...and Christina Adam has met that challenge quite handily. I have never read anything by this author before, but after enjoying ANY SMALL THING CAN SAVE YOU as much as I did, I'll certainly keep my eyes open for more of her work.

Not a novel at all -- the book is subtitled 'a bestiary' -- the vignettes presented here are nonetheless related in various ways. A couple involve the same characters -- given away by their names -- and others might as well, although this is really unimportant in the scheme of things. All of these pieces depict poignant, memorable moments in the lives of the people involved -- some might even be described as epiphanies. All of the selections are relatively short -- making this a book that's easy to read in short bursts, in several settings, without losing any of its impact. In fact, in retrospect, I think I probably got more out of it reading it that way than if I had burned through it in a single sitting -- taking my time allowed me to reflect on each of the pieces, making my reading experience much more rewarding.

True to the subtitle, each of the entries involves an animal -- usually interacting with the people involved, though sometimes more in the background. Adam's choice of this form for her book is a curious one -- but one that she has embraced and embodied with a great deal of life and meaning. As another reviewer below noted, she definitely set a challenge for herself in writing this book in this style -- it'll be interesting to see where she sets the bar for her next lengthy work.

From its wonderful title to its powerful final story, this collection defies the very limitations the writer has imposed on herself. Ostensibly there is a gimmick at work here: each story includes (and is usually titled with) an animal that begins with a different letter of the alphabet. In the hands of another writer this device might force a writer to include weaker stories in the name of the "fulfilling the assignment," but Ms. Adam's has such a gift for language and scene, for finding the precise moments when two people connect or don't connect, that one actually forgets the original conceit. It's only when you come back to it after reading most or all of the book--when you think about all the ways the animals and humans have been circling around each other--that you really appreciate what a triumph this collection represents. I eagerly await this writer's next work.

disappointed.......2006-06-19

while i love weis and hickman, this series was a huge disappointment. i was so swept away by the Death Gate Cycle that i didn't even second guess that these book would be good. the story had no drive and the main character was very confusing to me. he was conflicted and he never grew beyond his past. i felt that alot more could have been done to develop the characters and make them stronger. the world that they created was beautful, but the people weren't as vivid. i highly recommend the Death Gate Cycle, those books will not disappoint you.

Early stages of Weis/Hickman.......2004-06-04

If you want a lot of interesting, evolving plot, this book has it. It's an early trilogy by Weis and Hickman and it shows. It's a fantasy meets sci-fi piece that is just right for the early 80's *LOL*. I throughly enjoyed this series. I read it once in High School and now that I'm in Graduate school, I re-read it. Great trilogy. It's a classic tragic hero story that you can't put down.

I had this trilogy for a long time before i actually got down to reading it, I had hte feeling that it would betoo weird for my taste. Then when I actually read it my mind was blown a way, this book is awesome!

When a friend introduced me to this trilogy, I was skeptical. I had read very little sci-fi and what I had read I found boring, but I instantly fell in love with Merilon, and especially with Simkin, the loveable trickster. I will, I think, forever be in love with Simkin.

I highly recommend this series.

Disappointment.......2003-10-16

Dont get me wrong.. Im quite thankful for Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman for introducing me to the world of dragonlance.. since then Ive been reading a lot of sci fi books.. especially books written by them and other authors (jordan,goodkind,eddings pratchett,etc).

However I was bitterly disappointed with this book.. there seems to be something missing from it that makes it a great book to read.. after a few chapters i just kept reading through it bored and wishing the story gets interesting as i go further but sadly, it doesnt. The story itself didnt have that spark in terms of enticing the reader to know more, the mood itself was bland and the characters dull.

I was expecting more from the authors that started me to enjoy reading.

I recently reread this book and loved it. I didn't like it the first time. But I felt like I was missing something and gave it another shot. I'm glad I did.

It seems like I have to be in a particular mood to enjoy an Aylett book, and this one more than the others. It's drastically different from his other work: no jokes on every page, no over the top wackiness. This is a serious book and it reads like a modernized version of an epic poem. I would really like to read another book of this kind from Aylett. The prose is marvelous.

Verbal flotsam.......2003-08-05

For the past year, I had come across Steve Aylett's name several times; it had been crossreferenced with the names of authors about whom I'm particularly avid, such as Ballard and Ellis. This prompted me to pick up SHAMANSPACE. What a bitter disappointment. It is shameful that I invested money and time in this drivel---121 pages of nothing, in BIG PRINT so that your grandmother could read it.

Even at 121 pages, in LARGE PRINT, the book is too long.

I have no problem with linguistic expansion or inventive/neologistic writing, but this is mere verbal waste: one empty, meaningless sentence follows another, with no connection between them. The surrealistic experiments (SOLUBLE FISH, THE MAGNETIC FIELDS) had a formal consistency to them; this "book" has none. In other words, it doesn't follow the logic of the world, but neither does it even have an INTERNAL LOGIC.

The prose poetry is lifeless, graceless, and bad; Alett dispenses with the usual cliches and invents his own, which are infinitely more insipid.

SHAMANSPACE resembles the "work" of Mark Leyner without the humor or occasional cleverness (I do not say this to praise Leyner, who is nearly as execrable a writer). If any good could come from this trifle, it will be an enhanced feeling of self-confidence on the part of ordinary readers who will now be emboldened to publish their laundry lists.

Mind blowing?.......2003-06-20

If by "mind blowing" other reviewers meant that this book will make your brain want to spew chunks because it is so bad, then yes. It is mind blowing.

There is nothing unearthly, mystical, or genius about this little book. It is a collection of posturings and pseudo-poetic drivel.

There is no great imagery or prose in it. Just self-conscious phrases attempting to sound cool by being nearly completely obscure.

The book isn't worth the calories wasted by the act of picking it up.

If you like to have intense visualizations when you read books, this book is great. At times this book reads like one giant metaphor, but it is impressive and entertaining. The orginality and creativity factor used in the writing is really high. If you like Jeff Noon, Chuck Palahniuk, and the Matrix, definitely check this book out. You'l read it, tell soemone you just got your mind blown away, tell all of your friends about it, and then read it again. Get it.

Aylett tackles eternal issues.......2002-10-05

In this mind blowing novel, Alix, a metaphysical assassin tells us about his attempt to kill God. Alix, his allies, and his opponents are all capable of moving etherealy through time and space, and this makes for some interesting action. Aylett's prose is eloquent but stripped down, so it is occasionaly hard to see what he's saying, but worth the effort. Aylett draws on a number of scientific, philosophical and spiritual traditions to create this world, and the questions that this book ispires are deep ones. The book is short and the print is large so this is a quick read. If you like books that deal with the metaphysical in an unusual way, you owe it to yourself to check this out.

I read this book as a student at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. The book is a concise, general overview of Baptist doctrine. It is a good book for those investigating the differences between Baptists and other denominations. It doesn't get 5 stars because it is a little too simple to be outstanding, although that's what makes it easy to read.

A hard to find gem.......2001-12-18

The Stenciled Strawberry, by the Junior League of Albany, is a true gem of a cookbook. I have owned this cookbook for over 10 years and I consult it before planning dinner, a party or my Christmas baking. The recipes are not confined to just one specialty, but a collection of recipes handed down thru generations, from local restaurants and even some of locals that have gone on to become household names. Now, what truly makes this cookbook a find is that every recipe contains not only simple instructions but indications of how many people each recipe will serve, how much preparation is involved and whether the recipe can be made ahead of time to be served later. This cookbook should be considered a primer for the kitchen!

fun, beautiful work.......2001-04-21

Since I got in the habit of looking at manhole cover designs in San Diego, where I grew up, I was tickled to come across this title while looking for another book (Omeyagi). I loved it, very interesting and beautiful to look at. Almost inspired me to actually sew something, but I managed to overcome the feeling. I'm not a quilter, but I like to read about quilts and buy them. I recommend this book highly.

Quilting with Manhole Covers was a gift that I have thoroughly enjoyed. It takes your imagination beyond the traditional approach and shows quilting ideas in everything around you, even underfoot. MacGregor's book contains a beautiful display of manhole cover quilting. Artfully arranged, pleasing to the eye and other senses, this quilting is truly an artform unlike any other! Inspiring and yet undaunting, the author leads you to believe there is beauty in everything-- you, too, can see it and capture it; or, in the least, enjoy such art through her book.

What a wonderful, eye-opening book! A terrific slant on quilting. These are not just quilts but rather works of art. A beautifully illustrated collection of georgeous untraditional quilts that will amaze you. A great book for your quilt or art book collection!!!!

Bird Companion.......2006-04-15

This is an excellent supplemental book to the standard biographies of Bird (Ross Russell's BIRD LIVES! is typical). Included are chapters dealing with Parker's career and influences; a couple of transcribed interviews; some reminiscences by Jay McShann, Gene Ramey, Dizzy Gillespie, and Howard McGhee; a few concert and nightclub reviews; an essay by Stanley Crouch; and quite a number of reviews and appraisals of Bird's recorded legacy. The most impressive inclusions for me were the long essay by Ira Gitler excerpted from his JAZZ MASTERS OF THE FORTIES, and the "conversation" Gitler had with trumpeter Howard McGhee for the Jazz Oral History Project at the Institute of Jazz Studies. McGhee is very up-front with his comments and attempts to correct some long-held beliefs (for example, according to McGhee Parker did not set his hotel room on fire following the infamous LOVER MAN date for Dial). Also impressive is the adaptation from Phil Schaap's liner notes for the COMPLETE CHARLIE PARKER ON VERCE CD set; Schaap is probably the foremost authority on Parker in the world, and decades of scholarship and thinking about Bird went into that CD booklet. Anyone interested in the music and legend of Charlie Parker will appreciate this book.

This book is the most comprehensive review of Charlie Parker's life and his influence on sociey today. This is a must read for any jazz fan or performer.
