Book Description

From the acclaimed writer of Private Altars, comes a story of driving lyrical force set in Manhattan in the 1950s. When he is expelled from boarding school, Gabriel Gibbs is sent to live with his older brother Spencer in New York. Rather than a punishment, this becomes an exhilarating invitation to a dazzling world, from smoking cigars at the Plaza Hotel to weekend house parties filled with tennis and cocktails. It is in this heady atmosphere -- from white-gloved Park Avenue to literary Greenwich Village -- that Gabriel first glimpses the elusive Lillian Dawes. Free-spirited and mysterious, Lillian captures the imaginations of those in "all the best circles," including both brothers. As their lives entwine, so begins the powerful and poignant unraveling of innocence.

While Katherine Mosby's cool, feline prose is entirely her own, careful readers will hear the faint echoes of Edith Wharton and Henry James in this beguiling second novel, The Season of Lillian Dawes. In the wake of some adolescent antics at his private school, Gabriel Gibbs, a member of an extended aristocratic family in a privileged segment of society in post-World War II New York, is expelled. He is sent to live on West Ninth Street with his older brother Spencer, a poet and wit, who a female acquaintance describes as "one of those tall, charming men you know would be absolutely useless in an emergency." Here he first learns of the mysterious Lillian Dawes, whose allure, like that of Max Beerbohm's femme fatale, Zuleika Dobson, rests in part on her beauty and vivacity and in part on her perplexing air of detachment. But Lillian is not as detached as she seems. Only after her sudden disappearance from the lives of Gabriel and Spencer does her own troubling quest come to light. The Season of Lillian Dawes is a novel of distinction, with acid Salingeresque dialogue balanced by elegiac renderings of Manhattan in the 1950s. --Regina Marler

THE SEASON OF LILLIAN DAWES by Katherine Mosby
March 17, 2005

THE SEASON OF LILLIAN DAWES is going to be one of my favorite books for 2005. Beautifully written, the story is about Gabriel Gibbs who has just been kicked out of boarding school and is forced to live with his older brother (by ten years) Spencer in New York. He is introduced to the life of high society and attends parties and other social events with his brother. It is during this time spent in New York that Gabriel becomes aware of a woman named Lillian Dawes and he becomes obsessed with her. It is more than just a crush. She is the center of his summer, but he also spends his time getting to know his eccentric Aunt Lavinia, who had just moved from Paris, studies under the tutelage of Spencer, and enjoys his time at cocktail parties and weekend soirees. It is, in a way, a coming of age book, with a twist.

Reading this book will remind many of THE GREAT GATSBY and other pieces of that time. Mosby's writing is definitely not for the average reader, and this book is not a casual read. Be prepared for some serious reading. Those who are not focused on the book will most likely lose interest. But if you are a reader that has the patience for highbrow narratives, this book will definitely keep you entertained. The mystery behind Lillian Dawes is the focal point of the last half of the book, and if nothing else, this should help the reader reach that last page.

3 out of 5 stars Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before..........2004-01-13

This novel I actually listened to on tape, and though it made my seven hour car ride enjoyable, I couldn't help thinking I've read this book before...I think that's because it reminds me of other famous novels--"The Great Gatsby" meets "Catcher in the Rye," meets Edith Wharton's social commentary. I was quickly able to guess the secret identity of the missing heir who was swindled, and the only suspense was how it was all going to work-out. Mosby's writing style was pleasant, and I enjoyed the difficult vocabulary she interjects--its refreshing to read (or my case, listen), to something that is not written for the lowest common denominator. Its not over-burdened with difficult vocabulary, though the author's descriptive metaphors were often a little forced, and seemed like they were only there to show-off her cleverness. Gabriel was wiser than his years or experience, and Lillian didn't seem entirely believable. I understand that Gabriel would have over-exaggerated her charms since he was enamored, but Lillian shows too much book-intellect for someone that left home at 17 with no formal education beyond that point. Had the author showed her more as someone with a curious, insightful mind (with some life experiences that broadened her education), it would have been easier to believe. The other characters were not fully developed by the author to better understand their behavior, and I for one enjoy more descriptions of their looks so I can better imagine what the characters look like as I'm reading. Everyone does seem much too intelligent, but a private prep school education in the '50s was probably more stringent than a '90s college education...Aunt Livinia adds some comic relief to the novel, though I couldn't helping feeling she was channeling Oscar Wilde with her constant witticisms and social observations. On the whole I enjoyed the novel, and will read the book again to see if I missed something by listening to it on tape. (I will actually enjoy having my dictionary handy to look-up words that are rarely used today in literature.) Also, I wasn't crazy about the ending--I guess I've grown accustomed to the tidy, Hollywood-endings, and had hoped for at least a little hint as to what happened to Lillian and Spencer.

5 out of 5 stars A backward glance at a long-gone New York.......2003-08-12

A witty and engaging first-person narrative of New York in 1954. In addition to the brilliant and mysterious Lillian Dawes, whose first noncameo appearance doesn't occur until a third of the book is behind you, you'll meet the brothers Gabriel and Spencer Gibbs, who are temporarily rooming together (for reasons explained in the opening chapter), and their delightful aunt Lavinia, who brings her own silverware, and her dog, to restaurants.

The story is written in the first person, by Gabriel at some point in his future, and it joins the ever-growing list of "New York" novels, and quite near the top, too. Comparisons with "Catcher in the Rye" as well as Henry James and Edith Wharton are inevitable. There's also more than a touch of "Breakfast at Tiffanys."

New Yorkers with long memories, or their children and grandchildren, will delight in the references to the politics of the time (Joe McCarthy, the Rosenbergs, President Eisenhower) as well as to artifacts of the "Populuxe" era--transistor radios, hula hoops--and long-gone New York eating places, like Schraffts.

Tidily done.

2 out of 5 stars Collective Disappointment.......2003-07-20

This book was chosen by my office reading group. It was generally felt to be a disappointment. I for one really liked the writing style and prose but wondered why simpler words were not chosen. Some felt, too, they required a dictionary by their side. It was definitely a book one could easily put down. There wasn't much in the way of character development and the story lacked intrigue. The ending, too, was a disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars He aint Holden!.......2003-07-08

There were many wonderful things about the book: namely the compelling female characters. They were quirky and believable and had great lines.
But Gabriel, the narrator--who is he? What does he look like? How old is he supposed to be when he's telling this story? What kid talks like this?
Holden would tell it to you straight: This kid's a phony!
As for evoking the zeitgiest of New York in the 1950s, I found the book unconvincing. Sure, there was the requisite mention of the McCarthy hearings and a liberal sprinkling of place names to set the scene, but then some neologism or trendy food item (pinenuts, etc.) would throw me off.
Finally, there are some real gimmicky things happening in the end as mysterious heir surfaces and true identity is revealed blah blah blah. Why add all these trappings to what could have been a bittersweet, ordinary (in the good sense) story of a boy's lost love?
Still, there's no denying that the novel has its charms, something that makes these faults all the more regrettable.

War threatens the Four Lands, and Shannara's only hope lies in Penderrin Ohmsford, but it's a dreadfully slim hope. To save his world, Pen must restore his aunt, the former Ilse Witch, to her rightful position as High Druid of Shannara. But first Pen must free his aunt Grianne from the Forbidding: the world of the demons. To have the slightest chance of freeing her, he must find the mystical tree called the Tanequil, and somehow craft a talisman from its wood. But Shadea a'Ru, the treacherous usurper of his aunt's position, will do anything to stop Pen--and she has already captured Pen's parents and forced them to reveal their son's whereabouts. Sen Dunsidan, the monstrous Prime Minister of the Federation, has armed his greatest airship with a horrible new weapon. And Pen is just a boy, accompanied on his dangerous quest by only a Dwarf, a young Elf, and a blind Rover girl.

Filled with action, treachery, and sacrifice, Tanequil will enthrall Terry Brooks's millions of fans as it roars to a shocking conclusion. However, newcomers to the Shannara series should not begin with Tanequil. It's the middle book of the High Druid of Shannara trilogy, and the thirteenth novel of a complicated high-fantasy series with numerous characters and sentient races. Newcomers should start with Jarka Ruus, the first book of the High Druid trilogy--or, better yet, with The Sword of Shannara, the first book of the series. --Cynthia Ward

Book Description

Dark magic has opened a gateway to the Forbidding and trapped within it Grianne Ohmsford, rightful High Druid of Shannara. Rescuing Grianne will be merely the beginning of the effort to return the Four Lands to some semblance of peace. Only her young nephew, Penderrin, has any hope of returning her to power. But to breach the Forbidding and bring Grianne back to the natural world, Pen must find the fabled Tanequil . . . and the talisman it alone can provide. That means journeying into the Inkrim–a dreaded region thick with shadows and haunted by harrowing legends. And there, Pen will strike a bargain more dire than he could ever imagine.

Sen Dunsidan, Prime Minister of the Federation, paused to look back over his shoulder as he reached his sleeping chambers.

There was no one there who shouldn¿t be. His personal guard at the bedroom doorway, the sentries on watch at both ends of the hallway¿no one else. There never was. But that didn¿t stop him from checking every night. His eyes scanned the torchlit corridor carefully. It didn¿t hurt to make certain. It only made sense to be careful. He entered and closed the door softly behind him. The warm glow and sweet candle smells that greeted him were reassuring. He was the most powerful man in the Southland, but not the most popular. That hadn¿t bothered him before the coming of the Ilse Witch, but it hadn¿t stopped bothering him since. Even though she was finally gone, banished to a realm of dark madness and bloodlust from which no one had ever escaped, he did not feel safe.

He stood for a moment and regarded his reflection in the full-length mirror that was backed against the wall opposite his bed. The mirror had been placed there for other reasons: for a witnessing of satisfactions and indulgences that might as well have happened in another lifetime, so distant did they seem to him now. He could have them still, of course, but he knew they would give him no pleasure. Hardly anything pleasured him these days. His life had become an exercise conducted with equal measures of grim determination and iron will. Political practicalities and expediencies motivated everything he did. Every act, every word had ramifications that reached beyond the immediate. There was no time or place for anything else. In truth, there was no need.

His reflection stared back at him, and he was mildly shocked to see how old he had become. When had that happened? He was in the prime of his life, sound of mind and body, at the apex of his career, arguably the most important man in the Four Lands. Yet look what he had become. His hair had gon

Ok, to others, it may be known as the "Trade Paperback."

To me, it's the paperback book that would look out of place with my regularly-sized paperback books on the shelf.

Del Rey, listen up!!! I REFUSE to buy this until it comes out in a regular paperback edition! End of story! I will not settle for this monstrous volume that might feel small in some NBA player's hands.

Does that mean I won't get to see how the story progresses?? OH WELL!!! I'm NOT going to compromise just so you can pocket another $5-$6 on material that cost you far less.

I bought this for my grandson. He has read all of the series, and really enjoyed them. He is 21 yrs old. He also has dyslexia, and has never liked to read. So this was special to both of us that, He said he got so into the book that he forgot where he was.

3 out of 5 stars Middle novel of a Terry Brooks story.......2006-07-31

Terry Brooks has made a career out of a complicated fantasy world where magic rules as well as politics and inter-racial warfare keeps the balance of good versus evil in a constant state of flux. In all of his books there are several steady components: The Ohmsford family through all of its generations is imbued with a strong strain of magic that they are regularly called upon to exercise even if they do not wish to do so.

In this installment, we are reading about the adventures of a 14 years boy named Pen Ohmsford, his parents whom we were introduced to in the previous trilogy, his aunt who was a major character in the previous trilogy and the new situation where the Federation is still fighting the Freeborn, there is much conflict amongst the Druids, and the Demons are making their plans to come back from the Forbidding to which they were banished thousands of years ago.

If all this seems too convoluted for a single book of about 350 pages in length, you are correct! Terry Brooks writes complex stories and to help resolve the plots, he actually needs about 1000 pages and so the story gets cut up into three volumes. This leads always to a silly device in which at the end of each volume, there is a cliffhanging plot development (this volume is no different). As a longtime reader of this series, I find this little affectation rather annoying, but I suppose the author and the publishers want to ensure that you do not hesitate to purchase the next volume.

Anyway, this book is the middle volume which means that none of the plot lines gets resolved but instead, the world seems headed for the dumpster. As is standard in Terry Brooks stories, this is the time in which things are at their darkest and most splintered. In this one, Grianne Ohsmford is struggling to understand why she is in the Forbidding and what are the plans that the Demon Lord has for her; Penn Ohmsford manages to fulfill the first part of his quest and loses much of what is dear to him in the process; Rue and Bek find out about the plot and try to save Penn only to be caught in the Druid machinations and are imprisoned in Paranor Keep; The Federation discovers a new weapon and uses it to defeat the Elf army while killing its king and causing them to retreat; as well as other smaller sub-plots that are too numerous to detail here.

Suffice it to say, that I trust Terry Brooks to bring all the threads together in the final volume and resolve the situation for this generation.

If you are new to Shannara and Terry Brooks DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! you MUST have the background provided by Jarka Ruus and the previous series' to make any sense out of this and understand the flow of what is going on. If you are a fan of Terry's and have read Jarka Ruus, then you MUST buy this book to be prepared for Straken.

The only improvement I would wish for would be for these three volumes to be combined into one book that contains the complete story. One thousand page fantasy books are out there and would contain the complete story from start to finish which would be an improvement. But perhaps that is too much to ask for?

3 out of 5 stars series in decline.......2006-07-10

Although I loved the first Shannara series, something of the magic has departed the more recent books. Picking up where Book I left off, Tanequil tells the stories of what has happened to the world since Griane Ohmsford's betrayal. As her enemies work to solidify their rule, her family tries to find her. Spurred by the words of the King of the Silver River, her nephew, Pen, searches for the Tanequil, a magical tree, somewhat like the Ellcrys, to craft a dark wand so he can journey into the Forbidding to rescue her, but he did not count to cost before setting out, and it is dear. Meanwhile, Griane's plight is more desperate than she can imagine. Now the prisoner of the Straken Lord, she is forced to call upon her own evil to survive, risking losing herself in the process.
Though a good story, too much of it revolves around politics. Had the focus remained on the Ohmsfords, it would have been more engaging. Still, Terry Brooks is a safe bet to read.

4 out of 5 stars A great story with some re-used ideas.......2006-07-03

I'm definitely an avid Brooks fan, and this book is not a disappointment. There are some very similar elements between Tanequil and the Voyage of the Jerle Shannara series ( a girl with special sight who sacrifices herself for her airship companions, e.g. ). Even so, it kept me up at night, wanting to finish. I can't wait start Straken!

      THE YEAR IS 2360

She was trained to be a killing machine. Abandoned as a child, without home or family, past or future, Zetha survived only by her own cunning in the back alleys of Romulus before being taken by the Tal Shiar and remade into one of its deadliest weapons. But Zetha is about to undertake a mission unlike any in her experience.

The mysterious return of a virulent scourge thought to be long extinct threatens devastation on a scale almost too horrific to contemplate. Zetha's only hope of stopping it is across the Neutral Zone -- among the enemies of Romulus. Now Admiral Uhura, centenarian chief of Starfleet Intelligence, must decide what to do with the knowledge Zetha has risked her life to bring to her. In order to stop the spread of the disease that is already ravaging the Romulan Empire, Uhura must assign a hand-picked team of Starfleet officers to covertly trace the contagion to its source -- and do whatever is necessary to contain it.

But the world awaiting Lieutenant Benjamin Sisko, Lieutenant Tuvok, Dr. Selar, and Zetha herself is a hot zone of secrets, deceptions, and subtle machinations revealing an imminent holocaust beyond anything the away team expected, or what they could hope to combat.

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent story........2005-01-25

Granted, the "biological warfare" plot device has been used before, and as recently as the "Next Generation: Double Helix" miniseries. Still, it was handled well in this instance, and we got a well-written, moving, enjoyable story featuring an elderly Nyota Uhura, an even more elderly Leonard McCoy, a very young Lt. Benjamin Sisko, and somewhat ageless Dr. Selar and Tuvok. The only real flaw I could complain about was that even given the state of the art gerontology available in the 24th century Federation, which allows people to live to the age of 150 or so, Uhura seemed awfully spry for somebody 120 years old. No, spry isn't the word. Spry I could have believed. She seemed downright youthful, and that just didn't seem right. I don't mind her aging gracefully, but I object to her not aging at all by that point. It just didn't seem plausible.

5 out of 5 stars Best Star Trek Fiction in a long, long time.......2004-11-10

Margaret Wander Bonanno's "Catalyst of Sorrows (Star Trek: The Lost Era, 2360)" is the best example of Star Trek fiction I have come across in a long, long time. Indeed, it approaches high quality literature, and along with Diane Duane's first Star Trek novel, may be the two finest examples in the series. Bonanno's long overdue return to the Star Trek franchise has been well worth the wait, since this novel is a brilliant combination of medical thriller with space opera. Although it offers one of the most complex plots in Star Trek fiction lately, I still found it a very compelling read, and one quite difficult to put down.

The Romulan Star Empire is in the grip of a mysterious illness which soon travels across the Neutral Zone into Federation space, wreaking havoc too on Federation citizens, causing fatalities amongst Vulcans, Rigellians and humans. Star Fleet Intelligence chief Admiral Nyota Uhura receives an unexpected visitor, Tal Shiar agent Zehta, bearing news from Senator Cretak, an old Romulan acquaintance, of this devestating disease. She sends an infiltration team led by the young Lieutenant Benjamin Sisko into the Neutral Zone, in search of the disease's origins and a possible cure. This is a splendid mixture of characters from all of the Star Trek series - with the notable exception of Enterprise - including Lieutenant Tuvok, Doctor Selar, Doctor Beverly Crusher and crotchy old Admiral Leonard McCoy. Star Trek fans and others in search of high quality science fiction will not be disappointed with this fine novel.

      5 out of 5 stars Bravissima!!!.......2004-04-24

I remember how thoroughly I enjoyed reading Margaret Wander Bonanno's early Star Trek novels, Dwellers in the Crucible and Strangers from the Sky, way back in the days when I didn't know a Romulan from a doorknob. I knew then that only an exceptional storyteller could weave a Trek tale that even a non-Trekker like me could follow and enjoy. You can imagine, therefore, how much more gratifying it was for me, now that I'm so much better versed in Trek culture, to delve into Ms. Bonanno's newest saga, Catalyst of Sorrows, and meet the author on her own terms!

It's been so long since I was able to lose myself in a such an excellent novel, one that beckons to me again and again after I've set it down. And given my time constraints, and the snail's pace at which I normally read, you have to figure that I was forced, like it or not, to set the book down a lot over a 3-4 week period. Any author who can hold my interest for that long deserves my deepest gratitude and respect.

Catalyst was engrossing from beginning to end, and a sheer joy to read. That's more than I can say about most of the books I've picked up over the last ten years. I should point out that this is by no means a simple, mono-dimensional story to follow, what with the frequent scene shifts and flashbacks, all the different characters and points of view that Ms. Bonanno introduces. This multi-level back-and-forth technique has always characterized her writing, and she has developed it into an art form. I say that to her credit The critic who likened her to a skilled juggler who could keep so many plots in the air at one time wasn't exaggerating.

Catalyst unfolds like a movie, and that's just how the scenes played out in my mind. The transitions were seamless, each section building upon or embellishing another. Wherever Ms. Bonanno went, she took me with her. Not only was I able to follow the story's progress (zig-zags and all), but I could appreciate the way all the puzzle pieces fit together, the way she strung the reader along, letting out the proverbial line a little at a time, feeding him constant information, yet without revealing too much too soon. Even though she often took me by surprise with a new character or story element, I learned early on to trust her to reveal the connection. She never let me down.

Take note: The chapter dealing with the split between the Vulcans and the Romulans is an extraordinary piece of writing! I enjoyed it so much, I read it twice.

Of course, the heart of any great Star Trek saga is its humanity---or "humanoidity" as the case may be. Character development was so rich, and the interplay among the leads was so right on, I felt as though the author knew these people better than I know myself. Much as I would love to recommend Catalyst to Trekkers and non-Trekkers alike, I have to say that the reader does need a prior knowledge of the principle players to fully appreciate just how vividly Ms. Bonanno portrayed them: their personalities, idiosyncracies, speech patterns, all the emotional and quirky nuances that make them ring true and come to life before one's eyes. It takes a special skill, I think, and a prodigious amount of research, to develop and add dimensions to pre-established characters in a Trek saga without altering them or overstepping their parameters. The same holds true for Trek history and chronology. Call it literary "Prime Directive", if you will.

Catalyst of Sorrows is a rich, absorbing tale told by a master story teller at the height of her powers. Heartiest kudos to Margaret Wander Bonanno for a job well done! And to any fans of hers who have not yet read her Dwellers and Strangers, I say: You don't know what your missing!

4 out of 5 stars Welcome back, Margaret.......2004-02-28

"Catalyst of Sorrows" is one of the most engrossing, intelligent pieces of Trek literature to come down the pipeline in quite some time. Margaret Wander Bonanno's presence has been sorely missed, and this proved to be well worth the wait. "Catalyst" is one of the few Trek novels that binds together the disparate elements of every series from TOS to the New Frontier novels (excluding, of course, "Enterprise"). This was a common enough theme in The Lost Era cycle, but Bonanno pulls off a great finale, writing an engaging medical thriller that serves as both adventure and character builder, which is what truly defines a "great" Star Trek novel; we are able to glimpse additional facets to our favorite characters' personalities.

The plot itself seems convoluted, but it is not so; at the core is a group of Starfleet officers and a Romulan psuedo-defector attempting to seek out the source of a deadly virus, known to the Romulans as the Gnawing. There is a lot of medical terminology tossed about, but with the inclusion of the all too human Uhura, this is easily explained in laymans terms (quite an effictive literary tool; it not only allows the layreader among us to not feel ignorant, but it also shows us that Admiral Uhura does not know everything). There are fascinating glimpses into the construction of the virus and its devastating effects.

There are frequent point-of-view shifts and these occur sometimes two or three times in a section; one moment we will be in McCoy's head, the next Uhura's, the next Selar's, but the transitions are seamless and easy to follow. This is not an easy read by any means, but this is fortunate; it serves to drive the plot and score the importance of the task at hand. Indeed, it is a true master of the craft that can manage such a task with ease.

As for the characters themselves, we are given a glimpse into the past lives of Drs. Crusher and Selar, Tuvok, and a young engineer named Benjamin Sisko. Along for the journey are Admiral Tal of the Romulan Empire, best known for his stint in "Vulcan's Heart" and the Original Series episode "The Enterprise Incident," and Curzon Dax, making yet another appearance in "The Lost Era." Sisko is a brash lieutenant concerned with phase coils and his new family while Crusher is a dedicated young physician raising a son by herself. Zetha, the Romulan girl sent by Senator Cretak, is herself something of an anamoly; whose agenda is she working towards, and what is her parentage? This is the most telling question of the novel, and Bonanno skillfully manipulates the readers' emotions and makes us truly care about this new character. Her innocent, freckled personage is perhaps the most intriguing character in the book.

While this is not the easiest novel to read by any means--it did take me a couple of weeks to finish; in parts, it was somewhat plodding--it is a worthwhile read, and fans of Bonanno's earlier Trek novels "Dwellers in the Crucible" and "Strangers From the Sky" will thoroughly enjoy this book, as will loyal fans looking to fill in lost pieces of the vast tapestry that is Star Trek.

      3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2004-02-06

This novel proved to be a very complex read. There were various twist and turns I did not expect and the interaction of multiple characters from various show/books helped reduce some of the complexity.

There are many jumps from one point of view to another and at times, this is very distracting. There are often times where two characters are talk and the audience needs to know about a specific event. Well it just happens that we had a few other characters involved in that event and it happened a few minutes ago. Therefore, we jump back to that event and only that one event, then right back to the other current scene.

All the point of view changes, moving forward and backwards through the timeline of the story, provide the most complexity. Only a single major character was created for this story, a young innocent Romulan. The remainder of the cast is from familiar shows and books and not a lot of development was put into them.

The epilogue, the last twelve pages, drove this book up a full rating in my opinion. Favorite characters are shoved forward into the lives we know they will lead and we get to see one of my favorite minor characters.

5 out of 5 stars Well-researched, smart and entertaining read.......1999-03-16

Great book! Fascinating historical anecdotes, extensive descriptions of various craft-breweries and beers, and terrific photographs make for a fun and informative book. This is a must-read for anyone with a strong interest in beer...interest beyond gargantuan plastic mugs and flaccid, aluminum-flavored, fraternity party kegs of 'weak-weiser'!

5 out of 5 stars An actual, detailed and pleasant book.......1999-02-25

In a very balanced way, between the " conaissance" and the simple language, it is a very good book. Most of the conseils and description of the beers of the world are correct. The others i'll try!

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up!.......1997-10-18

Turns a novice beer drinker (me) into a beer connoisseur! I consulted the guide before my last vacation and ended up at a great new brewery in my home town. It'll be a great holiday gift for my beer-guzzling friends!

                                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Menzel's career and art.......1998-06-03

During his lifetime which spanned most of the 19th century, Menzel was perhaps Germany's foremost realist painter and graphic artist. He illustrated both the great events of contemporary history, such as the 1848 Revolution in Berlin and the Franco-Prussian War, as well as the mundane events of daily life. This catalogue, which was published to accompany an exhibition of the artist's works (and seen in Paris, Washington, DC, and Berlin) is the most complete English-language account of the artist's life and his art. The essays are written by expert curators and art historians. The volume is profusely illustrated, and include his key works, from his graphic illustrations of Frederick the Great to his Iron Rolling Mill of the mid-1870s. The catalogue will be of interest to historians, art historians, and the general public alike.

The fabulous Golden Age of Radio -- the 1930s & 1940s -- possessed a sense of excitement, purpose & unpredictability that made it one of America's most memorable eras. At the center of it was Norman Corwin, who as writer, director & producer brought an intelligence & eloquence previously unheard over the medium. CBS broadcast Corwin's classic achievements, among them the 1941 "We Hold These Truths" & the VE Day special, "On a Note of Triumph." He worked with great performers like Orson Welles & James Stewart. This is the biography of a man who elevated the art & integrity of broadcasting. It is a detailed, nostalgic remembrance of an unforgettable age, full of the voices & personalities that are part of our golden past. B&W photos.
