In Tim Gautreaux's pitch-perfect portraits of rural Louisiana life, there is no force stronger than a good Cajun-style chicken stew--except, perhaps, the vagaries of old age. Welding with Children has more than its fair share of the latter, beginning with the funny and moving title story, in which a grandfather drives around the four offspring of his four single daughters using what neighbors unkindly call "the bastardmobile." Raised on a steady diet of Icees and daytime talk TV, Bruton's grandkids finally inspire a housecleaning of truly spiritual dimensions, proving the adage that "everything worth doing hurts like hell." Other stories follow a hard-drinking priest sent on a strange errand of automotive atonement, a manic-depressive Creole princess playing cocktail piano in a motel lounge, and a one-armed feminist hitchhiker on a quest for academic tenure:
When a search committee member told me they'd received an application from a gay black female double amputee from Ghana, I reminded the committee that part of my childhood was spent in Mexico, and then I played my last card and came out as a lesbian.... But it did no good. The college found someone more specialized, foreign, and incomplete than I could ever be.
Fair enough. But while most of these tales rely on a certain tried-and-true Southern eccentricity to work their magic, two stories point to what Gautreaux can do when he seeks to do more than just charm. In "Sorry Blood," another old man loses his way--mentally and physically--in a Wal-Mart parking lot. An opportunistic con man poses as his son, then puts the kidnapped "Ted Williams" to work digging a ditch in the sun. Scary, yes, but not as scary as the old man's struggle to hold on to his memory: "This is an egg. What am I?" In the brief and powerful "Rodeo Parole," four inmates play a dangerous waiting game with an enraged bull, spurred on by the knowledge that a rodeo victory means scoring points with the parole board. The bull, after all, is no more or less than their fates, "like a judge saying something and you can't stop it or change it." Gracefully written and spiced with vivid regional detail, these are tales by a master storyteller who's not afraid to blend some darkness into his fictional roux. --Mary Park

Book Description

A master storyteller's triumphant, moving collection about lost souls, found love, and rediscovered traditionTim Gautreaux returns to the form that won him his first fans, with tales of family, sin, and redemption: from a man who realizes his grandchildren are growing up without any sense of right or wrong, and he's to blame; to a camera repairman who uncovers a young woman's secret in the undeveloped film she brings him; to a one-armed hitch-hiker who changes the life of the man who gives her a ride. Each one a small miracle of storytelling and compassion, these stories are a joyous confirmation of Tim Gautreaux's rare and generous talent.

A friend handed me a tattered copy yesterday. I finished this afternoon. It was superb. Rarely have a read a collection this compelling. Buy it, read it, and pass it on.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite collection of short stories.......2006-01-02

I read this book upon the recommendation of a clerk at Books Along the Teche in New Iberia, LA. J.L. Burke may be New Iberia's favorite son, but Tim Gautreaux offers much more to the reader. His dialogue and characters ring authentic. Each story is one you are glad to read, and "Easy Pickings" is a story you will remember with a smile and a chuckle for the rest of your life.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2003-09-28

I just finished reading this book, and could start all over again. Gatreaux has a wonderful way of crafting a story with believable people. No matter where the reader is from, because of his character descriptions, it is easy to identify with these folks from Louisiana. Gatreaux's short stories evoked all kinds of emotions, but there were many places where I simply laughed out loud. The best thing about this book, is the ability of the author to depict flawed characters living flawed lives, who nonetheless experience redemption in various ways. I will be looking for more books by this talented writer.

5 out of 5 stars Welding with Children.......2003-09-02

This second collection of short stories from Tim Gautreaux is, perhaps, even better than the first. Of course, if you look inside the book and see who published the individual stories, it's obvious that they must be good; The New Yorker, Atlantic, and Esquire are not noted for publishing bad fiction.

While these are fiction, the stories ring so true to life and the lives of the characters, that we can all see ourselves in someone in this collection. Most of Gautreaux's stories have a touch of humor, but all show the depth of character that draws readers into the stories.

Anyone who reads these stories and enjoys them, should also read his novels. You'll find that same voice and an author you can trust, who will not betray your empathy for his characters.

5 out of 5 stars STORIES THAT GET TO THE HEART OF PEOPLE..........2002-12-11

Tim Gautreaux's writing is simply amazingly good. His characters are sublimely human, and he has a knack for finding the good in all of them - even those who might be a bit unsavory. He places them in situations that are ordinary and unique at the same time - and in those situations he finds ways to reveal things to us that allow us to learn more about ourselves. The characters learn about themselves as well, and this is a treasure to observe. The stories here deal with joy and sorrow and all of the areas in between. The people here are struggling to come to grips with their own families, with their work, with the people around them - and with the world in which they live.

In the title piece, a man attempts to assert more of a guiding influence on his grandchildren, and in the process winds up changing several aspects of his own life as well. His trials in striving to accomplish a task given him by his wife, while sitting with his grandchildren at the same time, is presented with some of the most genuine humor I've read in a while - but it's a gentle humor, and it never belittles the characters or the situation (and this finely-tuned humor is used to good effect in several of these stories, even the more `serious' ones.

`Misuse of light' is a moving portrait of a man who works in a camera shop learning about the lives of his customers through the small areas where their lives intersect with his. When someone sells a camera to his shop and he finds a roll of film in it, he develops it in order to get a glimpse into other lives. Opening this door can, as he learns, have jarring effects - on him as well as on the lives he enters. When he uncovers information that causes pain to the young woman who has sold him the camera, rather than abandoning his `study', he probes a bit further in order to get to a level in this past wherein she can find a bit of peace. It's something that makes the character endearing - it's a story to restore faith. Another story dealing with faith it `Good for the soul', in which a parish priest with a bit of a drinking problem, attempting to do a good deed (against his better judgment), runs afoul of both the law and his community.

`Easy pickings' details a rather inept thief's attempt to take advantage of a solitary elderly woman - rather than being a cakewalk, he finds that he's definitely bitten off more than he can chew. There's a great deal of the above-mentioned gentle humor in this tale - and Gautreaux delivers it with tender respect, never ridiculing his characters. `The piano tuner' is, like `Misuse of light', a finely-crafted work in which one character sets out to help another cope with the world - and does so with no expectations of any sort of reward. It's a good example of how those among us who are a little `different' can find their niche - and a gentle lesson in showing such folks more tolerance.

`Resistance' is another case of one human helping another - in this instance, an elderly man, a widower, sees a need and fills it. The little girl who lives next door is very obviously the victim of an abusive, drunk father. When the neighbor learns that her parents are unable/unwilling to help her with her science project, he takes on the task himself - and the light he creates shines not only into her dark life, but also into his own.

`Sorry blood' and `Sunset in heaven' both deal with aspects of growing old. In the former, an Alzheimer's patient is victimized by one of the lowest low-lifes you're liable to meet (and hope that you don't). In the latter, the plight of an old man similarly afflicted opens the eyes of a middle-aged man to the possibilities in his own life.

`Rodeo parole' is a frightening, surreal look at a desperate attempt by prisoners to be viewed in a more favorable light by the parole board - by making themselves sitting targets for a bull enraged by repeated electric shocks from prison guards. Its few pages explode with action.

My two favorites in this collection are `Dancing with the one-armed gal' and `The Pine Oil Writers Conference'. In the former, a man on the run from (or is it `to') himself meets a woman hitchhiker as he travels west from Louisiana. They're both looking for something - and neither is sure just what, although they think they know - and the `answers' they find aren't the ones they expect. It makes for a very interesting and revealing encounter - both for the characters and the reader. `The Pine Oil Writers Conference' is, for me, the gem of this book. Gautreaux has created the classic `riddle wrapped in an enigma' with this story - an aspiring writer (a minister) attends the conference, hoping to find out if writing fiction is `the thing he does best'. The short excerpt included in this story produced by the character for a conference workshop is so well written than it made me sorry there wasn't more of it.

I've never read anything by Tim Gautreaux before - but you can bet I'll be looking for his other short story collection (SAME PLACE, SAME THINGS) as well as his novel (THE NEXT STEP IN THE DANCE). This little book was a great discovery.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Hilarious background on a major antagonist, detailing the utter and total insanity of their organisation. This is one of the weirdest, most screwed up villains you can imagine. He loses body part after body part, function after function, and has indignity upon indignity heaped upon him and still continues upon his crazed quest and towards his nutjob goals.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar Series.......2007-03-19

The Preacher series is a "must have" for any collector of stories who likes a little extreme in their fantasy. Some of the greatest lines and characters are put forth by the incredible team of Ennis and Dillon. If one suspends disbelief on one's own feelings about God and the devil, one can enjoy lightheartedly this tale of servitude...or something.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely the most action packed Preacher.......2005-12-15

The 6th installement in the 9 volume Preacher series, definitely the most action packed Preacher of them all. Garth Ennis(Punisher, Hellblazer, Hitman) and Steve Dillon(Punisher, Supreme Power:Nighthawk) did a great job, tanks, guns, blood, and violence, what more would you want.

The book starts with an origin story about Starr, telling us about how he got involved with the Grail, and how he took interest in Jesse Custer. Then Starr takes control of the U.S. Army and attepts to capture Jesse Custer and kill the Saint of Killers with the army. Fortunately the Saint of Killers was there doing what he does best, blow things up. Nothing can take that guy down, not machine guns, tanks, not even missiles. Meanwhile, when Jesse falls out of a plane and is presumed dead, Tulip falls into depression and takes refuge in Cassidy. Jesse, somehow survived the fall with only the loss of an eye. He was rescued by an astronaut wannabe called Johnny Wee Wombat. One of the best Preacher stories wirtten by Garth Ennis, showcasing his dark humor(which was superb here in War in the Sun), his bizzare characters and plots, and his ability to write a compelling story.

The art by Steve Dillon was great as usual depicting, in great detail, the faces, expressions, and the graphic violence. After the work Dillon have done in Preacher and the Marvel comic Punisher, also written by Ennis, he has become my favorite artist, his best quality being his abilty to draw faces, and exppressions, it is said that he has never drawn a face twice. The story arc about Starr's origin was not by Dillon, and nothing personal by I just don't really like it, expecially for Preacher.

The most action packed Preacher, one of the best of the series to me. Ennis and Dillon have brought us yet another masterpeice, a must-read if you liked any of the other Preacher books. If you are new to the series, I suggest you read the first volume, Gone to Texas, and see if you like it(I can't imagine why not), if you do, then keep reading until you reach this volume, it's worth it. DO NOT purchase this book or any Preacher book if you can be offended by eccesive violence, gore, extremely bizzare plots, sexual themes, or profanity.

5 out of 5 stars There Goes the Neighbourhood.......2004-08-17

Most welcome in this volume was a first person chronicling of Herr Starr's meteoric rise within the ranks of the Grail - an omnipotent, ubiquitous organization enjoying worldwide political influence (fans of Michael Moore's `Fahrenheit 9/11' may recognize elements of The Carlyle Group at play here). Herr Starr's unique psychological profile is also explored, explaining much of the otherwise bizarre behaviour that surfaced in previous volumes.

To add some Southern spice, Ennis throws in some wonderfully off-kilter characters in the mix: a failed wannabe astronaut with a rather substantial chip on his shoulder, a creepy hillbilly trio living in an abandoned mineshaft with particularly disturbing culinary tastes (and possible knowledge of Jimmy Hoffa's disappearance). And, considering the motley crew of characters that regularly grace the pages of Preacher, I use the adjective `bizarre' fully aware that `normal' in Ennis' world equates to Jerry Springer territory in ours.

Anyways, Ennis is fully back on track here with a captivating storyline that is wonderfully broken up with little subplots. There's a huge revelation at the end of this book that completely changes the dynamic among the `good guys' (and girl) that ought to leave you looking forward to the next book. There's some other - literally- earth-shattering stuff that goes on here, propelling the cataclysmic ending.

Six volumes in, Ennis continues to shock and awe with his unique blend of humour, violence, and pathos. There's really nothing like Preacher out there, and `War in the Sun' further bolsters Ennis' elevated standing in the graphic novel pantheon.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, possibly the best in the series.......2003-03-13

Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon have created another masterpiece with this sixth collected installment of the Preacher series. The beginning is the one shot back story called "One Man's War" and delves into the past of Herr Star as we learn his secrets and his unyielding motivation to get the job done. This explains quite a bit about Herr Star's intentions and you can almost sympathize with him. From that point on we catch up with Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidey as they wind up in the desert along with Herr Star and the entire army thrown into the mix, and the Saint of Killers not far behind. This is undoubtadly the most action packed of the series and contains all of the blood curdling violence and very dark humor that the series is famous for. Ennis' storytelling is great as always, although some of Dillon's art seems to get a bit scratchy towards the end of the book, War in the Sun is still a great read. All in all, this is possibly the best in the Preacher series, and next to Until the End of the World, is my favorite of the series.

Book Description

What did our ancestors dream of when they gazed up at the stars and looked beyond the present? Wildly imaginative but grounded in reasoned scientific speculation, A Journey in Other Worlds races far ahead of the nineteenth century to imagine what life would be like in the year 2000. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Earth is effectively a corporate technocracy, with big businesses using incredible advances in science to improve life on the planet as a whole. Seeking other planets habitable for the growing human population, the spaceship Callisto, powered by an antigravitational force known as apergy, embarks on a momentous tour of the solar system. Jupiter proves to be a wilderness paradise, full of threatening beasts and landscapes of inspired beauty, where the explorers must fight for their lives. Dangers less tangible but equally deadly await the Callisto crew on Saturn, which yields profound secrets about their fate and the ultimate destiny of mankind.

Thoughtful, adventurous, and replete with a dazzling array of futuristic devices, A Journey in Other Worlds is a classic, unforgettable story of utopias and humankind’s restless exploration of the stars.

4 out of 5 stars Compare to Bellamy's "Looking Backward".......2003-12-01

You may want to compare this to Edward Bellamy's "Looking Backward", which was published in the 1890s. Both books looked forward a hundred years to 2000. Each author gave his vision of the future. Astor imbues this book with a somewhat polemical slant. [As indeed did Bellamy in his.] The result is a book that may not be the most gripping of reading by current standards, but which still gives insight into a mindset of that era.

The contrast between the two books is reflected in Astor being a successful inventor. No doubt this gave him a very rosy tinged worldview, unlike Bellamy's socialist leanings. And that is the value of these two books considered as a pair. One uses the dominant value system of its time, the agressive capitalism, and the other speaks forth from the resultant opposite.

Interesting to see Steve Stirling edit this book. He has done good research for his science fiction novels, and perhaps that led him to this, long obscure text.

5 out of 5 stars Can the Church Tell the Truth about Those Who are Different?.......2000-07-28

The subtitle of Alexander and Preston's book is "Claiming God's Grace for Lesbians and Gays." Nevertheless, this is not a book for homosexuals. This is a book that raises important theological and liturgical questions for all of God's people. Reduced to their simplest forms the question are: "DOES the Church tell the truth about those who are different?" and if not, "CAN the Church tell the truth about those who are different?"

Cutting through the psycho-babble and well-intentioned but destructive, liberal, social thinking, Alexander and Preston quickly get to the heart of the matter: (1) some denominations baptize infants and young children, boldly declaring that what matters is not our decision for Jesus, but his decision for us; (2) a growing body of scientific evidence argues for a significant genetic component to homosexuality, but (3) despite the commitment that denominations make in infant baptisms and a growing body of scientific evidence for sexual predispositions, most congregations effectively excommunicate homosexuals. The point is simple: every time the Church chases away an homosexual, we sin.

In the face of our religious hypocracy and failure to keep the promises of infant baptism, Alexander and Preston calmly remind us, "We Were Baptized, Too." This thought-provoking argument demands to be read and discussed within the "straight" Church. Can we tell the truth about those who share our faith, but whose ways of loving are different from our own?

    3 out of 5 stars BrianKate's Review.......2000-06-21

This is a very good book for gay/lesbian people who want to see some positive messages on the subject of religion, which is definitely needed. With all the hatred that masquerades as "God's word" when it comes to homosexuality (even though Jesus himself *never* mentions sexuality or gender identity *at all*, it's about time people started putting loving book which shows gay/lesbian people they don't have to abandon religion. My only complaint is that the authors don't ever mention or include bisexual or transgendered people at all. They just quickly say something to the effect of "we'd like to, but that's beyond the scope of our book." I'd say someone should write another book addressing this, since bi and trans people get the same harassment from so-called "religious" people, but except for that, this is a very good book. I'd recommend it to any gay/lesbian people I know who don't want to give up on religion, since it shows you *can* be gay *and* a Christian.

      4 out of 5 stars A Bible for Collectors!.......1999-08-13

For lovers of T.G. Green's timeless Cornish Kitchen Ware, this book gives interesting information about its history and production. It's a very slim, soft-cover volume and, proportionately, pictures do outweigh the text. However, I have to admit that if there were only pictures to look at that would be enough for me! Atterbury has had access to some of the most comprehensive private collections of Cornish Ware that exist and the photos offer a glimpse into the world of the avid collector. Saying there are more images than text gives the impression that it's only a pretty picture book. Not true! Peter Atterbury has obviously put effort into finding tidbits of history, information on imitators, the other designs T.G. Green produced, Cornish Ware's cultural presence in Britain and insight on its future (yes, there is one!). I love this handy little reference book. It's helped me make up my mind about which pieces to buy and which to leave, and it's feeding my dreams of finding treasures I didn't even know existed before I read the book.

          5 out of 5 stars great inspiration.......2001-05-09

I am not a quilter - yet -, as an artist though, this book offers great inspiration. The bright colors, whimsical style and variation in angels are wonderfull to look at. I love both the look of very traditional patterned quilts and free wheeling apliqued peices Weidman uses. This book gives ideas, insperation and easy to modify patterns to allow your imagination to run free! My stitching and painting work has really changed based on this book and the reminder that you can have fun in your art.

          5 out of 5 stars Blessings.......2000-03-29

3 out of 5 stars Try Thinking of This Like Jane Fonda Joining F.T.A........2000-06-10

I bought this book as a political act, if an attempt to relate on a personal level can be considered political. I was living in Minneapolis at the time and went to a major chain bookstore in the city of Saint Paul to order it, in a reversal of my usual (new wave vs. old hat) stereotypes of those two cities. If anyone considers the cover too shocking to reveal to internet shoppers, be glad that the back cover is not what is shown. Most of the book is about male sexual objects, and the back cover has male thighs forming a V with no attempt to hide what Rilke called "manhood's crest" in a famous poem about an archaic torso of Apollo. (The poem appears in 20 German Poets, translated by Walter Kaufmann, p. 221.) Plate 33 in Andy's "Paintings of the 1970s" has six repetitions of what appears to me to be the display of a fist as a sexual object, given its proximity to what is typical in this book. What helped me most to gain my appreciation for the contents of this book was the text at the beginning, which begins with a direct Andy Warhol quotation, "Sex is So Abstract." Some of the information in the text is extracted from a book by Bob Colacello called "Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close-Up." On the actual quality of the artwork, the text says, "His secret is his profound and enduring aestheticism, . . . burning with a hard, gemlike flame, but veiling this taste in a cool, laconic front of Coke bottles, soup cans," and the bodies in this book. The final page of text before the drawings explains Warhol's use of fingerpainting on Polaroid photographs, which appear to me on Plates 44, 45, and 46 to be the artist's way of searching for erogenous zones. On a political level, Jane Fonda must have thought that F.T.A. shows would be entertaining, as well as conveying a particular message about militaristic thinking. Whoever thought of calling those shows "F.T.A." must have realized that the best communication involves some form of ecstatic flow, which gives people something somewhere between what people are used to and what they would really desire. Art stands up under this kind of scrutiny, while politics might mean getting involved with the kind of people who would like to treat it as unmentionable. This book seems to be about art, but writing helpful reviews may involve a lot more politics than shoppers would want to know. Don't let me tell you where this book doesn't belong.

3 out of 5 stars you need this on your coffee table.......1999-03-03

sorry that i'm reviewing this. I'm somewhere between the gay and the artist...but it's wonderful to flip through. I didn't pay as much as most and am very happy with about $32.00

                          Book Description

V.S. Meyerhold is considered by many to have been the most brilliant director of the 20th century, yet unlike his contemporary Stanislavsky, much of Meyerhold's work remains obscure. In this book Jonathan Pitches explains Meyerhold's often misunderstood "biomechanics". He also traces Meyerhold's development through his experiments with realism, symbolism, constructivism and futurism, and follows the political pressures which forced his decline and silence as an artist.

                                    Book Description

This book is intended to provide a view of Meyerhold at work on a few selected productions, as he was observed and remembered by those who worked with him, and to trace some patterns in the major events of his artistic life. The focus of these materials is specifically MeyerholdÕs work onstage and the complicated personal relationships that were a constant part of that work, and not primarily the cultural and artistic context in which the work was produced. This book is meant as a source book for actors, directors, and designers; it was compiled with the needs of contemporary theater people in mind.

Few artists have left as great a mark on twentieth-century theatre as has the Russian director Vsevolod Meyerhold. With ample justification, he has been called the Picasso of the modern theatre. Like that great painter, Meyerhold was a visionary, a ceaseless experimenter with new forms and techniques, the leader of an aesthetic revolution.
Meyerhold's productions were an encyclopedia of theatrical history, incorporating everything from circus tricks to highly stylized elements of the Kabuki theatre. In the twenties and thirties, Meyerhold's theatre became a mecca for those seeking new theatrical ideas. There was hardly a figure of importance in the theatre at that time who did not come to Moscow to see his work. And many, including Brecht, stayed on to study.
Unlike Stanislavsky, Meyerhold was not a theoretician. He left behind no large body of theoretical writings summing up his many years of experience in the theatre. What do remain and must take the place of both Meyerhold's theoretical wr
