Book Description
Written with lyrical fire in a chorus of vividly rendered voices, Dionne Brand's second novel is an epic of the African diaspora across the globe. It begins in 1824 on Trinidad, where Marie-Ursule, queen of a secret slave society called the Sans Peur Regiment, plots a mass suicide. The end of the Sans Peur is also the beginning of a new world, for Marie-Ursule cannot kill her young daughter, Bola -- who escapes to live free and bear a dynasty of descendants who spill out across the Caribbean, North America, and Europe. Haunted by a legacy of passion and oppression, the children of Bola pass through two world wars and into the confusion, estrangement, and violence of the late twentieth century. "[Brand has] a lush and exuberant style that may put some readers in mind of Toni Morrison or Edwidge Danticat." -- William Ferguson, The New York Times Book Review; "A delicately structured, beautifully written novel infused with rare emotional clarity." -- Julie Wheelwright, The Independent (London); "Rich, elegiac, almost biblical in its rhythms . . . One of the essential works of our times." -- The Globe & Mail (Toronto)

A Poetic Account of Six Generations.......2000-05-26
A poetic account of six generations born from an act of rebellion and set free into the world, this novel begins on Trinidad as Marie Ursule plots a mass suicide of fellow slaves and ensures the escape of her "vanity and joy," little Bola. Marie Ursule's descendants, born of Bola and her lust for different men, dash off to disparate lives, which Brand describes in separate, always lyrical, chapters. Although Brand's repetitive use of certain phrases can wear thin, she shows a brilliant command of the emotional side of language. I would not recommend this book to casual readers because its emphasis on language and theme, and not plot, might disappoint them; however, this novel has much to offer serious and attentive readers.
Great, but kind of long........1999-12-07
I thought it was an amazing novel, very deep. I think Dionne Brand dwelled to much on simple situations in the plot, which at times made it boring, but overall extremely well written

Djuna Barnes must have had great fun writing and illustrating this book. It's a lively lampoon of her lesbian chums of Left Bank Paris in the 1920s. The main character, Dame Evangeline Musset, is based on the notorious dyke Natalie Barney. Structured as a month-by-month almanac in a style that owes as much to Shakespeare's comedies as to any literature of the intervening centuries, Barnes's book follows the Dame's amorous, often naughty, adventures.

Fine storytelling .......2005-12-20
Djuna Barnes (June 12, 1892 - June 18, 1982) played an important part in the development of 20th century English language modernist writing by women and was one of the key figures in 1920s and 30s bohemian Paris.
Her novel Nightwood became a cult work of modern fiction, helped by an introduction written by T.S. Eliot, and stands out for for its portrayal of lesbian themes and distinctive style.
Barnes spent the last 40 years of her life as a recluse in New York city. Since her death, interest in her work has grown and many of her books, like this one, are now back in print.
Her books are lively, irreverent, and just plain fun to read in modern times. I highly recommend that you introduce yourself to this original author!
An extraordinary book. Great fun reading and rereading it........1998-02-20
This is a funny book written in a poetry like style. The amusing illustrations are inspired on old wood engravings. But it's not only the story an the illustrations that are interesting. The book itself, the way it was published and distributed is also verry interesting and even romantic. In 1928 'spicy' books weren't allowed, not even in Paris France. So it was privately published in a small edition of which about 50 copies were hand coloured by the author. All books were sold by Djuna Barnes and some frends in secret along the Seine. With the help of Natalie Barneys copie the 1972 edition contains an explanation of the names used in the story and who they were in real life.

Book Description
Even in death, Skilgannon the Damned’s name lives on. Now, as an ancient evil threatens the Drenai heartlands, he returns.
A thousand years after they fell in battle, two heroes -- Druss and Skilgannon -- are revered throughout the war-torn lands of the Drenai where men and women live in abject fear of the Joinings, abominable meldings of man and beast, and of their mistress the dark sorceress known as the Eternal. None can stave off these ruthless foes. But what if the soul of a hero could be called back from the void, his bones housed again in flesh? An ancient prophecy foretold that Skilgannon would return in his people’s darkest hour. To most, this is a foolish hope, but not so to Landis Kan. For years Kan searched for the tomb of Skilgannon the Damned. And at last, he found it, gathered up the bones and performed the mystic ritual.
But the reborn hero is an enigma; a young man whose warrior skills are blunted and whose memories are fragmented. This Skilgannon is a man out of time, marooned in a world as strange to him as a dream, remote from all he knew and loved. Or nearly all. Before bringing Skilgannon back, Landis Kan had experimented with other bones in the hero’s tomb. That ritual resulted in a surly giant who possessed astounding strength, but no memories. To Kan, he is a dangerous failure. To Skilgannon, this giant represents their last hope.
As the ageless evil of the Eternal threatens to drown the Drenai lands in blood, two legendary heroes rise again.

With mythic sweep and epic scope, David Gemmell’s bestselling novels of magic and adventure feature brooding heroes who fight to preserve all that is good and honorable in themselves and in the worlds through which they stride like lonely giants. In times of terror and despair, theirs are the swords that carve a shining path, inspiring others to follow. Even in death, Skilgannon the Damned’s name lives on. Now, as an ancient evil threatens the Drenai heartlands, he returns.

Super Reader.......2007-08-26
A thousand years have passed, and a lot of the world is in a lot of trouble as crazed sorcery unleashes a new host of joining style beasts across the land.
A Nadir shaman tries to do something about this, after finding the bones of Skilgannon the Damned. The Damned will not be alone, as Khan has a couple more tricks up his sleeve. Alongside the bones of Skilgannon are the Swords of Night and Day, the axe Snaga, and a piece of hair.
Using other bodies, he is able to bring back the Silver Slayer, Druss the Legend, and Skilgannon's old lover, the Witch Queen.
Alliances shift and change as they look to put an end to the horror.
Disappointing conclusion to the Drenai saga.......2007-07-27
The Swords of Night and Day by David Gemmell is the tenth book in the Drenai Saga, and also the last. For people who have little to no idea who David Gemmell is, you are in for a treat as you embark on this incredible journey through his plethora of novels. The first book in this saga is simply titled Legend. It's a great read and one that starts a grand adventure. If you have not read Waylander and In the Realm of the Wolf by Gemmell you really need to at least read those two before reading this one. It will add much more depth to the main character and the demons he carries with him.
The premise of this novel is the return of long dead heroes to save Drenai one more time from the evil about to encompass it. Fans of Gemmell who have read Legend will certainly see the similarity here. Throughout the book, it seems as though Mr. Gemmell attempts to weave a tale of morality, doing the right thing, sticking with friends, and doing things even when they are hard to do. All these themes can be found in previous Drenai books. However, in this book, all those themes seem to be forced and disjointed. The first 400 pages of this 492 page book seem to drag on and on. While all the elements of good Gemmell books are present here, they don't seem to mesh together well. This is the only book in the Drenai saga that I did not enjoy.
A few characters present in other Drenai books appear in this one as well. Skilgannon and Druss in particular. However, the explanation of how those two are present is very far fetched and just seems `wrong' for lack of a better word. Of the main characters there is really very little character development to speak of. It almost felt that Mr. Gemmell tried to get by with what had been told before about them. I felt that the secondary characters were much more interesting than the main characters. Characters such as Stavut, Shakul, Askari, etc. were much more interesting this time around. The dialog, at times, was strained and seemed to make little sense. For some reason, the characters in this novel, just didn't hold the same magic as they did in previous novels.
I tired hard to like this book. I have enjoyed Mr. Gemmell's work the vast majority of the time. However, this book just seemed like a mashed together plot, some old characters, and recycled morals and themes. I felt I had read it all before from Mr. Gemmell and the previous times were simply better. If there was no author's name on the cover of the book I would never have guessed it was written by Mr. Gemmell.
Fans of the Drenai saga should probably read this book, as it is the last in the series. Yet, if you are thinking of getting this book or not getting this book, I would say you may want to look somewhere else. The `good' stuff in this book is severely outweighed by the rest of it. Don't get me wrong, the last 75 pages are pretty good, it just feels like a marathon to get to that point.
While I will certainly recommend the Drenai books to fantasy fans. I can't say I will speak very highly of this particular novel. I am somewhat disappointed that the Drenai saga ended on this note, but with the passing of Mr. Gemmell there most likely won' be any more books. It was a good ride though and one I a happy to have taken.
Best of the Best.......2007-07-15
I've enjoyed everything that I've read by Gemmell and consider him one of the top five writers of heroic fantasy / Sword & Sorcery ever. That list includes Robert E. Howard, Karl Edward Wagner, and Glen Cook. This book, The Swords of Night and Day, is quite simply the best of the best.
Kids reading list.......2007-03-26
My kids read all this writers stuff, ask for them for xmas.
A New and Great Twist to Gemmell's Writing..........2006-03-13
David Gemmell fast forwards way into the future in his new book The Sword of Night and Day. The writing is, like all Gemmell novels, fast paced and crisp. He leaves the reader with an undying thirst to read more and more of the book.
Skilgannon has been dead a long time, but with the help of magic, he has been brought back to life in a body that has been grown from his bones. His skills and mind have diminished with the time he has been away from the Drenai lands, but with time things slowly come back to him. He was brought back by Landis Khan in order to fight a new evil that reigned over most of the lands of the Drenai and those surrounding the former Drenai lands. With a familiar friend, Skilgannon will attempt to fight off this new evil.
I wish there were more Drenai books to read, but The Swords of Night and Day is the last at this point in time. The entire series was enthralling from the beginning to the end, and I cannot say enough good things about the excellent writing of Gemmell. If you are reading this and want to know where to start then go get his first entitled Legend. You will not be sorry you started reading his books. Each book of the series stands alone, unlike some of the other giants in fantasy right now. Enjoy each of his books while I move on to his Rigante series. Enjoy!

Rebellion Era Sourcebook.......2003-07-07
This book is good for someone who has just started the
exploration of the Star Wars Universe. If you read all
books and internet SW-pages you will find Rebellion Era
Sourcebook very boring and poor. Many details from Expanded
Universe were just ignored .Also the quality of photographs
is terryfying.Hard SW fans should avoid this book.Only
the cover is good in that product.
Gamemaster material mostly.......2002-09-26
This is a great buy if you plan on gamemastering Star Wars, great info, great ideas for plot and very nice visuals, but people who do not plan on gamemastering wont benefit as much, since the era notes and information on the star wars universe is so readily available from other sources, unless you live out of the U.S. and such information is scarce to begin with, but still i think it is a gamemaster tool.
Very good!.......2002-03-03
This book eplains so many things about the classic trilogy, even little details and other things that I couldn't even imagine existed inside star wars world. You can read lots of pages and there's only pure information instead of thousands of rules. I would like this title even if I wasn't a RPG player, just because of the amout of information this book brings to it's owner's hand. Long live to the Rebellion!
Best Supplement to Date.......2001-12-31
The Rebellion Era Sourcebook is the first hard cover supplement from Wizards of the Coast since their release of their version of the role playing game. It should not be confused with the West End Games Rebel Alliance Sourcebook as just being the regurgitation of the same information in a different book, it isn't. The Rebel Alliance book is a breakdown of the Rebellion, major players, vehicles, vessels, tactics and history, whereas the new book is a survey of the time period from A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, with Shadows of the Empire, Truce at Bakura, plus it includes data on Emperor's Hands- background for the Thrawn trilogy.
Each section is laid out under the time period it covers- A New Hope outlines how the Empire came into being and the New Order, the beginnings of the Rebellion by Mon Mothma, Bail Organa and Garm Bel-Iblis. It briefly covers the anti-alien sentiment held by the Empire, the Death Star (no stats, however, but if they are needed, it can be generated). It also has stats for all the major character, (and some minor ones like Tarkin and Lemelisk- the man who designed the Death Star). It does quite a good job in explaining events, concepts, and has loads of additional data, Game Master hints and ideas, plus flowing through the book along side the general data are mini adventures for players.
The Dark Time section covers events from the Battle of Yavin up to the Empire Strikes Back, detailing Imperial intelligence, propaganda, supply fleets, Alliance bases, bounty hunters, the Corporate Sector, Kessel, and the Prophets of the Dark Side. The Empire Strikes Back is mostly character data, with key events described, but also includes probe droids, AT-ATs, Imperial and Alliance forces of the time, Vader's fleet, but no stats for the Super Star Destroyer. More bounty hunters, Dagobah, and the Dark Trooper project from the first Dark Forces PC game- sadly, almost no mention of Kyle Katarn or Jan Ors.
Shadows of the Empire (a book I have yet to read) covers the period immediately after The Empire Strikes Back, the creation of Rogue Squadron, Bothans and their SpyNet, Coruscant, Prince Xizor and the Black Sun syndicate, however no mention is made of Dash Render or his Outrider. I suspect Wizards might be planning a separate, more detailed Shadows of the Empire book. Finally, the last section is of course Return of the Jedi and they wasted nearly five pages on Ewoks! When will people learn that no one likes the furry little buggers? It ends leading into final main character updates and the New Republic Era and the Ssi-Ruu.
A solid piece of work in full color. Lots of stills from the movies, and some top notch art as well, including a great picture of Xizor. Once again, however, the book fails to provide anything but mediocre low-detail and very small maps. A minor gripe, but one that I hope Wizard's addresses soon. Beyond that, this is great book. Granted, most people who have played the game under the West End rules and have read some of the novels, would know most of the information, but it's all here in one volume- very neatly laid out, clean, clear and to the point. I suspect that Wizards will produce sourcebooks for both the Rebel Alliance and the Empire, until then, there is this book, and a good book it is.
Odd set-up detracts from otherwise great book.......2001-10-23
Now, maybe you like having a sidebar at the bottom of almost every page that doesn't directly relate to that page. Some of the time I didn't mind it so much.
But when some of the sidebars go on for several pages, it's quite annoying. WotC may have been better off grouping these lengthy sidebars onto their own pages for easier reading. Such as the case with some of the adventure hooks that span four, five or more pages.
Other than that, this is a great sourcebook. You get coverage of all 3 movies, including charcters, ships, planets and a little beyond. The Ssi-ruk from Truce at Bakura and many of the characters from Shadows of the Empire.
Of course, not much new info is presented on the more well-known characters, but there's been so much written about them, it wasn't really expected. As usual, the place where books like this shine is the amount of info they provide on the backrgound players of the Star Wars galaxy.

A Different View of Revelations.......2003-06-09
Unlike my thoughts that Revelations was a book that had no value to today's Christian, this book and study changed my whole thought process around this book. It contains the most persuasive reading on the authenticity of Jesus Christ and our position in His kingdom. It is a must reading for Christians and all others who are looking for that glimpse into the eternal life.
An excellent study!.......2003-02-07
Anne Graham Lotz delivers an excellent study of select passages from Revelation. This will stand alone as a personal devotional, study guide, and will add new light to the companion workbook/group study series. Her insights give better understanding of these last days!
There is hope!.......2000-11-15
This was a wonderfully written book. The book explains end times in terms we can all understand. It gives all of us expectations of a greater life beyond this one and hope for our eternal life. For those who are mystified from reading Revelations, you will enjoy this read. It helps explain some of the symbolism and numbers our human minds find puzzling and beyond reach.
A glorious vision.......2000-10-01
Anne Graham Lotzs does a glorious job of bringing the relevancy of Revelations to light. This is a practical application of Revelations to every day life. Much writting has been done in an effort to explain the symbolism of this last book of the scriptures but little has been done to relieve the confusion and to grasp the true meaning of the revelation-hope. Anne Graham Lotz leads us through this exciting book with a glimps of the future as well as the present.

An amazing book, especially for beginning vegan cooks. Cheryl even includes lists of what is in her own pantry! Very informative and the pictures make your mouth water!
Excellent Choice for Vegan/Vegetarian Cooks.......1999-10-12
I have three of Cheryl's cookbooks, but this one gets the most use. Cheryl includes all the information needed to complete her recipies, she also includes variations which are really helpful. I would also highly reccomend her most recent book "More Choices for a Healthy Low-fat You." If you're looking it up by author, keep in mind her last name is now Peters. Great book, a must for all Vegetarians
Book Description
The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius that destroyed Pompeii in A.D. 79 also buried nearby Herculaneum. Over time the location of the small town was forgotten. Shortly after its rediscovery in the 1730s, excavations--more likely treasure hunts--were organized that unearthed ancient sculptures that had
survived the disaster. The richest finds were from a villa that came to be called the Villa dei Papiri, because it also yielded upward of a thousand papyrus rolls--the only library ever to have been recovered from the classical world. To the great excitement of contemporaries, the papyri held out
the tantalizing possibility of the rediscovery of lost masterpieces by classical writers.
Written for the general reader, this introduction to the ancient library describes the long and difficult history of attempts to unwind the damaged rolls. Sider discusses the texts that have been deciphered and puts them in the context of literacy and Roman society of the time. He describes the how
the ancient books were created from papyrus, and provides an account of attitudes toward books in Greece and Rome. He also surveys the private and civic libraries of the ancient world. This thoroughly researched and engaging book will be enjoyed by any reader with an interest in classical
studies.

good secondary source.......2002-12-14
I'm also a decorating junkie like the previous reviewer. However, I am not as enthousiastic about this book.
+s:
I think this is a solid book with nice photos and informative tips. I especially like the fact that this book has representations of many diferent styles. Not all books on bathrooms do.
-s:
The pictures while nice, did not go out and inspire me to redecorate my bathroom.
recommendation:
I think if you particularly like books on bathrooms, or if you are planning on redecorating your bathroom and want a secondary source for ideas, this book might be a good choice. Other people would probably want to skip this book.
Terrific resource.......2001-11-20
This series of books is a terrific resource for remodelers or decorating junkies like me. For not much more than the cost of a magazine, you get so much more! Without all the advertisements and unnecessary text. The pictures are lovely and the writing is great. They jumpstart your imagination, and even if you don't want exactly what's described, they serve as an excellent launching pad for your own ideas. I've spent a lot of money on magazines and overpriced coffee table books that don't provide as much as Ms. Cahill's "Simple Solutions" series. You won't be sorry with this purchase.
