Book Description
It is June 1971. Dominick Pindle, a tenderhearted but aimless Massachusetts teenager, spends his nights driving around with his mother and dragging his wayward father out of bars. Late one evening, Dominick's search puts him face-to-face withhis father's seductive mistress, Edie Kramer. Instantly in lust, he begins a forbidden relationship with this beautiful, mysterious woman. Before long, though, their erotic entanglement leads to a shocking death, and Dominick discovers that the mother he betrayed hid secrets as dark and destructive as his own.
Charged with the exhilarating narrative pace of a thriller and set during a complicated and explosive era,
Boy Still Missing is the critically acclaimed debut novel from
John Searles. It renders a deeply affecting portrait of a boy whose passage into adulthood proves as complex and impassioned as the history that unfolds before his eyes.

What's a Boy to Do?.......2007-09-23
I've never heard of this book until a friend recommended this book to me while we were helping a friend move. The friend that was moving had set aside a box of books that she was going to donate. Of course, being the bookworms that we are, we couldn't resist the urge to rummage through. Thus, I was directed to this book.
I cannot believe that I had never heard of this book before. Most of the reviews give this book a high praise. While it isn't the best book that I've read, it's is one of the best books that I've read recently.
Like the Library Journal says, it's all about alcoholism, adultery, abortion, adoption and abduction. Dominick is a 15-year-old young man in Holedo, Massachusetts. He accompanies his mother at the end of the day, looking for his drunk father in bars. If his father is not found in any bars, there's only one other place he can be...at his mistress', Edie.
The thing is Dominick and Edie begin a secret and "innocent affair". Dominick feels responsible for her, especially after they discover that she's pregnant by his father. However, unknown to everyone, Dominick's mother is also pregnant.
The book moves somewhat slow but soon picks up the pace after Dominick's mother is found dead in a motel when she tried to do a homemade abortion. At the same time, Edie disappears. Dominick feels extremely guilty because he stole money from his mother to help out Edie. Edie promised to pay him back. Dominick is angry and decides revenge. But first, he must find her.
"Boy Still Missing" is a good read, filled with suspense and twists.
Novel Still Missing.......2007-08-01
I ordered this book b/c I saw that it had received almost 5 stars. I was quite unimpressed. A 15 year old boy has sex in the room where his mother died with a kidnapped one month old lying quietly nearby. A little ridiculous as is the rest of the book.
Polarized opinions.......2007-07-29
The story is fiction and it seems implausible but it still rang true to me.
I say 'read it'.
Decent book.......2006-07-17
I was shocked by all of the 5 star ratings for this book.
It is not a book that I will regret reading but it is not a book that i would highly recommend.
I was a little let down with the climax that came crashing down into nothing.
GREAT BOOK.......2006-01-15
I'm not going to go over what the book is about as many have already done that. I just want to say that I am NOT friends with the author. Everyone who has given this book a bad review has said that if we give it a good review we must be friends with the author. THIS IS NOT TRUE. i am an avid reader and I found this book to be wonderful. I could not put it down. And this was his first book. I am now reading his second book and find it to be just as good. (Strange But True) I would recommend this book to anyone. Do yourself a favor and get the book from the library or buy it and find out for yourself. Do not go by the negative reviews you are reading here. It is a wonderful book.

Another great Xanth book.......2002-09-27
I love the Xanth series, and this was no exception. I don't recommend this book for anyone who hates puns, though, as it is chock full of them, just like the others. As usual, Mr. Anthony provides characters who are fantastic, yet we Mundanes can indentify with. Who hasn't felt that they don't belong? Or wondered how they will find a sould mate? We have all had a crush we know can't work out. But most of us have not had to deal with these things while on an adventure through a magical land while solving riddles and running from dragons. If you liked other Xanth novels, you'll like this one. And, best of all, this series can be read out of order. I don't recommend it, but it can be done. Pick up any Xanth book, and you will enjoy it.
Piers has another winner on his hands!.......2002-05-05
Harpy Thyme is beautiful beyond the amazing illustrations on the cover. Piers Anthony takes the story of a Xanth maiden who is alternately accepted and rejected by both species of her family. When she goes in search of a suitable mate, the young goblin-harpy gets more than she bargained for from Good Magician Humphrey. If you love Xanth and/or a good yarn, check this book out!
WOW!!!!.......2001-06-28
This book was recommended to me by a friend, and so I decided to check it out. I wasn't expecting it to be a spectacular read. boy, was I wrong! This is one of my favorite books of all time and I'm really eager to read all the other Xanth books. There a so many bad puns including a sar-chasm, Com Pewter, and a great deal of having secs (as in the abbreviation to seconds)! Harpy Thyme is a cute, funny, romantic book, and it's hilarious and fun to read! I'd recommend it to anyone!
I love Gola and her travels........2001-05-27
This book was filled with puns, romance, comedy and adventure, nnot to mention the feelings of ambitious Golha, a Goblin-Harpy crossbreed. All Xanthian readers will ove this book, with old-timer Trent, and some new characters as well!
Its a timeless Clasic.......2000-11-13

Jannisaries Pournelle.......2007-09-23
I rate Pournelle either good or great. This one is only good but it is a necessary part of the series, and the series as a whole leaves you wanting to now more about Galloway and Company. Reason that this is good but not great is that there are a few too many cardboard characters.
The series seems to be a lead in to another series about a galactic empire and that is going to be a tough job.
The story continues.......2005-02-16
Rick Galloway and his band of mercenaries have been stranded on a secret planet by space aliens who want them to produce a crop of intoxicating drugs. In order to achieve this goal, however, Galloway and his men must bring order to the chaotic mix of human cultures they find surrounding them. By carefully building alliances, Galloway begins to transform the planet's social, political and military landscape. However, his efforts are hampered by the changing climate and the resulting mass migrations. Galloway struggles to improve the lives of the people he rules, always mindful that any progress he promotes increases the chances that the aliens will bomb the planet back to the stone age.
While not as well written as the first book, this follow up does flesh out the varied cultures on the planet Tran, and shows the continuing impact of the introduction of advanced technical knowledge in a low technology culture. The military and political implications prove to be challenging, but perhaps not as bad as the social impact. While the first book could have stood on its own, this one ends abruptly, without any resolution, and is clearly intended to be read as part of a series.
a very short book, but damn good.......1999-05-19
ISBN 0-441-38294-0 Ace Books first printing Nov 1982. A large format book, unusual in the 1980's with illustrations, and large print. Why they didn't just combine this book with Storms of Victory (Janissares 3) I have no idea, because it was 1/2 of the original book. Easy logical progression of the original. Rick Galloway and his men have their hands full -changing weather patterns, growing madweed, spreading technology, revolting nobles, reuniting Rome and preparing to survive the nuclear winter if he succeeds.

Christianity has no "caste system".......2007-03-12
There is no defense for feminism here. There is no defense for patriarchy either. Neither Jesus nor Paul, nor any other 1st Century Believer, minimized, dismissed... OR glorified... the place of women in ministry or the Body of Christ. It took an additional four hundred years for women to be relegated to "the back of the bus" and was the result of intentional malice of forethought.
The First Century Body of Christ did not function as "the MEN of God" exclusively, as we have been led to believe, while the women were only good for preparing meals, raising children, and creating more men. Women were fully functioning members of the Body of Christ as described throughout the New Testament... on every level, in every capacity. A CAREFUL reading of the ORIGINAL text documents this as fact. Neither men NOR women held positions above one or the other... "ALL are subject one to ANOTHER in Christ." Only GOD holds authority above any other. "... to be great in God's Kingdom..."
Gene Edwards further informs this position by laying out the HISTORICAL record of the subjugation of women in the Body of Christ in general, and in areas of ministry in particular, exposing the roots of the modern "biblical" teaching that women are "to be silent" in the church and are forbidden "to teach anyone other than children and other women." Original New Testament scriptural texts do not bear these teachings or beliefs out, if they are researched with an honest and true spirit. There is no case for "feminism" here, either!!!
To do nothing more than read the QUOTES of the "church fathers" beyond the first century, could cause one to ask, "why are women permitted to defile the Christian faith... at all? In ANY capacity whatsoever?" It was truly appalling to the point of physical nausea to learn the opinions of men (toward women) who have been held up as the pillars of the Christian Church... and explains an awful lot about why the latter day church has been so impotent compared to the First Century church as recorded in Acts.
This book holds the hope of not only setting Women Free... perhaps more importantly, it holds the hope of setting MEN and the Body of Christ free to be all we are called and created to be in Him.
At the very least, anyone who teaches or believes that women have no place in ministry and/or are, in any manner whatsoever, somehow "less than" their brothers in Christ, who also profess to seek and embrace Truth, would do well to HONESTLY examine and research and entertain the possibility that they do not have ALL the facts on the issue. Do as Gene Edwards has done... look beyond the doctrine of men and teachings passed down, unquestioned, for seventeen hundred years. Be prepared to SEE what has been right there in the scriptures you've read and studied all along, but edited out, without realizing it... the facts that have been right there in plain sight. Honestly research who Lydia, Priscilla, Junias, and many other women throughout the New Testament were and what they did and how they were viewed in the church in their time... and then reconcile it with the FEW MIStranslated scriptures that CONTRADICT many other verses, teachings, and examples of scripture. It was these contradictions that drove me back into research and led me to Gene Edwards' book... which explained why I kept running into the same arguments and contradictions.
Serious "Truth Seekers" will at least be open to examining these points and this research for themselves. Most will likely dismiss it as more feminist progaganda... and continue to do a disservice to half the Body of Christ... and therefore, to the Body as a whole. And that would be truly a shame and loss to all...
Seventeen Hundred Years Is Long Enough!.......2007-02-20
This book threatens the lifeblood of the institutional church... that being man-power! Edwards dispels the lies surrounding women and their involvement in the Kingdom of God.
This book begins with quotes from many renown men throughout the last 1700 years of church and secular history. The quotes are taken from men that are highly esteemed in Christianity. For example, Jerome (translated the Latin Vulgate) said, "Woman is a temple built over a sewer." John Calvin said, "All women are born that they may acknowledge themselves as inferior to the male." Martin Luther, "There is no gown or garment that worse becomes a woman than when she would be wise." And how bout this one from King James (authorized the first English Bible)... "To make women learned and to make a fox tame work out to the same end. Educating woman or a fox simply makes them more cunning."
Now, these men primarily represent a major shift in church history, biblical thought, and translation. It ought to be a little discomforting to know that these men felt this way about women. And they have much to do with the modern day church teachings and practice concerning women. Not only about women... but also in our understandings of the ministerial roles of apostle, pastor, deacon, etc.
Edwards traces the long history of chauvinism within the church. He goes to the heart of the original text and reveals how the Bible was translated in a way that would support the second-class citizenship of women. He harmonizes passages like 1 Cor. 11, 14; Eph. 5; 1 Tim. 2 with the rest of Scripture. He shows how Jesus' treatment of women in the Gospels along with the rest of the New Testament proves there to be mistranslations within the "anti-woman" passages.
Get this book! Edwards (an ex-Southern Baptist) deals with the tough questions in the text and convincingly argues that men have been suppressing women since the Fall. Learn how his cry to the church is not a part of the "so-called feminist movement." It is about returning to the heart of Galatians 3:28.
I also want to recommend:

AN EXCELLENT READ.......2007-01-12
This is an excellent book on so many fronts. Firstly, it clarifies an issue that has always felt so alien; the subduing of a sister in Christ. Secondly, Christ's radical view of women becomes all the more revolutionary when placed in the context of the first century. Paul carries this message in his letters in a completely consistent manner, bringing true reform to the fledgling church. Thirdly, we are confronted with facts that demonstrate that translations are not perfect and can often be intentionally biased. What a blessing it is when confusion over Bible verses that appear contradictory suddenly fall into line and paint a beautiful picture. Next, the genesis of a home church is transformed from theoretical to practical. So many questions exist about how a fellowship is to interact; a tangible formula is included to create a vibrant, living organism. Finally, Gene's book amplifies the beauty of women. When I view Christ's love demonstrated towards women, I cannot help but love my sisters in Christ all the more. This book could even be looked upon as a marriage builder, strengthening the love and respect a husband and wife have for each other; my wife is even more beautiful after seeing her through the eyes of Christ.
I have given away several copies. Granted, some will be burned, but others will bring forth freedom, for it was for freedom that Christ has set us free.

Good book but a bit dated.......2003-09-19
This book is a good book. She goes over basic inkle weaving and moves on to pick-ups. She includes charts for basic pick-up patterns. When used in combination with Lavinia Bradley's book or Helene Bress, it is a very good resource.
Cons: It doesn't use the modern inkle looms that are in use now. But she does show how to make the simple type of inkle loom she uses in the book. Also, her charting method is different than that used in Helene Bress's book (and other more modern ones). It just takes a bit of getting used to.
Overall, it's a good book if you're interested in pick-ups but I feel that it's best when used with another book.

Beautiful stuff!.......2001-07-05
The photographs are really captivating! They are all from Brit pop magazines like The Face and BIG... It's really worth to get this book and make it part of your artistic senses collection. Some of the photographs aren't really special and are TOO obviously alterted by computer (which even I can do it) but a lot of them are fresh ideas. The 6 ladies including the one on the cover are already stunning for a start so, well!

"The essays probe the growing vocabulary of Holocaust imagery and address the various ways (in varied venues) that the Holocaust has been remembered, represented, and received."American Jewish History
"This challenging collection of essays which also contains some stunning art work, should find a place in every library that deals with the memory of the Holocaust and its effects that transcend the generation."
Conservative Judaism
"(Makes) a cogent case for a deeper, unmastered engagement with Holocause trauma."Journal of Jewish Studies
Impossible Images brings together a distinguished group of contributors, including artists, photographers, cultural critics, and historians, to analyze the ways in which the Holocaust has been represented in and through paintings, architecture, photographs, museums, and monuments.
Exploring frequently neglected aspects of contemporary art after the Holocaust, the volume demonstrates how visual culture informs Jewish memory, and makes clear that art matters in contemporary Jewish studies. Accepting that knowledge is culturally constructed, Impossible Images makes explicit the ways in which context matters. It shows how the places where an artist works shape what is produced, in what ways the space in which a work of art is exhibited and how it is named influences what is seen or not seen, and how calling attention to certain details in a visual work, such as a gesture, a color, or an icon, can change the meaning assigned to the work as a whole.
Written accessibly for a general readership and those interested in art and art history, the volume also includes 20 color plates from leading artists Alice Lok Cahana, Judy Chicago, Debbie Teicholz, and Mindy Weisel.

Customer Reviews:
Very, very good celebrity autobiography.......2004-09-12
If you like reading celebrity autobiographies, and you even have a passing interest in this actress, don't miss this book. It really is a very engrossing read. She speaks of her life in a very honest and forthcoming fashion, and she has had quite an interesting life, the most dramatic part being the blacklisting of her actor husband, Larry Parks, in the 1950's, and her "guilt by association."
Also, if you happen to be a fan of either Lloyd, Beau, and/or Jeff Bridges, you should know that Betty and Larry are/were(Larry is deceased) very close to this family -- Betty is Jeff Bridges' godmother.
So, if you know Betty from her movie work (she tells such a funny story about Frank Sinatra, from when they were filming "On the Town"), her stage work, or her TV work on "All in the Family" and "Laverne and Shirley," I think you will more than appreciate this book.
I hope you read this and enjoy it as much as I did!
betty's the best!.......2004-01-21
betty garrett was the best in those mgm movies and she could have been so much more famous
Lovely book from a lovely lady!.......2001-08-26
Betty's wit, wisdom and reflections prove that there's a lot more to her than a pretty face and wise-cracks. Talent, sensitivity and grace make her a beautiful author with something important to say. Show business enthusiasts and historians alike will greatly enjoy her story. And, since her career is enjoying a recent resurgence, we can only hope she'll write a sequel, soon!
Beautifully written........2001-08-17
I have loved the movies of both Betty Garrett and Larry Parks for years, and now feel that I have read their love story. Betty's descriptions of her multi-faceted career and personal life were written with humor, warmth, and love. She and Larry endured the 'unofficial' blacklist and other obstacles together, and showed what "in good times and in bad" really meant. I admire and adore them both even more now. Her book is a wonderful read and her career isn't even over.
Great Book!.......2001-02-07
I like Betty Garrett very much! From Laverne & Shirley, All In The Family-very funny! I like that the book is her autobiography! I can't wait to read all about the life & times of the lovely Betty Garrett! I also have David L. Lander's autobiography & the unofficial Penny Marshall book! Any one who's a fan of "Laverne & Shirley" e-mail me @: tiff_lisatony7@yahoo.com. We can chat about Betty, Penny, David, Cindy, Michael, Phil, & evrything else related to "Laverne & Shirley".
