Night in Ballymuir.......2005-04-05
I find it hard to really care about prickly Jenna, or her bratty sister, Maureen. The effort to keep Dev's business interest mysterious, just ends up making it uninteresting. Apparently it had something to do with some modern resort or shopping center ruining Ballymuir's charm (and Jenna's restaurant).
I really like reading about Ireland, but the characters put me off enough that I couldn't even enjoy some of the descriptions of the country.
By page 150, I gave up on the story and flipped ahead trying to find the "Hot Night" that was promised. Never did spot it, but I'm sure it's there somewhere hidden in Jenna and Dev's sparring.
Dorien Kelly does it again!.......2004-04-22
HOT NIGHTS takes us back to the town Dorien Kelly created so vividly in LAST BRIDE IN BALLYMUIR, and what a triumphant return it is. This time we share the lives of Jenna, she who has brought Muir House back to life, and Dev, he who could steal away all she's worked so hard to create. Slowly, gently, and believably, these two work their way into each others lives and hearts.
Left me Cold.......2004-04-09
Weary, stale, flat...but apparently profitable. This formulaic second book in Kelly's series leaves one as cold as...well any real night in Ireland would. All there was of depth and promise in the first has fallen sadly short here. With a tiresomely predictable heroine, Jenna, and her inability to leave control of even the smallest detail or greatest pleasure, to the conflicted momma's boy for a hero, Dev, clearly meant to be the Devil, one must wonder what deal the author made that would force such compromise in what could have been a truly rich, deep, and Irish story line. Where "Last Bride" excited and inspired, "Hot Nights" , just makes the reader cringe in embarrassment for its author, and wonder if the third book, if there is one coming, will be worth the time to read it, or better thrown in the fire to try to generate the heat this book lacks.
Sparks flying.......2004-03-11
Sparks fly from more than bonfires in Ballymuir. Jenna Fahey fled her American family and worked to build a crumbling Irish manor into a fine restaurant. Dev Gilvane buried his Irish roots under finely tailored suits. Dev's after Jenna's home and after her heart. Jenna's after soaking his ambitions with the same determination she used to plunge his cell phone into her lobster tank.
Engaging relationship drama.......2004-03-03
Chicago blue blood Jenna Fahey relocated and opened up a restaurant in Ballymuir, Ireland in the historic Muir House that she hopes to own one day. After two years there renovating the place while serving meals, Jenny worries because London realtor Devlin Gilvane has arrived in town with plans for Muir House.
Jenna needs an infusion of fast cash to buy Muir House before her rival does. Worse she feels attracted to the one person who could destroy her dream as he has the loot to make a bid for Muir House. However, though business wise he knows he should tender the proposal, his feelings for Jenna keeps him from completing his assignment.
Anyone who peruses the opening line will be hooked to read this tale, the previous one (see THE LAST BRIDE IN BALLYMUIR), and the upcoming tale (hopefully starring the sister of the first novel's hero). The story line lives up to the fabulous opening as the audience obtains a fine contemporary romance starring two likable lead characters. The support cast is solid, but Jenna and Dev make the tale as their goals place them in opposition to the desires of their respective hearts.

Book Description
There are more than four hundred sagas aboard the Starship Enterprise, one for each of the unique men and women serving under the command of Capt. James T. Kirk. For years their personal adventures, their individual struggles and successes, have gone largely untold...until now.
The U.S.S. Enterprise is patrolling the Klingon border when sensors detect a massive power source on a planet supposedly populated only by a race of primitive humanoids. Suspecting some sort of Klingon plot, Captain Kirk decides to investigate the matter personally, beaming down to the planet with Dr. McCoy and a team of security officers.
But Kirk is in more danger than he knows. Among the landing party is Lt. Jon Anderson, a Klingon infiltrator on an undercover mission aboard the Enterprise. Anderson does not know if the Empire is at work on the unnamed planet, but if it is, then his duty demands that Kirk be stopped -- by all means necessary.

A bit of a disappointment........2003-08-16
This is a reasonably good novel, but not nearly as good as the first of the series. For one thing, it is less able to stand on its own merit without reading the rest of the series than the first was; for another, the writing/editing was sloppier. There are a few of the typical mass-market paperback errors, which I don't remember seeing in the first book, things like saying "seceded" when "succeeded" was intended, or "face" instead of "fact". Also, there is one place where Kell is referred to by his brother Karel's name, and one where Karel is referred to as Kell. These are minor quibbles, but still annoying, and when added to the fact that the book suffers from a mild case of "middle-book-itis", the bane of second books in trilogies, it keeps it from being rated quite so highly as the first. Still, it is an enjoyable read, and the characterization, plot, dialogue, and pacing are all quite good.
and again..........2003-01-16
Mr. Ryan has continued his fine saga in this book. A very good read, and if you're a hardcore Trek fan (and I can't stress this enough) the entire series is a MUST READ. Mr. Ryan masterfully ties in many stories from many original series episodes and characters. Trek fans always love a familiar reference, and Mr. Ryan passes out plenty. But more importanly, they're neatly giftwrapped in an extremely well-written book and finely crafted story lines.
Let The Mayhem Begin.......2002-10-25
The second book in this trilogy is even more action packed than book one, with more exciting battles and heroic deeds, but the cracks also begin to show. While the continuity with the first book is maintained there are more technical and historical flaws in this work which to me weakens the plot slightly (*that's the trouble when you are an obsessed, nit-picking fan like me !!!). The Star Trek regulars are present but only Kirk and Spock make any significant contribution to the story, and there are fewer references to the original series events. The main character "Kell", is starting to lose his appeal which I suspect is to set up his end in the last book. It is ironic that as he becomes more "human" he becomes less interesting !!! However the thing that bothers me about this novel is the breakdown of logical storytelling elements, as this suggests the plot is being stretched too far. I have however rated this book the same as book one because although the first one had a more solid story base, this one pumps up the action to an even higher level. So if you're into Star Trek that gets the old pulse racing, this one is for you !!!
The Blade of Bat'leth.......2002-09-25
Disguised through surgery as a human Starfleet security officer on board USS ENTERPRISE, Kell maintains the secrecy of his true Klingon nature. However, he is conflicted about his covert mission. Captain James T. Kirk has long been a foe of the Klingon Empire, marked for death on more than one occasion, yet somehow surviving through-what the Klingon Empire has insisted-cowardly ways. During his tenure aboard ENTERPRISE, though, Kell has found the abrasive young captain to be anything but cowardly. In fact, Kirk embodies the teachings of honor of Kahless the Warrior. Striking such a man down from behind, as the Klingon Empire has charged Kell to do, would be a supreme act of cowardice and leave the young Klingon warrior bereft of honor himself. In addition to the unsettling realization about Kirk, Kell has also fallen in love with Leslie Parrish, a human security officer also assigned to ENTERPRISE. Kell's friendship with Benitez, another starship security officer, also pulls at him. Even as he's struggling with what he's supposed to do, Kell goes on a mission that reveals some of the underhanded play the Klingon Empire has been promoting. Meanwhile, on the Klingon battle cruiser D'K TAHG, Kell's brother Karel has his own problems with promoting from within and getting caught up in a major bid for captaincy aboardship. Back on Earth, Lieutenant West pursues his research for some way to settle the coming war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, a war which all resources say the Federation may well lose and that will definitely see a huge number of losses.
Kevin Ryan had co-authored two Star Trek novels before the ERRAND OF VENGEANCE trilogy for the original Star Trek series. In addition, he was an editor on the line for a number of years. Next year will see the publication of two ROSWELL novels he has authored.
With a sure hand and a deep working knowledge of the Star Trek universe(s), Kevin Ryan has skillfully engineered another Star Trek novel that will keep readers glued to the pages. The overall punch of the ERRAND OF VENGEANCE trilogy is awesome, combining the history of the Klingons tightly interwoven with the Star Trek history diehard fans are so familiar with. The pacing of the novel, like the previous one, feels very much like an episode of the television series, never dwelling too long on any one character or situation, then moving on quickly to another set of characters. Ryan also manages to pull off a romance that is realistic and touching, yet never slow the pace of the stories that he's unfolding. His actions scenes are real grabbers, reaching out and pulling the readers into the battle. The bar fight was great and set up the tragedy at the end very well.
The only things that jarred in this novel were the remembrances of Lieutenant Justman (Admiral Justman) that happened in the past. Those sequences kept running through on-going action encountered by the other characters. Perhaps if they had been framed differently, or if a header had been placed in the text to warn the reader of the impending time jump, they would have gone more smoothly. Still, the scenes and story were interesting and showed more history of the Klingon interaction with the Federation as well as Justman's own motivation.
As the second novel in the ERRAND OF VENGEANCE trilogy, KILLING BLOW doesn't stand on its own. It shouldn't. The novel is a piece of an intricate whole that is a mesmerizing tale. Editor John Ordover's vision in creating Star Trek TOS novels that weave new tales through the known mythos from the eyes of regular crewmen rather the more traditional viewpoints of the stars is a grand experiment that is succeeding. The concept brings freshness to the series that is fun and plays fast and loose because anything can happen-and probably will-to the primary characters outside of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. Anyone looking for a really well done Star Trek trilogy or well-done space opera in general should put these three novels on the required reading list.
ST-TOS: Killing Blow: Errand of Vengeance.......2002-09-17
Star Trek-The Original Series, Killing Blow: Errand of Vengeance written by Kevin Ryan is the second installment of a trilogy called the "Errand of Vengeance." This is a Klingon story, but what a "Klingon Story" indeed, one filled with a plot to kill Captain Jasmes T. Kirk.
This book is filled with action and below decks workings of the crew of the Enterprise as they prepare to set things right in the STAR TREK UNIVERSE. As from the first book in the trilogy, "The Edge of the Sword," we found out about the plot to kill Captain Kirk and the inflitration of security on the Enterprise by cosmetically changed Klingons. If this wasn't enough we also learned of a Klingon plan to start a war with the Federation. To accomplish this, the Klingons needed starship grade dilithium crystals to power the ships for the invasion, thus a mining operation commenced on the thrid planet in System 7348, even though in has a pre-warp civilization of humanoids, which is close to the Klingon-Federation boarder.
Of course, Kirk and company is now sent to investigate and as suspected the Orions are doing the Klingon Empires bidding here and mining the dilithium crystals and shaking the planet in doing so. But remember, Kell (the Klingon) posing as Jon Anderson, sent to kill Kirk and who worked in Klingon intelligence, still has a mission to accomplish.
With all of the twists, turns, convolutions and surprises found in this book... well you get the picture... you are engrossed in the story to find out what happens next. Keven Ryan writes a compelling and artful story that keeps your interest.
I found that most, not all, but most second books are not as good as the first and third of the trilogy... well... I was pleasently, bolt out of the blue, surprised, as this book, not only carried the story well, but brought us along to want to read the third book.
If you like Klingon stories... this is your cup of "Bloodwine." Filled with intrigue, treachery, debauchery, deception, mystery along with Kahless's honor and truth as a well written story telling the tale well.
In the meantime... live long and prosper... see you in book three of the trilogy "River of Blood."
Book Description
This groundbreaking book introduces an entirely new form of yoga, Mindfulness Yoga, which seamlessly integrates the Buddha's teachings on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness with traditional asana yoga practice. Mindfulness Yoga emphasizes the spiritual side of yoga practice, an aspect often overlooked in a culture that tends to fixate solely on the physical benefits of yoga. Unlike any other Buddhism-meets-yoga book, Mindfulness Yoga presents the two disciplines as a single practice that brings health to the body and liberates the mind and spirit, awakening compassion and fostering equanimity and joy. Author Frank Jude Boccio offers a superb and lively introduction to the Buddha's teachings and locates them within the larger context of the Indian spiritual traditions, then offers three complete Mindfulness Yoga sequences, including over 100 pictures, with detailed guidance for body, breath, and mind. Special lay-flat binding makes this book even more useful as a practice aid.

Mindfulness Yoga:.......2004-04-11
I still consider myself a newcomer to yoga, having practiced semi-regularly for 3 years. Frank Jude Boccio's book, Mindfulness Yoga helped me make the distinctions between yoga practice and its origins and Buddhist traditions which heretofore I had lumped together in my Western mind as "same." He then goes on to demonstrate how the two cultural traditions intersect and work together in harmony for both meditation and asana practice. Boccio manages to give us the "Cliff Notes" explanation that is concise and clear and provides the reader with a basic overview of the historical and philosophical tenets of Buddhist teachings and how they relate to yoga practice. He also offers an easy and thorough introduction to meditation practice. The last section includes a series of asana sequences to practice which are thoroughly and imaginatively explicated. Mindfulness Yoga is chock full of information tempered with personal antecdotes and practical examples that make the material accessible and help us understand how to bring the Practice into all facets of daily living. His engaging writing style is informative and at times funny and lighthearted (Car Alarm Dharma, for example). I would recommend this book to anyone who's starting yoga or is a current practictioner and wants to understand more deeply the philosophical/spiritual aspect of the practice as well as the Sanskrit and Buddhist terminology.
Frank's Book.......2004-03-25
I am a student of Frank Jude Boccio's at Jai Ma Yoga Center in New Paltz, NY so I guess I am slightly biased . . . However, if you aren't lucky enough to have Frank as a teacher, pick up this book and you will feel as though he is there with you. The teachings in this book expand beyond the Western notion of what "yoga" is (that is, a way to lose weight, etc) and really get to the heart of the teachings. The writing is clear and concise and personal--you can really identify with the things Frank writes about. And for anyone who wants an understanding of Buddhism, and how Buddhism and yoga can go hand in hand, this is the book for you. I highly recommend it. Om Shanti.

Tastes healthy too!.......2005-12-01
I have tried several recipes out of this book and have decided that I can do better. Some of the recipes are average and some are almost inedible. True, they do seem rather healthy and I have lost weight trying the recipes, but it is probably because I'm not eating much!
A wonderful book.......2003-02-01
I picked this cookbook up after spending sometime trying recipes from Carol Heding Munson's crock pot book, "Smart Crockery cooking." My experience with that book was so wonderful, every recipe was absolutely delicious. When I saw "Smart Pressure Cooker Recipes," I decided to pick this book up strictly on my experience with the crock pot book.
The recipes are generally one page long, a few go on to a second page. The book is well edited so it's very readable and well laid out.
Again, so far every recipe I've tried has been delicious. If you want to buy only one pressure cooker cook book, this is the one.
Happy cooking
Great all around cookbook.......2002-11-12
After flipping through many books at the bookstore, I thought this one looked the best. I really like it! The meals are practical (normal ingredients and standard prep times) and they taste very good. Its seems to be getting harder to find cookbooks that have easy to find ingredients and don't take forever to prepare. This book is worth its price.
Quick meals, fun meals, good eating........2000-03-29
I definitely enjoyed this book -- whether just reading the recipes or cooking them. Simple plain meals, along with fancy meals -- it's all here. Tasty and quick, fresh and healthy. I review the recipes and use foods I already have on hand. Everything comes out great. A p.c. cookbook must!

decent book...except for one thing.......2006-01-13
Jim Lehrer, a reporter who was in Dallas on 11/22/63, maintains that Secret Service SAIC of the Dallas office Forrest V. Sorrels ordered the bubbletop off JFK's limo and had regrets about it. Regrets aside, that decision was actually made by Secret Service agent Samuel A. Kinney (I spoke to both Sorrels and Kinney). That said, a decent book; worth a look.
