Book Description
"Marks the debut of a very gifted writer.... Kenan speaks eloquently and with a great deal of courage."--Gloria Naylor
Randall Kenan's daring and innovative first novel weaves a vivid and horrific tale through the generations of a black Southern family.
Sixteen-year old Horace Cross is plagued by issues that hover in his impressionable spirit and take shape in his mind as loathsome demons, culminating in one night of horrible and tragic transformation. In the face of Horace's fate, his cousin Reverend James "Jimmy" Green questions the values of a community that nourishes a boy, places their hopes for salvation on him, only to deny him his destiny.
Told in a montage of voices and memories,
A Visitation of the Spirits just how richly populated a family's present is with the spirits of the past and the future.

A brilliant novel........2003-12-06
"A Visitation of Spirits" is a portrait of Horace Cross, an adolscent both black and gay. This is an angry, often confrontational, novel dealing with the psychological ramifications wrought by religious condemnation, gross hypocrisy and clergy that myopically perverts scripture by preaching hate and intolerance.
The story is communicated through a series of recollections. Reality and memory coalesce in a nightmarish, drug-induced psychosis. "A Visitation of Spirits" is a haunting novel of a young gay man wrestling with his demons. His struggles are universal; his solution is, unfortunately, both tragic and final. This is a work of incredible depth, passion and understanding.
Randall Kenen, who won a Lambda Award for his short story collection "Let the Dead Bury Thier Dead," is an enormously talented prose stylist. He brings together the best qualities of James Baldwin, Carson McCullers, Toni Morrison and Flannery O'Connor. Higher praise could not be offered.
insightful view of rural community life.......2002-09-10
This is a powerful novel with a complex construction that takes effort on the part of the reader - chapters occur in two series of events that are identified by date and time as well as "confessions" that review particular lives. The book's strength is in showing the successful rural black family's attitude towards whites and in showing the role of the church in their community. The plot line holding it together is that of a talented teenager unable to come to terms with his homosexual orientation, sure that it will damn him in the sight of God. The context for this self-damnation is set by his deacon grandfather who raised him and who counsels members of the community, his great aunts who assist in raising him who are mothers in the church, and his preacher cousin - the religion which runs through the family is a stern religion with the backbone that allowed his family to succeed.
Within this framework, we get wonderful prose describing the disappearing culture - house raisings, pig slaughters... - and the "new culture" of racial intergration. We see several generations attempting to adjust to the new world while retaining their family values. All in all a book well worth the time required to read and savor it.
Masterpiece.......2001-11-06
When I reached the last page of this book, and I turned back to the beginning and started over. I have never read a book that so profoundly moved me. Kenan's name should be a household word. He has written a book that lets the reader feel what it is to be black, gay, and shouldering the burden of hundreds of years of family expectations. At the same time, his story is accessible to readers who are neither black nor gay, but simply human beings. Read this book!
Ghost times.......2001-04-24
Horace Cross is struggling with his small town's suffocating atmosphere, his family's expectations, and his own homosexuality while it's condemned by his religion. He finds an escape, of sorts, by delving into sorcery, and he conjures a demon spirit which spirits him back through his life as if he's Ebenezer Scrooge. His cousin Jimmy is a reverend living with the memories of his deceased wife, as well as struggling with his own inner demons. Interwoven in these tales is the story of not only the Cross family, but also of the disappearing ways of life in the South, most specifically the lives of African-Americans in the South. It's a potent, rhythmic narrative that draws the reader further and further into Horace's painful tale. I stumbled through some of the beginning pages, but it certainly became more accessible as the book continued. Considered one of the 100 Best Lesbian and Gay Novels, Kenan's "A Visitation of Spirits" is certainly worthy of that distinction.
Stunning debut, underrated writer.......2000-04-18
Although this book is over ten years old, its currency is not likely to be questioned for many years to come. Kenan gives readers a peek into a rural North Carolina town very much like the one he was raised in. There we find the Cross family, generations old in this same small town, steeped in the traditions of the region. At last, a true black sheep emerges in the family, in the form of Horace, who we see struggling with his identity, from his bookishness to the biggest of all issues, his homosexuality. However, the tale Kenan tells is far from predictable; readers will not find the usual story of a young man coming of age under such circumstances. Instead, everything from family rivalries and resentments to teen angst make Kenan's novel a rich portrait of small town life, in addition to its undeniable status as an affecting tale of one of the most harrowing struggles a young person could face. In addition to a compelling story, Kenan is a true artist, as there are passages in this novel that left me awestruck. I honestly read parts of this book numerous times. I cannot find the superlatives to speak as highly of this book as I want to. Randall Kenan is a supremely talented author, and I truly believe that work like this will bring him much acclaim in the years to come. Ultimately, I leave you with one thought: Buy the book.

Not a bad first step into the world of Warhammer novels.......2006-08-04
As a longtime player of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, I just recently began reading Black Library novels. Grudge Bearer was the first novel I chose out of many available; I simply grabbed the first book that looked interesting.
I was expecting light fare about dwarfs, and that's what this story delivers. The tale centers on the dwarf Barundin, king of Zhufbar, as he inherits the responsibilities and grudges of his father and ancestors. The glimpse into dwarf life was a treat, and as a roleplayer I certainly came away from the book with a richer understanding of these tough folk.
The storytelling weakens during the vital battle scenes, which read like highlights from a Warhammer Fantasy Battle game on the tabletop. While most of the narrative follows Barundin, the descriptions of battle tend to focus on special units on the battlefield. To be sure, there are plenty of passages where our protagonist gets in his axe-swings, but more often the focus seems to be on special enemy units which have a habit of being terrifically devastating, only to suffer some malfunction that helps to turn the tide of the battle.
But these are minor flaws. This story has momentum, and even the lack of a readily identifiable villain doesn't stop this from being an enjoyable read. (I might argue that the greatest opposition Barundin faces is his own inherited set of grudges, which he tackles one by one as the story develops.)
Overall, Thorpe kept my interest and provided much of what I expected. I wasn't disappointed, and found myself racing through the last 100 pages. I wouldn't recommend the book as a work of literature (the reason for my 3 star rating) but I think it will be appreciated by those who enjoy the Warhammer world to begin with.
An easy read, somewhat entertaining.......2006-06-23
This book made for an easy read, but do not expect to be enthralled by it. The best part of the book are the scenes of every day life in a Dwarven hold and the drunken revelry. The book is worth the purchase price.
Decent little book about decent little Dwarves that swing a mean axe!.......2006-04-16
Among Fantasy books, I prefer ones that have non-humans as the main characters. That's why I was overjoyed to find this book that focuses in particular on the Dwarves. They had always been my favourite part of "The Hobbit", and I always felt that Gimli wasn't given enough attention and was kind of relegated to just a supporting character in LOTR (especially in the movies). After devouring everything published so far in William King's Warhammer epic Gotrek & Felix "Slayer" series, I was left hungering for more of the Stunties.
Although we were given just a brief glimpse of a Dwarf Hold in William King's "Dragonslayer", this book takes us right inside the daily life of one such underground city stronghold of the Dwarves. In particular it focuses on the aspect of Dwarven (Dwarvish?) culture that deals with grudges, and their great relish in carrying them on for generations if need be in order to finally settle perceived wrongs against them.
There are epic battles aplenty in this book, with the Dwarves facing off against Orcs, Skaven, massive Chaos hordes and even....each other? But one part that had me questioning was that the Dwarves are depicted as very bloodthirsty when in the course of carrying out a grudge, so much so that they would even be willing to massacre innocent women and children. I wonder....?
Still, on the whole I would say that I enjoyed it and it's a pretty good book, and would rate it overall a 4.5 -- Well worth checking out while you're waiting for William King to get busy and give us more Gotrek.
Outstanding Dwarf Book.......2006-02-24
This book was a very well thought out story. I truly enjoyed this book and almost read it in one sitting. If you are searching for a good Warhammer book to read and you enjoy stories about dwarves try this book.
Ancestors, grudges and beer.......2005-12-10
Grudge Bearer is an awesome read for those interested in Warhammer Dwarf mentality, society, culture and mores. The book centers on King Barundin as the main character but spans many centuries where we witness the creation and settling of major grudges both immediate and inherited. We have a quick glimpse of events before the War of the Beard in the beggining and have a short insight on race relations from the point of view of a dwarf. We are also shown how ancestors, grudges and beer are such inescapable parts of dwarf culture. I give it 4-stars cuz the grudges settled in every chapter got a bit repetitive. Granted this is a book focusing on dwarf culture but it could have been so much more.

Not my favorite.......2003-05-01
I read the other books in the Flinx series years ago and enjoyed them. This one was only fair-to-middlin'.
The characters seems wooden and two-dimensional. The plot line was predictable and didn't seem to have much content. The emotional communication portion was overdone and a fairly tedious. There just wasn't a lot there.
Perhaps it's just my tastes have changed...I'll have to go re-read Tar-Aiym and Mother Not to see...but this one just seemed a bit pro forma.
Probably the most polished Flinx book.......2001-10-20
Finx in Flux is probably the most polished Flinx book. Clearly Foster learned a little more about writing between this one and the last (The End of the Matter). This is another direct sequel in which we find Flinx rescueing a beautiful gengineer (genetic engineer) who is under assault by eco-terrorists. The character development in Flinx in Flux is much richer than the other Flinx books, but what really set this one apart (for me) was the dramatic conclusion where Flinx learns of the existence of a great malevelolence, perhaps great enough to destroy the entire universe. Sadly, that is no delved into very deeply, instead leaving that open for another novel.
Fun Read.......2000-02-20
I just finished re-reading the book again for the umpteenth time. As always it was a great read, I really enjoy the Flinx series in the common wealth. Flinx is such an interesting character to watch develop. Just a note as to the comments below that the author is not going to be writing any more Flinx novels, that is untrue. Another one will be out latter this year(2000), or early next (It is titled Reunion).
I liked Clarity.......1999-09-26
Flinx is 19 and about to fall in love. While on Alispan, releasing Pip's children he see's a beautiful woman washed up along a rivers edge. When she wakes up he finds out that her name is Clarity Held and a group of fanatic tree huggers are trying to distroy the business she works for. She is a gengeneer (genetic engineers) who makes plants and fungus, etc. into marketable things. Flinx decides to help Clarity, whom he has fallen in love with. Unfortuntly he tells her, as an explination of why he can't be with her, that he is an experiment from the Melioraire Society and has an unpridictable sixth sense. Clarity's boss finds out and kidnaps him and wishes to exploit his talent. Sadly enough Flinx and Clarity never truly get together. That really riled me. Finally I'd like to tell a previous reviewer that Foster is not cutting off the Pip and Flinx series, he still hasn't answered all the questions that keep his fans coming back. Eli@
Childhood Favorite.......1999-05-01
It was a terrible disappointment to learn that Flinx in Flux was the last in the series. Such an abrupt-like ending! When I was a young teen, I read the Tar-Aiym Krang, then moved to For Love of Mother Not, then Flinx in Flux, then Bloodhype. I didn't follow the "chronological" order, but I loved the series anyway! There was something in me that identified with Flinx, he was a hero to me. Over the years, I read other books by Alan Dean Foster, also set in the same universe as the Flinx and Pip series: Cachalot, Voyage to the City of the Dead, etc. Each were wonderful books, but they were also my way of associating with the series even though it had ended.
Yet, I guess in a way, the series HAD TO end. Foster wrote of Flinx the young child in a loving, caring way... but also knew that Flinx could not be like that forever. Very likely, with this last book in the series, he deliberately propelled Flinx into the seriousness of adulthood to bring about a sense of closure.
I'll never forget that Pip loved salty snacks (she needed the NaCl to make that special corrosive poison), or that the "fish" in Oboweir could make Earth whales feel as tiny as goldfish, or that furry cuddly bearlike creatures on a cold, cold world could be such adorable prodigies...

Book Description
La Vita Weaver, an ordained minister and fitness instructor, knows firsthand how being overweight affects every aspect of one’s life. During her own battle with extra pounds—she gained eighty following the birth of her first child—she found herself struggling also with profound emotional and spiritual problems. Once a size five, she had skyrocketed to more than two hundred pounds, and her sense of self-esteem and well-being plummeted to an all-time low.
After trying countless diets, she began exercising at home, playing Gospel music to keep her going. Before long, she was reciting Bible verses and singing hymns during her routines. Not only did she shed pounds and build muscle, but Weaver had gained an unexpected benefit—her exercise sessions had become precious times of praise, prayer, and inspiration. Now, the only thing she didn’t like about exercising was when she had to stop!
Weaver’s sessions in her living room grew into a video series called Hallelujah! Aerobics and, ultimately, a fitness plan designed to meet the needs of the whole person.
In FIT FOR GOD, her inspirational voice and her expertise as the leader of hundreds of successful fitness workshops are woven together in a highly effective eight-week program of diet, exercise, prayer, and praise. Combining solid nutritional information and exercise routines with inspiring passages from the Bible, her program will encourage even the most reluctant workout candidate to follow her example and embrace the rewards of becoming “fit for God.”

Spiritual Health for the Body .......2007-05-09
I love this book. It has all the information in it to address the inner, spiritual aspect of health and dieting and exercise. We live in a world that cries, "Lo here, and Lo there" when it comes to dieting and the newest gimick and secret on how to lose weight. It could be dangerous for our health, but that doesn't matter when it comes to padding the financial pockets of greediness. This book addresses the right attitude, the right focus and the right way to battle this enemy we call "fat, unhealthy and out of shape". Weight loss is a spiritual battle, whether we know it or not. Why put just a bandaid on something that is festering deep within the soul? I highly recommend this book !

"I'VE MET THE MINISTER/AUTHOR IN PERSON".......2005-10-14
Her True life testimony is very powerfeul and all that she has gone through. I heard her speak on October 1, 2005 in Virginia and boy was she powerful. Not until she put GOD first did her fitness for life work out. I'm buying the book today and will come back with my result after reading the book. I must say if her book is anywhere as powerful as her VHS tapes ministering GODs work through song, dance, praise and exercise it's awesome. I am now working out with 2 of her tapes and can feel the power of exercising with spiritual music. You have to be focused on GOD first before your Fitness Life will work for.
Disappointed.......2005-09-23
I'm always looking for ways to improve my life based upon God's ways and that is why I chose this book to help me improve my health. However, I was very disapointed in this book. It was more of a personal story instead of an instruction book on how to get and maintain better health. After the first few chapters, I finally stopped reading the book because it took too long to get to the point.
Do all things in His nameý.......2004-06-23
I thought I had read and seen everything there was to see to on the subject of
weight loss. I have even tried a multitude of plans, which in the end promise
the same results with similar methods. Most of these plans and methods will
work for a little bit of time, but none of these plans have or promise what
FIT FOR GOD does - a relationship with God. La Vita Weaver brings
inspirational energy to a field that is filled with assurances of better
health and bodies that often leave people feeling hopeless and like
failures. In FIT FOR GOD, Weaver shares her story of food addiction and how
she finally took control of her health.
FIT FOR GOD outlines a plan for living that is Biblically based and supported
by scientific information. Weaver marries the weight loss struggle with your
personal relationship with God. She suggests a number of motivational
techniques that are designed to let the person grow spiritually while
developing better eating and exercise habits. She presents the plan as an
eight week journey which could take longer depending on where you are
emotionally in your fitness journey.
Although Weaver utilizes some of the basic tools of the trade i.e.,
journaling, increasing water intake and exercise, she couples them with
biblical scripture that brings new meaning to getting fit. One of the things
that make this plan workable is that the author encourages readers to change
their view of things. For example, week two is on increasing water intake.
Weaver begins this section by discussing the significance of water in the
Bible she then segues into personal anecdotes on how she increased her
intake. She shares that she calls water "glory" then pointedly asks
readers, "Have you had your glory today?"
FIT FOR GOD is weight loss from a Christian perspective that eliminates the
hopelessness of failed weight loss methods.

The first half of the book alone worth the price.......2004-05-28
I'm not even done with the book yet, but I have to say, I am really enjoying it so far. When Pastor Weaver describes her life...the troubled upbringing, the poor life choices, the panicked feeling of not being able to help herself...I can relate. When she talks about her approach to dealing with the pain...I can relate. When she states that the solution is in God FIRST, and getting into His Word, I am nodding my head enthusiastically. I feel that this is what God has been telling me for a while now. I'm just a slow listener.
Her eight week plan starts off with preparing yourself through scripture first, and I think that that is extremely important. For most of us, the thought of dieting again is filled with anxiety and panic. We try to do it under our own power, and for me, that has never, ever worked for the longterm. I highly recommend this book for Christians, especially women. And for anyone else willing to hear the message in it.

Pleasant 'coffee table book' on cartography.......2006-06-17
This pleasant casual book on cartography is richly illustrated. Particulary appealing are the reporductions of the atlas maps in situ, with the atlas open to the map and the other pages and edges of the cover visible. Along similar lines, several closed atlases are pictured allowing one to view the cover and clasps. Also interspersed throughout this text are cartouches and title pages.
I would not consider this an authoritative review of cartography. For example the maps illustrated from the monunmental 1513 Waldseemeuller Geography include two maps of Africa, and a map of Crete, hardly considered among the most influential maps from that Atlas. Nonetheless, this is a pleasurable book, richly illustrated, with an emphasis on the visual not written experience.
Note that this book was reprinted in the U.S. in 2000, with the title "Mapmaker's Art", a more appropriate title given the book's emphasis.

Not your average bead book--very creative.......2001-04-08
There is enough variety of ideas here to stimulate anyone's creativity. There is a found-object bead (using bits of old buttons or jewelry), folded metal beads, wooden beads wrapped with seed beads, felt beads, polymer clay beads and more. The gallery of bead creations is inspiring.
I won't be using all these techniques but a lot of them were breakthrough ideas. A very interesting book.

At last, Jane Dunnewold's stunning design ideas are in full-color print! From afar, I have admired Jane's surface design for many years. Although I have never taken a class from her, her freewheeling style has always inspired me.
A few years ago, Jane and SABOS member Renita Kuhn collaborated on an exhibit of wearable art at the Southwest School of Art & Craft. Jane and Renita used embellished cloth to create clothing that glowed with imagination.
The main message of the book is to play, as if you were a child, with materials of all sorts. Jane asks you to look at the world around you - the way a tree bends or the texture of a rock. Everything can become a source of ideas for design by their shape, feel, composition, whether the material is stiff or pliable. Craft stores are shunned by many artists and should not be ruled out. They, too, can be a springboard to another idea.
Jane's book reminds you of your Kindergarten class. Everyday, found materials can be made into beads. Whether the resource materials were meant to be used to make beads will be of no consequence. You can make beads with them anyhow. Prepare to be surprised!

Feng shui is an ancient Asian art that revolves around object placement in the home, garden, and workplace. In fact, feng shui specialists claim that the flow of chi (or energy) in the environment can directly affect our health, relationships, career, and even our checkbooks. Even toilet placement can affect the happiness of a marriage or the luck of young children. "In feng shui, chi is viewed as the ever-present force that circulates and moves in the environment," writes author Lillian Too. "...and wherever chi settles it brings a special kind of energy that attracts good fortune."
Written as a lively, comprehensive guide to feng shui, this 360-page book is full of practical suggestions, stunning line drawings, lavish photographs, and just about everything you'd ever want to know about this age-old Chinese art form. The eight-part encyclopedia covers topics as diverse as "Using Mirrors to Deflect Bad Energy," "Overcoming Bad Feng Shui When Traveling," and "Good Feng Shui Trees." It also includes a thorough feng shui dictionary. Even if this all sounds like mumbo-jumbo superstition, it still makes a fascinating coffee-table book. (Just be sure to place it next to a succulent potted jade plant to ensure prosperity!) --Gail Hudson
Book Description

Illustrated Ency. of Feng Shui: The Complete Guide to the Art and Practice of Feng Shui.......2005-09-30
One of Lillian Too's best books. Good for beginners and for those with some knowledge. Found it very helpful and easy to understand.
The bottom line of Feng Shui.......2003-06-24
The bottom line of Feng Shui
Time ago I decided to select and buy the 5 best Feng Shui books I was able to find, after several months of research (I had already bought another 5).
Maybe the best books on the subject are those in the realm of the so-called "traditional Feng Shui" (that is: F.S. using a compass, your birth date, the date of construction of your home, and some complex formulas to arrive to conclusions about the effects of your home over specific areas of your life). On the other side, "Western Feng Shui", in general, ignores the compass and takes the entry door of the home as the base for any further analysis, and uses mirrors, wind chimes and other cures to fix any existing problem. (Of course these are crude descriptions, F.S. goes far beyond this!!)
In this book, Lilian Too includes all her knlowledge on Feng Shui, based in what her experience has shown to be effective. I must stress this: based ONLY in what her long experience in F.S. has proved to be EFFECTIVE. And the result is a mixture of formulas and procedures from Traditional Feng Shui (mostly) and some "cures" and "boosters" that you will find also in "Western" F.S.".
Well, the point is that at the end, I found myself using this book more and more than any other I have. The reason? It simply works, and works in the deep and in the simple. So I left the deep T.F.S. literature for later, Western F.S. was absorbed in a couple of evenings, and in the meantime I'm using, applying and enjoying what this book shows, more than any other I've found.
Now I have some mixed comments:
-Lilian has written specific F.S. books (F.S. for love. F.S. for success, F.S. for the home, for the garden, etc. etc.) in those books she makes a complete analysis of every subject, but you can find the bottom line in this book. You might not need anything else (at least for a while). People buying these specific books may sense that they include almost the same information...
-The book has many illustrations and tables that make reading easy.
-I was not only amazed, but SCARED when I applied the "flying star formula" to several homes of people I know, it described circumnstances you thought were simply natural, but at the end seemed to be an effect of the kind of plan and location of things there.
-In some instances, it explains very easily with pictures, principles from traditional F.S. that I found hard to retain in memory when reading other books
The Most Comprehensive Book I have ever come across.......2001-02-12
I would like to thank Lillian Too for the most fabulous book on Feng Shui that I have ever come across. The author has taken great pain in explaining the details, with illustrations and pictures, on all pages. Each and every page of this book is worth its weight in gold!
Keep up the good work!!
Encyclopedia of FengShui by Lillian Too.......2000-10-28
I read a few other books before I found Lillian's Too's book. This encyclopedia has helped me put everything together. I got so confused to have read different FS, there's the Indian FS, the Western FS, the Japanese FS, I also was surfing the net and just read whatever was there. Thanks to Lillian, it all then finally made sense why other FS contradicted each other. It's also good to know that you can also use FS principles/cures from other FS as above in different rooms in your house. This is an excellent excellent book, anyone starting in FS should not be without.
This is not a good book !.......2000-07-26
This is not a good feng shui book because it only teaches a very basis.

"When I went back two years ago, standing in the place where they came to kill us, I showed my daughter and my grandson, 'This is where my ashes are supposed to have been'" says 70-year-old John Klein, one of the 50 survivors of the Nazi concentration camps who recount their horrifying stories in When They Came to Take My Father. The book was edited by Leora Kahn, a photography editor, and Rachel Hager, an editor at Parents magazine. Photographs are by Mark Seliger. The editors have wisely allowed the power of the testimony within to emerge. "Everybody knew that if you didn't get up for roll call, they would take you to the gas chamber," remembers Rosa Strygler. "One day ... I left my mother knowing that when I came back she would not be there. And she wasn't."

"This is where my ashes are supposed to have been".......2004-12-11
This is a rather different book on the Holocaust. It is the summaries of the interviews carried out with 50 people who survived the Holocaust. These interviews were done in the mid 90's with survivors who are in their senior years;many who were born over 80 years ago.Several of the people were the sole survivor of a large family.Included are excellent portraits of all these people. It is obvious that they have heavy hearts when remembering the terrible injustices they experienced.
Some of the thoughts expressed:
"We were counted like gold, treated like s---."
" know that the bulk of them went straight to the gas chambers
because I saw it that day kneeling on the stones."
"The hope of everyone was to see the Germans beaten."
"The sign of a free man is being able to keep your hands in
your pockets."
"We were loaded on cattle cars-jammed full-and shipped to
Auschwitz."
"It was a daily lottery with death, and I happened to win."
"If they nail me,you can have my shoes."
"Those who say we should forgive and forget, have nothing to
forgive and nothing to forget.I cannot forgive,I cannot
forget."
NEVER AGAIN!

Book Description
He's just My Dad! is an engaging collection of more than 200 captivating photographs featuring celebrity athletes and their children. These stunning at-home and behind-the-scenes images were captured by an eminent team of photographers led by internationally renowned photographer Sam Abell.
Diane Long's interviews of the athletes and their families provide revealing, humorous, and sometimes surprising insights into the parenting styles of these sports legends.
Devoted father and esteemed author John Grisham embraces the spirit of He's just My Dad! and shares his thoughts on fatherhood, professional athletes, and his own baseball career.
All-star dad and basketball legend David Robinson reflects on the worthwhile challenges of fatherhood in his touching afterword.
This book will entertain, delight, and show that heroes still exist. Their kids know who they are. From the carpool lines, the backyards, the homework tables, and the local parks, you can hear the children lovingly say, He's just My Dad!

not what it appears to be .......2006-12-13
He's Just My Dad: Portraits of Celebrity Athletes and Their Children seemed to be a very interesting idea. I envisioned striking black and white studio portraits of famous Athletes that, within the same image, contained and contrasted them with their children. Instead it as though the reader is presented with a collection of family photo albums that have all the quirks of point and shoot photography.
That being said, the book does have several interesting aspects that do work well within the project. First and foremost is the text. The foreword by John Grisham was a different, but truthful, way of viewing professional athletics. The infusion of fatherhood into this foreword makes it the perfect introduction to the book, and nothing else truly needed to be said after Grisham's foreword. Furthermore the quotations say so much more than the imagery. The quotes that are selected, very easily convey the theme that fatherhood is more important than the athletic achievements that these professionals achieve. Another interesting tidbit of text was included in the sidebar of each athlete's page. This sidebar contained statistics and achievements of the professional while in athletic competition. This is very helpful when the reader has no clue what one of the athletes is famous for, or what sport they play. On top of that, photos where the environment echoes the fathers sport, or at least alludes to it, are the most interesting.
Unfortunately, the basis for this book is supposed to be the photographs, which fail to meet any expectations that one has for a project such as this. First of all is the technical skill. There are some extremely low quality images published in this book. There are the on camera flash synch speed photos, which produce a black void surrounding the subjects; seen in the Scott Stevens section. Other photos, such as the Gary Gaits' images are overexposed and burned out. Other images are exceedingly noisy. This is most apparent within the Wayne Gretzky section of the book. Being that Gretzky is one of the most famous athletes in the collection and therefore the most likely to be looked at, these photos are the worst. They are filled with grain/noise and are highly underexposed. That being said the images appear as though they have been taken with a really old point and shoot film camera, using high ISO, expired, color film.
Because of this the images feel very snapshot like. There is an eye for certain moments within the frame of some of the photos, but I feel that the moments are easier to see and ultimately capture for one who has experienced being a parent. In a way they become a parental snapshot of a father and his children. What makes this so difficult to look at is the inconsistency of photo quality. One reason for this is that many different people were hired to act as photographers for the book. This means that one single idea isn't followed exactly the same way throughout the project, resulting in varying interpretations of the theme. Another thing that hinders the book is the fact that there are very repetitious images throughout each section. There are three of about 5 images of Roger Clemens and his kids wrestling in the same location and at the same time. There a multiple images of another father fishing with his kid that looks like the images were taken within seconds of each other. Instead of family vacation photo album shots, a wider diversity of imagery or fewer stronger images should have been used.
Overall, He's Just My Dad: Portraits of Celebrity Athletes and Their Children, failed to set out what it hoped to embody. It's obvious that the warm and fuzzy idea of a father and his children, within a loving relationship, appeals to consumers. However it fails to live up to expectations, and provides the viewer with low quality images, some of which wouldn't even appear in a family photo album.
Perfect Father's Day Present.......2000-05-20
Dianne Long's "He's Just My Dad" is an example of a good idea done with perfect execution by the perfect person. This coffee table book about famous athletes and their kids is great fun. And, while the kids quotes and the pictures and the terrific short biographies are colorful and upbeat; there is also a sense of poignancy in the book. Reading Dianne's description of her husband Howie as a father is moving...As is seeing the late 19 year old Adam Petty in the book with his dad Kyle. One note: several of the athletes find great comfort in the fact that when they come home from work, their young children don't care about the outcome of the game. They love them regardless. It is this unconditional love that shines through every page of this text. I also like how no mention is made of adopted children (like Dan Marino's child), or dads in the book who have been divorced (Bill Walton, for one). This book could have been called "Daddy Dearest"..except there would be no sarcasm attached. This book is really is about the deeply attached fathers. Who happen to be great active or retired athletes. Buy it for Father's Day. Even if your dad isn't a sports fan.
