Book Description
Peacock the Jew is nine years old and living in the Esfahan ghetto when she marries Solomon the Man. She is the descendant of a three-thousand-year-old tribe of Jews -- the oldest community in diaspora, a people largely unknown to the outside world. He is a singer in the royal court, a wealthy man known for his good looks and his charm. A decade later, she will become the first woman in her ghetto ever to have left her husband.
Against the backdrop of two hundred years of history, CRY OF THE PEACOCK traces the story of a Jewish woman caught in the turmoil of twentieth-century Iran. Told in a series of wondrous linked tales that weave a rich and epic tapestry, it is a magical journey inside the Iranian nation and its people. For the first time in any Western language this story of Iranian Jews offers an insider's glimpse into one of the most critical parts of the world today.

A Quick and Interesting Read.......2007-08-03
I couldn't put the book from the time I started reading it. Following the family through several generations was fascinating, especially in the context of the different historical events in Iran. Since I do not know much about Iranian/Persian history, I cannot speak to that portion of the book. I just enjoyed the book for the story it told and the glimpse it gave into the culture for Jews during this time period.
HAUNTING & BEAUTIFUL.......2004-08-31
This is one of the most incredible books I've ever read. In fact, I've read it twice just to savor the language and re-enter the lives of Ester and Solomon the Man and all of the rest. It matters not if you are Iranian or Jewish, this book is a story for everyone. The characters don't just get under your skin, they burrow deep and fester, causing you to scratch and scrape until they burst forth in all of their beautiful splendor. PLEASE READ!
Beautiful and Magical..........2004-08-05
Beautifuly written beautiful story about beautiful ancient Persia and more...
With lots of facts from history and culture of Persia (now called Iran) I found this book educational and yet magical with the fascinating story plot and the way it was written.
This was one of this kind of books which one doesn't want to put down and after turning to the last page one wishes it wasn't over...
Good Novel But..........2003-09-23
Cry of the Peacock by Gina B. Nahai, is such nice and intersting novel that I couldn't put it down and I had to keep reading until I was too tired to hold the book. But as a book about the history of jews in Iran It does not do any good and I think much what goes on in the book about the jews is far from reality. but It does give the reader a general Idea of how the Muslims treated jews in Iran.
Wonderful - even if Life=Tragedy after a while........2003-07-25
I loved the writer's style. The story was very well-paced, and there was never any part where I was yawning and resisting the urge to flick on the TV. The story of Peacock and her family are well interspersed with stories of separate (though related, plotwise) people, and actual historical facts. The only thing was (and this is also, most likely, a historical fact) that this book heaped so much misery upon its characters that after a while, it just became 'things that happened.' The impact of the book lay in the sheer weight of misfortune, rather than any single heartbreaking mishap. 9.5/10
Book Description
Hong Ying surpasses her previous novel, K: The Art of Love, with a novel of heightened political and sexual -tension set around the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River. The largest construction project in the history of China, the dam opens in June 2004. Its controversial -reservoir will cut the famous Gorge to one third of its height and submerge the whole area, the cradle of Chinese civilization for three millennia.
When Beijing scientist Liu goes to visit her husband, the director of the dam project, she discovers he is being unfaithful and flees to her hometown. Taking refuge with her Auntie Chen, Liu is told by Chen how her mother gave birth to her in the midst of political turmoil and how both mother and daughter nearly died for lack of help. Chen's own son, Yueming, was born at the same time as Liu and is now a painter and key figure in a local cult bent on sabotaging the dam's construction. Finding themselves drawn together, Liu and Yueming realize they are a reincarnation of the prostitute Red Lotus and a Buddhist priest, whose affair led to their vilification and whose naked crucifixion is described in graphic sexual detail. With the souls of Red Lotus and the priest cementing the couple's attachment, Liu's decision to join Yueming in protesting against the dam means she must ultimately face imprisonment.
Peacock Cries boldly tackles the subjects of rein-carnation and spiritual quest in the face of economic development.
Hong Ying was born in Chingqing in 1962 into a sailor's family. She was the sixth child in a family of eight and endured great poverty and hunger as a child during the Great Famine and the Cultural Revolution.

A Good Story Ruined by Simply Dreadful Translation.......2005-08-10
Hong Ying's most recent novel, PEACOCK CRIES AT THE THREE GORGES, centers around Liu, a successful bioengineering researcher in Beijing who returns to her home county of Liang where her husband, Li, is the project manager for the infamous Three Gorges Dam. Counterposed against their highly educated professional lives are those of the townspeople, undereducated and barely surviving the vicissitudes of life and the complications of resettlement due to the expected rise in the water level of the Yangtze River when the dam is finished. Liu meets her mother's former best friend, Auntie Chen, and Chen's son, Yueming, who was born almost simultaneously with Liu herself. Over the course of just a few days, Liu learns the truth about her family heritage and how she benefited from her father's ruthless political opportunism. She learns as well how similar her husband Li is to her father, and she resolves her own dissatisfactions with life in a swirl of Buddhist mysticism and reincarnation that contrast sharply with her scientific training and her husband's ultrarational engineering background.
PEACOCK CRIES may well be a masterly work in Chinese. Regretably, the translation provided for Marion Boyars by Mark Smith and Henry Zhao, and the associated editing, fail at a simply astonishing level of ineptitude. These two individuals have managed single-handedly to reduce Ms. Hong's writing to wordy and badly written prose that suffers by comparison to the contents of most high school literary annuals. Having previously read Ms. Hong's SUMMER OF BETRAYAL and DAUGHTER OF THE RIVER, I feel confident the problem lies elsewhere than with the author. Everyone involved in publishing this dreadful English edition owes Ms. Hong a profound apology, after which ritual hari-kari might be an appropriate penitence for such a shameful performance.
Lest these criticisms seem exaggerated, consider the following few excerpts and examples from among the hundreds I could have chosen (CAPS mine):
-- On one side [of the main street] was a large and well-designed new park THAT WAS full of greenery. One [sic] the other side was A SERIES OF TALL, SHINY buildings...
-- She...found the humidity OF THE AIR...particularly soporific.
-- ...she'd been working in the fields since childhood SO SHE HAD GROWN UP TO BE VERY STRONG.
-- It had suddenly begun to POUR WITH RAIN...
-- IT WAS AS THOUGH IT WERE pouring out of a tap.
-- Maybe he was being so cautious BECAUSE HE WAS SO ANXIOUS BY THE FACT THAT Liu was from Beijing.
-- ...there was a quick PITTER-PATTER SOUND continually BATTERING against the glass OF THE WINDOW. [Pitter-patters batter a window?]
-- ...she felt an impulse to LOOK round....but no one was LOOKING in her direction. They...LOOKED like businessmen...impressive-LOOKING people....She felt very unremarkable-LOOKING...she didn't know how to make herself LOOK as good as they did. [all in just one paragraph!]
Beyond the horrifyingly weak prose lies an equally appalling deficiency in editing. Again, consider a few examples:
-- They...looked like businessmen or technical ENGINEER...
-- ...she couldn't BARE anything with a pattern on it.
-- There was LIGHTENING and heavy thunder...
-- ...ten different parts of his body had been wounded, but HAD never had the wound been very serious...
-- As it turned IT out it was lucky...
-- Early the next day...she was AWOKEN by a terrible din...
-- He...stroked her head gently, so different from the COURSE gruff old veteran she was used to.
-- ...HALF WAY up the mountain.
-- ...a small hole was cut in chest of each bear...
-- ...he would never LOOSE his temper...
-- ...penury forced her become a courtesan.
-- ...beyond the Hall of SHAKYAMUNI... [should be Sakyamuni]
-- She walked TOWARDS the bed...
Strunk & White's THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE is clearly not enough here. Better that Messrs. Smith and Zhao should just stop doing translations altogether.
Despite the audaciously poor rendition of Hong Ying's work by Messrs. Smith and Zhao, the strength of her writing still manages to break through. Her characters are memorable and her storytelling is graphic, at times gripping or sympathetic, occasionally humorous (as when Liu meets a Hong Kong businessman who is prepared to invest $200 million with her if she can help him clone rhinoceroses for the aphrodisiac properties of their horns). Readers interested in today's China and the bitter fruits of modernity resulting from massive infrastructure projects imposed on the lives of helpless peasants will be as fascinated by the story in PEACOCK CRIES AT THE THREE GORGES as they will be appalled by the poor quality of the translation. Four stars to the author, zero to her hapless translators.

Book Description
This Author’s Preferred Edition of Raymond E. Feist’s bestselling coming-of-age saga celebrates the fifteenth anniversary of its publication. Feist introduces a new generation of readers to his riveting novel of adventure and intrigue, revised and updated as he always meant it to be written. It is a work that explores strength and weakness, hope and fear, and what it means to be a man—in a kingdom where peace is the most precious commodity of all.
If there were two more impetuous and carefree men in the Kingdom of the Isles, they had yet to be found. Twins Borric and Erland wore that mantle proudly, much to the chagrin of their father, Prince Arutha of Krondor. But their blissful youth has come to an end. Their uncle, the King, has produced no male children. Bypassing himself, Arutha names Borric, the eldest twin by seconds, the Royal Heir. As his brother, Erland will have his own great responsibilities to shoulder. To drive home their future roles, Arutha sends them as ambassadors to Kesh, the most feared nation in the world. Borric and Erland will be presented to the Queen of Kesh—the single most powerful ruler in the known world—at her Seventy-fifth Jubilee Anniversary.
But they have not even left Krondor when an assassination attempt on Borric is thwarted. Aware that he is being provoked into war, Arutha does not rise to the bait. His sons’ journey will not be deterred, for nothing less than peace is riding on it. Yet there is to be no peace for the young princes. When their traveling party is ambushed, Borric disappears and is presumed dead—sending Erland into spirals of rage and grief as he is forced to navigate alone the court intrigues at Kesh. But unbeknownst to anyone, Borric lives and has escaped his captors. In a strange land, with a price on his head, Borric must use all his wits and stamina to find his way back to his brother.
On separate paths, the two men—one a fugitive and one a future king—make their journey toward maturity, honor, and duty. For every step they take could sway the fragile peace of the land, as those who crave war rally against them—and become ever more daring.

Diplomatic intrigue at its best.......2007-08-25
With this Midkemia novel, Feist brings us 20 years after "A Darkness At Sethanon". Arutha conDoin's twin sons, Borric and Erland are thrust into the limelight. Arutha is the Kingdom of the Isle's Prince of Krondor, second in line to his older brother Lyam who holds the throne in Rillanon. At the realization that Lyam has no sons and his aging wife will bear no more children, Arutha's sons will one day assume the throne...Borric, the first born will be king, Erland will be heir to the throne.
No sooner has this been determined, than someone attempts to assassinate one of the boys, shortly after Arutha has promised they would attend the neighbouring Empire of Kesh's birthday celebration for its Empress. On the journey to Kesh, the Princes, along with James (once Jimmy The Hand) and Locklear), make a short stop at Stardock where we get to see Pug, the powerful mage of the Riftwar saga, again. James falls in love with Pug's adopted daughter, Gamina, and marries her (rather far-fetched in my eyes, but that's the only thing I'll criticize Feist for on this novel), and they set off for Kesh once more, now with Gamina also. Just after crossing the border, the party is attacked by raiders, and Borric is kidnapped.
So we find Borric dragged to the slavers city of Durbin, a notorious hole for pirates, while Erland continues on to Kesh, weighed down with the presumption that his older brother is dead, and that he stands now in line for the thrown. The stakes are high as those around Erland suspect that a greater plot is afoot, and someone may attempt to take Erland's life too, thus causing war between the Kingdom and Kesh. From different places, and vastly different views of this foreign land, the brothers try to work out who wants them dead, who wants to cause a war...and how to stop it.
With each novel, Feist introduces us to new places, and this time Kesh comes under the microscope. He does well at creating a vastly different place from the Kingdom, giving the reader a vivid picture of the incredible size of Kesh, the varied people that live there, and the vastly different culture and society. If the Tsurani of Kelwan felt asian to the reader, the Keshian empire and its people are middle eastern.
Feist does well on the characters - his usual forte - and deftly immerses the reader in a gripping rendition of what diplomacy, murder and intrigue would have been like in a medeival atmosphere.
Finally, if you read this book for no other reason, this book introduces us to Nakor the Blue Rider - arguably the funniest, oddest, and most intriguing of Feist's characters - a powerful magician of great modesty, who I have long suspected of being the avatar of a deity in Feist's worlds.
I highly recommend this book.
Love It.......2007-06-27
Exciting books. I have not reread this one yet, but I remember it from about 5 years ago. RF is a great writer. If you like a good story that keeps you turning the page, choose him.
Surprisingly Entertaining.......2006-07-14
Many times when an author continues a story and 'drops' out characters that they start with - the books are not as interesting, as if losig the original charaters destroyed the author's ability to pen a good tale, but not so with Feist.
Many years have past since the last book - and this book is introducing the reader to Arutha's twin sons - and all the antics they provide. But this is not just a fun loving book about thier antics... They are needed to do more important things for there father - and thier Uncle, the King.
Even the new sub characters are wonderfully fleshed out - and , I know I was, wishing for Feist to continue with them all as he progresses in the next book.
The political intrige and 'whodunit' feel in this book is great - and never once was I bored while reading it.. and never felt a point that I needed to push myself to the next point ... it took me there itself.
I certainly recommend it, but must point out that anyone starting out on Feist should make sure and look to Magician:Apprentice
Action and intrigue in a fantasy setting.......2006-04-24
Overall, quite an enjoyable read filled with likeable characters that develop over time. Marred by the offscreen death of a major character that struck me as gratuitous and senseless. Of course death can be senseless, but we don't read to be reminded of such banality.
Spaghetti Western with a fantasy backdrop.......2006-02-26
I have been a big Raymond Fiest fan, but I started a little backwards with the Serpent War Saga. I have since gone back through his other books all set within the same basic universe. Mr. Fiest has a wonderful ability to create rich characters and a intriguing environment and this book is no exception. The story tells of the two sons of the Prince of Krondor and their "punishment" and coming of age. Although this book is not as good as some of his other works, it is a worth while read. There is always a sense of fun and adventure is these books and this is another of the series. However, as you read more and more of his books, you start noticing the reoccuring emergence of character traits, but in the end it is just a great fantasy "spaghetti western".
In the end, this is a ripping yarn (as quoted by Raymond is the foreword for Magician: Apprentice) but this just isn't as ripping as the others.

Good to see Art Adams Art.......2006-11-12
Overall this book is enjoyable if you are a Tom Strong fan. The 'Terrific Tales' venue allows for different stories than in the regular title, so these stories do a have different flavor to them. Personally, I purchased this book for the Jonni Future stories because of the Art Adams art and the silly pulp feel to them.
Tom, Tom and Jonni in a Racier Title.......2006-01-29
This book collects the first six issues of the title comic. Each issue has stories about Tom Strong (and supporting cast), Young Tom Strong (while he is still a boy), and the time traveling hero Jonni Future (heir to the mantle of Johnny Future).
These stories are racier and more risque that those usually found in the Tom Strong books. For instance, in one story, Tesla Strong sneaks out to party and have sex with an alien. Jonni Future is always in situations that include very buxom women (including herself) and various states of undress.
Overall I found the stories to be entertaining and especially like the classic pulp feel of the Jonni Future stories. Clean art is used in most of the stories and you will probably recognize the work of some of the guest artists. But while humor and action are prevalent readers should be aware of the more adult nature of these stories.

ASIN: 0847820068
Release Date: 1997-10-15 |
Book Description
Throughout the history of the cigar, the habano has been unequivocally considerd the pinnacle of smoking pleasure. This unparalleled quality of the Havana cigar has bound the idea of Cuba with its most coveted export, and has held the imaginations of aficionados around the world for 500 years.
By way of explaining the enduring phenomenon known as the habano, author and photographer Nancy Stout journeys deep into the history and culture of a nation, beginning in the beautiful and often enigmatic capital of Havana, then striking out to one of the great plantations of the Vuelta Abajo, where the tobacco's delicate leaves grow under protective canopies, and to an agricultural collective in the Vuelta Arriba, where tobaco del sol thrives under Cuba's brilliant sun. Along the way she introduces us to the doctrinaire jefe of the Antonio Briones Montoto collective farm; a master grower whose family has been cultivating tobacco for more than 150 years; and a legendary cigar roller who gives a transfixing lesson in the art of rolling the perfect cigar.
The pursuit of the story of the Havana cigar extends into time as well as space. Included is a thorough history of Cuban tobacco cultivation, beginning with Columbus's first voyage to the West Indies and chronicling Cuba's legacy of exploration, conquest, and struggle for economic and political indepedence.
Habanos: The Story of the Havana Cigar is the ideal guide to that most potent symbol of luxury, disciplined craft, and, indeed, of Cuba itself.

Outstanding.......2004-02-06
For a habanophile such as myself this has to be the best book that I have read to date on Cuba and Cuban Cigars. This book not only describes the habano from seed to cigar but explores the history of the cigar and it's relationship with Cuba from Columbus to the old factories. If you want more than just the typical seed, plant, harvest, cure, roll em books on Cuban cigars this is the one for you.
Great Photography well Researched.......1999-06-01
Wonderful illustrations combined with interestiong text make this more than a coffee table book. For Smokers of Habanos and those curious to learn more behind the cuban cigar this is an excellent book.
If you wanted to be there........without being there!.......1999-02-08
I thought of this book, as a trip without leaving home. I was at the vegas,,the people homes, the factories and, even the streets of Habana.I really enjoyed the way the author Nancy Stout, put together the history (from start to finish)of one of Cuba's most treasured and coveted commodity-La Habana "puros". When it comes to it's people and their beloved cigars,it defines recognition both in art and history! I give the book a 4-thumbs up!!!!! A must read for a "habanaphile" such as myself. To be read with the accompany of a sweet aromatic habano burning, and perhaps also, with your favorite spirit.Truly a book to be enjoyed over and over again!

Great baby patterns!.......2006-07-18
There are some really unique and cute baby patterns in this book, especially the blankets. Each project includes a blanket, hat and booties that coordinate, which is nice. Most patterns are pretty easy, and the instuctions are very easy to follow. The only downside for me, is that about 1/2 the patterns are crochet, and I don't know how to crochet. But the knitting patterns are so cute that I still would buy the book.
Excellent baby patterns!.......2006-03-23
I have several pattern books for knitting and crocheting baby items and this is now my newest favorite! The baby sock pattern alone is worth buying the book--the socks were easy to make (and I am NOT a sock knitter!) and they actually fit a newborn. I have not made all the items in the book yet but the things I have made were easy and fun. And I love the fact that it has both knitting and crochet patterns--I think more and more people are beginning to do both and it's nice to have a book that offers both.

A Good Introduction to the "Black Hat" Style of Feng Shui.......2006-09-22
Feng shui (which means "wind-water" in Chinese) is the art of placement. It concerns not only the placement of furniture, but also the arrangement of the environment as a whole (where land forms are, houses, towns, and so forth). The purpose of feng shui is to maximize the potential of the space within your environment, through lighting, color, types of objects, and a variety of other factors. The two major types of feng shui are the Black Hat style and Compass style. You're probably more familiar with the Compass style, which generally requires a feng shui consultation and someone using a traditional Chinese compass to determine factors in feng shui. However, the Black Hat style (which is what this book focuses on) is much more accessible for people who are not feng shui practitioners!
Feng shui is about how "chi" moves throughout the environment. The philosophy is that chi is everywhere and that feng shui helps chi become as balanced as possible; problems result when chi becomes too positive or too negative. Chi is the energy or "life force" moving through all things and it is Yin (dark/feminine) and yang (light/masculine) are the two types of chi. Together, yin and yang form Tao. From yin and yang, eight "trigrams" are derived; these are the stacked lines, which are the same as are used in the I Ching for divination. In the Black Hat style of feng shui, they correspond to different sections of a room. Yang's trigrams are Heaven (Helpful People/Travel), Lake (Creativity/Children), Fire (Fame/Reputation), and Thunder (Family/Health). Yin's trigrams are Wind (Wealth), Water (Career), Mountain (Knowledge), and Earth (Relationships/Romance). These eight are referred to as the Ba Gua. The grid used in the book shows the locations of these sections, which could be applied to any room in your house.
The book goes on to explain the steps of using feng shui for your room, beginning with removing clutter and then focusing on the specific sections of the room. Important objects (such as beds, computers, TVs, and stereos) are given special consideration for placement. Not only does each section that follow focus on the particular section of the Ba Gua and what to put in it, but also discusses the topic involved. For example, not only is the Mountain/Knowledge section described a favorable place for reading, meditation, placing bookcases, religious/divinatory materials, and objects related to hobbies, but the book goes on to explain the importance of mediation, keeping a journal, and understanding more about yourself.
After the Ba Gua is covered, the relationship of the five elements (Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood) is discussed. Each element corresponds to a different color, shape, and material in feng shui. In Chinese astrology, your birth year determines your zodiac animal as well as your element (lists of years for both are given in this book). The only problem that I have with this section is that it incorrectly lists the yin/yang polarity of the elements; Teen Feng Shui states: Fire/Yang, Earth/Yin, Metal/Yin, Water/Yin, and Wood/Yang. From what I have learned in the past about Chinese astrology is that Fire is Yang, Earth is both Yin and Yang, Metal is Yang, Water is Yin, and Wood is Yin. This latter arrangement makes a lot more sense to me, being that it leaves you with two entirely Yang elements, two entirely Yin elements, and one balanced element. It is rather important to consider that Earth is the element that is supposed to represent the duality of the Tao; Yin and Yang. Aside from this discrepancy, I haven't noticed any other problems. A section on Chinese zodiac animals follows, with personality descriptions for each of the 12 signs.
Though this book is geared towards teenagers, it is a fine introduction for someone of any age interested in feng shui. It explains everything clearly and has plenty of exercises for determining what you think about your room, house, and areas of your life in general.

Great book! Unlike a ton of feng shui books, this one you can actually read and understand. Very good, for teens and adults. Very thorough explanations.
A Breath of Fresh Air!.......2003-04-19
I've read dozens of books on feng shui, but this was the clearest, easiest to follow, and most heartfelt of them all. You don't have to be a teen to appreciate the wisdom and guidance contained within these pages. The depth of the author's knowledge of her subject is evident throughout. I was especially intrigued by the chapter that integrates Chinese astrology with feng shui applications. Everyone should read this new approach, regardless of age. Highly recommended!

Great book for young experimenters.......1999-10-07
The book is great for young experimenters. Easy to follow instructions and clever writing get kids into the 'science is fun' mindset. The 'Food for thought' section that accompanies each activity explains the science behind the activity clearly and with the right amount of detail for the intended audience. (Tested on my 10-year-old son). Each activity concludes with a 'More to chew on' section that enables kids to relate what they've observed to other examples of the same principle. Many of the activities focusing on static electricity, air pressure and buoyancy could be used for elementary school science fair projects. There is an awesome demonstration of center of gravity. Other activities deal with sense of touch, taste and smell. There are a couple of activities exploring optics. The scientific method and related concepts are introduced. The illustrations are extremely helpful in diagramming the text. Older kids (and adults) will enjoy the reading for the subtle titles like 'Stop Making Cents' and 'A Salt and Gravity'.

Book Description
This is the third book in successful series of occasional sketches by the grandfather of American alternative comix. These sketches reveal another side-- a contemplative side-- to the controversial artist, renowned for his taboo-breaking satires of American society. With his intricate cross-hatching and observant line, the drawings here show Crumb as an imaginative chronicler of everyday life.

"You Deserve a Break Today".......2003-03-25
OK, I'm a Crumb fan. We ain't all, but many of us are, and I'm one of the many. Waiting For Food 3 is a beautiful collection of doodles and sketches by R. Crumb while... well, while waiting for food. This book is a collection of his restaurant placemat drawings. As R. proudly says in his intro dated July 2002, "I'm no longer simply doodling to pass the time 'til the food arrives. I'm EARNING MONEY while waiting to be served!" Good, he's having fun... he deserved it. This guy (almost) single handedly started the underground comic craze of the 60's and 70's. He started Zap Comix, writing and drawing the first two issues completely by himself. Check out crumbmuseum.com for a tribute to the Master, Robert (R) Crumb.
