Book Description

In this brilliant collection of "long short stories, " the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Sophie's Choice returns to the coastal Virginia setting of his first novels. Through the eyes of a man recollecting three episodes from his youth, William Styron explores with new eloquence death, loss, war, and racism.

4 out of 5 stars Not essential Styron but a good intro to his work.......2000-06-12

Styron revisits old themes in this collection subtitled "Three Tales from Youth" and set, two thirds of the way, in Tidewater Virginia in the earlier part of the twentieth century. In it we see three episodes from the life of Styron's autobiographical protagonist Paul Whitehurst at ages twenty, ten, and thirteen.

In "Love Day" Paul, a young Marine lieutenant, experiences intense homesickness in the Pacific Ocean during the waning months of WWII. This is well-written but perhaps the least impressive of the three tales. Next is best. "Shadrach" is a wonderfully affecting, funny, and touching story of a 99-year old former slave who walks all the way from Clay County, Alabama, to Virginia to die and be buried in his homeplace. The title story shows Paul's struggle to accept his mother's approaching death from cancer and pays especial attention to the complex relationship between his parents.

Despite Styron's wonderfully indulgent and rococo style, these stories make for fairly quick reads, as we are carried along on a stream of telling detail and crystalline reminiscence. Not that the work lacks complication. As with his larger-canvased works, Styron deals with issues of race, Southern identity, heterosexual love, courage, cowardice, religion, and art. Here and there the stories are marred by facile liberal pieties and stilted dialogue, but for the most part it is a pleasure to watch this old master cast perhaps one last look at the familiar but still-fertile landscape of his heart and imagination.

4 out of 5 stars Picturesque and memorable.......2000-03-14

Styron raises enough intriguing issues and questions that A Tidewater Morning could have been a full-bodied novel. Instead, we are treated to three short stories that, while somewhat disjointed, do manage to flow with relative ease. There's little new material addressed here: Styron returns to his favorite themes of slavery, war, and death, but he does manage some fresh twists that allow Tidewater to stand memorably on its own merits.

5 out of 5 stars Enter the world of Styron HERE!.......2000-01-17

This book is a beautiful intermingling of past memeories and present strife. The war time world of Paul Whitehurst is made apparent; his childhood battles were fought just as passionately as any battle in WWII. Paul is a fictional character full of wit and wisdom. He comes alive in the three separate stories of his life. Your only thought at the end of this (way to short) novel is that you wish there was some kind of continuation or sequel to Paul Whitehurst's story.

4 out of 5 stars Youth revisited through the sanctuary of memory.......1999-01-20

William Styron has penned a remarkable trilogy of tales which are an "imaginative reshaping of real events." His word-craft is both highly engaging though over-wrought at times. Nevertheless, his recreations of scenes are palpable. The last tale, "A Tidewater Morning", is a tour-de-force of the short story medium. His command of the movement of the events, punctuated by inserts of past dialogue between key characters, sensitively sets up the reader for an emotional cascade of grief as shared between father and son. Styron approaches the veil of the mystery and vividness of childhood events with a delft mind and hand conceived of respect and midwived with love.

5 out of 5 stars I was and still am captivated by this novel, it's been 2 yrs.......1998-07-20

"A tidewater morning" was truly the most inspirational and exhillerating short story of the decade. The closing two pages when the boys father breaks down and goes to his knees and asks his son to repeat a certain song or quote. This will bring any person with somewhat of a sensitive side to their knees. Possibly, one might never recovering from the titilating experience.

"Award-winning author Sharon Shinn returns to the ""fascinating world""* of Samaria in a richly romantic tale that begins where Archangel left off. In that time, the women who craved the attention of angels were known as angel-seekers, a term used with awe by some-and scorn by others. Elizabeth was born to wealth, but circumstances forced her to live as a servant in her cousin's household. Determined to change her life, she travels to the town of Cedar Hills, hoping that an angel will take notice of her, and take her as his own. Rebekah is a daughter of the Jansai tribe, raised to hate the angels. But when she finds an injured angel near her village, she defies her upbringing to care for him. In time, these two women, whose paths will cross, will both find what they long for, in surprising-and dangerous-ways."

                    5 out of 5 stars A fully realized world.......2006-08-25

For those who have enjoyed Sharon Shinn's novels of Samaria and wondered "Whatever happened to Obadiah?" the engaging Angel from "Archangel", here is the follow-up book that tells his story. It tells the tale of two people from very different cultures wanting to love each other, but encountering prohibitions and even life-threating obstacles to being together. The woman Obadiah falls in love with, Rebekah, is a Jansai. The women of this race are kept in virtual purdah and the affair between the two means a death-sentance for Rebekah should they be discovered. The portrayal of their covert affair was very affecting, much more so than the parallel story line of the "angel-seeker" that the book takes it's title from. Elizabeth comes to the keep to try to become pregnant with an Angels child, only to find herself as a person instead. I could have dispensed with Elizaeth's story altogether but it really did not dim my enjoyment of the over-all book.It was well worth the time to read it!

3 out of 5 stars A far cry from Shinn's earlier work. .......2006-03-03

As a standalone novel Angel Seeker is a pretty good romance novel. I'm a fan of well written romance novels that have an actual plot and a bit of a spin on the old genre.

However, this is a far cry from Shinn's original series. Her Samaria series was interesting, creative, and smacked enough of sci-fi/fantasy to be labeled as such. Ths had just a little too much fluff and all I can really label it as is a comfort book. The book gets extra points for keeping me interested, but it literally dropped the ball in the last four chapters or so. There was so much buildup that it rushed the outomes of these characters' relationships and really cheapened even my beginning interest in the novel. We waited hundreds of pages to see the outcomes of the main characters and this is what you give us? Relationships just fall flat and there's a really lousy wrap up to the end of the novel. A better conclusion would have shown both girls and the new bond they may have formed through all their ordeals. It would have tied the story together very well.

Most blaringly is the absence of any of the mystery that surrounded the first books. I realize that the general populous doesn't know the truth behind Samaria, but why make no reference to any of it at all? At one point there is a slight reference to the oracles at Mt. Sinai, and then Shinn runs away from it as though she knows she doesn't even want to go there. Shinn had really spent a lot of effot creating religion and history in her past novels. There is none of this in that. I would go into more detail about this, but I don't want to give away any spoilers to anyone who hasn't read those books yet.

I understand that it's easy to give 5 stars to a fluffy romance that might have been enjoyable, but this really wasn't up to par or even in the same category as her previous books.

4 out of 5 stars sadder than the first 4 but better than the third.......2006-02-28

I love this series...it is definately on my "comfort shelf". My least favorite is the third. This one is probably not good for youth readers...it has some serious adult topics. It really gets into the life of angel seekers and the promiscuity of that group of people. The Janasi have a very arabic/muslim feel and the book is pretty slanted against them. Overall the book was much heavier and more...dare I say it...political than the first four. I'd recommend it to those of a stout heart and moderate shock value/life experience.

5 out of 5 stars SF for the liberation of women.......2006-01-15

It is fortunate that Shinn returns to her wonderful creation of Samaria to tell this story. As always, the main plots are tales of romance of the highest calibre. But in addition there is the detailed description of the repression of women in the Jansai culture, which provokes both thought and feeling. A great book.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Gentle Love Story.......2005-06-24

This is the third of the Samaria books which I have read and while I still consider Archangel the best, Angel Seeker comes a close second. The characters are similar enough to people we know or know about that they are comprehensible and, in some cases, sympathetic. The plot is well paced, two women from totally different circumstances each learn about love and angels. Shinn made me care about them and want to see them succeed, each in her own way. I am generally hard to please when it comes to romances since I find most to be very formulaic and ordinary, but Angel Seeker stood out and earned my respect. I highly recommend it to anyone who feels even the slightest pull towards this book. It helps if you have read either of the first two books but it isn't essential.

Who would've thought a story could combine cowboys and space aliens? This book took us completely by surprise. The farmer's moo-cow was kidnapped by Zork, a cowboy from a planet far away in outer space. Zork plans to ride the earthling Moo-Cow in the Intergalactic Rodeo.

My 4 year old son was delighted with the western and space themes and intrigued by the active plot and silly words. I was pleased to find such a neat, adventure-filled book with such a uniqueness to it. Great read-a-loud!

This book focuses on the major urban centers in the 10/40 window. The background and statistical informaton for each city (including unreached peoples) is laid out in easy to read format. A map is also provied for each city and can help one keep the city in perspective. Specific prayer requests are listed for each city. I have found this book to be an excellent companion book to Praying Through the Window III: The Unreached Peoples. Using these books in tandem will not only make your prayer life more focused, but will also give you a deeper appreciation for other peoples around the world.

I havn't read it yet, but it MUST be good, because my local library system had two copies, which are "lost." As a longtime patron and bookscout/seller, I know this really means STOLEN.

Since our library only charges a maximum of $6.00 for lost books, it's hardly a disincentive for thieves, unfortunetly for people like me. (When I wrote this, Amazon had no copies, and used copies are around $55.)

I will eventually buy a copy, and do a real review after that. Just thought I would add this tidbit.

5 out of 5 stars Book of Treasures.......2001-06-22

This is a great book for those interested in antiquing, yard sales, flea markets, or just love the hunt for the perfect treasure. In Part I, the authors cover different types of collectibles: sporting goods, books, computers, clothes and more. In Part II, they discuss in depth, the business of owning a secondhand store as-well-as adding stories and tips from current secondhand store owners. I recommend this book for anyone who has even a slight interest in secondhand goods. If you want to sell treasures from home or rent/buy a secondhand store, this book covers it all. I found it easy to read and I picked up many useful tips for secondhand buying.

The book not only gives great business information but it gives the fun side of selling secondhand items, such as meeting new people and making money. After reading this book, it gave me the inspiration to continue with my dream to open a secondhand or resale shop which I'll be opening summer of 2000!

If you're interest in decorating and design leans toward funky, stylish, modern interiors, this is a book for you. I had some ideas circulating in back of my mind about the environment I'd like to create, but needed some help in putting it into motion. This book did help. I find the colors used in a funky interior cheerful and invigorating. You can find new ideas for old, uninteresting pieces of furniture just by painting them enlivening colors, adding casters, and saving yourself money in the long run. I look forward to more from this author!
