Book Description
"Ursula" (original French title "Ursule Mirouet," 1842) forms one part of "Scenes from Provincial Life," a series of novels-whose other major work is "Eugenie Grandet"-examining manners and morals in the French provinces. --- Among all the novels of Honore de Balzac (1799-1850), none depicts so penetratingly the small-mindedness, avarice, and envy of the provincial lower middle classes. In "Ursula", no limitations based on morality or decency will hold these people back in their effort to acquire wealth and influence. --- Along with Stendhal, Balzac is the most important French novelist of the first half of the nineteenth century, and a founder of the realistic novel in Europe. His principal work is the unfinished cycle "The Human Comedy" (French: "La Comedie Humaine," which includes "Scenes from Provincial Life"), in which he attempted, in more than 80 volumes, to depict the society of his time in its entirety.
Download Description
Entering Nemours by the road to Paris, we cross the canal du Loing, the steep banks of which serve the double purpose of ramparts to the fields and of picturesque promenades for the inhabitants of that pretty little town. Since 1830 several houses had unfortunately been built on the farther side of the bridge. If this sort of suburb increases, the place will lose its present aspect of graceful originality.

Unusual (religious) Balzac.......2006-11-10
I really enjoyed this novel, even though (or because?) Balzac shows himself here from a very religious side, which is usually not his thing. I highly recommend this book to all Balzac fans.

In many ways, Season of Mists is the pinnacle of the Sandman experience. After a brief intermission of four short stories (collected as Dream Country) Gaiman continued the story of the Dream King that he began in the first two volumes. Here in volume 4, we find out about the rest of Dream's Endless family (Desire, Despair, Destiny, Delirium, Death, and a seventh missing sibling). We find out the story behind Nada, Dream's first love, whom we met only in passing during Dream's visit to hell in the first book. When Dream goes back to hell to resolve unfinished business with Nada, he finds her missing along with all of the other dead souls. The answer to this mystery lies in Lucifer's most uncharacteristic decision--a delicious surprise.
There is something grandiose about this story, in which each chapter ends with such suspense and drive to read the next. This book is best summed up by a toast taken from the second chapter: "To absent friends, lost loves, old gods, and the season of mists; and may each and every one of us always give the devil his due." --Jim Pascoe

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Spurred by the three Fates, Destiny calls a meeting of the Endless. This ends in Dream taking crud for getting pissed at an ex-girlfriend and sending her to Hell.
Spurred by the three Fates, Destiny calls a meeting of the Endless. This ends in Dream taking crap for getting pissed at an ex-girlfriend and sending her to Hell.
His older sister tells him off, so he goes to rescue her, knowing that Lucifer is likely to slay him. A bit nastier than that though, Lucifer abandons Hell and gives it to him, instead, without the old girlfriend.
Dream has to deal with all the mythologies that want this funky piece of supernatural real estate, while Lucifer gets to go and be a beach slacker.
I always suspected Thor had no manners . . ........2007-07-19
As everyone knows who reads his stuff, Gaiman is as original as. In this installment, the Lord of Dreams (one of the Endless, all of whom begin with a "D") goes to Hell prepared to do battle with Lucifer in order to obtain the release of an ex-lover he condemned there some ten thousand years ago. But Lucifer surprises him by evicting everyone from the underworld, shutting the place down, locking it up tight, and handing the Dreamer the key. What happens in a Creation with no functioning Hell? For one thing, the dead come back (not "to life" -- just back). For another, a great many deities from an assortment of pantheons, not to mention the evicted demonic tormentors, want to get their hands on the vacant property for their own reasons. As I said: Extremely original. And very well worked out, too. Another strong hit from a true Big Leaguer.
Gaiman at his best.......2007-04-02
For a short read, each episode is superbly written. Gaiman is the best of his genre.
A turning point in the Sandman saga........2007-01-16
After reading all of the Sandman collections, "Season of Mists" is with out a doubt my favorite.(it's also the first one I read) "Season of Mists" begins with a family meeting between Sandman's family "The Endless". During this meeting Sandman's older brother, Destiny announces that he has recently been visited by the fates. He says that the fates told him that "Something IMPORTANT will happen. Something that sparks a chain of events, causing much change and upheaval" Sandman's sister death then asks "And what is that occasion?" Destiny simply answers "THIS meeting that is all. The rest is up to you" After these statements Destiny's prophecy quickly unfolds when the family sits down to dinner. Sandman's sister, Desire attacks Sandman by opening an old personal wound, his past love life. If you read the books prior to "Season" you'll discover that Sandman sentenced is old flame, Nada (a formed African queen) to the tourments of hell because she refused to give up her mortal life to be his queen. Insulted by Destiny, Sandman storms off to sulk outside on the balcony. Death later comes out to give Sandman a royal tongue lashing (one of her shinning moments in the seires)and tells him that what he did to Nada was selfish and wrong. Sandman soon realizes that is big sister is right and he sets off to free his former love. Sandman and Lucifer(the lord of hell) have some bad blood(established in prior chapters) and when Lucifer is informed that Sandman is comming to his realm, he says that it is a day that they will both remember. When Sandman arrives in hell he is surpized to find the place empty. Lucifer soon greets Sandman to tell him that he has quit his job, let every soul free, and has decided to give the key for the gates to Sandman. This is where the true conflict of 'Seaons" starts. What is Sandman to do with this new realm? and with all of hell's souls now free, Where is Nada? Sandman soon finds that his troubles have only begun when gods and godesses of new and old flood his realm to lobby for posession of the key to hell. Who will Sandman choose and how will he save Nada when a powerful demon holds her for ransom? "Seasons of Mists" is the best written and most exciting chapter in the Sandman collection and one of the best graphic novels I've ever read. If you're a Sandman fan you MUST read this book. read it!
I walked in Destiny's Garden..........2006-11-05
Highly disappointed with "Dream Country", I found myself a bit hesitant about opening the pages to this next chapter in possibly the most imaginative fictional character ever created. "Preludes & Nocturnes" made me salivate for more of Gaiman's creation, while "The Doll's House" set the foundation for future stories and possible interludes, but when it came to "Dream Country" I found myself taking several huge steps back. It followed a different beat, the characters were nowhere to be seen, and it felt like a colorful collection of short, un-compelling stories. I was hurt, and it took me quite a bit of time to open Gaiman's next chapter, but not to worry, my fears ended as I started to read the first few frames ... Gaiman was back, and no door was going to be closed for this next collection entitled, "Season of Mists"!
Gaiman has this unique ability to bring worlds of near non-parallel existence together in a way that we could never imagine. His darkness is back from the opening page when we meet one of his brothers - Destiny. What is great about this opening is that fans of Gaiman's previous chapters will instantly have satisfaction in knowing that the cold spell known as "Dream Country" is over, and we are pulled back into Dream's world. Gaiman re-introduces us to our heroine through his family, by introducing us to his sisters and brothers. While we do not know the purpose of the meeting, we see how the family (perhaps not unlike your own family) interact and co-exist. Like a glass of aged wine, the story progresses with comfort and ease, with Gaiman never quite giving us answers only leading us further down his darkened road. We see humility with our Master of Sleep, Sandman, when he is reminded of a past love that he sentenced to Hell ten thousand years ago. He wants her back, and due to the meeting (thanks to Destiny), he decides to get her back. Nearly reminiscent of "Preludes & Nocturnes", we head back to Hell, but this time, Lucifer himself has a trick up his sleeve.
Lucifer presents Sandman with the ultimate gift, the Keys of Hell, and it will be his decision on what to do with the "gift". What creates the meaty center of this epic tale are what choices the Sandman is presented with by each one of the possible suitors looking to inherit the keys to the almighty Kingdom. Gaiman intricately weaves different Gods from different myths and stories to give us such a vast universe of truths and legend. Gaiman grows the small world we began with into something extraordinary, a world with more open doors than one could ever imagine. We, the readers, are given hints towards the future, as to the strange occurrence of Dream's missing brother, the troubled love between him and Nada, as well as the angels that are determined to change Hell. Loki is even traded for a favor that I am sure Gaiman will explore later.
"Season of Mists" rebirths the excitement that was originally developed in the first two collections that introduced us to Dream. These stories are dark, disturbing, challenging, and utterly fantastical. There is an amazing blend (of which only Gaiman could create) of imagination, creativity, fantasy, and honesty within these stories that immediately pulled this skeptical reader back from the "Dream Country" void. The images are crisp, vibrant, and completely within the realm of this series - for those that couldn't enjoy "Dream Country", "Season of Mists" will bring you back to the world that you loved. Gaiman and his collection of illustrators bring us back to the world that we loved and missed with the last collection. The disturbing truth of Hell, the infinite life of Dream's family, as well as the colliding worlds around that all pine for a track of land to call their own. This collection opened a whole new world to the series, demonstrating that there is a world outside of our own that may have magic, but the undertones are very similar to ours. Sibling rivalry coupled with competitive land developers are just a few of the channels that Gaiman bring to us in "Season of Mists".
I haven't mentioned this in my other reviews yet, but I have to with this collection because it became more obvious to me as I read and saw Dream in each of the stories. I am an enormous fan of what Gaiman has chosen to do with this character - he has given Dream a constantly changing face. What I mean is that Gaiman always has new artists creating his work, thus providing us this true feeling of being in a dream where nothing remains the same. I love to see other's thoughts on what Dream may look like, and while we revert back to the "original" form to demonstrate consistency, it is these subtle changes that make these stories more enjoyable each time you turn the page. The Sandman may be only one person, but he wears many eccentric faces.
Overall, for those that felt that Gaiman fell off his stride in "Dream Country", you will not be disappointed with this outing. We go further into the mind of Gaiman to see his demons, his Gods, and his darkly religious undertones. What I loved about this collection is that while there is this idea of religion, Gaiman seems to bring it to us in all different shapes and sizes. There are Gods, but he skittles around the idea of one larger entity. I loved the idea of "Chaos" and "Order", and the shapes that they chose to take. I deeply enjoyed the poetic ending that seemed to bring purpose to it all - it seemed that Destiny did make an impact, even with just one small event. "Season of Mists" easily ranks as my second favorite in this series. While I do believe that there isn't one that could quite match the veracity of "Preludes and Nocturnes", this one comes very close. For anyone that wants to explore the world of Dream, I would use this as a reference due to the humanity of his character in these stories. He has a conflict, and it is how he chooses to deal with the issues that make him purely Gaiman. I was impressed from page one!

Return of the Jerico.......2007-10-01
Book 2 of the Kal Jerico adventures picks up shortly after 'Blood Royal' ends. There's a number of references to the events of that book but little of it has to deal with this story's plot. Kal, a mix of Han Solo and Mad Max, squanders the last bounty he collected by unfortunate gambling which puts him in serious debt to information broker and master spy Nemo. He's told to bring in Jobe Francks, a vision-haunted prophet. In his way is Cardinal Crimson, an acid bathed Redemtionist fanatic. The story breaks off into several sub stories dealing with Amazonian Yolanda and sidekick Scabbs who really comes into his own in this book. Really this book is more focused towards Yolanda and Scabbs with Jerico thrown in as the back up but it's still an enjoyable book for entertainment value. It's not a deeply moral novel and it's not meant to be, it's a quick action-filled story taking place in the setting of Necromunda. The end chapter is pretty much the clincher to the third book.
Fun But Not Polished.......2006-11-18
Will McDermott's latest effort in Games Workshop's 40K and Necromunda universe, and his second Kal Jerico tale, is a fairly standard action (mis)adventure following the brash and spontaneous bounty hunter Jericho, his scavvy sidekick Scabbs, and his voluptuous ex-Escher partner Yolanda. The supporting cast includes the mysterious crime boss Nemo, the uber-fanatical Cardinal Crimson of the title, and vision-touched Jobe Francks.
The novel brings to mind a combination of the Pink Panther and a B-Grade action film, and doesn't have pretensions beyond simple entertainment. The characters, or perhaps caricatures is a better word, have been firmly established in prior works, both comics and M. McDermott's first Jerico novel, Blood Royal, and they don't deviate from their assigned roles. The villains and allies fall into similar, simple stereotypical roles: Nemo is the spider at the center of the web; Crimson is the fiery orator with skeletons in the closet; and Francks is the visionary shaman.
The plot is predictable, the characters limited in their depth and motivations, and the plot applied with no small amount of force, but somehow you don't mind as much since it never pretends to be more. One significant problem is the editing: he is confused with she in one instance, and in another a character's name is completely botched.
In short: Jerico fans will enjoy, 40K readers should be mildly entertained if they're not too picky, and general sci-fi readers will only have fun if they're looking for an "airport novel."

Book Description
Dr. Tillich shows here that in spite of the contrast between philosophical and biblical language, it is neither necessary nor possible to separate them from each other. On the contrary, all the symbols used in biblical religion drive inescapably toward the philosophical quest for being. An important statement of a great theologian's position, this book presents an eloquent plea for the essential function of philosophy in religious thought.
Customer Reviews:
Ultimate Reality.......2004-12-09
Paul say's it best in the first chapter of this book..."Religion is a function of the human mind, it is a futile attempt to reach God, it moves from man toward God, while revelation moves from God to man and it's first work is to confound man's religious aspirations."
This sums up the essence of Paul Tillich and his own personal search for Ultimate Reality...but there is so much more!
Philosophy and religion together..........2004-01-15
This small work of Tillich's is one of his later publications; deriving from a lecture series in the 1950s, it shows in very short order the combination of Tillich's philosophical and psychological ideas coupled with his view on the authority of biblical scripture in a Christian context.
Tillich states that if humans enter the levels of personal existence which have been rediscovered by depth psychology, there is a collective unconscious in which we participate. This draws together all of our ancestors. Remember here that Tillich speaks in other contexts of the Ground of Being, so ideas such as this one make a consistent sense.
Tillich continues to be criticised for the philosophical language he uses, how radical a departure it seems to a more scripturally-based faith (students in my classes perennially complain of this). However, Tillich takes on the challenge here to look at this contrast in language, arguing that in fact it is impossible to separate out the language and meaning of philosophy from the imagery contained in the biblical texts.
Tillich's overarching idea through his entire body of work is to reconstitute the importance of theology and faith into a culture, academic and secular, who have been drawn away by seemingly more objective, rational enterprises such as science. The Enlightenment project of rationalism over all led to the questioning of orthodoxy -- Tillich maintains the questioning, but draws back in the ideas of God and biblical witness to religion in the terms of the modern academy. Nowhere is that project more clear than in this text.
Tillich means for the connection between biblical religion and philosophy to connect at a personal level. He states that from pimitive religion to the present time, religions have had a personalistic level at the deepest heart of the experience. 'Whenever the holy is experienced, the person-to-person character of this experience is obvious.' However, this changes when considering the Ground of Being, and Being Itself. As Tillich states, when we talk, it is to somebody, but we participate in something. This distinction becomes key to Tillich's overall analysis.
In the last chapters, Tillich examines different ideas of ontology versus the subjective and objective sides of biblical religion. Tillich's final paragraph encapsulates a classic sense of Tillichian analysis -- faith comprises both itself and its negation. Tillich clearly states that there is no particular philosophical framework necessary for salvation -- neither Plato nor Aristotle, neither Kant nor Hegel, and so forth -- but that there is an ontological question implied. The God of the philosophers is the same as the God of the bible (Tillich proclaims, contradicting Pascal).
Many Christians are still unconvinced of the value or necessity of philosophy in religious thinking; indeed, many are positively suspicious. Tillich's work helps to explain the value of connecting the two, even if one does not draw the same conclusions. This is a very short text (a mere 85 pages) that can be read most likely in a single sitting, and represents a good introduction or a good refresher to some key Tillichian ideas.
It is a very beauty work........1999-05-26
This book is great. when we read the book, we find the new possibility. But It is not perfect. He said, Christianity is not seperated from contemporary phiiosophy. Therefore We who believe in God can expoud to the phiiosopher who deny God severely. I respect him to try speaking the the phiiosopher .You,too may assent.

Book Description
In analyzing the intertextuality between the Genesis and Johannine Prologues, Dr. Lioy maintains that both passages utilize polemical theology to refute distorted views of ultimate reality. Furthermore, he theorizes that the author of the Johannine Prologue deliberately reflected the structure and themes found in the Genesis Prologue to emphasize that the God-man, Jesus Christ, created all things and is a new (spiritual) beginning for all who believe in Him. Ultimate reality is found through faith in the Son.

Book Description
Written as a letter from a Zimbabwean mother to her daughter, a student at Harvard, J. Nozipo Maraire evokes the moving story of a mother reaching out to her daughter to share the lessons life has taught her and bring the two closer than ever before. Interweaving history and memories, disappointments and dreams, Zenzele tells the tales of Zimbabwe's struggle for independence and the men and women who shaped it: Zenzele's father, an outspoken activist lawyer; her aunt, a schoolteacher by day and secret guerrilla fighter by night; and her cousin, a maid and a spy.
Rich with insight, history, and philosophy, Zenzele is a powerful and compelling story that is both revolutionary and revelatory--the story of one life that poignantly speaks of all lives.

A Must Read For Young African Women.......2007-03-08
This book is definitely one of my top five favorite books. As a daughter of an African mother I could relate to many of the lessons that Shiri taught her daughter, Zenzele. However through her narrative method of telling the story, I felt as if I learned so much more. I felt comforted by her words and this is a book I will most definitely find myself referencing throughout the rest of my life. From love, relationships, education, career choices, everything that young women face is addressed in this book. I highly recommend it. I absolutely LOVED it!
Recommended, but with flaws.......2006-09-23
I enjoyed reading this book very much- it made me think about various issues differently than I had before and that alone makes it worthwhile. I would highly recommend that anyone read it. However, there are some flaws. First, this is fiction, but I think there is a real possibility that readers will take it as non-fiction, due to its presentation. And many of the stories in the book are so extreme as to be unbelievable. For example, I'm sure the cousin that goes abroad to study and comes back as a stereotypical Englishman, complete with a monocle and walks around the bush in a 3-piece wool suit and pipe. Has anyone in the past 100 years worn a monocle? And I just felt like that entire segment was so unsubtle it took away from the message. Also, one of the most interesting points in the book to me related to the "brain drain" in many poor countries, where the intelligent and ambitious leave to study/work abroad, perpetuating the cycle of poverty in their own countries. And the mother in the book strongly criticized those Africans who stay abroad, going so far as to say they have "fall[en] from cultural grace... succumbed to moral anarchy and glittering materialism." (p.69). Yet the author herself (a native Zimbabwean I believe) lives in Connecticut!!! Isn't she the very person she criticized (through her protaganist) so strongly? Anyway, I thought the message of the book and the various authentic details were great, just thought parts of it were implausible.
Recollections and remembrances.......2005-12-25
This was the third required text for a class I took this past semester, Introduction to African Studies. The novel is written as a letter from an ailing mother to her daughter, Zenzele, who is studying abroad at Harvard University. In each chapter, Amai Zenzele recalls past experiences and relates them to a message or moral for her daughter. In regard to holding true to her identity as an African woman, Amai Zenzele remembers a cousin who went to medical school abroad and only returned when his mother was on her deathbed. She recalls her first love - the man who made her hands tremble - and her first meeting with her husband Baba va Zenzele - the man who made her hands steady. To me, the most interesting stories in the book were those connected with Zimbabwe's history and its struggle for indepedence. Stories about Amai Zenzele's cousin, who worked as a spy in the house of a Rhodesian commander, illustrate the extent of racism and ignorance that black Africans faced. The narrative is specific yet universal - although Amai Zenzele imparts certain lessons to her daughter that would only be applicable for a young Zimbabwean woman abroad, she also covers areas which are present in all mother-daughter relationships. Five stars for writing, four and a half for enjoyment.
Another perspective.......2005-09-26
It's always good for an American to get another perspective on African culture, and this is a very nicely written book that does just that. Of course, it doesn't give the whole picture (no book ever could). But through its use of storytelling, you get a snapshot of a particular corner of Zimbabwe, and it's very interesting. Liked it.
Wonderful........2004-06-15
I simply loved it - to say the least. Every word was just so delicious to read. It's one of those books you just can't put down once you start. It goes deep inside Rhodesia (present-day Zimbabwe) and narrates the political and cultural struggles of everyday Zimbabweans. This lady makes me proud to say my own name. She's an excellent writer and I am waiting for her to publish her next work soon. This book is almost like an emblem to all expatriates, which is no wonder that it was translated to so may languages. The main plot and story line is just universal, although the setting was African. I could certainly relate to everything. It also shows that we still do not have the political, economic, and cultural independance that we thought would come naturally after "independance". Her style of writing is like a mixture or medley of all my best authors...so you can imagine why it was a good read for me. Great job indeed!

Mary Matalin, the media savvy Republican strategist for two Bushes and one Cheney, switches to mama bear mode in a series of letters intended as a legacy for her two preteen daughters. Her advice reflects on formative experiences--losing her mother at age 26, working in the White House, marrying a soul mate from another political planet (high profile Democrat James Carville), and surviving Hurricane Isabel. Each letter's theme is reflected in her greeting. For example, "Dear hormone handmaidens" gives equal time to menses and menopause," Dear lovelies" focuses on how not to become a dieter or fashion victim and "Dear unfortunate carriers of the Matalin DNA," acknowledges anxiety (hers and theirs). Matalin is at her best when translating family or political lessons in her own terms including her mother's quiet faith, her brother Stevie's gallant response to his bicycle accident and the climate of loyalty in Bush's White House. Her love for her daughters is wonderfully ferocious and funny--full of mom sound bites. After promising not to spy or pry she warns: "But from a distance, I'll be keeping track of you like a rat on a cheeto."
Matalin's engaging and wise counsel alternates with advice flawed by her insistence on gender typecasting and the stale idea that "what defines us is ungettable by the other sex." This problem is magnified by the grating coarseness of her view of men. When Matalin tells her daughters, "Boys would screw a snake if it would lay still long enough," readers may wonder whether she intended these letters as keepsake for her daughters--or as a best seller for a wider audience. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
In Letters to My Daughters, famed political consultant and TV personality Mary Matalin shares the moral, ethical, and occasionally comic life lessons gleaned from her mother's experiences and her own. These intimate, personal letters range from the spiritual to the practical, from giving life to accepting death, from civic to personal responsibility, from looking and feeling good to dealing with those pesky boys, and more.
Here's a sampling of the mother wisdom found in these pages:
Crying is not a weakness; it's cathartic and cleansing. People who live life with the fullest commitment tend to cry a lot. It's a healthy expression of deep emotions. I don't like or trust people who don't or can't cry.
When I tell you I understand what you're going through, it's not just because I remember what it felt like to be a teenage girl whose body is being hijacked by hormones against her will. It's because I'm a fifty-something whose body is being hijacked by hormones against her will at this very moment. And if you don't believe me, just ask your father.
I believe in my heart of hearts that a life without faith is unanchored and unfulfilling. Without it, you're just wandering in the desert. You experience deeply that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts -- and the singing is damn good.
Ma had a complex philosophy of sex, which I heard almost every day from age ten. "Boys would screw a snake if it would lay still long enough." Let's flash forward forty years and allow your mother to give you a twenty-first-century take on boys and S-E-X: "Boys would screw a snake if it would lay still long enough."...And the men in Washington think that's a compliment.
A deep sense of loyalty can help you overcome almost any bump in the road. The disloyal may advantage themselves in some work situations, but their gains will be temporary, fleeting. They will fail their institutions, their colleagues, and worst of all, themselves.
Filled with warmth, common sense, a belief in the values that keep families strong, and her trademark sense of humor, Mary Matalin's letters will inspire, guide, entertain, and inform. They're the perfect companion for any mother looking for a smart, sensible fellow traveler on the road to raising good daughters.

A bit Gloria Steinem, a bit Erma Bombeck.......2005-09-27
I enjoyed this book immensely (I did the audio version) although I raised only sons (3) and had to wait many years to get a girl (my granddaughter.) Matalin does an admirable job of using humor and common sense in her individual "letters" to her daughters on such subjects as 10 or 15 minute segment on such subjects as "boys, bad hair days, PMS/menopause, politics", etc. I plan to share much of this information with my granddaughter. The audio book is ideal for listening to in the car where kids are a captive audience, right? You can listen to one of the "letters," then turn it off and use it to launch a discussion of that subject with your girl (or boy.) Throughout the letters, Matalin pretty much avoids taking a political stance one way or the other, and she was a lot funnier and more sensible than I had expected.
Touching and wise.......2005-03-29
I do not have any children of my own, but plan to buy copies of this book for ALL my friends' daughters. Matalin's advice is humorous and humane. It is a compendium of her life lessons as well as maternal advice handed down through the generations in her family. Contrary to what some may expect from the author, the book is no doctrinaire tome espousing a particular political philosophy, but the advice of a warm and wise mother.
Matalin covers all topics of interest to young girls (and their moms) including friendship, academic issues, self esteem, dealing with mean girls and relating to boys. She is firm in her convictions without being overbearing or patronizing. She comes across empathic to teenage sentiments and concerns without advocating the "do whatever feels good" party line of many a parent who thinks themselves au courant. I have observed that teenagers (with their unsure sense of self) actually appreciate behavior guidelines from their parents but can easily become resentful when the strictures are too harsh. Admittedly, this is a delicate balance to achieve and Matalin does an admirable job of walking the tightrope.
Handbook for raising children of either sex.......2004-07-28
This audio book was not something I would have picked out myself. It was sent to me by a girlfriend so I took the time to listen. I have heard my husband talk about this "politically opposite" husband and wife team many times and admired their ability to make a life together when they work on such opposite sides of the political fence.
Listening to this compilation of thoughts and desires from Mary Matalin to her daughters brought back things my mother try to pound into my head as a teenager. From the bittersweet happenings in a teenager's life to the everyday down-to-earth, get-it-right thoughts on life, these letters provides the basics every child needs to grown up right. They tell about the fears of being a mother and the hopes to "get it right" for your child. They provide insights into the fact that just because a mother is now over 21, she can and does remember what it was like to be 8 or 10 or 16.
Ms Matalin tells about her own family background and some of their hopes, dreams and family tragedies. She shares with the listener some of those wonderful growing up stories that happen in every family and the same stories that are told and retold and handed down through the generations. If you are looking for a good way to talk to your daughters - or sons for that matter - grab a copy of this audio book and go for it.
First chapter made me cry.......2004-05-03
Mary's book touched me deeply because like her, I lost my mother before I got married and had a child (a daughter). Like her, I read everything I could get my hands on, from Spock to Sears, but nothing filled the huge void created by my mother's untimely death at 52 (Matalin's died at 50). While her specific advice to her girls may not be earthshattering in its originality, it serves as a poignant reminder to all of us parents that we just might not be around to tell our kids what we'd want them to hear from us first. I will use this book as a jumping off point for letters to my own baby girl. In this busy world we live in, it's far too easy to think we'll get around to teaching our kids important life-lessons "when the time comes," but before we know it, they're grown and all-too-often, our busy lives have gotten in the way of those all-too-important conversations. If you have a daughter, of any age, read this book. A great mother's day gift too!
worth reading, but could go deeper.......2004-05-02
This is a fine book as far as it goes. As a parent who knows that there are no easy answers, I appreciate the fact that she doesn't give a toolkit or a formula for childraising or growing up. But there is a book out there with a surprisingly parallel title, Letters to My Son, by Kent Nerburn, that is a truly brilliant work that deserves to be read along side this or any other parenting book. I have daughters as well as a son. I would give both these books to my children of both genders. Don't be seduced by Matalin's high profile. There are other authors out there who have as much to say. Give Matalin her due; she's done a good job. But if you want more wisdom and less psychology, get Nerburn's book as well.
Book Description
The narrator of Letters to My Mother is a young Afro-Cuban girl who, when her mother dies, must live with her aunt and cousins. Dependent on them and their goodwill, she’s deeply wounded by their taunts about how dark her skin is and their attacks on her behavior in general, including her choice not to straighten her hair. Her life is often miserable as she must endure casual racial prejudice and mistreatment from those around her. To keep her mother alive somehow, and to remember that she was once unconditionally loved, she writes letters telling “Mami” what she is suffering and feeling. Over the course of this powerful and moving novel composed of these letters, the heroine comes of age. Is her inner strength sufficient to overcome her pain and the bigotry of the people in her life?
Letters to My Mother was attacked in some quarters for exposing the problem of racism in contemporary Cuban society, but it went on to win major awards.

Required reading for Queen Victoria "fans".......2004-08-04
I love these letters (between Queen Victoria & her eldest Hessian granddaughter, another Victoria). The Queen was full of good advice & her loving concern for her motherless Hessian grandchildren is so evident...the letters concerning Princess Alix's marriage are so poignant (she became the last Empress of Russia). These letters also help those with a scholarly interest in Queen Victoria & the British Royal family know more about the backgrounds of the various members of the family. But they are also just plain good reading, hard to put down!

Book Description
Amazing Grace transformed John Newton from a wretched sea captain of slave ships to a passionate pas-tor and hymn writer. Grace further equipped Newton, who was childless, to become a tender, loving, and compassionate father. He adopted his 2 orphaned nieces Elizabeth and Eliza. Newton took no courses in parenting, nor did he have the opportunity to read the countless volumes of self help books on child rearing that grace bookstore shelves today. He wholly relied on the guidance of his heavenly Father. Through prayer and the reading of the Bible, he discipled his daughters in the love and counsel of the Lord. It is clearly evident in the compilation of these letters and memoirs to his daughters that he embraced the words of 3 John:4 "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth." Newton's godly mother faithfully instructed him in the truth through prayer and the reading of the Scriptures. She died when he was only six years of age and left him to be raised by his irreligious father. What joy and thanksgiving would fill her heart to know that the seeds of truth that she sewed in the life of her young son grew and blossomed. Newton accepted God's gift of salvation as an adult and further shared this gift with his own children.

Words of Wisdom for Everyone!.......2006-02-02
The words from Amazing Grace have touched and blessed thousands of people for many years. We have all heard John Newton's story of his life from slave ships to salvation. What many people don't know, is that he was also the adopted father of two of his nieces. That same spiritual insight which penned the words of Amazing Grace, penned many letters to his daughters. Jody Moreen has compiled and edited those letters into a convenient slim-line book, "Letters to my Adopted Daughters." John Newton's timeless love and gentle "words of wisdom" for his daughters shines through on every page. Whether you are a part of the adoption triad, or a Christian looking for guidance, you will find it in these inspirational pages. A definite "must read."
Wonderful Counseling in this book...........2005-06-21
Jody Moreen's find and sharing of these letters originally written by John Newton, author of "Amazing Grace," is a wonderful and enjoyable read. It shows us how we miss so much in help and teachings to our own children, by not writing letters such as Mr. Newton did, and how we miss passing on Christian values and wisdom to our children.
This book is a wonderful gift to those family and friends in our lives. It is especially a wonderful gift for a father to give his daughter, adopted or not.
