Customer Reviews:
One of Talbot Mundy's best.......2006-03-25
The Plot: Commodus, son of Marcus Aurelius and Emperor of Rome, has gone insane. His powerful inner cirle of supporters gather to plot his death. While each person has reasons for killing Commodus, who will be the person who finally assumes responsibility and kills this "Roman Hercules"?
The rest of the story: As in most of Mundy's books, he does not portray people as good or evil. He presents their motivation and lets you judge. There is no hero to this book. In fact the Hutchinson edition's cover had a subtitle stating "An episode withtout a hero". The closest character to being "a hero" comes across as being an idealistic simpleton.
Commodus does not strike you as being evil (insane maybe but not evil). Commodus enjoys the fame of being Roman Emperor but doesn't like the everyday grind of being emperor. He prefers to fight in gladitorial events against both men and beasts. Being as the Emperor can't actually fight in the arena, He finds a "look-a-like". The "look-a-like" sits in the emperor's chair at the arena while the real Commodus fights in the games. All Rome knows he's a "look-a-like" but who's going to point this out? Not anyone who has hopes of living a long life. One day the "look-a-like" is killed and Commodus can no longer go participate in the fighting. Unstable in the first place, he now goes the rest of the way into madness. He says that Rome has become decadent and now will get the Emperor it deserves.
The rest of the slim novel (156 pages in the paperback edition) revolves around the plot to kill the emperor. And this is the part of the novel that I find most intriguing. There are seven or eight plotters. Each professes unselfish reasons for believing that Commodus must die. Yet when asked to perform the actual killing, each plotter states reasons why he can not be the killer. Who eventually steps forward and kills Commodus? Read this book. It's a great one!
Last comment: As is true with most of Mundy's historical novels, the events told in the novel are basically true. All but one or two of the main characters were real people that actually participated in the history just as Mundy portrays them. In the case of Caesar dies, this is especially true. While it will give away the identity of the killer, you can go to the url http://www.roman-emperors.org/commod.htm and read for yourself how accurate Mundy wrote this historical novel.
Should you be interested in Talbot Mundy (and I hope you are) please read my other reviews of some of Mundy's books. Please help keep a great author's books alive. Oh, and please don't curse at me too much when you find yourself trying to track down used books of his other titles as many are no longer in print.

This whole business is getting too confused for me, he grumbled, sitting down again. "You want to kill Commodus, as is reasonable. Marcia has ordered me to kill you, which is unreasonable! Yet for the present she protects you. Why? She knows you are Commodus' enemy. She seems anxious to save Commodus. Yet she encourages Pertinax, who doesn't want to be emperor; he only dallies with the thought because Marcia helps Cornificia to persuade him! Isn't that a confusion for you? And now there's Bultius Livius. As I understand it, Marcia caught him spying on her. No woman in her senses would trust Livius; the man has snowbroth in his veins and slow fire in his head. Yet Marcia now heaps favors on him!"

Exceptional take of the assassination of Commodus.......2007-07-22
"Caesar Dies" by Talbot Mundy is not for everyone and one needs a knowledgeable understanding of Roman history, specifically of Commodus and of the conspirators. Once you know at least who Commodus, Marcia, Galen, Narcissus, and Pertinax were, you can enjoy and understand what exactly is going on. This story for the most part, was very informative and entertaining. It is heavy with dialogue and Roman politics and is amazingly accurate with historical details, a rarity with any fictional novel. For example, Narcissus did strangle Commodus as the book shows, and it only occurred when Marcia found out that she was on the proscription list, which also was shown in the book. Many other aspects were historically correct. In fact, one can infer, as I have, that this personal interpretation of the events leading to and the assasination of Commodus itself can be seen as having taken place for real, though there are fictional elements involved.
This story's main character is Sextus, not to be confused with Sextus Cornelius Repentius, who married Didius Julianus' (next emperor following Pertinax) daughter. Sextus is a fictional character who finds out that a letter he has written to his father about his criticisms of Commodus had been intercepted and that his father was soon thereafter killed because of the letter and that Sextus was now an outlaw. Sextus takes the name of a popular, dead robber he finds crucified named Maternus and goes about hiding with the help of the governor of Rome, Pertinax. Though the story diverts from Sextus after the first chapter and emphasizes characters by naming chapters after them, he is frequently mentioned as an integral part of the story and in the chapter named after the historical physician Galen, he shows that he is brave enough to take the opportunity himself to kill Commodus. One can relate Sextus to Maximus in the 2000 movie "Gladiator" when he says determinedly to Derek Jacobi's Gracchus character, "I will kill Commodus."
As I mentioned, there are fictional elements involved. For one, no one can put blame on Galen for making poison that tried to kill Commodus, though it is likely he prepared the poison considering that he was Commodus' physician. Also, it is not probable that Commodus had a double though there could have been one. Commodus going as the name of Paulus the gladiator also is not probable but there is historical accuracy here since Paulus was inscribed in Commodus' statues. Either way, there is no way to prove that a lot of these fictional elements are false, which means that there is a possibility that this is what could have happened in reality.
I recommend this book for those educated in the Roman Empire's history, since there are numerous references to previous Emperors and historical people, like Julius Caesar. Overall, I give the book four stars out of five, and I encourage those who are interested in the subject to buy the book.

The video game industry has always drawn upon works of fiction for inspiration--sooner or later, the process had to reverse itself. Krondor the Betrayal began its life as the bestselling role-playing video game of all time, written by Raymond E. Feist for Dynamix Inc. Feist, whose Serpentwar Saga has sold millions of copies and established him as one of the most popular fantasy authors of modern times, also wrote this novelization which places the action of the game in the context of his fully-realized fantasy setting, Midkemia.
Feist's fans are legion. Longtime readers will be delighted at the return of popular characters Pug the Wizard, Squire Locklear, and others, as they face the menace of a marauding elf war-chieftain and a mysterious cabal of wizards. But first-time Feist readers may find Krondor the Betrayal baffling and tiresome--without the momentum of the larger series, much of the story's effect is diminished. The video game influence in this book is unmistakable--as evidenced by an encumbrance of sword fights, multilevel conspiracy, and two-dimensional characters. Anyone who enjoys reading about Midkemia will be thrilled to play the demonstration version of the CD-ROM game (included with the book). --Brendan J. LaSalle
Book Description
The RiftWar is done. But a fearsome army of trolls and renegade humans, emboldened by the drug of destruction, has risen in strength from the ashes of defeat. There is one, however, who defies the call to battle...
New York Times bestselling fantasist Raymond E. Feist returns to a beleaguered realm of wonders and magic-where war is an enduring legacy; where blood swells the rivers and nourishes the land. Attend to this hitherto untold chapter in the violent history of Midkemia -- a towering saga of great conflicts, brave acts and insidious intrigues. It is the story of a traitor who rejects the brutality of his warlike kind and casts his lot with the human targets of their fierce aggression. It tells of mysterious deaths and sinister machinations -- and signs of a time when the fate of many civilizations rested in the able, unfaltering hands of RiftWar veterans Squire Locklear and cunning their-turned-squire Jimmy the Hand. It chronicles the powerful awakening of Owyn -- apprentice magician of untried strengths -- and celebrates the selfless achievements of Pug, the great sorcerer of two worlds. Welcome now to astonishing new corners of a world you have not yet fully explored-and prepare to experience true excitement, blood chilling terror...and the triumph born from the doom aimed at the beating heart of a kingdom.

Yamabushi's mini reviews XXVIII.......2007-02-09
Dull and lazily written. Fiest, from what I read, apparently based this book off of missions for a video game that he helped plot. And it shows.
Books based on video games are no treat.......2006-04-24
Loosely based on the computer RPG "Betrayal at Krondor", this book is not up to par to the original trilogy or even the later sequels. More of a rehash than an original story. Worth it only if you are a fan, which unfortunately, I am.
I couldn't finish this book.......2005-07-06
This is the first book by Feist that I TRIED to read. Other reviewers seem to have much higher regard for his earlier books and I may give them a try. This book was unreadable and I quit half way through- which I NEVER do. The dialog was ridiculous "He said blah blah blah" "And then he said blah blah" "and then he said". It really seemed like a 7th grader wrote the entire book.
Krondor the Betrayal.......2005-06-12
Ehh its a god book..but leaves much untouched like who the new charcter...(Crawler, and the suspose dead Dark elf cheiftain) (...) I gives this a two only beause it a new book to a new seris and lacks lots of surpirses and and fun that happen with the Riftwar saga. So im looking forward to book 2 and seeing if my question can come anwser
Not for those new to Feist, not for all Feist fans either.......2005-01-10
Although I have never played the role playing game the book was based, I found myself playing it at many points in this book. The book definitely reflects its game.
However, it's not a bad read for Feist fans because the already present rich history and backdrop of Midkemia and the characters of Jimmy and Pug lend the book the character it lacks as a stand-alone (which is what makes it not so good a read for those new to Feist).
It could have used more imagination. Gorath's character was the best new thing in this book.
3/5 stars for effort and Gorath.
-Huge Feist fan

From the screenwriter of the Man-Thing movie comes this prequel exploring the disappearance of the local sheriff in a backwater bayou town plagued by mysterious and horrific events. Featuring some of the cast from the film, as well as a new character - an unflappable insurance-claims adjuster named Nathan Mehr - this story further explores the mythology and backstory introduced in the movie. Collects Man-Thing #1-3; Savage Tales #1, the creature's first appearance; and Adventure Into Fear #16, the story that inspired the movie!
Customer Reviews:
Very good comic book.......2005-06-23
If you are a Hans Rodionoff fan such as myself you will not be disappointed in this book at all. This is a prequel of sorts to the movie of the same name, which is also written by Hans. The art work in this series is very good as is the story line. For those of you who think this might be anything like Swamp Thing you would be mistaken. Man-Thing is a "monster" with one purpose and thats to kill anything that moves in the swamp :) Check it out, I think you'll like it. If you are looking for one of the ultimate Hans Rodionoff books you should check out 'Lovecraft.' I pretty much stick to Horror comics and it is hands down one of the creepiest out there.
Surprisingly good story, plus extras.......2005-05-02
I suspect that the 3-issue limited series MAN-THING: WHATEVER KNOWS FEAR... was really released by Marvel as a sort of advance apology for their dreaded Man-Thing movie, which went from a proposed cinematic release to a video release to a final premiere on the Sci-Fi Channel (not a good sign there). The surprising thing is, the series actually has a decent story. Written by Hans Rodionoff and illustrated with appropriate creepiness by Kyle Hotz, it gives a sort of prequel to the movie, but I say it's 100x better. The story follows the activities of no-nonsense insurance claim adjuster Nathan Mehr, who arrives in a Louisiana town to substantiate claims of vandalism at a construction site. Of course, it's not "quite" the kind of vandalism he expects, and his investigation leads him into a confrontation with everyone's favorite empathic bog-monster. Rodionoff writes an engaging (and somewhat funny) story, presenting a main character who, in a welcome turn of events, is not portrayed as some typical macho, cool, hip dude, but simply as an adjuster whose primary motivation is to do his job. Hotz' artwork continues to break further away from his early Kelly Jones lookalike style, but it remains equally as dark, and his detailed rendering gives the Man-Thing the appearance of a monster that is truly made of the swamp, rather than just a pile of muck.
There are three extras, as well: the first Man-Thing story from SAVAGE TALES #1 (beautiful work); ADVENTURE INTO FEAR #16, a fairly boring story that apparently inspired the movie (complete with a hilarious fight scene between body-building construction workers and kung-fu protestors); and some of Hotz' pencils for panels and various covers.
Hope the movie is this good.......2004-11-11
This TPB collects the 3 issue mini-series that serves as a prequel to the upcoming and much delayed Man-Thing film, the latest Marvel comic to film adaptation. Written by the film's screenwriter Hans Rodionoff and illustrated by Hulk and the Hood artist Kyle Hotz, Whatever Knows Fear is a more than solid horror tale, centering around an insurance claim investigator sent to a murky, swampy town to investigate the strange phenomina regarding a less than reputable corporation, and just what happened to a missing security guard and why is the other rambling about swamp monsters. This TPB is surprisingly suspenseful, and Hotz' art shines through, and the ending does actually leave you anticipating to see what happens next in the film. That is, if the Man-Thing movie ever comes out.

Customer Reviews:
A worthwhile Read!.......2007-08-06
This book provides helpful insight as to why we are the way we are. I used this for a book club book and the conversation it generated was not only worthwhile, but especially entertaining.
Freedom.......2006-03-07
This book was such a gift to read. It gave me such freedom in my spiritual journey. I always thought that I wasen't spiritual because I couldn't concentrate when I was reading the bible or I didn't have a special "time" when I read the bible. Understanding my personality and how God has made me helped me to realize that I'm fine just the way I am and God loves me no matter what!!! Thank you Marita for writing such an incredible book.
Guilt Free Spiritual Growth.......2006-03-01
By understanding my personality's strengths and weakness, I have come to realize my personality affects more than just how I approach housework, friendships, marriage or parenting - my personality affects all areas of my life including my spiritual growth. In this book I was able to identify how each different personality approaches God, daily devotions and spiritual maturity. It is so important to understanding that it is "OK" to be different from one another. God made us all different so the world wouldn't be monotone - imagine a one-note symphony! This information gives me the freedom to accept God's love for me according to my own personality and in return helped me learn how to give that grace and love to others. Because, life is all about the LOVE.

The latest edition of James Halliday's Australia and New Zealand Wine Companion is as indispensable and comprehensive as ever. Features include profiles of over 1,300 Australian and new Zealand wineries, expert tasting notes for over 1,800 wines, top wine selections, advice on what to drink now and what to cellar and an index of wineries by region. A must have tool for all lovers of Australian and New Zealand wine.
??
James Halliday is Australia's most respected wine critic and wine writer. In 1995 he received the Maurice O'Shea Award for his outstanding contribution to the Australian wine industry. He is now an executive at Winepros Limited and regularly judges at wine shows both in Australian and overseas.
Customer Reviews:
You have to be an expert.......2002-02-12
Being an avid 'winey', and an Australian, I was excited to receive the bible on Antipodeon wines. Well I was a little disappointed; If you are thoroughly versed with the regions in Aus and NZ, then this is perfect for you; But being 8 years removed from my country, I discovered that the lack of info on specific regions was a negative for this publication. I find Hugh Johnson's guide a far more useful tool(although he does not reference the wineries as thoroughly).
A mostly excellent overview........2001-08-03
This wine is a good guide for those interested in Australia & New Zealand wine. I do have two quibbles: Mr. Halliday does not seem to always specify when a particular wine is available in the US, and the index is a mess. All the wines are indexed according to the region they're from - so you can't just look up Hunter's, Allan Scott or Cloudy Bay in the index UNLESS you know what region they're from! I feel this second quibble is actually a somewhat serious problem that should be adjusted in future editions. Otherwise, a great sourcebook.
It gets better and better.........2001-05-22
James Halliday has done it again. This is still THE bible of AU/NZ wineinformation. In this new 2001 edition, we finally (a long time wish) see a rating of the best AU & NZ producers of various grapes (eg CS, CS blends, Shiraz's, etc). Some vintage information is also included now. Again, even more producers are included (than the previous year) and the books seems to grow and grow.. I still would like some label-photos, although..
Verdict: a 'must buy' for anyone who wants a thorough overview of the best wines/producers/vintages/etc of Australia and New Zealand...
great book but needs an index by region.......2000-11-06
an essential travel and buying guide for oz wines. arranged alphabetically by producer but wish there was also an index by region. for that purpose check out the pocket-sized wines of australia by the same author
Still THE reference-book on Australia and NZ.......2000-03-10
So, what's the difference to the '99 edition ? Well, not much... The pro's : - 127 new vineries included and still written in the same Parker'ish style
The con's : - still no vintage charts (neither regional nor individually, which is a shame) - Also a listing (classification) of the best producers would be nice
It would also be nice to have some sort of description of the various regions, (eg for advise of where to get the best varietals/grapestyles)
Some pictures (labels) would be nice also, by the way..
But, nevertheless...this is still a good book, so if you need those updates (like I do !) , then you gotta have this issue.
Final word: I give this book 5 stars, basically because there's no competition - there's still room for some improvements...

Outdated.......2006-01-15
The photos in this book look like they were shot in the 80's. Hideous wallpaper, ugly paint colors, and gross fabric. Also this book is almost page by page an exact copy of the early edition entitled "Ideas for Great Kid's Rooms" ISBN 0376017546.
Yes there are a few good ideas in this book so I gave it two stars instead of one, but unless you can get it used under two bucks, don't waste your money.
Great ideas.......2001-01-05
This book is jam-packed with great ideas. Some of the rooms are just unbelievable.
The colors, patterns and storage ideas are very helpful. And having all of the photos helps with getting the kids involved in picking out what they would like in their rooms.
My oldest daughter likes window seats, and we saw a bed in here with a curved entrance made like a window seat, and she really liked it. So, I made her one similiar to the one in the book and she really loves her bed.
It's worth the buy.......2000-04-15
I brought this book when I was planning a nursery for my little girl. It gives lots of realistic ideas budget wise and safety wise. There are lots of photos and it gives good tips on how to plan a room for your child that he and you will not be sick of after a year or two.
Elaborate Designs.......2000-02-20
This is a fun books with many good ideas. I enjoyed the "fantasy" aspect of designing a child's room. The main setback for us with executing many of the designs is budget limitations. Also, be aware that this is the same book as Sunset's "Ideas for Great Kids' Rooms". We bought both not realizing they are the same book.

Customer Reviews:
Not so great kid's rooms.......2005-12-30
Some of the rooms in this book are just plain yucky. There are some okay ideas for projects, but many of them are not ones I would use in a child's room. If you are looking for practical ideas on getting started, choosing a color scheme or theme, tying the room together, etc. this book isn't very helpful. You can draw from the rooms pictured, but many of them are not attractive at all. There were a couple of rooms I did really like, but no helpful information about how the look was achieved. I would not recommend this book at all only because there are so many that are fifty times better out there!
Designs dreams are made of........2004-11-23
We found out she was creative and clever from her first couple books, but this one puts her in a whole new league. Scheffler is becoming the Renoir of crafts and home design: eye catching ideas that lift the spirit and bring out the kid at heart (even for us who aren't kids anymore). I'm all thumbs, but I want to grab my paints and craft supplies and get cracking. Better yet, will you come and decorate my apartment, Carol?? Please!
I want to be a kid again!.......2002-11-08
I can't believe how beautiful the rooms are in this book. And there are so many useful ideas. Although I wouldn't consider myself exactly talented when it comes to crafts, there are actually projects in this book that I can handle and many more that I could easily hire someone to recreate for me. The room themes in the book are varied and fresh and not just for kid's rooms. In fact, there are ideas I am going to use in my bedroom and in other rooms in my home. Buy this book even if only to look at the pictures. You'll start there and be so overwhemed by how beautiful or creative something is that the next thing you know you'll be redecorating!
Book Description
Decorating a child’s room is very much like buying the child clothes: however terrific your choices, they’ll soon be outgrown and need replacing. That’s why Mom and Dad will really go for these 30 easy-to-build, money-saving projects—including several kinds of desks, a free-standing chalkboard, and jigsaw wall art. And it’s all based on revamping and accessorizing existing furniture to keep pace with a youngster’s changing needs, rather than starting from scratch. None of the projects require advanced woodworking skills and most can be completed in a single day. From the treasure chest table made from an old toy chest to the Drop-Leaf Flower Desk or Goal! Bed, every project features cool stuff that kids will love.

Book Description
Bristling with demons, grotesques, and bizarre apparitions, the graphic work of Odilon Redon has often seemed to be the product of a mind unhinged. In The Temptation of Saint Redon, Stephen F. Eisenman argues instead that these works are Redon's conscious and considered response to changing social realities—an attempt to find refuge from the forces of modernization in an imaginative world of the macabre and the fantastic. Eisenman's careful attention to the circumstances of Redon's life (1840-1916) allows him to bring into focus the interconnections between Redon's complex style and the culture and society of his time. Born and raised on a sixteenth-century estate near Bordeaux, Redon was immersed as a child in traditional rural culture. "I spent my entire childhood in the Médoc completely free, among peasant children," he recalled in his memoirs. "I heard them tell supernatural tales—witches still exist there."
Indeed, local tales and legends of witches, ghosts, one-eyed monsters, evil eyes, and wood fairies figure prominently in Redon's graphic works, which he called his noirs, or "blacks." After formal training at Bordeaux and Paris in the 1850s and 1860s, Redon began to chart his independent artistic course. Eisenman shows how, rejecting both naturalism and classicism, Redon, a prototypical Symbolist, found in grotesque and epic genres the expression of organic communities and precapitalist societies. He places Redon's desire for this imagined world of superstitious simplicity a desire manifest in his entire mature artistic practice in the context of contemporary avant-garde movements.
Redon's great noirs of the 1870s and 1880s, dreamlike configurations of seemingly irreconcilable elements from portraits, still lifes, and landscapes, show an increasingly subtle control of connotation and a complex indebtedness to caricature, allegory, and puns. Many of the noirs also visually interpret works by like-minded authors, including Baudelaire, Flaubert, Poe, and Mallarmé, one of Redon's close friends. Eisenman's analysis of the noirs underscores Redon's interest in creating an imaginative, even fantastic art, that could act directly on the human spirit. In addition to deepening our understanding of Redon and his art, The Temptation of Saint Redon exposes a link between place, politics, personal history, and the artistic imagination.

Customer Reviews:
Save your money. This book is garbage.......2003-07-24
I feel like trashing this book, but how do you trash trash? How do you poop on poop? I am happy with everything else I got from amazon.com, but this book is... . Make a note of the author's name. I will never waste my money on anything he writes ever again. I won't buy his books even if he uses a pseudonym. How did a great publisher like Birch Lane ever pass on this, anyway?
it sucked.......1999-03-29
it sucke
The Worst Book I Ever Tried to Read.......1999-03-27
I usually don't write negative reviews but I want to save people from buying this book. If Amazon.com had 0 stars I would have picked that. Giving it 1 star seems too much.
I was interesed in reading more about Ms. Stone due to an incredible interview I saw her give on cable (I believe it was Inside The Actors Studio on Bravo). She literally had the audience spell-bound. She was articulate, compassionate and a class-act. Nothing like she is portrayed in this book. It is poorly written, poorly edited and the authors name-dropping is so pathetic you almost feel sorry for him.
Save your money. Maybe Ms. Stone will write an auto-biography.
TERRIBLE!.......1997-11-28
Does as much justice to Sharon Stone as "Sliver" did for her career. Only good for begining readers, fans of tabloid trash, or Stone fans who love dissing Demi Moore or Madonna. Wait for the TV movie.
A piece of crap.......1997-09-10
This book reads like the author dictated it from his desk half-drunk,with a bunch of magazine articles about Sharon Stone as a reference. Poorly written; as a book, its a mess. Even public figures should not be subjected to this type of abuse. Its laughable in the way names are dropped that have nothing to do with the subject and then placed in an index as if this were a serious book. The author's attempt at jokes are
embarassing. Unbelievable.
