The three clans at once enabling and torturing each other in Ruth Ozeki's All Over Creation--the central Fuller family, the neighboring Quinns, and the rag-tag activist found-family known as the "Seeds"--lift a basic morality play about forgiveness to a higher level. But what really gives All Over Creation its steam and sends it off in unexpected directions is the supporting story of modern mankind's crucial but tenuous connection to nature, set in this case on a potato farm in sleepy Idaho.

Lloyd Fuller and his war-bride wife Momoko struggle to make their massive farm thrive. Teenage daughter Yumi, on the other hand, has no trouble blooming. She's a wild child, but a series of bad decisions lead to a protracted estrangement from her puritanical father. When, years later, the adult Yumi reluctantly returns to the farm with her three children to care for her ailing parents, she must confront the wreckage she left behind (and the wreckage she's made of her own life), while forging an uneasy peace with childhood friend Cass Quinn. Before long, the Fullers and the Quinns must also confront the radical environmentalist Seeds, who are convinced that dying Lloyd and delusional Momoko hold the key to propagating plant life on earth--and sidetracking the schemes of evil corporations--through smart farming. And they may be right. The abundant children on hand reinforce this theme of proper husbandry; they are, like nature, both a tremendous gift and a daunting responsibility. And while not every character--Yumi in particular--is likable, Ozeki, whose first novel was the funny and polemical My Year of Meats, provokes empathy through plain old humanity. Indeed, her ability to make us care deeply about the fate of these strangers is the book's most abiding grace. The story's conclusion takes some convenient outs, but the ride to the end is touching and terrific, thanks to the author's spare but elegant prose and, especially, her kaleidoscopic cast. --Kim Hughes, Amazon.ca

Book Description

My Year of Meats, Ruth Ozeki's delicious debut novel, won a devoted following and was hailed by critics as inventing a new genre: the “eco-saga.” Now, Ozeki takes us to the heart of the potato farming industry. When Yumi Fuller returns to her hometown after a twenty-five-year absence, she comes face to face with an old friend, her aging parents, and her conflicted past—as well as the “Seeds of Resistance,” a rollicking environmentalist group that finds trouble wherever they plant themselves. With a quirky cast of characters and a keen eye for the vicissitudes of corporate life, political resistance, youth culture, aging baby boomers, and globalization, as well as the beauty of seeds, roots, and all growing things, All Over Creation offers something for just about everyone.

3 out of 5 stars A Not So Hot Potato.......2007-07-12

I was intrigued enough by Ozeki's "My Year Of Meats" to give this sequel of sorts a try, to see if she could improve on her fresh, amusing satirical style. The result is a small improvement, but not in the way I had hoped and not enough to make me a fan; Ozeki develops her characters better in this effort. You could say that I have had "my month of Ozeki," and I've had enough.

"All Over Creation" is remarkably similar to "My Year Of Meats." It has the same set of quirky, flawed characters, the same fun sense of satire in the first part followed by the same kind of preachiness and tragedy in the second part. Perhaps Ozeki is a meat and potatoes kind of gal, given that her first novel is about meat and this second is about potatoes. But if you read these two novels and take them to heart, you may not want to eat meat and potatoes. How concerned do we really need to be? Who knows? But I do know that the much more serious danger to Americans' health comes from their general diet, not from tainted meat and mutant potatoes. Ozeki has a cute, spunky style that would shine more without the overreaching sermons and tragic melodrama.

3 out of 5 stars A Worthy Cause, But..........2007-04-12

I admire Ruth Ozeki for taking on serious social and environmental themes in her novels. She has doubtlessly done a great deal through her novels to make her readers aware of the destructive economic and social trends that are currently trasnforming our planet. Furthermore she accomplishes her campaign for public enlightenment with great subtlety.

Having said that I wouldn't rate All Over Creation as a great literary work. The major problem for me as a male reader was that the characters are way too 'cutesy' - you have protagonists with names like 'Puddle', 'Poo' and 'Yummy'. Then you have the portrayal of the activist group the 'Seeds' as nothing more than a group of lost, scummy individuals who epitomise all the worst cliches usually attached to hippy culture, including a teenager who appears to have suffered significant intellectual impairment at some point in his life. To make matters worse the plot is strung between lenghtly domestic scenes which see the book played out predominantly in the kitchen, sickroom and garden. While I realise that these aspects of the novel may simply reflect the fact that it is aimed at a specific demographic I still feel this sickly sweet aspect somehow detracts from the pace of the narrative and the overall feel of the book.

2 out of 5 stars A failed attempt at a sequel.......2006-12-05

To me this book feels like a failed attempt to recreate the wonderful "My Year of Meats".
It seems to have the same ingredients: environmental issues, feminine issues, leading characters with similar backgrounds, whacky supporting cast.
Unfortunately, this is not enough. The glue, the magic and most of the sharp humor of "Meats" is not there.
The result is a boring book and a huge disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging, Intelligent, Moving.......2006-11-06

I read My Year of Meats several years ago and loved it. I wasn't sure if I would feel the same about All Over Creation. However, Ruth Ozeki has managed to write another brilliant, sensitive and well informed novel. The characters are deeply human - idealistic and flawed yet somehow lovable. Ozeki manages to enlighten and educate on the subject of factory farming and genetically modified organisms without sounding preachy or self righteous. I did not want this book to end!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-09-12

I loved this book. If you've already read My Year of Meats, don't hesitate to read this as well. I'd have a hard time saying which I enjoyed more. Ozeki tells a great story but explores important topics as well...without ever swamping the story. She also has a great sense of humor. My only question is whether she's working on another novel. I hope so.

      Book Description

In the author?s own words: ?Do I really want to do this? Do I really want to write this book? What if everyone disagrees with me? What if everyone says; ?this guy has really missed the boat?? Nevertheless, I couldn?t ignore all the proof that lay in front of me. There was evidence from the Scriptures and history all telling me that for years I had been taught something that may not be completely true. So, it became increasingly important to write about what I had discovered. I?ve known for a long time that I?m not alone when it comes to questions about the subject of the Trinity. Maybe what I have learned might help someone else in their search for a better understanding of this subject. I?ve had questions about this from the day I was told, ?this is what you should believe. There is one God manifested in three persons. You can?t fully understand it, you just accept it by faith.?

      2 out of 5 stars Poorly researched.......2001-07-10

I would first like to say that I admire Mr. Graning’s desire to write what he believes to be the truth despite the fact that he has undoubtedly opened himself up to much criticism. While I am sure Mr. Graning has done a considerable amount of research in the area of the Trinity, there are a few points that he should/could have worded or stated better.

One area where he errors in when he tries to describe the primary beliefs of God. He states first that there are those who believe “Jesus...was an angel, created by God as the first of His creations. This is not something new. This teaching finds it’s roots in the teachings of Arius in the 4th century.”(pg 13) Those who have studied this subject will quickly recognize this as being incorrect and, amazingly, Mr. Graning quotes the Encyclopedia Britannica to this effect. It states, “Here Arius joined an older tradition of Christology, which had already played a role in Rome in the early 2nd century –namely the so-called angel-Christology.” (Pg 83) So this belief was held at least in the early 2nd century among persons whose lives undoubtedly crossed the lives of some apostles, long before Arius arrived on the seen. He also defines the Oneness Pentecostal beliefs (Jesus is Father, Son and Holy Spirit) and states, “They, I suppose, would be called ultra Trinitarians.”(pg 13) I doubt many Oneness Pentecostal’s would appreciate that title. They are commonly referred to as “Oneness” believers, “Modalists” or their faith could be labeled “sabellianism.”

One thing I did enjoy about the book is that he uses more scriptures than the average book on the Trinity. What would have been helpful would have been a scripture index. I had a number of scriptures pop into my mind and I could not find a quick way to determine if he discussed the scriptures I had questions on.

A point Mr. Graning made that I certainly agree with is his argument that too often Trinitarians try to read into a word a definition or meaning that is not really there. Mr. Graning believes that we should take a verse for what it says and not try to play word games, altering the meaning of a term to fit our doctrine. My hat is off to him for this stance. However, I feel Mr. Graning may have ignored his own rule in his handling of the term “firstborn.” He first states incorrectly that the term “firstborn” means “the first to be born. That’s what it means everywhere else in scripture. The word is used more than one hundred times in Scripture and it simply means, the one born first.”(pg 18) However, we note that the term does NOT mean the “first to be born” at Jeremiah 31:9, Exodus 4:22 or Genesis 48:13-20, to mention a few. In these verses the one called “firstborn” apparently designates their being given a supreme position over others. He ignored the fact that words, at times, do have symbolic meanings such as Jesus separating sheep from goats or wheat from weeds. In some instances he term “firstborn” is symbolic of a favored position one has been placed in.

Still, I do agree with Mr. Graning that the term “firstborn” at Col 1:15 is literal like it as at Col 1:18. However, he writes, “what does “firstborn” mean? It certainly does not mean first created. There is nothing in the Bible to suggest that Jesus was anything other than absolute Deity.”(pg 17) Of course, the fact that he even brings up this argument signals that the term “firstborn of creation” must cause some persons to understand Jesus as being the first one created. He has already started to leave his rule that “A word used repeatedly to mean one thing couldn’t suddenly take on a different meaning. This would violate the simple ability to understand the writer.”(pg 18) But who can deny that if we had no preconceived belief that Jesus was Almighty God we would automatically understand this verse to mean that Jesus was the first one created? The phrase “firstborn of all creation” creates an immediate picture of a group (creation) with Jesus being the first of that group being born. How does Mr. Graning get around this ‘simple understanding?’ He states, “Creation and birth are not one in the same. They are entirely different.”(pg 17)

And thus we get on the same word “merry-go-round” that Trinitarians like to use. After reading that sentence on page 17 of Mr. Graning’s book, I combed the rest of his book desperately looking for exactly what the difference was between creation and birth. I found no explanation of the difference and I leave his book extremely disappointed because of this. While some may argue that my mother ‘did not create me, she only gave birth to me’, I can state whole heartedly that I did not exist before I was born from my mother. Therefore, I reject such arguments as philosophical. Mr. Graning also does not explain what he means by the term “eternity past”, which he used a number of times to describe when Jesus was “born.” Many modern Bibles describe this term as “time indefinite”, meaning a very long time ago but not everlasting. I would like to quote his words on page 98 where he states of Jesus, “He was not created, He was begotten, birthed, brought into existence.” To common people there is no difference between the terms “created”, “begotten”, “birthed” and “brought into existence.” How one can say that Jesus was not “created” but he was “brought into existence” is beyond my ‘untrained in seminary school’ mind. In addition, he did not mention Rev 3:14 where Jesus is described as the “beginning of the creation by God”, which seems to be an important part to the discussion.

Another error that Mr. Graning makes is in regards to the term theos and the definite article. I mean “error” in that he violates his own argument, even though it is possible that he is correct in his arguments. Allow me to explain. After discussing the term theos and the definite article, he states on page 31, “But when the definite article is used with theos it always means the Supreme Deity, God the Almighty. It is interesting to note that not one time in Scripture is the definite article used with Theos when speaking of the Son of God.” This may or may not be true, depending on the interpretation of John 20:28 where Thomas says, “My Lord and my God.” The term God (theos) is preceded by the definite article. While it is debatable as to whether Thomas was referring to Jesus or to his Father as theos, Mr. Graning assumes it is in reference to Jesus. And he nicely explains in his book how others can be honored with the title theos due to their God assigned position. But if Mr. Graning believes Jesus is the one being referred to as theos at John 20:28, then how can he say that “not one time in Scripture is the definite article used with Theos when speaking of the Son of God [...]

              4 out of 5 stars a tale of development.......2007-08-09

This is a great story, well developed characters, belivable environment. A classic tale of a young persons' growth from a scared kid to a secure adult. Moon has the ability to describe life in a miltary organization. Not everything is exciting, some days and weeks, are just drudgery. All in all a book to keep and to reread.

              5 out of 5 stars You'll love it too.......2007-07-16

I read this series years ago when it was originally published. I lost the books over the years. I'm so glad I made this purchase.

              5 out of 5 stars A personal favorite.......2007-06-14

Quite simply, this is one of my all-time favorite books. It has defined the genre (epic fantasy) for me. I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars One of the strongest heroines in literature--not just fantasy.......2007-05-02

Elizabeth Moon cannot write a bad book. She knows her stuff having once served in the military. She also researches and acts out her scenes with meticulous care.

As a result, she gives us Paksenarrion, a farmer's daughter who rises to become a Paladin and a heroine.

I read this book long ago--actually, these were some of my entree into fantasy and they lead me to read other greats in the genre, including Tolkien. Cannot recommend this series highly enough for those who love heroic fantasy or military fantasy.

3 out of 5 stars OK but No Middle Earth!!.......2007-05-01

I was hoping to get into the magical world of Middle Earth but couldn't find the door here. It's fun to read a book about a strong female character but this is in no way close to Tolkien's Fantastic World. Saying she is the heir to Tolkien is a gross overstatement and I am glad that I had bought it used for 5 bucks. This book feels more sci-fi style less fantasy in her presentation of dialogue and character develpment. So I continue my quest for Middle Earth and will re-read LOTR yet again.

                    5 out of 5 stars Delightful!.......2007-09-09

I'm afraid the person who gave this book a low rating was expecting something else. This book is not a cookbook, though it does have a few tea recipes. This is just one of its many features.

If you've ever sat to tea with loving friends or inhaled the steamy fragrance of tea heating on a stove, you'll have an idea of how soothing and peaceful this book is. Along with the beautiful paintings of tea settings, there are quotes, pretty short poems, and stories about friendship and getting together with loved ones. That is the point of this book: to celebrate spending time with friends, preferably over a delicious tea :)

If you're ever over-stressed or simply want a lovely and cozy reminder of love and beauty, this book is the perfect one to sink into. A beautiful book in every way!

2 out of 5 stars Really What Is This Book About??.......2006-05-10

I was given this book for Christmas this past Christmas 2005.

In my opinion it's one of the worst books I own. The pictures are great, but otherwise I have no use for this book.

It has a few poems, and a few comments from some people, maybe a one or 2 tea recipes, but nothing that makes me happy to have this book.

This book does not inform you on how to serve or host a tea party for your friends. Not very informative at all about tea parties in my opinion.

I think this is a book of personal preference. If you can preview this book before purchasing it...I strongly suggest that you do to see if you would like to own it.

This is not a book I would reccomend.

                    5 out of 5 stars Charming.......2005-11-15

I thought this would be just another overly sentimental gift book, until I took the time to actually read it and appreciate the art. I could feel my stress melting away as I spent time looking at each page. I am making a list of friends who will be receiving this charming book for Christmas this year.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Information.......2005-09-26

As a lure collector, I have several identification guides.
This book gets used more than the rest, simply because it is more an identification guide than a Value guide. (Sure, it has book value included(which means nothing compared to auction values), but, it also has way more information on the lures and companies themselves than most other ID books).
If you are looking for a complete library (if you want almost any lure identification at your fingertips--or in your head , as you learn about them all--), then you should definately include this one.
But (always a "but"), this book doesn't cover too many of the "small name" companies out there, or folk arts, nor many flies. But, if it's a top name company (Heddon, Creek Chub, South Bend, Shakespeare, etc.), you will find it in this book, up until 1975.
You cannot go wrong with this book...and if mine ever wears away with use, I'll keep purchasing new copies as needed.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT AND WELL DONE.......2005-02-21

This is one of the better guides. I really could not do business without it. You certainly will not be wasting your money on this one. Highly recommed it for the collector, dealer and those just interested.

my husband received an old tackle box full of lures from a friend who just did not want it any more. we knew there were some from the early 20's to 40's,other than that we knew nothing about them. we found several books we thought might help us. we had a tough time deciding between this one and several others on amazon. at the last min we decided to get this one and are we glad. has wonderful history, easy to use index. it is a wealth of information. we have identified dozens of tackle. this book is HIGHLY recommended if you have alot of old lures.

I've learned a lot about old fishing lures by browsing through this book. It is well worth it. I rated it four stars because some of the black and white pictures are not clear, and descriptions were a little too brief, although this could be because that's all the author had available to him. If you're new to collecting this is a great starter book.

                      Book Description

The first in a brand-new series, each focusing closely on a specific faux finish. Whisper Painting is a popular style that’s soft, subtle, and easy to do, and with these ample photos as a guide, anyone can give plain walls, furniture, and home accessories beautifully understated decorative finishes. The projects showcase 30 different techniques, and start with such simple, unintimidating processes as tracing, decoupaging, ragging, and dragging. Add texture to a mantelpiece with dimensional paint; antique a brand-new mirror so that it looks like a Renaissance work of art; and reproduce an aged stone wall. Introductory sections provide paint and color basics, and each project is labeled with one, two, or three paintbrushes according to difficulty.

Carl Larsson (1853-1919), and his wife, Karin, a textile designer, revolutionized interior design and established a style that continues to attract a worldwide following. Combining period furniture and objects with modern color and design, their home was meticulously recorded by Carl in a series of beautiful watercolours that celebrated their idyllic family life.

                        5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......1999-07-24

Aside from the fact a reader will gain new appreciation for the Larssons and their art, a reason to purchase this book is that it is gorgeous. Good paper, excellent color reproductions, a nice heft. If you admire Larsson and Scandinavian culture, this book is a "must have."

5 out of 5 stars This book makes me happy........1998-07-11

I ordered this book sight-unseen as a gift, and thought "well, I like Carl Larsson's paintings, I'll get one for myself while I'm at it." I'm so glad I did! I realize that, before reading this delicious book, I had never really "seen" a Carl Larsson painting before. I didn't know that all those happy Swedish ninteenth-century domestic watercolor scenes actually documented Larsson's home and family, and I had no idea that his wife Karin was the creator of the fabrics, co-creator of the furniture and equal partner in what is not only a beautiful and original home environment, but one that has influenced interior design to this day, a hundred year later.

The text is written by different experts. I am not really sure that I come away from it with much sense of the Larssons' personalities in a detailed way, but the work speaks for itself and I consider this book to be more than just a valuable addition to my art library, but also as a great read and, even more -- a great "look".

Usability design is one of the most important--yet often least attractive--tasks for a Web developer. In Don't Make Me Think, author Steve Krug lightens up the subject with good humor and excellent, to-the-point examples.

The title of the book is its chief personal design premise. All of the tips, techniques, and examples presented revolve around users being able to surf merrily through a well-designed site with minimal cognitive strain. Readers will quickly come to agree with many of the book's assumptions, such as "We don't read pages--we scan them" and "We don't figure out how things work--we muddle through." Coming to grips with such hard facts sets the stage for Web design that then produces topnotch sites.

Using an attractive mix of full-color screen shots, cute cartoons and diagrams, and informative sidebars, the book keeps your attention and drives home some crucial points. Much of the content is devoted to proper use of conventions and content layout, and the "before and after" examples are superb. Topics such as the wise use of rollovers and usability testing are covered using a consistently practical approach.

This is the type of book you can blow through in a couple of evenings. But despite its conciseness, it will give you an expert's ability to judge Web design. You'll never form a first impression of a site in the same way again. --Stephen W. Plain

                              Book Description

Five years and more than 100,000 copies after it was first published, it's hard to imagine anyone working in Web design who hasn't read Steve Krug's "instant classic" on Web usability, but people are still discovering it every day. In this second edition, Steve adds three new chapters in the same style as the original: wry and entertaining, yet loaded with insights and practical advice for novice and veteran alike. Don't be surprised if it completely changes the way you think about Web design.

                              Three New Chapters!

"I thought usability was the enemy of design until I read the first edition of this book. Don't Make Me Think! showed me how to put myself in the position of the person who uses my site. After reading it over a couple of hours and putting its ideas to work for the past five years, I can say it has done more to improve my abilities as a Web designer than any other book.

In this second edition, Steve Krug adds essential ammunition for those whose bosses, clients, stakeholders, and marketing managers insist on doing the wrong thing. If you design, write, program, own, or manage Web sites, you must read this book." -- Jeffrey Zeldman, author of Designing with Web Standards

5 out of 5 stars A thin book with everything you need.......2007-10-13

This book is excellent. It's very accessible and easy reading without being superficial. It's not a usability cookbook, it actually makes you understand its principles and gives you critical sense to analyze any website and see what's wrong (or right) with it.
I just couldn't find any negative points about the book.

I'm not a designer and I would by nature make many of the mistakes Krug points out in this great book. Krug's reasoning and reasoned approach that he presents in this book is invaluable.

This book on internet usability has not only changed the way I design websites, it has changed my thinking on many areas of life. The other day I was asked to review a print media item and I kept saying to the designer - "Don't Make Me Think!" The idea of designing easy to use, simple to understand websites is so simple that it is often overlooked. This is a fantastic read. I'm halfway through my second reading of it.

5 out of 5 stars Mandatory reading for developing on the Web.......2007-09-28

As it promises, Steve Krug's Don't Make Me Think: 2nd Edition, is a quick, but extremely usable, guide to Web usability and design. The book took me less than a day to read (less than 3 hours), but has become, in my mind, a requirement for even beginners (like myself) of Web design. Since everyone who develops for the Web should have some idea of design and usability, this book should really be a mandatory requirement for said work.

In short, there's no reason not to read this book if you're developing for the Web (writing content, programming, etcetera), or working with a team that does so.

4 out of 5 stars Good content, poor binding.......2007-09-27

Others have said that Krug's book (2nd edition) is for those with little experience. That is exactly why I found it so useful. There are lots of concepts that are common sense, sure. But until they were pointed out I had not even considered them. His point about the usefulness of tabs was particularly useful to me. I am creating a site now and will incorporate them into my design.

My only complaint is with the binding. The book was so poorly produced that pages began to loosen and fall out before I was finished with the first reading. I am now looking for a big rubber band to hold everything together. I just hate it when that happens.

Inspirational yet honest, and always rhythmically rollicking, Oh, the Places You'll Go! is a perfect sendoff for children, 1 to 100, entering any new phase of their lives. Kindergartners, graduate students, newlyweds, newly employeds--all will glean shiny pearls of wisdom about the big, bountiful future. The incomparable Dr. Seuss rejoices in the potential everyone has to fulfill their wildest dreams: "You'll be on your way up! / You'll be seeing great sights! / You'll join the high fliers / who soar to high heights." At the same time, he won't delude the starry-eyed upstart about the pitfalls of life: "You can get all hung up / in a prickle-ly perch. / And your gang will fly on. / You'll be left in a Lurch."

But fear not! Dr. Seuss, with his inimitable illustrations and exhilarating rhymes, is convinced ("98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed") that success is imminent. As long as you remember "to be dexterous and deft. And NEVER mix up your right foot with your left," things should work out. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter

                              Book Description

As he is driving home from a minister's conference, Baptist minister Don Piper collides with a semi-truck that crosses into his lane. He is pronounced dead at the scene. For the next 90 minutes, Piper experiences heaven where he is greeted by those who had influenced him spiritually. He hears beautiful music and feels true peace. Back on earth, a passing minister who had also been at the conference is led to pray for Don even though he knows the man is dead. Piper miraculously comes back to life and the bliss of heaven is replaced by a long and painful recovery. For years Piper kept his heavenly experience to himself. Finally, however, friends and family convinced him to share his remarkable story.

4 out of 5 stars Incredible story of a man's faith in God!.......2007-10-19

He was pronounced dead, and yet, he was alive! His life returned in another world, heaven, for 90 minutes. This experience changed his life and many others who read or was told about this incredible event. It is a story of faith, of hope for the rest of us. This man was not pain free as he returned to this world, he suffered physically. But his spirit was alive and his faith changed many, many lifes. You won't forget it and it will change your life forever!

2 out of 5 stars Not so much.......2007-10-19

You think you're going to get a BOOK about the afterlife, but no, you get one chapter, and then the rest of the book about his religious beliefs. It was disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Could NOT put this book down! Awesome Book!.......2007-10-19

I don't really know what led me to reading this book to begin with, but I will tell you that once I started reading it - I couldn't put it down! I expected the description of heaven to be glorious. The scripture at the beginning of each chapter was comforting. I felt like writing each verse down as it's easy to forget! I was pleasantly surprised by all the lessons and the personal account of Don's recovery and the lessons he still had to learn. Any person who is struggling with a terminal illness, has recently lost a loved one or has sustained any big injuries NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK! I will buy several and hand them out. I finished reading this book this AM and have already lent this book to my BOSS! This book reads well and is written in such a manner as if Don was he's telling you in person! Would recommend this book to anyone - Christian or non-Christian.

2 out of 5 stars God chosen one? REALLY!.......2007-10-18

I picked up this book because I was facing yet another heart cath and thought what a good read for me. I also had a NDE and was sent back to human life. I enjoyed the book until the last chapter. SO, ONLY Don was pick by God to tell of his experience in heaven? Others like me are making our experience up? Excuse me, our God doesn't choose just one man to serve him and tell of the afterlife or of HIS love for us. Self serving to make money is what Don Piper is doing here folks. God loves us all. Piper will be in my prayers.

This is a truly amazing book. I had trouble putting it down before I finished it. Very inspiring and encouraging. What a story!! I'd highly recommend to all. I've shared it with many people.

I have been wanting to get the Bible on cd so that I could listen to it on my drive to and from work. I had seen The Bible Experience on amazon and itunes - and was excited that it was a little more intriquing than one boring monotone voice. I hesitated for awhile because I wasn't sure that all the different voices and music would be too corny and kid-like (I'm 23).

I finally decided to buy it on Amazon, and I love it! It is not too corny/dramatic. I challenge anyone who has a commute to work, or is on the road a lot to get these cd's. Fill your mind with God's word instead of morning radio talk shows, etc. If you want to hear a sample of what it sounds like - go to itunes and look it up.

Inspired By the Bible Experience: The New Testament is the most remarkable audio Bible I have ever heard. From the very beginning, my attention was captivated by the sounds that add to the sense of reality. My sense of hearing was completely engaged not only with the actual action of each chapter, but also with all of the background activity that adds life to the verses. Additionally, there were some soul-stirring performances. At times, I felt what the performers must have felt - certainly the intent of a true artist. All of the part selections were well made...but Blair Underwood as Jesus...BRILLIANT.

5 out of 5 stars LISTEN TO JESUS!.......2007-10-13

I've listened to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in The Bible Experience mp3 version for 4 weeks, over and over. I can't stop! They are INCREDIBLE! Did Jesus really say THAT?! Was He really that hard on the religious leaders of His day? How could anybody miss what He was saying? He repeated Himself so many times!

Listen to Jesus's Words being spoken with the inflections He most likely used! The meaning of His Words become clear in ways I've never understood before!

It is amazing to me that He never rebuked the women who came to Him, even the sinning ones, but treated each with respect. There were crowds of women following Him, ministering to Him from their own wealth. Many were wives and mothers-- but here they were, following Jesus all over the place-- for YEARS! Jesus says over & over, "He who loves children, or house, or family, more than Me, is not worthy of Me." And He includes those hundreds of women who "left all and followed Him" in order to minister to Him and the Apostles. How different that teaching is from today, where pastors feel obligated to remind women of 'their place'. 'Their place', as I hear Jesus say it, is right there beside HIM! Who did He first appear to after His resurrection? Not the apostles, but the women! Later on, He rebuked the apostles sharply for being cowards! But He gave the women this special honor because they loved Him and did not abandon Him!

Woe to you, church leaders, if you will not go out of your way to help a sister in the Lord with any problem she brings you! Jesus never turned a woman away or spoke down to her! Jesus would never say "the problem in your home is YOU and your extreme devotion to God!" Yet how often I've heard this preached from the pulpit and on the radio! This is the opposite of how the Lord dealt with women! Take heart, sisters, we can cling to Jesus' Words and follow HIM! It is the religious leaders of our own day who Jesus is rebuking, just as He did back then!

Listen to Jesus' Words as He speaks to the apostles about children! Can any pastor ever deny a child a seat in his sanctuary after hearing THAT? Woe to you, arrogant church leaders, who wince at the cries of little children, and demand that all children under a certain age be taken OUT! You enjoy the sound of your own voices more than the simple Words of Christ!

Listen to Jesus! It will expose the Christian phoniness we're bombarded with everywhere! It will ruin you for any other kind of teaching! Hallelujah! No wonder He was labeled a heretic! No wonder the religious leaders got so mad when they heard Him that they demanded His death! His Words were like slaps in their faces and they didn't like it! They were infuriated!

Beware of the leaven of the religious leaders in our OWN day!

                              LISTEN TO JESUS!

This CD set delivers the New Testament in a way that spoke to me. It is more than a Bible reading but a story that comes to life with the reading of each chapter. Listening to the voice inflection, tone and tempo married with the background sound effects provides a backdrop for you to visualize the time, location and circumstances that this biblical story takes place. Enjoy the word and discover new insight through the experience of this CD set. It is well worth the money and I can not wait to hear the Old Testament too. [...]

                              Book Description
In October 1985, at age 27, Danny Meyer, with a good idea and scant experience, opened what would become one of New York City's most revered restaurants--Union Square Cafe. Little more than twenty years later, Danny is the CEO of one of the world's most dynamic restaurant organizations, which includes 11 unique dining establishments, each at the top of its game. How has he done it? How has he consistently beaten the odds and set the competitive bar in one of the toughest trades around?

In this landmark book, Danny shares the lessons he's learned while developing the winning recipe for doing the business he calls "enlightened hospitality." This innovative philosophy emphasizes putting the power of hospitality to work in a new and counterintuitive way: The first and most important application of hospitality is to the people who work for you, and then, in descending order of priority, to the guests, the community, the suppliers, and the investors. This way of prioritizing stands the more traditional business models on their heads, but Danny considers it the foundation of every success that he and his restaurants have achieved.

Full of behind-the-scenes history on the creation of Danny's most famous restaurants and the anecdotes, advice, and lessons he has accumulated on his long and ecstatic journey to the top of the American restaurant scene, Setting the Table is a treasure trove of innovative insights that are applicable to any business or organization.

Service with a Smile: Dishing with Danny Meyer
Is the customer always right? According to Danny Meyer, one of America's leading restauranteurs, the answer is no--but "they must always feel heard." Named one of the most influential New Yorkers of 2006 by New York magazine, Meyer, the founder and co-owner of 11 of Manhattan's most influential restaurants, including Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, Tabla, The Modern, Blue Smoke, and Shake Shack, has penned Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality, a business book that reads like food lit and equal part personal memoir. Amazon.com senior editor Brad Thomas Parsons took some time from his daily long-distance day-dreaming of Shake Shack and caught up with the ever-gracious Danny Meyer over e-mail to ask about his new book, the Food Network, his favorite cookbooks, insider tips on dining out, and much more.

“It's an autobiography! If I tell you what's in it you won't read the book.” — Claire Drainie Taylor

Or would you? Maybe you'd be intrigued by the progression of a life begun as an unexceptional little girl born to a middle-class Jewish Canadian couple in a small prairie town who, at age sixteen, married a refined Englishman, and survived the Great Depression, partly alone in a shack in the woods of Vancouver Island. Or how, only a few months after returning to Vancouver, with no training and minimal education, this same young woman walked on stage at one of Canada's finest old theatres, and went on to a successful thirty-year career as an actress and radio dialogue writer.

Having been compelled by her family to write her memoir, it wasn't until she'd finished and reread her manuscript that Claire Drainie Taylor realized what an extraordinary life she'd led. Her descriptions of the many fascinating incidents that make up her story, and how she dealt with them, revealed herself to herself in a way that illuminates what she calls “The Surprise of My Life.”

As a child of the praries I could relate to Claire Drainie Taylor's early life. It was almost like reading about my own upbringing. The bone chilling winters and the vast expanses of prarie sky and field. But it was the rest of her life story that really grabbed me. 3 husbands, 6 children, and an acting career - this woman had an interesting life! I liked her breezy and witty writing style. I thought this would be a womans book and I had intended to give it to my mother, but as I got hooked into it, I realized it had broad appeal. I would recommend it for anyone who wants an entertaining read about a person you never heard of.
