Ramchand, a shop assistant in Sevak Sari House in Amritsar, spends his days patiently showing yards of fabric to the women of "status families" and to the giggling girls who dream of dressing up in silk but can only afford cotton.
When Ramchand is sent to a new part of the city to show wares to a wealthy family preparing for their daughter's wedding, he is jolted out of the rhythm of his narrow daily life. His glimpse into a different world gives him an urgent sense of possibility. He begins to see himself, his life, and his future more clearly. And so he attempts to recapture the hope that his childhood had promised, arming himself with two battered English grammar books, a fresh pair of socks, and a bar of Lifebuoy soap. But soon these efforts turn his life upside down, bringing him face to face with the cruelties on which his very existence depends.

A New Voice To Be Heard.......2006-07-12
There are, apparently, an endless supply of narratives portraying the class inequalities in contemporary Indian life. Few of them have made it into the hands of western english readers. It is a treat that this one has overcome the narrowness of western ethnocentricity to give us an insight into the world of modern Indian culture.
Rupa Bajwa opens the window for us to see the world she was born and raised in. While not biographical, it is still first hand. We see a world of rich, deep culture. But a culture, to the western mindset, of indescribable inequality without recourse to true justice. We witness a society at the crossroads of modernity and inescapable prejudice.
It is not, at its core, a sad or tragic story. Neither is it a story inciting change to the established order. But it is an insight into the complex nature of the Indian psyche that must be unraveled and attempts made to resolve it before this nation can join the club of first world nations.
This is Bajwa's first novel. Her newness is obvious, even to the unskilled. But that is not a criticism per se. Her imagination, vulnerability, and even her weaknesses are cause to want to read on to the end. It is because she is not yet refined that the reader extends her grace and continues on to learn what she has to say and see where her characters go.
I applaud this first effort and hope she will give us further enrichment into her world and opportunity to watch her mature into a major force in literature.
rich and poor in India.......2006-05-23
This novel gives a strong portrayal of the vast inequities between the entitled rich and the poor, working class in India, but beyond that the plot is very loose and unwieldy. It is really just an account of a few months in the life of a sari shop salesperson and the people he meets and the experiences that befall him. Some of the things that happen - like he winds up unknowingly being the model for a character in a book - make me wonder if they were ever intended to have more significance later on in the story - something to tie all the experiences together in the end. But this never happens, and the tale ends as randomly as it begins. I wasn't left wanting more, but it felt like something was missing.
Important first novel.......2005-10-11
Sari Shop is a thoughtful, earnest and unusually straightforward depiction of the Delhi life among the working poor. The novel's structure is a bit clumsy. The language is not the hyper-clean, fanciful, elegant prose people seem to love in contemporary Indian English-language writers. There are no drunken avatars, scheming matriarchs, spunky research scientists, or sexy-but-ill-fated intercaste romances. But what you do get is a real slice of Delhi life in all its kookiness, violence, desperation and denial. It's funny and devastating, and it's political without being preachy or heavy-handed. Lastly, in response to a reviewer below, I think if you knew any real-life Indian "upper-class belles", you'd find her characterizations there to be totally spot on.

This is a very good book, very well written. Each of the character's in the book are portrayed with skill and very realistically. Through the lives of sari shop assistants, owner and customers, the story depicts the modern day class differences and the multi-layered Indian society very well. Though some people may find it depressing, that's the reality and Ms. Bajwa tackles the issues boldly and illustrates the helplessness of a Sari shop assistant to do anything about it , even though he tries.

This book began with a really sweet beginning, all dramatic and cool, but it just kept getting more and more boring as things went on. The sequel to this book is awesome though, so I still highly reccomend this book!

Suprising redwallian misadventure.......2006-11-06
I love the redwall series. Every book is a joyous romp. Stories and characters are interesting and thoroughly enjoyable. This book, however, marked something of a departure. I was on a big redwall high when I first read the book, and read books 1-4 in order. When I got to this one (4), I was dissapointed. All of the redwall books have some familiarity as to the type of story, but this one came off as downright formulaic. The characters aren't very interesting or unusual, and the plot moves ahead at more of a plod than the usual redwall trot. The supposedly terrifying villian shows himself to be paranoid and incompetent and little else, a contrast to his supposed tyrannical and iron-clawed ways. His name is an eyesore to the sight and a complete departure from the usual creative, well-named villians of the other books. Mariel herself is somewhat amusing, but decidely one-dimensional and other than joseph, the other main characters are hardly drawn at all. This is easily the worst book in the redwall series, and when I've been surprised to see its one he's decided to build off of, considering how poorly done it is by comparison to other works in the series.
Read it only for the sake of reading the whole series, and possibly because of the re-use of characters in other books. It's a page-turner, but only because you can't wait for it to end.

I absolutely LOVE this book! It is sooo suspenseful, and a genuine page turner! Every one of Jacques' books I've read so far are truly amazing, and I praise him for his hard work!
Warriors and Peacemakers.......2006-03-14
One of my favorite Redwall books, with a strong and resourceful heroine. (Of course, she couldn't do it without her friends!) Mariel is tough and plucky, but a sweet soul deep down, and her battle to save her father and defeat the cruel and crazy Gabool the Wild is pure, thrilling Redwall adventure.
Notable also is Saxtus, whose clear-headed strategies help protect his home, despite his anti-war sentiments.

Like all of John Sanford's books, this one combines a Jungian approach with a Christian one ... but not the cut-and-dried, live-by-rote Christianity that shuts down thought & exploration. Sanford isn't interested in comfirming the mindset (or rut) of the unquestioning & self-satisfied Christian. He calls for a living faith, one which examines & challenges the inner being of the individual.
Here he delves into the question of Evil: what is it, really? And how do we cope with it? Refusing to take the easy route of placing it all Out There Somewhere, he explains the need to face the darkness within ourselves -- and more, to accept it as part of ourselves, to learn from it, to integrate it into our lives & so lessen its power over us.
This won't be a book for those who believe in safety, or in living by dogma & authority. It places the responsibility for understanding Evil & coming to terms with it squarely in our hands alone. It requires that we question what we've been taught, what we've believed, in order to come to a living, personally meaningful truth. For those willing to walk this more difficult path, the rewards will be great. Highly recommended!

This is one of the best books I have ever read and although the subject matter seems heavy, Sanford presents it in a light manner.
I found this book compelling. It was hard to put it down. It really gets into the idea of the shadow in a way I have not seen before.

Excellent! A truly amazing book........2002-08-03
John Sanford brilliantly crafts a study on the nature of evil in our world. Instead of being preachy and trite, he make valuable points about the importance of understanding the origins of evil in a detached manner.
I feel the approach to understanding evil is a necessary and healthy one. We must all see our shadow side and understand that evil in not something we need fear but attempt to understand and analyze.
Powerful and helpful, Sanford's ideas are conveyed in a basic yet deep manner. I highly recommend this book.
It will help the reader to understand others and themselves and the evil which is always with us in our world.

This is a wonderful cookbook with easy one page recipes that can be made in advance. The foods are served at room temperature so there is no cooking at the last minute. This cookbook is not only handy for picnics but also for luncheons or any time you want to prepare delicious and easy recipes ahead of time. And as an added bonus a CD or cassette is included which plays classic ragtime music.

So, every women should have a little black dress. Well, this is the book for summer picnics. It's very easy, fast and great tasting. I use this book to whip of quick picnic receipes with my nieces and grandkids. Cooking among some teenagers is becoming a lost art and the grandkids are always eager. When we use this book they don't even feel like they're cooking and then we can head for the picnic ground, beach or the backyard for some good eating and swimming.

I am a novice wood carver. I took a weekend class in Febuary, which which is the first time that I took up a carving knife. This book is an excellent resource for the beginner. Step by step instructions on two of the projects prepare you for the others that are contained in the book. It is illustrated in color, and has front and side view patterns for each of the projects. My proof that this is a worth five stars? My first carving from one of its patterns is recognizeable.

Great carving book. Good patterns for beginners also........2000-10-03
I really like this book. The layout is nice and the patterns are great. Some are easier to carve than others, as usual. However, some of the patterns are perfect for a beginner to tackle (I'm think mostly of the snowmen).
Mike has a great carving style of his own and does a good job showing you step by step what he is trying to accomplish.
If you like the subject matter then this is a great book to add to your collection.
