Book Description
Eric Banyon, better known as Bedlam's Bard, has just discovered that he has a younger brother named Magnus whom his parents have kept secret from him. Just as Eric did years ago, 17-year-old Magnus has run away from home to escape his disfunctional family. Determined to find him, Eric finds himself caught in a desperate race against time. Young homeless children in New York have created a bizarre mythology about a demon called Bloody Mary who preys on young children-and somehow Bloody Mary has taken on an independent life and now stalks the streets of the city. Eric's friends, the Guardians seem powerless to stop her. Anyone who sees her is marked for death. And Magnus has seen her. . . .

average is about right.......2007-03-02
In this sequel to "Bedlam's Bard," and "Beyond World's End," Eric Banyon discovers the existence of a younger brother, who has run away from home, and sets out to find him. His brother, like him, has the Bardic gift, which makes locating him tricky. His brother, meanwhile, has taken up with two runaways, a girl called Ace, and an elf, Jaycie, both of whom are fleeing their own private hells. And as usual in these books, there is a Dark Force, this time one who is preying on street children. As a shelter volunteer, Eric's friend Hosea, who is also a gifted Bard, becomes aware of this. With their friends, both elven and human, they seek to find this monster and protect the city's homeless children.
Like the other books in the series, this one has way too many minor characters, especially with sound-alike names. There is a Tatiana, Juliana and Oriana for starters. After awhile, even the most attentive reader might lose track of them and how all the minor plotlines connect. However, it's a decent read for die-hard Lackey fans.
STATUS QUO FOR THIS SERIES.......2003-10-21
MAD MAUDLIN is Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill?s latest installment in the Bard series. As such it adequately represents the series for what it is; a thoroughly average fantasy story. Although well written, the least one would expect from these two veterans, the story itself suffers from a serious case of the blahs.
What makes for an exciting, above average story? How about new and imaginative situations and plot line? Maybe character development and growth. Unfortunately we get neither in this particular volume.
Plot: lets see, Overhill, the human world, it threatened by death, destruction and domination by forces of evil including an evil elf lord, evil human magician and of course shadow forces within our own government. Eric, with considerable help from Ria, and the Guardians defeat them. Sound familiar? Probably does, if you change the names and a few of the faces it?s the same plot from BEYOND WORLDS END and SPRITS WHITE AS LIGHTNING. Or to quote Eric?s brother Magnus ?Things always this much fun around here?? The reply being ?Usually it?s quite for, oh, months at a time.? I?m not saying it?s boring but it does get a bit repetitive after awhile.
How about character development? I don?t see much here. Eric is basically the same as he was in BEYOND WORLD?S END. A couple of new characters are added, or fleshed out from earlier story lines, but the core characters exhibit very little change or growth. Ria, the workaholic half elf, is shown to be very much in love with Eric, although for her denial is not just a river in Egypt, however his feelings still seem to be at best ambivalent. Must be nice to have a beautiful, filthy rich girlfriend that you can use for casual sex and treat as furniture or an ATM, maybe there is something to this Bard business after all.
Anyway there really isn?t much new here. Just an average pleasant story good for passing a few hours. I would RECOMMEND it but probably only the die-hard fans will find it of more than passing interest.
:::sigh:::.......2003-10-09
This is one of those books that let you know you have a good friend in the author. I had this book preordered when it came out, and tore through it the night and early morning I got it. Lackey and Edgehill get better and better each time they work together. Eric has left behind him occasionally obnoxious whining and self pity, His brother has managed to figure out his parents are scum, with out going over the edge into all people are scum. The other characters are rich, and full, even the elves seem more real in this book. I canýt wait for the next one.
I LOVE This Book!.......2003-10-03
I have always been a fan of the Eric the Bard series. What modern fantasy fan wouldn't love the mix of magic, music, elves and old world legends? Add in one of Misty's greatest crusades (helping children in trouble), and you've got a great read in "Mad Maudlin".
Eric is once again facing a hurdle in life. This trial, perhaps, is his hardest: facing his troubled past. Let's face it, everyone has wounds inflicted by past pain, and facing that pain down is an act of courage. Eric has to confront his parents... and learns a shocking piece of information in the bargain.
In the meantime, Hosea Songmaker and his haunted banjo Jeanette are out and about the city of New York, with Hosea doing what he can to bring the gift of music to the city's homeless children. In the shelters, he learns a set of "Secret Stories" about a murderous ghost, Bloody Mary. This urban legend turns out to be a lot more than Hosea ever guessed.
And, of course, there is a trio of troubled runaways. Ace, who ran from her father's greedy ministry. Magnus, who left a stifling home. And Jaycie, who can come up with rolls of money out of nowhere and spends his time scarfing down blocks of baker's chocolate and cans of Coca-Cola. (Sound familiar to anyone?) These three find themselves bound up in a lot more trouble than trying to find a relatively safe place to live.
There are poignant references to 9/11 that had me literally in tears. These references gave me new perspectives on our national tragedy, and helped me gain more learning and perspective about it.
All in all, I loved this book, and I can't wait for the next.
Runaways and the Sidhe.......2003-10-02
Mad Maudlin is the fifth novel in the Bedlam Bard series, following Spirits White as Lightening. In the previous novel, Eric and the Guardians manage to conjure the spirit of the dying Jeanette into Hosea's banjo. They also trap the vengeful Aerune in a maze, with the help of a dragon and Jimmy's spirit, cutting the Paranormal Defense Initiative off from their source of magic. Moreover, Fox finds the means for Kory and Beth to have a child.
In this novel, a child of the Unseleighe runs away to the World Above, pursued by his worried guardian. Heavenly Grace, the daughter of gospel preacher Billy Fairchild and the secret of his success, runs away and he is determined to get her back. The teenage son of a proper Cambridge couple runs away to become a rock musician.
In New York, Hosea and Jeanette discover that the youngest street children are telling the Secret Stories about Bloody Mary with more fervor lately, then the Guardians link these stories with a series of mysterious deaths within the city. Eric is doing so well in therapy that he decides that it is time to confront his parents in Boston and finds out more than he expected: a younger brother. Some older street children have gathered together around three runaways -- Ace, Magnus and Jaycie -- in the Place; they follow the rules or Ace will not buy them food and other supplies (with money from Jaycie). A conman gathers a cadre of gullible people and build up their magical power to assist him in his ambitions.
In Washington, Ria is gathering allies to destroy Parker Wheatly's reputation and organization. Parker unwittingly helps her by kidnapping a minor wizard to restore his source of magic.
This novel revolves around the search for the runaways in New York. It involves a mythago, a Prince of the Unseleighe, a conspiracy against the Guardians, and an previously unknown kinsman. It mostly takes place in New York from the Battery to Mid-town, much of it in the world of the street children.
This novel continues the adventures of Eric, the Bedlam Bard, and brings hims new friends and enemies. It is overflowing in magic, errantry and suspense. A sequel is forthcoming.
Highly recommended to Lackey and Edghill fans and to anyone else who enjoys urban fantasy.

some of the best sci-fi stories ever.......2007-03-23
I'm a long-standing fan of the writings of James H. Schmitz, the author of a number of remarkable science fiction novels and stories originally published between 1960 and 1974. I enjoy them for their bold female characters (surprising even by today's standards), for the author's deft handling of psionics, and for his surprisingly accurate forsight of certain technologies such as cell phones.
Many of Schmitz' writings fall into one of two universes and have many interlocking characters. He wrote one set of tales set in the universe of the "Agent of Vega" series (the one in this book). He created a different universe in the "Federation of the Hub" series which includes over two dozen stories and novels. His writings exist as eight novels and fifty-odd stories in several collections, most of which have thankfully been reprinted by Baen books.
Agent of Vega was originally published as a book-sized collection of four stories based on material originally published 1949-51 in Astounding Science Fiction Magazine. It was subsequently published as a book several times. The four stories in the original book were Agent of Vega, The Illusionists, The Truth about Cushgar, and The Second Night of Summer.
Those of us who had treasured flea-bitten old copies of the original books were thrilled when Baen books republished these stories.
MILD SPOILERS:
The first three stories center around Iliff, a seasoned Zone Agent who is an expert trouble-shooter in the employ of the powerful but over-extended Psychology Service. His assignments are doled out by the Third Coordinator, a highly competent boss whom Iliff loves to despise. The Third Coordinator sends Pagadan, a representative of a new species, to apprentice with Iliff. And when she arrives, Iliff finds himself trailing after his old nemesis, U-1. Iliff is extremely well-balanced mentally about everything except U-1, who once defeated him and left him for dead. The Third Coordinator has evaluated, and uses, Iliff's sensitivity about this humiliation. Iliff knows how he is being manipulated and hates it, but he hates U-1 enough to endure it.
Zone Agent Iliff's disgruntled cynicism, and the razor-sharp dialogue between him and his boss, the Third Coordinator, make this a very fun read. The situations which the Zone Agents investigate are also quite intriguing. These are "good" psi cops chasing "very bad" runaway psi's who are menacing those around them and could only be stopped by other psi's. The bad gize have to get very bad indeed before the Psychology Service gets motivated to send someone after them. As usual, Schmitz' plots become very creative yet stay within rational boundaries.
I found the first three stories very rewarding, and the last one a little less so. The last one deals with a different Zone Agent who is not quite as captivating as Iliff.
An answer to a prayer.......2003-01-29
I have an original Pocket paperback of Agent of Vega. It came out in 1962, which makes my copy more than seven years older than I am. I found it on the shelf of a mechanic's office in Pickens, Mississippi, while waiting with my father for the overhaul of some cotton picker parts. I was 8 or 9. I started reading the book, and then begged to have it. My father was angry, but the mechanic was amused and let me have it.
That book has been loved. Not only by me, but I have loaned it to many people.
If this volume was nothing but a reprint of that earlier one, it would be enough for me to jump with joy and give copies to all my friends who love science fiction. But it is better than that. The four stories that comprise Agent of Vega are only about one third of this volume. The other two thirds are stories I have NEVER seen before.
Schmitz was one of THE most popular SF writers of his time. Unfortuantely for posterity, his work was mostly at shorter lengths. Even his only full length novel, the wonderful Witches of Karres, was an expansion of an earlier novella.
Kudos to Baen for reissuaing in seven volumes the complete works of this master. Schmitz was one of the first SF writiers to have female characters who not only solved their problems without male assistance, but were "total badasses" on their own.
Which brings me to my favorite story in this book, called "The Second Night of Summer." Not only is the undercover galactic agent female, not only is she unflaggingly competent, she is also old enough to be a grandmother. How many SF writers even now would risk this, let alone in the fifties when the story was written?
If you are a fan of classic science fiction, you owe it to yourself to check out these reissues of one of the masters.
The Best Ever.......2001-11-11
I haven't bought this book yet, and so don't know what other stories it has other than the four "Agent of Vega Stories". It doesn't matter. These four stories (collected in 1960 and issued as a book called "Agent of Vega"), constitute my favorite science fiction book of all time. I own all of the pulp stories and the First Edition and all paperback editions of this collection. It's utterly spectacular.
This is not a novel; but four separate stories about these future galactic secret agents known as "Galactic Zone Agents". They all possess "psi" (telepathic) powers and communicate mentally with their robot ships; each agent having a ship which is to some extent bonded with the agent's mind.
In these stories Schmitz displayed, 50 years ago, a concept which would dominate his writing; the hero who is female. He was soundly critized for this, in those sexist days, but as a male I accepted them wholeheartedly and immediately. They are magnificent, deadly, intelligent, and ruthless.
The third story, "The Truth About Cushgar", is my favorite story in all of science fiction.
The imagination and descriptive prose Schmitz displays in these stories is incredible, and the excitement and characters unforgettable.
I picked up a paperback of this book in 1962, when I was 15, and nothing has ever compared to this work of science fiction for me. Most famous for his Telzey Amberdon stories, and his "Witches of Karres" novel (my favorite Sci-fi novel); Schmitz created these Agent of Vega stories in the span of a few years around 1950, and never again returned to this "universe" or these amazing creations. I've always lamented this, though a jewel is often more brilliant for its rarity.
The first story has a male hero, but soon we are introduced to a young female humanoid alien known as "Pagadan", who has feathers for hair. She is in the first three stories, and stars in the second one. In the third story we meet "Zamm", a different type of humanoid alien female who is the most ruthless killer of all the Zone Agents. In the fourth we meet a harassed old woman on a primitive world known as Grandma Wannatel; but she also happens to be a Zone Agent, and she is something tough.
The villains are fascinating, and the technology spectacular in these books, which are as good today as they were half a century ago. Battles and weapons and mental contests abound in these stories.
I simply cannot recommend this book highly enough, and will soon buy it. Even without the additional non-Vegan stories, this book is priceless.
Sense of Wonder again.......2001-10-28
For golden age galactic space opera this is simply as good as it gets. Memorable, larger than life characers, awesome intrigues and really alien aliens. I loved the maverick agent with the yellow eyes and special ship the most. Don't miss these stories.

makes the altar impure,,,.......2007-06-18
tithes and offerrings is Gods only system to bless his people, people are to be taught to give willingly not by threat of a religious system, but give in relationship, this book highlights great points but..., its without true clarity, do we tithe, do we give offerrings, the answer today is YES,,,,,
A Must Read by those wanting to know truth.......2006-06-13
This book was very informative and well written. It should be read by every one who wants to know the truth about tithing and giving.
BEYOND TITHES AND OFFERINGS.......2004-09-03
These two men were armed to the teeth when it came to knowlege of different sacrifices etc. They even had a good handle on the unscriptural tithing part. My problem with the book came with the compromise that the authors made by implying that even though tithing is unscriptural we should give money to these local reprobate goat factories (churches) anyway.
Freedom.......2004-07-23
This is by far the best book that I have read on the subject and I have read a few. The authors examine the doctrine from just about every possible angle. Very tastefully done. I highly recommend this book.
Good News.......2004-06-14
I believe that the authors did a great job. A majority of the people will never believe that this is a very scripture based book. I could not stop reading this book and it sheds so much light on tithing. I will say that in the last chapters, everything that was mentioned about pastors was true. I have had a pastor say that it would be hard for him to put in his tithe that Sunday, because of low funds, well this book points out the fact that you shouldn't give grudgingly. Final words, magnificent and hope to see more of your writing. God Bless
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, but more recipes less introduction........2003-03-30
I started with the Food of Asia, which I think is excellent. I decided to check into some specific cuisines, such as Indonesia, of the seven cuisines that are presented in the Food of Asia. I am a little torn.
The individual books in the "Food of" series by Periplus have extensive introductions. There are not as many recipes as I had hoped for. The ingredients list, along with the accompanying commentaries, are about the same, with an equivalent number of photos, as the Food of Asia. The Food of Asia contains many of the recipes, however, some do not have a photo.
The variety of main ingredients is pretty good, with recipes such as: Tempeh Stew, Hot Spicy Fried Tempeh, Water Spinach with Spicy Sauce, Vegetables with Spicy Coconut, Fern Tips (or Asparagus) in Coconut Milk, Stewed Eggplant, Lobster in Yellow Sauce, Simmered River Fish, Spicy Fried Sardines, Eggs in Fragrant Sauce and Pandan-style Eggs, plenty of chicken recipes, Duck Curry, several satays, Ginger Pork, Porked Cooked with Tomatoes and Seasoned Fried Beef Slices.
However, the Food of Asia contains some recipes, such as Balinese Squid, that do not appear in the Food of Indonesia. Also, the substitute of asparagus for fern tips is found only in the Food of Asia.
The ingredients list is thourough, with substitutions for (or omission of) many hard-to-find ingredients, but is a little more stringent than other books I have read. For example, shallot or onion was offered as a substitute for asofoetida in a different book, whereas here no substitute is given. On the contrary, macadamia nuts are suggested as a substitute, or even almonds or cashews, for candlenuts. The books on separate cuisines do not have such substitutions.
A word of caution, many of the ingredients are difficult to find even online. There are also several "fresh" ingredients, such as kaffir lime leaves, salam leaves, duan kasum, etc, that have to be shipped fresh and stay for only a short while. Most of the recipes in Food of Indonesia require many of the hard-to-find ingredients. Other cuisines, like Thai and India, have more availability of authentic ingredients as well as spice mixes that really help save time.
I think that the Food of Asia may be a better starting point. Make sure that you can find the hard-to-find ingredients from some Indonesian store or many of the recipes will be lacking. I have been able to make most of the recipes that I was really interested in, such as the tempeh, sardines and asparagus, but with a bit of difficulty coming up with all the ingredients.
Hope this helps.

Insightful.......2007-04-29
This book can give you a glimpse into the American antique trade. Focusing on three different pieces of furniture, he tells of the story of how it was created, where it's been and why it was up for sale. I enjoyed learning about how people browse and buy things and of the passion some have for a certain style or maker. It's an introspective book with a unique insight. The only criticism is that there were no pictures of the objects mentioned. This was frustrating as it made me curious about them.
Great read, great writer.......2006-11-02
Even if you're not already interested in American antiques, if you enjoy excellent nonfiction writing, try this book. Unlike so many contemporary writers of nonfiction, Freund does not focus this book on himself but on a subject--the world of American antiques. By telling the stories of three different objects, the craftsmen who made them, and the collectors who owned them, Freund brings his readers into a quirky, fascinating world, where the desire for objects shapes people's lives. And if you have any interest in nonfiction writing, this book will give you lessons in the craft from a master writer.
Good, but who no photo of the Willing.......2003-11-07
This is a very good read, which I enjoyed as a woodworker/furniture maker rather than an antique collector/dealer. What befuddles in the extreme is why there was no photo of the Willing card table, I'd have loved to see the carving, as well as the rest of it. So I have to go to the library and dig up a couple of magazine articles (from the New York Times Magazine 1/16/94, for example) just to see it.
Pam
A Wonderful, Entertaining and Informative Book.......2003-06-02
This book is delightful--I've bought 7 copies over the years for friends and family. With its readable style, brilliant characterizations of the eccentric people involved and its nonfiction "plot," it SHOULD have been the next MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL. I suppose its relative lack of success is due to factors in the industry, but it's certainly through no fault of the book's. I heartily recommend it to anyone and everyone, even persons uninterested in antiques--for, while it IS about antiques, it's mostly (as the subtitle suggests) about PEOPLE.
Required Reading for ebayers & amazonian sellers!.......2001-06-27
It doesn't matter what you're selling, if you deal with any "objects of desire", this book is worth the read! Although it deals with the world of antique furniture, the principles apply equally as well to art, memorabilia, rare books, and you-name-it! The writer takes what at first appears to be a dry subject, and imbues it with the life and personality and drama that is normally lost in the translation to the printed page. Reads like a Steinbeck novel where the base motives, practiced deceptions, and blatant materialism are showcased side-by-side with the aesthetic beauty and artistic appreciation of a cultured society, to form a microcosm of the world of "objects of desire"!
Book Description
Both beginners and veteran folders will love this instructive volume and its clear directions and crisp diagrams. Readers learn the basic folds, one at a time, for 27 simple models (frog, star, piano, penguin), 12 intermediate designs (pig, kangaroo, camel), and 5 advanced models (deer, waterwheel, elephant, bee).

A fun place to start........2005-08-07
I've had a copy of this since it came out in 1969, and it has some of my favorite models. Years ago I made a mobile with the fish model and was pleased enough with the results to repeat it several times for friends. Although I've since progressed to other books which I like even better, I still treasure this one because of it's clear diagrams, gradual build up of skills, and delightful imagination.
Patience is a virtue.......2002-02-27
This book is "Step 1". I originally began with "the Great Origami book & kit", but ... that book is too advanced for beginners. It does offer, I believe, the best "Step 2" option to follow on your journey to master this ancient art form, but begin with THIS book.
It is more detailed that most origami books and leaves out no steps to the intricate folds you must master to proceed to the next (series of fold). The folds are very difficult for beginners and this book proceeds very slowly going over each and every tiny movement your hands must make. With origami..there can't be ANY mistakes. It is about perfection. If you are a fraction of a millimeter off on a fold, your product will not turn out professionally. I also recommend taking what I joke as "stress breaks" while proceeding. Many times I have become too frustrated, only to walk away from my project and return to see the mistake I made. My second tip is to BREATHE..the paper will not harm you, although at times you feel it's torture. Use this book and follow it up with a great kit like the one I previously mentioned...you will have two steps (a beginner and more advanced kit) for making a litter of cute creations.
Familiar Things From A Sheet Of Paper.......2000-11-15
Step by step - fold by fold, you will see a rabbit take form in your hands. Or it might be a squirrel. A Christmas Tree. Or the ever familiar 'flapping bird'. Dozens of shapes are taugh in this book. So get paper, scissors and your folding finger ready to create some intricate figures.
Teach Yourself Origami. By Robert Harbin.......2000-03-14
A classic book (originally of a set of four paper backs number 4 of which is quite difficult to get hold of!). Teach Yourself Origami has an easy to follow guide to folds, and contains some classic folds by a variety of creators. Akira Yashizawa's pidgeon is one of many facourites, along with the sanbow, squirrel, ostrich with rider (clever), Aladins Lamp (genious!) and a great one for the kids the clever sanpan (or the inside out boat). There are also some great classroom favourites: the waterbomb, colour changer and a variety of hats! This is one I would recomend for beginners and more experianced folders alike (and have given it out as a gift to many poeople) This is an absolute must for anyone interested in paperfolding !
