Book Description
Catherine Sanderson seems to have it all: a fulfilling career helping immigrant women find jobs, a lovely home, and a beautiful, intelligent daughter on her way to Smith College. What Catherine doesn’t have: a father for her child– and she’s spent many years dodging her daughter’s questions about it. Now Phoebe is old enough to start poking around on her own. It doesn’t help matters that the mystery man, B.J. Johnson–the only man Catherine has ever loved–doesn’t even know about Phoebe. He’s been living in Africa.
Now B.J., a renowned newspaper correspondent, is back in town and needs Catherine’s help cracking a story about a female slavery ring operating right on the streets of Atlanta. Catherine is eager to help B.J., despite her heart’s uncertainty over meeting him again after so long, and confessing the truth to him–and their daughter.
Meanwhile, Catherine’s hands are more than full since she’s taken on a new client. Atlanta’s legendary Miss Mandeville–a housekeeper turned tycoon–is eager to have Catherine staff her housekeeping business. But why are the steely Miss Mandeville and her all-too-slick sidekick Sam so interested in Catherine’s connection to B.J.? What transpires is an explosive story that takes her world–not to mention the entire city of Atlanta–by storm.
From the New York Times bestselling author of What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day . . . comes another fast-paced and emotionally resonant novel, by turns warm and funny, serious and raw. Pearl Cleage’s ability to create a gripping story centered on strong, spirited black women and the important issues they face remains unrivaled.

Good Story.......2007-03-04
I have several of Pearl Cleage books, but have yet to read any of them until one of my book clubs pick this one for our read. I didn't finish it before our meeting, but I finished it afterward and it was a very good book. A little slow but good. I will have to read my other books by Ms. Cleage.
Sister Hood overcomes all.......2007-01-29
I enjoyed this fast paced, easy to read novel with characters I felt that I really knew. I was ready to drive around the city to find these locations mentioned since the book made them so real to me. I love a good plot and this one fooled me all the way!
Babylon Sisters: A Love Story Without All The Mush.......2007-01-26
Pearl Cleage does it again! She successfully puts into words those emotions that are all too common to most of us. Surprisingly, she is able to speak not only for the women characters, but for the men as well. Babylon Sisters is a love story without all of the mush. What I liked most about this book was the complexity of the characters - they have layers and the more you find out about each one, the more believable the character becomes. This book would make a great birthday gift to a friend. If you're a fast reader you can finish this in one weekend.
a good story, well-told.......2007-01-10
I loved this book, on many levels!
I'm a white woman in the Midwest, whose reading tends towards mysteries and gory thrillers, or travel- or food-related fiction and non-fiction. I was looking for something "different" and "light" to read over Christmas, so a book by a black woman about black characters in Atlanta, dealing with "women's issues" and immigration sounded interesting. (See the editorial reviews for story line.)
The mystery thread was engaging (even without anyone getting murdered!) as were the minor plot lines. I was afraid the "single-mother" and "romance" themes might be too sappy, but they weren't.
The glimpse of 'black culture' was interesting and "natural". I liked the characters; you'd be lucky to have them in your circle of friends. It was refreshing to see well-educated, affluent black characters.
There were references to books I've heard of but not read, so I'm now interested in seeking them out (e.g., the one that plays in role in the storyline).
The author's style was so enjoyable. Her turns of phrase were pleasing and the pacing of the chapters made it hard to put down. This was a good story, well-told. I plan to read more of her books.
Outstanding, Something out of the Ordinary .......2006-04-22
This is my first Pearl Cleage book and it won't be my last. The story doesn't have the typical urban fiction storyline its got a lot more to offer. The end is far from predictable. The chapters are short and the book is a quick and easy read. Cleage kept things moving from the beginning to the end. The book offers everything romance, drama, and a good discussion of immigration politics. If you want something out of the ordinary read this book.
The book is about Catherine Sanderson an advocate for immigrant woman and her daughter seventeen year old daughter Phoebe. The relationship between Phoebe and her mother grows rocky when she fails to reveal who her father is. But the main story line is about Catherine and her new job for Miss Mandeville. While working for Miss Mandevile Catherine learns about a female slave ring. Things quickly heat up as she uncovers more and more about immigrant women being sold and used as prostitutes.

Disappointment.......2006-07-24
My 13 y/o daughter has been anxiously awaiting this book. Now, she feels she would have preferred to have waited longer for a more thought-out conclusion to the trilogy.
She found the absence (she wasn't even mentioned)of one character disturbing. Typographical and grammatical errors were spread throughout the book. The retelling of events that occurred in earlier books wasn't always accurate. Finally, the conclusion left her saying "What?".
Overall, she felt it was a good book, but the above listed problems took away from the story.
Finally! The exciting conclusion to the DRAGONKIN series!.......2006-02-16
It seems like this book was delayed forever, or maybe it just feels like I've been waiting forever. I really like this series! I was filled with joy and sadness at the same time after I read this. Ronaldo, Bumble and Marian once again steal the show, but there's a serious side to them as well this time. But the dragons of Wyvernwood, especially the triplets, Chan, Luna and Harrow, take center stage as the forest comes under attack from humans and a new land must finally be found for all the dragons and their mythological friends.
Bailey's writing is very sharp and visual. You can almost see pictures in his words, and he writes with a real rhythm. Sometimes his words are a little big, though. But that's not a complaint. It's great fun to read and a great way to learn new words.
My one complaint is aimed at the publisher. The covers of the first two volumes were gorgeous. But the artist must have died or something, because this cover doesn't do the book or the series justice at all!
Buy it anyway. You won't regret it at all, and you'll meet some of the coolest characters in fantasy anywhere.

Green Lantern Kyle Rayner brings his predecessor, Hal Jordan, on a time-travel journey from the past to today to meet the JLA and battle Hals future-self, the cosmic villain called Parallax.
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Green Lantern: Emerald Knights is yet another of the bring Hal Jordan back so we can use him type of stories.
This time, he is again hanging out with Kyle Rayner, and ends up opposing his future self, among other things. Muchness of green stuff to be found here.
"Emerald Knights" = not bad at all.......2005-06-16
Considering that a) this is a "Return of Barry Allen" DC, if you catch my drift and b) instead of Flash, it's Green Lantern, "Emerald Knights" is a pretty darn good book.
"Emerald Knights" stars Hal Jordan, Silver Age Green Lantern, and Kyle Rayner, the current, somewhat-despised Green Lantern. Apparently, DC wanted to kill off this "despicible", "illegitimate" feature of Kyle Rayner, so what they did was pull off a "Return of Barry Allen"-style comic, in which Hal Jordan is somewhat pulled into the present. After some adventures which involve Kyle Rayner's grim nature, Hal Jordan's (very) confused state, and even Zero Hour Parallax, Hal Jordan legitimizes, so to speak, Kyle Rayner, so that organizations such as H.E.A.T. can shut their traps.
In other words, this book is all about the coming-of-age of Kyle Rayner.
But don't pass it off just as a ripoff of "Return of Barry Allen". "Emerald Knights" is QUITE good, and has a decent, understandable story as well. It doesn't measure up to some of the better Green Lantern titles, but what it DOES do is show off the various natures of both Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner. Don't pass this one off just because of the art, or the ripoffing nature. "Emerald Knights" is good - a farewell to Hal Jordan, and the summoning of Kyle Rayner. Read it.
The best story of the Kyle Rayner GL era (it's old school)........2004-06-27
As a longtime Hal Jordan fan who simply quit reading Green Lantern after the star of the title no longer appeared in it, I bought and enjoyed this book tremendously. It stands as something of an apology by DC for the callous manner they treated Hal Jordan, and though it does not fix that travesty, it does begin the process by getting Hal back in the spotlight. Soon, he became the Spectre for a while and in the very near future, he will reclaim his rightful place as Green Lantern in an all new series, I hear!
I don't dislike Kyle Rayner, though the character does need something of a hook to make him not just another "Peter Parker" young turk type. Here, the relatively blank slate that is Kyle adds to the story as he sees just what he needs to become if he wants to truly fill Hal's shoes.
And since Kyle will reportedly still be around when Hal returns, maybe we can see something of a father-surrogate son relationship as Hal teaches Kyle how to finally be a REAL hero?
Anyway, these recent (and soon-to-happen) developments make this book an interesting "preview" of things to come! Check it out!
A Great Read!.......2004-02-05
I'm not a big Hal Jordan Green Lantern fan, but I couldn't pass up the chance to read the pairing of the Kyle Rayner with a young and cocky Hal. The basic story is that Kyle is sent time traveling only to end up meeting Hal early on in his GL career. Kyle is able to return to his present time, but quickly discovers that Hal was accidentally sent back with him. What follows is a series of great moments as Hal adjusts to finding out the fate of Coast City, the realization of the power-hungry supervillain he eventually becomes, and the shock of having his old friends suspicious of his motives.
This storyarc accomplishes many things in my eyes, the greatest of which is making Hal Jordan an interesting character again. He was shown as a likable average guy coming to grips with a future he's powerless to change. A far cry from the hardened old gruff that he was for years before the "Emerald Twilight" storyline finally gave him some purpose. I highly recommend this wonderful tale to anybody, especially the casual GL reader who wants to see the best of the old and the new.
The GL Version of "Return of Barry Allen"!.......2003-12-04
The most wonderful (as well as most over-exploited) thing about DC Comics is the long history of the characters. For example, we have the Golden Age Green Lantern, Alan Scott (who first debuted in 1940) and the Silver Age Green Lantern, Hal Jordan (1959) and finally the current Green Lantern, Kyle Rayner (1994). That's not to mention the other GLs like the 1970s John Stewart and the obnoxious (but cuddly!!) Guy Gardner. Same thing with the Flashes (Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, Wally West).
The usual view of comic creators and readers are somewhat like this: The Golden Age gave us the original concept, the Silver Age gave us the penultimate version of the character and the Modern Age version is either a farce or a personification of the fan-boy's hero-worship for the Silver Age version. Case in point, Wally West, the current Flash - who is often portrayed as the substitute for the comic-fan who learn his "values" and "life-lessons" by emulating the oh-so-great Silver Age Flash, Barry Allen. We finally got to see Barry and Wally together in Mark Waid's now-classic "Return of Barry Allen" tale. In a way, Wally's Flash is "legitimized" by Barry's approval of him at the end of the tale.
Kyle Rayner, the current GL, however suffered the abuse of comic-readers who constantly call him a farce and pretender. Looking at the character objectively, I have to say that Kyle suffered because of the fate of his predecessor than through any fault of his own. You see, his predecessor, the beloved Hal Jordan went crazy and became this villain called Parallax (long story - in short, the readers were none too pleased!). Long-time readers took out their frustration on Hal's replacement, Kyle - even to the fanatical level of forming a Jihad-like group called H.E.A.T. to insist that D.C. Comics reinstate Hal as the "one and only REAL Green Lantern". This volume here is another "Return of Barry Allen"-like response by D.C. to "legitimize" Kyle Rayner. Did they succeed? Well, the results are pretty predictable. Hal shows up in Kyle's present-time. They go through several adventures together and meet up with a few "old" friends like the JLA, the current Green Arrow and the other "ring-bearers". Kyle feeling like the fifth wheel now that Hal is welcomed back (you'll never guess who comes to "comfort" him!). And finally an encounter with the Parallax from Zero Hour (don't ask!!). Ends with Hal saying how "happy and proud" he is of Kyle (there... the "legitimizing" moment) and Kyle "knowing" that Hal will always be that measure of a hero that he aspire to. Nothing overtly deep or anything here.
"Emerald Knights" is really a simple, fond farewell to the Hal Jordan that we knew and loved. It doesn't really change anything. Except Kyle maybe. The past few years, we have seen Kyle getting "recognition" from the JLA, the other Green Lanterns, etc. We finally get to see him meeting the "real" Hal Jordan and see how he measures up. I don't think this story did much to appease the H.E.A.T. (I just HAD to say that!). But for a reader like me, I'm pretty happy that they did a story like that. It shows how much these characters are loved and the affection that both the creators and readers still have for them. I am neither a H.E.A.T. supporter nor a Kyle supporter. I just like the way things have progressed so far. Kyle IS the Green Lantern. Alan Scott is Sentinel of JSA (recently started calling himself G.L. again!) and Hal is performing his "penance" as the Spectre (see "Day of Judgment" miniseries).

Book Description
The Intifada of 2000-2001 has demonstrated the end of an era of diplomacy in the Arab-Israeli conflict. The style of peacemaking of the Olso Accords has been called into question by the facts on the ground. Elite forms of peacemaking that do not embrace the basic needs of average people on all sides are bound to fail. The complete neglect of deeper cultural and religious systems in the peace process is now apparent, as is the role that this neglect has played in the failure of the process. Building on his earlier book, Between Eden and Armageddon, Gopin provides a detailed blueprint of how the religious traditions in question can become a principal asset in the search for peace and justice. He demonstrates how religious people can be the critical missing link in peacemaking, and how the incorporation of their values and symbols can unleash a new dynamic that directly addresses basic issues of ethics, justice, and peace. Gopin's analysis of the theoretical, theological, and political planes shows us what has been achieved thus far, as well as what must be done next in order to ensure effective final settlement negotiations and secure, sovereign, democratic countries for both peoples.
Customer Reviews:
Honest and Challenging, so Worth Reading.......2006-07-03
For those who still hold out some hope for the power of religion to help build lasting peace, Marc Gopin's book is one of the best works available as a guide to just how important and just how difficult the work is. One could indeed wish that this book were a little more tightly organized, but the true, underlying factor is the degree of difficulty that Gopin has attempted in terms of personal and theological honesty. This is a painful book to read at many points, and it takes religious people right to the brink of despair in terms of ever finding enough truly common ground to move even the most religious to deeper relationships of peace and justice. Those looking for easy, pat answers will be profoundly disappointed by the book. Those looking for easy rationales for taking sides in religious, political and military conflict will be annoyed. But those looking for seasoned and searching guidance in some of the hardest and most urgent issues facing religious people today will find much wisdom and much reason for renewed reflection. Despite hard experiences that have clearly challenged the core of his faith identity, Gopin still believes that religions have the power to bring about a better world for everyone, even where conflict seems the most intractable. We need to hope he is right, for all our sakes. Not an easy book on any level, but a worthwhile one. I expect another volume that develops many of the individual themes more fully.
Bad Ideas, Bad Execution.......2002-11-05
This is not a good book. Its thesis is poorly formed, and the execution is terrible. The author's views are not well explained, and the discussion shows naivete, arrogance, and a deep ignorance about war, peace, and the middle east. This book only muddles the complex issues involved. This reader was quite surprised that a relatively respected press agreed to publish such nonsense.
A New & Bold, Yet Sacred Path for Abraham's Children.......2002-06-29
Marc Gopin's Holy War, Holy Peace is a wise book that offers new hope for peacemakers, both at the political level, and for the general population. Gopin's theory is that religion can, and should, be used to create bridges, not walls, between Abraham's children, Jews, Christians and Muslims. He passionately, boldly and perceptively analyzes the importance of religion and culture on the peace process. One of his powerful new ideas is "remythification." "We relate to each other mythically," he states. Our myths are born of culture, religion, politics, history, and current events. In order to create bridges, we must be prepared to challenge some myths and honour others. His detailed "Practical Applications" is bold and sensitive, and above all, wise, making it a great and useful book for all who seek peace.
Read the stunningly beautiful dedication (to his daughter.) It speaks volumes about the man who is Marc Gopin.

B&B recipes..........2007-01-06
This cookbook is awesome! I have had it for about 8 years now and have tried quite a few of the recipes and have yet to find one I haven't loved. The recipes are easy to follow and contain ingredients that are usually in my kitchen already or are easy to find at the grocery store. Although everything I've sampled is super-good, my favorites are "Yogurt Coconut Coffee Cake" and "French Breakfast Puffs". Several of the recipes call for 'melted butter or margarine', but I found I can substitute healthier canola oil and the recipes come out great! I highly recommended this cookbook!
the apple cider syrup alone makes this worthwhile!.......2006-07-19
So far all the recipes I have tried have been a huge success. The organization is simple, as are most of the recipes, so it is fairly easy to turn out a tasy breakfast with little effort. Like another reader, I am looking forward to checking out the author's other B&B cookbook for more great recipes! Make sure to check out the apple cider syrup in this one, it smells fabulous and tastes even better!
Great recipes!.......1999-05-18
If you have looked for great muffin, coffee cake, cobbler recipes, this book has them. I'm pretty picky about recipes but I have found some great ones in here. I made the blueberry coffee cake and it was so easy and delicious. The banana bread was great and I can't wait to try others. I'm going to check out her other one!
Another yummy collection from food whiz, Carol Frieberg........1999-02-05
Carol Frieberg continues to find the most delicious, and easy to prepare, breakfasts in town. There are so many good recipes, this book makes it easy to celebrate the morning! I cannot wait until Carol's next B&B adventure.

Wonderfully delicious.......2005-09-22
The Arbor House Casserole was the best breakfest I have ever made. I made it in a muffin pan so that I could serve it individually rather then in slices. My guests loved the taste. Will try other recipes and let you know.
Test and Taste of Time!.......2002-03-18
I am not a lover of "recommendation books," and usually prefer to experiment and find my own "jewels" and "coal."
But, in this case, I am happy to report, I was wrong. This book has given me many a wonderful taste of "B&B cuisine" and a delightful weekend or two.
Buy this book and enjoy its many delights!

If You Love Breakfast.......2007-06-11
This was bought as a gift for a lady who runs a B&B in the Sierra foothills of California where we were recent guests. She makes lovely breakfasts and I knew she would love the book. As it turned out she was very excited to receive it and felt there were many recipes she could use.
I am thinking of purchasing one for myself as well.

Wish for pictures.......2003-04-23
The recipes seems yummy but this book contains no pictures at all. When i buy a cookbook, i like to see the results so i know i made it right.Disappointed that there was no pictures. Decided to return the book.
One of my favorites.......2001-08-19
I use recipes from this book over and over again. This ranks right up there with "The Joy of Cooking" in terms of practicality and ease and taste. I've never had one recipe fail, they are all delicious and easy to make. If I go on an out of town trip, I make something from this book to take along for breakfast, for example the oatmeal raisin scones are delicious and easy to take along in a tupperware container tucked in a suitcase. Or if I go camping with friends I'll make some muffins. One time when some friends had a moving party and we met early in the morning, I made "Eggs for a Crowd" and it was a big hit! Great idea for a cookbook, as who knows more about breakfast foods than B&B's?! Plus, they need to have recipes that are original yet easy to make. I highly recommend this book!
Scrumptious! A delicious collection of breakfast ideas........1999-02-05
I love this book! Not only is it full of some wonderful breakfast ideas, but the book is lovely to look at as well. The next best thing to staying at a B&B is having a meal prepared for you from this cookbook.

Delicious recipes from California Inns and B&Bs.......2004-08-13
I just received this cookbook as a gift and I love it! We made the artichoke frittata and potato cake with bacon and blue cheese for a brunch and our friends were raving. We made the butterscotch banana bread the other night and it was to die for. Highly recommended!

At Long Last, Romance.......1999-12-29
Schiffer Publications, Ltd., provides helpful guides to collectors of dozens of items. The older "Historical Staffordshire" is a wonderful reference for lovers of all English Staffordshire pottery, though it does not specifically address its kin "Romantic Staffordshire." For those of us who especially collect Romantic Staffordshire, the publication of this new Schiffer guide in November was a long-anticipated occasion. 100's of glossy beautifully-photographed pieces and their markings, with detailed histories of manufacture, descriptions and origins of motifs, histories of significant Staffordshire potteries, and even estimates of value create an astonishing identification tool for all collectors, serious or casual. Thank you, Schiffer!
At last, a long-awaited reference!.......1999-12-29
Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., references are always excellent visual and educational resources for collectors, but until November their guide to antique "Historical Staffordshire" pottery styles was the only title available in its category. References focused on antique "Romantic Staffordshire" are scarce, so it was with delight I learned of this guide's recent publication. 100's of beautiful glossy photographs help collectors identify pieces in their collections. EXCELLENT photographs, detailed descriptions, explanations of creation and manufacture, origin of motifs, as well as history of important English potteries and approximate values make this guide a vital tool for any Staffordshire collector, casual or otherwise. Thank you, Schiffer!

Deals with many aspects of beadwork.......2000-12-06
I bought this book because i was attracted by the colorful beads, and also because i liked the idea that i was ready to start beding since i had all of the equipment that was necessary to begin with. In fact the items that come algong with the book, needles, thread, beads, pins, etc are very usefull to people like me who dont know how to make a knot to start bedding and dont have the basic stuff at home. However, there weren't too many instructions for the projects that could be carried out with that stuff. I was expecting a larger amount of things to do and more creative as well. Instead, there is an extensive Introduction where the culture and customs of the African people are described and the importance of the beads is emphasized. It was not what I was looking for since it wasn't concentrated on instructions but instead on historical facts.
Excellent book for those who loves handcrafts.......2000-06-18
People who love doing unique and exotic handicrafts will find this book terrific. The art of beading is described from the simplest to the most sophisticated ones. Beginners are given a step-by-step guidance: from the basic to the most complicated techniques in creating spectacular work of art; while learning about the beauty of this African art. This book will be a marvelous gift for people who like to keep themselves busy at home.
Book Description
With careful planning, anyone can combine the charm of the old with the best of the new! In this comprehensive guide, internationally renowned designer and best-selling author Mary Gilliatt reveals how to successfully renovate a tired, older home into a dazzling interior and exterior showplace. The book begins with an overview of older homes, defining period styles to the 1930s. Mary Gilliatt points out the details to look out for, as well as which ones to avoid. She also shows how to research what the original builders intended, so details can be replicated. Next, Gilliatt discusses the two schools of thought in renovation: the reverential view, which tries to entirely restore and preserve the past of a house; or the sensitive view, which keeps the integrity of the individual while introducing new techniques, new materials, and new spaces. Finally, dozens of case histories of dazzling, real-life renovations offer a breathtaking treasury of inspiration and ideas.

Don't Buy Sight Unseen.......2004-09-21
I live in a house that needs to be remodeled. Given the title of this book, I thought it would contain helpful information. Big mistake! The book consists primarily of non-U.S. structures and has no information on the ubiquitous ranch houses that make up a large percentage of the U.S. housing stock. There are no before and after photos, no general principles to follow regarding remodeling, in fact, no information I found useful at all except a good two page dictionary of terms (many of which are English) in the back.
If I'd seen this book in the library and taken a few minutes to peruse it, I'd have replaced it on the shelf.
