Book Description

The 44 stories of Dreams of a Robot Dancing Bee-long-awaited by fans of Tate's poetry-will come as a welcome surprise to readers unfamiliar with his previous work. Tate seems both awed and bemused by small town life, with its legends, flights of fancy, heightened emotions, tragedies and small ruptures in the fabric of ordinary existence.

    Book Description

Elegy for a Lost Star sets the stage for a major turning point in the Symphony of Ages series. The dragon Anwyn--who has lain for three years in deathlike sleep in a grave of rock and black coal is freed by the cataclysm that concluded Requiem for the Sun. Disoriented and confused, she remembers only two things: the person who trapped her in dragon form and locked her in a rocky grave--Rhapsody; and an all-encompassing desire to wreak vengeance.Meanwhile, Achmed, the Firbolg king, resumes rebuilding the his shattered home, while a guild of merciless assassins set about taking revenge on him for the killing of their leader.A horribly deformed but magical being finds its way through a carnival of freaks to the palace of an evil despot, who sees in it the potential to be the instrument by which his plans of conquest and brutal domination of a continent will be realized. With the rise of new leaders, good and evil, the long-awaited birth of the Child of Time, the dark plans of assassins and rulers, a confrontation that shakes the relationship of the Three, and a battle to the death between two dragons of unimaginable elemental power, the seeds of chaos are planted for a war that will, by its end, consume half of the world.

the whole book was people talking. Nothing really happend. I also dislike how Ashe is never there when everything goes wrong with Rhapsody. I also do not understand what the point of Anwyn was. She was like a page filler.

3 out of 5 stars Dirge for a Rushed Tale.......2006-06-18

Fair warning: I will discuss some events in reasonable detail. If you dislike reviews that provide relative descriptive about events that take place in a book, please kindly scroll down.

Elegy for a Lost Star is the fifth book in Elizabeth Haydon's "Symphony of the Ages" series, which began with a core trilogy (Prophecy, Rhapsody and Destiny), then added on Requiem for the Sun, Elegy and forthcoming Assassin King (due in 2007, and that can't get here soon enough!). If you haven't previously read the first books, I cannot stress the importance of doing so. Some series you can jump into at any central point and pick up the thread; this is definitely not one of those. While Ms. Haydon goes over the basic sketch of history that brings the reader to the present through the chronicles of the three main characters, Rhapsody, Achmed and Grunthor, you owe it to yourself to immerse in the world.

I finished Elegy for a Lost Star after reading Requiem for a Lost Sun and revisiting the core trilogy the day or two before. Therefore, all the events sparkled fresh in my mind as I transitioned from one book to the next. While I found the core trilogy engrossing and impossible to put down, the speed slowed slightly through Requiem as I appreciated the detail more than anything else. However, the vagaries of Rhapsody being trapped in a sea cave became a bit wearing. Elegy's slim size, especially compared to the 800-plus pages of its predecessors, worried me a bit.

My initial judgment on Elegy is that it is a condensed novel, and while keeping the high standard of Ms. Haydon's writing skills, it lacks a certain sparkle. The plot wandered at points, picking up different story threads and weaving them in for a time, then discarding them again. Case in point: the hodgepodge use of Anwyn, the oracle of the past and now wholly a dragon, and Llauron, Rhapsody's father-in-law and also a dragon whose transformation completed three years earlier. From the cover, an informed reader clearly discerns Anwyn and Llauron looming over Rhapsody and her baby, Meridion. It should come as no surprise the dragon finally enter the limelight of the story. Unfortunately, they don't enjoy centerstage quite so fully as they should.

Anwyn's awakening jerks into the machinations of Talquisst, the highly unsavory regent for the troubled, divided nation of Sorbold (incidentally Ylorc and Tyrian's uneasy neighbour). The transition comes roughly and left me rather in the lurch, trying to figure out what happened with Anwyn's current struggles to regain her memory and exact her revenge on Rhapsody. Usually Ms. Haydon executes these different shifts in the storyline with a deft touch, but Elegy's movements lacked that particular elegance.

Another concern that dropped my initial rating from four stars to three lies in her treatment of the dragons. While we get background information through Elynsynos about how wyrmkin interact with their parents, and the sacrifice of the eldest dragon to seal the vault of Living Earth that keep the F'dor imprisoned in the heart of the earth, we lack more important details... Notably, Llauron's involvement with protecting Rhapsody, newborn Meridion, and her friends against his rampaging, furious mother. It feels as though Llauron suddenly manifests (no pun intended) in the story at some point, flits out of existence, then shows up when it matters most again. This form of deus ex machina disappoints me because Llauron's uneasy relationship with Rhapsody, Ashe, Anborn, and Achmed certainly changed after becoming a dragon and the first Cymrian Council meeting. The story covers very little of this in Elegy, beyond exchanging annoyed words with Ashe and Achmed's wry, superb brand of blunt-spoken displeasure.

Instead, we wander along between Sorbold's decline spiced up with scenes with Constantin, the Patriarch (and a new appreciation for the Chain of Prayer), the ongoing despair of Faron after washing ashore and ending up with a carnival of monstrosities, a sort of fantasy horror show (bearded lady, duck-footed performers, and other misfits apply here!). Faron makes for an interesting enemy because you have to feel some sense of compassion for the offspring of a tortured ancient Seren and a F'dor host, a lost soul tormented from the very beginning. Against Anwyn, the foil provides an entertaining level of comparison but it doesn't reach its fullest flowering.

The scattered state of the story comes as a surprise given Elegy's overall short length. I'm not sure if it's just me, but I felt rushed in places and hopelessly without direction in others. Major milestones such as Meridion's birth came as an anticlimax and the distinct lack of Grunthor was a real shame. We at least see a good deal of Achmed, a truly excellent character in fantasy for the realism in his flawed person (versus Rhapsody's near divine perfection).

On the whole, this isn't up to the standard of Ms. Haydon's other books but I hope it will redeem itself by the segue into The Assassin King and a re-reading. The apparent shadow of doom and destruction layered over the continent by Anwyn's bloody campaign of vindiction and Talquisst's use of the deck of Sharra lacks the treatment it really deserved, but hopefully things will pan out well in the forthcoming sequel.

3 out of 5 stars Getting more back in the swing!.......2005-09-24

Just a comment to P. Pollak: Definetly, definetly read the first books. And then you'd know immediately to what that 'Elegy for a Lost Star' is referenced. You'll understand SO much more. And the first three books are much, much more enjoyable.

This book was better than it's predecessor in the series. Haydon seems to get a slightly better grip on her character's personalities. It's definetly a book that's just moving you along in action until the next volume is available. Still interesting and with some surprising twists and turns. The child is born (though a few lines in that section were REALLY drama-queeny and plain annoying for a RPGer like me) and, horror of horrors, Anwyn is back. And MAD.

Again, how I lament Faron, the maligned! *poses dramatically* I am eager to see what happens to the poor... uh.. fish-living-stone-man-thing.

3 out of 5 stars Elegy for a Lost Title.......2005-08-02

This was my first exposure to Elizabeth Haydon and she deserves between 3 and 4 stars for spinning a tale with a number of very creative elements. Character development is not bad, although I'd probably be more intrigued had I read any of the earlier volumes in the series, which brings me to my main complaints. Publishers and book sellers: If youre going to publish (carry) series novels, please carry them all so that people can start at the beginning. Second, I don't know who comes up with the titles for these books, but it can't be the author because the title rarely has any connection to the book.

1 out of 5 stars very very sad.......2005-08-01

Not the story itself, but the book. It has no heart, it has no intellect, it's just a bunch of pish posh. Belongs in the slush pile.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Season Now in Print!.......2006-07-02

Probably the best episodes of the 3 seasons are in this the second season e.g. "Amok Time", "Wolf In the Fold", "The Trouble With Tribbles", "Journey to Babel" and many more and yet we get here very well-written stories that although are not exactly the same as the episodes themselves, we get a greater understanding of what's happening because of the greater details. Watch the eps and then read this.

5 out of 5 stars James Blish's adaptations of Season 2 of "Star Trek".......2005-02-27

In the late 1960s James Blish began writing "The Star Trek Readers," a series of paperbacks in which he adapted the scripts of what was then the late lamented original "Star Trek" series. When first published Blish basically started with what fans voted as the most popular episodes and eventually worked his way through the show's three seasons. However, for the 25th Anniversary editions the adaptations were reorganized so that there were not only three volumes, each representing an entire season. Therefore, "Star Trek: The Classic Episodes, Volume 2" represents the second season in 1967-68.

The volume includes an introduction by D.C. Fontana, and the prefaces that Blish wrote for his original paperbacks, along with an essay on "The Transcendatal Vision" by David Gerrold, whose classic episode "The Trouble With Tribbles" is from the second season. The episodes are arranged in order of their television appearance: "Amok Time," "Who Mourns for Adonais?" "The Changeling," "Mirror, Mirror," "The Apple," "The Doomsday Machine," "Catspaw," "Metamorphosis," "Journey to Babel," "Friday's Child," "The Deadly Years," "Obsession," "Wolf in the Fold," "The Trouble With Tribbles," "The Gamesters of Triskelion," "A Piece of the Action," "The Immunity Syndrome," "A Private Little War," "Return to Tomorrow," "Patterns of Force," "By Any Other Name," "The Omega Glory," "The Ultimate Computer," "The Paradise Syndrome," "Bread and Circuses," and "Assignment: Earth."

Blish was a well-known science fiction author, who has won the Hugo Award for his novel "A Case of Conscience," and what he brought to these adaptations was a great ability to flesh out both the characters and the actions. In many ways these adaptations hold up better than the original episodes, where the special effects are considerably less than what an eight-year-old can do on a home computer today. But throughout Blish shows an understanding of both the characters and the Star Trek universe that was being created, which explains why he was also the author of the first "Star Trek" original novel, "Spock Must Die!"

I have fond memories of Blish's adaptations because in these primitive days before even videotape let alone DVDs, the only way to watch "Star Trek" was if the series was in syndicaton in your neck of the woods. Even then, you had to catch the episodes when they were on. I still have my four hardback volumes collecting all of "The Star Trek Reader" volumes, with Funky Winkerbean "Star Trek" inspired cartoons pasted on the inside of the covers. Adapting television episodes into short stories is certainly a lost art, but James Blish was one of its master practioners.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Findhorn Book of Meditation -- A must read for all meditators........2006-09-25

Having started a meditation practice about 20 years ago, I thought why do I need to read this book. But when I was checking out Darren Main's Web site, something inside of me thought that I should purchase this book. And I did.

I had tried various types of meditataion -- one group had me doing "Spiritual Exercises", I took a meditation class, and tried TM, but still had difficulty with the practice. It was something that I thought I should do, but never really enjoyed it. So I was skeptical when I started reading the book.

This book taught me everything that all of my prior experiences failed to give me. The book is broken down into two parts Part One -- Learning How to Meditate and Part two How Meditation Works.

In part one the reader is given the basics such as sitting postures, how to train the mind and the obstacles that one will likely encounter when meditating.

In part two the reader learns about the psychology and physiology of meditaiton -- what actually happens when you start the practice, and what to do when emotions come up during meditation.

I think the most valuable part of the book for me was how Darren weaves his own personal experiences into the book which made me realize that everyone is human, that there will be days when my meditation is great, and days when it is a struggle. But as he emphasized throughout the book, what is most important is that you continue the practice regardless.

I can honestly say that since reading the book, I feel much more centered in my practice.

Thank you Darren for that gift!

5 out of 5 stars Accessible Book on Meditation.......2006-04-29

This is a well written, simple and accessible book on meditation. The book serves as a great introduction (with helpful instruction) to beginning one's own meditation practice, as well as providing background on and the benefits of a meditation practice.

5 out of 5 stars Good Starting Point.......2004-11-13

This is a good "primer" for meditation, rather than a really intense guide. Still, I would recommend it for someone who is curious about meditation and wants a non-intimidating way to get started.

Darren does speak in very conversational language which makes this (and his other books) very easy to read and learn from.

My favorite book of his is "Yoga and The Path Of The Urban Mystic". Also written in a very conversational style, it is a pretty deep book which gets into the spiritual parts of yoga and how to try to "live your yoga" both on and off the mat (it is not a posture book but rather the "internal part of yoga").

His other book "Spiritual Journeys Along The Yellow Brick Road" is also quite excellent as well. He uses the "Wizard Of Oz" story as a metaphor for the spiritual journey, it's very well written and enjoyable to read as well as insightful.

As for this meditation book, if you are new to meditation it's probably a pretty good place to start. If you've been meditating for a while, you may not get any "technical" info, but he still has some interesting personal insights from his own life and those of his students which I found enjoyable.

I would also highly recommend Jack Kornfield's audio/Video "Meditation For Beginners" (from "Sounds True"), he covers all the basics of meditation and guides you thru the practice. I find this format is much easier to work with than learning from a book. Of course a book such as the one reviewed above can certainly answer many questions and give insights that are valuable.

5 out of 5 stars Findhorn Book of Meditation.......2004-08-21

Perhaps the best book on meditation I have ever read. It is written with honesty and humility. This book unlike many other books on meditation does not expect you to be perfect or criticize you for not making the grade. Instead it teaches how to overcome the pitfalls with humour, integrity and simple tips and lessons. A must for any meditator whether beginner or adept, highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Another Enjoyable Instructive Book by Darren Main.......2003-05-10

I've been a Darren Main fan since reading his second book, "Yoga and the Path of the Urban Mystic." I've now read all three of his books and eagerly look forward to his books on yoga and spirituality. Reading this book is like listening to an old friend. This book is both instructive and informative and takes a deceptively complex topic and logically lays out the way for someone to successfully meditate, by avoiding all the common pitfalls that he or she may encounter while meditating. I would have given this book a higher rating, but I felt that it only skimmed different forms of meditation (Jewish repetitive prayer, Buddhist chanting, "mind blanking" are three that come to mind) at best, rather than investigating them more deeply, and explaining why they work for different people. I also have mixed feelings about the author providing as much personal information as he does. On the one hand, by humanizing the material, it can help the reader relate to the subject matter, but on the other hand by being so autobiographical, it shifts the focus of the book, which detract from the subject matter. This is still a very good book, loaded with good information on how to establish a positive meditative practice, and as mentioned, very readable.

Toys are no longer just for kids—they are at the heart of a new pop culture movement. The new toy scene emerged in 1997 when designer Michael Lau exhibited G.I. Joes he'd customized into hip-hop street figures at a Hong Kong toy show. Artists from Hong Kong and Japan followed suit, creating their own limited edition vinyl figures. The vinyl toy movement soon went global, invading the US and Europe with a vengeance and spawning an intense, worldwide collector's culture.Toys documents the amazing variety and mesmerizing detail of these unique, highly collectible figures from the top artists in Hong Kong, Japan, the US, the UK, Canada, and Australia, including James Jarvis, Gary Baseman, Frank Kozik, Jim Woodring, Ugly Dolls, and Todd Schorr. With dazzling imagery and interviews with the artists, this detailed collection is the perfect source for inspiration and information for designers, graphic designers, and collectors alike.

Written by John Pryke, Building City Scenery for Your Model Railroad is the book that shows you how to get started in city scape modeling. Initial chapters introduce concepts of urban development; later chapters give specific instructions on how to model realistic city structures and scenes of size in any scale. It is ideal for intermediate modelers who want to enhance realism on their layouts. It includes instruction on kitbashing, working with forced perspective, modeling fine details and more.

            5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2007-08-09

Building a layout reflecting an urban area is not an easy thing to do either in terms of planning or in terms of construction. It's difficult to get much into the available space. With the tips given in this book, you would be amazed at what you can pull off.

The book talks about cities both as backdrops and as the focus of a rail module. In both cases, the author's experience serves the reader well as do the photos and diagrams. Tips are present on construction and detailing. This is a top shelf resource for anyone who like railroading.

5 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Modeling Information!.......2003-03-19

This book is a must for anyone modeling city scenes. John Pryke shows and tells how to model city scenery realistically. Great photos and suggestions.

4 out of 5 stars All about dimensions.......2000-03-15

Pryke nails creating convincing city scenery by incorporating dimensional modeling with this well-written book. He covers backdrops, flats, partial and fully modeled buildings in a way that makes complete sense thanks to some excellent writing, fine photography and diagrams. The graphics and photos are new looking, unlike those in some books that look like reprints of something produced in 1953. Also covered well are how to create realistic street scenes, building foundations, sidewalks and streets. You won't walk away from this one feeling like you've read it all before. You'll find this book unbeatable if you're a novice cityscape modeler like me or an accomplished modeler.

            3 out of 5 stars Background Information.......2006-08-21

At first starting this book, it seemed to be just about constructing a backdrop for a model railroad and that all other topics were omitted. That is not the case. It covers all the basics in broad generalities. That being said, the first portion of the book is about backdrops and it is good coverage on that subject. It gives general principles and some hints for easier construction. From there is covers other subjects and goes downhill.

The information contained in here is worthwhile but is so broad as to be just an overview. It gives useful background information but is light on specifics.

3 out of 5 stars Should be titled: Scenic Backdrops........2004-12-21

This book contains very few new ideas and little or no step-by-step instruction. Dave Frary's book How to Build Realistic Model Railroad Scenery is a much more useful book with myriad tips and examples.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the unexperienced........2004-05-27

A good book is you are looking to make a backdrop for your model railroad. If you are just looking to make realistic scenery (like hills, water, plants etc) it could be better. A full half of the book is dedicated to making backdrops, and each other topic only gets a chapter. I did like the chapter on blending scenery though. I wouldn't recommend this book for people who don't have scenery building experience.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best critical writing on Elvis Presley.......2007-05-29

This book sticks to the music, and what music it was, or should I say, what music *made* - sometimes from situational film material. But this work sticks mainly to A-list, non-soundtrack recordings.
Whether he stuck closely to the demo, or reference disc, or completely reworked the tune, he made it at least interesting and listenable, and those that didn't make that cut (like "Hey Jude") are given a fair chance.
Since '68, I still can't believe what he did with "You'll Never Walk Alone"; discovering years later it was he on piano working out a "head" arrangement on the spot, made it seem even greater. This book will remind you why you liked a particular track in the first place or why you should have. At age 17, I didn't appreciate the depth of this performance, which in this book is described with masterful strokes. Another revelation for me was in reading about "Crying In The Chapel". I've always enjoyed Elvis' record of it, but thought he could have put more *voice* on it. Roy and Aspell evaluated the number as a whole and brought out nuances which have caused me to realize that it, too, is A-list.
I would have been happy to find reviews of movie fluff entries like "Sand Castles" or "Shake That Tambourine", but let's hope we get an "alternate take edition" of this fine manuscript.

THIS NOVEL SHOULD GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS ONE OF THE GREATEST BOOKS TO EVER BE WRITTEN ABOUT THE KING OF ROCK -N- ROLL . IT'S REALLY GOOD . IT TELL'S THE STORY BEHIND 112 OF THE KINGS GREATEST AND NOT SO GREATEST SONGS .IT FOCUSES ON WHAT REALLY IS GREAT ABOUT ELVIS' LIFE HIS MUSIC !

4 out of 5 stars A FITTING TRIBUTE TO THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING.......2003-02-23

There have been 4,567 books written about Elvis, mostly by people who have never known him, but whose third cousin's sixth-removed niece might have once dated Elvis' former schoolteacher's third wife. Then there's "The Essential Elvis." What makes this book so different is that Samuel Roy and Tom Aspell trace Elvis' life and legacy through personal history as well as 112 of his most significant songs. The book doesn't proclaim to be an expose or definitive history (it's neither); what it is is a clear portrait of the Man Who Would Be King, told through behind-the-scenes knowledge that uncovers and pieces
together the story of a man, his times, talent and cultural influences. And the 20 photographs -- many of which have never been published --- add a nice touch.

5 out of 5 stars A tribute to the King!.......2000-09-09

This excellent book is about what was most important to Elvis and his fans: his songs and music. One of the most significant things the authors said about Elvis is the following words: «The first and best thing that can be done for Elvis Presley is to lessen the emphasis that has been placed on his later years and focus on the talent and genius that define the King.....one of the reasons for his demise was because he cared and felt too much...it got to the point that being Elvis Presley was one of the hardest jobs in the world». I agree completely with the authors and, as a fan, my only wish is that this book will make the people, who don't respect Elvis, see the light...

                        5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading.......1999-09-25

"The Essential Elvis" is a thoughtful exploration of Presley's music from 1954 until his death in 1977. It's an important and much-needed work that concentrates solely on Presley's artistry. Authors Samuel Roy and Tom Aspell break free from the ill-informed mythology of most Elvis publications by re-examining Presley's work in provocative, exciting ways. You may not agree with all of the writers' criticisms, but it encourages you to track down the 112 Elvis recordings listed in their book.
