This completely frank, thought-provoking, and often wryly humorous account of life in Berlin before the fall of the Wall will go straight to your heart with its fascinating stories and tales from both sides of the Divided City. With poignancy and warmth, the author creates believable characters who adhere to their own truths, not necessarily the expectations of the reader.
The personable, unnamed speaker in this first person narrative is a writer trying to create the story of a man "caught in a back-and-forth motion over the Wall, like a soccer goalie in an instant replay, always taking the same dive to miss the same ball." Virtually all the Berliners we meet here--from both East and West--are in the same situation as the unfortunate goalie, as they, too, go back and forth, repeatedly mistaking the moves of people from the other "side," misinterpreting signals, and often, in their ignorance, failing to "get it."
The author provides an amazingly complete, though somewhat sanitized, picture of the Wall-jumpers--not those poor souls who were brutally machine-gunned by Wall guards, but people like the speaker who come and go across the Wall with relative impunity because they do not call attention to themselves. And Schneider is quick to point out that most of the East Berliners are fairly satisfied with their lives, which are depicted with much warmth, as families and friends spend a great deal of time with each other, undistracted by the responsibilities of "freedom."
The fascinating philosophical discussions and personal revelations that occur among friends from both sides may sweep away your preconceptions about life in Berlin, as they did mine, and you may find yourself reevaluating your thinking about society and politics in general, and about Germany, in particular. Staying Dead.......2007-08-27
Wren is a Retriever, someone who specialises in finding missing items, no questions asked. In a world where magic (Talent) is a not so well kept secret.
For the first 107 pages of Staying Dead I was going to give it 2 stars. I just couldn't connect with the story. Maybe it's because Wren seemed isolated which made it difficult for me to warm to her. Exceptions are when she's interacting with other characters - her meetings with PB, and the Wizzart, let us see she's not just a two-dimensional cut-out character.
On page 108 Wren calls on Perry Mason and Lord Peter Wimsey for inspiration and suddenly the story is off and running. It's after this point that Wren and Sergei (her business partner) start to interact more as a team and it's in exploring their relationship that the story really works. When they are together there is a depth and pace that's missing when they are apart.
In the last sixty pages the story really picks up (if only it had been like this all the way through I would have given it 4 stars). The ending is poignant and leaves this story nicely tied up with enough plot threads left dangling to entice the reader to pick up the sequel.
On the plus side - it's a well thought out Universe populated by interesting characters - the fatae (supernatural beings) have a small role here but there is the feeling they will play a bigger part in future books.
On the minus side - I feel the story is let down by poor editing, especially in the first half of the book. Overuse of certain words distracts from the flow of the writing and 100 pages is a long time to wait for a story to get going.
Enjoying it.......2007-06-19
I know I'm coming late to the Laura Anne Gilman party, but I just started this series.
The book is a bit slow to start and bogs down in a couple places, but overall I really enjoyed the world that Ms. Gilman has created. I loved her characters too, especially Sergei.
The author has managed to hook me and I'll definitely be reading the next book. Just remember that if you pick this book up, don't let the beginning make you stop reading. Keep on and the plot will catch you. It's one of those books.
A completely different series.......2007-06-01
This is a series that I recently went back to after reading it in 04 and I fell into a whole different world. Told in third person that changes perspectives often, we are in a world where Magic coexists with the normal world, doesn't it always? Wren is a retriever who works with her friend Sergei. When they are hired to retrieve a stone that holds something inside, the case becomes extremely complicated. Wren cannot figure out who is behind it all and worst of all her partner, whom she has worked with for years is keeping secrets from her and she can't stand that. It hurts even more when she starts having other kinds of feelings for him develop. While her life is spinning out of control Wren must do whatever it takes to pull it back together and hang on to the love of her life.

If I could give it less than 1 star I would. This book is so not worth the time it takes to pull it off the shelf much less to actually read it. I had to give it up on page 100, I just could not go on. I read the reviews available when I was looking for new authors, this one had good ones. So I bought it and it sat on my shelf for a while. I wish it had stayed there. It is sssslllllooooowwwww, and not much happens at all. What does happen is confusing and boring. Definately won't recommend this to anyone. If you want a good read check out Kim Harrison and her "Hollows" series. Now that's good reading!

I have to agree with several of the reviewers up to a point, the book didn't drag, since dragging implies movement. The author stalled out and never did get going faster then a turtle but please do not give up on the author. The second book in the series is better, I realize that since you don't know me you may not believe me but it does, it really does.
Note: Several incidents in the second book reference back to the first book but if you didn't read it no fear, you can still enjoy the second book without reading (it may be better if you don't) the first book.

A strange, baggy short story of a book, whose main character is really its setting - eery, claustrophobic, fatefully character converging and inescapable winter-time Provincetown.
One drifter, Rill, lucks into a house-sitting gig at P'town, looking after the huge black cat Obsidian, of the title. He promptly invites black wannabe poet Embert, smelly peanut butter eating misogynist Milo and New York Times addicted Jewish loner Bernie, all likewise indigent to some extent or other, to join him. And there they sit through the winter as Embert's two-timing of his girlfriend(s), Milo and Bernie's forlorn attempts at love and Rill's slow pursuits of the beauty of the dunes around the town all work their pressuring way on the four of them. Embert is the central character, in that he changes and has goals you see achieved. The others may act, or fail to act, but finally just drift away and from the place, having been friends for a while then re-lurched back to loneliness.
Milo and Bernie are too narrowly differentiated and both have romantic failures because of ill-judged tirades before the objects of their desire. But there is a feel for the loneliness of the failure here, and a sense of the creeping inevitability that gradually turns a temporary lack of will into a forgone conclusion and a lonely life.
The style is often the laconic spit of facts and brisk characterisation found in a story told over a beer, and much of the story's action is set in specific taverns and coffee shops, teeny apartments and chichi boutiques that the resident or visitor to Provincetown may find nostalgically charming. Visitors and tourists, sometimes on sexual safari, are economically and shrewdly sketched, the scene of Embert's being blithely propositioned by a rich tourist boasting of her husband's prowess in bed particularly well done.
The town is viscerally evoked, and the prose occasionally bursts up into a flourish of leaf rattling, like a great mass of gold leaves suddenly in cry - as in the scene when Obsidian makes a bid too far for grandeur and crawls off to die.
Good for a quiet afternoon, reading in a chair, maybe thinking of Provincetown or just the way that a given season in your life and a few friends you knew may just have been a time of opportunity never seen again.

When You Just Can't Find the Right Words.............2006-11-06
Sometimes you are at a lose for words regarding a certain subject, need, or your prayers to the Goddess are getting too mundane. This books really helps you find those words, and even write new ones for yourself.
Besides all that. Sirona Knights affirmations to the Goddess are comforting. The affirmations for bedtime are soothing and relaxing.

On one hand, I wasn't to crazy about the writing style, somewhat repetitive. But...the book does have many very beautiful incantations, blessings and prayers! I will certainly use them as a base and only do moderate personalization. The chapters are also nicely laid out with information about the appropriate forms of the Goddess for that topic.

Sirona Knight is one of the most talented Goddess-Centered writers I have come across. In her latest book, Goddess Bless, Knight takes the reader from the origin of Devotions, Prayers, and Affirmations to contemporary usage and application.
The book (as the title suggests) is completely Goddess oriented....very little if any mention of a male diety...a perfect gift for any Dianic Witch or someone needing to learn the basics of spell-working, prayer, and the power of visualization.
Recommended without reservation.

This author did a fantastic job creating this price guide for all the Shirley fans in the world who just can't get enough! It has been quite a while since an author has done a new Shirley price guide and it was much needed. But this Author's version was much different than the other price guides as it shows everything and anything that is out there...old and new! I just loved both books on Shirley Temple!
Volume 2 has even more than volume 1 as far as pictures and memorabilia goes. I loved the pictures with the people she starred with in her movies ( it brought back fond memories from my childhood.
More people should be interested in Shirley, it is a great subject for children-even today!
We buy the videos for our grandkids.

I was very disapointed with this book. For a book that was published in 2001 all but a few of the photo's look dated. Way overdone, dark and heavy for today's style. Even the photography has a dated grainy look. Jo credits her parents as the ones who encouraged her to accomplish her dreams by learning. Well Jo, as an interior designer myself with 20+ years under my belt...you need to go back to square one and learn some new material.
This is THE worst decorating book I have ever read.......2003-11-15
If you love clutter, ill conceived floor plans, bad scale and poor color choices; this is the book for you. Jo needs to go back and rediscover the harmony of scale and color. Even the jacket picture she selected of herself and her family is unflattering.
I like the fact that she truly is trying to come up with ideas and ways to cut costs but it looks half done or over done with just too many things going on to take away from the total design.
This is the first negative review I have ever written. I purchased this book for some creative ideas but I ended up recycling the book in my mixed paper bin because it really is "that bad".

Based on its cover, which let's face it, is how we buy decorating books, this one looked really interesting and quite sumptuous. Unfortunately, the contents did not live up to the cover and featured rooms and ideas that are already beginning to look "dated". There were no ideas for creating a rich or monied decorating style and the text was rather "homespun". Having bought it on sale, I was very glad I hadn't paid full price; I would have been most disappointed.

Scan the pages of Decorating Rich for some beautiful photography and interesting ideas. Skip the narrative, as it is labored and dull. It is a good coffee table book that won't make any demand on your brain power, even if you read the text.
Full of great ideas, but not all of them practical........2002-01-09
Jo Packham proves that you can have a beautiful home without spending a fortune. Success depends on buying only what you love and arranging it well, not on how much you spend. Jo starts with a terrific section on creative wall treatments and then continues with various ways to accessorize the home. Many of her ideas are excellent, such as using inexpensive fabrics in luxurious ways. Others sound like she is giving how-to's on creating a window-display, not a home. How does someone use towels that are tied together with beaded tassels, or put wet soap back in the seashell soap dish without getting water drops on the fan underneath? Tucking fancy dishtowels over cupboard doors may look pretty, but they have to be re-arranged each time the door is opened.
All in all, a good book for those who want ideas on creative ways to decorate with what they love without spending a great deal of money.

Silver Horn's lifespan (1860-1940) placed him in the midst of extreme cultural transformations: by the time of his death, highways, silos, and gas stations dominated the land that had, at his birth, been the domain of buffalo herds and Plains Indians. Silver Horn's art documents these massive changes in the lives of the Kiowa Indians, as well as changes in Kiowa art itself: from the traditional hide paintings, themes of warfare, and two-dimensional perspectives, Silver Horn progressed through ledger drawings, scenes of domesticity, and experiments with more naturalistic styles. The bridge he created between ancient Kiowa aesthetics and modern forms of expression had dramatic impact, serving as models for younger Native American artists such as he Kiowa Five of the 1930s, and influencing contemporary artists such as Sharron Ahtone Jarjo, T.C. Cannon, and Sherman Chaddlesone.
Works by each of these artists appeared at the Alfred Smart Museum of Art for Transforming Images, the first comprehensive exhibition of Silver Horn's work to date. This volume, richly illustrated with 75 color plates and 15 black and white photographs, collects art and commentary from the exhibit.

Historical, political, personal.......2001-09-22
My favorite way to learn about history is through the voice of a person who lived in that time. Often, however, the most readable first-person narratives leave something to be desired in breadth, since a single real person cannot be everywhere and have opinions on everything. Unless, it seems, that person is Eleanor Roosevelt. Her voice in her 'My Day' columns is authoritative, compassionate, wise, and insightful. Her opinions and philosophy on politics and diplomacy, both national and international, seem to me very pertinent to some of issues we face in our world today. Since I read this book, I have found myself hypothesizing about what she would have thought about some current happenings as I try to make sense of them. The editorial introductions to each year and each article excerpt in the book are well-written and provide the right amount of context to frame the excerpts without distracting from them.
A Great Lady.......2001-03-16
I grew up during World War II and remember seeing Eleanor Roosevelt on news reels traveling around the world. I had no idea until I read this book of what a full and interesting life she was living. She had much pain and sorrow in her life, but she carried on.
I like her down to earth writing. She has written about ordinary things and left some things unsaid which is fine. She came from a very reserved background so it's to be expected. Her childhood was during a very different time than today. That she did so much for others is evidence of that upbringing.
After reading this book, I visited Hyde Park. I went first to her house at Val-Kill before I went to the Big House and Library. I recommend a visit to everyone because I believe you get a real feel for her there. At Val-Kill it's like she has just stepped out for a moment, but will be back.
I recommend this book to everyone. Editors give background information before each selection for those who weren't alive during the time. Eleanor did not go into great detail in her columns as, of course, her readers at the time would know what she was talking about.

If you think you are being singled out by many of the people around you - try and remember what you might have done to them. They maybe out to make you pay for their discomfort. Well, if they have read one of Hayduke's books - you are in big trouble.
My copy of this book has many of the pages dog-eared, for quick re-reads. Only for entertanment purposes only. (But I am ready to act if I have to.)

This is an excellent book with a compelling story - unique, original and full of irony. It's about an American citizen who was forced to fight for an enemy during World War II--and then became a prisoner of war. The theme is like that of Angela's Ashes, in that it recounts hardships that most of us can't imagine enduring. The writing is straightforward and honest, and paints a fascinating picture about another time. It's a page-turner until its happy end.
An unusual, gripping story.......2005-01-20
Everyone's personal story is interesting, but this story is one of a kind. A true account, it's full of irony from beginning to end. The protagonist, an American citizen, is forced to fight against his own country in a world war. He's captured by the Allies and spends seven years in p.o.w. camps. Finally he returns to America on "the best day of his life." A great read!

But what is the solution?.......2001-08-15
A story that many could relate to, a tale of school bullying and the restrictions of the conventional school system nearly driving a young man over the edge. For anyone who has ever wondering what could have possibly lead those two young boys to go on that murderous rampage at Columbine High School.
The book actually opens with an account of that very incident, and then goes onto track Jack's progress throughout primary and high school. The tale, though having occasional glimpses of happiness, ultimately ends with a boy struck down by depression and nearly homicidal with rage at his attackers.
The only criticism that I could make of the book is to say that, while documented without remarkable detail the many problems of conventional schooling, it fails to provide a solution to the many problems.
Jack ackknowledges many of his own faults, and how teachers ultimately went about solving these faults in the wrong way, but fails to say what SHOULD have been done. Or what should be done in the future? The prospect of alternative schooling is raised, but needed to be discussed in future detail I felt.
Otherwise, it was an absorbing read, well worth the time and highly reccommended.
