Book Description

In T. Davis Bunn's "clever mix of politics, morality, and high-tech suspense" (Publishers Weekly), an ordinary man is asked to take on an extraordinary job: step in for a Congressman and defeat a bill. But the more he learns about the task, the more he suspects he's being set up. And the harder he fights his opponents, the deadlier the game.

3 out of 5 stars Decent White Collar Thriller.......2005-07-22

This book gets off to a slow start, taking a bit too long to let us in on what's going on, but once it gets going, it's not bad.

Wynn Bryant is a man of means who obviously travels in better circles than I do, since at a mere suggestion from his sister, he becomes an interim Congressman. He wanders around DC without a clue until he gets dragged on a journey to Rome and Cairo, and gets pulled into some hefty intrigue.

Jackie Burke is a windsurfer with a crappy job who suddenly gets hired by the wife of the ill Congressman whose place Wynn takes. Jackie realizes something big is afoot when the investigation she has been hired to undertake gets her apartment broken into and trashed. She meets Wynn and feels an instant attraction and kinship when they go to Rome, though most of their relationship throughout the rest of the book happens over the telephone.

Behind all the aforementioned intrigue is financier Pavel Hayek, a billionaire maverick who moved his foreign exchange trading business to Florida from Wall Street. As the author took so much time carefully constructing the plot, it seems unfair to give it away here. Suffice it to say, Hayek is a very bad man with some very big, very bad plans, and it's up to Wynn and Jackie to figure out what they are and stop him.

Once things got moving, it was a fairly compelling read. It was hard to get a fix on Wynn's character, aside from the fact that he had a painful past and a lot of money to blow. The other characters, save one or two, didn't go very deep, either. Jackie was likeable, though. Things wrapped up a little too neatly with a pretty bow on top, and the author relied too heavily on leaving everyone out of the loop-the protagonists and the reader-but getting there managed to keep my interest. All in all, not a bad financial/political thriller.

4 out of 5 stars Hedge Funds, Anybody?.......2005-03-18

The protagonist is Wynn Bryant, past owner of a high-tech business, who has no one in the world except his sister who is married to Senator Grant Wells.

Senator Graham Hutchings had been pushing for a bill dubbed the Jubiliee bill. It was aimed at curbing and controlling the big time hedge fund operators who played with economies like one plays with dominoes. Then Hutchings has a stroke leaving his seat empty. Elections are in the offing. Grant Wells is Hutchings' political opponent and is totally against the Jubilee bill. Seizing the opportunity, Grant pushes Wynn to run in the elections. At his sister's recommendation, Wynn reluctantly accepts and soon becomes a cog in the wheel of Washington DC.

But Wynn doesn't turn out to be the puppet that Grant expects him to be. Before opposing the Jubilee bill as per his brother in law's instructions, he starts digging into its details and backgrounds. This leads him from Washington to Cairo and back, with many revelations on the way. In his diggings, he comes across Jackie, a private detective who has been hired by the wife of Graham Hutchings to hedge fund scams. Both of them are lonely for company and a mutual attraction develops between the two. Together, they cross the path of Pavel Hayek, the biggest of the big hedge fund operators - a ruthless man who would let nothing stand in his way.

The novel is a page turner, zipping its way from start to finish at breathtaking pace. It is full of interesting characters and situations. I wish T. Davis Bunn had spent a little more time (even at the expense of slowing down the narrative) to educate readers like me (who are ignorant of commerce, economics, the workings of the wall street, etc.) a bit more about hedge funds. Not knowing the significance of the one of the key elements of the story reduces suspension of disbelief. Other than that, as said above, it is a great read. Recommended.[...]

3 out of 5 stars Umm.. What was that again?.......2004-11-13

I actually got lost in this book. I don't understand hedge funds and banking that well, so reading this book took a lot out of me. I was thinking so hard trying to understand what it all meant, how it all tied into the plot, that I missed out on the rest of the story. I finished this book feeling incomplete. I wasn't sure if I figured out who the real bad guy was, who the spies were, etc. I also got lost in trying to figure out how Jackie investigating Hayek and the banking stuff tied in with the congressman and his wife and this so called smear campaign. Overall, I rate this book with 3 stars. I liked the descriptions, but I couldn't fully grasp this story. If you understand hedge funds, politics, and banking then you could probably read it and enjoy it. But this book was not my favorite!

2 out of 5 stars Inaccuracies Plague Story.......2004-06-20

Mr Bunn's biography on the end flap says "raised in North Carolina, taught in Switzerland, worked in Africa and the Middle East, and served as direct in Germany, currently lives in England." I can only wonder if he has ever spent much, if any, time at all in Florida. Having lived in Orlando for the past twenty-one years, I find it extremely annoying to read a novel about my city that is so full of inaccuracies. His geography is all mixed up, his roads are confused, and even the weather is incorrectly represented. In the twenty-one years I've been here, it never once hit 100 degrees, and certainly no where near that in April, for heaven's sake! Maybe this wouldn't bother someone who doesn't live here, but there's an old, but correct, saying: "Write about what you know." Mr Bunn simply does not know Orlando. It ruined the story for me.

4 out of 5 stars Wonder Woman/Land Of The Dead.......2006-12-15

Wonder Woman as Daredevil? Blind super-hero with other senses amazingly heightened...that's been done, hasn't it?
I would have been remiss if--in my focus on the women of comics lately--I hadn't checked in with Wonder Woman, a character who I must confess, in all my years wasted reading comics (there will be many more, thank you very much), I had completely ignored. But the images on the startling cover of Land Of The Dead (ie. a blindfolded heroine with, well okay, I don't like the man-hands and neither would Seinfeld, but, uh, other than that she's absolutely gorgeous), told me this was where to start, when it comes to the world-famous Amazonian.
Having said that, it was a bit tricky jumping into what is clearly part of a larger epic. I showed up too late for Zeus's de-throning, Medousa's clobbering and Themyscira (WW's homeland) doing a rather large swan-dive into the sea (sorry I missed it, must have been a sight). But Land Of The Dead does feature a somewhat vulnerable Wonder Woman--blindfolded and all (not to mention blinded)--being punched around the globe by the psychotic Zoom, while his partner, Cheetah, engages in the usual rending, tearing, and throat-raking--Flashy being the victim this time. The evil duo's agenda is a bit broad, involving an attack on a previous Cheetah, teaching Flash a lesson (but abandoning that plan and settling for teaching WW a lesson and just killing Flash), souping up Cheetah's powers, punching out a few other Themyscirans when the opportunity arises, and rendezvousing with a fella called Doctor Psycho, who's got whole other agendas! Rather hodge-podgy--and the art is a tad flat.
But then Flashy is written out, Wonder Girl (I like her!) and Ferdinand (bull guy) are written in, as Wonder Woman answers the call of Pallas Athena and agrees to rescue Hermes from the, uh, Land Of The Dead. Time gets dilated, creepy underworld denizens slither out of the darkness, and there's a bit of a problem with Hades, Zeus, Ares, and Poseidon, who are all a bit upset with Athena, and therefore our wonderful warrior. Before it all gets sorted out, there is some carnage, and backstabbing, deity-style. The battles and the backgrounds are livened up by superior artwork--Ares looking particularly impressive, and Wonder Girl looking--well, I like her! The resolution cleans up some loose ends from this tale as well as previous stories, and that will teach Hades to be so arrogant.
All in all, a blindfolded Wonder Woman is still a splendid Wonder Woman, showing her best on a grim trek to try and solve many dilemmas plaguing her and her friends. Very entertaining reading.

4 out of 5 stars When is a wish or a desire the reason for risking your life for?.......2006-11-04

I found this to be an intriguing story of why someone would risk their life to fullfil a hidden wish or desire to be something other than you already are. Wonder Woman, Wonder Girl and Ferdinand work together to rescue Hermes from the Underworld. The art and story were excellant and the ending is not what you expect but the true lessons learned are be careful what and how you ask for something; the end result may not be what you may request.

                    2 out of 5 stars 2.5 stars--Never captured my interest.......2007-07-31

The Earth in Hyperthought has been mostly destroyed with people living underground or in domes. The north is controlled by powerful corporations while the south is free. In the south Jolie Sauvage runs a business acting as a tour guide for rich northerners. She meets Jin, a handsome movie star and son of one of the corporation CEO's. She falls for Jin, but he leaves for California to have experimental surgery on his brain. Nanobots are inserted into his brain to help expand his thought processes so he can understand the universe. Jolie comes to believe he is in trouble and mounts an impossible rescue.

The plot sounded exciting, but unfortunately for me it wasn't, mostly because the eponymous 'hyperthought' is barely touched upon. It's more of an adventure novel detailing Jolie's activities as a tour guide, revolutionary and finally, rescuer. The characters are not given much depth and that includes Jolie. This book is under 200 pages but I had to force myself through it. It's certainly not badly written, it just never caught my interest and in the end, the science fiction content was too light.

4 out of 5 stars Original, but not my favorite sci-fi.......2006-07-18

My Spanish teacher is always talking about a person only using less than 5, 10% of their brain, and what a deep secret the other 90% has. This book is basically exploring that concept, through an adventure, of using most of your mind- or in other words, hyperthought.

I'm not going to say that I didn't enjoy this book, because I really did. It also left me thinking. The twists and the ideas are very shocking, and it's hard to believe what your brain is - or may be- capable of.

This book did have some very minor flaws, but all in all, I liked the book.

                    3 out of 5 stars Light Reading.......2004-09-17

                    Actually 3.5 Stars.

Based on the reviews, I imagined I would really enjoy the experience of reading it. And I did *but* upon completion, I felt somewhat disappointed. I didn't feel as if anything had actually happened. I certainly enjoyed the novelist style of writing and the novel flowed well enough, but I never felt any of the characters beyond the heroine were more than 2-dimensional props to assist or hinder her progress.

Perhaps most disappointing were the shallow descriptions of the titular "Hyperthought". Indeed, it seemed almost an Afterthought, a plot device to get the heroine to jump thru the appointed hoops.

Not bad, but don't expect a "meaty" thought-provoking read.

5 out of 5 stars I've added this one to my growing collection of sci-fi!.......2004-05-04

The more sci-fi "ages", the more new authors with great books appear to tantalize and terrorize us with possible futures. In this case, it's a little of both in the 22nd Century where Earth is toxic and masses of people have gone underground while those who are corporation-level Coms live in the Northern Hemisphere near the pole. Fantastic reading. Just as are many other sci-fi books as "Ilium", "Broken Angels", "Spin State", "Newton's Wake", "Stranger in a Strange Land", "Neuromancer", "Snow Crash", "Cyber Hunter" and so forth. Read them all!

                    5 out of 5 stars Cyber Excitement.......2004-04-21

I don't usually read much sci-fi, but a friend recommended Hyperthought. I enjoyed the trip. The author did a good job drawing me into the futuristic thriller. I loved the main character and the settings were cinematic. Very cool and would recommend.

Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize when it was first published in 1975, Haggadah & History is much more than a history of the Passover story. It is also a mirror of the last five centuries in Jewish history as reflected in the haggadah itself.

In an updated preface to the book, Yerushalmi recounts the story of the discovery of the Sarajevo Haggadah, which he says is "arguably the most renowned illuminated haggadah manuscript from the Middle Ages to have survived."

Two hundred facsimile plates reproduce representative pages from rare printed haggadot in two of the world's outstanding Judaica collections: the libraries of Harvard University and The Jewish Theological Seminary. This visual history is complemented by Professor Yerushalmi's fascinating historical introduction and richly detailed place descriptions. The result is a rare blend of scholarship and art.

5 out of 5 stars Haggadah And History: A Wonderful Resource.......2000-04-09

Haggadah and History is a wonderful resource because it allows us to view segments of haggadahs printed throughout the past 400+ years, and gives us insights into the historical/cultural influences present in those haggadahs.

You can use Haggadah and History at your seder for giving tangible examples of our people's observance of the Passover seder throughout history. By bringing something new to the seder, you renew and expand your family's connection to the Seder ritual.

                      Book Description

Molly O'Neill's father believed that baseball was his family's destiny. He wanted to spawn enough sons for an infield, so he married the tallest woman in Columbus, Ohio. Molly came out first, but eventually her father's plan prevailed. Five boys followed in rapid succession and the youngest, Paul O'Neill, did, in fact, grow up to be the star right fielder for the New York Yankees. In Mostly True, celebrated food critic and writer O'Neill tells the story of her quintessentially American family and the places where they come together -- around the table and on the ball field.

Molly's great-grandfather played on one of the earliest traveling teams in organized baseball, her grandfather played barnstorming ball, and her father pitched in the minor leagues, but after being sidelined with an injury in the war, he set his sights on the next generation. While her brothers raged and struggled to become their own men, Molly, appointed "Deputy Mom" at an age when most girls were playing with dolls, learned early how to be the model Midwestern homemaker and began casting about wildly for other possible destinies. As her mother cleaned fanatically and produced elaborate, healthy meals, Molly spoiled her bro-thers with skyscraper cakes, scribbled reams of poetry, and staged theatrical productions in the backyard. By the late 1960s, the Woodstock Nation had challenged some of the O'Neill values, but nothing altered their conviction that only remarkable achievement could save them.

Mostly True is the uncommon chronicle of a regular family pursuing the American dream and of one girl's quest to find her place in a world built for boys. Molly O'Neill -- an independent, extraordinarily talented, and fiercely funny woman -- showed that home runs can be hit in many fields. Her memoir is glorious.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-17

For anyone who grew up around Columbus, OH in the 60s and 70s, this is a must. But, incredibly, O'Neill makes the book fascinating as well for her look at NY and its restaurant scene in the 80s and 90s. And the glue to the whole narrative is her and her family, including her famous little brother, Paul. Well done Molly.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant Romp Thru A Foodies Life.......2007-02-07

Molly O'Neill has a very engaging writing style that pulls you into her world. It's a world peopled with the wildly obsessed, but go along as the ride is enjoyable. Molly O'Neill writes about a life that straddled midwest big city longings with utopian politics and food plays a big role at all stops. My only quibble is that the book has less to do about being Paul O'Neill's sister than the book jacket may lead you to believe.

5 out of 5 stars True or Not,, It's an Enjoyable Book........2006-11-10

After reading this book I ordered several copies as gifts. That probably says it all, but I can't just leave it there. Molly O'Neill and her family grew up in the neighborhood where I live and I was taken by her memories of family life where she was the only girl with five male siblings and a father whose main focus was baseball. The exploits of the boys had me laughing out loud while also being thankful I didn't live next door to them.
I enjoyed reading how Molly's cooking expertise evolved and even included her brothers in this endeavor. Her writing, as always, was a delight.

                      5 out of 5 stars Mostly Wonderful.......2006-10-12

I've been reading Molly O'Neill's book. Being a Central Ohio native I'm familiar with many of the places and situations she describes from her childhood. I'm enjoying the memories and the quality of her writing.
I do want to make one remark about part of her book. Molly writes in several places about her family's ventures into playing baseball in Plain City, Ohio. I was raised in Plain City in the same time period as Molly's childhood and while she does describe the ball field very accurately, she tends to refer to the city as being an Amish community. Plain City, in the 60's, was a home to a lot of Amish farmers, but they were not the majority of the residents. In most ways, it was and indeed, still is, a typical Midwestern small town. We just happened to have buggies on the street occasionally. We do have 2 Amish restaurants, but the Amish themselves moved away long ago because of the proximity to the growth of Columbus.
Anyway, aside from that small point, the memoir is wonderful and I would recommend it not only to those people raised in Central Ohio in the 60's & 70's, but anyone who wants to understand Midwestern people, especially families.

5 out of 5 stars A Really Nice, Warm Book that's Fun to Read........2006-08-26

There seems to be a fashion in biographies to find people who had horrible lives: dysfunctional families, wicked stepmothers, financially destitute, etc., etc.

It's nice to read one that's not that way. A family that got along well then and still gets along. Why then bother to read it if nothing happens? Because it's written so well, there is humor, a great deal of humor -- there are stories of false teeth that look like fangs, wearing her first short skirt with four brothers teasing her about her kneecaps, and of course when she was pregnant....

And would you believe, just because it's in the title, there's a lot of baseball. Her father had played in the minor leagues. Her younger brother Pat played for the Yankees. So it's a story of baseball.

She was a writer for the New York Times and others, so she clearly knows how to write. That's what keeps the book so interesting.

                      Highly recommended.

                            Master Pattern Included

KWIK?SEW?s Sweatshirts Unlimited is a fun book. Everyone who sews would like the fun of creating a one-of-a-kind garment. Let your imagination run wild by the use of various inserts, colours, and fabrics on the same garment, this concept was unthinkable just a few years ago. Actually never has fashion been so much fun as right now.

The Master Pattern included in this book is for a sweatshirt in eight different sizes. Many people associate sweatshirts with a garment that should be worn when jogging and exercising, but this is no longer true. Sweatshirts have become a fashion garment, they can be for casual wear, sports and even dress-up occasions.

The sweatshirt is a loose fitting garment so you don't have to worry too much about the fit, which makes it a perfect gift for men, women and children. How about surprising a teenager with a sweatshirt using the school colours?

The book includes unlimited variations for necklines, hems, sleeve finishes, design changes, decorative finishes and much more. With the help of this book, you can design a sweatshirt for any occasion from sporty to a dressier look.

The master pattern includes eight unisex sizes from a children's size 10 to extra-large adult. This means you can use the master pattern for the entire family.

The multi-sized master pattern is printed on durable white paper with colour coded lines for each size. The patterns are printed on both sides of the paper so we could include as many sizes and designs as possible. If you trace the patterns using tracing paper or tracing cloth made of transparent pressed fibers you can use the master pattern again and again and the bright white paper makes it easy to trace the master pattern!

All of the master pattern pieces include 1/4? (6 mm) seam allowances. This is the best seam allowance to use when sewing sweatshirts. You can use a regular sewing machine or a serger/overlock machine.

Patterns are made to fit specific body measurements with ease allowed for comfort and style. Before you trace the pattern, choose the size by comparing the bust or chest measurement to the measurement chart. Choose the size closest to this measurement. If in-between sizes, choose the larger size.

My first real interest in adult literacy came when I happened to rent a room from one of the authors of this book (Caroline Beverstock) as she was completing her doctoral work at Indiana University. She introduced me to the other author of this book, Anabel Newman, with whom I have continued to have a strong working relationship.

I saw this book in many stages of revision and near-completion, and it was indeed interesting to watch the book take shape as new ideas, research and insights would be brought to light.

                                        From the introduction:

'America changed its mind for the better about adult literacy during the 1980s. We have been brought by the adult literacy movement from a slight (but growing) awareness of the problem of illiteracy in the previous generation to national recognition of the literacy needs of adults. Now we are ready as a nation to affirm full literacy as a value we cannot do without.'

The sentiments expressed in this paragraph are certainly true; unfortunately, there is still a long way to go toward achieving the goal of full literacy. Despite increased funding (in some states) of education, most of this funding has now shifted away from the needs of basic literacy to providing something with more of an evident bottom-line potential. Thus, a large number of adults with need are overlooked by state and federal agencies and funding because they do not fit the neat categories of providing economic improvement based on their training.

This book, published in 1990, a year designated by the United Nations as International Literacy Year, addresses the issue of adult literacy from an academic-research oriented perspective, yet the authors have had extensive hands-on experience in teaching and training, as well as producing materials and curricula to work with those in need.

This book addresses the values - economic, sociological, political, etc. - of adult literacy, and how these issues have shifted. Looking also at the ways in which literacy is measured and dealt with by different organisations, the authors give a broad survey of the field, finally concentrating on the activities of the National Coalition for Literacy and various other literacy initiatives.

The final chapter addresses the challenges of adult literacy. Building upon the work of such as Margaret Heckler, Ruth Holloway and Jonathan Kozol, the authors present the argument that the challenge of adult literacy can be addressed by ongoing efforts of communication and collaboration between education institutions, government programmes, and business. Community-based approaches, heightened awareness of the issue, further research, more involvement of citizens helping each other are all things that can assist the overall effort toward ending adult illiteracy.

This book is well worth the reading by any educator, librarian, volunteer who wants to work with new and improving readers, researcher, or policy maker in the area of education.

                                            Book Description

Anabel Thomas challenges the accepted assumptions about art works in religious establishments populated by women. They claim that these works did not have gender-specific qualities; and that religious women played no role in commissioning such imagery or in influencing its design and purpose. Through case studies, she establishes that in fact artistic imagery did figure prominently in conventual communities and she also identifies its various institutional roles. Based on archival findings that are published here for the first time, Thomas' groundbreaking study contributes to a growing literature that reexamines the role and influence of gender on religious imagery in the early modern period.

Once upon a time Mexican artisans made clothing and decorations with bird feathers. Their work was respected by many political rulers for whom they created lavish ceremonial outfits. This book recreates the fascinating culture of the Amantecah, pre-Columbian artisans dedicated to the trade of making clothingand jewelry out of native bird feathers, a profession full of cultural significance and respect for life.

                                                        Book Description

This unique and fully illustrated study of the painter's practice in Renaissance Tuscany focuses on paintings not only as art but also as products of a process of manufacture. Anabel Thomas presents a complete picture of the commissioning, production and marketing of paintings, examining such aspects as the way in which the painter and his business functioned from day to day, how the subjects and their style were decided, the constraints on cost and design, and the division of labor within and among the workshops.
