4 out of 5 stars Is that a GIANT SLUG in your pocket...?.......2002-03-18

Great, traditional Doctor Who monster story. Genetic mutations are occurring within the population of Baktan and the Doctor has found out the cause (see front cover pic - arrrggghh!!!) You'll find the Doctor beaten up a lot more than usual, Compassion is changing slightly, and Fitz, well, it's revolutionary and girl trouble again for him. Baxendale has a great way in describing his planetary landscape, especially conveying the increasing need and survival the people of the desert city Baktan for water. Nice short chapters urge the story on, so it makes it hard to put the book down. RECOMMENDED to all!!!

3 out of 5 stars Flawed, but faintly enjoyable.......2001-09-25

Somehow I enjoyed Trevor Baxendale's COLDHEART and I'm not entirely sure why that happened. As I was reading it, I was mentally groaning at the weakness of the plot, the poor characterization and the obviously hasty rewrites to take the New Compassion into consideration. Yet I kept turning the pages, interested in what was going to happen next. It was derivative and unoriginal at every turn, and still it held my attention for the full two hundred and seventy-seven pages, which is quite a feat bearing in mind how thin the story is stretched.

The book has an annoying tendency to end virtually every chapter on a cliffhanger, and given that there are thirty chapters in the book, it means that the characters can't go for more than about ten pages or so without being shot at or grabbed by monsters. This really puts quite a bit of unneeded padding into the story, though it might have been this quick pace that made the book as entertaining as it is. Even though none of the sudden escapes, macho dialogue or improbable turnarounds ends up making any difference in the big picture, it does distract from the flimsiness of plot by slowing down the speed at which it is revealed.

This was such a visual book, that it's hard not to picture this as a novelisation of a television story that we never got to see. While this does result in some breathtaking visuals, it also provides too many awkward moments. Main portions of the plot are revealed by having two people explaining things to each other that they must surely already know. This sort of exposition is allowable in television or film, but it just seems silly to do this in a novel. In addition, there are far too many fight scenes that just don't work in written form. Between these and the numerous unnecessary descriptions of decaying, mutating flesh and mucus (it's not horror, it's just gross), I could have been happy with a book that had about fifty to a hundred less pages.

I can't really say too much about why I enjoyed this. I was not blind to its many flaws, yet despite them I was entertained by the overall story. It isn't especially thrilling or exciting, but it is an enjoyable, if terribly light, read. Just don't think about too much about the plot or the relationship that Fitz has with a camel. Both will make your head spin.

3 out of 5 stars A New Author for the Eighth Doctor.......2001-07-09

Trevor Baxendale does a decent job of writing for the Eighth Doctor. He manages to come up with an interesting Plot line, as well as using Fitz and Compassion in a decent manner. The only thing that I would say is that it would be best to read some of the other books, especially Paul Cornell's The Shadows of Avalon, to understand some of the things that are going on in this book. Overall, a well done book, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

4 out of 5 stars Very traditional, in almost every respect.......2000-07-17

I found Coldheart to be a relatively good read. It's extremely trad (traditional), which is a good thing, when you see it's surrounded by the continuity-messing blockbusters like Interference and The Ancestor Cell.

I felt that Coldheart was like a rest from the mounting tension with the events of Shadows of Avalon leading to Ancestor Cell (I won't spoil it). Fitz is an excellent character in this novel, and is decidedly Doctorish throughout. Compassion is cold and obtrusive, and is my utter favorite EDA character apart from Fitz. The Doctor is spot-on. The Slimers are the villans (well, apart from the other one) of the piece, but aren't painted as such. They are just despised by the Eskoni, and want to be the same as everyone else.

So I'd recommend this to those readers who want to take a break from the arc which is slowly building. Remember, a change is as good as a rest.

2 out of 5 stars The BBC Falls Flat Again.......2000-05-28

Coldheart is the worst Doctor Who novel in about a year. The pace is extremely slow. Fitz is back to being an immature, sarcastic imbecile. I thought Mr. Baxendale's previous Doctor Who novel, The Janus Conjunction, was much better. What made the editors at BBC choose this book?

5 out of 5 stars Very well written.......2007-07-31

Jess Lebow has written works for the card game of Magic and telling the story of that domain, but in 'Master of Chains' he is diving into the Forgotten Realms, and may I say that he did a WONDERFUL job.

The first question I would give anyone that was about 150 pages into the book would be, want to stop reading? And I say this because the answer and I would give would be NO, this book is amazingly difficult to put down once I started it, and the Characters although, not really shown in detail about themselves, are very enticing.

The plot of the story is great, and is straight foward with non stop action and lives up to the name of the series being Fighters. I would also like to add that if a person came up to me and asked me if i would recommend this novel for a Forgotten Realms casual reader, I would definetly say yes. Although I will admit that the story at the end of the novel felt as if not enough action happened in the end and I just felt that the ending was less then dramatic, but this may not have been at Jess Lebow's fault, maybe his editors, but regardless this novel is great. Have fun reading it if you pick it up!

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-01-29

"Master of Chains" is a story of love, betrayal and conflicting loyalties.

This novel deals with emotions much more than other FR titles. It might make it slow at times, but I liked the change. The plot is strong and interesting. It hasn't got a lot of twists in it but it isn't boring or predictable at all. The battle scenes are OK, although the book itself is a bit too battle-heavy in my opinion. At least there aren't any random and unnecessary battles in the novel, as there often are in FR books. And I have to mention the ending. It is hard to comment on it without giving away any spoilers, but I will say it is different from cheesy endings you come to expect from Wizards and their books. I liked it a lot.

On the downside, the characters and especially the villains are crude and uninteresting. This is a book with lot of introspective, but I failed to see any distinguishable characteristics on any of the protagonists. The villains, on the other hand, are terrible. It is true they haven't been given a lot of space in this book, but you really got to have more interesting villains. I see some people complaining about pulpy romance in this book, but there isn't a lot of it in the book, and it isn't particularly pulpy.

All in all, a slightly different FR novel with a strong plot and weak characters. Yeah, and a great ending. A good read.

1 out of 5 stars Great title... not so great book.......2007-01-10

Great title! Fantastic cover! If only the actual story had lived up to the hype. I love the Realms, amd a huge fan of Paul Kemp, R.A. Salvatore and a handful of other authors who breathe life into this world. I honestly went into this title anticipating great things... which NEVER happened. I did finish it, if for no other reason than I knew with a premise that cool it had to get better. It never did.

Do yourself a huge favor and pass on this one. Mr. Kemp or Mr. Salvatore should have a new book out soon...

2 out of 5 stars You do plan to have Chain Masters on your Chain Master Tour?.......2007-01-02

You gotta love a book called "Master of Chains" which deprives you of anything even remotely resembling a Master of Chains until the last 50 pages of text. Oh wait... no you don't. Lebow destroys the nice tapestries he managed to weave with decent dramatic prose by tripping through the worst action writing I've ever seen.

As with most of the D&D novels: the editor assigned to this book is completely incompetent and has no business working in professional publishing.

3 out of 5 stars things that should never happen in Forgotten Realms.......2006-08-01

~In case you pick up this book over the much superior Ghostwalker, SPOILERS follow~

Forgotten Realms, or any fantasy setting purporting to be above pulp should not have 'sex' scenes that are too cheesy even for Harlequin Romance (If you're going to attempt a sex scene, at least try to keep it within believability).
I might have been willing to forgive one awkward sex scene but Lebow decided to have parallel cheesy sex scenes using language like 'she slipped her tunic off and he caught his breath', and 'he knew it was wrong but he couldn't resist.'

To the young readers who enjoyed this book, you owe it to yourself to try "Ghostwalker" (also in The Fighters series), and "Mistress of the Night" from The Priests series.

5 out of 5 stars The Problem With Intelligence.......2007-10-09

Brain Wave (1954) is a standalone SF novel. It takes place in the era shortly after World War II.

In this novel, Archie Brooks is a retarded man who works on the Rossman farm. One day, he is out pulling stumps in the northwest forty and thinks idly about various things. He begins to notice that he is thinking differently. Some of his new thoughts frighten him.

Peter Corinth is a senior scientist at the Rossman Institute. He notices that his thinking is unusually clear this day, but is more concerned with the new approach that he has conceived in his sleep. Maybe the old subconscious has come through once again.

On his way to work, Peter notices that others seem to be thinking more clearly. His two assistants have come up with the same basic idea for the new project. Even the elevator operator has new ideas.

Shiela Corinth is Peter's wife. She too is having new thoughts. Rather than her usual detective story, she starts to read Conrad's Lord Jim and loses track of the time.

Nat Lewis has noticed a small but significant shift in the speed of neuron transmission and recovery among his specimens. When he brings up the differences during lunch, Peter mentions his own observations. Then Peter has an inspiration and the two of them start calling specialists in certain fields. They discover that some basic physical constants have changed throughout the Solar System and conclude that Terra has just exited from a field that, among other things, retards mental functions.

Anything with a brain has just become smarter and the change is increasing exponentially. Animals are escaping from traps and horses are refusing to plow the fields. Some of the dangerous animals are even more so and the pigs are revolting.

In this story, mankind builds new devices to reach for the stars and to take over the more menial jobs. Less intelligent persons become more capable of performing ordinary functions, releasing more intelligent people to work on more important projects. Still, higher intelligence doesn't change basic personality patterns.

The criminal class has become more capable of committing crimes, but their new competency is offset by the greater capabilities of the police forces. Dictators find new ways to dominate their peons, but those peons discover new reasons and ways to revolt against their masters. Humans are changing, but the transition period is going to be very interesting.

This story addresses some of the new capabilities of Homo Sapiens Sapiens, but also follows the expanding consciousness of those with lesser intelligence as they reach normal levels. Archie Brooks is one example of such mental expansion. And then there are the animals.

This tale is one of the earliest of the author's SF novels. He had been writing SF (and fantasy) stories for over a decade, but paper shortages and other impediments severely limited publication of novel length works prior to the early fifties. This was one of the first of the new works.

The biggest problem was the shortage of publishers for SF novels, but several new SF/Fantasy publishing houses were started in the early fifties. Most of these new publishers only issued hardback books. Older publishing houses also started to reprint SF/Fantasy magazine serials, but distribution problems plagued paperbacks until the mid 1950s.

Highly recommended for Anderson fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of expanding consciousness, social problems, and romantic entanglements.

-Arthur W. Jordin

4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-04

Brain Wave describes what happens when an astromonical phenomenon passes Earth, and elevates the intelligence of a sizable proportion of the planet's population.

This causes plenty of changes, as super geniuses have to keep busy and keep from getting bored, somehow.

4 out of 5 stars A pretty good book from one of the stars of the Campbellian Golden Age of SF.......2007-04-29

The title on the cover of the paperback is, "Brainwave / His Enduring Masterpiece". The title that appears at the top of the Amazon listing is, "Brainwave: The Greatest Masterpiece by the Science Fiction Grandmaster". I have real problems with both versions. I am fairly sure that Anderson would be dismayed to find that "Brain Wave" actually was regarded as his enduring masterpiece, let alone his greatest.

Poul Anderson was distinguished in two ways from his peers among John W. Campbell's hand-picked corps of science fiction luminaries. Of them all, he was the most likely to work out all the permutations and ramifications arising from any initial premise. Among other things, that led to entertaining and informative essays on such things as how to construct an alien world for literary purposes and how not to write heroic fantasies ("On Thud and Blunder".) The other way in which he differed from Asimov, De Camp, Van Vogt and Heinlein was his inclination toward the downbeat. There are precious few heroic triumphs in the collected works of Poul Anderson and even less true joy.

As an author, I don't think he had much of a sense of humor. That may be why the earlier tales of the Hokas, the ones contained in "Earthman's Burden," are so wildly hilarious. Given the premise--which I'd be willing to bet originated with his collaborator, Randall Garrett--Anderson worked out exactly what would happen when space-faring humans smacked into a race of intelligent, infinitely suggestible, role-playing teddy bears. The first stories were wonderful. The later entries in the series were simply variants on the early ones and burdened with an increasing sub-text of Andersonian gloom.

"Brain Wave" is a classic type of Anderson book. In the beginning is the premise: over a period of a few months every thinking mind on earth becomes more intelligent by an unspecified but quite large factor. A rabbit calmly sits down and reasons out how to escape from a trap. A man born with subnormal intelligence begins functioning in the high-normal range. A woman rejects the burden of super-genius. Transcendent humans exploring the universe accidently find themselves deprived of their new-found transcendence and become helpless before their own meant-to-be self-explanatory technologies. And so on, through all the permutations and ramifications.

The point of the book is the working out of the consequences of the initial, quite arbitrary and wholly unexplained premise. Well-developed characterizations and memorable uses of language are irrelevant to such a point and in such a book; you will find neither here. What you will find is Poul Anderson manipulating his human puppets by use of competent, if not especially memorable prose along a series of very, very cleverly thought-out paths to a satisfactory and self-consistent ending.

Worse books than this have been cited as mid-Twentieth Century science fiction classics. It's well worth reading, but "Brain Wave" is neither Poul Anderson's "enduring" nor his "greatest" masterpiece.

Four suddenly much brighter stars.

4 out of 5 stars Vintage Poul! .......2007-02-14

On a whim I was digging through a libraries box of books for sale and found "Brainwave" in a late 50's hardback collection of science fiction novels.
I just finished reading it and I still have a smile on my face. Truly vintage Anderson. No, he's no eloquent wordsmith but that's not why you read him - it's his ideas you read him for, fascinating! What an amazing mind he had...and this was a chance to walk with him through it once again for me. It reminded me of reading Clarke's "Childhood's End" the first time, I put it down and thought for a while and looked at things differently for days. There's the love- ideas, concepts and realities that make you THINK.
The plot is given by others, so I won't go into it but a look at the potential of man going beyond his bounds that I'd not imagined. This is more of the serious vein of "Boat of a 1,000 Years" than his more fun writings like Time Patrol. Friends and I have noted that his books have a tendency to climax, then you look and there's still a third of the book to read :) Well, this one only does it a chapter or two ahead. That's my only criticism, a well recommended read for those who enjoy reading beyond a star trek quickvella.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful piece of classic science fiction.......2007-01-03

A book based on an intriguing idea: we have been moving through a region of space where a field damped neural speed. When we move out of that field, human IQ sky-rockets. Animals also become much smarter. Horses refuse to work, pigs plot clever escapes, chimps learn simple speech.

Written in 1954, it long predates Vernor Vinge's ideas of the different regions of space: the Slow Zone, the Beyond, the Transcend. It is slightly later than Arthur C Clarke's Childhood's End, which has some of the same themes, although I think Poul Anderson pulls off the transition much more convincingly.

In general the transition from normality to beyond-genius is intriguing, but it is hard for Anderson to convince us of the consequences. For example, I tend to doubt that many people would immediately refuse to perform mundane jobs, thus crashing the economy.

The beginning pages of the book are definitely the best, where the world wakes up to find itself curiously smarter as the transformation process begins.

The fundamental weakness of this book is that the probabilities of his code matrices are not given, so there is no way of knowing if the codes are random. All of the codes in this book use single words or numbers. Skeptics such as Brendan McKay have shown that simple codes can occur in any book of this length. Some codes that I believe are genuine form sentences and the probabilities are beyond chance. A good site for those interested in code research is biblecodedigest.com

5 out of 5 stars Future Prospects of the World According to the Bible Code.......2005-10-03

This is an extrodinary book, a must read for anyone with an open mind and not bound by the dogma of the church or fundamentalist preachers. I've studied this subject extensively and feel Joseph Noah must be a very advanced human spirit to have so adeptly understood the Bible Code and what it means.
As for those who reject what this author has to say because he offers that Jesus Christ was NOT God, re-read your Bible. Christ said do not worship me, do not pray to me.....I bring you God's Word, His message.....pray to God, our Father, not me. Jesus Christ also said do not make a church in my name.....He knew man would corrupt His message and re-write it to their own selfish aims. Jesus Christ said He was the Son of God, the Son of Man, not God Himself. Too bad so many are led to believe the corrupted word of a Bible that has been changed to suit the church leaders, ie: reincarnation is not valid, that through Grace alone we are forgiven and will go to heaven, that Christ was God, and that we cannot raise ourselves to the heights of perfection with God's help and guidance.... as Jesus Christ did. True, Jesus Christ is the pinnacle of perfection, and we cannot even conceive of His greatness, but He did come to be an example to us all and to show us the way back to God Almighty through repeated chances to learn our lessons via reincarnation. God created a just and perfect set of Universal Laws. Primary is the law of cause and effect (karma) and in this perfect system no one can get a free ride from their 'sins', they can only learn and atone for them through experiencing themselves the hurt and pain they have caused others. Christ came and died for our sins yes, but He only took them and held them in 'abeyance' for a period of time so we would have a chance to move forward in our progress. He knew otherwise we would have been 'buried' in our sins and not able to make any progress, such was the horrible human condition during Christ's time here. By taking on our sins on the Cross, Christ has held off what would have been the natural outcome of our sins, delaying those effects until now...the end times, the tribulation. And now today all of our past deeds need to be released to satisfy God's perfect Law of cause and effect... we are now reaping what we have sown in these days and for the next several years. It'll be rough having to deal with our accumulated bad karma through the Universal Law of Cause and Effect, that has now been released, but some of us will make the best of it and make great strides in our progress by handling it in the correct manner and making the right choices. The Laws God created are perfect, so the Law of Cause and Effect is perfect too and this is why in His mercy, God sent Christ down to us to help us out and give us one last chance by holding the results of our misdeeds off for 2,000 years so we could move forward the best we could until it is now time for it all to be released and for us to make our choices of what we will do with it all. The vast majority of church leaders today are only interested in holding their flocks under their control, massaging their gigantic egos and keep vital information from us that helps us grow closer to God,...don't be one of these 'brainwashed' folks, be true to what your God given spirit is trying to tell you, you all have innate intuition you can use to be very discerning in what you use to your own benefit....don't be led around by others that say they have the 'inside scoop' on how to get to heaven.....it's only through hard work, discernment and true love of all of God's Universal Laws... which say learn your lessons well, truly love your fellow human beings here, move forward and work towards perfection while here in 'schoolhouse earth'. You have it within you to make it.....do it with God's help and Christ as your example.

1 out of 5 stars There is no "Bible code".......2005-05-21

One of the foundational qualities of the Bible is its clarity (sometimes called perspicuity). That means Scripture's main teachings are plain enough to be understood without the need of special expertise or church-sanctioned interpretations.

The Bible frequently speaks about its own clarity. Psalm 119:130 says, "The unfolding of Thy words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple." The average person who humbly reads the Bible can say, "I have more insight than all my teachers, for Thy testimonies are my meditation" (Psalm 119:99). Psalm 19:7 teaches, "The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple."

The idea of hidden codes in the Bible contradicts all of that by limiting accessibility to the real message of the Bible to so-called experts who can decipher the cryptic messages God "hid" in the Scriptures. But such "experts" aren't needed because the Bible contains no hidden codes.

One hidden-code theory works like a common word-search puzzle-hidden messages are supposedly embedded diagonally within the Hebrew text. But that's as foolish as turning your daily newspaper into a word-search puzzle and expecting to find meaningful stories hidden in it. Newspapers aren't written to convey messages in secret code, and neither was the Bible. Both should be read using ordinary rules of language.

Of course there are concepts in the Bible that are hard to understand-even the apostle Peter admitted that (2 Peter 3:15). But the way to discover the meaning of those hard passages is not by seeking out hidden messages, but by engaging in diligent study that accurately handles the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).

Take heart! The Bible is clear and even the most untrained reader can understand it. God wants you to understand the Bible, and He has provided the Holy Spirit as a guide (John 16:13). After all, "man does not live by bread alone, but...by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD" (Deuteronomy 8:3).

5 out of 5 stars Riveting from Begining to End.......2003-09-30

This is an excellent, easy read, and a must read for all. In fact, Jesus has talked about reincarnation in the scriptures that were suppressed in the 3rd century, cuz the church doesn't want you to know about it. Anyone who tells you differently hasn't done their homework. This book does an excellent job explaining this change of doctrine, and it is a fact that reincarnation was a part of the church's teachings, as I have read other books that verify this history of the church. This book emphasizes that these predictions are prospects and not written in stone which are subject to changes depending on the mass consciencness of humanity. You will not be disapointed if you purchase this book, I guarantee it!!!

    5 out of 5 stars I love this Book!.......2000-12-02

One of the best books ever written on Post war toys from Japan. Beautiful color photos of toys and their boxes, along with production dates and quantities, dimensions, description of actions, scarcity ratings and values. Patent drawings and illustrations are included for many toys. This book contains the most extensive listing of Japanese toy trademarks I have ever seen. I have been collecting Japanese tin toys for 35 years and this listing alone makes this book invaluable.

4 out of 5 stars Covers the Topic Well.......2006-03-15

This book is a very good guide to recycling old items and creating new uses for them. Environmentalists everywhere will certainly appreciate the reuse of older items. The book is illustrated very well and the photographs are nicely done.

5 out of 5 stars You can do it!.......2003-06-12

A lot of the home decor books that come out have beautiful plans, that are virtually impossible for the average person to accomplish. This is not the case with Salvage Style in Your Home. All of the projects they show are not only easy, but very pretty too!

The pictures and instructions are very user friendly, and easy to follow. And the items that they use are not hard to find. It's not like when you watch a home decorating show and you think," I love how that looks, but where do I find it!? " The book uses things like slate roof tiles and axe handles to create the most appealing things. I mean, when you see how they use and old shutter to make a cd rack you will be amazed!

Salvage Style for Your Home is every frugal home decorator's dream book! It's a book of inspiration and I highly suggest you give it a read!

5 out of 5 stars The perfect mix of beautiful photography & detailed info!.......2001-08-28

Salvage Style is the perfect book for anyone with a passion for recycling and a love of beautiful, creative things. It features gorgeous, decorator-style photos that provide plenty of inspiration, but it balances them with a wealth of information about the importance of reusing perfectly good materials and the process of doing so. All of the projects have detailed, step-by-step directions---complete with photos for the more visually minded folks out there---and most of them are easy to replicate. If you're looking to expand your mind and look at common materials in a new light, this book will fan the fires of your creativity in ways you never imagined!
