Book Description

Embarking from England in the early 1800s, seventeen-year-old Lavinia Andrews and her family land in the tiny Newfoundland settlement of Cape Random, a remote fishing outpost set in a stark, rocky landscape on the edge of the sea. Here the Andrewses find themselves among a strange and intriguing group of outcasts with whom they must eke out a living. As the community grows—struggling to survive against the dangers of starvation, accident, and illness—deep friendships develop, as do marriages, rivalries, and intrigues, all set against the backdrop of the magnificent and wild ocean. Epic in scope, luminous in language, Cape Random is a lyrical tribute to the decency and kindness possible among people even in the most difficult circumstances. This title was previously published in Canada as Random Passage.

5 out of 5 stars a great book but beware.......2005-08-06

This is a truly wonderful book. Bernice Morgan puts you right in the middle of the drama of early Newfoundland. However do not buy Random Passage. It is the same book. I found out the hard way.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is WONDERFUL.......2003-08-20

My husband is from Newfoundland and I still dont know much about this island off of Canada. We currently live in Ontario.

Then the mini-series came out and WOW I was blown away..Ok I'm pretty sure this is fiction but whose to say that it didnt really happen or couldve happened.

I really bonded with the character Mary Bundle the most. Her life was harsh but she never ever let it break her. She was/is what this country needs more of..strong resiliant women!!

I highly recommend everyone read this book!!!

4 out of 5 stars Exceptional tale of a family , survival and love............2002-09-18

Cape Random is a brilliant novel that tells the story of an 1800's English working class family, the Andrews. They are forced to flee from their home in order to escape being imprisoned or hung. The Andrews wind up seeking passage to a land far away in the hold of a ship where pigs are normally held. The harsh reality of their situation does not improve when they are taken from the ship.
They are put ashore in Cape Random a tiny settlement on the bleak coast of Newfoundland with no supplies, no viable skills and little hope of surviving the impending winter season.
The artistic writing of Bernice Morgan paints a vivid picture of what the family sees as they arrive and the emotional state of a desperate and scared family. This is a tale of what people can manage to do in order to survive. The conditions and situations faced draw the reader into the tale and pull at you emotionally, as you watch those you know struggling just to barely stay alive.
The relationships between the residents of Cape Random are clear and complex and as time passes and the community expands with children the complexity also expands.
This is an amazing book that deals with love, survival, faith, hope and the tough challenges imposed by mother nature, as well as the challenges that human nature puts forth.
This is an exceptional and thought provoking book.

5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2002-07-18

In addition to the great plot and characterization mentioned by other reviewers, I found Morgan's writing style graceful. That's the first word that come's to mind when I think of this book. Her treatment of characters with questionable(?) motives and behavior is objective; their redeeming qualities are also presented. She reveals the beauty of each person and their role in an almost incestuous community. Her careful treatment of her characters and the skills they build to survive in the weather, community, various types of deprivation is as graceful as her prose.

The legendary team of Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman take to the sky on dragonback again with the final dispatch from their latest voyage to the land of Krynn in the War of Souls trilogy. In volume two, Dragons of a Lost Star, the mysterious "One God" behind the irrepressible Mina's miraculous rise to power is revealed. Yes, Dark Queen Takhisis is up to her old tricks. This time, however, she has stolen the entire planet of Krynn and hidden it away from her fellow deities. Now, she is seeking to bring the entire populace (both the living and the dead) under her fickle sway through Mina's zealous proselytizing. Who will stop her dark quest? Who else? The troublemaking and time-traveling kender--Tasslehoff Burrfoot.

Unfortunately, with the mystery of the "One God" revealed, much of the narrative impetus that made the first two books page-turners is lost. However, while there isn't much left to write about in Dragons of a Vanished Moon, the scenery is beautiful. There is an Elven exodus across the "plains of dust," stubborn Solamnic knights, cunning dragons, plotting wizards, and a full helping of Kender antics as Tasselhoff assumes the role of fly in the dark queen's ointment. The conclusion is a textbook deus ex machina but fans should enjoy this book for what it is--another chance to return to the wonderful world of Krynn with its two most competent guides at the helm. --Jeremy Pugh

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Very weak novel written by great authors.......2007-07-05

I have been a fan on Weiss and Hickman's writing for several years now, reading all of their DragonLance novels as well as other works. And I've never been disappointed. Until now.

Dragons of a Fallen Sun, the first book of the trilogy was highly entertaining, and gripping. It was up to the par of Weiss and Hickman's work. Most of book two was good as well. And then when the identity of the "One God" became revealed, the series took a dramatic turn for the worse. Melodramatic, cheesy, and overwraught.

A further complaint I had with this novel was the reappearance of Raistlin. It's painfully obvious that the authors love this character, and I don't really understand why. He was interesting enough for the original six books. But I've had enough of it--even when his character isn't physically present, some character or other is obsessing over Raistlin.

I do give them credit for the characters of Mina and Galdar. They are compelling, and provide a freshness to the Dragon Lance saga. I trust that the next books Weiss and Hickman put out will be better.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome conclusion to the series.......2007-04-16

Well, this is the last in the War of Souls Trilogy. Interestingly, some could say this is the last book of a 11 book series (although Margaret Weis continues further with Amber and Ashes whick I'm reading now).

The character development is excellent. For example, I found that I did not like Gerald's character in the earlier books, but this book changed my mind about him. GAlder also is a very interesting character who seems to be in a tough situation with the one god.

Questions that often linger reading this book are, can the people overcome the one god? Will the other gods find the world in time to help? Where are the dragons? Does Tas really have to go back and be stepped on by Chaos or is there a better way? What is the ultamate fate of Palin and Dalamar?

BEsides Tas...another hero of the lance mysteriously appears, but I'm not telling who. You must read and find out.

It seems like any book my Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickmen is good. They are just plain good writers. Althought I don't believe this trilogy as a whole tops the almighty Dragonlance chronicles, it comes quite close. I would recommend reading these Dragonlance books in this order before reading this one:

Dragons of the Autumn Twilight
Dragons of the Winter Night
Dragons of the Spring Dawning
Time of the Twins
War of the Twins
Test of the Twins
Second Generation
Dragons of the Summer Flame
Dragons of the Fallen Sun
Dragons of the Lost Star
Dragons of the Vanished Moon

5 out of 5 stars In the land of twists..........2007-03-02

I am thrilled with this series, and certainly, with this book. I love the different twists and the loose ends that get tied up. I had been missing Lord Soth and it was excellent to sit in his commanding presence again. The appearance of the minotaurs in this book has to be among my favorite scenes in the book. Any of you who have read this story know the scene I mean!

And I was especially intrigued by the treatise written by Valthonis at the end, describing what had actually happened to the world, what Takhisis actually did and how Tasslehoff actually fits into all of it. I'd always enjoyed the afterwords that Weis and Hickman had put into the Death Gate novels and I was glad to see one here.

So, as always, I eagerly await their next book (Dragons of the Highlord Skies) and I say, keep on writing!

5 out of 5 stars Rest In Peace, War Of Souls........2006-08-21

The first time I read this book was before I read the other two (Dragons of a Fallen Sun, Dragons of a Lost Star) so i'll admit I didn't really understand it. However after the other two books arrived, I read it again and all I could do was gape at the beauty and genius of the book. So, to start with the real review: this book is flawlessly built with no problems that I could see. The characters were perfect! they behaved like they should after what happened in the first two books. Tasslehoff is shown to be truly mature at the end with a full understanding of what a hero must do after behaving like an irresponsible kender for the pther two books. Dalamar behaves once again like the power hungry wizard who'll do anything do get the magic, Palin acts like a hero once again, fighting the One God to save Ansalon though it may cost him his life. Odila's not that much better but thts okay with me, as all she needed to do was stop laughing about everything and she does that in the book. I especially liked the change that came over Gerard. He learns to stop being so cynical and mean to people and becomes a true knight. I liked how an older character returned and had a major role in the book. I loved Lord Soth's return and repent, which shows he is human. The gods doing stuff in the book was also nice and contributed a lot to the plot. I liked the change that came over Gilthas in the end and how he also became a sort of a hero. The suprise ending was a great part. I loved it.
To conclude: this book is great, a must read for any Dragonlance fan.

3 out of 5 stars I offer my applause, but I am finished with this tale now........2006-06-20

I have to give it to Weis and Hickman: they are willing to develop their world in ways that the average fan mightn't like. I know I basically started giving up on the DragonLance saga after the War of the Twins because slowly, all the heroes I knew and enjoyed began to die. At this, generations later, I find it difficult to care about this new pantheon of heroes and enemies.

However, I have to admit that that's purely selfish, and also that these heroes and enemies are a whole heck of a lot more varied than the Heroes of the War of the Lance. Straight-up good and evil is starting slowly to disappear in this plane, and worst of all the goodguys we feel attached to most are making terrible mistakes. It certainly keeps one reading the seven hundred or so pages to make sure everything turns out all right in the end.

Now all of that might change with the denouement of this volume, which took me several years to get around to because the previous book depressed me so much. However, I must say that this world is now removed enough from the world I invested in during a completely different time of my life that I'm not really interested in it anymore. For those first getting into DragonLance, it's probably quite a magnificent work, and to them I eagerly suggest they go in backward order, ending with the War of the Lance. I did something somewhat to that effect myself and ended up enjoying how the tales changed within the setting as subsequent generations slowly forgot intricacies and exaggerated others.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Well, I am a fan of Weiss & Hickmann so..........2007-07-08

Great books. I have to admit that vol. 2 was a bit slow and dull at first but vol. 1 and 3 and most of vol. 2 made up for this. Didn't much care for the lovestory between Silvanoshei and the dark knight Mina so all this about Silanosheis love that wasn't returned is a bit dull for me (yes yes, I am a guy). But all in all I would rate this as a 5 star product. Another great story from Weiss & Hickmann.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Weis and Hickman's previous novels.......2007-06-05

First let me start off by saying that I did enjoy these books. But I enjoyed the previous books more. The Chronicles Trilogy was the first set in the Dragonlance world and I must say the best. It all sort of went downhill from there, albeit a long hill with a small angle but still downhill. I really thought that with The Second Generation and Dragons of Summer Flame that led up to The War of Souls Trilogy, that there would be a "rebirth" (if you will) of the Dragonlance Series. But sadly that wasn't to be. An IMPORTANT SIDE NOTE: I have been led to believe that the writers, Weis and Hickman, actually have very little creative control over the Dragonlance Series. I believe that these books are meant to be companions to the world of D & D. I enjoy reading not throwing dice to see how much damage I do. As such, maybe they threw dice to see how the storyline would unfold. I don't know.

The Good:
The story is great. The action is great. Tas the loveable and unlikely hero is back. There is a lot of action and intrigue to keep you interested. The whole trilogy is one big twist after another.

The Bad:
I'm afraid there may be more bad than good...but only just. The number one problem, and it is SERIOUSLY BAD, is the typos. Did anyone actually proofread this book? I mean seriously it is bad. By the middle of Dragons of a Lost Star (second book in the trilogy), I was almost ready to call it quits just because it was so hard to make any sense of it. Misspelled words...bad punctuation...missing words...extra words. Just really, really, really bad. They need to fire whoever edited this book.

Now about the problems with the stories themselves. POTENTIAL SPOILER

My best advise to the readers about these books and this goes for pretty much ALL of the Dragonlance novels: Don't get attached to ANY character because they ALL die. The writers spend 3 books building a character and getting them developed then kill them. Why would you do that? Take a lesson from R.A. Salvatore or Terry Goodkind and keep your main characters ALIVE. It's what keeps readers coming back for more. If Salvatore had killed Drizzt after his first trilogy, Salvatore's career as a writer would have been a lot less eventful. Same goes for Goodkind's Richard in the Sword of Truth books.
Let's see who has died along the way to The War of Souls. Keep in mind these are MAJOR CHARACTERS!
Sturm Brightblade, Tanis Half-Elven, Caramon Majere, Raistin Majere, Tika Majere, Alhana Starbreeze, Crysania, Goldmoon, Laurana, Palin Majere, Riverwind, Steel Brightblade, Tanin Majere, Kitiara Uth Matar (who needed more development), Berem the Everman (death was justified), Flint Fireforge, Tas Burfoot (dead but brought back) and I'm sure there were others but I think you get the picture. And again these were major characters. Why even bother developing them if they are so expendable? Heck, I wouldn't even bother being creative with the names. Maybe I can write a Dragonlance novel. "Here is Sam. Sam is an elf. Sam has to overcome insurmountable odds to save the world. Sam overcame the insurmountable odds and saved the world. Now Sam is dead." There, I just wrote a whole Dragonlance novel in five sentences.
What was the point of "The Second Generation" and "Dragons of Summer Flame"? They introduce new characters and then killed them all. Stupid.

Summary of my review:
These books have a great story, great plot, and great characters who will all die. Or if that sentence had as many typos as these books...Thes books have great story great plot and grate charactrse woh will all dye.

3 out of 5 stars Engrossing but ultimately unsatisfying.......2007-05-13

I have been a long-time fan of Weis and Hickman and their Dragonlance books. They have an uncanny ability to write engrossing stories full of conflict and angst and failure that somehow still come together at the end on a note of acceptance and hope. In general, the characters end the stories as better people than they started them as, and the price the characters pay is redeemed by what they gain by the end. I looked forward to this new series. The story is certainly engrossing -- I found it hard to put the books down, even during the darkest and bleakest points in the story. But unlike their earlier works, Weis and Hickman don't manage to wrap this one up well. Several story lines end abruptly, as if Weis and Hickman just ran out of steam on them and gave up. More important, almost none of the characters end the story having learned anything important. The sacrifices made by the characters remain unredeemed at the end. I was left disappointed and unsatisfied. Go ahead and read the story -- it is well written. Just be prepared to feel incomplete at the end.

5 out of 5 stars A Dragon Story and Much More.......2007-05-08

What makes this series so fascinating are the set of characters, especially the kender, who adds just the right amount of comic relief, and the freshness that comes from a vivid imagination on the part of the authors. You won't feel like you've read anything like this before.

5 out of 5 stars Great Addition.......2007-03-27

I've been working on the first book of the three and so far I'm enjoying it as much as all the other Dragonlance Novels I've read. If you love the Dragonlance novels, you won't be upset with this pick.

                  Book Description

According to the teachings of the Kabbalah — a 4,000-year-old sacred body of mystical knowledge — individuals who choose to act in accordance with powerful universal principles can vastly improve their lives and find true, lasting fulfillment. Taking a mind-expanding journey into this ancient spiritual practice, world-renowned Kabbalist Rav Berg shows readers, including high-profile celebrities such as Madonna, Britney Spears, and Demi Moore, how to live in harmony with these universal laws while providing them with full access to a once-secret study. This intelligent, accessible guide illuminates time-honored methods for unleashing and maximizing personal potential, regaining self-determination, changing robotic behaviors into conscious control, and creating an individualized approach to finding contentment. A "workout for the mind," The Power of You also provides a full complement of powerful, practical techniques for tapping inner wells of happiness, fulfillment, peace, and joy.

                  4 out of 5 stars a bit misleading .......2007-07-22

While I found this book easy to read, it is one where the reader needs to be alert, aware and open to the author's important statements, insights and ideas, as there is no clear lead up to them, they just seem scattered here and there. It is perhaps a book more suitable to the person who has read material covering topics such as the power of the mind and the subconcious, as well as metaphysical and astrological interpretation of the Bible.
I did find that the numerous editorial/descriptive comments relating to the book and its aim misleading; such as, 'In these pages, Rav Berg reveals: How to reclaim the power of self-determination in every area of your life..' but the book itself never does this as a stand alone book. In order to understand and incorporate the ideas of the author into one's own life, one would really need to read his other books. For example, central to the author's work are his concepts 'The Desire to Receive for Oneself Alone', and 'The Desire to Receive For The Purpose of Sharing', yet one reads on and on waiting for a discourse on them, never to arrive, Even the chapter headed 'Restriction' doesn't go into what restriction stands for.
I think it would have been honest to say, 'read this book, but you need to read much more of my works, or become a student'.

3 out of 5 stars Kabbalah life movie.......2007-06-25

Good book, but not of the caliber of the others I have read on the topic. Maybe a little too advanced for me at this time.

                  1 out of 5 stars Not Impressed.......2007-01-09

This book is poorly written. Perhaps it would be helpful for someone who has already studied Kaballah, but I did not find it to be a helpful introduction.

5 out of 5 stars Great book about yourself.......2005-11-26

This book will teach you that you have the power to change your life and take control of it. It will help you discover how to take away your "ego" that controls you and brings chaos to your life. This book is a book to discover yourself and your potential.

1 out of 5 stars This book has nothing to do with Kabbalah........2005-05-15

I don't know where to begin. The "teachings" in this book simply have nothing to do with any form of Kabbalah. Berg is attempting to create a non-Jewish, for-profit version of Kabbalah by creating his own religion, and its just plain embarassing. This book in particular is just pop-psychology.

Frankly, all of Berg's books on Kabbalah are full of terrible translations, censored and edited texts, and horrible commentary. His "explanations" are rejected by all Jewish authorities, Orthodox and non-Orthodox, religious and academic. Berg is attempting to create a non-Jewish and for-profit version of Kabbalah, and it is just embarassing. Instead of reading his nonsense, please check out books on this subject by real authorities and good writers:

Read, for instance, "The Jewish Mystical Tradition", by Ben Zion Bokser; "Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism", by Gershom Scholem; "Zohar: Annotated & Explained" by Daniel Chanan Matt and Andrew Harvey

I would also suggest "The Wisdom of The Zohar: An Anthology of Texts", Ed. Isaiah Tishby, and translated from the Hebrew by David Goldstein.

I picked this up at a book sale and it has become a favorite. The instructions are easy to read and follow. With the exception of the rice dishes, everything I have tried has met or exceeded expectations. The salsas are VERY good and have pleased many a guest. I have ordered four more What's Cooking books and have no doubt that I will be just as pleased.

I found this book as an early collector of Chinese Snuff Bottles, and I certainly do not think there could be a better source book for either early or indeed continuing collectors. It gave me the insight, history and breadth of knowledge that I was looking for. This book should be a must in every Snuff Bottle collectors armament.

The bed is the first obvious place for quilts, followed closely by the wall. But how often have we seen them adorning the windows? As we learn from Pieced Roman Shades, quilts can make wonderful window treatments, at times resembling a rich tapestry curtain, and at other times evoking the magical appearance of stained glass. With excellent directions and extensive charts and colored diagrams, author Terrell Sundermann teaches us exactly how to create "window hangings," her combination of a wall hanging and a Roman shade. She explains all the details of construction, the practicalities of hanging and hardware, and the procedures for laying out a design and calculating the yardage. Four step-by-step projects walk us through all the specifics of producing three hangings and one valance design. Experienced quilters with the patience for very precise cutting and piecing (remember--with the sun shining through these hangings, every seam and corner join will be on exhibit) should enjoy this opportunity to create quilts geared to a new type of display. --Amy Handy

Color Therapy at Home presents an imaginative investigation into the subtle yet powerful effects of color in our everyday lives. Mark McCauley, an accomplished interior designer, explains why we associate certain emotional, physical, or intellectual traits with reds, yellows, greens, or blues. Blues, for example, provide feelings of restoration and clarity. Reds, on the other hand, lend an active, dynamic energy to a room. Dozens of dramatic photos illustrate how colors work alone and in combination to achieve desired effects. A clear vase of vibrant red cherries, for example, forms a witty complement to a wall painted a nurturing pale green. McCauley's writing is extremely associative, as when he asserts that "brown is the homburg hat of life. It is the furtive sip from the little brown jug that provides momentary warmth on cold winter afternoons."

Practical designer tips, such as how to test your color choices, tint ceilings, or dress your interiors in colors you love to wear, enhance the inspiring photographs and engaging text. The book closes with a chart of 264 traits one may wish to increase in one's life--such as healing, trusting, or understanding--then keys each trait to specific colors. For anyone planning to redesign an entire home or simply repaint the kitchen pantry, Color Therapy at Home is provocative guide to color's profound effects on our interior well-being. --Mary Ribesky

It is nice that the design industry has begun to look into spiritual healing therapies such as Chromotherapy. I have reviewed the color choices, however, and find they do not always match up with the truest teachings of Chromotherapy. So, if you are looking for a great design book that helps people associate their moods with color, this is nice. If you are truly wanting to trigger the brain's release of certain chemicals, you will need to find a hard core book on Chromotherapy.

As a design and decorating editor, I've found Color Therapy at Home to be a great resource. both at home and at work. The photos and text are inspiring and informative. I have a library of books on color, and this is the one I turn to again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Color Choice Quiz seperates this book from the pack.......2002-12-14

                              Pluses:
The photographs in this book are great. As you might imagine with a book by this title there is a bold use of color. The style is modern, but will probably stand the test of time. I like the way the book is sectioned into chapters that fit a particular mood you might want to create (e.g. colors for fantasy). Also, there are general decorating tips scattered throughout the book.

                              Bonus:
The color choice quiz. Listed from A-Z all the emotions/moods you could ask for. You choose which emotions/moods you want to promote in a room. Then, you look at the color choice key to see which color matches those emotions/moods.

                              Minuses:
After buying the book and looking at it more carefully, I realized something...it has some of the same pictures as a book which I also own titled Color Healing Home by Katherine Sorrell. For example, check out pg. 27 of Color Healing and pg.63 of Color Therapy.

How to differentiate between the two: Color Therapy focuses more on how to promote moods. It lists moods and tells you what colors enhance that mood. Color Healing Home gives you more choices of color hue. They have a page for each hue and then tell you what moods each of these hues promote. You say tomatoe and I say tomato. I decided to keep both books, but I am a color junkie.

                              Recommendation:
What makes Color Therapy standout is the color choice quiz. If that is something that interests you, I would recommend this book. Otherwise, it is a coin toss between Color Therapy and Color Healing, and other books with bold uses of color.

                              1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-09-19

I had hoped for more. The title sounded so intriguing. But what I got was nothing new. I have other decorating books (and magazine articles) that cover the same ground. Tips such as using your wardrobe as a guide to colors you want to live with are old clichés and don't always apply. (I wear only neutrals yet have a colorful house.)

5 out of 5 stars Contradictions of an American Legend.......2001-02-13

In his new biography Joseph Jefferson: Dean of American Theatre Arthur Bloom captures the life of one of the most compelling figures in the history of American Entertainment. As a comic actor and producer, Joseph Jefferson stood alone at the head of his art. In terms of financial and critical success, Jefferson had no rival. He built this success, for the most part, by perfecting a stage version of Washington Irving's "Rip Van Winkle". A role which Bloom shows Jefferson lived off-stage as well. Like Will Rogers and comics who followed, Jefferson traded on a home-spun simple image. For years and years audiences packed houses to see the simple character Rip experience the extraordinary. However, behind this mask was a man who lived a luxuriant life, and cultivated fame at the cost of artistic growth. In his life, Jefferson was filled with contradictions. He was the common man in public, and a pampered man in private.

It is the contradictions in Jefferson's life that Bloom reveals for the first time in this biography, and captures with great detail. Before he died, Jefferson had published and enormous autobiography which is charming and seemingly the last word on the subject of Jefferson's life. Fortunately, Bloom penetrates the amiable facade of Jefferson without viciousness. Indeed, the contradictions which Jefferson would have hid from the public, make him all the more appealing as subject for biography. Jefferson's response to the civil war, his relationship with his wives, his temperament as a manager, his impoverished childhood--all of these subjects keep this book from falling into the realm of the dry theatre biography.

Born into a theatrical family in 1829, he made his debut as an infant in crowd scene. His work as an actor would end only with his death in 1905. In his lifetime, Jefferson was praised as an actor of comedy touched with pathos. Like Robin Williams of today, this sentimental side was embraced by some and rejected by others. In this biography, the praise and criticism co-exist with dynamic results.

Wisely, Bloom has found a way to balance the details of Jefferson's 76 years of life at a swift pace. His method is to present the narrative followed by a large appendix. The core of the book is 300 pages, but what follows is another 200 pages of footnotes and performance information. While the appendix is not needed to appreciate the book, it holds additional colorful stories and odd bits of information. Bloom's style is straight-forward, clear, and he supports his work with details. At times, the biography is even quite fresh and witty. In discussing Jefferson's All-Star production of "The Rivals" , Bloom quotes a letter from Jefferson: "We all lived in four cars which were provided for us and during the whole four weeks of the trip, I never heard a cross word". Bloom responds: "If Jefferson never heard a cross word among ten star actors living together for four weeks in a railway train, it is probably because he was going deaf'. Bloom then provides evidence that there was much unhappiness on that tour.

Another strength of the book is the description of Jefferson's acting style. As an artist, Jefferson was consistently praised for his natural style. He achieved humor without artifice. His work as a comic actor seems to shatter many stero-types about 19th century theatre. He was an innovator. There is no question of Jefferson's artistic ability, but even here Bloom does not take anything for granted. Using criticism, promptbooks, and recordings, he is able to communicate Jefferson's unique artistic accomplishment in a clear way, without becoming clinical. In his autobiography, Joseph Jefferson wrote with great eloquence about the craft of acting...communicating with great clarity and passion. Arthur Bloom proves to be Jefferson's equal in this area.

While the first quarter of the book moves slowly, the momentum picks up and the picture of Jefferson emerges with contradictions, frailties, strengths and more. His life spanned from the days when actors were denied burial in a church (Jefferson's view of religion is colored by this, another delightful contradiction), to the days when, at the end of his life, successful actors had risen to be honored men in society. By focusing closely on the life of Jefferson, Bloom indirectly captures the evolution of theatre in America.

Although one wishes for more information on the relationship between Edwin Booth and Jefferson, and for more details about Jefferson's relationship with his children, it is difficult to fault the author. Jefferson's life was so long, and there is so much to cover that one is grateful for the amount of compelling detail Bloom is able to present. This biography will stand as a cornerstone for future works on Joseph Jefferson and the American Theatre. "Joseph Jefferson: The Dean of the American Theatre" is as innovative and compelling as its subject. Who could have imagined that the real life of Joseph Jefferson was more engaging than the story told in his autobiography?
