Book Description
Just as Norman Maclean writes at the end of "A River Runs through It" that he is "haunted by waters," so have readers been haunted by his novella. A retired English professor who began writing fiction at the age of 70, Maclean produced what is now recognized as one of the classic American stories of the twentieth century. Originally published in 1976, A River Runs through It and Other Stories now celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary, marked by this new edition that includes a foreword by Annie Proulx.
Maclean grew up in the western Rocky Mountains in the first decades of the twentieth century. As a young man he worked many summers in logging camps and for the United States Forest Service. The two novellas and short story in this collection are based on his own experiencesthe experiences of a young man who found that life was only a step from art in its structures and beauty. The beauty he found was in reality, and so he leaves a careful record of what it was like to work in the woods when it was still a world of horse and hand and foot, without power saws, "cats," or four-wheel drives. Populated with drunks, loggers, card sharks, and whores, and set in the small towns and surrounding trout streams and mountains of western Montana, the stories concern themselves with the complexities of fly fishing, logging, fighting forest fires, playing cribbage, and being a husband, a son, and a father.
By turns raunchy, poignant, caustic, and elegiac, these are superb tales which express, in Maclean's own words, "a little of the love I have for the earth as it goes by." A first offering from a 70-year-old writer, the basis of a top-grossing movie, and the first original fiction published by the University of Chicago Press, A River Runs through It and Other Stories has sold more than a million copies. As Proulx writes in her foreword to this new edition, "In 1990 Norman Maclean died in body, but for hundreds of thousands of readers he will live as long as fish swim and books are made."
"Altogether beautiful in the power of its feeling. . . . As beautiful as anything in Thoreau or Hemingway."—Alfred Kazin, Chicago Tribune Book World
"It is an enchanted tale. . . . I have read the story three times now, and each time it seems fuller."— Roger Sale, New York Review of Books
"Maclean's book—acerbic, laconic, deadpan—rings out of a rich American tradition that includes Mark Twain, Kin Hubbard, Richard Bissell, Jean Shepherd, and Nelson Algren. I love its sound."—James R. Frakes, New York Times Book Review
"The title novella is the prize. . . . Something unique and marvelous: a story that is at once an evocation of nature's miracles and realities and a probing of human mysteries. Wise, witty, wonderful, Maclean spins his tales, casts his flies, fishes the rivers and the woods for what he remembers from his youth in the Rockies."—Publishers Weekly
"Ostensibly a 'fishing story,' 'A River Runs through It' is really an autobiographical elegy that captivates readers who have never held a fly rod in their hand. In it the art of casting a fly becomes a ritual of grace, a metaphor for man's attempt to move into nature."—Andrew Rosenheim, The Independent
Norman Maclean (1902-1990) was the William Rainey Harper Professor of English at the University of Chicago. His book on Montana's Mann Gulch forest fire of 1949, Young Men and Fire, is also available from the University of Chicago Press.

Poetry in motion.......2007-08-05
This is one of the best books I've ever read. It's been a while since I read it, but saw it the other day on my book shelf and just wished I could read it again fresh and brand new for the first time. It has joy, it has heartache. It has love, hate and the cruelty of the world all wrapped wonderfully around the beauty of nature and the awe of God's creation. Passages in this book can move you to tears in both a sad and joyous way. The ending pages are almost like a religious experience. It's hard to find someone in this day and age that can put words together like Norman Maclean did. The book is very poetic. I happen to love fishing, but it doesn't matter if you've ever fished in your life. This book is one you won't ever forget.
grief.......2007-07-25
I love fly fishing. I love Montana. I love rivers. So how could I not like this book? I remember some years ago discussing the novella with a friend, and he said he thought it was too simplistic. I suppose what he was really saying was that it was too sentimental, that it was trying too hard to be poetic, or that it simplified itself into silence to pull at your heartstrings. I see his criticism, but to this day I still don't agree.
I'm a sentimental person who is also a cynic -- so I may shed a tear or two, but I hate it when I do -- especially when I feel at all manipulated. But the final page of this novel always makes me grieve in a way that makes me feel expansively human, and not at all self-conscious.
I wonder how many people who don't share my interests are moved in the same way as I am by this story?
Perfect.......2007-06-22
Like Mr. Maclean, I spent a great deal of time, whole summers, in the American West fishing and hiking with my father. This book is the fullest expression yet of the kind of respect and love that can grow between a father and son from the accumulation of small moments of instruction and the act of meditating on those moments for years. This book, as a reflection on nature, and the nature of man and memory and how the two can become intertwined, is simply perfect.
River Runs Through It.......2007-05-26
This is one of the finest books i have ever read. I have never been into fishing of any sort, but Maclean's wonderful sensory detail brings Montana to life in a way that everyone can appreciate. The ending was shocking and powerful, something i will never forget.
a reader.......2007-05-19
if you like to read and like good stories, you wont be disappointed in this book.
no hype is too much for the way mclean writes. he put his story into words when he was in his seventies, and he knows how to reflect and correspond his memories to us his reader, as though we're all old friends.
i can't say anything more about this story or his writings other than:
they're beautiful.

Easily the most powerful book I ever read.......2005-04-03
This book was amazing. It was written so well and told a story seldom written about. I have read many book about the Holocaust, but none dealt with the realities of being the child of a survivor. I cried for 200 of the 230 pages. This book has so much to teach, and was a very quick read. It is a must-read for anyone who knows Holocaust survivors or their children.
The Ties That Bind.......2004-10-03
As a Jew who survived the horrors of the Holocaust and life in a concentration camp, Elie Wiesel continuosly weaves these circumstances into his writings. In his works, he struggles to answer nearly impossible questions: why was it the fate of the Jews to die and why did they seem to accept that fate without a fight? "The Fifth Son" is a philosophical testament that seeks the answers to those questions, but also imaginatively examines the bond between father and son.
As usual with Wiesel's novels, the reader is transported from the present to the past numerous times. We meet Rueven Tamiroff, a librarian in New York, a Jew who survived the Holocaust, and a father who cannot communicate with his unnamed son. His son desperately searches for the keys to his father's behavior, searching out stories of his past through every possible means. When he finally uncovers the truth about his father's past that is destroying his present reality, the son becomes obsessed with setting the record straight. The son's travels take him back to Germany and into the darkest recesses of encroaching madness. Wiesel's characters are vividly written, intelligent and fragile creatures.
Wiesel takes his readers on a philosophical tour of Nazi torture and the revenge that assauged those Jews who survived WWII, as well as the guilt they felt for surviving when so many others did not. He speaks eloquently of the displacement of Jews who moved to America, as well as the anger of the younger German generation who are blamed for the sins of the older generation. The questions he raises are hard to answer; mainly because answers are yet to be found that would satisfy Wiesel.
A Beautiful Read.......2000-04-07
Wiesel writes with the voice of a poet in this complex novel. It is told from the point of view of a Jewish young man who is trying desperately to understand his father, a Holocaust survivor. The young man, who is never named, wants to know everything he can about his father's experiences, and he slowly begins to gain information through his father's friends and through the letters he discovers, written by his father to his son Ariel. The book begins in a sequence that is confusing in the manner of a poem; it eventually becomes clearer as the themes of the book are developed. The young man is going to visit Germany to meet up with his father's past and somehow come to terms with it. He struggles with hate and forgiveness, and ultimately meets up with his father's past, and his own obsession, in a confrontation that tests his courage and helps him approach some sort of peace.
Good Book a tough read.......1999-02-07
The Fifth Son is a novel about a son who grows close to his father over a long period of time. I thought that it was a good book because it was told from a couple points of view. This is what also made it a tough read. The story is told through a jewish boy who wants to get close to his father. The father remains distant, but he writes these letters to his son, which to me makes the book confusing because the point of view tends to switch between the father and the son. Each wanting to grow close to one another but not knowing how to express themself in the right way. The story also gets confusing because the setting always switches back to Europe during WWII in this Jewish ghetto of which the jewish boys' father is the president of a Jewish council. Over all it was a pretty good book and I would recomend it.

Presenting an exciting new way to experience the rich history of the Man of Steel -- affordable trade paperback collection that will ultimately collect every Superman adventure, in color, in chronological order!THE SUPERMAN CHRONICLES VOL. 1 reprints the earliest stories from ACTION COMICS and SUPERMAN, featuring the first several adventures of the Man of Steel by Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
Customer Reviews:
Good kick back reading.......2007-09-11
It's nice to read Superman's early stories. This is the way, he is supposed to be. Excellent kick back reading.
Vintage Superman.......2007-08-16
This is a collection of the earliest Superman comics, they are in color and affordable. I would consider these a must own for any Superman fan. Overall production value, although not flashy, is excellent and the stories are classics. This is where it all started.
Loses a star due to the lag between volumes.......2007-02-19
Almost a year after the release of Volume 1, DC finally gives us SUPERMAN CHRONICLES VOLUME 2, continuing the admirable but somewhat laughable effort (at this rate, at least) of reprinting every Superman appearance in chronological order. This book features classic tales from Action Comics #14-20 and Superman #2 & 3, from 1939-1940. All stories are written and illustrated by Superman co-creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Keep in mind that these are some of the earliest adventures of Superman from comics' Golden Age, so the style is very direct, almost to a fault. Looking back on them, there's no real narrative complexity or character development - more like Siegel and Shuster were simply producing stories to fill a demand. It actually seems that the boys from Cleveland weren't quite sure what to do with their fantastic creation now that he was finally in comics. Superman didn't have much of a rogues gallery at this point; instead, he deals with white-collar criminals and thugs, with everyone behaving similarly to what was seen in the Superman TV series of the `50s. The only remarkable villain is the Ultra-Humanite, whose appearance in the final story of this volume is something no fan of James Robinson's THE GOLDEN AGE will want to miss. In any case, you're experiencing comics history in the making, getting a look at stories that your parents or grandparents enjoyed as kids, and gaining an understanding of why comics caught on as they did in a world that had a need for fantastic heroes. Even though these stories may be somewhat bland, they have an appeal that can't be ingnored.
I just wish DC would speed up their reprinting of these stories so that readers don't grow old before the Golden Age stories wrap up. There are certainly plenty of stories and other characters to choose from to keep these books coming. Get it in gear, DC!
NOT THE GREATEST, BUT VERY GOOD........2007-02-02
The Greatest Superman Stories Ever Told volume two is out, containing nine stories from throughout Superman's long and colorful history. Are these truly the greatest Superman stories? Probably not. The real goal of the DC editors seemed to be to select one story from each decade as opposed to honestly giving readers the best stories. It's more a decade-by-decade sampler of Superman. Good stories no doubt but you could find better I'd argue.
The first story seems to be included more for its historical significance rather than its greatness. "The Mysterious Mr. Mxyztplk" was originally presented in Superman #30 from 1944 and features Superman's first encounter with the troublesome imp from the 5th dimension. Mxyztplk is presented as a cartoon-like character, content to play practical jokes and far removed from the most sinister personality of the modern day character.
"Superman's Other Life" from Superman #132, 1959 presents an interesting "what if" story. Batman feeds all data about Superman into a super-computer called the Univac (which sounds more like Hoover's latest model...) and Superman can visually see how his life might have been if Krypton had not exploded and he was sent to Earth. It's actually an interesting story though hindered by Wayne Boring's art who I never much cared for due to his blocky character appearances.
Superman #141 gives us "The Team of Luthor and Brainiac" a pedestrian title for sure but a solid story written by popular Sci-Fi author Edmond Hamilton. Includes early Curt Swan art.
I'd say my favorite story in the book is "The Secret Revealed" from Superman #2 (2nd series) by John Byrne. Luthor is delving into Clark Kent's mysterious past and goes so far as to kidnap and torture Lana Lang. When all his data is processed by computer it reveals that Clark Kent is Superman. Luthor refuses to believe this as he thinks no person could hold such power without abusing it. A truly chilling look at Luthor's twisted personality.
Jonathan Kent is the true star of "Life After Death" from Superman 500. As Jonathan fights for life in a hospital, his spirit travels far and wide to try and return his son to life after being killed in the battle with Doomsday.
These aren't the greatest Superman stories ever but then again, ask a hundred people to give you their top Superman stories and you'd get a hundred different answers. Most of the stories are very good, a few are exceptional, and a few are ordinary. Great cover by Alex Ross!

Man of Socialism.......2006-11-04
I hate Superman. I have always hated Superman. This has nothing to do with my childhood years and my brother always calling Superman before I could get a chance to. I just hate Superman. Too damn good. Too patriotic. Too one-dimensional. Too authoritarian. I always gravitated to the more grey area heroes like Batman, SPider-Man, Daredevil, Dr. Strange. This being said, Superman Chronicles is a wonderful collection and allows the scholar to see Seigel and Schuster's creation in its original context. This has opened a new window on the character for me, and for that, this book is worth exploring if you have ambivalence toward the Superfascist.

I first read this book when I was in forth grade. It made a great impression on me. During a move a year later the book was lost. I recently found it on auction and read it again. I am amazed at how wonderfully complex the story is for both young and old readers. Certainly a story for all. Happy reading.

Sleator is unquestionalby a master at this juncture. And "Green Futures" only serves to reiterate this point. One of his more dry storys "Green Futures" utterly destroys any sense of what you think is possible and impossible and aslo what is bad and what is good.
One of the most chilling aspects about alot of Sleator's books is his sometimes horrific display of the Nuclear Family. This book and other like "Rewind" open a few doors into some frightening house holds.
The bottom line is that Sleator is and will continue to be simply Awsome. I highly reccomend this, and many other or his older works like, House of Stairs, Intersteller Pig, Singularity, Strange Attractors, The Duplicate, and Others See Us.
I've been gorging myself on Sleator novels since early childhood, and will continue to do so. The only complaint that I have about this author is that he is not more recognized for people to see his greatness. Truly this man and his works are a credit to our civilization.
Book Description
Nurturing Child and Adolescent Spirituality: Perspectives from the World's Religious Traditions provides a forum for prominent religious scholars to examine the state of religious knowledge and theological reflection on spiritual development in childhood and adolescence. Featuring essays from thinkers representing the world's major religious traditions, the book introduces new voices, challenges assumptions, raises new questions, and broadens the base of knowledge and investment in this important domain of life. Nurturing Child and Adolescent Spirituality will set the stage for new waves of scholarship and dialogue within and across traditions, disciplines, and cultures that will enrich understanding and strengthen how the world's religious traditions, and others, understand and cultivate the spiritual lives of children and adolescents around the globe.
Customer Reviews:
A theological underpinning to a wide range of possibilities.......2006-11-27
In the preface, the editors state the question that confronted them at the start of the process for this book - `How do you do justice to the wisdom of multiple religious traditions within a single volume - particularly on a "fuzzy" topic like spirituality?" Even with an idea of being as inclusive as possible, some selectivity had to be put in place - the focus was set on `theological or philosophical perspectives from within religious traditions', those traditions being primarily Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism (with some voices from a few others). This is not intended as a definitive text, but rather as a starting point for conversations between the traditions, cultures, and people.
It is unusual in history for cultures to not be concerned about the future (modern political discourse in the West has a very high rate of reference to children and families), and yet the specific concerns of children and adolescents, both in terms of what they need and what they want, are often missing. This is also true in the area of religion and spirituality. `Despite the popular buzz about spirituality, relatively little critical attention has focused on the spiritual lives of children and adolescents. Much of the literature of spirituality has focused instead on adults.' There are various ways in which churches and other religious institutions try to incorporate children and young adults, but they often fall short for various reasons, sometimes due to stereotypes or outmoded views, and sometimes due to narrow focus, or lack of attention. `An important opportunity to enrich the lives of children and adolescents is being lost, set aside by most religious traditions and religious studies scholars as unworthy of critical attention.'
My own interest in this subject comes from a few different angles; first, I have a personal connection with a few of the contributors and editors of this volume. Second, I am interested in spiritual practices and how they develop in people. However, I am now in my eighth year as a chaplain at a retirement community, and we have no children in the immediate community. This is not to say that children are not important - on the contrary, virtually everyone in my community is a parent, grandparent, and even great-grandparent, and virtually everyone is concerned at how things will continue and be passed down. This led me to the fifth section of the text - Who is Responsible for Nurturing Spirituality? The essays here have given me insights to share with my community, of things for them to consider and to share with their own families. Also, there are practices and ideas that, while designed and intended for children, might also have application for older adults as well - ideas such as narrative theology and storytelling, and ideas of prayer, holy days and blessing such as found in the essays in section three: Rituals and Practices to Nurture the Inner Life.
This is an academic text, as the editors point out in their postscript. `Although these dialogues have intrinsic merit, we believe they need to be strengthened and enriched by also engaging in sustained dialogue with young people themselves as well as their leaders, educators, and parents.' This is not a how-to manual, but rather a book to lay a theological underpinning to a wide range of possibilities.

Darcy has a great touch for describing the plants, their history (native or not) and which pieces/parts are used for the recipes. Her recipes are easy to use and she even makes stinging nettle sound like something worth trying! I enjoy her flair for writing and the lovely drawings of the plants themselvese. Get the Lark edition for less than half the price.......2005-01-27
(...)this book is a must-have for any Nikon enthusiast, whether you are a collector, a gearhead, or a real photographer. Its strength is the enormous wealth of information compiled on the millions of pieces of Nikon equipment. A great guide that can help you choose and buy the right equipment that fits your needs.
A Nikon collector's delight!.......2005-01-05
As a collector of Nikon 35mm cameras and lenses, I find this book to be superb. The quality of the paper and printing is remarkable and the color photographs of the different Nikon cameras are simply incredible. Due to the number of cameras described, from the Nikon I Rangefinder to the current D70 it is unrealistic to expect a complete description of each and every feature of each and every model, nevertheless the writer has done a heck of a job, highlighting the most outstanding features of nearly every camera, lens, flash unit and major accessory that Nikon has ever developed - an amazing achievement by any standard. My only complaint about this book is the glaring lack of a more meticulous editing of the English text. A couple of quotes will illustrate my point: "Nikon have provided photographers with..." (p.5); and "their focusing performance is positively agricultural compared to the present crop of AF Nikkor lenses" (p.159). What is that supposed to mean? Nevertheless, I love this book almost as much as I love my Nikon cameras and recommend it wholeheartedly.
Nikon Opus.......2004-05-13
There are just a few writers who should attempt to write a book about the history of Nikon and its vast range of camera equipment and the technical editor of Nikon Owners' Club International Simon Stafford is probably at the top of that list. This is a great book; the photographs by the author are excellent. I have a very large library of titles on the Nikon system going back over 40 years, Simon Stafford's book is one of the best ever. I understand that Nikon U.K. Limited have ordered a large number of copies for all their sales and technical staff to have to hand.
Latest Nikon Compendium.......2004-04-17
Simon's latest compendium on the Nikon system is loaded with incredible photos that any Nikon collector (mostly SLR) would be pleased to pour over. The most remarkable thing about this book are those,--the photographs, and how the equipment appears to be in mint condition. That in itself makes this book worth the purchase. There is virtually no coverage of Nikon in the old days (prior to 1959 and the Nikon F) so the title is somewhat misleading. If you want more on the rangefinder line go to Robert's rangefinder book (Nikon Rngefinder Camera, Robert Rotoloni). Equally, there is only a passing discussion of Nikon's production of lenses for non-Nikon cameras prior to the 1950s. Perhaps a page is spent there. All in all, a rather good work. There are a scattering of technical errors as well as some brought on because this is a translation from the German edition. The former always disturbs me. I have yet to find a technically correct Nikon book. The vastness of the subject matter is what apparently precludes this. In summary, for the Nikon SLR collector, this is a beautifully assembled book worthy of purchase. --Santa Barbara, April 2004

Customer Reviews:
A huge letdown.......2005-05-29
This subject matter covered by this book is of interest to most wood turners, it is a pity it is so poorly presented. The text does not live up to the pictures on the front cover.
In short this book is a sequence of pictures and because they have NOT A SINGLE caption, it is almost unreadable, if not exceedingly frustrating. The Pictures, for example have a reference, Fig 3.2 in bold, but the text has not bold reference to the figure so if you come across a picture that appears interesting, it takes many minutes to look through the text for a reference to the figure.
Don't waste your money - if you want a good book that covers just about all the topics covered in this book and has far better ways of holding the work, then have a look at Tibbet's book, Segmented Turning....that is a gem.

Run For Your Life!.......2004-09-08
I am really surprised this book is still in print. I purchased it thinking I would at least get a few new ideas on advanced techniques and perhaps some real interesting gallery photos to reference for inspiration. I was a bit disappointed.
Jack Cox is obviously an extremely talented mathematician and a talented turner as well, but the book proves itself difficult to follow and a bit too obscure. Much of the information, while interesting if you can understand it after reading it several times, is outdated. There are many other books out there on advanced turning and a few on segmented turning, I have all that have been in print in the last twenty years and would recommend ANY of them over this book.
It seems to be too complex and hard to follow with little in the way of "user friendly" instructions....Sorry Jack. You are talented, have someone else help write the next book.

I was looking for a book to enable me to take the next step in segmented turning. The book I desired should feature jigs and techniques used to make laminated, coopered, and cut compound angled segments. I feel that "Beyond Basic Turning" by Jack Cox to have fallen fell well short of the mark.
I found the documentation wordy, and extremely difficult to follow. This book was written more along the lines of a high school calculus or algebra book than a book on turning (and it was just about as interesting).
Numerous references in the documentation to figures, tables, and photos arranged haphazardly through the book required that I constantly flip back and forth between pages while reading. This was very distracting.
As far as the jigs the author uses to assemble his turnings; I've seen less complicated structures used in the space shuttle.
I attribute this book's total failure on getting the author's point across to its relative age. This book is approximately 10 to 15 years out of date. Numerous advances such as desk top computers (for spreadsheets), hand held calculators, and high quality after market miter gauges for saws, make these arduous tasks much easier than as detailed in this book
After attempting to read the entire book on 3 separate occasions, I gave up. It now exists as a monument to never buying a book without actually reading a detailed review, or physically picking it up in a store.
Book too technical.......2001-06-18
Book is very much into engineering math. I only had 1 year of algbera and I would have spent all of my time trying to figure it out and not making anything. I returned the book.

Great Book!.......2004-11-25
This is a great book for the gardener with little space. All of the gardens featured are pretty small by suburban standards. But none the less, the gardens and designs Keith Davitt covers are spectacular.
You will discover how to get rid of that same old boring lawn that everyone else has on the block. Davitt takes you through creating your very own unique garden with stone, brick, gravel, water and lots more. He covers why it works for the owner and the space given. It gives valuable insights for the gardener planning a new space.
Crafting a unique, personal, and relaxing atmosphere.......2003-10-10

Lavishly illustrated with full-color photography, Beyond The Lawn is a treat to page through and recommended for gardeners everywhere looking to add a bit of originality to the grounds outside their home. Offering a vast panoply of materials for crafting a unique, personal, and relaxing atmosphere, Beyond The Lawn is a welcome and enthusiastically recommended addition to professional and personal gardening reference collections.
Many unusual beautiful gardens & good design analysis.......2003-08-08
This book is full of pictures of unusual and beautiful gardens all very different from one another. I especially enjoyed seeing the variety of what is possible. The text focuses mainly on design with discussion on style and analysis of what works and why. Although I think Keith Davitt's first book "Small Spaces Beautiful Gardens" was a superior book with more information on how each garden was created and before & after pictures, I still highly recommend this book for its many examples and design tips.

Customer Reviews:
Should be called "Remedial Self-Publishing".......2005-05-11
As Lisa Shaw's livelihood (designing and distributing greeting cards for companion animals) is near and dear to my heart, it truly pains me that I have to pan her book, "How to Make Money Publishing from Home." However, I feel as though I'd be remiss if I were to review the many other self-publishing books I've read and skip over this guide.
Before deciding to self-publish my first eBook, I ransacked my local libraries and checked out every volume I could find on self-publishing in general, and electronic publishing in particular. Ms. Shaw's book was the first to arrive, and I digested it in one night - in one sitting, actually. "Digested" is perhaps too strong of a word, though - there's so little substance in "How to Make Money..." that there wasn't anything for me to digest at all. It's so general a guide that the author manages to say very little about a whole lot.
In under 200 pages, she briefly discusses self-publishing booklets, books, greeting cards, magazines, newsletters, newspapers, software, `zines, ezines, and websites; writing, following, and revising business plans; tax and zoning issues; accounting and finances; the necessary self-publishing technology, including computers, scanners, printers, phone lines, fax machines, networking, and software; day-to-day business operations; and marketing and publicity. Thus, no one subject is afforded more than a few pages. From the wide variety of topics covered, it may appear as though Ms. Shaw offers a wealth of information in her guide. Yet, the opposite is actually true: she tries to cover so many facets of self-publishing that she doesn't adequately address any of the topics she raises. Any one of the aforementioned subjects deserves its own guide: each is so complex and complicated that only an entire book could do it justice. Indeed, if you were to perform a keyword search for any of these terms on Amazon, its search engine would return dozens of results.
My advice is this: If you're interested in self-publishing, don't try to save money and buy just one "how-to" guide (such as this one) to answer all your questions - you'd be cheating yourself as opposed to protecting your wallet. Rather, consult at least one book on traditional publishing, another about self- (or electronic) publishing, a third on marketing, yet another on taxes and finances for small businesses, and so on. "How to Make Money Publishing from Home" is so basic that it should be called "Remedial Self-Publishing" or, better yet, "Self-Publishing for Sixth Graders." There's almost no useful information in here - you're much better off spending your money (and time) elsewhere. Heck, you can even Google "self-publishing" and find more meaningful resources (and largely for free, to boot)!
Finally (and perhaps I'm just nit-picking now), the author began by introducing the different forms of self-published material (booklets, books, greeting cards, magazines, etc.), offering a short summary of each. This left me with the distinct and distasteful impression that this book was aimed at those who want to publish their own work just so that they can make wads of money without leaving the house (which rarely happens, despite the anomalies you read about in the "author profiles"). After all, if you're self-publishing for self-gratification, because you have knowledge that you want to share with others, or just for the love of the written word, shouldn't you already have some idea of what you're going to publish? In any case, this really put me off - anyone consulting a self-publishing book should already know what books, booklets, and magazines are, otherwise they don't really belong in the publishing business. Unless they're still in the sixth grade, in which case their ignorance is forgiven!

Great range of possibilities.......2005-03-18
Lisa Shaw explores lots of ways to develop information products, no matter where your starting point. She's been out there way before many other authors who have since jumped on the self-publishing bandwagon.
Drive-by.......2002-04-07
Lisa Shaw's advice on the economics of starting a home-based publishing business is something of a conundrum. First, she claims startup capital and money for living expenses can be unnecessary luxuries that sap motivation. "In fact," she says, "I had no money in my early publishing ventures, so I had to rely solely on my creativity and my intractable faith in my own abilities." Later, she recommends this reality check to help assess the level of risk you're comfortable assuming: "How would you react if you or a family member had to spend a week in the hospital and you didn't have health insurance because you needed the money to pay the mortgage?"
She goes on to take a superficial look at a number of self-publishing enterprises (including booklets, books, greeting cards, magazines, newsletters, newspapers, software and e-zines); considering ease of startup, initial investment, time commitment required and other factors.
Each chapter contains a brief profile of someone who's been successful in each line of home-based publishing, but little detail is given. The profiles tell what each entrepreneur did, but offer only limited information on how they did it, since names and contact information for the resources they used are kept secret. Despite citing the growth of the Internet as one of the key factors making home-based publishing viable, there's scarce information on how to utilize the World Wide Web as a marketing tool for your efforts. And in a chapter dealing with computer hardware and software titled "Technologically Speaking" - a chapter one would expect would be brimming with detail based on the book's topic - Shaw's best advice is, "do your own research...."
The final chapter begins, "You now have the knowledge and the tools necessary to start your own home-based publishing business."
Not unless you're prepared to do a lot of supplemental reading.
Unless you're looking for a very brief introduction to home-based publishing, there's no "how-to" in How to Make Money Publishing from Home.
Shaw's book is drive-by writing, without the research.
An Absolute Must for Anyone Opening a Home-Based Publishing.......2000-06-05
Have you ever dreamed of starting your own home-based publishing business? Have you been hesitant to put your plans into action? This book contains all the necessary ideas and strategies you will need to successfully launch and grow your business. Lisa Shaw, a home-based publisher, reveals to her readers everything they need to know to successfully start and run a home-based publishing business.
I have read and re-read the book so many times, the cover has gotten frayed. The genius of the book is that it is based in sound business practices and could theoretically be applied to any business. Whether you want to earn your living creating newsletters and brochures, zines and postcards with this excellent book at your side you can experience the satisfaction of building your own home-based publishing business.
A Business Bible for "Old Dog" & "New Puppy" Entrepreneurs!.......1998-04-26
Publishing is part of the daily routine at my 13-year-old, home-based marketing and public relations firm. So, I was wondering what innovative things Lisa Shaw would be able to teach me in her book HOW TO MAKE MONEY PUBLISHING FROM HOME. Well, trust me--this "old dog" learned PLENTY of new tricks! Of course, there was the usual, basic stuff: reasons to begin a home-based business, financial assessments, skills needed and exactly what to expect from your new venture. But then I learned about: new niches I could fill within my company; some areas of publishing I'd NEVER want to try based on Ms. Shaw's descriptions (which saved me time); and Zines ... never had heard of them! There were a few things I wish the author HAD included, and perhaps they can be in a revised edition: a) contract examples for independent contractors, b) confidentiality statements for use with clients and c) since the book is about publishing, more updated information on copyright laws. Her Resource List included many of the titles I have relied on over the years, and which should be "must reads" for budding entrepreneurs. And, I'd like to add two titles to her list: 1)GETTING BUSINESS TO COME TO YOU by Paul & Sarah Edwards and Laura Clampitt Douglas and 2) 101 HOME OFFICE SUCCESS SECRETS by Lisa Kanarek. It was apparent in the content of Ms. Shaw's book that she had "been there" and obviously "done that" (publishing from home) extremely well! Warning: Running a home-based business isn't for sissies! Do you homework and research BEFORE you begin to save you a lot of heartache later. And, oh yeah, GOOD LUCK!

Sequins and feathers, glitter and ribbons, dried flowers and seashells, scraps of mulberry paper and snippets of lace--these and many other adornments jazz up the pretty cards in Debbie Brown's How to Make First-Class Cards. With motifs ranging from celestial to nature-oriented, kid-friendly to holiday- themed, the 30 simple projects include decent instructions and full templates for each card. Although the designs are merely on a par with other similar guides, the excellent background information is far more thorough than most books on the subject, with extensive details on papers, equipment, adhesives, embellishments, basic techniques, envelopes, and designing your own cards. -- Amy Handy

How to make first class cards.......2004-05-24
for a beginning card crafter, the level of detail involved in each card was a bit daunting. Perhaps in a year of two, and with the assistance of a few good merchants, then I will cheerfully attack these projects, but for now they seem to be beyond my abilities.

Men Demystified!.......2002-05-06
Are you in a fog about the opposite sex? I sure was. I'm a busy single mom and I read this clever book in two hours! Finally, I know the really important differences between men and women. I feel empowered!
A guide to the differences between men and women? Whatever........1999-12-08
This book definately has some entertainment value, but I don't think that is why people are reading it. Hello people! If you're going to believe an author because she wrote a book, you need some help. Did anyone take the time to look at her sources? Cosmopolitan, People, Good Housekeeping...these are just a few. There is very little research to back any of the assertions that are made in this book. Yes, the book does make some valid points, but stop trying to break the world into strictly masculine and feminine. After reading this book I felt like I fit more of the characteristics of a man than a woman. Whatever you (the readers) do...please do not take this book to heart. There's little support, and keep in mind that the author is not conducting actual experiments or observations to validate the points. This book gives all of us that actually research psychological issues a bad name.

Product Description
The 12 chapters in The Other Side of the Bed reveal the cicumstances, the emotions, and the background of the songs included on the book's CD.
As an employee of Children's Hospital of Illinois, I have been honored to share my gift of music at the bedside of hospitalized children for more than 18 years. Creating a sense of peace and inspiring joy has been my goal. My inner desire? To lessen the anxiety that comes in the midst of an unexpected or unwanted situation.
One of my greatest lessons in life has been that adversity--no matter how challenging--is a remarkable opportunity for growth, not only for the individual experiencing it, but also for those who choose to take part in easing the pain of another.
On the morning of July 20, 2000, God lifted me up, surrounded me with love, and then--keeping his promise as the great "I Am"--he gently carried me to the other side of the bed.

This is not only a wonderful CD, it is tells the story behind all the songs written by Cookie. Cookie Bannon works for the Childrens Hospital of Illinois and sings to children with cancer, rare diseases and many other disabilities. Her talents not only with her music, but compasion are brought to life in this heartworming book. "The Other Side of the Bed" describes her own personal account of her only son who was paralyzed and how he held on to his life with Cookie at his bedside. A must have!!!
