Book Description

"Open the pages, and out comes a whiff of brimstone, as The Oracle Glass transports you to the Paris of kings and witches, on a guided tour of corruption, love, and sorcery."
--Diana Gabaldon
Seventeenth-century Paris. Geneviève is a skinny, precocious girl with a mind full of philosophy and the remarkable power to read the swirling waters of an oracle glass. Left for dead by her family, she is taken in by the ingenious occultist La Voisin, who rules a secret society of witches that manipulates the rich and the scandalous all the way up to the throne. Tutored by La Voisin, Geneviève creates a new identity for herself--as the mysterious Madame de Morville, rumored to be one hundred fifty years old.
Soon, even the reigning mistress of the Sun King himself consults Madame de Morville on what the future holds for her. And as Madame de Morville, Geneviève can revel in what women are usually denied--power, an independent income, and the opportunity to speak her mind. But beneath her intelligence and wit, and in the face of unexpected love, Geneviève is driven by the obsessed spirit of revenge....
"INTELLIGENT, WITTY AND ELEGANTLY WRITTEN."
--San Francisco Chronicle
"Judith Merkle Riley's novels are small jewels, smooth and polished, glowing with a light all their own....Merkle Riley has her own oracle glass--and she uses it to see as vividly into the past as her Geneviève sees into the future."
--Detroit Free Press
"Enlightening, enticing...The author's own alchemical skill is fully evident here as dashes of black magic and sorcery are added to spice the lively plot. Liberal sprinklings of wry wit and mordant humor help keep the narrative cauldron bubbling."
--The Cleveland Plain Dealer

5 out of 5 stars History leaps off the page.......2007-10-07

This was one of those delicious novels that drew me entirely into its world, that was so vivid I could smell said world's smells and taste its tastes. I wanted to devour this novel and yet I never wanted it to end because it was so wonderfully drawn. It is exactly what I seek whenever I pick up a book: transportation to another time and place.

Riley does an amazing job of taking a slice of history and making it real. Textbooks do history a disservice by boiling it down to facts and dates and it is authors like Riley who remind us of the romance, intrigue, and fascination of the past. Though she inserts fictional characters into factual events, she presents the reader with a very rich and detailed picture of Paris in the 1600s. The intrigues and rivalries and crimes of the day rival anything that has happened in modern history and serve to remind us of the danger of burnishing history and turning it into "the good old days".

The story is equal parts historical reenactment, a tale of the triumph of overcoming adverse circumstances through courage and brains, and a touching and satisfying romance.

Genviève is a wonderful and very human character. She is sympathetic and yet, at times, the reader will want to reach into the page and give her a good shake. The perfection of the character rests in the fact that she is not perfect. Though she has a good heart, she does bad and stupid things and possesses the very human flaw of following her heart rather than her head.

I am very glad that I have another Riley novel to turn to now that I've finished this one, so skillful, interesting, and wonderful is Riley's writing.

5 out of 5 stars My all time favorite!.......2007-07-14

This book is my all time favorite book. And as much as I can't wait till the last Harry Potter book comes out, this is the one book I will read at least once a year!

5 out of 5 stars Smoke and Mirrors and plenty of historical detail.......2007-07-14

If you've studied anything about the court and life of the Sun King, Louis XIV, one of the oddest things was that despite the hold that the Catholic Church had on the lives and minds of the people, there was a court case that's baffling to modern minds.

This was the Affaire des Poisions.

Turns out that the King's official mistress (read good-time-girl) Madame de la Marquise de Montespan was visiting a business woman in Paris by the name of Catherine Voison, who happened to be a witch. La Voison sold potions, arranged for abortions, and arranged for someone to die now and then. Turns out she had an entire bevy of conspirators who were telling fortunes, selling spells and wreaking havoc, all within the ties of a secret society.

In this world, the author sets the tale of one Genevieve. Small, dark, born with a twisted spine and a limp, and far too clever for her own good, Genevieve reads, daydreams over young men that would never give her a second look, and remains the apple of her adoring papa's eye.

And like Cinderella, she has a stepmother and sister, and that's where the similarity ends with the fairy tale. For Genevieve is much too clever to believe in magic, but then, Cinderella didn't end up in the Seine one night either...

And Catherine Voison is the most unlikely of fairy godmothers too. Genevieve accepts her offer when she's suddenly orphaned and forced to live on her wits. Together they work a fraud that sets all Paris abuzz and even the King might take notice of a fortune-teller whose forecasts are uncannily accurate.

But several gentlemen are not so easily fooled, among them Desgrez, the chief of the Paris police.

I'm going to stop here. It's too good of a read to pass up, and I don't want to spoil this one. Curl up with a cat, and while away a few hours enjoying this one.

If you're further piqued by the dazzling Sun-king and his court, I recommend finding a used bookstore and scaring up the Angelique novels, which are even better than this one, and classics in their own right.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Setting and Characters, fans of Philippa Gregory take note!.......2007-02-13

I admit that I'm a sucker for a historical novel with a deep sense of time and place, where the history is more than "wallpaper" and the characters do not have 21st century sensibilities dressed in farthingales or knee breeches. If the main character in such a book is a woman navigating the obstacles of her time period, so much the better.

The Oracle Glass has all of that and more. It is the story of Genevieve Pasquiers, a very intelligent teenage girl who is left for dead by her scheming family, and adopted by a different type of scheming family, a company of women who are either witches, business women or both. This family is headed by La Voison, a real historical personage whose reign over the Parisian demimonde coincided with that of the Sun King, Louis XIV. La Voison sees the potential in young Genvieve, who has the ability to read the future on the surface of water. The first half of the book, in which Genevieve grows to the age of 15, stumbles innocently into the intrigues of her family, is cast out and then brought into La Voison's operations and made over into a sophisticated century-old crone with mystical powers, is riveting reading. I was rooting for Genevieve the entire way and enjoyed her rise to power. And lurking in the background are the shadowy and frightening figures of the Parisian police investigators, who bode no good for Genevieve or her compatriots if the extent of their schemes ever come to light.

Unfortunately the book does sag somewhat in the second half. The plot that roars along through the first half, stalls, even as Genevieve's situation begins to go downhill. While the last 75 pages or so pick back up again and the book steams to a conclusion, the slow and repetitive plot made several hundred pages a bit harder to read.

Still, the history and intrigue of a time I am less familiar with than the more usual British historical settings kept me going. I was grateful for the cast of characters listed in the beginning of the book--I needed it to keep all the court schemers straight! Like another favorite historical author, Philippa Gregory, Judith Merkle Riley builds her story around a female figure with the intelligence and nerve to build a degree of power and independence in a time that wasn't very friendly to women. Like Gregory, this character is a sharp observer at a key period of history, on the fringe of the interactions between great historical figures and in constant danger of being overrun by them. Even with the plot difficulties in the middle of the novel, this makes for a compelling and interesting read. This was my first book by Riley but it will definitely not be my last.

5 out of 5 stars Absorbing read.......2007-01-15

I really enjoyed this book. The history of the period during Louis XIV reign in France and the Occult goings on was fascinating.
The author did a good job of bringing fact and fiction together with the characters and it kept the reader very intrigued to the very end of the story. I highly recommend it and look forward to reading all of Judith Merkle Riley's books!

The second of a series of books from this particular publisher, this contains three longer stories, including the novel length Hour of the Dragon. Here you have The People of the Black Circle, The Hour of the Dragon, and A Witch Shall be Born:

Bloody Crown of Conan : The People of the Black Circle - Robert E. Howard
Bloody Crown of Conan : The Hour of the Dragon - Robert E. Howard
Bloody Crown of Conan : A Witch Shall be Born - Robert E. Howard

Conan is again in a leadership position, and seven of his lieutenants have been captured and are under sentence of death. He goes to see what he can do about it. In a flash, he makes off with their leader, the Devi. She is not all he has to worry about, as spies, plots and the wizardry of the Black Seers will all hinder him, not to mention the odd small army, along with the Devi herself.

The novel length Conan work. An aging Conan is now in a position of responsibility, being King of Aquilonia.

His reign is threatened by a very powerful sorcerer, whom Conan is unable to stop by mundane means, and must take himself off hunting for a mystic artifact.

Having done this, there is some wizard smiting to be done.

Top notch work.

A bad problem to have - how do you tell which of two women is the very evil twin. Luckily, our favorite barbarian is a very pragmatic man. Excellent and evocative, this story.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Robert E. Howard.......2007-04-13

When these stories were published Conan and his world had developed fully over many stories, and the Hyborean age and its political structures had become intricate and vast. From the plotting of Yasmina in "The People of the Black Circle" to the entertwining plot and subplots of "A Witch Shall Be Born," dark intrigue and the moves and countermoves of individuals and factions are central themes. "The Hour of the Dragon" is an especially impressive work, both in imagination and sharacter developement as well as the fact that it is the only full length Conan novel written by Conan's creator. The "Utitled Draft" on Page 315 is a particularly interesting read, in which Howard gets somewhat more graphic than usual. But the character developement in this particular "unfinished" piece is exemplar, and the story is unique among the three books in this series in that it's the only one that doesn't star or at least co-star. In fact Conan is only mentioned as the protagonists campanion in the past, and the famous barbarian does not appear in an actual "scene" until the last page of the story.

Howard was one of the earliest writers in the fantasy genre, and probably the inventor of its "sword and sorcery" sub-genre, and this is an important tomb for any fan of fantasy.

I have all three in this series, and after having to sift through so much Robert Jordon, L. Sprague D. Camp, and other fanfiction writers and being dissatisfied with previous compilation editions that tried to edit Howard into chronological order, I am glad to now have an original Robert E. Howard compilation in the order that the stories were written. The caliber of the work contained inside these books is jaw-dropping. Not only was howard incredibly imaginative and skilled impressively in submersing the reader's attention, but he also seems to have had an uncanny knowledge of certain things about man's prehistoric past that we are only discovering now to be true in the realm of archeology and science. The only problem with this series is that Del Rey skimped big-time on the glue.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal...Accept No Substitutes.......2007-02-16

After years of Howard's Conan "canon" that was rewritten, bastardized and embellished by other hack writers, the real, original Howard texts have been restored and they are indeed a revelation. Howard's writing is rich and evocative. You imagine the barbaric past vividly. If your only exposure to Conan is the watered-down movie version, you owe it to yourself to go back to the source of it all, the real Conan, the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars Genius.......2006-06-26

Nothing in the Conan saga that is written by anyone else compares to Howard's masterwork. While the pulp novels by a slew of Conan writers to come after Howard are enjoyable to read, the original stories are far and away the best. It's interesting to see how much of Conan's personality and other aspects of the character were left out by later writers, whether by lack of understanding or lack of skill. Conan as a beserk warrior appears more readily in the original works than in later stories by other authors. And Conan at his most berserk, with the mighty pen of Robert E. Howard guiding his sword, is simply riveting.

      2 out of 5 stars A bit mundane.......2007-09-02

This was certainly not one of the better Authority stories. The art was about as good as any other average Authority graphic novel, but the story was really unimaginative.

The bad guys were not moving and contained no really original powers. The story of Jenny Spark's twin sister was really lame. All of the predicaments the team found themselves in were solved way to easily and with nothing short of brute force.

Overall, I was really disappointed with this story line. On a more positive note, it seems to me that The Authority: Revolution was much more inspired.

4 out of 5 stars Two Stories and a Short.......2005-07-29

This is an interesting collection. Like most of the previous volumes there are two long stories (four issues each). This also contains a nice short story at the end. When I first read it I was rather perturbed to find out that between the two stories was a mini series that should be read before reading the second story.

The first story has the Authority going up against the leader of a new religion that is spreading around the globe like wildfire.

After a short notice telling us to look for the Coup D'Etat mini series that should come next, we have the post Coup story where apparently Jenny Quantum's mother is suing for rights to Jenny. Right at the same time massive ruptures into the Bleed occur all over the world.

Finally we have an almost touching tale where Jack Hawksmoor takes on a small murder case that has some personal meaning for him.

For fans of The Authority, these are good stories. No one should be surprised that violence and anarchy are the dish of the day. After all, the group was founded by government-hating Jenny Sparks. If you like the series you should have no complaints with these stories but if you don't, you will.

2 out of 5 stars Rehash and uninspired art.......2005-07-25

This most recent Authority tpb is a bit of a disappointment. The first story about the Authority fighting a new religion is a poor use of the concept of the team, kind of a "they've faced government, now they'll face religion" cliche. The second story about Jenny Quantum's twin rehashes Transfer of Power's "what if there was a moral opposite of the Authority" plotline. Also, dwayne and portaccio just aren't great pencillers. Buy the other collections, but this one you can pass up.

Comparing the New Testament with the Tao Te Ching, Taoism’s most sacred book, Jesus and Lao Tzu reveals a surprising set of examples in which these two spiritual masters point their followers in the same direction. With over 90 parallel sayings, readers find fresh understanding and new perspectives here, since the time-honored teachings are presented side by side. The book also shows how these shared truths transcend traditional religious boundaries.

3 out of 5 stars Not so sure..........2006-01-06

Not so sure about the comparisons made (Jesus - Lao Ze) on opposing pages. Interesting, though.

5 out of 5 stars DIFFERENT AND INSIGHTFUL.......2003-05-29

I strongly recommend this book to those who are interested in
or involved with Christian, Jewish, and/or Tao outlooks.

The author and editor take the position that Jesus and Lao Tzu
represented 2 separate philosophical disciplines that branched
from the same originating river (GOD). This is,to my way of
thinking, quite extraordinary, considering the vast differences
of East and West histories and cultures, and communication.

It's too bad that this book is not in more people's hands

(and lives!). You get 3 basic things from the book:

      1) An excellent overview of Jesus' and Lao Tzu's teachings,
and how they relected on each others', as presented
      in the preface.

      2) A breakdown of all the teachings into 9 catagories;
1 catagory per chapter. Each chapter comprises many paired
quotes from each teacher; you be the judge to just how similar
      they are to each other.

      3) A Commentary section following the 9 chapters/topics
that is well worth having all by itself. Tremendous insight,
backed up by the referred to precious chapters.

If all the above isn't enough, and it is, the binding
ends with a fine list of recommended books for furthur
      study.

Again, if you are a serious Jew, Christian or Taoist
(or seeker of deeper meaning in life) I think you should
have this as one of your key reference books.

P.S. Jesus' sayings in the book are just Jesus' sayings
alone, not mixed up with what disciples and clergy added
to the Gospel from their vantage points.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Series So Far.......2002-06-24

The 3rd book in the "Parallel Sayings" series tackles the greatest differences yet between 2 religious 'founders': Lao Tzu, the enigmatic hermit who preached to no one and actually wrote his own legacy (Tao Te Ching) at a gatekeeper's request before disappearing from society and Jesus, whose parables of love and social reform were recorded in the Gospels and have converted about 1/3 of the world's poplulation 2 millenia later.

This book deviates from the first two by including short commentiaries on each of the parallel sayings in the back of the book. The commentaries add something and I think that including, at the very least, historical backround and some additional context for the sayings gives some perspective which will hopefully be adopted in later books.
      Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Helps understanding between Taoism and Christianity.......2002-05-06

Of corse all Taoists in America and Europe are influanced or affected by Christianity... it is woven into the fabric of our society. This is why is is good for a Taoist to read this book. It will bring him/her some "comfort" with regard to Christianity, and help them to understand the nature of Jesus, thus, understand more about their Christian neighbor.

"Liberal" Christians will probably enjoy this book as well... and may even begin to regard Lao Tzu as a bit of a prophet :)
I would recomend it as a gift from Taoist to Chrisian or Christian to Taoist.... NOT as a "conversion" tool, but as a tool for mutual understanding.

Although I enjoyed seeing the parallels... I thought that some of the sayings did not really match very well as far as their actual meanings, also I was suprised by some of the verses that were *not* included... there are some better verses that show the simular intents of Lau Tzu and Jesus than some of the ones chosen by the Author.
One might do better to read the Tao Te Ching and the "words in red" of the new testiment for his/herself! However, if you can't be bothered to do that, this book is a nice quick referance and a nice teaching tool.

I wish there was a Lao Tzu and Muhammad book.. I'd like to see what would be made of that! :)

4 out of 5 stars Fun and interesting parable book.......2001-02-03

This book is loaded with thought-provoking parables of life that could interest people of any religion. These life parables are universal and quite entertaining. Definitely not a heavy read --easy to pick up and set down anytime. One page has a sentence from Jesus and the opposite page has Lao Tzu's version. Seems good for teaching.

        5 out of 5 stars A very good book!.......2000-04-06

Last year, I asked my friend Katty, who lives in the United States to order this book for me (I still have some problems to order from here). The matter is that I was not actually sure if it would be a good book. Now, I do not repent having bought it. It is a very good book, all recipes have a beautiful photo, and you can find basic recipes in it: layer, fruit cake, glacé, frostings, and more. Explanations are very clear too. Be sure you will find many creative ideas here. Buy it!

3 out of 5 stars Bottom line: It's the only game in town!.......2006-09-24

I got this massive work at a used book store. I traded practically an SUV full of books for credit and this is what I got. Why should you care about that fact? The reason I explain this is because this is pretty much the only way I ever would have wound up with a copy. The book is like a lot of Schiffer books; ongodly expensive.
Now, that being said, there is next to nothing on the US Army in WW1. There was a small collector's guide in the 80s, and now this. I don't think anyone's even tried a book like this before, and for that alone, I highly praise the author for taking it on.
I do, however, have issues with it. The author makes some pretty poor statements, showing some very bad research (such as the modern Army only issuing dress blue uniforms to "specialty" troops. It will soon be the ONLY dress uniform the Army has, for everyone). Once he gets into his topic, though, I found very few errors.
He does an admirable job of going through other people's collections to get photos of surviving items. Good job, there. But the quality of photography is extremely poor in many cases, and I'd guess he took some of the photos with his "point and click" camera. The flash photography is THAT bad in some places.
And I find it very odd that many of the "re-enacting" shots (and there are a great deal of these) aren't marked as such. But I'd guess anyone buying this book would know those photos aren't original. I must ask one thing of anyone thinking of writing such a book of their own:
PLEASE, for the love of all that is holy, don't put yourself in photos in your own book!
There are a curious number of lapses in some items. Not an original "trench" shotgun is shown in the book? C'mon, he can find over a dozen original boots, but not an original WW1 trench shotgun? I know several collectors (myself included) who have them in their gun safes!
I must give the author credit also for leaving out the exceptions for the most part. Far too often, people want to include the "cool" stuff that ha sno bearing on the topic. The author here pretty much avoids that trap.
In the end, I want it known that I did not feel cheated by getting this work. The author did a fine (yet mildly self-serving) job. For me the bottom line is this; Can I find a better work than this? NO, I can't. For that reason, and that reason chiefly, I now have it in my bookshelf.
If you're really into WW1 American stuff, you should have this right beside Canfield's book on WW1 weapons.

Although the book is very basic there is still a lot to learn, and most of the time simple solutions for big problems (in the eyes of the modeler). Those simple solutions are easy to follow, with great results. After some practical sessions you never forget what you learned.

5 out of 5 stars Best for the 'True' Beginner.......2004-01-17

Right off the bat, let me state unequivically: This is a very good book. Maybe the best so far. It is certainly the clearest only because it contains all the important stuff. And THEREIN LIES the problem: The important stuff will be mumbo-jumbo to those who have no idea what the Black-hat Tantric Buddhism teaching is all about.

It might be fair to make this parallel: You're gonna have to know some math (maybe a lot) to really understand Einstein's theory of relativity. By "understand," I mean, the whole cosmological implication and assumption embedded in that theory. It would be unfair to pass judgment on E's theory one way or the other without such an understanding. One can either accept it provisionally until such an understanding becomes possible, or, one passes it up for something that makes more sense right now. In other words, take it (and study it so you can see it or even knock it) or leave it.

This book is completely based on Master Lin Yun's condensation of BTB Feng Shui, and one must either take it or leave it, unfortunately. Why? Because one needs to know where BTB is coming from, of what vast amount of various traditions it is an amalgamation, and most importantly, the core of BTB that is beyond the reach of all and any trappings of tradition, as such. It is this last element -- the freedom of movement and free association -- that makes BTB what it is and what it was: a powerful shortcut to "certain things" by way of rockclimbing (hence its dangerousness), as opposed to a long walk along the hiking trail of spiritual ascent.

This book is not out to convince. Nor is it intended to serve as a book of formulas, although this book also has some very valuable instructions regarding certain rituals.

Take it as a very reliable transcription of some of Master Lin Yun's lectures. But one must have a working vocabulary of the spiritual traditions that constitute the vessel of knowledge that is the BTB to really understand what is being said in this book. One could rely on "faith" but that is not a good idea in the long run, as Lin Yun himself will tell you. The aim of BTB Feng Shui is understanding (of what -- you figure it out), not belief.

All good things are good, and always open, but only to those who WANT to experience it. This book is for the 'True Beginner': The one who is always beginning to take the next step toward an understanding, no matter how far along the path s/he has come already. SVAHA!

3 out of 5 stars Not for the Feng Shui Beginner.......2001-08-17

This book takes the reader beyond standard Feng Shui into Black Sect Feng Shui, which tends to use the Feng Shui concepts in a looser manner than traditional Feng Shui. If you're interested in internalizing Feng Shui as a lifestyle and spiritual undertaking, this book is good. If you want to know how to organize your home or office to improve balance and organization using Feng Shui concepts, and to see good examples, there are better books out there.

5 out of 5 stars A simple yet profound, guidebook of Feng Shui knowledge........1999-04-13

5 out of 5 stars A masters penning, precise in detail, with good pedagogy........1998-07-29

To Houdini, Doyle was a good fellow who was often fooled and would be fooled again. To Doyle, Houdini was a remarkable man concealing the light of great mediumistic gifts under the bushel of gold he received for his performances as an illusionist. Both men were children of inspiration. Houdini was illiterate, but had the genius of character and imagination. Doyle, author and dreamer, had culture and perception. This book sheds light upon two of the most fascinating men of the times.
